Excellent resource for special education teachers, September 8, 2009

I've been teaching special education for 10 years. This is the book I wish I would have had my first year of teaching. I flagged almost every page while I was searching through for great ideas to use with my students. I definitely recommend this book for any new or seasoned special education teacher/regular education teacher. This book is full of excellent resources. This is a must have and you'll be happy with your purchase! =)

This is a thick handbook, packed with useful resources. The overview of learning disabilities includes information and graphics simple enough for me to use it when explaining their disabilities to my students. The research section is comprehensive and offers ten different graphic organizers that teachers could use ready-made. The law section may become outdated in the future unless they print new editions (though, since this edition has a publication date of 2008, it should be fine for a while, plus it's brief so it doesn't make a big difference for the text). The early child ed chapter provides solid information on developmental milestones and age-appropriate activities. While the student study team (SST) chapter is helpful, each district has their own ways of handling this, so it may have limited usefulness depending on your district strategies. The chapters on assessment (for identification purposes) and planning (for eligibility and IEP processes) are clear yet general enough to apply to different states. The classroom management chapter offered good advice for all teachers, including real-life scenarios to conisder and ideas for utilizing classroom assistants/paraprofessionals. The academic management chapter was a good overview, but the book blew me away in the chapter "Interventions for Specific Problems" with plenty of student work examples, tough scenarios, and clear and simple solutions that could be used the next day. The content-specific chapters (reading, writing, math) were detailed with a plethora of practical strategies and tools to use in the classroom. The final two chapters, about working with adolescents/adults with LDs and about working with the family as a whole, provide great guidance in two areas that are often overlooked by teachers.
All in all, this is a fantastic resource. The weak spots, the law chapter and SST one, didn't detract from the usefulness of the rest, so it deserves 5 stars. Also, the book isn't text-heavy; it has lots of tables, charts, sample forms, and graphics that present the information in varied ways.
I think general education teachers need this for any struggling student, not just those with LDs, and a special educator could use it for students with a variety of exceptionalities. It may be LD-specific, but it certainly isn't limited to LD in its usefulness.

Studying for GACE, October 1, 2009

I bought this to study for a teacher certification test after reading that the official GACE study guides weren't preparing other educators to do well on the SpEds test. (I took the general test for 6-12 grade). This book was great; it did exactly what I intended it to do--help me rock the GACE SpEd exam! My scores were excellent. This book has what you need to get the SpEds perspective as an educator.

Excellent reading for those who inspire to teach exceptional children, December 26, 2010

I purchased this book based on being interested in teaching exceptional children. The reviews of this book was right on target! Easy reading was just what I needed for the authors break down terms for those of us that need a refresher. The price of the book is outstanding for the wealth of information included. I'm currently enrolled in an alternative certification program for special education credentials and with this book along with the Nash books are clarifying my understanding of what I need to know and different ways to teach children. Yes there are other more detailed books on the market but I highly recommended this book for your basics.......simply easy reading, clearer understanding of the basics, and a great reference tool. Thanks Ms. Harwell
