Neil Peart is an internationally acclaimed, bestselling, and award-nominated author, and for more than thirty years has been the legendary drummer and lyricist for the band Rush. For decades, Neil prepared and waited to write a book about the biggest journey of all in his restless existence, his ultimate travelogue - a concert tour. Finally, the right time and the right tour: Rush's 30th anniversary trek ? 9 countries, 57 shows, and 500,000 fans.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, August 31, 2010

Peart's book (and books for that matter) are obviously likely to appeal to Rush fans. My guess is that one should at least be a soft-core Rush fan to truly appreciate Peart and the book.
I would describe myself as a Rush fan -- certainly not hard-core, but I have seen them live a few times, have many of the albums (I even had eight-tracks back in the day) and regard ""Moving Pictures"" as one of my favorite albums.
So with that background, I bought the book on dentalBookshop after seeing them live recently. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. For a drummer -- and Peart notes how drummers are typically perceived as intellectually challenged -- Peart is a brilliant lyricist and an excellent writer. Let's face it: this guy is seriously talented.
While his bandmates travel via private jet and stay at four-star hotels, on this tour Peart and a buddy set out to travel via motorcycle between gigs. So the book is partly a travel log, partly a journal and partly about Rush's 30th anniversary tour. We learn what it's like to log serious miles on a BMW 1200 and in doing some see parts of the world (mainly the US in this book, but some of Europe as well) that others miss.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and just bought another of his books. But again, I think you have to be a Rush fan to appreciate it. I, for one, loved the references to some of the lyrics that he wrote (""a fawn-eyed girl with sun-browned legs"" is a girl he had a crush on when he was 14) but these gems will be lost on the casual reader.
