The ultimate guide to baby sign language, with color photos and 200 signs!

You can hear -- your baby can hear -- so whatÆs the deal? Every parent knows how frustrated -- how enraged -- babies become when they canÆt make themselves clear to their families. But now, before they can talk, they can tell you what they mean -- with signs!

Signing has taken the parenting world by storm. Why? Every parent is eager to give their baby the best possible upbringing, the least frustration, and the best head start for achieving in todayÆs driven, competitive society. Research (funded by the National Institutes of Health) has found that signing babies: talk sooner and have larger vocabularies; have stronger parent/child bonds; have less frustration, crying and tantrums; show more interest in books; engage in more sophisticated play; and have higher IQ scores. Now, what parent doesnÆt want that?

Baby signing has been featured on Dateline and Oprah. Teach Your Baby to Sign features photographs of babies signing, plus line illustrations of each sign. And it provides 200 useful signs -- more than any other book -- so parents can have a wide selection to choose from, along with stage-by-stage guidance so theyÆll know which signs to teach first and which to add as they and their baby become progressively more skilled and comfortable with signing.

5 out of 5 stars.  From a language professional, this is a great find!, January 26, 2010
I am a speech-language pathologist and am asked all the time, "Wont signing get in the way of my little one learning to talk?" NO--EMPHATICALLY NO! In fact, adding in sign PROMOTES spoken language! There are too many articles to cite here to back me up, but suffice it to say that when your baby points to milk and says, "mamama," she is already using gestures/signs--they come first before spoken language! All that said, I got this book for my brother and his wife--two CPA's with their first--because it is incredibly user friendly and gives real-world pointers for how to make the signs and in what contexts. It draws directly from American Sign Language, so in all seriousness, if your little one grows up to befriend someone who uses ASL, they will (on a very basic level) be able to "talk" with them! Honestly, a great resource for parents who are looking to make their first year or two with their baby smooth. Wouldn't it be great if you knew what your 7-month old was screaming about?? If he knows the sign for it, I promise you, he will tell you what he wants :) Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars.  Helpful and easy to understand, December 23, 2009
My husband and I found this book very simple and easy to use. Our son is a little too young to start signing, but we have started teaching ourselves a few of the signs - and let our son get used to them. We are looking forward to seeing the progression over the next few months.

5 out of 5 stars.  Easy to use with great pictures, September 16, 2009
I'm not looking for me or my child to become a sign expert, but I wanted to be able to teach him some of the basic signs to assist in his everyday communication. This book covers all the basics and then some. I use it as a quick reference guide and find the instructions and pictures very helpful. I am thinking of buying this book for my child's daycare so his teachers can learn the signs, too. I highly recommend!

We are still waiting for our first sign from our daughter, but this book is great for suggestions and what to expect back from your little one. Would buy this one all over again.
