Product Description:

It is not unusual for someone to be afraid of going to the dentist! In this fun book for young audiences, both the crocodile and the dentist are feeling anxious about seeing each other. The crocodile is nervous about letting the dentist check out his toothy mouth; the dentist is understandably uneasy about seeing his scary patient!

Ingeniously written, Taro Gomi addresses common fears with funny and repetitive text. The crocodile and the dentist put on a brave front. Children will delight in seeing their fears and thoughts in print as they witness the crocodile and dentist's interactions. But no one gets hurt and the visit turns out to be a great success — better than expected by both characters. When the dentist finally finishes repairing the crocodile's last tooth, it is agreed that the reptile will return for another visit next year. A great ending to an educational and entertaining story that stresses the importance of caring for your teeth, no matter how many you have!

Taro Gomi's illustrations are bright and bold, conveying both the crocodile's and the dentist's bravery and eventual civility in a clever, humorous way. An American Bookseller Association's "Pick of the Lists," this is a fun read for children in preschool or the primary grades.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Not one of Taro Gomi's best, January 26, 2016
By Haejin
We love Taro Gomi's books. They're simple and sweet stories with cute illustrations. His book Spring is Here is one of my daughter's favorites.

This book, the Crocodile and the Dentist, is also cute but not as much as other books by Gomi. The story is about a crocodile that goes to see the dentist. The crocodile is scared and nervous about the visit. The dentist is scared too, of the crocodile. So, the entire book is basically the crocodile and dentist saying the same things. For example, the crocodile says "I'm scared of this visit" and the dentist says "I'm scared of this visit." The purpose is to teach kids that being afraid at the dentist is normal. However, I don't think it really gets that message across as clearly as it could. There's also a part where the crocodile bites the dentist out of fear/pain, which isn't really the best message for a small child anxious about a dentist visit.

I'm still a Taro Gomi fan, but this book isn't one of our favorites. We'll probably give this one away or donate it to a library.

To whoever thinks this book is the reason for scaring your children sorry to tell you but your child was probably scared in the first place I have loved this book since I was a child and it has had no reflection upon what I thought about the dentist and that goes for my children as well !

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Sends the wrong message about going to dentist. Potential to create worry and anxiety in children., March 04, 2013
By Susan (Brentwood, CA USA)
This is not a good book for children who haven't been to the dentist yet or those who like going to the dentist. Most kids nowadays have a postive experience at the dentist. Dental offices are child friendly. Pediatric dentists make the experience fun. Kids don't dread going, even for a filling. They get to pick the flavor they want to smell from the fun mask and they get nitris oxide, most aren't scared and don't experience pain. This book portrays fear and apprehension, page after page. This isn't how I want my child to think of a trip to the dentist. He has only had positive experience so far and after reading it once started to have concern about his next trip to the dentist. We haven't read it since and I have done a lot of positive talk about the dentist.
