great for quick repairs, February 27, 2010
By David Browning
|
|
As an avid cyclist, this thing comes in handy a lot. Makes repairs quick and easy and has definitely more than paid for itself with the time and money I've saved. Your results may vary on the repairs, but you'll most certainly end up with something to last you until you can get where you're going and they might just last a little longer. Have had some patched tubes last me longer than the tires themselves. Never had a problem with anything drying out but I probably go through these more quickly than most.

Two tips bent after about 20 uses, four out of four patches did leak air over a 2 month period., May 30, 2010
By Derrick T. (San Jose, CA)
|
|
The levers seemed strong but the tip does bend after several uses. Also the patch seems to hold air after several weeks and gradually leak over a 2 month period despite proper patching technique. I find rubber cement patch kit work better than this tape patch even though it's more convenient on trails.

Classic park tool quality, May 12, 2010
By A. Popuri (NY)

These were solid and got the job done. They are very low profile and stack together so they are easy to keep in a bike bag or tool box. Simple and all you need. DO NOT get metal tire levers if you have powdercoated wheels, they will scratch them. This set is perfect for powder coated wheels.

Great poduct and makes chaning a bike flat much easier. I also like that becasue it is made of hard plastic I don't have to worry about scratching my rims up really bad like when i used a screw driver.

Best tire levers in the world, April 30, 2010
By Javabrain (Seattle, Wa)
|
|
Park makes some awesome tools and these tire levers are no exception. I always run Continental tires on my road bike which are super tight. Ordinary tire levers just won't work: the tips are too wide, they flex too much, or they just break. Park levers are the best I've tried: The tips are sharp enough (not too sharp), and they're stiff as steel.

Plastic is so much better, July 6, 2011
By Jed (New York City, NY)
|
|
In the old days I used to use two screwdrivers to change an inner-tube. For a few dollars it's so much nicer to carry something like this and know that you're not going to rip a new hole in your tire when your putting your wheel back together. I changed a tire a couple of days ago and it this tool worked fine. The plastic held up, (didn't bend) and so far so good on the patch. I don't know how long the unused patches will stay fresh. Only time will tell.

Quick patch job to get back on the road, April 14, 2011
By Kekailoa (Honolulu, HI United States)
|
|
The week this product arrived, a friend managed to get a thorn in his tire. We rode to his house and completed the job in 5 minutes. Here are the steps:
-Turned bike upside down and removed wheel
-removed inner tube from tire
-Found the hole (you may need water or soapy water to help)
-Sanded hole area to be patched at least the size of the patch
-Applied the sticky patch. Be careful removing it from it's backing because it is a gooey sticky mess if you aren't careful. Smoothed it out to remove air bubbles
-installation is opposite of removal. Align valve in tube with hole in wheel first
-Push tire and tube onto wheel.
-Pump with air and go bike!
The bike was a Trek about 7 years old, 26" standard style, not MTB or racing type. We did not need the included tire tools, just an air pump. It comes with a little piece of sand paper, but since I knew about it before I left I brought my own sandpaper so I can use the kit sand paper in a real emergency. Sanding the hole prior to patching seems important to remove any loose grim around the hole too allow proper adhesion. The patches are very gooey and sticky. This kit seems good for punctures without having to carry a spare inner tube but won't help if the wound is much larger than a hole from something the size of a standard sized 3.5mm headphone jack.
The tire held up for the afternoon ride, if the patch does not work long term, I'll update this post. Overall I was happy it is light weight and easy to use.

Convenient, April 21, 2010
By P. Tang (So Cal.)
|
|
This is the third type of lever I have used so far. It is, by far, the sturdiest brand that I have used. One weakness of this model is that it's hard to mount tires with these levers. I know I'm not supposed to use levers to mount tires, but I use tubes as rim strip, which makes it difficult to mount tires by hand. Other than that, it does its job at dismounting tires well.
As for the pre-glued patches, they will stick as long as you don't get your fingerprint all over them. They worked as expected.

good value, October 19, 2009
By Daniel Hollocher
|
|
Everything seems to be as expected, and they do the trick. The tire tools are probably just as good as the next one. For those that don't know (it wasn't totally obvious to me), you use the wide end to pry out the tire, and then you can use the hook to hook onto the spoke, to hold it in place. I use one hooked in place to get the tire started, then another to go all around.
The pre-glued patches look very convenient, if they work. I haven't tried them yet, but glue drying out is a problem for me with other kits.

A joke with todays tires, June 9, 2011
By M. Baca
|
|
I bought a set of these years ago at which point they worked fine on the soft, stone age tires that I road on my mountain and road bike. I recently got them out of storage to put on some new WTB Dissent, steel bead tires. Lets just say the tires won. I can literally bend these in half, and rip off all three "hooks" while trying to install a single tire. By the time I was done, my tire levers were scrap plastic and my tire was laughing at me. I don't understand how others are rating these as "sturdy". Maybe if you're putting on a kmart nobby. Anything with steel bead, or a post 2000 road tire....good luck, because you are going to need it when you're standing in the boonies with a flat and 3 broke tire levers.

Park Tool TR-1 Repair Kit, November 11, 2011
By D. Pham
|
|
Pros:
- Small
- Over 100 PSI
- 6 Pre-Glued Patches
- Comes with 3 Stackable Tire Levers
Cons:
- Tire Levers don't hold up well against Roadbike Tires
Thoughts:
You're going to have a hard time with roadbike tires using the plastic tire levers. They are a good width and are stiff but not sharp. Don't use the hook end and take it slow. The patches are great. They are pretreated so you don't have to mix anything. Just clean, abraid, and then apply. They hold up against 100+ PSI. The patches are small and so is the case. A small patch of sandpaper is included. The case is about the size of 2 Mini SD cards stacked on top of each other. The patches can be purchased separately without the tire levers as well. I'm riding on a Scott Speedster S60 with Michelin Airstop Butyl tubes and Continental Gators tires and they have withstood 250+ miles.
Bottom Line:
Highly Recommended!

5-stars for the levers. 1-star for the patches.
The levers work great. I've used them to change many flat tires.
The patches will get you out of a jam, but that's it. These patches are not a permanent solution. They're useful if you get a flat on the side of the road and don't want to spend the time applying a glue patch, but once you get home you pretty much have to throw out the tube and replace it with a new one.

Solid Levers. Patch-kit is a bonus, May 23, 2011
By clorox

These Park tire levers appear to be much sturdier than the Specialized levers I had before. Hope I don't need to use them any time soon. They look like they will hold up just fine. (Secretly, I bet all brands of tire levers are made in the same factory in China, with different colors of plastic . . .)
The patch kit comes with 6 pre-glued patches and a piece of sandpaper, in a small box. This is going in my road kit.

Tire levers work fine, but have not tried the patch, May 29, 2010
By GB (Miami, FL)
|
|
I used the tire levers and well, they work as they should! Not much else to say, they seem rugged and they fit together. I usually carry only two, don't really see the need for three, so I have a spare. Thankfully I have not had to use the patches, but in reading other websites it seems they perform best with low pressures such as with mountain bikes, so hopefully they will work when needed. If you have a road bike, you might be better off going with a glue patch kit and maybe buy the levers separately (they are usually 1 dollar at local bike stores)

Intelligently Designed Tire Levers - Small, Lightweight Effective, September 25, 2011
By Online Junkie (Hollywood, CA)

Brilliant design, makes changing tires or fixing flats a breeze. Haven't used the patch kit yet, but I just changed both tires in about 30 minutes... One trick not often mentioned is to use talcum powder to aid in the tire changing and reduce problems with pinching a tube or the tire not seating properly. Best design I've seen... buy these.

patch sucks, September 7, 2011
By Karen (Beautiful Southern California)
|
|
I got one of these patch kits a while back. My husband is a real stickler for followig the instructions. We had bought my daughter an electric scooter. Now, I know that a lot of people would just get a new tube, but they are nowhere to be found locally. I did order the new tube from Amazon though. Now we had to tear apart the rear wheel completely. Sprocket, brake disk, and take apart the rim into two pieces (plus the nuts and bolts :-) The tire was flat the next day. The patch had leaked. My Husband went out to the garage, and got his old patch kit with the glue, and a real metal cheese grater type deal,(as opposed to the sandpaper in the kit) and his second patch stuck. Two weeks later, it is still holding air. Why go without the glue? Are you really saving that much weight? If that is the case, loose a half oz of weight, or take a sip if water before you start the ride. Whatever the reason, I will only buy a patch kit with rubber cement from now on. These just are more of a headache than they are worth.

Can also be used for self defense, November 9, 2011
By Tony Ramos (Cleveland, OH USA)
|
|
I like to keep my road bike load-out very light, so when it comes time to outfitting with bike accessories and tools, every ounce has to translate to added capability. In the case of this tire and tube kit, the plastic wedges can also be used as kubatons/striking devices should you have to defend yourself on the bike trail. I keep them in my bike shirt pocket for that purpose.

Fast shipping, Works as expected, Slightly different than picture, April 15, 2012

|
Product arrived in time and the tire levers work well. BUT, the two levers are NOT AS PICTURED. The levers with the kit all have the hook that connects to the wheel spokes. The picture describes a lever with a hook for spokes, and another lever with a clip for spokes. This is not what arrives in the package. Still, the product works as needed.
Shipping was fast. Still happy overall. I would recommend the levers. They work and they could not be cheaper.

Good product, works as it is supposed to, March 26, 2012
By sheenapunk
|
|
The tire levers are made of pretty strong material, not likely to break easily, and they can take the tire off. I did not expect much from the patch kit, but they actually work pretty well. I patched a puncture in the rear tire of my road bike with one of the sticker type patch, and pumped to 90 psi. The tire stayed inflated, no leak so far for a week (daily 5+ miles). 4 star because the lever is somewhat short, and you need some effort while working around the rim. Also, I was expecting some more detailed instructions of how these levers work, since I am new to changing tires. But there aren't any instructions. You can search in online, but a brief printed instruction could be helpful. Good product overall.

5 Years and Counting..., March 1, 2012
By Michael K. (US)
|
|
I purchased my first PT (Park Tools) TR-1 repair kit back in 2007 and it has so far been the only set I have purchased. If you ask me how many times I have used them in the last 5 years, I can sadly say that it has been more than I would like. Not sure anyone enjoys changing tires. However, this trusty kit has never failed me once.
Negatives: - Not enough patches?
Positive: - I interchange my MTB with slicks and fatties constantly and without any damage to my spokes, rims, tubes, tires or the levers. My road bike has the same constant success. All three tire levers have lasted me 5 years and still going strong.
- The small metal plate within the plastic case is a life saver due to ensuring that you can safely scruff (to allow for better sticking power of the patch) the tube at the puncture site to ensure a longer but still TEMPORARY seal.
- I have had issues with the Slime patch kit I purchased after running out of the PT ones with the kit, however, I rarely made it home on one Slime patch. This has never been the case with these TEMPORARY patches from PT. They, unlike Slime patches, never slide around between the tire and tube. They hold strong even when it is over 100 degrees outside and with many more miles still to go.
Note: Looking for a more PERMANENT patching system? You will probably be happier with the Park Tool VP-1 Vulcanizing Patch Kit.
If you have never used this type of item before then I would recommend this brand for the quality of the patches and levers. I would also say to practice changing tubes and how to properly locate a puncture along with feeling the inside of your tire. After-all, you might patch the puncture with talent but if you fail to get that piece of glass out, you will be getting some more practice as soon as you jump back onto the saddle. Take your time at first and you will notice that as the days go on it all becomes muscle memory and you can get yourself back on the road or trail quicker.

Good for emergency use, tire lever could be wider, February 22, 2012
By Li (Dallas, TX)

I really like the tire patch as it saved me last time from having to walk miles to home. The tire lever came with the kit have a good design which you can stack them together to save space. However these tire lever are too narrow to be used comfortably. I got some pretty tough tires that requires wider levers to put the last bit onto rim, and the cheap Bell tire lever works the best.
Got this kit over the tire patch only listing because it's only 50 cents more for 3 tire levers.

Great for group rides, February 2, 2012
By Chris Mcnally (New York, NY)

I have been issued these patches when I work on large group rides. Lots of people get flats and these self stick patches make the job quicker. I use the tire levers when needed to remove tires from the rim and sometimes to put on a tight tire. I like the hooks on the end of the levers that allow you to hold one in place on the spoke while you work the tire off with the other. Great tools.

The levers broke with the first use on my Trek. I logged 2000 road miles this year and the first time I had a flat I was left on the side of the road waiting for a ride because of the poor quality of the tools. Save yourself the headache when you need the equipment and purchase a set of metal levers. You want the tool to do the job when it counts!
