Pyrex is NOT Pyrex now, August 5, 2007
By MockSwede (Brewer, Maine USA)
|
|
Posted elsewhere and added here for others:
New measuring cups are heavier because it's NOT PYREX anymore! After 1998, when Corning Glass stopped making Pyrex. (Think fiberoptics and bankruptcy, etc.) They sold off their 'household' glassmaking and it reformed as World Kitchen. PYREX is borosilicate glass and very resistant to wear and chip and cracking due to exposure to heat or quick changes in temperature. This is why Pyrex and Kimax other borosilicate glasses are used for chemistry glassware. (Timex was to watches as these were to chemlabware! Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'!) Corning has licensed the name of 'Pyrex' to World Kitchen, but nothing else about it is 'corning glass'. (As an aside - Corning made great glass - of all kinds. A world-beater in their day. Management screwed them over going down the wrong economic road. Do check out their lovely glass museum in Corning, NY!) NOW, World Kitchen makes their 'pyrex' measuring cups out of ordinary soda-lime glass (kitchen drinking glass type). This is NOT safe to expose to heat changes!!!! (Think wear safety goggles - like you WERE working in a CHEM LAB!) I suspect that soda-lime glass is denser than borosilicate, but the actual measure wall thickness may be different now than before, and, thus, this accounts for some of the weight difference. If you want my opinion - find 'vintage' Pyrex Measuring Cups somehow and they will last multiple lifetimes. I have one of my mom's and she has two of her mom's measures. My new ones cannot hold a candle to the old ones (30 to 60 years old) and aren't worth a tinker's damn. Happy times in the kitchen!

BEWARE: new Pyrex EXPLODES., August 27, 2008
By finister
|
|
Pyrex is NO LONGER BOROSILICATE. The new stuff will crack and break, as multiple reviewers have noted; nor are the Catamount borosilicate products a good substitute, since they shatter easily due to their thinness.
Luminarc still makes their stuff out of thick borosilicate. It's the only viable replacement for traditional Pyrex to date.
If you're interested, look up the Pyrex scandal. The nutshell version is that in 1998 Corning spun off the Pyrex brand to World Kitchen and other companies, who now use soda-lime glass. Injuries and lawsuits have cropped up everywhere.

You may not know what you are missing!, August 29, 2005
By Bruce W. Marold (Bethlehem, PA United States)
|
|
I bought one of these simply because I had to have every piece of kitchen ware I laid my eyes on (at one point) and, while most of my gadgets gathered dust, this little (actually not so little, and that is the point) beauty got used over and over again.
There may not be many times when you need to measure a full two quarts, but when you are measuring 2 cups or 4 cups, then mixing this with some other ingredient(s), the ability to measure and mix in the same container is a great time and dishware saver.
I learned the value of this measuring cup when mine broke and I found myself without one through the height of my baking season.
This is a bit heavier than a corresponding cup in plastic, but you simply cannot clean plastic to the same level of sanitary confidence as you can glass. Therefore, I ordered two to replace my lost heirloom. They are cheap!

Pyrex has gone downhill, May 29, 2008
By Tom (michigan)
|
|
I have seem pyrex that has survived generations, unfortunately something has changed and I have had 3 pieces literally explode, in the oven, on the stove, even just sitting on the stove top after being used. My latest was a 2 quart measure (see additional product photos) I was reheating some coffee, I brought it to a boil accidently but then turned off the stovetop. I poured myself a cup without incident but about 5 minutes later I hear an explosion in the kitchen and find glass and coffee everywhere!
I don't know what is going on at the pyrex plant but I will not be buying anymore of it. Maybe a trip to the antique store is in order?

Pyrex is no more, August 13, 2008
By eat more beans
|
|
It turns out that this mixing bowl is not made by corel, and is not the high quality high temperature glass originally used. Corel sold of it's Pyrex brand to another company called World Kitchen. WK uses common bottle glass for all it's Pyrex line, rather than the 'lab glass' that made pyrex worth buying.
I was forced to purchase a replacement for the 16 year loyal pyrex measuring that finaly broke. It arrived today, complete with defective bubbles and cracks through both the handle and bowl. Return shipping will cost more than the item did to purchase, so I am out of luck.
If you are looking for the quality pyrex that has been used for generations, you are out of luck. It has not been made for a while now.

I use it like a bowl., March 9, 2007
By VPW- Grandma (Oregon)
|
|
This is a great size for mixing batter and such. Just measure liguid first and add other ingredients. You save from dirtying one measure cup. With the handle it makes pouring a breeze. The handle also keeps it steady (vs. a bowl) when mashing potatoes, banana, berries and such. I actually have several with varying large sizes since they are diswasher safe and generally take up less room than a bowl.
I recommend to anyone who likes to cook

poor handle design, not enough measurement granularity, March 8, 2008
By allazar (United States)
|
|
The handle is too short. Even when less than half-full, this cup is uncomfortable to carry. It feels like the handle is slipping out of the hand. This is especially unpleasant and potentially dangerous with a liter or two of boiling hot water. The handle needs to be at least 2cm longer or a be a full loop.
The markings are printed at an angle. It's barely perceptible, but nevertheless noticeable. There should be more markings. You can only measure from 2 cups up in one cup intervals, or from 16oz up in 16 oz intervals (or do some math) or 500ml and up in 250ml intervals. There is plenty of space for more marks.

Pyrex 2-qt Glass Measuring Bowl, March 8, 2006
By EM (New England)
|
|
I bought this bowl so I could easily mix pancake and crepe batter. I have been more than pleased with it. Since it's by Pyrex, it's microwave and dishwasher safe and the handle is great to hold the bowl steady while whisking your ingredients together.

Pyrex is still Pyrex, June 16, 2010
By C. Maw (Salt Lake City, Ut)
|
|
I could only find an anchor 2 quart measure locally and it was heavy and had a closed handle so it was awkward to use. I ordered the Pyrex and it arrived promptly and it is much lighter than others I have tried and the open handle makes it much easier to use.
The reviews about Pyrex being different since he was purchased by World Kitchen are nonsense. A little research and you will find that the formula for Pyrex hasn't changed since the 1940's. Pyrex has been made from tempered soda lime glass for 60 years. Soda lime glass is considerably more resistant to breakage on impact and is comparable to Borosillicate glass as far as resistance to temperature changes. Just goes to show you should take all of those emails your friends send you with a grain of salt.
All glass can be broken, care must be taken to use it properly.

DANGER! Not real Pyrex! Exploding Junk!, November 30, 2009
By Mr. Mom (tennessee)
|
|
This is NOT real Pyrex! It is NOT high-temp glass! It explodes in medium-temp heat! Lucky our 3-year old was not in the kitchen when ours blew up, shattered--it sent glass pieces all over the kitchen. JUNK!!! Should get ZERO stars.

Exploded during first use, October 31, 2009
By Stephen Brown
|
|
We have used Pyrex in the past and been pleased with it. However the first time we used this item, to pour hot tea into it, the cup shattered. Exploded might be a better word since the glass shards shot everywhere. We have an older 1 quart Pyrex cup that we have used for years for this same purpose without problem. As such, I am not inclined to believe that we were using this product improperly. This leaves either a defective individual product or a larger issue with manufacturing or materials. I will likely try a borosilicate glass product in the future. On a positive note, I purchased this product from Amazon and they refunded my money.

No need for review, February 1, 2006

Anyone who knows Pyrex knows its products need no review. I grew up using my mom's pyrex measuring cups, so I didn't hesitate to buy these when I needed some of my own. The prices are always reasonable, and they are the most durable products. I received a gift certificate to Amazon from my brother, and I bought this cup, the 3-pc set and the Black & Decker 3-cup food chopper. I love them!!

Save Those Arm and Hand Muscles, March 8, 2007
By P. Lum (Kona, Hawaii)

I love this 2-quart measuring cup. It's the perfect size for mixing pie fillings and cake batter. It's so much easier to pour from this cup into a pie shell. I have problems with carpal tunnel, and large mixing bowls are just too heavy and cumbersome.

This Measuring Cup by Pyrex is awesome! Love that i can mix cakes, or any other batters in the cup and be able to measure and pour between multiple pans for baking. And at same time is great too for measuring larger quantities of fruit for pies, make and pour pancake batter, waffles so many uses and great investment.

Pyrex is the best!, November 20, 2006
By Valerie Barber (Accokeek, MD USA)

I have been using Pyrex for quite some time and their products have never let me down. I have used this measuring cup for uses such as mixing and pouring pancake batter to straining hot oil for future use. It is sturdy and hard to break even when I dropped it on my kitchen floor! It has held up through the test of time and is still like new!

It is what it is, February 20, 2009
By Snowbird (Missouri)
|
|
I bought this to use as a MIXING bowl. It is perfect for that. Clearly marked and a great size for cake mixes. As to the reviews about pyrexware exploding-I have several baking pieces and have never had a problem with them as long as they are used properly. I would never set pyrex directly on a gas burner. That's just asking for trouble. Neither would I take a hot pan out of the oven and set it on a cold surface.
Amazon, please put the picture of this measuring bowl back up. It was hard to visualize it's size without one.

Pyrex 8 Cup/2 QT for Home Brewing, December 25, 2008
By Jack (Hacienda Heights, CA USA)

Love the 8 cup pyrex for adding water to my 5 gal. cooler mash tun.
Quicker, easier, and more accurate then adding from a pint measuring cup over and over again. Add the grains and you are mashing away to a great all-grain beer.

Large Bowl for Measuring and Mixing, December 10, 2008
By Mom to 2 Boys (The South, USA)
|
|
First let me say, this is not a measuring cup, this is a measuring bowl. It is a very large and convenient size. The bowl is about 7.5 ins across and 5 ins deep. I love it, its great for a variety of measuring, mixing and microwaving.
Glass Pyrex measuring cups and bowls are perfect to measure your ingredients in and then just pop right in the microwave to heat up. The perfect way to make cook'n serve pudding or instant potatoes. The open handle is great to hold onto while mixing and also great to grab while removing hot ingredients out of the microwave. The handle doesn't get hot in the microwave. I have the 1 cup, 2 cup, 4 cup and the 8 cup measuring cups in Pyrex. They are great. I love the durable glass instead of plastic, so no worries about bacteria, odors or chemicals. The markings in red are easy to read too. They are also made in the USA.
Highly recommend. This one is one of my favorites.

Good Product, January 17, 2010
By CWW
|

I don't understand all the comments about boiling coffee on top of a stove and not expecting a bad outcome. Pyrex clearly states that you shouldn't do this. Also, from my chem major days, decades ago, I don't recall using Pyrex measuring glass to boil things on top or stoves.
This measuring cup is great to microwave sauces, puddings, candy, etc. and that is primarily what I use it for. I previously had an Anchor Hocking 8 cup measuring cup that I broke(not on a stove top, but by dropping a jar on it - don't use these things for wash basins!) and got the Pyrex because it was cheaper than the Anchor Hocking 8 cup. The Anchor Hocking design has a better handle and etched measuring lines. The Pyrex has a steeper design so it is slightly less likely to boil over. Also, the measure lines are painted on the Pyrex so they are easier to read but may wash off over time if you use a dishwasher.

A Very Useful Product Not Now Available in the UK, December 16, 2009
By R. S. Walker (Surrey UK)
|
|
This measuring jug was purchased to replace one that had been in use for many years but which, unfortunately, had been broken. The original was purchased in the UK and Pyrex is generally available for some reason this jug is no longer sold here. A replacement was therefore purchased from Amazon in the US for delivery to a contact there who was coming to England for Christmas. It has just arrived and is a perfect replacement. Even "litre" is spelt the way we do! The fact that so much trouble was taken to obtain a replacement demonstrates just how useful this item is. It is used both for measuring and as a mixing bowl. Perhaps Amazon UK should import some from the US where they are made!

This is a perfect size container. Batter bowl? Prep bowl? Pick a winner. My two are SOOO perfect to grab and go! Two fit my "Wave" to heat up broth or water. The handle makes removal from the Micro-wave (use a mitt) a safe project. Spout handy, example filling canning jars. Beats the dipper method.

The Most Useful Thing I Ever Bought, February 8, 2008

I bought this for a chili recipe that requires a lot of liquids. My wife mocked it when I first got it, but now she uses it more than I do. It's a measuring cup but it's big enough to use as a mixing bowl. You can put a lot of ingredients in it and still have room to use a hand blender or mixer. I don't know how we got by without it.

This is one of the handiest kitchen tools I own., August 4, 2007
By Sally C. (Columbia, SC)

This Pyrex cup is great for so many things. I use it to mix up quick breads and brownies, for pancake batter, for handling homemade soups (straining stock, etc.), even as a salad bowl. It's so handy to be able to just grab the handle instead of using two hands, especially when dealing with hot liquids. And I feel that it gets so much cleaner in the dishwasher than plastic would. The glass will chip if you're not careful, but Pyrex is usually pretty tough.

Pyrex IS the same as it's been for the last 60+ years, November 26, 2009
By A Customer (Silver Spring, MD USA)

See the snopes web site for a debunking of the myth that Pyrex is now more subject to breakage than it used to be. Highlights: YES, Pyrex is no longer made by Corning; but NO, the kind of glass did not change after the Pyrex brand was sold---Corning used soda-lime glass for about 60 years before selling the brand.

Loved it 'til it exploded!, November 13, 2011
By Anonymous
|
|
This is a much-used item in my kitchen. The size is great for preparing many recipes. I've used it for jam making, mixing meatloaf, mixing all sorts of batters. I purchased it in 2008, and unfortunately in August of 2011, it exploded in my sink after I had put some wooden-handled knives and odds & ends utensils in it with soap & water. At the time, I had not read or heard of Pyrex exploding, but a few weeks later read in Consumer Reports about others' experiences. It has been replaced and I am hoping the chances of it happening again are nil as I love this item and have found it to be SO useful.
