Good value for occasional use - least expensive hitch carrier of this size, November 10, 2006
By SDP (Duluth, GA)

This hitch carrier will work fine for basic cargo carrying; note the actual product does not include the high side-rails (which are optional). Build quality is okay, but assembly is a chore, and the hitch tube is not as rugged as I would have liked (it has thinner walls than I would have expected). Also the hitch tube is very square (the edges are not well rounded) and will not fit the receiver on one of my vehicles because of the square edges. Test the receiver tube as soon as you get it to make sure it will work for your vehicle before you go to the trouble of assembly. No hitch pin is included.

I did not recieved what was shown in the picture for this ad. I purchased this unit because it had extention rails, when it arrived is when I found out they were not included. It works well, but I sure could use the rails.

Nice cargo option, November 2, 2006
By Mark (North Carolina, USA)

Bought this for a recent trip of about 1000 miles round trip and it performed well. Seems sturdy and went together easily. Be sure you have a decent set of metric wrenches and/or adjustable wrenches to get some muscle into the bolt tightening when assembling it (takes less than an hour). As the other reviewer noted, the rails are sold separately but I actually didn't want them. I paired it with a Highland Rola cargo bag also sold by Amazon, which comes with straps that you can rig to this unit. Although not mentioned anywhere, I was happy to see that a few sets of holes were provided for bolting your license plate to it, as well (you'll need to supply your own bolts/nuts for that).

Carries all, November 23, 2006

I purchased the cargo carrier for camping gear. It's easy to put together and install. You can easily strap your gear onto the platform. There are several accessories that you can purchase to compliment the carrier such as bike racks and storage bins. The reason I didn't give a five star rating is because Lunds customer service gives you no more than lip service.

Works for camping gear & Fire wood, October 9, 2008
By ClayCope (Seattle, WA)

Recently purchased the lund 601010 for carrying camping gear and firewood. I did not purchase the rails for the carrier, but opted for the Rola 59102 cargo bag which I then strapped to the Lund Hitch carrier. I was able to carry enough firewood for 3 nights, and some gear without mud or water touching them. Great combo.

Very Handy, July 17, 2008

Very useful! There's a lot of carrying things you can do with it. There are more eye catching design out there for more money, good for luxury/expensive suv and trucks. What I have seen, this is the most practical basic look. It is easy to assemble. Do not tighten the bolts yet. Some of the holes after you have bolted the first few needs a little effort to align. You won't see the carrier at the drivers position so I attached an orange snow pole marker at the back for visibility and as a guide going in reverse. I have also attached a carrier side bar. The side bar covers the back reflector so I have to buy a pair of silver/red tape reflector. Fine if you don't have a side bar, I wish the reflector was not pre-installed. It is not heavy and you can keep it standing on its side and won't take lot of space, provided you have a side bar or else it needs a good support to stand.
Update: December 15, 2008 (damaged hitch tube)
I am happy with this purchase using it at most to dump our lawn waste: cut tree branches; tree leaves into our county area dump site and in return I bag some free mulch. Did not realized how heavy the mulch must be and bend the hitch tube, I called Lund and was informed that they do not sell parts. I have two options, find square tube and have it holed or buy a new one.

Purchasing this item was a mistake, July 22, 2011
By Szymon (MI, USA)

I purchased the carrier and the bicycle adapter, and three months later I am convinced this was a mistake. My purpose was to use it as a bike rack.
First, the platform is not a one piece design, so the two halves are bolted in the middle, and at least in my item do not fit well. So the two sides look uneven and hand down.
Next, the bike rack adapter didn't hold the bikes firmly in place. I reversed the holder and now it seems a little better, but three adult bikes would never fit in. The bikes need additional straps, only it is unclear where on the car to strap it to. Tying the bikes down to the carrier still makes them top heavy, to I end up pulling a tie from the roof rack to the handle bars.
I noted the faults right away, but felt bad about sending it back and thought I could make it work.

Renay, June 22, 2010

I purchased this with the bicycle attachment. I thought it would be handier than a bike rack to fit in the hitch, with more verstile uses (and cheaper). I used it this weekend to haul my daughter's bicycle to my sister's. It worked out very well. I also had a cooler sitting next to it, which helped hold the bike in place better. I think I'll get some very good use out of it. My only complaint is that I feel that it wiggles a little too much in the hitch, but it is secure and won't come out.

The carrier was exactly what we expected. Very sturdy. We were even able to open the back door on our Sequoia SUV. Does require about an hour to assemble it. Amazed at the fast delivery during holiday time.

LUND CARGO CARRIER, June 7, 2011
By Kevin S. Epps (Bear, DE)
|

I purchased the cargo carrier along with the Lund bike rack. When I received the package, (earlier than expected!) the first thing I noted was the poor condition of the box. My thoughts went immediately to some of the reviews I've read: "missing bolts", "bent frame" etc. I took everything out, inventoried and was pleased to find all bolts present and no bent frame. My next thought went to the difficulty level of putting this together. Honestly, this was one of the simpler things to do. I put it together myself (barely referring to the instructions) in about 30 minutes. I put all the pieces on the tailgate of my truck and got to work. Seriously, 30 minutes. If it takes you longer, than you're doing something wrong.
All I have done with it so far is mount it on the truck. It does fit loose in the receiver hitch. I will figure out what to do about that later, but for now, I'm happy with the product. It seems solid enough. I only plan to put bikes on it, and occassionally firewood. It's mounted on a pickup truck so most of my load will be in the bed anyway. I just wanted somewhere to put bikes when road tripping, with my SoftTopper (softtopper.com), bikes don't quite fit right.
As of right now, I would recommend this product. When I get back from my road trip/backpacking trips/Boy Scout outings, etc at the end of July, I may think different, but for now, two thumbs up on the rack...the bike rack..well that's something different..
UPDATE:
After road tripping from Delaware to the Outer Banks, I have to say that I am very pleased with this product. I did not fix the wigling in the mount but I never heard it, and everything remained secure.

Lund Hitch-Mounted Cargo Carrier-- worth the price, May 20, 2011

Nice. It will work just fine. Some bolts and screws rusted immediately upon install even though we live in the Nevada dessert but should be ok now that I've repainted.

Dual purpose!!!!, April 25, 2011

Great rack for those who need extra cargo space. With the bike rack attachment this cargo carrier turns into a great bike rack. All you need is tie downs to keep them in place. I use 4 - 6ft tie down to keep the bikes from rattling. Don't worry, the cargo carrier/bike rack will wable, but it won't go anywhere!

Lund 601010 cargo carrier, August 23, 2010
By scrubsr4me

I bought the Lund 601010 cargo carrier and bike holders after looking at lots of bike rack options for my GMC Yukon. I liked the flexibility that the cargo carrier gave me, easier loading of bikes and flexibility for carrying other items. Build quality was okay and assembly was pretty easy although I do wish that the 2" square tube was a bit more substantial. The plates for joining the two halves of the carrier were pretty flimsy so I used unistrut across the front and back of the carrier instead to make a very solid connection. I also added a set of $23 Wal-Mart tail lights for better visibility from behind. (The carrier is pre-drilled for tail lights.) The carrier does wobble a bit but that can be tightened up by strapping over the bikes and connecting the ends of the straps to the back sides of the car. The back window visibility is much better than with a hanging bike rack. Buy it!

fits great on my car..., October 6, 2009

Fits nicely on my car, holds bikes (needs attachemnt), cooler, lugage, "junk". I drive a Dodge Caliber and had no problems with driveways or anything like that. It has many attachments to carry anything that your truck can't fit.

good item-hitch to a truck or van, (too low for a car hitch), August 1, 2009
By Laura in BC (Vancouver, BC)

This item works as it should but I have a car and when it is loaded and I drive over a bump or even just into a mall driveway the carrier bumps or scrapes the ground, so it should only be used on a truck or van where the hitch is high above the ground.

Wobbly rack., November 10, 2008
By crudslinger (Atlanta)

The rack doesn't fit tightly into the receiver, so it rocks back and forth around corners. So far I've only carried things I could see through the back window, and although they rocked along with the rack they didn't seem to budge in separately from the rack.

Works, September 15, 2011
By Mike (CA, USA)

This rack does the job but it's nothing to write home about. Amazon's description of a three-star rating pretty much nails it: It's OK. I've carried firewood, coolers, bicycles, etc without problem, so for that it does the trick.
Problems:
- Within a day or two, the hardware started rusting.
- The rack is *very* loose inside the hitch receiver. I use ratchet straps to tighten it up on each side - there's no way it could be used without some sort of method of tightening it.
- I wouldn't trust it with 500lbs! I can't put all of my weight on it without it protesting loudly, and any cargo must be balanced properly (which makes sense anyway). The grating that makes up the floor is pretty weak.
- Note that it doesn't come with a retaining pin for the tongue in the receiver.
In the end, it does the trick, and it's not too expensive. It was one of the few I could find that didn't have a rise on the tongue - I wanted mine to sit below the rear barn doors on my van, so the less rise, the better.

Soooommme Assembly required, August 31, 2011
By DanP
|
|
First, I must say, now that I've assembled the cargo carrier, I love it. Assembly, however was a pain because the screw holes did not quite line up. Maybe 3-4 of them max. I needed to loosly screw the ones that did line up then worked an awl or thin dowel into the others and bend the frame / support bracket till I could get other screws through. At this point some of them are kinda going through sideways, but as I tightened them they worked the support bracket enough to sraighten up.
It works great for hauling mulch, the X-mas tree, gasoline, and all the other stuff which used to dirty the inside of the van. I also recommend the bike attachments if you are handy enough to drill new screw holes for them.

Just alright...poor tolerences, April 17, 2012
By J. Giangrasso (Franklinville, NJ, US)

Better have a drill ready during construction. Some holes do not line up no matter what you try. It fits loosely in the hitch carrier and the bike holder isn't turn key. Have several bungee cords ready. Two adult bikes and one child's bike seems to be the limit.

Cargo carrier, March 21, 2012
By doodady

I rec'd the item within 3 days of ordering which is awesome. The rack is very easy to assemble and appears to be a good buy price wise. The issue is that it comes with extremely poor quality bolts. I stripped 6 out of 12 using a 1/4 in ratchet so I had to buy better quality bolts and nut...not good but not the end of the world!! The holes for the bike rack are too close to the end of the platform therefore the bike's tire sit on the adge of the platform do not fit in it. I had to drill new holes 6 in closer to the center which is not a big deal, it now does the job it is supposed to. The instructions come in 3 different languages, the French version was done using a translation software and make absolutely no sense it is not understandable. These are only small issues and do not take away the quality of the platform. I made one myself in the past and it cost me almost the same amount in material on top of all the work and time I spent building it...so price wise it is a good deal.
