User Review: Thule 982 Bicycle Frame Adapter for Strap/Hitch Carriers, July 10, 2009
By Consumer (California)
|
|
I purchased two Thule 982 Bicycle Frame Adapters for Thule 964 Revolver 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack from the Amazon retailer, Rack Attack. PROS: 1) Because of the numerous different bicycle frame configurations, it will quickly become apparent to the strap/hitch carrier user that mounting the bicycles level is difficult. Attaching the Thule 982 Bicycle Frame Adapter ends to the bike's handle bar and seat stems will make this procedure much easier. For this application, the product seems well designed. CONS: 1) One of adapters I received from the Amazon retailer had rusted bolts while still inside the packaging! However, shortly after being exposed to the ouside environment during use, all the lock bolts on both adaptors quickly rusted. At the stated MSRP, stainless steel hardware would have been the fair and better choice. 2) The rubberized coating on the metal ends of the adaptors will ultimately tear or wear down due to use, UVA exposure, etc.. As a result, the exposed metal ends of the adaptors could damage the bike's finish. Take care to protect the rubberized coating during use and storage. In conclusion, it is my opinion that the Thule 982 Frame Adaptor is both a well designed and needed accessory for the strap/hitch carrier user.

Bike adapter worked just fine, January 6, 2009
By G. Angelella (Athens, GA USA)

This bike frame adapter did exactly what it was supposed to and was shipped and received in a timely fashion. Thule should, in my opinion, supply bike adaptors with their hitch carriers free of charge, or at the very least be more women- and child-friendly by posting warnings that these bikes will not fit the carrier without an adaptor.

Good solid product, probably unnecessary, April 29, 2008
By Puddle Pirate

I bought this item thinking that I needed it because the cross bar on my bicycle is at an angle. I was totally wrong. Most people will never need this. I talked to my local bike guru- he said they were unnecessary to carry your bike safely and he was right. I am now ebaying this item because I don't need it.
Basically, if you want to make very very sure that your bike does not get scratched enroute while it is in your bike carrier, use this product. It will make sure that your paint doesn't become scuffed because of friction between the bike, brake cable and bike carrier. However, if you're like me, and you don't mind a few tiny scratches every now and again, it is totally unnecessary.
Solid product, could hold a house up in an earthquake, totally unnecessary for the average person.

Too big for kids bikes, July 9, 2009
By p bear (Chicago, IL)
|
|
I bought two of these because my kids bikes do not have a top bar. The product description says to attach it to the seatpost and headset but since the adapter is too long, I had to attach it to the seatpost and the handle bar. The bikes rest on the carrier at a steep angle, but it still works. Just be aware of this if you have small bikes.

Thule 982 Bicycle Frame Adapter, April 29, 2010
By Rails n Trails Biker (Bloomfield, CT United States)

I am very satisfied with the product; it does exactly what it was meant to do-- provide a crossbar for my woman's bicycle so that I can attach the bike to my car rack. It took me a little while to figure out how to open up the ends of the crossbar to attach to the bike since no instructions were provided (you need to push in those tiny gold buttons to release the end connectors) but once I got that down I've had no problems. I am very happy with the product and give it my full endorsement.

Ingenious Idea, May 28, 2008

This product has come in very handy for my new Thule bike rack on my hatch. Now-a-days most bikes do not have a straight bar to put across the rack forks and this item alleviates many issues I would encounter. Definitely a must have for trunk and hitch racks.

Did not fit bike, July 26, 2008
By S. Cook (United States)

Make sure this items fits your bike. The bike frame was too big to fit in the adapter. I had to connect to seat bottom and handle bars. After first rain, I noticed rust on bar. Walmart has a similar adapter for less.

Works Great!, June 17, 2009
By K. Payne (Janesville, WI USA)

It was a little hard to figure out how to use it initially, because it didn't come with any directions. But after I figured it out it worked great! The only thing is that you can't use the stablizing part of my bike hitch when you use it, but the bike didn't really blow around without that. I would recommend it to anyone!

bike rack accessory does the trick, July 26, 2010
By L. Beeson

I have struggled with getting my Cannondale f400 bike on the Thule car rear rack since I bought it. I even damaged the front shock boot and spent almost $50 getting it replaced. My bike does have a top bar, but the geometry is such that it just will not fit on my two-bar rack.
This very simple accessory clamps on in seconds and holds your bike level on the rack. I was surprised at its ease of use and am still mad at myself for waiting so long. As you drive down the vacation roads, you will see bikes hanging at any number of angles as people struggle to fit them on their racks.
Good job, Thule, and good job to Amazon for giving me quick, efficient service. I have used the rack twice in the last month on very long car journeys to vacation. I still hate packing and putting the bike rack on my car, but at least I can hang the bike quickly and evenly, perfectly centered to the back of my car.

The button to open the adapter is very hard to press. I bought a Saris that was simple and much better as a replacement.

A necessary accessory for many bikes on the Thule Carry Me, February 19, 2012
By suburban_bird (Bethesda, MD, USA)
|
|
We bought this after we discovered that none of our 3 bikes would fit on the Thule Carry Me spare tire bike rack (we were only looking to transport 2 at a time by the way). Rather annoyingly the fact many bikes won't fit on the rack without this wasn't really explained in either the advertising for the rack nor the instructions that came with the rack. We have 2 x Specialized Hardrock Sport bikes (front suspension only, 15" & 17" frames) plus one Specialized Tri Cross bike. None are women's frames. None we thought would be classed as non standard.
Anyway after discovering we couldn't get our bikes on the rack we were ready to sell the Thule rack and go for something else that we knew would take our bikes more easily. When we saw this adapter was available we decided to give it a try. Fortunately it works just fine with all our bikes. It's easy to fit (but see below for a minor grumble about that) and seems secure. We are ordering another one but most irritatingly for us is that with current retail it adds over $70 to the cost of the rack in order for us to use it. Thule should either supply at least one with the rack or be much clearer about what bikes will fit on the frame.
Finally I should say something about the first adapter we received. It arrived from Amazon looking like it had come from the back of someone's workshop where it had sat for years! The outer box was fine but the adapter packaging was grubby and the top label had come away from the packaging. There were no instructions with it at all. It may be that Thule don't supply instructions but they might have been useful. We found some video instructions that someone had posted on You Tube. It's simple to use but one end is larger than the other and so you need to make sure you get it the right way round. I'd also say that, given the state of the packaging and the fact that the one on the Thule website looks slightly different, Amazon have a caseload of an older design. We've just ordered another one so I'll see what state that one is in!

A decent product, June 7, 2011
By Get Cam (Chicago, IL)

My first impression is that the fit and finish wasn't exactly up to typical Thule standards.
Apparently a generic cookie-cutter product with Thule logo slapped on it.
However, it will do the job.
