Super bike rack, September 3, 2007
By G. Watson
|
|
I just completed a 500 mile trip to Maine with three bikes on this rack. It was attached to my CR-V. We encountered all types of road surfaces from high speed highway to dirt roads and the rack preformed very well. The bikes (two mountian and one kids) were held firm and without any sway or wobble. To mount and dismount the rack was a piece of cake. The only thing I had to do was purchase a conversion tube for my daughter's bike as it is of the modern kids style that has a large frame tube.

Great rack, easy to install., July 3, 2008
By rcarty (Washington, DC United States)

I recently bought this rack to fit on our 2004 Toyota RAV-4. It installs pretty easily - you have to take the spare tire off to mount it, and the first install can take up to 45 minutes when fiddling with the spare. But I especially like that I can keep the mounting hardware connected and still replace the tire cover. That way each time we travel we only need to slip off the tire cover and attach the main rack (what you see in the photo).
The bikes secure like a sandwich - the top piece which secures the bike frames to the rack comes with two securing bolts, one of which is lockable (key included). Which is nice if you want to stop for something to eat (or some other errand) on the way back from your ride.
The bikes felt very secure during our drive on the highway.

Easy to install!, October 15, 2007
By Bibliophile (Saline, MI USA)

We own a 2006 Jeep Liberty and purchased this rack since many others appear to not work with our vehicle. It arrived quickly and is highly durable. There were only slight modifications we had to make for this to work well. Initially, the tire didn't fit over the main square section, which mounts behind the spare tire. With a little filing, it slid right on. (This may be more an issue of the hubcap on our spare than the sizing of the mount.)
Initially, we screwed everything together and there was some slop. Reading reviews on the Surco website, we saw that some had to use 'shims' to get it to hold tight. We went and bought a couple washers. Put the washers on the main threader, thread it up, and it's very secure! We've gone out with this several times and it hasn't given us a problem yet. The threader has a drilled hole, so you can lock the entire system to your vehicle, which is nice. We've been carrying two mountain bikes without any problems on this. We haven't tried to put a 3rd on there yet, but it looks like it would easily fit.

very nice, August 9, 2008

put this on my 2000 toyota rav4. work greats. it is very solid. great design. the rack is two pieces: one that stays on the rav4 all the time and the other that screws on very quickly to the permanent part so when you are not carrying bikes you can quickly remove the rack portion and put the tire cover back on...very clever. this is an industrial strength rack. it is worth the money.

I bought this for my 2005 Toyota RAV4. Like the other reviewers stated, this is easy to install. It is solid, and I love the fact that there is a key to lock the top bar down. When the weather turns bad it will be easy to remove post and put the tire cover back on. Two thumbs up!

GREAT SOLID & SECURE BIKE RACK, May 30, 2010
By LiliMac (Beaverton OR)
|
|
We sought a spare tire bike rack to use with our '05 Honda CRV and this rack fits the bill par excellence! This rack works great. It's solid, easy to install, and includes lock-down security which is a real plus. The rear gate also readily opens and closes when bikes are on the rack.
Security is two-fold: 1) the bike rack itself can be locked down (using the padlock of your choice - we use a secure, hard-to-cut padlock) and 2) the bikes can be locked onto the rack with the supplied locking bolt. (Only 1 key is included for the locking bolt, which I thought was an error so called Surco who'll send a spare at $5 each; we opted to get a 2nd one made through a locksmith - which also cost $5.)
This rack installed with no problem and is SOLID -- the bikes don't budge once tightened down into the rubber-padded wedges between two plates. While the two bolts do take a while to fully tighten or loosen to remove the top plate - it's also possible (if only 1 or 2 bikes are on the rack) to just loosen the bolts enough to slip the bike frame to or from the inner or outer wedges, and lift the bike through and off of the bike rack.
I also like that the rack is easy to remove while keeping the rack plate bolted behind the tire AND the spare tire cover fits (without having to remove that plate bolted behind tire).
Lastly, because CRV spare tire is off-center, when loading 2 or 3 large bikes, one or two may extend past the side of the car a bit, but that hasn't been a problem (other than maybe causing some drag, but not bad). Most important is that the bikes are SOLID and SECURE. We highly recommend this bike rack.

Doesn't work for 2010 Rav 4, April 30, 2010

This rack isn't compatible with the spare tire system for the 2010 Rav 4 unless you saw down the extra lip. I am returning this for the Yakima Spare Time which is supposed to work. Seems like a nice rack though. Very sturdy.

Great on Mom's RAV4, June 24, 2009
By M. McClain
|
|
Mom wanted an east bike rack on her RAV4 to carry her bike and the grandkids (5 and 6 years old).
Mom is very short, at 5'3" so this unti was perfect. Easy to bolt on her 2001 RAV4, easy to use, and comes off easily for the winter. Definitely well worth the money.
The only problem I could see is with nicer frames you might have an issue with bikes swinging fore and aft. WIth the kids bikes, it is no big deal, but a good bungee cable is likely needed to avoid friction at the mounting point.

won't fit ANY spare, August 7, 2010
By big spare tire
|
|
This carrier will NOT fit any spare as delivered. I have a 2008 wrangler with upgraded 12 inch tires and the coupler on the backing plate is about 2 inches short for a 12 inch tire. However, I called the company and explained the problem and they custom made me an extension piece at no charge. So for all of you with small SUV's and sissy tires, this bike carrier will fit perfectly, for those of us with off-road tires, just call the company and get the extender.

Nice rack!, April 25, 2010
By Kman
|
|
This is my second Surco Spare Tire rack - had a Jeep about 10 years ago and loved the one I bought then. Now I have another Wrangler and just got a new BT300. Both were excellent. The pros:
- solid and secure - no jiggling or shaking like the ones that insert into the hitch and are not snug.
- can fit 3 bikes
- has locking mechanism
- no worries about getting in the way of the tailgate opening
Cons:
- the screw-down mechanism for securing the bikes is not as quick as a strap-down model - but there's a real sense of security with this mechanism
- my first one had a little rust, we'll see how this one fares.
All in all, I think this is the best set-up for folks with spare-tires on the back.

Spire Tire Bike Rack is Excellent!, October 23, 2009

Installed product on my 2006 Jeep Liberty w/o any problems. Unlike others on the reviews I read I did not require any sort of a shem - I experienced no problems w/the product at all & actually drove over 2000 miles w/my bike on it after installing & it was terrific! Not to mention there was no worry of leaving it on the rack at night while in hotels & not having to worry that someone would be able to steal it since it came w/the locking screw cap. Love it & highly recommend it!

Good rack. Serves the purpose, June 29, 2009
By A. Crane
|
|
Just used the rack this weekend for the first time on a Suzuki xl-7 SUV. The goods... it's relatively quick and easy to mount (after initially putting the support plate behind the spare tire; it's easy to attach the bikes; it's well made; and you can get into the back of the car without removing it.
The not so goods, but not bads: The bolts that are used to hold the top rack over the bikes are very long and take a long time to thread down. They need to be this long to accommodate fat center tubes, though. The bolt that attaches the rack to the plate behind the spare tire rubs up against the vertical tube of the rack making it very difficult to attach the rack tightly. I actually used a hammer to get the last few turns in to get in tight; if you have bikes with low, slanting top tubes you will have to buy adapters which cost about $20 each.
Minor points when you consider the expense of adding a trailer hitch to use a hitch mounted rack, the inconvenience of using a rack that straps to the back of the car, or face the prospect of lifing the bikes onto a roof rack.
I had bought the Allen 3 bike rack and had to return it because it very clearly stated on the box that it didn't work on Suzuki XL-7, but that warning was not in the description of the product.

The bike rack looks great, however it did not work on my 2006 Rav4. I read a number of reviews before I purchased, and it looked promising. However, the holes in the mounting plate were not close to the bolts on my spare. I needed to return it...and leave my bikes at home.

I have a 2004 Honda CR-V. Fits great. Easy to install. Had to get a adapter for my bike. Opening on bike is not big enough to fit over rack. Pain in the butt to unscrew top securing nobs though. I really like that I can lock the bikes and lock the rack separately. Also nice to beable to remove the rack without having to remove the plate. Very happy with it.

I likes..., May 17, 2010
By Sometime Shopper (Florida)

Bought this for my 2008 Jeep Wrangler since I don't have a hitch or hitch port. This item mounts easily and is very easy to use. My only gripe is the threaded bolts are long so it takes awhile to open/close. I like that the rack locks and I don't have to worry about theft. I had to buy the female bike adapters which was a pain but oh well. Over all, I like this rack.

Works great but requires modification for 2007 Rav4, September 12, 2010
By RandyT
|
|
The mount does not work for a 2007 Rav4 without additional an modification. I called Surco to see if they manufactured an adaptor plate or had a recommendation; they did not. I then took a hacksaw and removed the support lip on the Rav4 spare tire mount that the tire rest on. This took 15 minutes. The 3 bolts for the spare tire are enough to hold the tire on. The Surco adaptor plate then fit over the 3 bolts and were secured. The bike rack itself keeps the bikes secure during travel and the security lock allows you to leave the vehicle with the bikes secured.

Surco BT300 Spare Tire Mount Bike Rack, August 14, 2010
By MyHat1 (Kansas City)

I purchased this rack for a trip to the Smokey Mountains. I was able to install it with ease. It is solid! No jiggle; no wiggle. We drove at highway speeds, through the mountains, and negotiated 14 gas stations all while it was back there doing its job. Besides it being solid, it is also very nice that it does not hinder me as I get in and out of the back of the car. For that reason alone, it is better than a hitch rack. 5 stars!

Fits great for Jeep wrangler 07, July 9, 2009
By S. Paulk-McGinley
|
|
Bought this for our 07 Wrangler. When installing it the plate that goes behind the spare seemed to sit a bit free for my liking, put the spare back on and bolt up and it is snug and had no movement.
We had a little issue where the weld holding the nut to lock in the main bike frame has a little spill over but with a little working the main frame slid on correctly, sits snug and holds the bikes great. there is almost no movement and best of all the rack is lockable to the vehicle and lockable to hold the bikes in.
Very satisfied customer and would recomend to any wrangler owner out there.

PRODUCT NOT TESTED!!!, August 17, 2010
By EAA (Hayward, CA)
|
|
I got excited when i received this product so I immediately installed the mounting plate at the back of my 2002 RAV4 on the eve of our biking activity. The mounting plate installation took more or less 20 mins since I don't have an assistant in putting back the spare tire. On the day of our trip, I tried to connect the main rack into the mounting piece. To my surprise/horror, the mounting piece connected to the spare tire end doesn't fit to the main rack. The size is bit bigger and cannot go to the hole on the main rack without exerting to much force on it. After several attempts on pushing the main rack, it went through a bit. In this case, i tried to detached it again because not doing so will be hard for me to eventually separate the two items when I finally assemble the rack. I did this for couple of times until the main rack went into the middle of the mounting piece's lenght. This is the only time I decided to place the 2 bikes and secure everything. When I put the secure lock on the main rack, i noticed that the main rack is pushing backward until you properly secure it through the rotating bolt. I thought then that I will be having hard time later on to remove the two pieces again. True enough, it takes an eternity to separate the main rack to the mounting piece. During this time, I wondered how this A..HOLES from the manufacturing company tested their product before sending it for packaging. Based on the past reviews, installation should be easy as ABC.

Excellent, Sturdy Bike Rack for 1999 Honda CR-V - Adaptations Needed for Ladies' Bikes, March 22, 2012
By peekabooca (Studio City, CA USA)
|
|
In spite of the wonderfully easy installation, I had some initial challenges with this bike rack that I was able to overcome with the help of a friend and my neighborhood bike shop. The first challenge was the locking mechanism on the top plate of the rack. It is not intuitive, and if you've never experienced this kind of lock before, you might think the lock is broken. Turning the key counter-clockwise actually locks the rack into place. When it's locked, the hand bolt spins around freely. When you turn the key clockwise, it unlocks the bolt, and then it feels secure in your hand. The threads will engage and you can then tighten/loosen the bolt. The second challenge I had was placing my ladies' bike on the rack. There just wasn't enough clearance under the bar of my bike to mount it on the rack without scratching the paint. I went to my neighborhood bike shop and spent $40 on a "bike adapter" (searchable on Amazon.com and available for less $$!) that essentially adds a men's straight bar across the top of my bike, attaching to the handlebar post and to the post under the seat. I just purchased four Velcro straps on Amazon.com ($8), because the bike adapter allows the bike to sway front to back, and I'm concerned the bike will bump into my car if I have to slam on the brakes. Also, when other customers reviews' state that they can still get the spare tire cover over the tire when the bike rack is on, they're only talking about the post part of the rack. When the full arm is attached, you have to remove the spare tire cover to make it work.
The one-page instruction sheet that came with the bike rack was pretty limited. It would help if the manufacturer added some info regarding the issues I had. I'm sure others have had the same challenges. Overall, it's a good, sturdy bike rack--when you have a little extra help.

Won't fit on 2007 RAV4, March 21, 2012

Simple to use, works great., March 15, 2012
By Big Joe
|
|
I received this by request as a birthday gift and have not been disappointed at all. Installing the plate behind the spare tire was a snap and when the main post is not in, my soft cover still fits.
I've had three bikes on it with little trouble. One thing of note is that if you are going carry multiple bikes, be sure the frames are made of similar sized pieces. The only issue I've had is when I had two road bikes (skinny tubes) and one mountain bike (Big fat, thick frame). Because the holding plate could not be anywhere near level, the bike in the middle was not clamped down and could only just hang there. All road bikes, no problem. All similarly sized mountain bikes, no problem. Just don't do both extremes at the same time.
My only (extremely minor) complaint is that the bolts in the holding plate and the main post are really long. Now, I'm sure science says they need to be this long to hold all the different kinds of bikes or to provide the right torque or whatever, but sometimes cranking that thing down takes a real long time.

Bike rack for Jeep Wrangler, February 13, 2012

I recently bought this bike rack for a Jeep Wrangler. Installation was very easy. The bike rack is super sturdy. The only challenge with this product, is getting three full size mountain bikes on the rack at once. It can be done, but is a tight fit. Otherwise, it is perfect, and I would definately recommend this product.

Perfect fit for 2006 Honda CRV, August 4, 2011
By PGD
|
|
Bought this for a 100 mile trip down to the beach. Assembly was relatively easy and quick. You have to take spare tire off and put a bracket behind, but it is not difficult. You only have to do that the very first time you use the rack as the cover can go back over when you are done.
Fit two beach cruisers and my road bike without any problem. They suggest you use a lock to hold the mounting bar to the frame. Probably overly protective but I did it anyway. Bikes were secure the entire way down, easy to offload and felt solid the whole time.
Great feature that also enables you to also lock the clamping plate down, so you can leave the bikes unattended yet secure. Access to the swing door to the back is unaffected, which is just awesome. Highly recommended.

I bought this as a gift, once it was installed we realized that no keys were included which means we can't lock the bikes to the rack. That was a disappointing because the description of the bike rack stated that keys were included. I saw another review stating that their kit arrived with no keys as well. Not sure what to do about that.

Works great - 2000 Honda CRV, July 1, 2011
By Steven Bochenek
|
|
Needed a two bike rack for my Honda 2000 CRV. This works fine. To install, remove the tire, mount the plate, then replace the tire. The plate stays on the car and fits under the tire cover as if it were not there. To attach the rack, remove the tire cover and attach the rack pole to the plate. The rack can be secured to the car with a user provided pad lock.
There are channels for 3 bike frames. I doubt you could fit 3 bikes, but 2 bikes work fine. The channels have padding to protect the bikes and prevent swaying. To secure the bikes to the rack you must turn the cranks on the top. These have fine threads, so you have to turn a lot. Once you have it setup, you can unscrew a little and get the bike out. So the amount of turning can be minimized. The bikes are locked to the frame with an inluded key. The key prevents the top handle from being loosened so the bikes can cannot be slipped out.
Four out of 5 stars. Minus 1/2 star for not having a quick tightening feature for the top plate (bikes to rack). Minus 1/2 star for not including a matching lockset (pole to car mounting plate); and only including 1 key for the top plate.

I saw a competitor's(well known trailer hitch company) spare tire mount bike rack and was unable to find it. The Surco works great on our CR-V. Easy to install, fastens securely to the spare tire wheel, and holds the bikes solidly. Much cheaper than getting a trailer hitch installed for hauling bikes. No contact with the vehicle paint because there are no hooks and straps. Perfect!

Very good bike rack, October 19, 2009
By J. LaRosa
|
|
Just got back from our first trip with this and have to give it five stars. We've got a 2002 CRV, and mounting the rack couldn't have been easier. The bikes were secure, stable and undamaged. The added bonus with our CRV was still being able to open the rear door! The only negative was that our gas mileage suffered by about 5%, apparently from the air drag. Another couple we vacationed with also brought their bikes, but they had one of those racks with straps holding it on, and it was a big production taking off and putting on. Our rack was off the car in about 2 minutes after unloading the bikes, and back on in about the same time when coming home. Highly recommended if your car has a rear-mount spare.

Surco BT300, September 16, 2009
By Paul M. (Manitowoc WI)

The Spare Tire Mount Bike Rack seems durable and holds our two bikes satisfactory. Keeps them sufficiently and firmly in position and far enough apart so they don't rub or scratch against each other - with three bikes, I assume that they would be too close. The double bolt lock downs seem excessivly long and tedious to install.

I like the rack but when buying it the reveiw I read said it wouldn't fit a 2010 Rav4. I Looked but didn't see any earlier years so I bought it. Of course it didn't fit my 2006. This is a great rack! esp. for a JEEP, November 7, 2011
By 2rainy2kayak
|
|
This bike rack is awesome. I have it attached to the back of my 2011 Jeep Wrangler. It works great with three bike and with one. I needed this rack so I could carry my kayaks on the roof, this makes it possible for me to attach a trailer to the hitch, carry my bikes and my kayaks. There is no lock included in this package, except for the one on top that keeps the bikes from being taken, but the lock that keeps the rack attached to the car you have to buy. I do a lot of adventure racing and I can't wait to put this to real use. It beats the roofrack I had for the bikes, before I had to lift the bike really high without a lot of stability. If the roof had been lower, I could have done it, but this is the best answer to what I needed. I recommend it!

Great Bike Rack, October 24, 2011
By tjyork

We've had this bike rack for about a month now and it works great. It was easy to install and once mounted both our bikes (we own 2) fit snuggly and securely with no wobble or movement. The mounting arm comes off easily and the spare tire cover fits over the bracket. Some reviewers with vehicles like the RAV4 that have hard spare tire covers had problems getting them to fit, however, ours is a soft cover and fits fine. I'd definitely recommend this bike rack to anyone with the right vehicle.

Not for Toyota RAV 4, October 9, 2011

Found this rack in a search for 2-bike racks for spare tie mount on a RAV 4 (2010). Unfortunately, the RAV 4 has a flange within the mounting bolt pattern for the spare tire which prevents the mounting bracket from sitting flush as it must to work. Went to Thule instead, where there is a rack that has been modified to accomodate the flange.

great bike rack, September 29, 2011

Bought this rack for our Honda CRV. It was easy to install, and we can cover the wheel when not using the rack. The rack is high enough that there are no worries about hitting other cars when parking, so it is also safe to keep the whole rack in place, even when not using the bikes.
I would recommend this rack.

After 3 years..., September 14, 2011

....this is still doing its job, in pretty good shape except for a little bit of fixable peeling paint. I had had a Thule rack which was too large for my cross bar and ended up ruining my bike's paint when I put the bike on. The Surco fits all our bikes, whether small ladies, full-sized man's or child's. One of these days I'll have to remember to put a bright tennis ball on one of the knobs, because the rack doesn't show up that well and the local gas jockey walked right into it, doing a number on his face.

Met all my expectations, July 12, 2011

I needed a rack that was very secure, lockable, easy to attach and remove, allowed me to open the back of my Disco while bikes were mounted AND reasonably priced. All my expectations were met!

Awesome product, does not fit all vehicles., January 20, 2012

This product does not fit all applications. The product does not fit on the Hummer H2 SUT what so ever. That said the product was made of quality parts and very hefty. I will be returning this product and purchasing the BR400.
