Product Description:

This premier textbook gives students--with or without a background in the sciences--the foundation in microbiology they need to perform their duties as health care professionals. In an engaging style, the text covers all the core concepts outlined for an introductory course by the American Society of Microbiology. This edition has a new full-color art program and provides up-to-date coverage of microbe-associated medical problems, including "bird flu," SARS, West Nile virus, "mad cow disease," anthrax, and smallpox. A bound-in CD-ROM includes case studies, self-assessment exercises, terminology lists, plus "Insight" and "Microbiology--Hollywood Style" sections that provide clinical insights and fun facts. "Doody's Core Titles™ 2009."

Customers' Reviews:
4 out of 5 stars.  Excellent book, February 16, 2010
The text in this book is fantastic, very clear and concise - easy for a student (like me) to read on their own and get a very clear understanding of. The book covers everything from the discovery of microorganisms to viruses, bacteria, protazoa, prions and the chemistry in cellular metabolism.
Chapter listing:
Microbiology - The Science
Microscopy
Cell Structure and Taxonomy
Diversity of Microorganisms Part 1
Diversity of Microorganisms Part 2
Biochemistry
Microbial Physiology and Genetics
Controlling Microbial Growth in Vitro
Using Antimicrobial Agents to Control Microbial Groth in Vivo
Microbial Ecology
Epidemiology and Public Health
Healthcare Epidemiology: Nosocomial Infections and Infection Control
Diagnosing Infectious Diseases
Pathogens of Infectious Diseases
Nonspecific Host Defense Mechanisms
Specific Host Defense Mechanisms: An Introduction to Immunology
Major Viral, Bacterial, and Fungal Diseases of Humans
Major Parasitic Diseases of Humans: An Introduction to Medical Parasitology

So you can see, this book covers a variety of topics - and is a fantastic introduction to the field of microbiology. The negatives of using this book - if you are a visual learner the diagrams are sub-par at best. Now I'm not talking about the tables, the tables are fantastic. The diagrams are minimal, and not very helpful. I am lucky in that my Micro professor has overheads of the diagrams from a different book that he uses.

5 out of 5 stars.  Interesting text on microbiology, fun to learn., December 11, 2004
I utilized this text for my microbiology class in undergrad. It lists the major parasites, molds and bacteria. Parasites were the most interesting because it shows you what foods are associated with what parasite. Pretty gross stuff but was not boring at all. I also used:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Question and Answers, isbn 0971999635, to help me with test preparation. The questions were quite similar to what I found on my college microbiology tests. Both books helped me to achieve very good scores on my tests.
