A different Krylion?, September 14, 2009
By M. S. Kubota (San Carlos, CA)
|
|
I just finished 2000 miles (rear tire) on one of these and couldn't be happier. I bought another one for replacement and could not mount it onto my wheel. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that this Krylion that I had just bought had a slightly thicker bead than my other one (bought about 1 year ago) and was made in Taiwan instead of France. I ended up putting this tire on a different bike since I could not mount it on my Campy wheel (after destroying 3 tubes and 3 tire levers). I'm sure the "new" Krylion will otherwise be as good as my last one, but I don't think I will buy these again- at least not for this bike.

Don't hold up, December 31, 2006
By strap (Honolulu, HI)
|
|
I found the performance of these Michelin tires to be adequate. There doesn't seem to be too much in the way of rolling resistance and they grip the road well. The road seems to have eaten these tires up...I have less than 1,000 miles on it and the tires are full of holes--that may say something about the quality of roads out here in Hawaii. I'm getting a flat every time I ride. My next tire will be something a little sturdier.

Michelin Krylion Carbon Tires, December 25, 2009
By Michael N
|
|
Excellent Tires. I was using Pro Race 2 and Pro Race 3 tires. Pro Race 2 were very good but Pro Race 3s were awful. They flat all the time. I had only one flat in 1400 miles of riding and that was from a tiny nail that I cannot blame on the tire. I believe the tire life will be good as well. I swapped rear and front tires after 1300 miles and the rear had plenty of tread left. The front had almost no observable wear. I hope to get 3000 miles from the set.

nice but weak sidewalls, June 26, 2007
By Tedley7 (Pennslyvania)
|
|
with less than 100 miles on a tire had a small rock/pebble/something created a blowout in the sidewall while riding on pavement. They may be nice, light and puncture resistant but my original tires lasted for probably 1500 miles before I got these to replace them. If you buy these carry a sidewall patch (duck tape/dollar bill) and a spare tube (or two). I will probably replace my blown out Krylion with something else......

Not the sturdiest tire out there for commuting, March 13, 2011
By P. Mai (San Jose, CA USA)
|
|
I weigh 165 lb. and commute 33 miles/day roundtrip from San Jose to Fremont, CA, putting around 7000mi/year on my Madone. I ride with the Pro3 on the front and for the past 6 months with the Krylion on my rear. I bought this for the rear because it's touted as a long life tire and the Pro3 was flatting too easily (no problem with the Pro3 on the front though).
I have 2 problems with this tire.
First, it's extremely tight to put on put. Unless you have the strength to tear a telephone book in half forget about trying to flip this tire over the rim without tire levers (this is something I miss from when I was using Bontragers). This is annoying since I often have to replace the inner tube after dark, and it's not easy to see the tube hanging over the rim. Hence, I've punctured several inner tubes while replacing them because the tube gets caught between the rim and the lever.
Second, when the tire does flat it seems to do so explosively. I'm pumping it to 110 psi so I'm not overinflating. However, in just 6 months I'm on my third Krylion. The first tire had a slice that destroyed it. That's just bad luck, but the tear seemed to go well beyond where the slicing took place. The second tire had only a puncture which a patch on the tube should have been able to fix, but again the tear went well beyond the initial point of failure and the tire was destroyed. I'm using up the last Krylion in my stock and I won't be buying this tire again. My feeling with this tire is that the protective strips have poor tearing resistance.
My next rear tire will be the Continental Grand Prix 4-Season which has 2 protective layers of vectran. Hopefully this has enough strength to handle the rigors of city commuting.

Excellent Tires, September 29, 2011
By Kernal (Albuquerque, NM)
|
|
I've been riding on these tires for about a year now and they're still holding up great. I've had only a few (<5) flats in this time, which is impressive in the goathead-infested Albuquerque. The rolling resistance is the lowest of any tires I've ridden on, but they still hold the road great.
Compared to Gatorskins: The Krylions are as puncture resistant, if not more. The Krylions have a smoother ride. The Krylions give a faster ride.
I'll certainly buy these again, if they ever wear out.

Glad to see it back, June 21, 2011
By BikesandCycles

I've used this tire for many years. It has always performed wonderfully in terms of weight, handling and pucture resistance. When I bought my Felt F2 a few years ago it came equipped with a race tire made by Vittoria. Some folks may like that tire, but after having a flat within two miles of my first metric century of the season, they quickly came off and were replaced with the trusty Krylions. Last year apparently Michelin had some problems with the tire when they moved manufacturing to China. Thankfully I wasn't in need last year. This year I needed a set. They are still made in China instead of France, but it seems they have jumped on the problems and gotten the bugs out. I'm pleased to announce that everything that was good about the Krylion in the past is back. I'm not an official racer, but at 54 years old (26 of those years spent riding) I still like to ride hard and challenge the young bucks on the road, and I love what the Krylions do to help this old dog keep his edge.

Great tire, May 26, 2011
By MKMcLaughlin
|
|
I purchased four of these tires at $35 each just over two years ago. I was still using the first two until about 3 weeks ago when I replaced the rear one. I'm 200LBS and inflate them to 115PSI. I do longer rides and it's nice to have the lower rolling resistance without the high costs or more flats. I know I've gotten at least two thousand miles on the first pair. I've used several folding bead tires and I really like this one!

Rides like Pro3Race but clearly heavy duty tire here!, May 1, 2011
By Visit my Amazon Profile page! (Bay Area, CA)
|
|
I got three of the 23mm from Amazon and they are the ones made in France. I know some people have complained about some supposed problems with Michelin moving to Thailand and the tires from there - although Michelin says they moved their own equipment and they are the same...
They weighed about 245g, 250g, and 248g. They are look basically like thick versions of the Pro3Race.
Anyway, from the first ride on them they feel similar to the Pro3Race. I have ordered up some of the red and yellow ones from PBK because the Amazon prices for the colored ones are very high. We'll see if they are made in France or the new ones. I presume the Amazon tires must have been older inventory.
It's obvious from the extra weight and the feel that these guys will be a lot tougher than the Pro3Race, and as the feel is similar they are 5 stars.
Right now I have a Krylion on the back and a Pro3Race still on the front. We'll see how they last over time, but first experience is that they are very nice tires.

Love these tires!, September 15, 2010
By Musicjunkie (New Jersey, USA)
|
|
I replaced the original tires on my Cannondale Synapse with these tires. I couldn't be happier. I haven't even had a flat when I should have (glass, sharp stones, etc). These tires are a great compromise between racing tires and protection against flats. I don't know why some of the other reviewers have had problems with durability. Mine have over 1800 miles on them & are holding up great. I'm pleasantly surprised at the terrific durability.
Like another reviewer, I did have a tough time getting them on my rims, but I just assumed it was due to the tire being stiffer to offer better puncture resistance. I was so impressed, that I bought another pair & put them on my wife's bike.

a very good tire, July 16, 2010
By Pantucci (Norwalk, CT USA)
|
|
These tires last longer than the pro-3-race and are less prone to flats. They can handle small cuts as well, without being destroyed like the pro-3-race. They flat fairly infrequently, but they do flat. A heavier training tire like the Maxxis re-fuse will pretty much never flat, but they are heavier as well, and they have ribs for better traction, adding rolling resistance. The krylion is a good in-between and has treated me well for many years. flats increase with frequency as the tire ages, but they last way beyond the life span of a pro_3_race, which have failed for me in various ways such as side wall blow outs after scuffing an edge, and small cuts leading to tire blowout. If you are racing, these may be a bit slower, but you'll cross the line before someone with a racing tire blowout.

Michelin Quality, March 27, 2011

Typical Michelin quality, good tires, well made, good rolling resistance. But, like all good bicyle tires, they are (too) expensive. They are also difficult to get on and off the wheel rim.

Disappointed, November 16, 2010
By Jim L.
|
|
I purchased the Michelin Krylion tires with great expectations since I have used Michelin tires on my cars for years with great success. I specifically chose the Krylion tire for its claims to puncture resistance. I just had my first flat after only 350 miles of riding. The previous tires that I used had Kevlar belts, I rode two sets of these tires for neatly 4000 miles (over the same paths) without a single flat - I guess I will have to go back to the Kevlar - very disappointing!

Works as advertised., September 12, 2011
By Josh Berry (Atlanta, GA)
|
|
This tire replaced a blowout I had from construction debris near the house. There are a lot of sharp rocks that I am not always able to avoid. So far, I have had zero issues with this as a replacement tire with daily use. I put about 6 miles a day (sometimes upwards of 9) and only have a few areas where the streets are not as clean as I'd care for.
I will have zero hesitation repurchasing these tires if they continue to perform as they have.

Great Training Tire, February 12, 2012
By Smaiser
|
|
I live in the Seattle area, and put in a lot of miles on wet, dirty roads during the winter. I used to ride on Continental tires, but I kept getting flats due to slashed sidewalls or punctured tread. My wife got me a pair of Michelin Pro Race tires for my birthday a few years ago, and I have been riding Michelin tires ever since. During the rainy fall/winter/spring months in Seattle (as in October 1 through July 4th), I use Michelin Krylion tires as my training tires. They are amazing. I have literally never had a flat while using these tires. They are a bit heavier than the Michelin Pro Race 3 tires, but for the money you just can't beat these tires for riding in the rain, training, commuting, etc. Highly recommended!

Try 'em, you'll love 'em!, December 19, 2011
By Steve Anderson (Folsom, CA)

As a cyclist who has been averaging over 12,000 miles a year the last 3 years, the Krylion Carbons are definitely my tire of choice. Great feel and grip, and they outlast anything else I've ever tried, all at low cost. Front tire life is in the 7-8000 mile range, the rears about half that. All for about $35 each, or about $.015 per mile, thanks to Amazon and Michelin.

Great Tires, October 29, 2011
By bjb50

I had some hutchinson tires that were brand new, and after 5 flats in 2 weeks, I paid a little more and bought these tires. I ride around 100 miles a week, and haven't had any problems with these tires. They have a high thread count, and low rolling resistance; I'd buy several sets just to have extra if I had the money. Thanks Michelin!

Last and lasts and lasts, October 1, 2011
By Togiak

I love the Krylions because they last forever. I ride about 5000 miles a year, so I tend to go through a few sets of tires. Thankfully, the Krylions are tougher than nails and have built in durability, so you're not constantly fighting to get another folding bead tire that's way too small onto your rim. I would also say that they roll very well and don't tend to pick up glass or thorns as readily. They're worth the extra money.

Excellent Road Bike Tire, September 2, 2011
By Denver Native
|

I ride about 2,500 miles a year in Denver and in the mountains just outside of Denver. This tire handles great and is quite durable. I usually get about 2,000 miles on the Krylion with very few flats. I've ridden several different tires, including the Michelin's Pro 3 Race and Lithion, but have found that the Krylion best suits my needs of wanting a durable tire that handles well.

Fantastic tire, September 1, 2011
By Q. Nguyen (Minneapolis)
|
|
I've only owned these tires for about 2 weeks now and have only 25 miles on them, but so far I think they are fantastic. They grip the road well, yet have very little rolling resistance. When I was reviewing which tire to buy to replace my original Bontrager tires on my carbon fiber Trek 5200, most of the reviews for the Michelin Krylion were positive. It was a little tricky to get the tires on the wheel, but a little muscle and help from the tire levers did the trick. I definitely would recommend these tires to anyone.

Good Tire, August 25, 2011
By Scott B Johnson
|
|
Prior to using this tire I was averaging at least one flat a month, sometimes two. I ride about 90 miles a week. I've been using them for over a year and have only flatted once. They are a bit tricky to install when new, as most folding tires are. To avoid damaging your tube, I have found that a two step approach works best. First install the tire without the tube, and then remove it and reinstall it with the tube.

Great tires, highly recommended!, August 23, 2011
By BootsLover (Boston)
|
|
I am very happy with these Michelin Krylion tires. I use the 700x23 black/red tire. I have worn out 3 tires and have never gotten a flat on them. I just changed the front tire after 3700 miles because the rubber looked like it was getting small splits. I replaced the rear tire after about 2000 miles because the tire was worn to the point that it was squared off rather than round where it meets the road. I am 150 pounds and pump them up to 115 psi.
All 3 of the tires that I have used so far said they were made in France. I bought 2 more 700x23 black/red from Amazon last week and they also say made in France.
My bike came with Specialized Mondo Pro tires. I'm not an expert, but these Krylions seem to roll just as well. Also, with the Specialized Mondo Pros every little spec on the road (like gravel, sand) seemed to stick to them which drove me crazy. These Michelin Krylion tires grip well but road debris does not stick to them.
The only downside is they are not that easy to get on the wheel. My thumbs are usually sore by the time I am done installing the tire, but hopefully the fact that it is tight means it will stay in place better.

VERY DISAPPOINTING!!, July 25, 2011
By runnerxc

I bought these tires (about 3 weeks ago) because of the mainly terrific reviews of being a solid tire that doesn't flat. But in my first 300 miles I have already had 5 flats, and now the back tire has a hole worn in it already, and it is completely unusable. These tires are worse than the $10 ones that came stock with my bike. I better get my money back!

Looks great on my bike and they are much easier to put on than my old tires. They are still a bit tough if changing a tire in the cold, but they went on relatively easy when changing them in my basement. So far so good, low rolling resistance and smooth ride, only have about 225 miles on them, so hard to tell if they will hold up but so far they have been great.

Seems to be very good tire, September 16, 2011

Have just under a hundred miles on the tires so far. Seem to have minimal rolling resistance, good traction. Also like the red sidewall--adds a little color to the ti bike. ;-) I bought these tires because they were on sale. I had high hopes for this tire. I'm a commuter and after 7 months (about 350-400 miles) this tire thinned out and was completely shot. I started getting serial flats, and realized the tread was fairly gone. It did have a strong start for the first few months and cornered well. But 7 months for a premium tired? Come on!

Hard to install, but looks good, February 22, 2012

Got these to replace my previous tire which was punctured multiple times by thorn on the road. These tires for some reason are very hard to install, extreme forces and tire lever required to put the last bit onto the rim. But once on the rim, it looks pretty good. Have to wait a while to give update on puncture resistance.

These seem to be good tires at a good price. I've only put a couple hundred miles on them as yet. I sometimes ride in a club, and they have a good reputation. The folks at my local bike shop, which charges more for the tires, also think a lot of them. I got them in the 25cc size. If I get several months of wear, I will likely buy them again if the 25cc becomes available here.

Michelin Krylion Carbon Tire (Black/Grey, 700x25c), December 9, 2011
By paul c
|
|
The Michelin Krylion Carbon Tire (Black/Grey, 700x25c) is a excellent tire with the comfortable tubey type ride for which Michelin is known. I waited until the cycling season was over (purchased this tire last year) so I could review this tire after putting on at least 1000 miles. I am please to say that the tire performed well for general riding, road bike touring and centuries. This is the first year I have gone to a slightly larger size (up from 23's) for my fastest road bike and I am pleased with the size change. I notice more comfort and only a slight decrease in speed while climbing. This tire works well on my road bike. Seems to have good durability also. Good cornering. This tire feels like the old Michelin Pro's from 15-20 years ago (no longer available). I will continue to ride with these tires.

Great Tire -IF- you can mount it!!, November 4, 2011
By Bobdobbs62 (NY)
|
|
Bought a pair of Krylions about eight months ago for my commuter bike with Bontrager wheels. They are a freakin' wonderful tire!--easy to install, no flats, smooth ride, fast ride. I have about 1000 miles on this first pair. Fast forward to this month, I decide to purchase a pair for my, and my wife's, road bikes. I had read several reviews on other bike component sites which mentioned that the Krylions were nearly impossible to mount on some rims. I decide to buy them anyway, as they've worked so well on my commuter bike.
The new Krylions arrive in the mail, I install them on my road bike, they are a bit tight but I am able to mount them by hand on my rims; Mavic Ksyrium Equipes. I now start to mount the first Krylion on my wife's road bike with Oval W wheels. The new Krylions are nowhere near close to fitting the rim. -- I scratch my head look at the size, "yup, 700x23," I look at her old cheap Vittoria Zaffiro tires, "yup, they are also 700x23."
Long story short, 90 minutes, two nasty bloody cuts on my hand and one popped tube later I still cannot get these Krylions on this &*$@$*+ Oval rim!! I scratch my head again, curse some more, and put her old Vittoria tire back on, by hand, in less than 5 minutes.
Next day I take the Krylions to my local bike mechanic/guru. This guy has been in the bike trade over 30 years. I hand him the new Krylions and my wife's wheels and, after 15 minutes, the Krylions have this veteran bike mechanic cussing like a sailor.....they still won't mount!!! My mechanic pulls out the heavy iron; a sliding manual tire changing bar, a homemade, smaller version of what you might use on a motorcycle tire; the Krylions still will -NOT- mount.
Finally, after 45minutes of employing sheer willpower, the manual tire bar, and some tire levers, the first Krylion mounts the Oval rim. Another 40 minutes, and one popped tube, later my mechanic mounts the other Krylion on the rear wheel. By this time he's beet red and soaked with sweat. He says that this is the most trouble he's had with a set of tires since the mid '80's!!!
.....now I'm terrified that my wife is going to get a flat out on some country road. There is no earthly way she, or I, will be able to change a tube with these Krylions on her rims out in the field.
So, be warned, these tires may not fit your wheels.
