5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great - works for my bigger kitty just fine., December 29, 2005
By kfh (Seattle, WA USA)
We have been using this for about 2 months now. My kitty is about 15 pounds, so this supposed to be the wrong size for him. But I knew that cats can squeeze in and out of almost everything, and I prefer the smaller hole.

The quality seems just fine for the in-basement-window-pane use that we have. I'm not sure this is the one I would pick to put in a valuable thick door, but I can't say exactly why not.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Basic Cat Door Satisfies Owner and Cat Alike, August 29, 2008
By Jason Covert (Brooklyn, NY)
The installation of this was a little bit of a nail-biter... I mean, you are cutting a hole in a door, and in this case, my bedroom door.

It went smoothly, and installed in under 30 minutes.

My cat is not a true fatty, but on the husky side, weighing in at 15lbs, but he fits through this door without a problem - sometimes at a full gallop, which is kind of crazy to watch. One minute he's there, running at this small hole, and the next... PLOOP!... he's gone.

The one downside is that there is no liner that comes with the kit to seal the interior of the door, which might be an even bigger problem had my door been hollow. I recommend using some black duct tape, or gaffer's tape to just ring the interior cut of the door before finally installing the two frames (one on each side of the door you're cutting into).

This door is basic, and made of plastic, but works as advertised and has already saved us hours of sleep when we would have had to get up to let the cat in or out, as his fickle will dictated at all hours of the night.

I'm a happy customer!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  cats can come and go, August 31, 2007
By Chemical sensitive (Renton, WA)
It went on so easily with the right saw. We installed it on a bedroom door. In the past the cats kept waking my son up to be let in or out. Now he can sleep in peace.

The hard part was getting the cats (6 & 7 years) to accept the flap. The magnet scared them. It took a few days for them to realize that the door wasn't going to grab their tail. I love the freedom that we have now.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  trapped cat, October 12, 2008
By Becca
This door seemed great. I had to work with my cat for a while to train him on pushing the plastic flap, but eventually he got it and it was working well. I use it to connect a window on a closed in porch that has his kitty litter in it, to the kitchen. If I keep the kitty litter in the house, the dog will eat it. After he had fully mastered the system, I then went away overnight. When I returned, I found a very traumatized, upset kitty trapped on my back porch. In his travels back and forth, he had loosened the small piece of plastic that locks the flap. He hadn't been able to return back into the house and to his food and water. I promptly broke off the piece of plastic that allows it to lock; it's simply not a safe product with it.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Flimsy cheap cat door, July 27, 2008
By Jerry (North Carolina)
This cat flap has no weather stripping around the door and the locking mechanism is a sliding piece of plastic that catches on a tiny protrusion on the flap. It is so poorly constructed that the one I ordered arrived with the little piece of plastic broken off (I found it in the box it was shipped in). Thanks to Amazon, they issued me a full refund and I immediately purchased Cat Mate Lockable Flap Cat Door which is a couple dollars more but well worth it. It is weather-stripped and has a sturdy locking mechanism. It is the same type slider lock as the cheaply made one, but it is well designed. Both doors are identical in size and nearly the same in appearance but you will be much better off with the other one.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Even for my fat cat, November 20, 2007
By E. Muse (Texas Hill Country)
I didn't want to spend the extra money for a bigger dog door for my 18 pound, big boned cat so I tried this and it worked for him just fine. I only wish they made it so that the interior plastic edges touched. We put it in a hollow door and there is nothing to cover it. But its inexpensive and works for what I needed it for.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Maybe It's My Cat's Fault, September 8, 2008
By T. Boehnlein (Dayton, Ohio, USA)
She isn't the brightest cat around. The whole reason I got the cat door was so the cat could get out of my bedroom without waking me (she would make a whole bunch of noise at 4AM) but not be able to get back in unless I want her in.

I ended up doing quite a bit of modding to the door to make it quiet. At first, she would just paw at the flap. This would then smack back down and make a ton of noise which defeated the purpose. Now I have the flap smack into padding instead of hard plastic.

It's not a horrible door. It doesn't jam or anything like that.
The side that is not held on by screws did fall off like other people had said. I really don't care though. For reference, I did install it on a hollow door.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works for my kitty!, October 16, 2009
By kittywee (Lorida, FL)
I purchased two of these doors and have installed them both. One in fiberglas mosquito screen and the other in the thin metal kick plate of a screen door. Although this is not designed for screening or thin screen doors, it can easily be modified by cutting out a 1" X 1/4" piece of the housing opposite the magnet. This permits a flush fit between both halves of the cat door, enabling a tight fit through an opening in a mosquito screen or thin kick plate on screen door. The door works well and permits easy passage for cats and presumably small dogs. However, the locking mechanism does not secure the door/flap. The slide mechanism is stiff which is good as the animal can't move it but it is easy to only partially engage the lock. Care must be taken to ensure the slide lock is fully secure. Even when fully secure, it takes very little pressure to push on the bottom corner of the flap and force the lock, same on the return. Our 6 month old kitten weighing in at all of 7 lbs, has no trouble pushing through the flap even after it is securely locked. My modification to permit screen installation has no bearing on the locking mechanism. If you don't need the lock, the door works well but if want to be able to lock animals in or out, this lock is not up to the task.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  BREAKS WITHIN WEEKS, March 15, 2009
By Tintin (New York, NY United States)
Easy to install, small catdoor. Perfect if you only have a small space of wood on the bottom of your door.
BUT: the lock is extremely weak and BREAKS EASILY after using it a few weeks.
It is also very difficult for the lock to grab the little holes; it can take you several minutes to simply try and lock the thing.
Also the smooth flipping disappears after a while and when your kid (cat) walks through it: the door stays open and hardly closes.
I buy many catdoors, but this is the last one I will buy (unless now: I need to replace the broken door for the 3rd time).

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent, low cost cat door, August 26, 2008

I purchased this to install on my laundry room door. For the price, it does its job well. The only thing I wish it had was a interior shield for installing in hollow doors. I had to fabricate my own so my cats wouldnt get snagged.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Product, September 30, 2008
By Andrew J. Erion (Pierre, SD USA)
The installation was fairly quick and easy. I installed 2 in less than 45 minutes. I would have given it 5 stars if the back of the door screwed in like the front. The double sided tape is holding so far, but I'm sure the tape will eventually fail and the back side will fall off.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Basic cat door, November 7, 2009
By S. R. Thrasher
You get what you pay for with this cat door. Amazon's price was cheaper than my local Lowe's.

Fairly tricky to install properly on a hollow utility room door - it took some rigging with plywood on the inside of the door to keep the cats from knocking it right out. However, now that it's been secured it works just fine. The larger of my two cats has run through it full speed and it has remained attached.

If you have a timid cat it may experience apprehension using the door at first because of the loud noises the plastic door makes when banging closed with the help of the magnet.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Looks are deceiving...., July 11, 2008
By emmyz (SW Ohio)
This cat flap looks so small, but our leggy 13 lb tomcat has no problems getting through it. And, while it doesn't appear to be that sturdy, once installed it's rock-solid. A great value, when considering all the local pet stores were charging $50+ for THEIR cat doors!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Doesn't state that it is designed for doors inside the house, December 8, 2009
By Deelee (Washington)
I bought this to replace the one we had, as the flap had cracked. I wanted the same model and size, so it would fit the hole in the door w/o modifications. Picture looked the same, measurements were too, so I ordered it. What the description lacked is that it is not made for doors that lead to the outside. This one has no weather stripping (hair-like brushes) like the old one. So as I write this, we are experiencing a extreme cold snap here in Washington. Cold air is streaming in!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Usable but lacking, October 27, 2011
By amazon (DC, USA)
Its cheap. So cheap they don't even provide a template for cutting the hole in the door. As another reviewer pointed out there is a proble in that there is no 'lip' between the panels that go on either side of a door. So, if you install into a hollow door there is a gap between the two panels. Even if you install into a solid door, you have bare wood visible between the front and back panels.

Update: forgot to mention that only one side has screws to attach to the door. The other side is stuck onto the door. It no longer sticks and has fallen off.

Good basic cat door. Will have to fill in void if used in hollow door. I used Great Stuff spray foam. Let dry overnight and cut excess off next day. Only took cats day or so to use it. Now they go full speed. I put in door going down to the basement and it works very well. Easy to install.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Teaching old cats new tricks, December 28, 2010
By veggiebear (Lowell, MA USA)
We used to keep the cellar door ajar so the cats could get to their litter box, but that meant the kitchen always was drafty. (Cold draft is good for beer, but bad for houses.)

You've got to teach the cats how to use it:

* Cut the hole through the door, but do not install the PetSafe Cat Flap. This lets the cats understand there's a new way to get to the cellar.

* After a few days, put the Cat Flap on the hole. Our cats scratched at it, so we showed them how to push the flap.

* If you have more than one cat, expect to see them playing on each side of the flap. Sometimes it's like Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots Kitties.

It took a couple of days from start to finish, but they figured it out. And the kitchen is a lot less drafty now.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Piece of CARP, April 6, 2009
By Bob Twobears (Indiana, USA)
The latch on this door is very poorly made, even if it would work it is almost impossible to bend over and actually secure it. I ended up having to remove the latching mechanism and screw brackets on either side of the flap so I could use a paint stirring stick as a drop bar.
I am now trying to find a cat door with a simple slide down cover that does not cost $60.
So if you want to buy two doors and install them twice, buy this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  good quality, easy to install, March 13, 2009
By merddyn (Houston, TX, United States)
good quality plastic. Easy install template included. Took me about 20 minutes to install, and i'm not an especially handy person. It even has a set of magnets in the bottom that help to keep it closed if a wind kicks up or something similar. (it still easily opens for pets). We're using it indoors and the magnets cause a bit of noise so I pulled them out. We have a 15 lbs cat and he can get through it w/o a problem. Will be buying another one when we need it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Better than anticipated, February 15, 2008
By S. Hite
This cat door was actually nicer than I anticipated. It was easy to install and is sturdy. The door does not fit so snug that if a cats tail or paw is caught in it that the cat would be harmed or scared. My cat learned to use it very quickly and loves the freedom.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Scary...or my cats just a dingbat., January 31, 2008
By KJC (Portland, or)
This product was easy to install and looks nice. However, my kittens were confused by it at first (as can be expected). I figured they would get used to it, but one of them got his paw stuck in the side of the door (and he's the smart one) and started screaming! I'm not sure if it was because of the magnet or what, but I couldn't get it out for almost a minute, and the whole time he was crying. It was horrible! Still, this doesn't mean it's a bad product-it could just be that my kitten had bad luck. We just removed the plastic flap and they are using it just fine...though this does let some cold air in, but we've covered it with a thick tapestry.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  basic door, April 21, 2011
By Albert L (Near Los Angeles California USA)
this is a basic door.
not too big so if your cat is fat it may have to squeeze through if it can.
it locks or not
it is not like the ones where you can set it to let the cat in but not out or vice versa
why it does not have that useful feature I do not know
its not like the amount of extra plastic would cost much more.
it does not have the fuzzy stuff on the border to help with
quiet or blocking air flow
I have one of those doors also and I do not think
it would matter much in those regards; but if you use a lot of AC or heat you may think otherwise.
if you are putting it though a solid piece of thick wood or a thin piece you should be fine.
if you have a thick hollow door then you may want to find a spacer that is sold somewhere too for looks.
I did not use one and my cat has not complained verbally.
I did notice some cat owners had the little plastic lock lock by itself with use
and caused their cats to be locked out or in.
this can be fixed by removing the lock tab so this is not a threat.
I also read where someone used tape to line the opening of the cut out door before
installing the cat door. Good idea.
also if your cat has a problem learning the cat door one may want to tape it open for awhile
as the open hole will get them started using it.
then let the flap down and hopefully they will figure it out.
note these hard plastic doors can make noise
I noticed some soft flap that may be quieter; appreciated at night time.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works as advertised, August 12, 2010
By Thomas Kouhsari (Washington, DC)
Install on a hollow door was not too bad. You do need to buy something to cover the openings around the hollow door as this flap sits on both sides of the door, but doesn't cover all the way through. Took a few days for my cats to get used to it. My bigger cat is over 11 lbs and I probably wouldn't recommend this size for cats much larger than that.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Who let the cats out?, June 7, 2010
By mauurenaa (Costa Rica)
This little door is great,
You have to have the proper tools to make an easy set up. After only a day the cats were using it with no problems. Make a hole on your door doesn't sound that good, however after you set up the flap the door looks pretty good.
The size is perfect, the dog stick the head once in a while but he can't go any further than that.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Like it but the cat's don't, March 20, 2010
By M. Gohlke (JAMESTOWN, PA, US)
The flap works great. The cats can get into the garage where we relocated their litter box. They don't like it, probably because it closes pretty fast and their tails have been pinched. They have no choice but to accept it though. We were concerned about our chubby girl getting through but she has no trouble at all. Very nice door especially for the price. I shopped around locally at the pet stores before ordering and it is a very good deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Simple but efficient design - no frills though, July 5, 2009
By Life, Art and Technology a.. (New York, NY United States)
Works really well, the flap returns in position quickly thanks to a clever magnet. I installed it in my bathroom door, this contains catbox odors really well and saves on electricity since the A/C doesnt have to fight the open window in the bathroom.
Since most indoor doors are hollow, I had to purchase some white tape to cover the void. Maybe a white plastic felxible ribbon for that purpose (thin enough to be easy to cut to size) would have been nice. But no complaints considering its low price.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  works perfect, March 8, 2009
By sscheeks (New Jersey)
We purchased this flap so that the cats could still get downstairs for the litter box but we could keep the basement door closed. It took my 5 year old cat 5 minutes to adjust and my second cat who is 4 about 2 days to get used to it. They are both big boys (15-17 pounds each) and they have no problem fitting through it. There is a small magnet at the bottom which keeps the flap in place and it has allowed us to keep the door closed which is saving on our cost to heat the house. This is very affordable and works well.

Easily installed by my husband (he used a jigsaw) and our older cat learned to use it within a week. Our cat is pretty good sized, but she fits through it just fine. Aside from her being nervous about using it at first, she has had no problems. It is just plastic which works fine for our cheap garage door but you might want a nicer one for a better door.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  door breaks off, December 31, 2008
By Linda USA (USA)
I purchased one of these and the door broke off -- in the middle of winter! The door couldn't be replaced because the hinges where you'd hang a replacement door had also broken off, so I had to replace the whole thing. Plus, I didn't want to have to resize the hole to try a new brand. I thought it was a fluke and bought another one and the same thing happened. I think maybe the hinges ice up or something when it's cold, and it become brittle and cracks.

After the second one broke, I re-sized the hole, and tried a different brand with a rubberized door, and the rubber on that creased and broke off also after a couple of months.

Not sure now what the best suggestion is for a cat door/cat flap. Hmmmm. I'm just really glad I didn't cut a hole in a door to fit one of these -- I installed it in one of the window panes in my basement window. So if I decide it's not worth the hassle of the door breaking off every 3-6 months, I can always replace the window pane with glass again.

So my advice is to think hard before you cut a hole in your door for this!

Works fine, October 31, 2011
By Todd S. (Carrollton, TX)
This cat flap works fine, and perhaps I let myself get misled by the name, but it's not really a flap at all. The "flap" is a solid piece of plastic that can be locked closed. This was a failure on my part to adequately read the description.

The flap does work fine. It makes a little bit of noise as the cats come in and out, just the sound of the plastic door swinging back and forth. I would have honestly preferred a flexible flap because I was concerned about noise issues. Since I am using it on an interior door, I'm less concerned about locking it.

That said, both of our 10-14 pound cats (10 & 11 years old) used the flap within two days. No problems there at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Value, June 28, 2010
By Alastair Lyon (Florida)
I needed a way for my cat to access her litter box in a closet under the stairs and this cat flap was the cheapest option. It serves its intended purpose and my cat learned to use it quickly. As many other reviews have stated, the lock is garbage (it broke in half within 1 minute of me opening the box), but I don't anticipate ever wanting the ability to lock the door in its current location.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  ...a Caveman can do it!, July 5, 2011
By Jerome C. Donnelly (Chinook, WA)
Great product!. This door is so much more than I expected. It has a little magnet in it to stop the door swinging after my cats go through, helping to keep air drafts at bay. I have LARGE cats and they fit through the door just fine. Also, I installed one in my garage door leading outside and works great; proving this door is not just for the interior of you home.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  small to med cat flap, June 24, 2011
By -david- (Bakersfield, CA)
This product gets five stars because it cost only $11.95 and with a little prep it works very well. This product should not be confused with a cat door that forms a complete unit when installed on a door. This product installs on the onside of the door with a plastic trim for the other side - there is nothing in the middle. Without a middle if you have a hollow door you need to insert something (I'd suggest 3/4 inch pine) into the void between the inside and outside of the door. This insert provides a surface to screw the screws into and gives a more complete look to your cat flap (no gapping hole). Because this flap does not seal around the door I would not install it on an outside door. I used my cat flap on the door between the kitchen and back porch (where the cat box is). It looks and works great and for $11.95 it was money well spent. -david-

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Satisfied, April 30, 2011
By New Mommy (Chicago, IL)
I bought this cat door because my 2 cats have their food, water and litter boxes in the basement and didn't want to continue leaving the basement door open. The installation was super easy. The door itself is a basic cat door with no bells and whistles. Once my cats got used to going through it, they like it. Its also a safe zone for them from my dog. My one cat is near 15 pounds and she easily fits through with no struggle. That was my main concern as she is a pretty large cat. The only complaint I would have is the actual swing door sticks a bit so the cats had a small problem getting through. We took off the swing door and just have the frame of the door on and now it works great. I would recommend it if you are not looking to spend too much.

Good if you are using indoors, also if door is more than 1/2" thick you will need to buy the expander.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Easy to install, March 21, 2011
By T. Cloud (Atlanta, GA)
Does not take much to install, took me about 30-45 minutes. I have a 3 month old kitten who is still getting used to the flap, but works well. We put it in an interior closet door to conceal the litter box. Would highly recommend and is a great price compared to others!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Cat Door...pretty good, March 3, 2011
By Jim Marciano (BROOKHAVEN, PA, US)
Very easy to install, strong enough and the door is big enough for a grown cat but... If you have 6 panel doors this cat door will not fit within a panel or the raised portion of the door. It will be partially in both parts of your door. Also...if you have hollow doors you'll be able to see between the front and back parts of the cat door. The two parts of the cat door that insert into your house door are only a 1/4" wide each so you have a gap of at least an 1 1/2" (depending on thickness of your house door).I manufactured a spacer to incorporate between the two parts of the cat door to hide this. I installed this in my laundry room door so it didn't bother me too much.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very good value, February 12, 2011
By fatima (Orlando, Florida United States)
I purchased this cat flap two years ago, and it still works very well.
It has four stars because for this price, it's an excellent product that works, and stands up well.
I didn't give it five stars because it is a little noisy; it takes some cats a little while to get used to the noise, and they have to be persuaded to use it at first. It can disturb your sleep on a very quiet night.
On the other hand, the noise makes me aware of what the cats are doing, so the noise may not be a negative for some people.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great price, Great door!, December 18, 2010
By monroe808
We are so happy with this cat door! Our cat was constantly sneaking in the basement when the door was open and getting trapped down there until we noticed she was missing or we heard her. It took less than two days for her to get the hang of it, and we have not had a single problem.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for the price, October 20, 2010
By VAdoll
The cat flap is good for indoor use into a room that people don't really go into. It looks fine on the front side once installed. If you have hollow doors however the backside leaves the interior of the door exposed from the rear. Recommended for installation into a laundry room or the like.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works well for my needs, April 11, 2010
By Mary NineNy (NY)
I bought this with an idea for using it that wasn't listed. I replaced a pane of glass in my window with plexiglass, cut an opening for the door to fit in, secured the door to the pg using just the front part of the door, and it works great. I had to used duct tape to secure it because the screws weren't meant to go into the plexiglass, but it works great, at least for the summer!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  PetSafe Cat Flap- Easy to install, great price., June 22, 2008
By S. D. Alcott (Lansdale, PA United States)
If you are looking for a simple-to-install cat door to allow your cats access to the outdoors or closed doors withing your home, this is it. It locks, the flap is magnetic, and once you introduce your cats to it, they should begin to use it. I have also placed one of these items in a basement window. I replaced the glass with plexiglass and then installed the cat flap with ease.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  The Door Ended up Scaring the Cat, September 11, 2011
By K. McKelvey
From a cat's perspective, the fact that this door snaps shut is probably very scary. Our cat was fine with it until he got either his tail or one of his feet caught in it. I came home from work that night to him crying and trying to get my attention, presumably so that I'd open the human door to the basement so that he could go use his litter box. When trying to get my attention didn't work, he ended up doing his business upstairs, and refused to use the cat door from that day on. That was last year.

Well, part of the reason we even bought the cat door was so that we could keep the human door to the basement closed during the winter and keep cold air from coming upstairs. And here we are, it's September, and pretty soon, the weather is going to start to get chilly again. We decided to remove the metal clip so that the magnet wouldn't work anymore. The cat is a bit hesitant, but he's agreeing to use his door again, now that he's realizing it won't snap shut on any of his extremities.

My word of advice is not to buy this cat door because it snaps shut, and to invest in one that doesn't.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Basic and seems satisfactory, September 6, 2011
By Jonathan L. Hall (Vancouver, WA)
Pros: Installation was a breeze anyone with a drill and a jigsaw can get this installed quicker than the time taken to take the door off the hinges.

Cons: There is no liner which I didn't think about until I cut the door and its foam filled so the cat claws out little bits all over the place.
My cat has been using this for less than one week and has already figured out how to open the lock. I'm going to have to change to a door with the lock on one side only, Hopefully a rotating lock like a previous door we had which worked great.

This works great it took our cat about a week to get used to it.

Heads up though! Do not lose the sticky pieces that come with this or you won't be able to assemble completely.

I still can't find mine and the one side of the door falls off.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for what we needed, June 23, 2010
By R. J. Sorretto
This little cat door is perfect for an interior door between rooms. It was easy to install, but the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the instructions were really, well-- dumb. Thank goodness my husband is used to doing some similar projects so he could figure out the idiot sheet!! If it had been up to me, the cat door would still be in the box.
My kitten figured out the door right away, and he uses it -- keeping the odor from his cat box contained in the mud room and not in the house. Yesterday we had to keep him inside and we used the lock successfully. It works. It was not expensive, and I am happy.
