5.0 out of 5 stars.  7" of bright glowing or blinking red -- great design -- very useful, April 18, 2008
By OB Ron (San Diego, CA USA)
I was pleasantly surprised upon receiving my BRT Strap. I didn't realize nearly the whole strap, nearly all of the yellow surface you see in the picture (7" x 13/16"), glows or blinks bright red -- so it IS a taillight. It works great. It's lightweight, easy to use and comfortable, plus fits in my hip-pack nicely. I use it as a leg-light (above my left calf) for biking or late afternoon inline skating. Having a light move as you pedal, and highlight the left edge of your bike provides a major safety advantage. I highly recommend the BRT Strap. I may be buying more. It should make a nice gift item.

Be aware that the BRT Strap won't work until you pull a little plastic tab from the edge of the battery compartment that protects the battery from discharge before customer use.

A few more nighttime bicycle safety recommendations:

Don't miss the Planet Bike Sport Spot 4 LED Bicycle Light with Head, and Handlebar Mounts and Planet Bike Blinky "3H" 3-Led Rear Bicycle Light with Self Leveling Helmet Mount as a combo to mount on your helmet. It's fantastic to be able to point a light at drivers just by looking at them, plus the tail light swings and thus sort of flashes without using the flash mode. These lights are very light weight. I hardly know I have them mounted on my helmet. Most people who see me with them on my helmet think they're great. These two should be sold as a combo since the headlight takes three batteries, and the rear light takes one, so you can easily recharge four NiMH batteries at a time.

If you bike much at night, do yourself a favor and get all three, the BRT Strap, the Sport Spot, and Blinky "3H".

I also strongly recommend a bright safety vest, jersey, or jacket for day and night biking. A good one can provide a dramatic reduction in scary incidents -- people turning in front of you or coming by too close. I try hard to always use one -- it makes an amazing difference -- people seem to have an automatic reflex to be much more cautious and wait for me to pass when they see my safety vest.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  There are better products, October 13, 2010
By Stephen M. Charme (central New Jersey)
I sometimes run at dawn, at dusk, or when it is pitch black. I no longer use this product. Here is why:

1. This product is not that bright, even when it is pitch black. For running at dawn or at dusk when there is some light, it is not that visible.

2. Despite its 8" length, this unit is bright only for a couple of inches from the red button; the rest is relatively dim.

3. The strap often loosens while running and needs to be readjusted.

Bottom line: This product is okay for parks or quiet streets, but not streets where you have to worry about oncoming traffic seeing you. A much better product that I currently use is the Nitezone LED Arm/Ankle Band, which I have reviewed on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This is the one to buy!, January 7, 2009

We read about this light first when it was praised by the NY Times. They were right! My wife runs in the dark and this light protects her better and is more comfortable than any other light that previously she has used. L. Sherman

3.0 out of 5 stars.  nice little addition to any bike rider, March 8, 2008
By A casual stroll through the lu.. (Prague)
The Planet Bike BRT Strap Multi-Use LED Bicycle Safety Light is a nice little addition to any night bike rider. The Light itself seems rather weak as it isn't particularly bright and I'd guess it's only visible from about 300 (or less) yards or so. It is a light red, operates on what seems a watch battery.

Plastic hook doesn't seem too strong. The reflectivity of the yellow part might be better, it claims to be visible from about 2000 feet but I have yet to test it with someone's car Lights.

It won't hurt to have this on a leg or arm as it is cheap to buy. Made in China. I went riding and it kept falling down my pants, so be sure to keep checking if its there over time. I use it on my right leg for side visibilty when cars approach the road. It's good for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  These are a great little addition to your night riding arsenal, June 24, 2009
By J. Silva (Los Angeles,CA)
I often use illuminte leg warmers that are highly reflective(not sold on Amazon that I know of.) But as we head into warm summer nights I use these straps more often instead. They don't seem like much but the constant movement of your your leg lets drivers know that you are there.

Also, I've seen on rare occsasion police officers give tickets to people who don't have a reflector on their pedals. Reflectors on pedals often times fall off and are hard to replace. Sometimes the only way to replace them is to buy a whole new pedal. This is a good alternative. An officer would probably not ticket you if you were missing your pedal reflector but had this on your foot instead.

I don't know if they reflect as far as the ads say, but i've had someone view mine and could see them at least a few hundred feet away.

Other night riding equipment I use: headlight and taillight: Planet Bike Beamer 1 and Blinky 3 LED Bicycle Light Setand the Down Low Glow for side visibilty Down Low Glow Lighting Kit - Two Tubes -Ice(blue)

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Slips with arm movement; But consider as an add-on dog collar, December 28, 2009
By Computer+History/Politics+D.. (Palo Alto, CA USA)
I tried using these as armbands when walking and found that the elastic strap slowly slipped through the clip and constantly needed to be re-tightened. When walking with minimal arm movement (for example, carrying items), re-tightening was needed every 5-15 minutes. With active arm movement (exercise walking), it comes loose so quickly as to be unusable. However, for bicyclists, this may not be as much an issue.

Exception: During cold weather when I am wearing a fleece jacket, it works well: The additional thickness of the jacket means the strap is fully extended (tightening irrelevant) and the friction from the jacket keeps it from sliding down the arm.

Additional use: Was walking a neighbor's medium-sized dog and wanted to enhance his visibility at night and tried this as an add-on collar. He didn't seem to even notice it. With the blinking portion downward, it gave OK visibility from the front, although not directly, but from reflections off the ground, legs, chest and tags. With that portion to the side, it gave good visibility front and back, but it was intermittently obscured by the dog's head and body. The former I used when walking facing traffic on a sidewalk-less street; the latter when on a pedestrian/bike path.
Note: When the collar was set to flashing and visible from the rear, one person I was walking with found it to be incredibly annoying, so I switch it to the steady-on setting.
Note: YMMV: The activity pattern of your dog can dramatically affect visibility--you need to experiment with positioning.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Flashing Arm Band, January 31, 2010

Does exactly what it said it would. Have used approximately 3 weeks, walking every morning in the dark. Use flashing mode only, slips on very easily over my thick jacket arm and stays put. Would definitely buy again.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good, but not bright enough, March 2, 2010
By Daniel Levitt
I use this around my leg when riding a bike and when running. It is a solid product, but I have 2 complaints. Firstly, it isn't bright enough, and the brightness isn't consistent, and is stronger closer to the button. The second issue I have is that the lit portion of the strap only goes half way around the leg, so it is more useful as an arm band. Overall a solid product, but hopefully the next generation will be better. Cheers.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Does the job., October 1, 2009
By eyj (NY)
Cheap, not fancy, but does the job. Sometimes the little rubber "on" button loses register with its corresponding hole in the strap, and you have to go fish for it. And I doubt it's very water resistant. Otherwise, I like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Product: LED light strap, August 11, 2009
By R. Flores (Chicago, IL)
I like this product so much that I think I'm going to by another one. The strap is comfortable, it stays tight the whole time and the light comes with it is bright and visible. I like the fact that with one leg motion I can have this thing in the Solid light pattern. Typically i see that the solid pattern is the last one to choose. I recommend this to anybody who is looking for something more then a reflective leg strap or arm band.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product. Does everything it says it will do., January 24, 2009
By dgloo (racine wi)
I've bought four of these over the past year. One each for my kids, who ride their bikes to and from school every day. One for my wife who fitness walks the neighborhood after dark. And one for me. I wear mine when I run the snowblower because I can't hear the cars and plows when the snowblower is running and I'm near/in the street.

Super bright. Easy to wear. Easy to turn off...and turn on. And that's the only drawback. Just make sure you don't turn it on by mistake (like when you put in in a backpack) or else the battery will drain.

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Clever & Effective, January 7, 2009
By Long-rider (Sacramento, Ca. United States)
A very nice idea to put an LED light and optic fiber carrier inside a reflective leg/arm/neck/??? band. It is either on, off, or blinking.

This is my idea of great engineering - something you don't have to think to remember, it's just a light that comes along for the ride inside your leg band. It uses the same batteries as my Fi:zik blinking seat light and all of the sensors and the main CPU on my Sigma bike computer. I always carry a spare or two so if something dies I can replace it in the field.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Planet Bike BRT strap mulit-use LED Bicycle safety light, January 11, 2008
By Charlie Samuels (New York City)
Love this thing. It straps to almost anything and INCREASES YOUR VISIBILITY TREMENDOUSLY at night/dusk. The whole yellow area is luminous when it's on OR it flashes/strobes constantly. It is light weight and if you drop it, it won't break like other clip-on lights. No bicyclist, skateboarder, motorcyclist, jogger, dog, inliner etc. should be without one. It reflects for daytime use or if the battery runs out. As they say in Seattle - 'get lit' for safety.

I ordered one of these and it did not work-either the bulb or the battery was bad. There was no light. I sent it back and got a replacement-with the same problem! No light! I wouldn't order this product...seems like they may just be very poorly made.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good product, but has a few flaws, February 25, 2012
By MediocrityX (Berkeley, CA)
I used this band around my ankle when bicycling at night. It is very reflective and does its job well. The battery life is also really good. I still haven't replaced the batteries and I've been using this strap for a year. However the light often slips out of the neon case, which is annoying, but it doesn't happen while the strap is tied to my leg. Also the elastic band has gotten threadbare and it is about to rip. I can't think of a way to repair that so I'm going to have to purchase a new strap, even though the light mechanism is working completely fine.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great but must be around a meaty part of your limb, February 24, 2012
By smith847be (Hanover, NH USA)
This thing is mostly great; I've had one for the past couple years and it's still working well. The LED light is visible near to the on/off button, and the rest of the yellow part is reflective.

However, a word of warning: it can rotate. I'm an endurance cyclist, and I'd love to wear something like this as an ankle band. However, while it fits just fine around an ankle and can be tightened up tightly, it will end up rotating as you move. You'll notice that your ankle is somewhat pointy around the back of it (your achilles tendon). This light is stiff around the on/off button. That means that it will end up rotating so that that on/off button is just to the side of your achilles tendon - which means that barely any of the lit up or reflective portion is visible from behind you anymore. This is irrelevant if you want to wear it around a more circular part of your body, such as your calf, upper arm, or around thick clothing. But don't count on it for your ankle.

My only other minor criticism of it is that it attaches by means of a clip, which means that when you tighten it up, it has a tail hanging out. You probably don't care much about this if you're a runner / walker, but you do need to watch out for that if you're a biker so that it doesn't get caught up in your spokes or gears. It's easy to deal with that - just wrap the tail underneath the band - but it would be nice not to have to do that.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Planet Bike LED safety strap, January 21, 2012
By Orion
LED is red and quite bright. The frequency of the flashing mode is too fast for optimum visibility, though. On/off switch is easily accessible on the outside of the band. Length adjusts easily using elastic and a plastic buckle. It looks like the battery can probably be replaced by removing 4 small screws from the plastic housing behind the on/off switch.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Stay Clean & Be SEEN!, November 21, 2011
By Old Hippie (St. Louis, MO.)
Let's face facts...even if your bicycle does have a plastic chain guard around the crankset, your pants leg can still brush against it & collect grease & grime from the largest gear. With this Planet Bike BRT strap, it'll never happen again. And you'll be more visible to motorists, especially at night.

Don't get me wrong & think this will replace a good taillight such as the Planet Bike 3034-1 Blinky Superflash .5 Watt LED with 2 Red LED Tail Lights (Black/Clear Case), it will just accentuate that visibility more. First one I bought came from my LBS (local bicycle shop). But, why not own two; one for each leg? A baggy fitting pair of jeans can get caught on the opposite side too.

I like the fact that once on, you can pull the strap tighter, insuring the snuggest possible fit. Regular Velcro straps can work themselves loose over a period of a few miles or even a few blocks. This one stays put. Stay clean & be SEEN. Light that bicycle up like a Christmas tree.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Value Safety Accessory for Bicycling, October 9, 2011
By Scott Pope (Chicago, IL)
An accessory that keeps your legs warm in the winter, pant leg free from oil stains and your chain ring free of shredded pant cuffs can't be beat, especially since it provides both day and nighttime visibility. In terms of bang for your buck, it doesn't get much better than the Planet Bike BRT Strap. My only design suggestion to Planet Bike engineers would be to supplant the expensive CR2032 batteries with conventional AAA or even a purpose-built rechargeable rechargeable Lithium-ion Polymer battery. With the latter, an even brighter light source could be employed.

The comfort and visibility of these straps are great. In my case, I use them over one or two layers of clothing, a shell such as a Columbia rain pant and then perhaps a pair of Nike sweat pants (thick or thin) depending on the season. For someone riding in a dense urban environment, ever measure of safety is meaningful. The straps keep pant material out of the chrainring, which can possibility lead to fatal consequences if riding during rush hour traffic. I like knowing that if my the battery on my taillight runs out, these straps light up in very distinct patterns as the rider pedals, making it very clear to motorists that they are seeing a bicyclist even during inclement weather.

These straps are highly recommended because of all of the benefits they provide in both the areas of safety and comfort.

Pros
Versatile
Inexpensive

Cons
Uses CR2032 instead of built-in lithium or AAA

I ride my bike or speed walk in the early morning hours and with the season change, it is often dark when I go out. I wear this light on my left calf or upper arm and am impressed at how bright it is and easy to wear. It stays where I put it. This was a good purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  glowy thing, July 26, 2010
By ironman
Much better visibility than a passive reflector, but not as good as an LED blinky light. Would work fine as a anklet, but not so great on your arm if you were, say, running. The fastener tends to loosen up, so I've had to tie the slack in a knot to keep it from loosening as I run.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for Night Riding, April 24, 2010
By Cozmo (Cambridge, MA)
I love these bicycle safetey lights. I went back and bought a spare for me and now am buying a third for my girlfriend.

When car headlights shine on you at night, these reflectors really light up bright! The up and down motion of your leg means that you are sure to catch their headlights at some point during a peddle stroke. The blinky LED light is useful to make yourself visible to joggers and other bicyclists.

PlanetBike makes great products in general, and this one does not disappoint. Only caveat? Sometimes these things get bumped in my messenger bag and turn on accidentally.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  don't pedal at dusk without it, August 9, 2011
By lars
majority of the reasons mentioned by the drivers in an accident involving a cyclist is that they don't see the cyclist involved. with that in mind, it becomes imperative for me to wear Planet Bike BRT Strap Multi Use LED Bicycle Safety light ( in my arm, leg or sometimes i put it in my backpack) whenever i ride my bike at night. to see if it'll serves it's purpose, i turned the flasher on, walked back a thousand feet away and noted it's bright enough to catch your attention. no way any driver will miss it. don't pedal at dusk without it.

By I18n Geek
This arrived in the mail last week, and I was blown away by the glow, the flashing, and the high reflectivity when I first tried it out. I got two straps - one for each leg for my evening commute home. I feel much safer now navigating the city streets. People really notice these things.

I highly recommend you get at least two of these. You may look like a construction zone warning beacon, but hey! People won't miss noticing you!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Makes you visible at night, November 30, 2010
By S. Phelps (Philadelphia)
I really like this product I wear 4 of them two on my arms and two on my legs. I ride mostly in the early morning before work and it is very dark. They definitely draw more attention to you as you are riding. I can tell because I find many more drivers slowing and putting their high beams on to see who or what you are. Also it gives drivers approaching from the sides greater visibility to you. They are well made and I have been using them daily for for a 1 hour ride. Used them about two months now and really like them

4.0 out of 5 stars.  great for biking, not so great for jogging/walking, November 7, 2010
By Roy Gordon (Berkeley, CA USA)
On my bike it sits around the sit post resting on the small saddlebag. It's perfect. Don't have to have a taillight.

For jogging/walking I found it difficult to secure it both snugly and comfortably on my arm. Maybe others have had better luck with this.

4 stars since it's been great on my bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love this--very effective and reliable, October 25, 2010
By Marti (USA)
This is my best and most reliable bike light. I have had this for 8 months and I've never needed to replace the battery or had any problem with it. It's very visible, from multiple angles due to the clever design. I mostly use it when bike riding, but also good for runs early or late in the day. Not sure if you can tell from the picture/product description, but the entire yellow area lights up red when it is on, not just in a few spots. I usually put it on strobe. The push button is so quick/easy, I can reach down and turn the light on while riding. Even without the light on this is a good product since the yellow is reflective. I always keep this handy in my bike bag. Once I do wear it out, I'll be getting another of the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  works perfectly, April 1, 2012
By Colorado hiker (Grand Junction, CO)
This strap is perfect for me. I put it on my left calf below the knee, so that it is facing traffic and it moves up and down with my leg, so the motion attracts more attention than, say, putting it on my arm.

I haven't been able to observe it as a motorist, but it both reflects headlights and glows bright red (or blinks). The adjustable elastic strap holds in nicely in place.

I use it in conjunction with Nite Ize spoke lights, a Planet Bike Blinky on my helmet, a blinking tail light under my seat, and a 1000-lumen Magic Shine bike light for maximum visibility.
