5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect place to start!, March 18, 2008
By Hilary N. Bullock (Mpls., MN. USA)
I am a 50-year old woman who has decided, at this late stage in life, to get into bike racing. Just got a copy of Selene's new book, and am enjoying it immensely. Her writing style is accessible, and the book holds my interest from beginning to end. Particularly inspiring are the short profiles of women who have made big changes in their lives through biking.

The training plans are helpful - I was able to map out a six month (so far) training schedule using the examples provided, with a few personalized tweaks. I feel excited and confident with my new plan in place, especially knowing it is based on scientific principles, and real life experience. That said, it would be great if Selene would write and publish a separate training log as it is difficult to use this book as a daily log - I don't like to write in my books, and it doesn't really open flat.

Of the books I have purchased thus far - "Cycling Past 50", "Fitness Cycling", "The Complete Book of Long-Distance Cycling", and "The Heart Rate Monitor Book for Outdoor and Indoor Cyclists" - this book is by far the best for a beginner, and the perfect starting point. It is a fun read, and the training information is presented in a very accessible manner. I was able to quickly understand the concepts and apply them to specific goals. Can't say enough about "Every Woman's Guide to Cycling".

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Motivational Movement!, May 21, 2009
By Linda Stockton (Chicago)
I like the easy conversational approach and the examples of women of varying ages, varying degrees of skill and ability taking to the road or (off-road.) I especially like Selene sharing her own struggles and 'bad' choices... allowing us to see her as one of us... and allowing us to learn from her experience. I also enjoyed some of the myths Selene dispells (a huge one about training in the 'fat burning' zone.)... I have argued with significant others about this... it never fully made sense to me why, when given the choice, I would choose to burn less calories than more. Selene states it eloquently with a great example... !

The one thing keeping me from giving it a full 5 star rating is the discussion on vegetarianism. I feel she misses the mark and the 'complete protein' argument is also an old 'myth' that has since been left behind with advancements in science and understanding nutrition. You do not need to eat meat in order to get your protein... (cows eat grass for theirs...!). Here are a few examples of protein packed foods:
Tempeh, Seitan, Soybeans, Lentils, Beans, Tofu, Quinoa, Nut Butters,
Almonds, Bulgur, Sunflower Seeds, Spinach, Broccoli, ....

It is very easy for a vegan diet to meet the recommendations for protein. Nearly all vegetables, beans, grains, nuts, and seeds contain some, and often much, protein. Fruits, sugars, fats, and alcohol do not provide much protein, so a diet based only on these foods would have a good chance of being too low in protein. However, not many vegans we know live on only bananas, hard candy, margarine, and beer. Vegans eating varied diets containing vegetables, beans, grains, nuts, and seeds rarely have any difficulty getting enough protein as long as their diet contains enough energy (calories) to maintain weight.

I am excited to put the pedal to the test and add it as great way to increase my fitness. This book has me very motivated. I hope it will do the same for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Get me on my bike!, March 13, 2008
By L. Neyen
This book really blew me away. I have been a sporadic mountain and road cyclist for years, so I never thought I could learn much from a cycling book. How wrong I was! 'Every Woman's Guide To Cycling' has loads of information for all levels of riders. Emergency maneuvers, training plans, food advice -> all drawing the reader in with Selene's approachable and fresh style. I am now motivated to ride my bike regularly and even try out the book's racing advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great advice and tips, March 1, 2009
By Katrina (Vestal, NY)
Bottom line - great book. Great information. If you are planning to by a bike, get this book. Go the library or sit in Barnes & Noble for a couple of hours, but the info about buying alone is fantastic and makes it worth getting.

This book was so useful for buying a bike and starting out. I will admit to skipping over the MB parts, but her tips for road riding and etiquette were so useful. I read this book before buying my bike, and it was incredibly helpful. I felt confident going into a shop and telling them what I was looking for - and I'm sure it was easier for them to help me, too. Before I read her book I was aiming for a cruiser or hybrid, but reading it helped me realize neither of them would be a good fit - so I went with a road bike, and even after just two days I'd say it was a great choice. Also, she includes price ranges of bikes (depending on type), and also explains the benefits of a more expensive bike. Knowing what to expect certainly helps soften the blow from dropping hundreds of dollars on a bike!

I am (and have always been) a timid rider, but her techniques for cornering have not only helped me improve that aspect of my riding, but also gain confidence that I'm not going to fall over. She also tackles general riding, and explains gear, climbing, and spinning. It is so much easier to climb hills now! She also dedicates some pages to riding in traffic - really helpful, and it helps boost my confidence about riding in traffic (something that scares me).

If you want to diet, race a time trial, or do a century she has workout schedules planned to get you prepared. She covers types of bikes, buying bikes, gear, clothes, traffic, and technique, both on- and off-road. My boyfriend is an avid recreational cyclist and even he found a lot of useful information in there, especially regarding purchasing a bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome!, June 20, 2008
By Crystal Probst (Elk Grove, CA USA)
I have always ridden a bike from Walmart but am training for a triathlon and thought it was time for a "real bike" so I bought this book. I know next to nothing about the bike scene, so this book was perfect. Everything was covered from which bike to buy to training for a race. There were some secrets on how to actually be comfortable on a bike and be able to walk straight the next day even if you're a beginner. I continually go back to this book for info.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Escape to Freedom, September 29, 2008
By Elizabeth (Australia)
I recently purchased a bike and wanted to learn more about cycling. Gears confused me and I had no confidence.

The book is great. I am now becoming more confident riding hills and have learned to use my gears better and spin! I've also learned about eating to ride and a bit about maintenance. Being specifically oriented to women it suited me down to the ground.

Just 2 days ago I went in a 35km charity ride. I was concerned I wouldn't make the distance, the longest I had ridden before was 20km. Well, I did it even the dreaded hill I had heard about! Oh what a feeling!

Morning rides watching the mist over the paddocks and the sun coming over the horizen. No children constantly calling Mummy. Riding along singing a song -- just a brilliant feeling.

Wouldn't have the confidence without reading the book.

Great book. Great sport.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Wish I bought this book before I bought my bike, May 27, 2009
By RS (Marin County)
I had checked books out of the library about cycling but wish I had found this book first!

Great advice for buying your bike and all accessories. Inspiring, not intimidating, for the inexperienced or less experienced cyclist. Bought the right cleats and shoes once I read the book and now bike with more confidence. I bike about 20 miles a week for health and exercise and have no intention of racing but found all the chapters useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Cycling Book for Women, November 2, 2008
By Janie C (Arkansas)
I am so happy I bought this book. I've been cycling on and off with my husband for 7 years but I have recently decided to ride more seriously. While I consider my husband's advice on cycling at professional level, it is nice to get a take on a women's perspective and experience. Ms. Yeager is very knowledgeable from everything to choosing the best bike for the type of riding you want to do to gear and equipment. She also discusses everything from food to safety and everything in between. Her writing is also entertaining and interesting, so you will never be bored with this book. So whether you choose road or mountain biking, leisure riding or training to ride with clubs or teams, you will have everything you need to know in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Every Woman's Guide to Cycling: Everything You Need To Know..., September 17, 2009
By gr8pony (California)
I read the great reviews on Amazon before buying the book, so took a chance. I was very pleased with the book and only I wished I could have bought the book before buying my bike to save me some time. However, it did confirmed some of the steps I took to get the bike. Besides giving tips about buying a bike, the book gave me great tips on riding and the necessary things I needed in case of emergencies. I had my first flat tire this past weekend, and because I read the book, I was ready and took care of it (okay, I had some help by another rider as well). Anyhow, I recommended the book to a friend I met riding over the weekend because it was very helpful me and for first time riders. For those who have been riding for a while you can skip some things, but there are some things that you can learn from it as well.

Overall, I am very pleased with the book and would not hesitate to recommend it to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Well written and empowering, February 26, 2010
By annawritedraw (Maine)
Reading Selene Yeager's book is like having coffee with a dear friend who happens to be a biking and fitness expert. She gives you well-researched facts, industry insider information, the kick in the butt to get going, and the hand to hold when the going gets tough.

I'm 39 years old, and going to ride the bike leg of a mini-tri for the first time. Selene's book has inspired me. I just bought my first bike (with clipless pedals even) and I'm eager to hit the road with her thoughtful training, and riding advice.

A must have for new and aspiring female on and off-road cyclists.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great investment!, January 3, 2010
By CJ Long (Dallas area)
As a cycling newbie, but one very interested in improving both my fitness and my overall speed and stamina, this book was a God-send. I enjoy the way Selene writes... her style is very down to earth and humorous, without being condescending. The most helpful aspect of the book to me is the training plans that are included. I'm sure that I'll get to the point where I'm comfortable designing my own plans (especially with these to help me along!), but having the assistance up front and without a lot of complicated jargon is really making the difference.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Love it!, May 15, 2008
By maricarfreak (NY)
I own a copy of this book and it made me want to take getting in shape seriously. I have no intentions of being in a race but I do plan to lose some weight. I bought a bike before I bought the book but I know that my next bike I will be following Selene's advise. I love this book. It is so helpful. Even to my boyfriend! I just wished that it talked about racing and road bikes less and more about the other aspects of riding and biking.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Useful book for the female novice road bike enthusiast, April 13, 2008
By Carol (Canada)
This book is a great source of information for the female cycling enthusiast. It needed to read about how to select the right bike, how to ride in a group, what to do for training and nutrition. It gave me much more confidence going to bike shops to ask about the bikes and what was suitable for me. I enjoyed reading the book. I would recommend it to anyone who would like some more information about the specific issues faced by women who ride.

As a novice who hasn't ridden a bike since junior high, I found this book to be extremely informative and helpful. I continue to go back to it for reminders and clarification. I purchased a copy for a friend who also is a novice and we compare notes and utilize it for our training for a ride in late October.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  cycling on ice, February 22, 2011
By Erin (Washington, DC United States)
I bought this book about three years ago in Seattle before I was heading up to work on a boat out of Alaska for a few months. My goal was to buy a whole bike kit when I was done and ride down the coast to Portland after getting back to Seattle. I read and re-read that book and it was so helpful as a person with zero knowledge of what I was getting myself into. It was a great find and fueled my daydreaming whiile out at sea. Two weeks after leaving the boat I was in the saddle and ten days later was in Portland feeling like a million bucks. Not enough bikes and too many RV's with TV's in my opinion. Amazing trip.

I just bought her other book about getting back in shape on the bike and am curious as to what adventure this new read will spark.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  For beginners and more, December 21, 2010
By JW (Texas)
The title says it all for this paperback, by a columnist for Bicycling magazine. "Everything you need to know, from buying your first bike to winning your first race." Starting with shopping for a bike & gear; moving on to how to pedal and use your gears; emergency maneuvers; training regimens and diets; bike maintenance--it's all there in an easy-to-read and informative format. I'm a beginner but had this book recommended by a friend who does centuries (100-mile rides)--and even she still dips into this book now and then.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Helpful read for beginner/intermediate riders, October 1, 2010
By Business Gal (NY NY)
This book is a great all-around reference title, with solid tips on how to buy a bike, what gear to buy, and how to ride for safety. It can be dry at times, but the author also peppers her writing with anecdotes about cyclists that have made the hobby their own and clearly loves the sport herself. Definitely worth picking up this book if you are a new biker or an enthusiast who wants to learn more.

Such a wonderful, informative book. As a beginner with a small knowledge base about cycling, this book explains the nuances of everything from finding a bike, to bike-handling, to training for different race/ride events. My boyfriend, who has been racing for three years, found this book helpful for training for an upcoming Time Trial! Great book and I would recommend it again and again!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good tool for starting out!, January 10, 2012
By giftogab (Las Vega, Nevada)
I got this book because I wanted some very basic information. I got it. I have been riding bikes all my life, but it has been years since I was on a road bike. I wanted to start from scratch, relearn gearing and maintenance. I also wanted a very basic training program to get me up and going. I didn't want a book to throw me on the bike for so many miles that I gave up. This one doesn't and the plan is great for beginners. I am a big girl and this book will help me change that while keeping my bike, and me, if tip top condition! I also see that it will asisit as I gain fitness and ability, with further developing my road bike skills.
