Striking Wildlife Photography, October 2, 2005
By Peggy Stone (San Diego, CA USA)
|
|
I was privileged to attend a gallery show of Nick Brandt's work during a recent trip to Los Angeles, where I saw an advance copy of this book. Of course, no book can capture the full glory of the photos on the walls, just as no book can capture an artist's colors and brush strokes, but it still remains the most remarkable book of wildlife photography I have ever seen. Initially, I was drawn to the noble poignancy of the cheetahs and lions, but the most unexpectedly beautiful photo - a vision of a lost Eden - was of hippos in a tree-encircled lake. That this is rapidly becoming a lost world is apparent. The photos capture what words cannot, so I won't attempt to describe the beauty, sadness and dignity evoked by these images, except to say that this is a much more than a coffee table book. You will go back to it again and again and feel your own soul expand.

BREATHTAKING PHOTOGRAPHY, November 27, 2005
By William T. Clarke Jr. (Richmond)
|
|
Nick Brandt's compilation of his photography of Africa and her wildlife is an amazing work of art. The book is beautiful and the photography transcends all cultures. It exposes not only the beauty of the wild animals but the fragility as well. He captures what appear to be ordinary moments and exposes the majesty of the animals and the danger of the weather. I look forward to seeing more of Mr. Brandt's work.

Stunning work, October 10, 2005
By Robert W. Fivis

Recently picked up a copy of this extraordinary book at a gallery. The tension and intimacy of these incredible wildlife photos is unparalleled. If you've ever even dreamt of seeing the wildlife of Africa, this is the next best thing. All done without telephoto lens, Mr. Brandt somehow brings out the individuality and personality of these magnificent animals. The composition and mood of the "Cheetahs" is breathtaking.

Mankind is not alone in its share of our planet, October 24, 2005
By TomAssini (San Juan, Puerto Rico)

Nick gives back the dignity to the animal kingdom. If you are ever considering acquiring a book about animals in their habitat, this one should be it.
Respect for all the species and the lesson on how we can all survive. At the end we are all inter-dependent species in one way or the other...

Badly printed and too small, and new work and Artist's Edition book is so much better, October 20, 2010
By Wendie L. Wendt
|
|
Like the previous poster, I recently bought Nick Brandt's latest book, ON THIS EARTH, A SHADOW FALLS, from one of the galleries that represents him. I was similarly blown away by the amazing printing of the book. I especially love having all the best photos from his first two books in one large single book. Although it's a shame that the only place you can buy what is by far Nick Brandt's best book is through his galleries, I highly recommend you do so - like the previous poster said, considering the size, the quality of printing, and being signed, it is well worth the $125.00.
If you are looking for another comparison to ON THIS EARTH, check out the photos from A SHADOW FALLS, Nick Brandt's second book. The photos in this book are generally much better, and more sophisticated. In fact, now when I look at my copy of ON THIS EARTH, it looks kind of pathetic by comparison - badly printed, small, cheap, and really does not do Nick Brandt's stunning, emotional photos justice. Simply put, I would not waste your money buying ON THIS EARTH when you can purchase one of his more recent books.

The Ansel Adams of Animals, June 22, 2006
By Gunny (Winnemucca, NV)
|
|
In these days of digital photography it is seldom that we see a collection like this of black and white photographs with sepia and blue highlighting. And even more rare to see a collection of animal photographs that touch the soul like these. Mr. Brandt further concentrates on the animals themselves, usually at rest. Although looking into the eyes of that cheetah as he stares into the distance makes you glad that you are not a small antelope that he might convert into his dinner.
I don't believe that I have been struck by a set of photographs since Ansel Adams. You might call Nick Brandt the Ansel Adams of animals. As Mr. Brandt says in the Afterward, 'I am not interested in creating work that is simply documentary or filled with action and drama, which has been the norm in the field of the photography of animals in the wild. What I am interested in is showing the animals simply in the state of being.'
In this Mr. Brandt has done a superb job.

Nice, but newer work is much better., January 26, 2008
By R. Long (Georgia USA)
|
|
I purchased this book after seeing some of Nick Brandt's current work, which is stunning. These photos are less well-crafted than the newer ones, with far too many artsy out of focus, moody shots. I like moody, but I also like for there to be a focus on something meaningful and for me the center of the elephant's trunk or the side of his body doesn't do it when the rest is way out. Engaging shots such as a giraffe peeking through an entry door to a house would be fantastic, but the giraffe is out of focus. It's an "almost" shot, and as they say close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. I know it is hard to let go of that shot that got away, but there are a lot of those in this book, like a photo of a lion and a giant boulder that is completely out of focus, and the lion turning isn't in an interesting pose at all. There are very good images as well, but the 2007 photos are MUCH better with better sense of place, a clear focus of attention to the subjects and far more intensity and emotional appeal. I look forward to a second book, if there is to be one. I don't think I'll spend much more time looking at this one.

power of photography, March 7, 2006
By J. Kaumeyer (charleston, sc.)

this book is a wonderful display of the power of photography. every image carries with it a tremendous amount of impact. with an awe-inspiring artistic eye, nick brandt managed to display the heart and soul of each and every image he set out to capture. these are not your average wildlife photos. these are intimate portraits of animals you only thought you had seen photographed before. the incomparable Jane Goodall even writes his praises.

Awesome, March 22, 2006
By Zola M. Burgess (Carmichael Ca)

|
Absolutely beautiful! Has the feel of the 1800's when things were more wild and unknown. The colour form of the photo's enhances this feeling. Presents a close look at how majestic and beautiful the animals are! Such a joy to look at when you're tired of the city, people and the constant rat race of life. A peaceful calming experience! Loved it and look at it often.

dissapointed, October 10, 2010
By Aaron S. Bregman

|
I just bought the Artist's Edition of On This Earth, A Shadow Falls from one of the galleries that represent Nick Brandt. It's a huge beautiful, stunningly printed book that combines the best photos from his two books. I now look at my old copy of On This Earth, and realize just how badly reproduced, how poorly printed, the photos are in it. Having seen Nick Brandt's giant prints in exhibitions, the Artist's Edition really does a great job of capturing their essence. This book, On this Earth, does not. So I highly recommend that everyone try and find the money to buy the Artist's Edition of On This Earth, A Shadow Falls instead. It costs about $125 (you can only get it from the galleries), but given its giant size, the number of photos in it from both books, and the fact that it's signed by the artist, is something of a bargain. Many of the photos in On This Earth are great but, because they are so badly printed and small, I am compelled to give this book only two stars.

Stunning, March 1, 2006
By Peter Conway (Evanston, IL USA)

If I could give Nick Brandt's book more than five stars I would. He takes a subject which is certainly not uncommon - African wildlife - and puts it in a entirely new light. His blending of wildlife photography and portraiture results in extremely evocative photographs that touch the soul. Simply put, this is photography at it's finest.

Monochrome Magic, January 4, 2009
By Don Shay (Riverside, CA)
|
|
Most wildlife photography, even that of the anointed masters who suffer great hardships and spend weeks or more capturing a single perfect image, falls more properly into the category of photojournalism than it does fine art photography. Not so the work of Nick Brandt, whose splendid images of African animals are a visual revelation.
Working solely in black-and-white, and without the use of telephone lenses, Brandt captures the heart and soul of his wild subjects -- a dust-bathing elephant in a shimmering cloud, a wind-swept lion facing into a storm, and classic still-life congregations of giraffes and cheetahs and zebras. Just as captivating are his studio-grade portraits of rhinos and chimpanzees and others. But Brandt's most evocative images are his breathtaking wide shots -- some in glowing infrared -- that place these familiar animals squarely in the context of their varied environments in ways that seem altogether new and fresh.
"On This Earth" is like no other book of African wildlife photography. Prepare to be awed.

Brandt's newer books are better..., March 5, 2011
By J. Leo

|
I now own all three of Nick Brandt's books. I purchased them in order from newest to oldest, and I have to say that his first book, On This Earth, doesn't stand up to the rest. It's badly printed, muddy and smaller than the others. A Shadow Falls (2nd book) is better...bigger, better printed and better photos. The best - hands down - is the latest...On This Earth, A Shadow Falls. It's a signed edition that has the best photos from both of the aforementioned...and they look great.

This book is pure poetry and soul!
I cannot choose a favorite image, because so many are simply amazing!
It moves you!
To me a real photography book should generate emotions, and Nick Brandt does that very well!
This book has a unique style, black and white (or better, greys), with some peculiar effects, but to me, that just enhanced the magic.
Anyone who loves animals will appreciate this work of a true artist.
I totally recommend it.

A beautiful work..., January 20, 2007
By C. M. Mulcahy (Shrewsbury, MA USA)

This books contains a number of beautifully printed black and white photographs shot in East Africa. The images highlight the rich flora and fauna of the region, focusing on those animals one would expect to see on a typical African safari: zebra, lions, giraffes, elephants, primates, ostrich, rhinoceroses, and more. This book would make a nice addition to any collection.

By Manuel A. Ayala Gonzalez (Monterrey, Mexico)

The photos are really amazing, but to my opinion there are too many pictures of the same species, like chimpanzees or lions, i was excited because of the backcover photo of hippos in a river (my favorite animal), but it was a little disappointing surprise to see it is the only photo of hippos on the book, with a herd very very distant... maybe too many photos of elephants, but these animal are really photogenic.

Nick Brandt's collection of photography is absolutely stunning. His work is much more akin to portraits than traditional wildlife photography. There is an intimacy between Brandt and his animal subjects which resonates in each photo. Page after page, "On This Earth" shows us the humanity and soul of these animals. Brandt has made a brilliant case for why these creatures have the same right to live on this earth as we do.

The day I got this book I spent almost an hour flipping through the pages and soaking in the beauty of these photos. It was then that I decided Nick Brandt was my new favorite photographers. He captures the African wildlife with so much power and natural beauty that it's almost unreal and his post-processing adds a whole other layer to the photos. I would suggest this book to any photo or animal enthusiast, it is quite simply one of the best photography books I have found.

As an avid photographer - and one who has spent a lot of time shooting in EA - these are precisely the sort of images that make me want to grab my camera and rush back into the Serengeti. It's a well selected collection - perhaps not the greatest photographs I have ever seen, but a beautiful selection nontheless. A wonderful departure from the stock "post-card" photograpy that's been pouring out of the continent, and some are so breathtakingly vivid (like the image used on the cover) that you can almost feel the dust swirl around you, and feel the hot African sun on your neck.
It's a beautiful book. Would make an an ideal gift for the nature photographer, and for the nature lover...

As a Kenyan myself it is very easy to become jaded by all the images of wildlife around me, they really are a "dime a dozen".
However, looking at Nick Brandts work one cant help but be gripped by a sense of awe and respect at the power, beauty and fragility of the world that he sees though his lens. It also serves as a reminder of the burden of responsibility that rests on our collective shoulders to protect and nurture this habitat for future generations.

Africa, my love, June 26, 2007
By R. Middelhoff (Amstelveen, Holland)
|
|
Having travelled extensively in Africa and being a keen photographer myself, I was happy to find this title in one of the Dutch photography magazines. The book is apparently not for sale in Holland, so I bought it at Amazon's.
My collection of photography books consists mainly of black and white photography. I am sure buyers will love the images in this book as much as I do, allbeit some pictures are a bit over the top, due to the infrared film used. Nevertheless the photos are just overwhelming; it feels like standing there yourself!
Next to 'The Great Migration' by Carlo Mari (which has a different approach) and 'Pink Africa' (also by Carlo Mari, and obviously in color) this book is among my favorite books on wildlife in Africa!

Such privilege to see Nick Brandt's beautiful work of animals from East Africa before they all vanish from the earth, and before film photography extinct. Some might argue the quality of the print is not the best, but for the price, the size and number of the plates in this book, this is a steal! How many of us will physically go to East Africa hauling the large format cameras with us, load the film plates, wait for hours, days and months to take these photos, then have them developed and printed in the dark room? This is real photography we're looking at, not digital crap which leaves us with no imagination. We're lucky to see these gorgeous black and white photos.
