When Howard Horse invites his friends to a bike competition, everyone is excited ? except Gracie Goat. She doesn't know how to ride a bike, and is so scared she refuses to try. Fortunately her Grandma convinces her to face her fears. Children will relate to Gracie's self-doubt as well as her persistence in this sensitive, upbeat story featuring colorful images by award-winning illustrator Lisa Horstman. The book includes fitness tips for children to put into practice as they play.

Lucy's review, August 14, 2007

I thought it was very good. I like the animals. And I think Gracie is a bit like me. And I liked that Grandma was scared to get her ears pierced.

Not A CYCLIST BUT INSPIRED, July 26, 2007
By Michel Galante (Elmont, NY USA)

This book is a wonderful story that provides a positive message to children. If you try hard you can accomplish anything. The author applies some of her personal experiences that children can relate to in today's society. I hope to see more from this author. My neice loved it. I recommend this book for ages 5 and up.

Olympian inspires and educates, June 9, 2007
By Valerie R. Hansen
|
|
Delightful story with theme of conquerring fears, teamwork, and inspiration. Beautifully illustrated.
This refreshing story from real two-time Olympian will inspire new generations to the joy of accomplishment, fitness and the universal language of sports. The accompanying fitness tip (following story) covers proper hydration during sports, and how to tell when you are dehydrated, providing a ready-to-implement life-long lesson.
Hopefully the full series will be out before the 2008 games in Beijing.

Fabulous inspirational story, November 5, 2009
By S. Goldsmith

I bought this book for my 4 year old daughter and it became a favorite after our first read. We read Gracie consistently for a few months and one day our daughter said "Dad, take off my training wheels I want to ride like Gracie Goat." After two days of tip over's, starts and stops, a few mild scraps and suddenly she was off and riding on two wheels!
This book is a great story that shares important life lessons through sports. Gracie's fears to learn to ride a bike and the determination she shows in her effort are lessons written and illustrated in way our daughter could relate to. She kept trying just like Gracie and she accomplished her goal of riding her bike with two wheels. Gracie is still our daughter's inspiration and we whenever she is on her bike; she becomes Gracie for at least one short bike race.
We are big fans of the Barnsville Sports Squad stories and look forward to the next book!

inspiring fun, April 25, 2009

Gracie Goat's Big Bike Race and Shawn Sheep the Soccer Star (Barnsville Sports Squad) make a nice combination of books designed by Erin to inspire children to take up team sports. While cycling is often considered an individual sport, Erin highlights in this book the team aspect, with Gracie giving up her water bottle to her faster teammate. But while teamsmanship is the dominant message of the Shawn Sheep book, in this work the main lesson is to overcome ones fears in order to achieve goals. One particularly nice way in which this is illustrated is that Gracie's grandmother agrees to get her ears pieced if Gracie will learn to ride a bike and enter a race in which she wants to participate. Challenging ourselves isn't just for kids.
I wouldn't quite put this book among such 5-star company as Seuss or Where the Wild Things Are, and I only recently gave it to my niece so I won't find out for awhile whether it will fall into that "read over and over again" category of truly great books. But while the story is obviously and appropriately simplistic by adult standards, it clearly enforces messages I like: the importance of challenging ourselves both physically and emotionally, something I'd wish I'd done more of as a child, and the importance of teamwork in sports. These lessons are not so frequently found in the genre, especially with a female role model.
Author Erin Mirabella is certainly qualified to deliver them: she was (and could still be, had she not retired to have children... and write books for them) an international-class cyclist, both on the road and on the track. If she publishes any more in her Barnsville Sports series, I'll certainly buy them without hesitation for my nieces.

Excellent Motivation, June 27, 2007
By FiiN (Baltimore, MD USA)

My 4 year old daughter LOVES this book! I had to read it for a week straight for her, being a cyclist myself, I didn't mind. My daughter now wants to go for a bike ride every day I get home from work. The book it self is incredible with conveying the value of team work. I highly recommend this book for all aspiring cyclist out there. The only negative is that my daughter wants to put pizza in her jersey poket on every ride, read the book and you'll understand why.

Gracie Goat a Big Winner with Our Little Girl!, December 27, 2007
By Jennifer Gandolfo
|
|
We initially found this book in one of my husband's cycling catalogs and thought it was cute. We went ahead and ordered it and it has turned out to be a big hit with our 2-year-old daughter. It is also very educational in terms of using real cycling terms and teaching the kids that winning is not always everything. Highly recommended!
