For your truck or SUV, February 9, 2008
By E. Smith (Louisiana)

I bought this for the wife's Expedition. It fits great and looks great. I found this same item at 5 or 6 different web sites, but it was cheapest here. Shipping was fast, and it only took 20 minutes to put together. I bought the basket with the folding shank, and I am glad I spent the few extra $$. This basket is great for carrying large or dirty items that you do not want inside the vehicle (gas cans, sandy beach chairs, your mother-in-law). Buy one today!

Works as advertised, June 12, 2007
By E. Motz (Oakton, VA USA)

I bought this 'trailer' to haul the extra cargo for a week at the beach. It worked perfectly and I liked the fold up position for traveling without cargo which made the trailer safer for me, and everyone else on the road. It was a pain having to pull the pin every time to access the trunk, since I was traveling around town with it in the up position. Maybe Valley could redesign it a bit to make that easier like my bike rack.
From another review I read before purchasing, the side sections don't seem as sturdy as they should be to support the weight listed, but it did haul everything I needed. I liked the bar design which made tying down a tarp over my goodies easy.
After getting home, I did notice a few spots of rusted steel on the carrier, so not the best paint on it from the manufacturer. Easily taken care of with a wire brush and rust-proof spray paint.

Geat Value Folding Hitch Basket, February 10, 2010
By Tzvi D. Amsel (Lakewood, NJ)
|
|
I checked a lot of online resources. This was the absolute best value Folding Basket that I could find. I bought through the Amazon site, but used the Southwest Wheel vendor, as they were the cheapest at $115, yet still included free shipping . The shipment from the Midwest to New Jersey was only about 3 days, even though I did not upgrade the shipping. The direct Amazon price was more expensive, and their free shipping might have been slower. I received it on Saturday. The outer shipping box did seem a little flimsy, and was slightly torn. However, the inner Valley box was in good shape. All the parts were there. The directions to assemble the actual basket were ok, but there were no directions on how to assemble the folding shank. You'll have to figure it out from the provided illustration or give them a call. (The hitch pin with the 2 holes is for the folding part. The little chain goes into the extra hole on the pin, then attach the other side of the chain to the a little hole on the shank. Use the 1 hole pin to attach the shank to the vehicle.)
I got the hitch ok into the 2" receiver on my Tahoe. It's not a tight fit, so it can shake a little side to side, but that did not affect the use of it. The 60" width was a perfect fit for the back of the 2001 Tahoe, as it did not block the back-lights. With the folding shank on and open, I was able to open the back hatch door, as long as the luggage wasn't piled too high. Without the folding shank attachment (which makes the basket extend further back from the vehicle), the door probably would have be blocked. There is an option when you originally set up the basket, to have it done in a way that it sits further back, but I don't think that the bolts were designed to allow changing those positions back and forth. When the shank was folded up the back hatch can't be opened, but it's simple to fold and unfold the shank. The weight rating is 500lbs, but that includes the actual hitch/shank weight of about 70lbs. For regular luggage and coolers I will never get near that. I piled on 2 coolers, 1 large suitcase and a few small ones- double height. Secured with bungee cords, it held great for a 1300 mile road trip. Much easier to load and unload then a roof rack. The included rail was a big help in keeping things secure, and didn't cost any extra then other systems that didn't have the rail. Though of course, if your carrying something odd shaped it could get in the way. If the road is wet you might get some splash from the tires, as the basket is grated on the bottom (though that helps for securing the load). You can buy covers or DIY with a tarp.
The only issue that I could think of was the blocking of the license plate. With luggage on I moved the license plate to the back of the basket and secured it with plastic ties . When I folded it up I cut the ties and repositioned the license plate, again with new ties (not expensive). Otherwise, even when the shank was folded the plates were blocked at least a little. Some states might also require a lit up license plate for night use.
You can get fancier attachments, but this was a great deal.

alot of flex with heavy loads, July 23, 2010
By Beachrights (Cape Cod)
|
|
I bought this for 2 reasons- 0ne, to keep beach items out of the truck and two, for long trips and cargo.
We have had this thing on our 09 Ford Flex for about a month straight now- we use it almost daily and it is heavy so removal is a pain in the "arse"
For light loads [beach chairs, dump runs] it is great. We used it this past weekend on our 1st long trip and loaded it up [200lbs or so] I found it flexed a lot to the point I wondered if it was going to end up skidding past us on the highway! I tow a 2200 lb boat so I know the hitch is good- it was the "neck" part that seemed to have a good deal of play in it that allowed for about 3-5" of up and down movement. It made it but the 1st hour was spent looking in the rear-view mirror!
Other than that we love it- does the job- quite heavy- easily put together- folding option is nice and easy to use, wifey does not complain.

Poorly Packed, May 18, 2007
By J. Schiefer
|
|
Poorly packed, metal pieces rubbed against each other during transport and now I have to re-paint it before I even use it (or it will start rusting first time it rains). Very heavy too, remember to subtract the weight of this carrier from your tongue weight capacity to figure if you can really haul 500 lbs.

perfectly satisfied, April 3, 2011
By David Reynolds (CONWAY, AR, US)

I purchased after reading other reviews. Package arrived intact and undamaged with all parts and was simple to assemble. I used it on my Honda Pilot for a week-long trip 2000+ mile trip to Florida to carry 2 large ice chests (one for cold storage and the other for extra cargo space)freeing up the limited cargo area for suitcases, etc. Previously, the cargo for 5 adults in the car blocked my vision through the rear-view mirror and made cramped quarters for all. It made a more comfortable and safer ride. It did not block access to the rear door (unless folded) and folded nicely when unloaded so I didn't have to remove and store in my hotel rooms.

Awesome Cargo Carrier, February 5, 2010
By K. Biever

We have been renting a small UHaul to travel from VA to MS in order to keep space for everyone in the car. We purchased this one before our trip this year and used it instead. It was awesome! Very easy to install and load. Allowed for the back door of the vehicle to still open and for the dog to get in and out of the back easily even with it fully loaded. Reasonably priced and definitely well worth the money!

got this for misc outdoor uses, and put it on a Yukon XL 2010. i can still open the liftgate when the hauler is in the 'down' position which is nice. i bought the anti-rattle sleeve elsewhere, although i wasn't bothered by rattling much in the first place. the fold-up feature is fantastic, wouldn't even think of buying one without it. only drawback is that this is a pretty heavy item. it's a little easier to get into the hitch if the hauler is in the folded up position, using your knees to support it while you're lining things up. highly recommend this product.

Great Value, October 17, 2010
By Mayacayey
|
|
This item arrived in a box and consisted of two pieces. It was quick and simple to assemble. I attached it to my hitch and the only thing that was negative was the amount of play (sway)it had, but it wasn't so bad that it was a major concern. I later inserted a metal shim in the hitch to minimize the play. It worked like a champ when I caught and transported my first deer for the season. I also used it to carry heavier items such as 400+ lbs of mulch. It had no problems doing this. Also the rails going around the platform was excellent in that i was able to attach bungie cords and straps. For the value, I am extremely happy anad highly recommend it.

Great Folding Hitch Mount!, September 9, 2010
By Dominick A. Puipuro Jr. (MANDEVILLE, LA)

Purchased this cargo carrier versus roof mount due to drag and accessability! Easy assembly and folding feature were a perfect fit. This carrier is sturdy and when folded can still open the full hatch not just top window of our GMC Yukon XL. All in all my first and best cargo carrier!

Great Way to Add Volume, July 24, 2010
By BookGateway (Tennessee)
|

I love having this! I've used this on several long trips now and cant tell you how much it helps to free up all the leg room in the van. Keep a couple things in mind:
1. This is heavy. A strong man can put it in place and take it off, but most of the time it takes two to get the holes lined up and the hitch lock in.
2. Folding up is way worth it! Every time I went to a park for a tournament I dropped off my load and then someone would need something from a store. The ability to fold this up makes this hitch stand out.
3. You'll need some heavy duty tools to put this together. Some of the bolts have to be tightened to a certain torque. I took it to my mechanic who put it together for me. I recommend you consider that unless you have a torque wrench.
I think this is a great value and am very satisfied with the product.

Great cheap cargo basket., July 19, 2010
By Chad Tate (Venus, TX USA)
|
|
I recently purchased this for our family vacation road trip. I was surprised at how cheap this product was considering that it also folded. This thing worked great. I was a little worried that it would be cheaply made, but it seemed very solid. I was also worried that I wouldn't be able to fold it while using it with our Tahoe, but it worked great and had plenty of room. The only complaint I had is that it rattled while folded up, but this is probably to be expected with all of them. I bought a silent hitch pin (Valley 76820 Silent Hitch Pin) and it fixed this problem. I'm glad I pulled the trigger on this product and highly recommend it to anyone needing a cheap cargo carrier.

Excellent Carrier, July 6, 2010
By Y. Douglas (Dallas, TX)
|
|
We have an Expedition but did not want to use the back area for storing our luggage. I have previously used a roof rack for our luggage on road trips but this causes a decrease in fuel economy. I selected this carrier because it folds up and appeared very sturdy. We have now used it on a 3,000 mile round trip and it held up very well and we experienced no side effects from the rack extending in the back. If you have a full size SUV, highly recommend that you get the model that folds up so that you do not have to remove the rack in limited parking areas. This is a definate buy for taking road trips.

A good, solid, sturdy rack, June 11, 2010
By Rick Snyder (Maine)
|
|
The rack is well built and very solid. It was very easy to assemble and is stable with a heavy load on it. As others have said in their reviews, the packaging is absolutely horrible. The box arrived with holes all over the place. I wouldn't have been surprised if the hardware had fallen out but I was fortunate to find it intact. Due to the rotten packaging the rack is scuffed in a number of places. Sure, a bit of Rustoleum spray paint will take care of it, but why should we have the bear the expense of fixing up a brand new item? Valley should get their act together.

Highly Functional, April 21, 2010
By DeanOK (Virginia)

I have been using my cargo basket for several months now. Based on the description I expected to get a non-retractable mount, but much to my delight the basket can be folded up while not in use. It seems to be as stable as the more expensive brands, and just as sturdy. I did not give five stars because the powder coating is not as durable as it could be (although some black Rust-Oleum spray fixed it right up).

Great product!, January 23, 2010
By Shawn M (Texas)

After a long search for a hitch hauler, I decided to go with this one. It is the best value that I found and has done a great job. I have a 99 Ford Expedition and it fits perfectly, especially the fold up feature. Best features, folding feature, adjustable assembly that allows you to fit the hitch you you vehicles size. I used this product for the first tome over the holidays and drove from Texas to San Diego to Lake Tahoe and back. It was very stable and no noise problem. I used rubbermade totes and cargo straps for my cargo and had no issues. I recommend this product to anyone looking for a great hitch hauler. I got the best price on Amazon $115.00 with free delivery, about $40 cheaper than everywhere else. Great product.

Very handy!, July 14, 2009
By Dradgy (Central PA)

I have used my cargo carrier about a dozen times now with no problems. I didn't think that I would use it as much as I do. It is easy to mount into hitch receiver. Folds up easy. I mostly use it to carry my son's motorcycle (Honda XR80r approx. 150 pounds). The most weight that I have had on it is about 225 lbs. and I didn't notice any difference in the handling of my vehicle. I don't know what I would be doing without it!
P.S. I liked the cargo net (not included)

the product is solid and straight forward to put together.
however, i can not close/raise the cargo carrier b/c it hits my bumper. i drive a '03 tahoe so my car and my bumper are rather popular items. the picture shown may be a bit misleading. there are extensions i can buy so no big deal, but it would have been nice had i known it did not fit all makes and models out of the box. overall, happy with purchase.

This Cargo carrier is great. It took about 15 minutes to put together and was ready to use. It's a little heavy for a women to load up to the hitch but other than that it's awesome. It's easy to fold up when not in use and my hatch cleared it even when it was loaded up with a bunch of stuff. I recommend this for anyone who needs more cargo space.

Shoddy Customer Service, June 17, 2011
By Alan Crosby (Potomac Falls, VA)

I can't review this product fully because it was missing parts when it arrived. So I have not been able to fully assemble the unit. I called Valley's customer service department and the person on the phone seemed sure that all the parts were there and that I just didn't know what I was talking about. After going back and forth for fifteen minutes he finally agreed that a part was missing and took down my information. It has been one month to the day that I placed the order and I still have not received the part. I've made numerous attempts to call them by phone and I get voicemail every time. I also sent an email that has not been answered either.

Disappointing, August 12, 2009
By Crystal Spirit (near Republic, WA or Seattle, WA)

The carrier was not packed well. The carrier was also warped and looks tipped to the drivers side most of the time, if I don't shift the weight carried to the passenger side of the carrier..... I'm very disappointed and would have shipped it back had it been easier to repackage and been packaged adequately..... I should have bought the cargo carrier from Harbor Freight - It was made in China also...... & lots cheaper...... & easier to return for being defective / warped......................... the only thing you get is the "Valley" label on this one- NOT a good recommendation for any of their other products after seeing this one.

a little wobbly, August 15, 2011
By RENEE BELL
|
|
The basket seems sturdy, but the bottom is a wire mesh that is only slightly welded to the edges of the basket so make sure the weight is evenly distributed. The basket also sticks out from the back of the vehicle quite a bit so it seems a little wobbly. We have not taken it for a test ride yet, so maybe with some weight in it, it won't seem as bad.
We originally were shipped a product with missing hardware, but the shipper sent me a new one right away so that was really good.

A real back saver, May 15, 2011
By Thomas C. Sullivan (ANAHEIM, CA, US)

Finally a way to haul those camping items that had to go on the roof rack. Now they can be easily lifted and tied down without having to do acrobatics hanging onto the roof rack. The cargo carrier went together without any problems and was easy to slide into the hitch. The unit is very sturdy and the extra rail around the base made it really easy to secure the gear I stacked up. After reading several other opinions that the rack rattled, I decided to use ratcheting tie downs to secure it to the receiver - one from each side. No noise or any shifting in 500 miles. If you're looking for a way to transport extra gear I highly reccomend the Valley hitch mounted cargo basket. Oh yea, the fold up design means you can leave it on and not have a problem to park just about anywhere. Great piece of equipment! My wife is happy too.

Very Good Carrier, April 19, 2011
By Go Illini (Springfield, IL)
|
|
We bought this product in April and have used it on a couple trips. One trip was to Florida and was about 700 miles. The carrier did fine on that trip, I followed another comment from another review and used a wooden door shim to wedge it (hitch)in tight. I have a Ford Expedition and once we were in Florida we unpacked and folded it up and placed it in a closet until our return trip.
The second trip was over some rougher terrain and about 300 miles each way. I did not use the shim this time and it was just fine- probably not necessary as the roads were rough and hilly. I would defintitely buy this unit again. The only subtle drawback was the lack of instructions with the hitch pin chain, no biggie.
We bundled the carrier with the Rola expandable cargo bag. On our first trip we hit extensive rain- not a leak. The second trip we encountered more rain and it was perfectly dry inside. The bag fit in the carrier fine and we had enough room for a typical cooler.
This quality is much better than the cheaper carriers which tend to bend easier and do not have a rail.
Good travelling

Received my rack and as stated by previous reviewers the packaging by Valley is horrible.Box was all beat up and the carrier was a little scratched, but hey it's a cargo rack not a show piece.About the only disappointment was that after just one night out in the rain rust started forming where the mesh screen is tack welded to the bottom of the frame.I just cleaned it up,but hopefully this won't be an on-going chore and it won't rust out in a year or two.

Great cargo carrier, December 3, 2009
By Ken (St. Augustine, FL USA)
|
|
I have a 8 passenger Ford E350 that I was planning on a taking on a long trip with our family of eight, so I wanted a cargo carrier to carry most of our luggage to allow more room inside the van for us to ride more comfortably. We have traveled over 1,000 miles so far and it has worked great!
I used a tarp to wrap around the bags to keep them dry and with two straps going lengthwise, four straps along the width, and a number of bungee cords to keep the tarp pulled tight, it has traveled well.
I got the basket that can fold up, which I haven't needed to use yet but I like having that option. I also like the basket style for more security in holding the bags and providing more places to attach straps and cords.

Worked very well for us on its first trip, September 28, 2010
By J. W. Byrn (Fort Collins, CO USA)
|
|
We got this cargo carrier to help us with a trip from Colorado to Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota about 2000 miles with 2 adults and 4 kids. We added a Rola 59102 Expandable Hitch Tray Cargo Bag and a Valley 91001 Small Cargo Net as well as a hitch lock. This combination worked very well overall. I tracked our gas mileage and it ranged from 21-28 MPG for a Honda Odyssey.
I assembled to the cargo carrier and it went together pretty easily. The hardest part was needing a torque wrench, which I had to buy, (and using it correctly without breaking bolts which I did). On the plus side I was able to go to my local big box home center and easily get replacement bolts and nylon locking nuts. The down side was that I trusted the instructions to have the hardware match what I needed. What was specified was too small. This required another trip to the store.
I might not be remembering the instructions correctly but as I recall they have the bolts extend into the cargo space. This causes problems with things like cargo bags. When I get a change I think I will reverse the bolts so I do not have potentially bag / cargo ripping bolts within the basket. Might not look as good but so what. Instead of that we used a piece of hard plastic to act as a shield without problems.
In addition I configured the basket to be extra extended per the instructions. This worked out extremely well. With that configuration we could easily raise and lower the rear hatch on the Honda Odyssey with the cargo bag fully loaded. It would have been very very annoying to have had to load the inside of the minivan and then close the door and then load the cargo bag.
We also used the fold up feature. Once we got to each of our destinations and unloaded it was easy to fold up the basket and effectively eliminate the extension. The main drawback here is that it resticts the utility of the backup camera since it blocks the view some. Not a big thing.
Another consideration was that we are not "tow people". That is we do not have a boat, jet-ski, trailer etc. The important piece there is that one makes sure one has the correct class hitch. In the end it turned out that I had gotten a valid hitch.
Also I do not think I would ever put 500 lbs on this. Of couse I do not think I will ever need to.
The other issue which folks have mentioned is the packaging. This came with the box in the process of being shredded and having big holes. It was packed in a way to minimize the loss of the parts bag but still I think it was a matter of luck that we did not have missing parts.
I used Amazon Prime to get overnight shipping and that worked out very well. I think I got this within 18 hours of order.
Bottom line is that this worked very well overall. I cannot imagine using a rooftop carrier instead. This was way more convenient. I would have given it 5 stars save for the instructions and the packaging.

The person who designed this thing had no thought in mind. It was put together cheap and comes in pieces instead a one or two piece construction. When placed on the reciever, it is very sloppy. I was at the gas station the other day and noticed a traveler having same one his pickup and I asked what he thought of the product. He said exactly the same thing. Spend the extra money and buy a better constructed product. The last one I had was made by Draw-Tite. Should of never given it to my son.

Great but not for Jeeps, September 4, 2011

Well engineered, sturdy. Fits the bill. Is all it's advertised, BUT, with the rear spare tire on my jeep wrangler, the door won't swing open over the hitch hauler. And it will not fold up. Limits access considerably to the rear inside cargo area. I still CAN haul the oily lawnmower, bloody deer, Can easily tote 2 bicycles, or smelly gas cans without any worries....

Packaging damage, December 23, 2011
By TRC

I don't know how to rate the product itself, since it is a gift and my husband hasn't yet opened it. However, the box arrived busted in several places with one end completely open, so I am hoping that the product itself is not damaged and that there are no missing pieced. I will update after Christmas.

Cargo Carrier, December 12, 2011

This is a well made product, but the packaging is flimsy. Several bolts, locknuts and washers were missing from the
hardware package. Not a really big problem, as Home Depot had the parts in stock. Otherwise I am pleased. A word of caution!
Do not tighten the nuts until you mount the unit into your hitch receiver. Balance it, hold it and tighten while holding in place. Mine was "whomper-jawed" and I had to loosen the nuts, square the unit, and re-tighten.

Fantastic carrier, easy to put together. Extends far enough out to allow the back door on our Honda Pilot to be opened. Very glad I opted for the folding feature. Outstanding product.
