Small enough for my back pocket, May 21, 2007
By Fred K (Brooklyn, USA)
|
|
I bought the Mini U-Lock after using many different locks including a high end Kyrpotonite NYC chain lock. While the chain may offer more protection having a lock that weighs half as much as my bike, and requires a bag to carry it simply is not practical. The Kryptonite Evolution-Mini U-Lock, fits easily in my back jean pocket.
90% of the time, when riding in NYC I need a lock to keep my bike safe while I stop at a restaurant to have a cup of coffee or a meal. Usually I can even see my bike, so I need something strong and light. I ride a fixie so I use the U-Lock with a cable through the front wheel. Total weight is very small.
Would I trust the Kryptonite Evolution-Mini U-Lock to leave my bike while I went to a movie? Depends on the bike and where it is locked. I have done it. The Mini is not easy to get off, but of course it can be more easily attacked than the Kryptonite New York locks. But all the tests I have read show it is not an easy lock to remove because it is so small the there is no "bite" for tools. As far as the keys, same as it bigger brothers.
I really like the lock.

Great, Solid Lock!! Subpar Mounting Bracket., February 9, 2009
By L.Boogy (New York, NY)
|
|
The Evolution Mini is definitely a great lock. It's small, well built and is one of the highest rated bike locks on the market. It weighs about 2 lbs which isn't bad considering it's high rating of protection. The Evolution Mini can fit in your back pocket but be weary of the "E-Z Mounting Bracket". It's cheap and of questionable quality. Don't be surprised if the mounting bracket snaps in two or swings around when you hit a bump. (I don't use the mounting bracket because it's so crappy.)
I like the fact that the Evolution Mini won't let you take the key out without it being properly locked. This feature is actually invaluable. You know for a fact that the lock is indeed locked tight the second you pull out the key. No second guessing or having to tug on the lock to make sure it's fully secured. Very nice.
Note: The keyhole can be a bit finicky if you don't insert the key all the way and properly. Just take your time and don't force it or you might break off the key.
The Evolution Mini is smaller than the average U-lock. This is an advantage in that the less space left open, the harder it is to use the empty space for cutting tools and leverage attacks. The only downside is that you can only fit your bike frame and one wheel when securing the bike to a bike rack/object. This leaves the other wheel vulnerable to theft if you don't take further precautions like using a bolt or pit lock instead of a quick release for that unlocked wheel or using a second lock or a cable. Oh, and in some situations, your options to lock the bike up might be limited due to the Mini's small size.
Another feature I like is the sliding keyhole cover. It protects the keyhole and the lock's innards from dust, dirt, ice, snow and anything else that could spell trouble for the keyhole.
The Evolution Mini only comes with 3 keys, one of which has a blue LED to help you find the keyhole in dark situations. I would have preferred 5 keys but Kryptonite does offer two FREE replacement keys if you register your lock online and submit a key replacement form which can be done online as well.
If you live in NYC then you can kiss any anti-theft claim/protection bye-bye! NYC is the only place on the planet that Kryptonite won't stand by it's products which is really pathetic so don't even consider the theft protection as a reason to purchase this lock if you live in NYC. Kryptonite wants to force you to purchase the most expensive, and the most heavy, Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit lock which weighs easily 5-6 lbs.! Not nice, Kyrptonite!
I would have happily given the Evolution Mini 5 stars had it not been for the cheap mounting bracket and Kryptonite not standing by it's anti-theft protection in NYC. (Shame on Kryptonite for such a poor mounting solution and not standing by it's product in NYC!!!)
Overall, I would highly recommend this lock to anyone looking for some of the best bike lock security available to date.

Great Small lock, not for beach cruisers, October 5, 2010
By Troy (Nor Cal)
|
|
I downgraded to this lock from New York Fahgettaboutit Mini (NYF). The inside diameter is about the same size only slightly smaller, but less than half the weight!
Main reason for this choice of U Lock was for weight savings, mounting bracket, color, and small size. (it truly does fit anywhere)
Weight is almost not an issue no matter how you carry. Backpack, back Pocket, or Bracket are not a problem. The crushing weight of the NYF was unbearable. So hands down this is far nicer to ride around in.
I've read many reviews on how hard it is to get the lock out of the supplied bracket. I've been using this ulock daily in the bracket for 2 months. I have it mounted to my seat tube, and yet to experience a problem. It's been mounted so that I have about 3 inches of clearance from the top tube. When lifting the lock upwards it will gently bump into the top tube letting me quickly know the lock is free and ready to be removed. I've never pinched my fingers as some have claimed, or had to wrestle with the release of the bracket EVER. Maybe I got a newer designed bracket? Or maybe I'm not retarded and can use a ulock bracket correctly? The bracket is the main reason I got rid of my NYF (to large to have a bracket) and I LOVE IT, works as intended.
I hate to admit it but one of the most compelling reasons that I got this lock over the much cheaper and nearly identical ulock (series 2) was the bright orange color. I just love it, and it's been easier to spot my bike on the rack.
Using a commuter bike doesn't lend itself to being easily locked up by this ulock. But I knew that after using the NYF for a year. There are a few times I've had to be very creative on what I've locked the bike up to. But luckily there has always been something near by that has worked. If your concerned about wheels get a cable lock. I bought a 12mm cable lock to lock my GF bike to mine and it works just fine.
The BAD things I've noticed so far:
Bent foot design: I was spoiled with the NYF and able to lock it any way without looking (double bolt design). Now I have to make sure I get the bent foot into the right hole before locking up and leaving. This usually cost me and extra 2-6 seconds in lock up time, I'm sure it will speed up as I use it more.
Key: Poor design and not very strong, it looks to be using much less tumblers than the NYF so its even weaker key design! Never close to breaking it off yet, but if you don't take your time I can see how this would snap off on you. (TURN KEY SLOWLY and check for resistance!!!!)
Overall recommendations:
Looking for a small lightweight strong ulock that should last years this maybe the one for you. In all honesty if your on a budget just get the series 2 (gray lock) its basically the same. Series 2 has gray rubber, and is slightly longer (wont fit in your back pocket, so no hipster look). And after intense research found out it uses slightly softer metal. Takes 5 mins from cordless grinder to cut threw Evolution Mini, and 3.5 mins for series 2.
If they come out with a Evolution Mini with double bolt like the new Evolution 4 and NY line I will upgrade that's the only reason I would ever change ulocks because I hate this bent foot! (more of an annoyance then anything)

Don't risk your bike with this lock!!!!, September 30, 2010
By Tod Hackett
|
|
There is a serious flaw to these locks: the keys open multiple Kryptonite locks. I guess they were too cheap to manufacture unique key threads for each lock. After locking my bike up in a well lit area in front of a popular eatery, I returned 15 minutes later to find the lock still attached to bike hoop without my bike. Another reviewer mentioned this problem with Kryptonite locks in Amazon reviews. However, I didn't think much of it and regretfully purchased the Evolution Mini. Now I am out of a bike and stuck with a lock that too risky to use.
I suggest you purchase some other lock than the Kryptonite Evolution Mini.

What more do you want?, January 4, 2008
By M. R. Greenberg (SF, CA)

This is the best U-lock out there bar none. It's the lightest, strongest, best functioning lock around. The mount leaves something to be desired, but you can always be a hipster and use your back pocket (as pictured apparently). If you need a 15 pound chain, why even lock it up outside? Your components, or fork or handlebars could be stolen. Get a beater bike for the city and keep your joy riding bike inside and not for commuting!
One other tip: use locking skewers for your wheels; this lock won't easily fit through a wheel and a frame and something else, and cables are a pain

The Little Lock that Could, June 12, 2009
By S. Starr (Los Angeles, CA)
|
|
This is my second Evo-Mini. I acquired a new bike and wanted to take advantage of the Anti-Theft Policy Krypto offers on a new lock (up to $2000 for the Evo Mini, be sure to read the fine print). Though functionally the same, Krypto has made some improvements/changes to the lock since they sent me a replacement following the Bic pen debacle of 2004. Namely, the cross bar is a bit bigger and shaped differently on the key side, and (this is a good one) the keys are redesigned so that they hang more like normal keys on a key chain-they used to have a large oval section which was roughly perpendicular to the blade of the key, now the oval section is smaller and positioned parallel to the blade.
As a side note, though this purchase was predicated largely on the Krypto Anti-Theft Policy, the best policy is to make your locked bike look too difficult, time consuming, etc to a would-be thief. To those ends, I plan on using this lock in tandem with a New York Noose chain.

lock failed, January 5, 2012
By Geetus (New York, NY USA)
|
|
Woke up this morning to find bike gone. Of course I have no idea exactly how the lock was broken -- but, found the hook-though piece and it had been cut.
People seem to think these locks are infallible -- they aren't. (FWIW I live in Downtown Brooklyn. Perhaps the thieves in your area are less "sophisticated.")
I should add that the one star rating comes mostly from the fact that I'm angry over the loss of the bike not because of an inherently bad design (relative to other designs out there). With a little research you'll quickly discover that there's no such thing as an indestructible lock and that a thief armed with a cordless angle grinder can cut through anything on the market in less than a minute (and this is probably how they cut the lock).
Do not leave a nice bike out over night in New York. It will disappear. View this lock as a deterrent when you pop into a store. If you have to keep bike locked outside for extended periods accept that it will eventually disappear and/or get a cheap, disposable bike.

A bit high in price, but worth every penny, November 24, 2007
By Taemin Jin (Cerritos, CA USA)
|
|
This lock won't do everything, but what it does do it will do incredibly well. It's a small lock, but what little is locked by it is not coming off anytime soon because of the lock itself. If you lock the rear tire within the bike frame to something, you've just effectively made the rear tire and frame as secure as it can ever get to anything. This leaves your front tire exposed, of course, but you can get a cable run through it if you really want to.
There is always the tension between how clunky something is and how effective it is, but honestly, I don't think it gets much safer than this. Chains have weak points, cables are easily cut, and bigger U-locks don't really do anything except allow you to tie your bicycle to more things, which isn't a problem as long as there's a rack around. The insurance is nice, too.

great secondary lock., April 24, 2008
By C. Wielk (brooklyn, ny)

very easy portable lock. fits easily in a back pocket or bag. the only drawbacks are its limitations as far as fitting around wider posts. also, generally wont fit around most things when trying to lock your frame and front wheel at the same time. i mostly use it as a secondary lock for securing my back wheel to the frame with a larger u-lock locking the front wheel and frame to a post. definitely useful if you're just running into somewhere quick and don't mind just locking the frame up.

Gets the job done, August 14, 2010

I purchased this lock recently to secure a new $400 bike that I purchased for college classes. It locks up my bike pretty good and seems secure enough to where it will take a very long time and some heavy duty tools if someone tries to break it or saw it off. I will try to update my review more after more time with the product.

Amazon sucks!, August 9, 2009
By Roger (Chicago)
|
|
Two weeks later, never got the lock. Amazon told me I had to to contact Season's Outfitters. & when I did, they told me that I already had it & I was trying to steal a lock from them!!! Nice !!!
When I tried to contact Amazon again, I found that they carefully make it impossible to contact them for cust service on Amazon marketplace orders. They don't want to hear about it! Take my advice, order from someone who actually cares about your business.
Finally had to dispute the charge on my credit card & order the lock from another vendor. Got the lock right away. It's great (though series 2 mini is identical with no lighted key & a lot cheaper).
Amazon sucks!!!

Nice little lock, March 8, 2011
By GearInches (MO, USA)

I don't have much to add beyond what others have said, but for those trying to find a product weight, it's 898g + 65g for the bracket (1.98lbs, 2.12lbs total). See the photo I uploaded.
Basically, you're looking at only a couple pounds of weight to carry this thing around, which is much less than larger locks.

Just About Perfect!, November 16, 2008
By Aaron M. Ulmer (Austin, TX)
|
|
This lock does the trick on so many levels. It's strong. It's durable. It's too small for a thief to get any good leverage on should they try to break it. It's small enough to fit snuggly in my back pocket, but just big enough to secure my bike to something 95% of the time (those other times, i just have to hunt out another location that fits).
This lock is more secure and more convenient to carry than any of the other locks I've owned. I highly recommend it.
I only took of a star because the keys seem a bit flimsy and i don't like how the keyhole slides around. It's annoying sometimes to have to position the key just so and wiggle it around a few times before I can get the keyhole to engage/disengage right. But this is a minor quibble.
If I lost my lock, I wouldn't have a second's look at the other locks on the market. I'd just buy another one of these and get back on the street.

By T (NYC, USA)

This lock is effective because it's small and uses high quality steel and components. Bike thieves typically slip a car jack in between the bars of the lock to break it open; sawing or grinding is out of the question. The small size of this lock makes it virtually impossible to do that. The down side of the small size is that it's hard to lock up anything except the bike frame, which leaves the wheels vulnerable to theft. An added bonus is that it's lightweight.

This Kryptonite Lock Is The Business!, December 8, 2010
By Super G
|
|
Wow, this lock is just amazing. It is small, portable and mega tough. As for the mounting bracket, I have absolutley no problem with it. I don't know why some reviewers here are claiming that the mounting bracket is cheap. Mine is perfectly well constructed and it is serving its purpose beautifully. Absolutely everything about this lock is well crafted, including the mounting bracket. I carry it on my bike everywhere I go, and nobody dares tamper with this small but powerful anti-theft device. I have been able to use it pretty much anywhere I want, so its small size is not really an issue at all. I did a lot of research on bike locks before buying this one, and I am super satisfied with every aspect of this Kryptonite Evolution Mini Lock. I would recommend this to anybody that cares about the security of their bicycle, and furthermore, I would happily buy this lock again with no regrets!

Solid lock, November 13, 2008

I initially bought this lock to serve as my primary lock. However, I later bought the Kryptonite noose lock b/c of it's ability to accomodate larger object (i.e. building pillars). That is not to say the evo is not a good lock - I actually really like it. I keep my noose lock at school and bring my evo with me everywhere else. Along with a cable, the evo will protect my bike from most thieves.

Great lock, October 24, 2008

This lock is great in two major ways. It's tough one of the toughest, if not the toughest, lock out there for the price and small enough to carry in your back pocket or a small bag. This lock is much more secure than my old lock that was twice the size, which was prone to leveraging attacks.
Great lock, it'll last a lifetime.

Great Lock, but not perfect..., March 3, 2012
By JJ
|
|
I got this lock based off all the positive reviews.... and i got what i paid for:
the good: this lock is a beast. It's tough, small, is easy to locate and makes it hard for wanna be thieves to steal your stuff - regular sized locks make it easier to get a pry bar in between the lock, so this small one is great. Plus, it is small enough and light enough to carry in my pocket or on my belt with a lock holder - this is a very common bike messenger lock - belt straps are easy to order.
the bad: i have two gripes, abeit quite minor, but number one is the lock is a tad tiny. That being said, there have been a few times in the short time that i have owned it where i struggled to lock my bike to whatever it was i was trying to lock it to... but 95% of the time it fits well. i use the sheldon Brown method mostly, as it makes sense to me, or put the lock through the rear stay and a few spokes to ensure no one steals my rear wheel. Secondly, the keys do seem flimsy to me. I am very careful to take my time and not force the key when locking/unlocking. The key seems like it is made from a soft metal so it doesn't wear out the lock mechanism, however, is only a few millimeters thick in the thinnest areas... breaking off a key could be disastrous as others have found out the hard way as this would likely require a torch to cut off. I find the lock mechanism works well, but you have to be gentle with the key and jiggle it a bit to get all the pins aligned properly.
Overall, i give this lock 4 stars. (-1 from the 2 reasons listed above)... but I would buy one again! I don't think there is a better lock for the price. May get one slightly larger if i had to replace it, but overall this is a great piece of anti-theft machinery.

Just Too Small!, August 23, 2011
By E. DePodesta (Chicago)
|
|
I really wanted this Mini -- per Sheldon Brown (bike mechanic extraordinaire) and the reviewers here... and I really didn't want the bulk and weight of the larger one... but this lock is just way, way too small to be easy or effective. It barely fits through either the wheel or the frame and the bike rack - no way will it fit through both. Not good with quick-release wheels! Doesn't fit around the down tube of my road bike frame, either. I had to jimmy and juke my bike up against the rack to get it close enough to click this tiny lock closed around the top of the frame. Um, the metal bike racks in Chicago are thick! It's just not gonna fly. Returning it for the larger one, along with a cable.

Have a few issues but overall a good buy., August 1, 2011
By DeanM
|
|
The Evolution Mini is a good buy for the price. It it solid enough to provide ample security without the dead weight of the New York Lock. The quality control seems to vary on the keying mechanism, and it is sometimes difficult to engage the unlock mechanism. I've used another copy of this lock, which didn't have the same issue.
I have also found out some information that is relevant to those who are interested in having multiple Kryptonite locks that are keyed alike. After purchasing this lock, and contacting Kryptonite to purchase a second lock keyed alike with my key-code, I was told that this can only be done if you purchase the locks together. You cannot order additional locks keyed alike to existing purchases.
To buy these locks or other Evolution locks keyed alike, you must purchase them directly from Kryptonite. Unfortunately they charge full retail, which is up to 50% more than what Amazon charges, with an additional $5 fee per EACH keyed alike lock. Not a very good deal for a mild convenience.

Locked tight, February 6, 2011
By Handlebarmo (Australia)

|
I Purchased the Kryptonite Evolution Mini Bike lock after reading all the reviews on Amazon and I am happy to say this is a great product.
After umming and ahhing between the "fahgetaboutit" NYC Lock and this, I chose to go with this one considering the issues that some people
report about the NYC Lock with water issues and rusting within the lock. Have had around a month of use with my new lock and so far so good.
I am really happy with my new lock, the only slight down side is the size as it only really goes around the frame and a bike rack or fits
tightly around the frame, rim and bike rack. But all in all I am happy with my purchase

So-so lock, horrible mounting bracket, April 18, 2011
By John4315 (New York)
|
|
The lock is OK, but the keys are flimsy and the locking mechanism is finnicky. I am always afraid the key is going to break off in the lock.
Also, it is pretty small, so it cannot be used on bikes with wider tires in the recommended locking method (through rear tire and triangle on frame to bike rack). I'm sure it would be fine for bikes with narrow tires, except on very thick bike racks.
The mounting bracket is horrible. It cannot be properly secured to a bike frame, and after removing it once, the release for the locking tab was shot. Good thing the lock is small, because now I have to keep it in a handlebar bag.

Great lock, October 31, 2011
By SGilio921

|
I ride my bike to and from campus a lot and needed a sturdy lock to keep my bike safe for long periods of time. I just bought a new, very expensive ($450) schwinn mountain bike and did not want to risk getting it stolen. I have had the cheap $15-20 chain combination lock in the past and my bike has been stolen. If you care about your bike and do not want it stolen, get this lock. It is not very heavy; it doesn't weigh down my small backpack. The only thing is that you have to find a bike rack or small pole to lock it on. It will not fit over trees or large poles. The mount isn't the best, but I just stick the lock in my backpack. Great lock... best part is that I still have my bike!

By Jeremy B. Carter (Asheville, NC United States)
|
|
I work in a neighborhood that has a relatively high theft rate, so when I got a new commuter bike I obsessively researched locks. I ended up going with this one since it's barely big enough to offer multiple locking options while also not allowing leverage for crowbars and other theft tools. I typically lock this around the rear wheel and fork then attach it one of the public bike racks. I also have a 4' Flex Lock cable, so if I'm feeling particularly paranoid, I'll loop that around the front wheel, then run the other end of the cable through the Evolution Mini, which is locked onto the back fork and wheel as usual. I highly recommend getting the added cable (sometimes you can find it packaged with the Evolution Mini), as that gives you many more options for locking. For example, I just installed a pannier rack on the back of my bike, and now my back wheel won't fit in some public bike racks. However, I can put the front tire in the bike rack, loop the cable around the rack and front tire then run it to the back, where the lock goes around the rear wheel and fork.
One note: I agree with those who say the bicycle mount is of poor quality; it doesn't have the greatest diameter, so if the tubes of your frame are large or oddly shaped, you'll have limited places where you can attach the mount. Even then, I had zero luck getting the mount to affix tight enough that it didn't shift when I went over a bump. So, I removed the mount and simply put the lock around the seat post, with the straight part (the lock itself) resting on top of my saddle bag, then I use a cheap velcro strap to affix the "horseshoe" part to the seat post, and it barely moves when I'm biking. Still, the quality and usefulness of this lock override that one negative and make this an excellent product.

Great little lock, March 21, 2012
By Wolfshooter
|

This is a great little lock. Not too big and clumsy like the full size locks and so far very effective - at least at deterring potential theft. Sometimes these locks can rattle when you ride but you can adjust the silver attachment clip and if done properly, it will be as quite as a mouse!

Good Compact Lock, March 9, 2012
By D.M.
|
|
Purchased this lock, because I was looking for something compact that would fit easily into my bag. Haven't had any problems with it. Only downside would also be that it is quite small that it can be a little difficult to lock your bike from the some part of the frame of your bike to the low bike racks most places have.. so i have to use this U Lock plus a cable lock in combination, if I plan on being at the place I'm in for a while..

Perfect. Fits great into back pocket, or in my bag. I own two. This one and one that is slightly bigger. I use this one to lock my quick-release front wheel to my frame, and the bigger one to lock my frame to the rack (a bit intense, but bike theft around the train is rampant). I love this size lock.

Great product... but concerned., February 9, 2012
By Chris Johnstone

Hi everyone, I love this new bike lock, but I am still concerned about my bike getting stolen. I have checked the kryptonite website and you can register them to get money back if they do not work and get you bike stolen. Is that the case with this product too, and has anyone done it yet? I would appreciate a comment back.
Thank you, Christopher Johnstone

Very secure lock; doesn't fit all poles; mount hard to install, February 9, 2012
By Robin H. (New York, NY)
|
|
This lock is very secure and I feel comfortable using this to lock my bike in public. It doesn't add too much weight, which is important because I need to carry my bike one flight of stairs to my apartment.
The mount that this lock came with took a lot of effort to install. It wasn't easy at all. Almost injured my hand trying to wrap the plastic mount around my bike frame. Once the mount is on, it's pretty much impossible to remove. The lock can then be attached to the mount.
The U-lock itself is smaller than normal. It fits most bike racks, but I've had trouble locking it to a few poles outside that were just a little too thick.

easier to use than I thought, February 8, 2012
By katema (nyc)

I have a cruiser and wondered if this little lock would work on most poles/ racks. It does, and is easier to handle than a big lock. The holder is a little wierd and you have to push the lock down on it hard to get it to stick in there, not a graceful solution. AlsO I have locking skewers on my wheels so I just need to lock the frame, for wheel and frame it will not work.

The lock is worth the price. It is nice and hefty, and is well made. However, it is just too small to fit my tire and bike through. I am returning it to get the standard size.

Very nice!, August 28, 2011
By amanda_c

Nice and petite. The mount is a bit hard to fasten, but once it's on it's on- very stable. I have a ladies bike...not very much room in the triangle for mounting, so removal is slightly awkward, but totally bearable. You can always rotate the mount so that the lock is on one side anyway.
Not sure I can comment on the security level...my bike isn't the most desirable anyway. But it's not too expensive, so I'd say get at least something this secure- no sense in taking the risk! I like the mini, you really have to scooch your bike up against whatever you're locking it to, but it goes on nice and snug.

Best Bike Lock!, August 26, 2011
By PC

I couldn't be happier with my new bike lock! The Mini is much easier to carry than the full-size Kryptonite lock it replaced. I just put the Mini in my pocket and ride. I only secure the top tube, down tube or bottom bracket, so the Mini's small size has not been an issue, and it's harder to pry.

Best lock for some bikes, August 23, 2011
By Saundra Sleeper
|
|
The mount is a pain but works if you can get it on. If your bike has a small to average size frame and you lock it to a normal size bike rack it will fit perfectly leaving little room for anybody to try and get in there. The keys work great. I like how the key won't come out unless it is properly locked. The cover keeps the keyhole clean. Best mini U-Lock on the market.

Awesome, July 23, 2011
By K. Dixon (Texas)

I had the NY lock but was so tired of the weight everytime I went out. So as a 'luxury' to myself I got this. You know what makes it extremely bad ass? It fits in a large sized seat bag disassembled! If I wanted to take a lock with me in the past I either had to put it on my pants and constantly pull them up or take a backpack. Seat bag + mini lock = happy rider.

Must have, February 16, 2011
By Fozzie66

After using a regular cable lock all my life. I decieded to buy this lock due to I got a fixed gear bike (fixie)back in October 2010 & I noticed that these bikes are becoming very popular here in Los Angeles & the San Fernando Valley. So I want to be on the safe side & not have some low life steal my bike. It is small and tough, I dont use the mounting bracket becuase I put the lock in my Archive hip bag that has a u-lock holder.
Overall, I would highly recommend this lock to anyone(fixed gear riders) looking for a small strong & compact bike lock.

Having my bike stolen this lock is the best option, and worth the investment. It is extremely strong and compact, this lock can be used for 1 bike , you would require the longer version if locking multiple bikes together.
This is also much lighter than the other options available.

Great U-Lock, October 11, 2010
By Kasanova

This U Lock is great but its a little to small to fit in alot of places so I can only put it around my bike frame and not the rear tire I was trying to fit it around a Parking meter took a while to get it around it I even scratched my bike frame in the process I think I should have gotten the Evolution standard but besides that I have no complaint.

Peace of mind, October 2, 2010
By PaulaG (Portland, OR USA)

The only caution with this lock is ensuring you have enough room on whatever you are locking up. Fits better on road frames because the rear wheel is closer to the seat stay. On my MTB, I can only lock the rear wheel to the pole. I do always use a cable to loop around the front wheel, though. Nice for commuting because it is smaller.

I can only say that my bike hasn't been stolen and my bf even borrowed it for a quickie lockup for his Mercxx, and that was fine too. Very nice that it's not as heavy as the yellow one, and fits easily in my bike bag, or on my handle bar for super short trips. For boys it fits in their back pocket. Just use a wire for the other wheel and you're golden!

Good Lock, August 30, 2010
By 0mgz
|
|
Good lock for the money, it works just like you would expect it to. It comes with three sets of keys, and one has a light for use at night which I thought was a nice touch. The included bike mount is easy to install and adjust. It holds the lock secure, although I did have one time where it fell out while riding. However I think this was just my mistake and I did not have it locked into the mount. This version is a little small, but I knew that when I purchased it, just takes a little time to find the right way to lock it up properly. Overall a very good and secure U-Lock.

Great Small Lock, November 2, 2008
By P. Janowicz (Davis, CA USA)
|
|
Small, easy to use, really hard to break lock. The only problem is... it is small, so it might not fit around everything you want. But that is the nature of the beast. I bring around a cable lock wherever i go, just in case. If you are on a school campus like I am where bike parking is provided, it is fine though. It fits around city poles and other things as well. Another downer: all the fixed gear riders at my school stick them in their back pockets to look cool. -___-

Nice little lock, June 24, 2011

Pros: Feels sturdy. Small enough to fit into rear pants pockets. Bike hasn't been stolen, yet.
Cons: A bit heavy to ride with. Personal lock only - not big enough to lock more than one bike (at least not optimally).

Ten months and counting, November 19, 2011
By Alex D.
|

I won't say that I live in an area where bike theft is a serious problem, but if you leave a bike unlocked for more than a few minutes around here, you probably won't see it again.
But hey, if I'm gonna spend over $20 on a bike lock, I may as well get one that's gonna be worth its salt. I do commute up to San Fransisco on occasion, and this thing has probably deterred more than a few thieves.
One thing you should know about this lock, however, is that sometimes the key cylinder becomes misaligned and you can't fit the key all the way in. The way to solve this is to put the key in only far enough to twist the top half of the cylinder and then to twist it until it lines up with the bottom half again. If you don't understand this, don't worry. When it happens, you'll probably be able to figure this out on your own, anyways.
If you're wondering whether or not you need a bigger U-lock, let me assure you: I have rarely wished for a bigger U-lock. In the rare event that this thing won't fit around your rear wheel and the bike rack/pole you're locking it to, you can just lock the rear wheel to the seat post. If you don't think that's secure enough, then you are either riding your bike in the wrong part of town or your bike is simply too expensive to be trusted to a lock.
The only case in which you probably do need a bigger U-lock is if you have a mountain bike, since your wheels are likely much wider than those of a typical road bike.

Nice sturdy little lock..., November 9, 2011
By G. An

Bought this after having used the OnGuard Mini Pitbull, which was a lot heavier/bulkier. Even though the Mini Pitbull has the better double locking mechanism, the weigh savings alone made the Evolution Mini my preferred lock. This lock is great; hence, it's the standard bearer. Amazon price beats the LBS by a long shot.

Heavy and Solid Lock., May 3, 2012
By Tim (Central Coast California)
|
|
This lock is no joke. I was quite surprised at how heavy it is. No it isn't theft proof, but i don't leave my bike out at night in an empty alley. It can be cut with a good set of bolt cutters. I imagine most people would go after your cable and bypass this lock if you use a cable. I feel for regular daytime use this lock will work great, but I also don't live in New York or Chicago where people will watch someone steal your bike in daylight.

Very good lock a little bit on the short side, April 2, 2012
By B1NARY_N1NJA (Dallas, TX USA)
|
|
The biggest feature of this lock is at the same time something I don't like a lot but is not decision of the manufacturer, is just physics laws, its small to give less space for a crow bar or any other lever type of attack out of the question, so I consider it very secure mostly if you combine it with a Kryptoflex cable, this is not meant to get the frame and a tire at the same time, so what I do is to lock the frame with this and run a cable for the 2 wheels. Very nice construction and quality. Im happy with it. Another let down was the transport clip thing, its worthless but I just put it in my backpack.

Another lost bike, April 14, 2012
By Jonathan
|
|
Had my lock cut, and voila, another stolen bike. I liked the lock until it was easily picked off by some derelict thief in a wealthy suburban neighborhood in a double secure garage with cameras. The design is fine (however, a double locking shaft would have made the thief cut twice) with flat key and lock mechanism being smooth. However, if it doesn't prevent an entry level road bike from being stolen, I wouldn't lock up a tricycle with this. I recommend something more heavy duty with a guarantee, the money and weight will be irrelevant if you keep your bike.

Not as good as one might think, March 28, 2012
By Pinger (Detroit, MI USA)
|
|
This was a terrible lock. For one, I kept having a hard time trying to lock it into position with the bike clamp. Even after spraying some WD-40 on it, I was still having problems. Whenever I do manage to lock it into place, pulling it back out became a whole new problem, and oftentimes, it would slam into the frame of my bike because of how much force was needed to pull it out. Lastly, the clamp itself is extremely cumbersome. Instead of traditional screws, it uses a plastic belt. Once I had it locked in, I couldn't undo it to re-adjust. I ended up returning this lock and getting a OnGuard Bulldog MINI TC 5013TC Bicycle U-Lock instead. The bulldog is a much, much better lock because the clamp uses screws the the latching is actually done from the side, so it won't damage your bike.

Too short, March 21, 2012
By Stephen (Richmond, VA)
|
|
I bought this with the intent of locking my bike around a stop sign and being able to lock both the front wheel and the frame to the sign. Wow was I dissapointed. It's only able to barely lock around the frame to street furniture like parking signs or stop signs. I can't imagine it being any good at locking to an actual bike rack! This is really better off used as a supplementary lock. Get something larger if you intend to ride around an urban environment. I suppose the locking mechanism works fine, but I haven't had much use for it as it's so useless in my environment.
