Great camera. Posted a few pictures to show what they look like after a few minutes using Lightroom. Where this camera excels is taking low light pictures. Even with a high ISO you get some grain, but not so much you can't clean it up later. Highly recommend re-setting some of the buttons so you can more quickly make changes to the aperture setting. Had the best luck so far using a telephoto (zoom) lens.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  YES., June 06, 2015

I'm admittedly an old school pro photographer. I cut my teeth on Japanese film cameras of all makes and models from the 60's-70's and had fun in my basement darkroom...so moving to digital has been a process over the years.

This little beauty enabled me to move into the new age with SPECTACULAR results. I have two of these actually and an assortment of lenses to get what I have to get. I'm not selling my stuff, but if you want to see what it can do, here are some samples.

See a few shots of my portfolio here : http://dianawestberg.zenfolio.com/

I'm into light, shine, and revealing the inner spirit of of humble things and Nikon has never let me down for achieving my vision. Photography isn't about the camera at all, it's about the eye and heart of the photographer. You can take awesome shots with a camera from a gumball machine! LOL!

However you shoot, use what gets you what you want, what you truly see. The D5100 gets me exactly what I love to shoot and share, so I'm ecstatic. Wholeheartedly recommend.

Enjoy and happy shooting! Have an awesome week!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Amazing Camera With Outstanding Performance!!, February 25, 2015
By Samuel D
First off, I want to say that before I owned this camera, i had experience taking photos for around 3-4 years. I went directly from a Sony Cyber-shot to this camera. I'm not going to write a big list of pro's and con's, but i want to talk a little about this camera and maybe give some tips. For the year I've had to enjoy this camera, I can honestly say that this is one of the best entry-level DSLR's on the market. The Nikon D5100 has amazing quality, but be sure to own a tripod and flash if you plan on using it in low light a lot. The 18-55mm kit lens it comes with is great, but by no means is cut out for low light. My recommendation to you is, purchase the lens with this camera. It's not the best lens and the focus is very slow, but at the end of the day it gets the job done. This lens is great for portraits, landscape photos, and fairly close up shots. I have had pretty good luck getting close up shots, but if you want to get macro shots, find another lens. It can only get about 6-8 inches close to something before the picture gets burly. But like I said, I've have had some luck with this. It just depends on what the photo is of and how much light you have. Going back to the camera, it has great specs and would even work for wedding shots. You control the camera, it will do what you tell it. It has 1080p video quality and also works great for video. Some people prefer a good DSLR over a video camera any day. Be sure that if you plan on using this for video allot, your buy and mic for it. This camera does not have good sound quality at all. Just a tip for shooting on manual mode; use the built in light meter that is in your view finder. Until i found out about what a light meter does, I've always had trouble getting good photos on manual. Basically it tells you what level to adjust your shutter speed at, so that the photo is not too under or over exposed (to bright or dark). Read your manual to find out about this. Nobody wants to do it, but it's important you read the manual provided so that you know how to use this camera. If this is a present for someone I would try to get it on Black Friday. They had a huge deal and i got this for $460 including tax. The tax added $30 to the price, so i still got a good deal. If this camera is for a new photographer and a little to pricey, consider the Nikon D3200.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Amazing Camera, December 06, 2014
By Keval Parmar
It is truly a magnificent camera for beginners. If you're looking to create stunning art without spending thousands of dollars get this camera! Also photoshop cc is a very helpful tool to use with your photography. Having these two things you can make amazing art and not spend as much money. If you would like to see more photographs by me and my dear friend NikonD5100 check it out on flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/126555260@N08/

1.0 out of 5 stars.  I'm writing this review about 4 years after my purchase ..., November 14, 2014
By Vanessa Donley
I'm writing this review about 4 years after my purchase. To be honest, I have a long history in photography, albeit more with film, butI'm a lazy photographer, and rarely use my DSLR. My compact gets used 90% of the time.

So after a trip abroad, I packed away my camera, and only pulled it out 9 months later. It was working terrifically. when I took it out of the closet to use... the shutter was stuck closed. If you google "d5100 shutter stuck" this seems to be a very common complaint.
I never dropped it, or had any problems until now.

I'm facing a $100-200 repair from Nikon for a problem that is a well known product defect. They won't send parts out to camera repair shops any more, so I HAVE to send it to one of their service centers. I wouldn't reccommend this camera, or brand to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Camera and easy to work with!!, August 08, 2014
By Striker
This camera was purchased a couple years ago and I can honestly say I STILL LOVE IT!!! I use it frequently and has so many amazing features. This is my 3rd Nikon. My first was a 35mm. My second was the D3000 I am looking forward to when the next new series comes out. There was not enough change in the 7000 series to warrant an upgrade.
