5.0 out of 5 stars.  Use Blinky "3H" and Sport Spot together on your helmet, April 18, 2008
By OB Ron (San Diego, CA USA)
The Blinky "3H" is great, but don't miss making a combo with the Planet Bike Sport Spot 4 LED Bicycle Light with Head, and Handlebar Mounts as a headlight to mount on your helmet. With the Sport Spot on the front, it's fantastic to be able to point a light at drivers just by looking at them. Since the Blinky "3H" swings, it sort of flashes randomly without using the flash mode. (I use a separate flashing taillight attached to my backpack.) These lights are very light weight. I hardly know I have them mounted on my helmet. Most people who see me with them on my helmet think they're great. These two should be sold as a combo since the headlight takes three batteries, and the rear light takes one, so you can easily recharge four NiMH batteries at a time. The only deficiency on the Sport Spot headlight is that it's tough to get the mounting angle right with the limited places to strap it onto your helmet, so you might have to glue a little wedge on it to adjust the angle.

Another great night safety product is the Planet Bike BRT Strap Multi-Use LED Bicycle Safety Light. Nearly the whole strap (7" x 13/16" of it) glows or blinks bright red when it's turned on -- it appears as a yellow reflective surface when it's off. It works great. It's lightweight, easy to use and comfortable, plus fits in my hip-pack nicely. I use it as a leg-light (above my left calf) for night biking or late afternoon inline skating. Having a light move as you pedal, and highlight the left edge of your bike provides a major safety advantage.

If you bike much at night, do yourself and your loved ones a favor and get all three, the BRT Strap, the Sport Spot, and Blinky "3H". I highly recommend all three of them.

I also strongly recommend a bright safety vest, jersey, or jacket for day and night biking. A good one can provide a dramatic reduction in scary incidents -- people turning in front of you or coming by too close. I try hard to always use one -- it makes an amazing difference -- people seem to have an automatic reflex to be much more cautious and wait for me to pass when they see my safety vest.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Got lots of attention, which is perfect., May 25, 2007
By Scout (Providence, RI)
Bikers and car drivers would lean out and say they liked my helmet light, and I was using it in Manhattan, a place with enough distractions -- so now that mine finally broke I've been searching to make sure I get the same again, cause it just plain works well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Safety Item, August 24, 2006
By L. Spear
This is a great item to attach to your helmet!
I have it attached to my helmet and ride with it, while I train for races, in the day and at night. I want to be as visable to cars as possible. Cars can see this light from much farther away then a bike mounted light that is too low.

I am always concerned the old people can't see me so I feel better riding with the light.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Really Ideal Light, February 26, 2008
By An Engineer and Business Person (San Francisco, CA USA)
It's bright, it sits up high on your helmet but stays perfectly level, and so it's a real boon to safety. I used to have cars approach from behind and then turn in front of me until I got this light. Now it rarely happens. And a single AAA battery (included) lasts a pretty long time.

Press the button to flash (all three LEDs flash at the same time), hold them on, or turn them off. Use the included velcro-based elastic strap to attach to the holes in the back of your helmet.

Everyone should have one of these.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Be Seen - Be Safe - This Light will do That, September 11, 2007
By J. Gross (Black Forest, CO USA)
This is a very nice product. It mounted on my bike helmet without a problem. I end up riding at dusk or at dark many days. I use this helmet light and a blinking light on my seat post. Motorists always see me. I suggest a luminous vest and lights(front & back) if you ever ride after dark or at dusk. It's cheap insurance. By the way - if you ride a bike, wear a helmet.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solves the biggest problem with LEDs - best light out there, July 10, 2010
By Philip Pace (Wheeling, IL USA)
The issue with LEDs is the focus of the lights. They can either be well seen vertically or horizontally, and all manufacturers design their LEDs with a broad horizontal pattern. This means if the light isn't perfectly level, it's virtually useless (check out the scores of different lights during a night ride).

While this isn't the brightest light out there, the fact that it is self-leveling makes it always in the right position and more visible than any other light. Unless you hard mount a light to your bike and make sure it's level, you're never gonna get the best projection of light. Besides, the higher up the light is, the easier it can be seen. No one who rides at night should be without this thing mounted to their helmet!

Down side - after four years of it bouncing around my helmet, the bracket kinda wore out (I attached it to a curved part, so there was stress on the bracket). Planet Bike sells a replacement kit for $5 - great customer insight on their part.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bright, blinky, and up high where it can be seen., October 6, 2008
By Casu Marzu (San Francisco)
I live in a big city with lots of cars who arn't looking for me. After a near-miss where I had to throw myself into a controlled fall to avoid being hit by a truck that blew his stop sign and listening to the driver's lame "I didn't see you" excuse, I decided that I NEEDED this light.

As it's helmet-mounted it's up as high as can be and is about eye-level with the drivers behind you. The gimbaled action of the helmet mount keeps the light visable when ascending or decending hills. Also, the motion of the light created when the cyclist is in motion adds to its attention getting properties.

The light has two light patterns: Steady on or a single flash pattern. I wish it had a chasing option, but it doesn't :-(

Overall I love this light and am planning to buy another for my other helmet.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Planet Bike Blinky "3H" Helmet Mount light, November 3, 2007
By Big Al (Cincinnati)
I purchased this light mainly because it appeared to be easily mounted to the rear of a bike helmet. While helmet mounting was not quite as simple as I'd hoped, it does the job and will allow switching between helmets in a matter of minutes. It's also reasonably bright and allows me to easily turn it on while riding. Overall, a nice light for the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bright, Easy to Attach, September 25, 2008
By Mark Waite (Loveland, CO USA)
I've liked this light very much. The attachment straps worked surprisingly well. The plastic loops which sit atop the bike helmet have a velcro strap fed which adjusts to the size and shape of the helmet mounting slots. Those plastic loops have an opening on their outside edge which I expected would make the mounting flimsy or likely to disconnect. I've been pleasantly surprised that in about 2 weeks of daily commuting to and from work they have not shown any sign of detaching from the bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love them, October 25, 2007
By G. Griffes (Southern California)
These are great; drivers can see me clearly in daylight. I probably look like a geek, but I have noticed that more drivers see me since I started wearing them; one in the front and one on the back of my helmet. I like how they tilt to remain facing forward when my head moves.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Light and Easy to Use, December 8, 2009
By Eric (Roseville, CA)
Very light and hardly noticable on the helmet. Mounting it was easy, although my helmet and the slots didn't exactly make it easy to mount. If you pull the strap too tight, it will slide off the loops, so it's a fine line between tight and too tight. Even after mounting it, it still moved around a bit, so I solved the problem by using a small piece of velco that had a tape backing on each side. Worked great! Held the light in place, yet I can still remove it during the summer months. As other reviewers have noted, it seems to work best if you leave it on Steady mode and as it moves around when you ride, it appears to flash due to the self leveling. I highly recommend it as a high mounted tail light.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  neat idea, December 28, 2008
By chmeeesd (Spring Valley, CA United States)
Bright little light. I like the idea of the high-mounted light for better visibility, but the helmet mount doesn't fit my helmet very well. I'm a little worried about the durability of the mounting bracket, but it's holding up ok so far. We use this in addition to a regular light mounted on the seatpost for better visibility in intersections where you might be turning your head to look for cross-traffic. Two other things that keep me from giving it a higher rating, the self-leveling doesn't keep it perpendicular to the road, it points down slightly, making it harder to see from a distance and the power button on the back is very easy activate accidentally.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Easily mountable, but stitching is wanting., September 19, 2008
By nibo (Portland, OR)
This light was very easy to mount on both of my helmets and I really have no worry that it's going to come off. I use it in conjunction with another red light on my seatpost (the Superblinky). I've had at least one driver so far stop and tell me at a stop light how much she liked this light, because it made me easier to see.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  bicycle tail light, June 28, 2008
By Phillip Smith (Philadelphia)
Although this light, with its swivel mounting, seems to be intended for the helmet, I have mounted it on the rear basket of my folder bike, using plastic ties to secure it. The light is very bright, and does the job nicely. If I want a light on the helmet, a cheaper one with a simple clip takes up less space, but then I have a plastic strip on the rear of my helmet to clip it to. The Blinky's mounting is a bit cumbersome and doesn't come off.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Idea!, September 30, 2009
By Live Love Laugh (Philadelphia, PA)
This is a great product. It easily mounted to my helmet which is not your typical style so I was very happy about that. It's bright and it's in a perfect spot. Combined with a back light on my bike, I am much more visible at night which is SO important for the city. The light has two settings, steady and flashing. Get this product!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent, August 30, 2009
By Paul E. Rosenthal
The helmet-mounted light is a smart idea well executed. It provides a safe tail-light (particularly useful when packages bungee-corded to the bike's rack obscure the regular taillight). It's easy to mount, and in the month I've had it seems sturdy.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Was great until it needed batteries..., September 10, 2010
By mb
I bought one for me, and one for my wife. I tried to put new duracel's in each of them, but the battery ends didn't quite make contact. I tried very hard to make it work, but it just didn't... and I don't want to buy 10 different manufacturers of batteries to see what would work. Before the battery fiasco, I wrote the below. I returned these.

Easy to install, and self leveling hinge is awesome! I have a light below my seat, and use this up high on the helmet. I notice cars are giving me much more room, than when I just had the under the seat light. Can't be too safe out there!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Another Great product from Planet Bike!, July 7, 2008
By rbtg (California, USA)
A very versatal and clever design. I mounted this on the back of my Wife's helmet. It can be mounted on either a helmet or on the bike in a couple of differenct positions. It self levels and is very bright. This company never ceases to amaze me at the simple yet effective designs that work well and are very competitively priced.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Light is good, mounting not so good, March 3, 2010
By Alicia L Chandler (Erie, PA)
The light seems to be just fine. However, I had a very difficult time mounting this on my helmet. I didn't have center point on my helmet like it pictures, so I kind of had to straddle and opening. Seems like it will work, but with the amount of time it took to get just right, I'm not going to take it off. Contemplating just gluing it to the helmet.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works as advertised, December 25, 2009
By Brent (Fresno, ca United States)
Bright and works great. The light is on a swivel and moves, this is how it auto-adjusts. This creates mild constant movement while riding and makes it even easier for you to be seen.

The only part I'm not thrilled with is that the mounting bracket is 100% flat. Some curvature would of been nice to make it fit better on the helmet. It still works great though!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good safety item, with one drawback, March 20, 2011
By Wendy Stengel (Washington, DC United States)
I bought this to make my Xootr commute a bit safer at night. Installation was easy, the light is bright and I feel safer with it on.

The one drawback: It can be tricky to turn it on and have it stay on if you don't take off your helmet and look at what you're doing. (I suppose being near a mirror would work, too.) Once you figure it out, it's easier, but my review dropped a star because of the fussiness of the interface.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Helps Drivers See You, November 16, 2010
By David (Chicago, IL USA)
Bought this light to go along with a Radbot, Planet Bike SuperFlash and other Planet bike tail light. My girl friend commutes daily in Chicago and this light helps drivers see her. It's not as bright as The Radbot or Superflash but since it sits on the helmet it's a little better for SUV and Trucks that might not see standard tail lights. The mount seems decent and stable plus, it swivels so that the light is always visible with head movements.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Good concept, flawed execution, July 14, 2011
By L. Erickson
We've had four different units of this light. When manufactured well with the right batteries, it works very well. Unfortunately, the swivel feature doesn't always work well. Some units are "sticky", preventing the light from swiveling loosely. Others were fine. The more important and very irritating problem involves the batteries. All of the units we tried came with odd-brand batteries, which in and of itself is not that unusual. However, we soon learned that we had a major problem getting the units to work again when replacing the batteries with the more commonly available brands, like Duracell, Eveready, or Rayovac. It turns out that the positive post for all those brands are shorter than the ones for the off-brands that come with the units. Thus, the battery posts don't touch the connectors, giving the units power. We ended up saving any off-brand batteries with longer posts that we got inside other electronics we bought, just to use in these light units. Eventually, we ran out of odd batteries and had to stop using the lights. It's possible that Planet Bike has since discovered their design flaw and corrected it, but I wouldn't bet on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good price, not perfect, April 26, 2011
By M. Wolf (Palo Alto, CA)
I bought 3 helmet lights; you need rear lights to help you stay alive on the road. The light is somewhat fragile - the case came open on me when I was trying to turn it on. The on switch is located in a bad spot. Once u get used 2 these little annoyances, it works fine. It's very visible. I recommend that you also purchase a rear light for the rack. I have 3 tail lights.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great light SAFEST LIGHT YOU CAN OWN a must, November 12, 2011
By beaner (San Diego, CA)
This is the best light you can own for bike and scooter safety. I have been using one for a couple of years when riding my electric scooter. It mounts on the back of my helmet. I have had drivers comment on it because they noticed me because of this light. What makes it so good is that it self levels and is always visible to those behind you. If you turn or move your head it automatically stays level. For the price this is a must have safely item.

Works perfect with Rayovac rechargeable. This is a light that works perfectly not a place to discuss ones poor choice in batteries. If you can put in two batteries correctly you shouldn't have any problem.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS LIGHT.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great light, November 12, 2011
By RW (San Francisco, CA United States)
This seems like the best option for putting a light on your helmet. LED lights are very directional, if they aren't mounted perfectly horizontally, they waste most of their light down at the ground or up in the air (is it acceptable to point this out to other riders at stoplights when I see their LED light pointed down at the ground?)

The swivel bracket keeps the light horizontal for the most part -- except for some motion induced swinging that can't be avoided.

It's not a perfect fit on my helmet, the light tends to slide to one side or the other so it's not perfectly centered, but that doesn't affect the functioning of the light. If I really cared about it I might use some double sided tape to stick it into place. I'm hesitant to use anything stronger (like zip-ties) since if you have an accident (or snag it on a low-hanging branch), you want the light to break away and not pull your head back.

Overall I'm quite satisfied with it.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Start malfunctioning after 6 months, October 23, 2011
By lazybeegal
After 6 months of use, our rear blinky starts malfunctioning and will turn on by itself, and it will do that a couple times a night (probably does that during the day too but we notice this mostly at night). It's absolutely bizarre. Now, one thing for sure is that the battery will get drained pretty quickly unless we can find a way to 'fix' it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Yesssss! Finally REAL visible from behind, December 29, 2011
By RowerRob (Seattle, WA USA)
You gotta have multi-level of lights to be seen. The seatpost light along won't do the trick. Backpack and helmet lights are a must. This one does perfectly for me as a dangling helmet light. Oh, they'll see me coming.

Technically, this light is of slim profile and a bit brighter than the 3-LED (same brand) of light I purchased years ago. What an improvement they've made.
