3.0 out of 5 stars.  Sturdy Product, Misleading Photo, August 28, 2007
By E. Cappuccio
Overall, the product appears to be well built and sturdy. It took about an hour to assemble by myself. With help, it could easily be done in less than an hour. My only complaint is that the photo is misleading in two respects. First, it does not come with side rails. Fortunately, I read an earlier review which noted that fact and was not surprised when it did not come with the side rails. Second, the photos make it appear as if the carrier sits close to the bumper of your vehicle. That is not the case. In fact, this carrier sits out about twenty inches from the bumper of your vehicle. My guess is that it has to do with the hinge that allows the carrier to fold up. In any event, if I had any idea that it stuck out that far, I would have opted for the non-folding variety. But, other than that, the product appears to be sturdy and suitable for its purpose.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Folding option makes it worthwhile and convenient, May 21, 2008
By Looking for deals (Connecticut, USA)
I really think this product is a great idea. The folding carrier makes it great to bring a load of cargo somewhere, dump it, and fold up and not have to worry about backing up into something later on. I am using it on a Dodge Grand Caravan, and sometimes you have to watch out it doesn't scrape on the ground because the hitch on my van is mounted low. If this were used on a pick-up truck or SUV it would probably have pleanty of clearance all of the time. I also cut two pieces of 1/4" plywood to use as inserts in the carrier over the metal mesh support. This gives me a solid support on the angle iron sides, and more confidence that I will not break the metal mesh by accident. I know that if the mesh were solid, I probably could not lift the carrier by myself. I like it!!! It does stick out far from the back of my van, but I can open the back door, and then stand in the space and have access to that cargo space in the van. I would also suggest a locking hitch pin to keep this from coming out of the hitch. I had a hitch installed specifically for the carrier, and neither came with a hitch pin!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Item not as pictured, June 8, 2007
By D. Cryer
The picture used for this Lund Cargo Carrier is misleading. It shows an optional Side Bar Attachment that is not included. Only way down in the description is there any clarity about this shortcoming where it lists optional accessories (Side Bars)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  nicely made product, January 17, 2007
By Heather (Pittsburgh PA)
I bought this product as a Christmas present for my boyfriend. Cargo hitches are rather expensive, but Amazon had a special running plus free shipping, which came in handy since the box weighed 50lbs! It is easy to assemble, with nice and sturdy constuction. The fold up option is great. Only drawback is that when it's down, it sticks out really far, which isn't a good thing when it's on a Full size F-250 with an extended cab and a long bed. But other than that, it's a great product and i'd tell anyone that's looking for this kind of item to pick one up. Just wait till shipping is free!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Outstanding Product!!!, November 5, 2009
By jammer (USA)
I purchased this item for my Jeep Grand Cherokee. As a sportsman, this product has helped me bring home the bacon AND the venison without them riding inside with me! I LOVE the folding feature. It really helps with the parking and gives another layer of security for the back hatch. The way the hinge is constructed you do not lose 2 inches off your hitch height/ground clearance (as in some knockoff folding carriers). The metal mesh is VERY strong and sturdy, yet enables law enforcement to view your tag and taillights(so you don't get a citation for obstructing their view or cause an accident b/c someone can't see your brake lights. Assembly is very easy. Took me less than 30 minutes by myself. I highly recommend this product for any sportsman currently using an SUV (Grand Cherokee, wrangler, tahoe, rodeo, blazer, explorer, expedition just to mention a few). Get the 60in version--you will be glad you did! THE EXTENDED RAILS IN THE PICTURE ARE AN OPTION--personally I am glad it did not come with it. I would have taken them off anyway. I do recommend getting two locking hitch pins, one for your receiver and one for the hinge portion (just helps keep the honest people honest out there) Bottom line--This is an OUTSTANDING PRODUCT! Kudos to Lund for their design and to Amazon for their great deals!!! Thank you for your time. ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice and sturdy cargo carrier, December 17, 2009
By K. Turner (Kentucky)
This is a sturdy cargo carrier that adds a lot of space in your vehicle. I have a Pontiac Torrent with a UHaul hitch. The carrier fit great. Assembly went well, and the carrier held all my luggage plus some other items so a decent weight. As in other reviews, the carrier does stick out from the back of your vehicle however this allows room for you to access your back hatch/gate. Even though it sticks out in the back, I could not see it in my mirrors. When I arrived I just folded up the carrier and it didn't stick out much at all, so no worries when backing. I was supprised how quite this carrier is. No ratteling in either position. I think it would be a good idea to buy two hitch locks though. One for the hitch and one for locking the carrier when it is in the up position. It comes with a pin but if your at a hotel you never know what people will take. I strongly recommend this cargo carrier.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not worth the money, June 3, 2010
By Robert L. Oaks
This product was easily assembled. It seemed very sturdy. Because I have my spare tire on the rear door of my Jeep Liberty, the folding mechanism is useless to me unless I take off the spare,( not going to happen ). Also, because of the spare, I have to use the folding mechanism in order for my cargo, of more than 18" in height,to clear the spare. The product discription tells of a 500lb. evenly distributed weight capacity. I had 15 - 30lb. bags of lava rock,( totalling 450lbs. ), on the cargo carier and strapped down with the cargo net, which I purchased after I received the carrier and saw that the rails shown in the picture are an option. I had 8 miles to travel to get this load to my home. One mile from my home, the carrier was dragging the ground. I pulled over to see that the tounge was bent. I drove the final mile at 5MPH to get home without too much damage.
I had to bend it back into place and reinforce it before I could use it again. NOW, it's perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  a great investment!, February 1, 2011
By mnhasanny
First of all, the vehicle that I used this folding cargo carrier for is a 2007 Jeep Wrangler 4-door, meaning that there is a rear-mounted spare tire. In addition, all my wheels including the spare are rather large at 305/55/20 (33 inches in height). I also had a regular hitch that I installed separately (it was a normal hitch... nothing special like "long neck" or anything like that). Therefore, before I purchased this folding carrier, I was concerned if I would be able to actually fold it up all the way.

To my surprise, I was! I was barely able to lock it in place with the carrier's standard size pin (which is 5/8"), but the carrier does press slightly against the tire when folded up. In other words, if you had bigger wheels than mine, you would not be able to fold the carrier. HOWEVER, you can substitute the 5/8" pin with a 1/2" or smaller in diameter, and maybe you can make it work. If you're wondering why, observe the pivot point of the carrier and you can figure it out by its design.

For the part of the carrier that hooks up with the hitch, there are 4 holes to lock in the hitch pin, so you adjust how far out you want the carrier to be. For my Jeep, I have to extend it all the way out if I want to fold it up.

Now to talk about how strong and sturdy this carrier is when loaded, my experience can emphasize it very well: A roadtrip from New York City, all the way down to Key West, Florida and back--a trip that totaled 4,000 miles! And through it all, there was no problems with the carrier, which probably had about 100 to 150 pounds of cargo on it. It was able to handle some messed up roads in New York, the sand on Daytona Beach, some long stretches of high speed driving/cutting, and even some random stupidity. In fact, it was so easy to forget that the carrier was there. No noticeable rattling while driving (it shifts a little). At the beginning, we kept on reminding ourselves to peek back behind the Jeep to make sure our stuff was still there until we got comfortable.

I bought the 60inch carrier from Lund and I would recommend this length. I also bought and used in the roadtrip a cargo bag designed for this carrier, also by Lund--very recommended as well. This cargo bag is the best thing to keep all your items secured on the the carrier, so a must buy.

Altogether, this was a great investment!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Cargo Carrier, December 16, 2008
By Red man (Hazleton, PA)
The cargo carrier was excellent quality, however there were times where some holes did not line up perfectly. All in all the carrier was very much worth what I paid for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Cargo hitch, November 4, 2008
By Q. Alleyne
I recently bought this cargo hitch and I have been very pleased with it's performance. It was slightly difficult to put together and maybe I did something wrong but I have been unable to fold it up as described.
It is a sturdy cargo hitch overall!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Product Not Well Built, June 28, 2011
By Bruce
We bought the Lund Folding Cargo Carrier in December 2009. We took it on several trips carrying mostly luggage but really wanted it to attach to the back of our travel trailer. We took it on a long camping trip (2 months) during the summer of 2010. It did not fare well. Midway through the trip, we noticed several bolts and nuts were working lose. I had properly tightened them but we replaced both the nuts and the washers. That problem solved. By the end of the trip, the hitch shank began to bend. It was like it was moving up and down within the hitch mount. The shank metal appears to be too thin for the minimal amount of weight on the carrier. At no point had the weight on the carrier exceeded 250 lbs. Overall not a good long term investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Gets the job done, October 4, 2010
By Wormtown
The kit is somewhat heavy to assemble alone but I managed. Some pieces did not line up perfectly but it all went together fairly easily with a ratchet set and a crescent wrench. Once assembled I installed it on a 2004 Honda Pilot with a Draw Tite Trailer Hitch (Part # 75599). I could fold up the cargo carrier without any problems; it clears the bumper easily. I did not notice any noise or rattles with it empty or loaded with cargo. The perimeter of the frame has pre-punched holes so cargo can be secured with cords/straps. I've used it once to haul camping gear and it did a fine job.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good product, but not for a lower riding car..., August 28, 2010
By Bryan M Wiederspohn
Just a note to those out there...this is a good product, so I don't want to diss that, it's solid, goes together well, folds up well but I wouldn't:

But it if you need to add a hitch converter...that means you have a 1.25 " hitch and you have to buy the 2.0 hitch converter. When you do that your car is probably too low to the ground and it will both stick out too far and ride too low...mine ended up scrapping the ground a bitch and I had to leave on vacation.

If you have a car or a smaller stationwagon like mine (I have a chevy HHR) then buy a smaller one that angles the hitch up so it gets away from the ground.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Does not fit a Pontiac Torrent '06, August 16, 2010
By Alondra
I bought this for a long trip with my family but was extremely disapponted to find that it did not fit my Torrent's hitch despite the advise of the seller's parts service person. Since I was in a bind for time, I bought an attachment that would allow this carrier to fit my hitch but 100 miles into the trip the hitch was scrapping the ground since the adaptor made the hitch sit way too far back from the car. I had not put much weight on it yet it was not the right thing for my car. If you have a Pontiac Torrent do not buy this item as it will not fit your 2' hitch.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Sturdy but very poor assembly instructions, July 3, 2010
By cramernj
The package arrived completely destroyed but fortunately nothing was damaged. The instructions were horrible. I've assembled a lot of items over the last 40 years and this by far was the worse when it came to instructions that I've ever seen. The company's website is also a joke. Very difficult to navigate and it wouldn't let me download instructions on line. There were a couple of screws/washers missing and I needed my son to help me out as it's tough to tighten the bolts on your own. I broke one bolt because I overtightened so be careful. It doesn't have to be tightened as much as you think because it has lock washers. They should include a few extra screws, washers, etc. like some other manufacturers do. The unit itself seems nice and I can't wait to try it. I got the Lund 60X20 cargo bag and that's very well made...no complaints there. I am a little concerned about the folding unit though. Not sure it's necessary for how I'm going to use it. It does stick out farther from my Tahoe than the illustration in the ad. So overall I like it but make sure you have a Home Depot near by to get missing parts and a 17 year old son who has nothing to do to help you assemble it. Oh, and after searching the Net for the best deal, Amazon by far had the best pricing on this unit and the cargo bag.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A must have, January 18, 2012
By RIA (Newport Beach, CA USA)
I bought this as a Christmas gift and have really enjoyed the use of it so far. The Cargo Carrier is heavy and required two people to install. It frees up a lot of space in the vehicle. Downside is not being able to see it while in the vehicle. You have to remember the Carrier is onboard when backing up to avoid a disaster. Very sturdy and supplies ample room for our varies activities.
