One big problem, October 18, 2010
By music buff (Baileyville, IL United States)

I recently bought 2 Sonicare Essences, one after the other. In both of them the switch broke. The first one worked intermitantly after about a month; eventually it quit totally. I really liked the way it cleaned my teeth so I replaced it with another. Within a month number two wouldn't turn off! Fool me twice, shame on me! I now own an Oral-B electric toothbrush; same clean teeth but with a switch that actually works.

Best Toothbrush Ever!, September 12, 2010
By Book Lover (Sydney, NSW, Australia)
|
|
We've had 2 of these Sonicare toothbrushes for 7 years and the rechargeable batteries finally died about 3 months ago. We found that brushing with regular toothbrushes just didn't cut it after using the Soincare so - even though getting these to Sydney, Australia wasn't the easiest thing in the world AND there's the issue of the voltage being different, we've now been using the new ones for the last 3 weeks. Our teeth feel clean again! Why would Philips stop making these? Nothing else compares.

Great price for a good power toothbrush, September 11, 2010
By The Handyman (Jamestown, NC USA)

|
I have been very please with the Sonicare Essence. I replaced an old type-A power toothbrush with this one. The essence has better brushing action, but the thin neck does make my lips tingle more when I'm done. Not that it's a bad thing. I like the travel case. I really like the non-contact charging system with no metal connectors. A very good, no frills power toothbrush for the price.

Philips Sonicare Essence Power Toothbrush IS GREAT THIS IS MY SECOND ONE THE FIRST ONE LASTED MANY YEARS TILL THE BATTERY GIVE OUT... BETTER GET THE Philips Sonicare Elite (E-Series) Replacement Brush Head, Standard (2-Pack) FOR IT THAT WAY YOU WILL HAVE PLENTY OF EXTRAS JUST IN CASE THEY CHANGE DESIGN AGAIN AND YOU CAN'T GET THEM.

Great Customer Service!, September 17, 2010
By Snibbler (United States)

|
I bought this toothbrush on dentalBookshop in November 2009 on the recommendation of my dentist. It's a great toothbrush, but the packaging was the worst I had ever encountered. I believe I posted that I should have ordered a chainsaw along with the toothbrush. A few weeks ago, I was contacted by a Philips rep who said they had listened to my, and many other customers, and had worked with dentalBookshop to develop ""frustration-free"" packaging for this toothbrush. I have a lot of respect for a company that listens to its customers. Now it's a great product in an easy-to-open package. Thanks, Philips!

power toothbrush, September 18, 2010
By Connie Struckman

I purchased this for my 12yr old daughter after it was recommended by her dentist. My daughter seems to like it and says her teeth feel cleaner then brushing with a regular toothbrush. I guess her 6 month check-up will be the final decider to how well it works and if it was worth the money.

nice toothbrush, September 22, 2010
By web shopper (Columbus, Ohio USA)

|
Very happy with this toothbrush. It felt a little funny to use at first, but just like instructions said I became accustomed to it in a few days. My gums seem a lot healthier after just a couple weeks of use. Great for those of us who have the tendency to brush too hard causing gums to swell, this brush eliminates that.

Not as good as the cheaper model it replaced: typical., September 23, 2010
By Slantfin (MA USA)

I was trying to replace the Sonicare Advance toothbrush that I fried by plugging it into 220V power in the Philippines. That model is no longer available, nor is the charger available separately, which was the part that got fried. So I got the Essence toothbrush. The old, cheaper Advance that I had, pauses every half-minute to let you know that quadrant of your mouth is done, and to devote equal attention to all areas. The Essence doesn't do that, so it has fewer features than the obsolete one. There was a time when products would be improved over time rather than made more cheaply and sold for more money. I guess those days are over now that corporations are allowed to buy politicians. We are here for the benefit of corporations, and we'll take what they give us. I am using the old Advance handle with the new charger that cost me 50 bucks.

Dental Delight, October 2, 2010
By Linda B in MT

|
I've had Sonicare toothbrushes for over 12 years and swear by them. I definitely like the new narrow slanted shaft of the brush head as it's easier to reach back teeth especially behind the last molar. I do miss the timer (30 second alerts during 2 minute brushing time) which this model does not have. However, it's well worth purchasing at this price!

Good workhorse, September 25, 2010
By jpz52 (Connecticut)

I already owned this toothbrush and had to purchase another when the battery wore out. The price had come down considerably since I bought the first one (paid over $100 in ?2006) so the fact that I could replace for so cheap was one factor that influenced me to buy this rather than the fancier model. Also I had 3 new brush heads to fit this one. The brushes are the real cost in owning an electric toothbrush. While all the factors mentioned in other reviews are true, it does collect ""gunk"" that has to be cleaned out periodically, and is a little heavy, overall for the money, you can't beat it. This is just a toothbrush, why do you need all those features?

Without Quadpacer, I have no love..., October 5, 2010
By roto6 (Columbus, Ohio)

I had a Sonicare that died when it was 10. I loved that toothbrush, so I didn't even think twice about buying another one. Unfortunately, I bought this product, based purely on price. I didn't even think to look if it had the 30 second-interval-beep feature because I assumed it did. It doesn't and I hate it just because of that. Idiotic reasoning perhaps, but I know I'm stuck with it for a few years now.

Beware - Batteries cannot be replaced!, October 8, 2010
By JTNYC

I purchased this product at the recommendation of my dental hygienist. The product was fine until the batteries died and I found out they could not be replaced. The warranty is only for 2 years (the product's life), so this is a very expensive disposable toothbrush!

Warning - Nasty Gunk Buildup, October 8, 2010
By B. Wueste (Boston, MA)
|
|
I had owned an Oral-B Sonic Complete S-320 that finally was no longer able to charge so I ended up replacing it with the Sonicare Essence. The sonic technology in both toothbrushes is similar so there was no real change in the actual functionality of the toothbrush. I much prefer the sonic vibrating toothbrushes to the Oral-B vitality types that just spin.
The one major difference with Sonicare is that the toothbrush heads are much larger and more expensive. Even worse is the fact that the way they screw onto the base unit makes it very easy for water to seep in and for really nasty smelling gunk to build up inside the handle. I've gotten so frustrated with this gunk and with the toothbrush heads unscrewing themselves that I'm going back to order the discontinued Sonic Complete and hoping that it will help me to get that funky smell out of my head.

Faulty, October 13, 2010

I have had a Sonicare toothbrush for 12 years. Justrecently, it does not hold its charge. Therefore, I purchased the Philips Soncare Essence Power Toothbrush and found it just does not hold up to my old one. After use, I rinse and clean the toothbrush, drying it with a soft towel and set in its charger. It leaks water and I'm not sure where it's coming from. I shake the brush part to get all the water off and there is still water in the handle, or coming from somewhere. It is very cheaply made and I will NEVER purchased another one.

Works great, October 16, 2010
By Mystiq Spice (Boston, MA, USA)
|
|
The toothbrush is great. I feel my teeth are really clean after every use. The timer sets off after 2 minutes which I think is adequate time for brushing. The only problem with this brush that its not sealed really well. The manual says to clean every week but I feel the need to clean it after every use since the water and toothpaste gets inside the cover. Cleaning is easy but I'd rather avoid if I can. I heard the newer model - flexcare doesn't have this problem but again its more than double the cost.

I just love the toothbrush. when you charge it you can use it for more than a week with out recharging it. You can take it anywhere with you and for short trips you do not need to even take the charger. The brush it self is a good one.

Love this Sonicare Toothbrush!!, October 20, 2010
By JBernou

I was pleasantly surprised after this purchase, it wasn't the most expensive of the sonicare brushes however it preformed above and beyond my expectations!! It left a lovely clean feeling in my mouth with almost no effort! It keeps good charge, Has changeable heads that you inevitably will need to replace after wear and tear, but definitely a good investment, all of my dentists have also said great this about Sonicare brushes!

Not bad but unsanitary, October 20, 2010
By jen (NY)

Cons: The replacement brushes wear out quickly and are expensive. Nasty stuff grows very quickly in the crevices and screw on compartment. Hard to keep clean. Pros: Does get the laque better than conventional toothbrush. Charge holds for a while so that you can easily take it for a trip without having to pack the charger.

Sonicare Essence Review, October 26, 2010
By Dartone (Newport News, VA USA)
|
|
I used an original Sonicare toothbrush handle for over ten years with multiple toothbrush heads and was ready to continue its use until battery failure. This led me to seek an alternative. I chose the Sonicare Essence and have been pleased with several features, among them are lighter handle weight and the ability to actually disassemble the handle and, when needed, to change out the rechargeable batteries. It is easier to use than the original one, due to its smaller toothbrush head. The one negative is the head with this unit does not has its bristles remain evenly distributed, especially near the tip -- there, they elongate.

I like it!, October 24, 2010
By Shoe Monster (The Nation's Capital, USA)

Just brushed for the first time with my Sonicare Essence...and I loved it! As an adult with braces and one that loves red wine, I found my Spinbrush didn't fair well against red wine and food stains -- even when I brushed immediately after meals. But after just my first brushing with the Sonicare, I can see a major difference.
I got it on sale for $60 at my local CVS -- thought it was as bargain, but see I could have gotten it for a couple dollars less on dentalBookshop -- the regular CVS price is $91. Anyway, I think it was well worth the money and don't think I would have spent much more -- $60 is about the right price, IMO. I didn't give it 5 stars because of the time it's taken to charge it. It's been on the base for more than four hours and still isn't fully charged (it's just a toothbrush!), which make me wonder if charge-ability will become problem in the future based on previous reviews. Nevertheless, I'm satisfied and think my hygienist will be too! She nearly tore me a new one at my last cleaning -- she complained incessantly about the red wine stains -- even suggested that I opt for white wine instead...not!

Great value for a fantastic toothbrush, October 27, 2010
By Jay Wike
|
|
This is my second purchase of this toothbrush. We have a family of 4. My wife and I shared one. I just bought one for my tween son and daughter to share. One handle plus two brusheads would be nice, but this ""value"" package contains one brush only. Replacements are sold in pairs. They kind of get you on that deal, but the brush is awesome and has a built in 2 minute timer (shuts off after 2 minutes of brushing). Save money and keep your dentist honest. Buy this brush.

Darn Flashing Light, October 26, 2010
By B. Z. Zukowski (Pine Grove, PA United States)
|
|
I bought this toothbrush to replace an older model I had. Well i should have kept it. On the older model, once you had a full charge the light stopped flashing and was a great nightlight for the bathroom. No matter how many times you used it, it didn't start flashing again until it needed to be charged.
This one starts flashing again even if you use it for 30 seconds and put it right back. I hate it. It's like having an airport landing zone in my bathroom which faces right into my bedroom.
I'm going shopping this week for a new toothbrush and it won't be a Sonicare. I rated it a 3 just because it cleans fairly well.

Great Toothbrush, November 5, 2010
By Beauty Junkie (Virginia,USA)

This Sonicare Toothbrush is wonderful. My mouth started to feel cleaner after the first use. I have noticed in the past few weeks that my gums are looking healthier too, no more bleeding. I had been using another brand of electric toothbrush, but from now on I'll spend the extra money and purchase a sonicare. Try it you will not be disappointed.

This tooth brush does an excellent job. All my life I had terrible brushing habits and the dentist always said I had bad gums, had to floss and brush. Now I get excellent reviews. No talus build up, very shiny white teeth. I highly recommend this.

I've been using Sonicare for years, so this is my 3rd unit. I'm disappointed that this model doesn't have the quadpacer, but the shape has improved over the years and everything else still seems great. Teeth feel so much cleaner than with a manual toothbrush.

Amazing product - like a cleaning at the dentist, November 4, 2010
By L'Erreur est Humaine et l'Humanite est Erreur (New York City, expatrie)
|
|
I always wanted to try this product as i heard a lot about the benefit so I finally bought it - I have to say that i am impressed by the efficiency. First the wireless feature : at first, the brush looked a bit bulky but in fact you have it good in hand and it has the right format. the brush tip looks small but it does a lot more than a regular full size brush. I also like the timer on it that make it easier for timing the right brushing time you need for your brush. Then, I was septical about the fact that the brush can be used for about 2 weeks in between charges so I took it for a trip in Europe and tested it - it lasted more than 2 weeks without recharging, brushing my teeth at least twice a day. the result is amazing - it really feels like coming out the dentist office after a ultrasound cleaning. I wonder why I waited so long to get one - it also helps the gums as oyu also brush them by giving a 45 degres angle to the brush i highly recommend it

Wish I purchased one years ago, November 8, 2010
By magazine publisher (Second Life)
|
|
It takes a while to get used to this power toothbrush. I started using it after a dental cleaning and found my teeth felt even cleaner than the professional cleaning. The easy start feature slowly increases the speed of the brush to allow your gums to adjust. My teeth look whiter with regular toothpaste and this tool than with any over the counter whitening product I've tried. With manual brushing I would find tartar build up a few weeks after a dental visit. Now, after a month, I see nothing but healthy gums and white teeth. The two minute timer is very helpful. At first it does take about a week adjusting to the Sonicare Essence for several reasons. It is uncomfortable at first if the brush wand touches your teeth and the powerful action requires you to hold your mouth and head in a slightly differently position to keep from getting a wet hand or a splashed mirror. I still use a regular brush, after some meals or snacks, but use the Sonicare morning and night for that extra clean feeling and great gum care. With daily flossing and this brush you should never have gum problems again.

Although this product does not come with all the bells and whistles ( accessories) as my first Sonicare, I would not use any other toothbrush. Since I have owned a Sonicare, any issues I had with my gums have disappeared and no more periodontal work has been needed.
