Product Description:
Radio Flyer #34P - Classic Red 10 Tricycle w/push handle Features: Removable push handle adjusts to 3 positions Chrome handlebars and fender Sturdy steel construction Durable steel spoked wheels with real rubber tires Adjustable seat 10"" front wheel Assembly required For ages 2-4 Dimensions: Body: 25 1/2" x 21 1/2" x 21 5/8" Front Wheel: 10" x 1 1/4" Rear Wheels: 7" x 1 1/2" Weight: 19 lbs.
A tinier version of the traditional Radio Flyer steel trike, this 10-inch classic couldn't get any cuter without an anxious toddler onboard. Wide handlebars with grips, matching red pedals, a step in back for piggybacking, and a wide two-color seat give it a distinctly retro look. But its old-fashioned style doesn't take away from its functionality--the ride is smooth. --Diane Beall

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Not the best you can buy - needs to be heavier, February 20, 2005
By c2 (Dublin, Ohio)
We bought this tricycle for our three-year-old and had the same problem as everyone else here has - the steering on the handlebars just doesn't stay put. We've had to adjust ours numeous times too. It gets used, but it just isn't all that safe. You HAVE to use a helmet with this guy because it's VERY easy to tip over, which is a huge deal for the age group for which this is intended. It's nice that they kept the classic styling but there's one thing they shouldn't have kept - how dastardly easy it is to get your foot under that back bar and scrape the top of your foot! I did that a zillion times as a kid and now, I'm doing it again with my child's bike! I HATE that! And, I have the scars to prove it.

All-in-all, if you like nostalgia, then by all means, avail yourself of this product. But quite frankly, I'd buy something else more study. I definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND anyone letting their child use this product unsupervised. It just tips over way too much. I get the willies each time I see this guy go down the driveway. Good thing I've been there each time this thing has tipped over.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great, but front handlebars slide around, November 1, 2002
By tweets32 (Pasadena, MD USA)
My 20 mo old son loved riding this bike in [a local toy store], which is why I chose it. I think he liked it because the seat was high and he could push himself with his feet. He's not yet able to use the pedals. I have a smaller plastic trike, which he never uses because it's too low to the ground and too hard to push himself. My only complaint is that the handlebars have a locking slide button and they're hard to install. Maybe I did something wrong but our handlebars move around and I think that I may have stripped the screw trying to keep them tight. I think that the bike would have been better without the locking mechanism anyway(which is used to lock the front wheel when you use the push bar to push your child.) What kid actually lets you push them anyway? Mine won't let me touch that pushbar. He'd rather keep pushing around with his feet.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  I can't recommend this trike to anyone, October 21, 2002
By A Customer
I bought this for my 3 year old thinking it would be great. In reality, the seat is too high and the trike can tip easily. Also, he had a very hard time reaching the pedals and controlling the trike. If I could do it again, I would buy him a regular little tiny bike with training wheels instead. They actually are sturdier and sit lower to the ground.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Just like the ones we used to ride!, August 30, 2005
By imatechfan
This is a fantastic classic trike. It's very sturdy, good-looking, and a lot of fun for a toddler.

The push bar attaches very firmly and is an adjustable length, which means that it works well for parents of all heights. This model doesn't have the "steer using the push bar" feature of other models, but it's simple to take control of the steering by simply pushing down slightly on the bar to take the front wheel of the trike off the ground (taking care that your toddler doesn't slide backwards, of course).

My two-year-old is tall (36") and just reaches the pedals; I wouldn't recommend this particular model for kids under the 36-inch mark if learning to pedal is a goal. My son loves to put his feet on the pedals while an adult pushes the trike using the push bar. I think that's a great combination for kids who are learning to pedal; it lets them get a feel for the motion of pedaling while they're still developing the strength and coordination to be able to take over for themselves.

This tricycle doesn't have all the features of other models (e.g., seatbelts, freewheeling pedals), but I wasn't looking for that in a trike. I was looking for a trike that would start teaching my son a little more independence (e.g., pedaling and steering) as well as teaching him to take some responsibility for his own safety (e.g., wearing a bike helmet, being careful about how he gets on and off). And this trike is small enough that even if he does take a spill, I think it's unlikely that he'd be seriously hurt.

Overall, this is a great, sturdy, old-fashioned tricycle at a great price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Do not buy this trike, July 2, 2003
By Michael J. Smith (Cinnaminson, NJ)
My daughter received this tricycle for her 3rd birthday. She enjoys riding it, when it is not broken. Metal forks split the front wheel, but the petals are attached to the metal forks by reinforced plactic joints which slide into the forks and hold the wheel onto the forks. The plastic joint has broken twice in six months, from normal use. While Radio Flyer has been helpful in sending replacement parts, and has now offered to reimburse for the cost of the tricycle, neither helps my daughter, who has a tricycle she cannot use. Shame on Radio Flyer for such a poor design!!
Other reviews are also accurate in that the tricycle does tip over easily while turning and pedaling.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Keep Looking, Don't Buy, April 9, 2003
By Stephanie Carney (Memphis, TN USA)
I bought this particular trike for my 22 month old and wanted to stick with the "classic americana". What a mistake! If I still had the receipt, I would return it. This trike tips very, very easily. It is difficult for a younger child to learn to steer, therefore, the adult push bar SHOULD come in handy. However, on this particular model, the adult push bar is completely useless. You cannot assist with steering, if you do, you will tip your child. The adult push bar is only useful for a straight line ride. I wish I had bought a more durable, sturdy trike!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great trike for beginner, January 6, 2002
By A. Girl (midwest)
I bought this trike for my son who is just under 2 years old. I attached the extension bar at first so he could get the hang of pedaling. He is avg height and can reach the pedals, but still cannot make it go. He has fun just making it go with his feet on the floor. He soon will be old enough to pedal by himself. This is an excellent beginners tricycle, and the seat extends for older kids. This is the trike to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  dangerous, November 26, 2001
By "giscogoat" (Carthage, New York United States)
I bought this for my 2 year old grandchild. We took it out of the box and the part that should attach to the front wheel was broken. Thank goodness it didn't happen while the bike was being ridden. The bike in general is good heavy metal, the tires are good and sturdy, yet the most important part that holds the wheel on to the rest of the bike is plastic. It was returned promptly. In my opinion the bike is dangerous.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great begining Trike!, July 6, 2002
By A Customer
The push-bar is a great idea! I bought it for my 2 year old niece, but the push-bar made it fun even for her little sister. The styling and overall construction is better than most toys today. Anyone who is having "trouble" with it tipping, that's what three wheelers do if they turn it to sharp: motor skills are learned.
The assembly was easy and intuitive. Toys-R-Us was great! One of the pedals was broken during shipping (I ordered it trough Amazon)so I took it to the local store and the staff cheerfully gave me a new whole new wheel and pedals as the pedals are pressed on. I highly recommend this trike!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great purchase!, March 12, 2004
By Anna (Salt Lake City, UT USA)
My husband and I purchased these tricycles for our 2 year old twins. They live on these tricycles during summer and love them so much. The push bar was great for when they were learning to navigate them, now they are pros! They especially love to ring the bell. We bought them baskets to put on them to gather things when we go on walks and they couldn't be happier. We have never had any problems with them tipping over or with any of the parts. When putting them together we were careful in following the directions and have no problems with them at all. I highly recommend them, they are a great price for all the fun they will have!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  I should have read the reviews first, December 26, 2003
By A Customer
Like the other reviewers, I am sorry I purchased this trike. I too had a moment of nostalgia and always thought Radio Flyer created good products, therefore, I bought it for my grandsons. It is very easily tipped over which leads to lots of tears and frustration. The handlebars are constantly crooked and it's driven me nuts trying to "right" them. For preschoolers, I'd recommend Step 2's Tractor--very durable, easy to pedal, and kids love it (especially with the cart/wagon accessory attached), and it's never tipped over. I've learned my lesson: Always check out the reviews on Amazon before purchasing toys.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Cute, but not safe, January 24, 2005
By S. Fiereck (Portland, OR)
We have been very disappointed with this trike. Not only will the steering wheel not stay positioned properly, but it is very tippy and dangerous. My son has had this trike for a year, and now at 3 it is still a hazard. Children sit up so high and the broad turning radius causes the trike to tip over very easily causing a big fall. We are going to buy a Kettler instead and anticipate better results. Cute to look at, but best left at the store, at least for 3 year olds.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  For older kids, March 6, 2005
By mom (Arizona)
I bought this for my son's 2nd birthday. He is turning 3 in a few weeks and finally can touch the pedels. This toy should be for 3 and up. It has been basicly sitting on my porch for a year untouched. And the weather here is nice all year. Also a wheel fell off. He barely ever used the bike. now he can reach the pedels and he can't ride it because we have to go buy a cap to hold on the wheel.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Buy it if you lilke its classy style, November 11, 2004
By T. Tu (USA)
Pros
- Classy style
- Long bar for pushing
- stand on the back
- Price is reasonable for 2-3 years of use

Cons
- It can rust a bit (it is metal)
- A bit noisy (it is metal)
- After 2-3 years, it is not in a good enough shape for giving it away. Nowaday, most people want "the best" for their kids.

I have no problem with the construction/fit. I never have to tighten anything. When my kids were too young to steel, I just asked them to hold on to the handle and pushed the bar down a bit so that the front wheel rode up. This way, I could steel the trike when I needed to. In the beginning, they learned to steel while they sort of pedalled and I pushed (in the park). Then they learned to pedal and steel at the same time.

The stand was useful for a while. My 3 year old could ride while my 1 1/2 year old can stand at the stand on the back holding the bar while I pushed.

Make sure they all wear helmet all the times:-)

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great tricycle for lilttle ones, November 28, 2001
By "luwiseman" (Kannapolis, N.C. United States)
I bought this tricycle for my 2 year old little girl and she can easily reach the pedals. We love the attachment on the back of the tricycle to push. It took awhile to assemble, but well worth it in the long run. Would recommend this for toddlers who can't reach the pedals on the 12".

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Classic Red Radio Flyer, November 23, 2001
By A Customer
I bought this for my daughter for Christmas last year. I felt it being a classic it should be a durable bike to purchase. My daughter rarely rode the bike. It easily tips over when your child turns a corner. The Wheel fell off in the first 3 months, the rubber handle bar grips fell off, and the handle bars keep losening and need to be retighted. My daughter now has a cheap low to the ground trike she loves.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Handlebar concern, June 29, 2002
By Lou Graham (Cleveland, Ohio USA)
We purchased this trike for our 2 year old. Putting it together was no problem until I got the the handlebars. Instead of the "old fashioned" bolt that held the handlebars in place, there is a ring that you slip around the tongue where it positions onto the bike. You tighten the ring to secure the handlebar in the forward position. Both my husband and I tightened the bolt as far as we could but the handlebars are still not as stable as I would like. When she gets off the trike, the handlebars turn independently of the front wheel. I would return this trike if I could find my receipt.

The seat isn't real stable either. It twists from side to side.

With research I'm sure that there are much better tricycles out there although I liked the retro look but my daughter's safety is more important.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  pedal problems, June 18, 2002
By A Customer
I got this trike for my 2 1/2 year old. This is her first ride-on with pedals. But this is not the trike to learn pedalling on! The wheel rotates independantly from the pedals, hence, if you push the trike, the pedals don't spin, and, when my toddler tries to pedal she can't get momentum going because the trike will just coast without spinning the pedals with her. This same feature is quite dangerous because the toddlers it is designed for, may not remember to take his/her feet off the pedals to stop. When the child stops pedaling, it just coasts - think a two wheeler, if you don't hit the breaks, it keeps going.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  If assembled correctly, this is terrific!, April 9, 2010
By Just a guy (Westchester, NY)
My 2 year old LOVES her trike. Someonne complained that the seat was too high and his kid couldn't reach the pedals. The seat is adjustable up and down about six inches. At the lowest setting, your kid should be able to reach the pedals.

People complain that the handlebars don't work, but I bet they didn't tighten the bolt correctly - or maybe they have changed the design. Mine works perfectly with no issues at all.

This arrives in a box with about ten well wrapped parts that need to be assembled. If you have a socket set, it will help. I had this together in about 15 minutes - and most of that was unwrapping the individual parts.

This is strong and well made. It will last for many many generations without question.

The real rubber tires (not inflatable - solid rubber) make this smooth and quiet to ride.

A helmet should be mandatory - not because your kid is likely to be injured on this, but because it starts good habits. My life has been saved several times by bike helmets (I have ridden a road bike for most of my life), and I hate to see kids without helmets. My 2 year old calls it her "bike hat" and we were able to find a cute pink one for under $20.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent gift for my granddaughter, January 12, 2007
By ladydisaster (Sacramento CA)
I can't believe how quick I received this item (within 2 days of ordering) and it is a sturdy trike, made the old fashion way. My granddaughter loves it and without her being able to peddle, we can push her around. Within a week, she is already picking up on how to put her feet on the peddles and make the tricycle go on her own. This was my favorite Christmas gift to give. Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fun Trike for Outings, October 2, 2009
By J. Janca
My soon to be 3yr old can pedal but not very fast and we have lots of hills in our neighborhood. Taking a walk without a pushing rod turns a 30min walk into a 2 hour ordeal. The cheaper tricycle's have plastic pushing rods/frames and those do not hold up for very long. It also has real rubber wheels which seem to grip the pavement better then plastic ones. The only complaint I have is that the handlebar needs to be tightened quite a bit as it can come loose. Other parts need to be re-tightened about once a month. Otherwise it is a very good tricycle and I recommend it to anyone looking for something better then the cheap plastic ones.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Horrible Handlebars, June 22, 2009
By Doting Daddy (USA)
It's cute, but there is a major flaw: the handlebars are supposedly secured by a bolt that squeezes the base so tightly that the handlebars won't move. The problem is that only Lou Ferrigno, in character, would be strong enough to tighten those handlebars so that they don't jump out of alignment the minute a toddler turns the wheel. I am a 40-year-old man generally regarded as VERY strong, and I tightened the bolt with all my strength; but the handlebars still jump out of alignment when my son turns the wheel. I've seen from these reviews that some grandmothers and teenagers are putting these together and saying they might not have done it right. Well, I bet they did it right; it's just a design flaw. One might be able to fix it by adding washers (I have yet to try that) or by drilling into the metal and putting a bolt or screw through the handlebar mount and base so it can't move. Or, as one reviewer said, by going to a bike store to see if they can fix it. But is that what you expect to have to do with a brand new toy?

By D. Listopad (North Carolina, USA)
We purchased the 10" Radioflyer tricycle for our son. The pole on the back is adjustable and helps to save your back as you help your child to learn how to steer. Our son is a little too short for the tricycle, but he will grow into it, and the seat is adjustable for years of enjoyment.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Flying on the radio flyer, May 6, 2007
By Jean (Clayville, RI)
My 2 year old son LOVES this tricycle. I gave the durability only a 4 because the extended handle is a little wiggly but is not broken, but the bike itself is VERY durable so maybe I should have given it a 5. He can barely reach the pedals, but loves to push himself around and once he gets some momentum he can use the pedals. I highly recommend this tricycle to anyone who is getting it for a younger child that might not totally understand steering accurately yet. We love it and are so happy we got it for him for his second birthday.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for a small Preschooler, January 7, 2007
By Misty Martinez-Bohannon (Keene NH)
Bought this model due to my daughter's PT advice that a trike with rubber tires might be easier for my daughter to learn how to pedal. The rubber tires really make it easy for traction as she learns how to pedal with us using the push bar. She is loving learning to do it herself with a few pushs from us every now and again. My daughter is a small 4 1/2 year old. She is just over 37 inches and this trike will be able to grow with her.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Handlebars are useless, April 21, 2010
By tbr (New York, NY)
Must admit got seduced by the radio flyer name and thought this would be great for my 2 year old, and it does look nice. The only problem is that the bike is useless because the handlebar keeps coming loose and out of alignment. It is just poor design, b/c you cant tighten the bolt any more. Couldnt do anything with it short of welding the handlebars in place, so decided to swallow the $20 paid to amazon and buy a new trike.

I think radio flyer was once called 'the american classic' or something like that. Well I bought two of these for my twins and I can tell you that the parts are poorly made, difficult to assemble properly, and feel very cheap. Spend the extra money and get something more solid than this, these are horrrible!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  radio flyer classic red, May 3, 2009
By petra (portland, or)
We got the tricycle for our 2 1/2 year old son, and he loves it. We have no problems with tipping over so far. The tricycle is very heavy duty and has a nice feel to it. We use the push bar more as a break, our son gets kind of fast and we hold on to it when we approach a street crossing, however I don't think if you have to use it as a push bar there are limits to it when it comes to curves.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Recommend it, January 18, 2009

I'm glad I chose this bike. Much more durable than most of the others I looked at. It was easy to assemble and the handle removes easily for times when it's not needed.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Trike For the Price, October 23, 2008
By Mrs. Herring (Fort Riley, Kansas USA)
This was the trike that we had when my oldest boy, now 7, was just starting to ride. For nearly 3 years we walked it across a busy intersection to get to the park that was on the other side and the handlebar is what made this such a doable thing. It allowed my son to ride his bike and provided me with a means of controlling the situation for his safety. It was obviously a very sturdy toy as well. It survived 3 years of my rough and tumble boy and was eventually passed on to a neighbor.
The one problem with the product was its weight. It did tip over much more easily than I would have liked which led to several falls and even a few tantrums.
I am currently looking for a new trike for my youngest boy and although I am doing my research, in hope of a heavier product, I will probably come back to this one if the evidence isn't overwhelming in support of another because I know this is a great product.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My two year old loves it!, September 30, 2008
By Olivia's Mommy (West Virginia)
I purchased this for my daughter for her second birthday. She loves this tricycle! It was easy to assemble and is built very well. The pole comes off easily and it is very handy to help guide them befor they can peddle. I would recommend this product.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Radio Flyer Tricycle, August 30, 2008
By lyn marcus (AZ)
this was a third birthday present for my grandson and he has enjoyed riding it both outside and inside their small townhouse. He can travel fast enough to have fun and it seems very steady. The holding bar seemed like an attractive feature but is only needed when he needs help going up a hill. He rides it several times a day.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Sturdy little classic, January 18, 2008
By R. E. Clancy (TEXAS USA)
Radio Flyers are known for their quality - sturdy and well made. The only problem I had was of my own doing. By the time I got my 2 year old one of these, she was ready to ride it and I didn't really need the handle. It comes off easily so thats not a big issue... just something to think about if you want this model. There is a stub that the handle clicks on to that I removed (simple with 2 screws) so that she wouldn't accidentally fall on it, or whatever. Great bike overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Every one of my grandkids love this trike!!, January 7, 2008
By Vicki Bauer
This tricycle is great for young kids learning to pedal and steer. The push handle allows an adult to control direction and speed and the little one to join in on family walks and outings. And the Radio Flyer reminds me of being a kid, myself!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Positive, September 7, 2007

I read other reviews on this tricycle prior to purchasing. I agree about the seat not sitting perfectly straight but I think it bothers me more than my son. I love the push bar. This seems to be the only tricycle small enough for my son to reach the peddles as he is a little short at just under two years old.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Tricycle, June 1, 2007
By Jen (California)
I think this is an adorable trike. However I was lead to beleive by the picture that you would be able to steer the trike using the push handle. This is not the case. If the child is learning to pedal and steer it is not a useful toy as you need to navigate for them. We bought a different Radio Flier for our son and we were able to steer it from the push handle so we beleived it would be the same.
