5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid steps for becoming a better Bike Rider., July 6, 2010
By Michael Wilson

I think this is such an important book because it picks up where so many cyclists stop. First you get interested in cycling, then you buy a bike and some gear. Then you go on a few rides and join a club. Maybe you ride once or twice a week. Before long, you don't know what your next steps are because..

"The fast guys are too fast. How did they get so fast?" "The climbers fly away on the hills. Wish I could do that." And this leaves so many riders with way more questions than answers. Which is why Coach Rob Panzera's Cycling Fast is a must-read guide for anyone (not just racers) looking to find their direction and to take those critical next steps in upgrading their cycling capabilities.

No more secrets on why the fast guys are fast and the climbers fly away. Coach Panzera pulls the curtain back and even reveals the true "A Pro's Experience" to give the average joe a window into the other side of the fence, as professional cyclists deal with the same issues we, the average rider, do.

Top Marks!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Race your bike with Cycling Fast, June 25, 2010
By jonathan lyons
Coach Robert Panzera's new Cycling Fast is a great place to start for the recreational cyclist who wants to get a solid start to road racing. It is also useful for early-career racers looking to hone their skills and, more importantly, to improve the overall effectiveness of their training and racing programs.

Panzera pays particular attention to the all-important mental aspect of cycling, something too many beginner and intermediate racers overlook. Other useful chapters include an overview of equipment choices and bike fitting; proper nutrition; and year-round training.

Like most modern coaches, he draws heavily on periodization theory - the planning and scheduling of workouts in a structured way to build upon, and complement, one another. The general scheme rests on a series of concentric or overlapping cycles of varying durations, and Cycling Fast provides an overview of the theory as well as useful practical drills pegged to specific training periods and goals. Training with heart rate and power are discussed in detail.

Cycling Fast is clear and well-written, with plenty of examples drawn from the author's practical experience as a racer and coach and from the sports science literature. The text is also enlivened by sidebars quoting established professionals, often in their own words. Useful diagrams, photographs, and text boxes on specific topics complete the package.

I am a Masters racer and have worked directly with Coach Panzera for two years. Readers of Cycling Fast will benefit from the same mix of practical experience and theoretical knowledge that has enhanced my own training and racing.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great starting point, July 3, 2010
By Jack Stephens
I am just a recreational rider, and haven't given much thought to club racing or even joining a club. So I thought this book may be more than I needed, but I was wrong, because even if I never move beyond the recreational level, I feel the book was invaluable in helping me understand what to look for in a bike and how to select one that was right for me. I used the knowledge I read in the book, when I went shopping, and much to my satisfaction I bought a bike that fits me and I really enjoy riding. Who knows, maybe someday I will even use the rest of the book to find a club and try some competitive racing. For now, thanks. A good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Cycling Fast, July 26, 2010
By Joe c (Denver CO)
As a someone who has been riding a bicycle for years, but an amateur bike racer I found Cycling Fast very informative. It is an excellent source for anyone interested in the sport of cycling, whether a beginner or a seasoned pro.

From how to find a team, training regimens, diet, and mental training, all aspects were covered in thorough detail. I really enjoyed the tips and stories from cycling pros.

Panzera knows the sport of cycling and was generous to share his knowledge. I highly recommend Cycling Fast to anyone interested in the sport of cycling.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Cycling Fast, January 2, 2011
By Pepperl (Los Angeles)
Bicycle coach Panzera created a comprehensive book. Lots of information is synthesized from his experience and research, and written well. The book is inspiring and keeps one modest in a very competitive environment. As it goes for cycling, if you just want to improve your skills, speed, power in riding and or get better at racing this is the book to go to - excellent.
I wish he could be my coach!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A racing book, December 24, 2010
By jciam
This is definitely a book for racing cyclists. I am a recreational cyclist and thought it might have info on improving my speed. It is 95% geared to racing with little for the recreational rider. I did however find some useful informaition on diet/nutrition and training.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good general purpose book for hi performance cyclists, September 5, 2011
By shopnascar
This is an excellent resource for a cyclist looking to ensure that all the bases have been covered. It starts from confirming fit and some basics and goes all the way through to competitive cycling skills, performance improvement and racing strategies. Printed in 2010, most of the information regarding BMI, nutrition and goal setting is nearly current. But most of the information is general in nature and should and can be easily adjusted to the specific athlete, based upon the desired objectives. As a certified cycling coach, I would recommend this to any aspiring competitive cyclist without reservation; especially at the price point!
