Good theft deterrent, December 27, 2007
By Chris Wellington (United States)

This should not be considered a standalone lock for a high risk area, but it is a quick and handy way to make your bike a little less attractive to steal. The ease of use ensures that it will get used frequently, and any lock has to be better than nothing at all.
My preferred use for this lock is as a backup for a good U-lock. With both locks, the bike looks fairly unfriendly for carrying away, and it allows you to lock the front wheel without removing it, which I find quite a pain.

I love it., July 30, 2008

I had no idea what type of lock to buy for my bike. Reading a ton of Amazon.com reviews, I came to the conclusion that if anyone wants your bike that bad, they'll find a way to bust your lock. I felt a little more confident with this one because I read a lot of reviews that mentioned someone taking a hammer to the locks with a combanation and getting away with their bikes. Hopefully this one will keep my bike safe. I feel good about it. It is a heavy one though so if that is a concern you may want to look for another one. This one works for me though. I would recommend this to anyone.

Cheap. Works. Not secure!, August 15, 2007
By Sam (NYC, NY)

It's better than nothing, but do realize that the cable can be compromised with relatively little effort (I'm told thieves simply insert two metal rods in one of those small loops and twist in opposite directions).

Not for use as sole deterrent in high crime area, September 3, 2010

I should have listened to the 2007 review; I wmight have held onto my bikes a bit longer (: I used this lock/chain to tie up my bikes on a Thule rack, whilst parked in Boston. They were left unattended for less than two hours. When I returned, the cable had been cut and the bikes stolen. From the looks of the remaining cable, the thief did not have that hard a time of it.
From now on, it's U-lock + cable for me, and try not to leave it unattended at all.

Use with another lock!, February 5, 2009
By S. Lin

I only use this lock to secure my front wheel which is a quick release wheel. I needed something light along with my U lock to secure my bike in these mean NYC streets... Anyways, its great if you're not securing your bike with this alone, i normally have 3 different locks when securing outside of my school because i leave it there all day while i'm in class. Thieves tend to be lazy, so the more you have the more unwilling they are to break through them. Unless of course you're bike is worth all that work. Wish the cable was shorter and beefed up the lock a bit but oh well. You get what you pay for.

Good length, May 27, 2008

Good lock, although the lock itself feels flimsy because of the plastic cover. The cable is a good length. I use it to secure two bikes to a bike rack and am able to go through the body and front rims of both.

Sturdy!!, April 11, 2010
By Jagadish (Auburn, AL)

Looks like a sturdy lock. I don't leave my bike outside for a long periods of time. I just wanted something to keep it secure when I do go out and have to leave it outside for a bit. This looks like a sturdy lock and seems well made and a little heavy too. I've had it for over a month now. It seems like it will last awhile. Recommended.

Wraps around my bike, February 25, 2010
By Dat (Renton, WA)

Does what's its suppose to and very convenient. I was able to coil this around my bike's bar while I bike and when I need to lock up it's as easy as pulling one end and looping it around the bike rack.

The lock is in a good quality one and so is the wrap around, but still seems like it could be broken if someone really tried.

Bell Key 'N Go Steel Cable Padlock for Bike, October 6, 2008
By Darrel (California)
|
|
While this obviously is a very well known brand and is a quality product Bell has failed to provide a well made lock it seems the shakle is thin and easily cut with a bolt cutter or some other tool however the body of the lock is hardened steel case which stands up to punnishment like dropping etc, I replaced this lock with a better quality lock that I know I can trust, the steel cable is very good

Great Lock to go along with a U-Lock, September 27, 2011
By ZstarZ

I am using this lock with a U-lock and it seems to be working out as a good combo. The lock that comes with this set is quite weak, but coupled with a good U-lock the cable will help keep your tires and seat from getting stolen because it has a good length of 6 feet. I am using this product with the U-lock, Kryptonite Keeper 12 Standard Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket Bicycle U-Lock (4-Inch x 8-Inch).

As advertised, July 14, 2011

I received this straightaway after ordering, a convenience that I have come to expect from Amazon. The product is fine, just as described; the cable will thread through front and back wheels and through frame and still provide adequate extra length to wrap around a post or other anchor. It also fits through the vent-holes of my helmet, so I can secure pretty much everything I don't want to carry with me, once I stash the bike.
Two small keys accompany the padlock; they seem to be sturdy enough, if the lock is lubricated as required (WD-40, or a light oil). I would not subject these keys to any heavy torquing.
PLEASE NOTE: Although the shackle of the lock is hardened, don't expect it to hold up even to a cheap pair of bolt cutters. Yep; that's all that's required to get into the stolen bike business: about $50 for a pair of bolt cutters (or, I suppose an enterprising urban "bike dealer" could steal those, too).
This padlock and cable setup should be coupled with a U-lock of some sort, based upon a simple formula: the worse the neighborhood, the heavier the lock.
However, it seems to me (just an opinion) that if you leave your bike in a bad neighborhood, parts will disappear from it no matter HOW securely you lock it up.
*EDIT*
I have added a Kryptonite U-lock to my defenses. It is huge, but comes with its own mount. Between the two of them, I feel pretty secure. The U-lock attaches the bike's frame to nearly everything (trees are especially beneficial... they hold the bike AND keep it cool), and then I can thread the cable lock through the front and back tires, through my rack and my helmet... and anything else I'd like to lash down.

Works For What We Need, September 8, 2008
By J. Lalonde (Michigan, USA)

We were looking for a relatively fair priced bike lock that would keep our bikes protected while we were away from them. Decided on purchasing this lock and so far we have not been disappointed. The chain is thin, but not so thin it looks like it could snap. The lock feels fairly heavy and sturdy.
As with every lock and chain, it typically only keeps the honest thieves away. If someone wants to get your bike with this lock on it, I'm sure they will.

Great Value, August 31, 2008

This chain and lock are a great value for what you get. This I feel would stop most thieves from taking my cheap bike, as it is not worth the trouble.

Good cable, heavy lock, November 7, 2007
By Gene Cloner (St Louis)

This is a handy lock for your bike, except that the lock is very heavy to carry around. The cable is long enough to lock the bike with most things you can find at home, work or park. It comes with a spare key to save you if you lost the key somewhere. An improvement I would like to see is to hold the key in the lock when the lock is open.
I wouldn't depend on any kind of cable bike-lock for overnight protection. There is always chance that someone can cut a cable.
