When the word hypnotism comes to mind, we usually think of clichés such as a magician making an unwitting audience member squawk like a chicken; or, possibly, we think of it in terms of an alternative treatment for smoking cessation or weight management—areas where a will power boost is needed. It’s likely we don’t realize that it is a recognized healing tradition dating back to the ancient Greeks. Hypnotism (aka mesmerism) has experienced resurgences of popularity, most notably during war times when anesthesia was unavailable and patients were dying on the table. In these cases its dramatic effects could be seen in the painless removal of tumors and amputations.
In The Hypnosis Treatment Option, Scott D. Lewis makes the case for this therapy option to treat a wide array of conditions ranging from asthma, IBS, and childbirth to the expected headaches and anxiety. He offers concrete advice on how to choose the best practitioner, outlines what to expect from a session, and busts common myths (hypnotism isn’t scientific, the patient has no control, it’s dangerous, it’s nothing other than going to sleep).

This book was very helpful as an overview of hypnosis and its uses for a variety of health concerns. I am using Dr. Lewis's guided self hypnosis tapes and have found them quite helpful for stress reduction.

A Review of Hypnotherapy as a Treatment Option, June 03, 2013

This book is a great way to introduce people to the process and the benefits of hypnosis as a supplemental treatment. The first section gives you an overview of the history and development of hypnotherapy, whereas the second section covers the research into its efficacy as a treatment. The third section then covers its practical application. I like that the author spells out clearly what you can fairly expect from this form of treatment. There are some links to downloads at the back that are useful also. It's a heavy read for a lay person, but worth it if you are interested in hypnotherapy as a treatment.
