5.0 out of 5 stars.  My Triathlon Bible, April 29, 2010
By R. Levin (Caldwell, NJ)
I first bought IronFit back in 2008 when I registered for my first Ironman triathlon. My goal as most first timers was to finish. Don provides the information found in other books but in a way that is easy to follow and understand which allows you to concentrate on the training. His training schedules, motivational biographies and training tips keeps me going back to the book for inspiration during the harder weeks of training. I found his race day guidance, with an emphaisis on nutrition a great help on race day.
My goal for my first Ironman was to finish, but following Don's IronFit, I exceeded that and finished fourth in my age group at Ironman Florida.
I have recently purchaesed the 2nd edition of IronFit for the updated training schedules as I prepare for my second attempt at the Ironman. Thanks Don!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Buy This Book, Do What Don Fink Says, Become An Ironman, June 14, 2010
By Scott Boyles
This is one of my favorite books, all-time. Here's why: The Be Ironfit program provided me with the time efficient training plans and advice to become an Ironman in 2008, and again in 2009 (and beyond).

Don Fink (an Ironman age group legend), draws upon his vast racing and coaching experience to inspire and prepare any triathlete to achieve the Ironman dream. Just as important, before I finished reading Be Ironfit (the first time) I felt belief replace my doubts about whether I could ever train for and race 140.6 miles.

This 2nd edition is even more comprehensive (I've read and studied both editions). It updates the latest core and strength training techniques with Don's tried and true time-efficient heart rate based training and swim/bike/run techniques advice. It is extremely well-written and organized and provides invaluable information and tips on: time management, nutrition, pre-race, race day, post race, race selection, mental strategies, and more. You can choose to follow the competitive program, the intermediate program, or the 'just finish' strategy.

With Don's guidance, and this revised edition in hand, I am training for my third Ironman race this year. With consistent adherence to Don's training plans and advice, I continue to get faster and faster. In fact, my P.R.'s continue to drop significantly at all distances (from sprint to olympic to 70.3 to 140.6) -- at the age of 45!

Buy the book, read the book, do what Don Fink says, become an Ironman! It really is that simple.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Outstanding read and resource, June 14, 2010
By PSP (Connecticut)
If you are planning on racing an Ironman in the coming year, I would go so far as to say you have to buy this book. It will probably be the best investment you will make helping you accomplish your athletic goals and allowing you to have more fun along the way. I've raced 2 Ironmans, a Half Ironman, and 5 marathons over the past 3 years and I still go back and re-read certain chapters of BeIronFit. I even take it with me to my races, it's that good.

First of all, Don Fink is one of the most experienced and accomplished coaches in triathlon today. His approach, advice, and training plans have worked for countless athletes at all levels (from beginner to elite). I wouldn't follow a training philosophy or plan if it were not proven. My time and goals are too important to me.

BeIronFit is an exceptional read and resource. Very well written. What's remarkable about the book is that there is something there for everyone. If your goal is to finish your first Ironman or to qualify for Kona, I believe you will benefit from reading this book. Triathlon can be a complicated sport and the book goes into appropriate detail but not overly so. I think the reason I continue to go back to the book is that the philosophy, tips and advice to training and racing are sound - almost fundamental truths. Don not only explains exactly what you need to do day by day, week by week (laid out in your training plan), he clearly explains his coaching philosophy so that you understand exactly why you are doing certain workouts during the different phases of training.

What's interesting about Don and perhaps one of the reasons why he has been such a successful coach is his background. He became an elite triathlete while managing a successful and demanding career on Wall Street. On one level, his story is inspirational. I think many of us dream (maybe secretly) of becoming elite athletes while working full time. More importantly though, he understands what it's like to have a family, manage a career and train for ironman - all at the same time. As a result, this book is packed with practical advice and tips for the rest of us. In addition, throughout the book, Don features several athletes he has worked with where they share their own experiences and advice. Very helpful.

Getting to the starting line is more than half the battle. Reading this book will help you get there healthy, physically prepared, and mentally confident. As a result, you will have more fun and race faster, of that I'm confident.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  From One of Don's Coached Athletes, June 14, 2010
By Michael Lemberg (WNY, NJ)
I purchased the first edition of Be IronFit and was impressed. Don laid out a clear vision of what's required for Ironman success, provided examples of those who had done it (apart from himself), and expanded on the tools needed for the job. To a newbie, the book was worth its weight in gold.

The second edition offers all of the above plus inspiring athlete profiles, nutrition guidelines, fantastic core strength routines, and longer sample plans. You couldn't ask for more!

With the fundamentals of the book in hand, the plans are what set you up for success. As one of his coached athletes, please believe me when I say the book's plans are the real deal!

Don offers sage advice on a topic that has needlessly become overly complicated.

A must-read for those interested in approaching their athletic potential.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Be Iron Fit, October 19, 2010
By Bill Stevens
This book is an excellent selection for the athlete looking to train for Ironman and all that it entails. I found many sections of this book to be helpful in all aspects of the race, from choosing a race, gathering family support, what to expect in the race, as well as a clear and concise training plan for the athlete who uses the bulk of their day working, sleeping, and eating and does not have much time for Ironman bulk training. I like the way the concepts are presented, you get an overall idea of the training package at the start of the book and then it goes into greater detail as you go. This is not a book of stories, although there are several sidebars that give you regular people and their regular lives as examples. I will be using the concepts and the training schedule to train for future races.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  With this book, anyone can do a triathlon, June 13, 2010
By Long Distance Man (stamford, ct)
in 2007 i bought don's first edition of this book to train on my own for my first ironman at lake placid. no other book has such easy to follow and complete training plans. it is a book for all athletes, from the beginner to the elite. after reading this book, there were no excuses not to try or for being too busy. the profiled athletes are an inspiration. in his second edition, don profiles some of his professional and elite athletes, as well as everyday people who just want to finish. it is even more comprehensive than the first edition. i also gave it as a gift to a busy friend who is a mother, new triathlete and works full time with travel, she is totally inspired!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A MUST READ FOR EVERY TRIATHLETE!, April 16, 2010
By R. Russin (NJ United States)
Don's real life experiences as well as the profiles from other athletes he has coached helped to answer many of my everyday training and time management questions. I am getting ready to compete in my first Ironman this year and keep this book near me at all times and plan on having it with me up to race day.

Even though this book was probably not intended to be a motivational book, it has motivated me and has given me the confidence to continue on the journey on being an Ironman.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent book, but updated? I think not., January 29, 2011
By A. Tejani (ontario)
I'm preparing for my first Ironman. I really did get a lot from this book and am following the competitive training plan (for the most part). If I were rating the first version I probably would have given it 5 stars. But this is a 2nd edition - it's supposed to be an updated version.

I was a disappointed in how non-updated it was. All the stories seemed to be from pre-2002 or so, and I would have really liked to have seen some more up-to-date stories. But the thing that really killed me was the section on running and choosing running shoes. He actually instructs us on the "correct" way to run by saying to land on your heel! Then he has his "running shoe expert" talking about how overpronators should get motion control shoes, etc. As far as I'm concerned, all this running information is completely discredited, and I don't know of any long-distance runner these days who lands on his/her heel. They are all trying to become mid-foot strikers in order to avoid injury -- myself included.

I don't want to sound completely negative, but I think if you're not going to make a book up to date, then just do a reprint. If it's supposed to be an updated version, then update it fully.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A must have for Ironman triathletes!, December 26, 2010
By achen2iron
I am a veteran of 2 full Ironman races and training for my 3rd. I have also done several 1/2 Ironman races. This book is a must read just for the motivation it gives you. It really makes Ironman seem doable for the mere mortal person as well as having a good program for the more intense athlete. The heart rate training is really helpful. It is just a really great book for anyone considering doing anything from an oly distance to a full Ironman.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  On the way to Ironman, December 20, 2010
By David
The book is pretty straight forward. It is all about training and provides you with several effective and efficient training options. Basically, it defines the essential training workouts and measures them using heart rate. If you follow the programs you gradually build your endurance. Outstanding book no fluff and plenty of training advice and plans. Finally a training program that is designed to work with someone who has to also go out and be gainfully employed.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Informative, December 9, 2010
By Triman
As a new triathlete wanting to move beyond the sprint and olympic distance this book is a valuable learning tool.
It has 3 training plans for an Ironman race: Competitive, Just Finish and Intermediate. So something for everyone. The training plans are clear but what I don't like is each swim workout is coded with a number - this means you have to refer to the end of the chapter to get the description of the workout. i prefer to have them in one place. An great addition to the book would be an optional electronic version of the workouts. Nevertheless the book has a lot of valuable information.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Use this with the Gandolfo book, November 3, 2010
By Jennifer Aiken (Henderson, Nevada)
I really liked this book because it is supportive and helpful. It is also well organized and easy to understand (not jargon filled). I highly recommend using this book with Christina Gandolfo's book (i reviewed her book also). Even for a non-pro like myself, I felt like I really knew something about triathalons after reading both of these books.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Pragmatic, high-performance Ironman training from a seasoned athlete, July 19, 2010
By C. Curran
Don provides clear, concise training approaches based on proven experiences of his own. I have used Don's advice from his first book to help me complete three Lake Placid IM triathlons (all under 11 hrs). This book takes that advice to the next level...and I am confident it will take me to my next level.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  training made easy, June 30, 2010
By AG
This book is even better than the first. I feel Don is talking directly to me and understands me. His experience will improve my learning curve and I have total confidence in his approach. Regardless of your goals in triathlon this book will help you reach them in a totally organized well thought out plan. He takes the guess work out of the equation, all you have to do is the work. Good luck and see you out there. Steve L.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good core workout, May 4, 2011
By B. Lent
The best part of this book is the recommended core workout. It has a nice set of exercises which can be used as one of your core routines. He uses a stability ball, BOSU, medicine ball as well as dumbells. This is not the first book I would recommend for a triathlete but the core workout is worth the price of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My new training bible, April 14, 2011
By Bracken
This really is the all round most useful book I have read on the subject of training for the ironman. It has, in short, turned my life around, and I haven't even competed yet. It has inspired me to set real targets for improvement and I have gone within six months from not being able to run across the street without getting tired, to being able to run 10 miles before breakfast. I refer to this book frequently and I am following the training schedule. It has not let me down yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Book, December 28, 2010

This book was a great resource to get me through my first Ironman. The "just finish" plan was completely manageable despite having a full time job and other time commitments.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This book helped me to think of the Ironman as possible., November 19, 2011
By Stupid People are Annoying
This is a great book. My only problem with it is the author's advice on a heal strike running style. Ignoring that little piece of technique advice, the rest of the book seems to provide a solid plan to be able to finish an Ironman distance triathlon. I am currently setting up my training plan and using this book as one of my references. I hope to report the training plan works well in another year or so. The book is worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Motivational!, March 15, 2012
By angela frye
Wow, this is a motivational book! After reading half way through it, I selected a full distance Triathlon and backwards planned to figure out the start of my 30 week program. I love the common sense approach to the training, nothing so overly complicated that it takes more time to decode the workout plan then to actually do the race. His basis for the training is heart rate, time and progression. He has the bricks, transitions and two training races (Oly and half iron) worked right into the 30 week plan. He covers all bases so there is no working in additional training on top of this. The only thing you have to do is follow the plan and train. The three different plans are based on how much time you have to commit to training and how you want to finish. He has great time management tips and examples of real people achieving this goal while still working and having a life. If you already enjoy triathlon and want to try a full distance race, read this book. I originally bought it for kindle but I am buying the actual book too so I am be able to thumb through, make notes etc. This is by far the best book I have read on triathlon.
