Teachers! What a great resource, April 23, 2000

Teachers, this is a poetry book for you to use in your classroom. Being a new teacher, I was fretting about my approach to teaching poetry and making it enjoyable for all my students! I use this book in two lesson plans. In the first lesson plan, I split the class into small groups and gave them a poem to act out for the class. The second, I gave them a poem about an amazing elephant and they had to use the details from the poem to illustrate what the elephant looked like! They enjoyed the lessons tons! I think the key to the success of the lessons was that the poems I used from this book were kid-friendly and funny!

A Pizza The Size Of The Sun
By Jack Prelutsky
I rate this book 5 stars.
I enjoyed reading this book. There are many funny poems in this book, even though a few are hard to read, such as "I was Walking in a Circle" and "My Elephant is Different". My favorite poem is "A Dizzy Little Duzzle" because the end is connected to the beginning. It is also shaped oddly.
Jack Prelutsky writes kind of like Shel Silverstein. They both write funny poems and they both write for kids. If you like funny poems look for other Jack Prelutsky books such as Something Big Has Been Here and The New Kid on the Block.
The drawings in this book are imaginative. They are drawings you would not normally think of, such as the Preposterpus. I think the drawings add to the descriptive language of the poetry.
I did not enjoy poetry as much until I read Jack Prelutsky's poems. I could have chosen a Shel Silverstein book of poems but "A Pizza the Size of the Sun" has some of my favorite poems. It also is less serious than Shel Silverstein's poems. I would highly recommend this book to you.

A Pizza as Large as the Sun - terrific for my granddaughter, January 10, 2006

I gave this book to my granddaughter who is nine and loves to read. When she opened the Christmas present, she sat right down and started to read. She shared some poems with me. They express a different way of looking at a regular thing in a funny way. Days later, she was still glued to the book. It definately kept her interest.

A pizza the size of the sun, has some of the best poems that I have ever read. Although the best one is the main one. It is the pizza the size of the sun. Even though the poems are for younger kids they are great for all ages. If you like poems you should pick up a copy of this book. I recommend this book for anyone who loves poems. Jack Prelutsky could'nt have writen this book any funner.

Engaging! Hilarious! Great fun!, October 29, 1998

Jack Prelutsky's A Pizza The Slice of the Sun is the talk of my reading classes! The poems are a terrific way to engage my remedial readers' thinking skills while tickling their funny bones -- even on a bad day! They look forward to the silly, creative ways Mr. Prelutsky looks at life, and often ask for an extra "listening skills" activity just to get to hear another round of silly poems. We often use the Random House Book of Poetry for Children edited by Prelutsky and Lobel as well. Another classic sure to put a grin on everyone's face! Who says poetry has to be boring?!? A definite MUST HAVE for any classroom library!

Young girls budding on becoming teenagers are hard to please...but this book did it. My 10 year old loved the book and I frequently enjoy hearing her read it to her younger sibling. I feel it teaches children as they are reading it. Not only does it teach them poetry and poems, it also teaches them it is ok to have fun in life...a difficult concept for serious children. I would recommend this book to those who have children who enjoy reading and need help in prioritization.

NO BOY LIKES POETRY, October 18, 2007
By bookwormie

No boy likes poetry? Think again. Mr. Prelutsky brings out the poet in all ages. I gave my grandson a gift certificate at the book store, and he picked out this book of poetry. Clever, fascinating poems with subject matter appealing to kids. Imagine a boy chosing a poetry book out of the 1,000s of other books on the shelf.Check out Jack's web site for a glimpse into his working brain--so colorful. Read the letters kids have sent him (prepare to laugh until your jaw hurts). See why he's so great?

For All Ages, April 11, 2007
By Britt (Indiana, USA)

A Pizza the Size of the Sun was by far my favorite book of poetry when I was a child. I memorized "I'm Usually a Speedy Horse" for an audition for a play once. Recently, I saw this book in a store and immediately snatched it up (along with an "It's Raining Pigs and Noodles" umbrella). Reading through it again, I found that the poems aren't just for children. Granted the themes maybe be childish, the language itself is more sophisticated. Some poems are very adult (not in an obscene way, of course) such as "I'm Drifting Through Negative Space" and "When I Am Full of Silence." I adore this book once again and I recommend it for all. Five stars, six if I could!

This is a fine poetry book brimming with kid-friendly verses. This is one of my favorite poetry books for children, along with Brian P. Cleary's RAINBOW SOUP; ADVENTURES IN POETRY and the late Shel Silverstein's WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS and A LIGHT IN THE ATTIC.

The book A Pizza the Size of the Sun by Jack Prelusty was just okay. I gave this book two stars. My favorite poem was "I Was Walking in a Circle" because it keeps going on and on. Some of the poems were boring. I would not recommend this book to anyone else because I do not like poetry.

a must have for all children ages 2 to 102, May 15, 2010

In general I am not too fond of poetry, be it adult or children's poetry. I ordered this book along with several others by Jack Prelutsky for my 4 grandsons ranging in age from 2 to 7. As I usually do, I read every one of them before they do. Since I am not as eloquent as the author I cannot find the appropriate words as to how to describe how special these books are. Every child and adult with a sense of humor should pick up at least one of Mr. Prelutsky's books and read it. Even though they are written for kids, as an adult I found them to be more then special. He is an excellent author who does things with words that will not only entertain you and any child that is lucky enough to own his books, but after reading them I would not be surprised if this introduction to poetry will result in kids at any age being anxious to read more of Mr. Prelutsky's books. This author is exceptional when it comes to putting into verse life the way kids perceive it. His expertise in making the verses flow and rhyme so perfectly is a literary experience all children of any age should be exposed to. Any adult reading these books to a young child will not be bored and will actually look forward to the forthcoming verbal interaction that will be fulfilling for both the child and the adult. Some of his books are written for children that are reading on their own. These children will no doubt enjoy reading the books that were written for younger kids as well. Don't be surprised if they go back to these books over and over again even when childhood is just a memory. Do a child a favor and open the door to a very special reading experience that will not soon be forgotten.
The books themselves which include both hardcover and soft cover are made so that each page is thick enough to withstand being handled by children and even the soft covered books look and feel as if they are much more expensive than what I actually paid for them. When you hold it you can see how substantial and well made the book is. Like the potato chip commercial says, you can't just read one, after reading one I am sure that you will want to buy all of Mr. Prelutsky's children's books which is exactly what I did.

Prelutsky is among the very best! His wit has great kid appeal, and I'd rank him wayyyyy up there with Shel Silverstein and Brian P. Cleary. This volume is loaded with fun poems that will make kids ask for more!

I really like Jack Prelutsky, December 25, 2007
By J. Boston

|
Although I returned this book for quality reasons, I have owned a copy for a long time. The book is very fun and I love how there is some advanced vocabulary. It is a great way to introduce new words in a very fun way! It's hardly like learning at all, but that's what happens. The poems are a lot of fun!
I purchased the book with the intention of giving it to a three year old. Some of the poems do include sarcasm and/or negativity that I wouldnt read to her just because she wouldnt yet understand that it was a joke. But most of them are perfectly suitable for very young children.
I highly recommend this book, and use your own judgement to decide whether each poem is appropriate for the age child you are reading it to.

A chuckle on every page, January 13, 1998
By jliden@ibm.net (Wilsonville, Oregon)

This book includes a chuckle on each page. My children,11 and 15, enjoyed the poems which were written backwards, or needed a mirror to read. As an adult, I enjoyed the clever rhymes and I think the author was sitting at our house when he wrote 'When Daddy Sat on the Tomatoes.'

Book Review for A Pizza the Size of the Sun By: Jack Prelutsky
This review is by my 3rd grade student, Breanna.
The creators of "The New Kid on the Block and Something Big Has Been Here" have made "A Pizza the Size of the Sun." It is like tons of different drumbeats mixed into one. Here are some of my favorite poems: Miss Misinformation, Hurry Grandma Hurry, I was Walking in a Circle, and A Pizza the Size of the Sun. I think this is a very good book for beginning poets. I love this book. If you like poems, venture into this book.

This book is very funny. From beginning to end. I would read it silently and laugh out loud. I like this book because the poems are funny and brings laughter to so many. He creates so many different and weird characters. He even makes up new words. It reminds me of Dr. Seuss. My favorite poem was "egamI rorriM rouY mA I" because there is a trick to be able to read it. You have to read it in front of a mirror. That was really cool because I had never seen a poem like that. The poet, Jack Prelutsky, is a good writer for children.

I was in my school's Book Fair when my English teacher came up to me. She asked me to look at this book so I did. I skimmed through the page and I was amazed. The poems were so great! She asked me if I wanted the book to be in our classroom and I said yes! I am going to enjoy reading this book in class. I wam also thinking about buying the book myself. You really should read it!
