1 out of 5 stars.  Dated and somewhat frightening, March 6, 2010
I just received this book along with 3 others I ordered on toddler adoption. We are currently adopting from Ethiopia. My first impression upon starting this book is that it is written like a college term paper. I immediately flipped to the copyright to discover it was written in the nineties. It shows and is just very hard to read. Part of the difficulty in reading this book, isn't just that it is so dry, but within the first 20 pages you have heard one too many horror stories. The information presented is scary and while important to prepare yourself for "the worst", I'm sad to think that it may scare away many adoptive parents. I need a book that prepares me for challenges, but encourages me to proceed. We are motivated to proceed, because of many personal accounts we have heard of children doing quite well after international adoption. I switched to one of my other books Parenting your Internationally Adopted Child and while the information presented is still hard to read it doesn't feel so doom and gloom. I think it's important in the adoption journey to prepare ourselves with information from books, training, etc., but at the end of the day first hand accounts and talking to families who have adopted internationally are reliable too and generally much happier.

3 out of 5 stars.  Reality Check or Fear Mongering?, August 3, 2009
I consider myself a very down to earth person and the type of person who would likely over-think or over-prepare for something rather than be illequiped. So when I read other reviews on this book saying it was negative I though that they were perhaps mis-judging it. I was wrong. My husband and I soon started referring to this book as, "Why Adopting A Toddler will ruin your life and theirs". I have to agree whole heatedly with another person who stated that if you are planning to adopt a toddler that you should wait to read this book until after you have brought your child home.

Having said that, I do think that this book is worth a read and did give some great advice about how to transition the child from their foster or institutional life to home life and some things too look for as sign of negative or positive development. I did feel a bit like the author dumped a whole load of negative on you and then tied a neat little bow at the end saying that really it was worth it which seemed a bit like too little too late after hearing stories of children who tried to claw their parents eyes out or who did not bond with their parents for 8 years and would scream 10-20 hours a day or not respond at all.

I guess in short I have mixed feelings. There was some great information but the book, which I read while waiting for my referral, was so over-whelming that I think a lot of the good tips are lost on me or forgotten because I just tried to get through the book as quickly as possible, like watching a horror movie, and at this stage I am not willing to go back through it to find the gems that made it worth a reading.

5 out of 5 stars.  Reality folks!, May 12, 2008
This book as all books should be read and used as you feel it fits into your family. I loved it all and couldn't put it down. The author is realistic. Don't let this book convince you not to adopt and toddler. Use this wonderful book to consider carefully, learn about possibilities, and enter your adoption process fully aware. I think this book should be required reading before even thinking of adopting a toddler. The author is thoughtful and presents her points without emotional fluff. A great read.

5 out of 5 stars.  Great Book!, May 1, 2008
We are currently adopting a child out of the foster care system. I found this book to be very helpful. It has prepared me well to become a mom through adoption. I would recommend this book to anyone connected to a toddler adoption.

5 out of 5 stars.  Wonderful, March 27, 2008
This is a wonderful, intelligently written, informative book for anybody considering toddler adoption. The first hand experience of toddler adoption by the author links the concept to reality. I absolutely loved this book and would highly recommend it to all perspective adoptive parents.
