Help for your decision, September 10, 2009

Up front, a large disclaimer - I do not own this product, and gave it 3 stars as a 'guessed at' rating.
So why am I writing a review? Well, I thought I'd pass along a very helpful bit of information I received while I debated between this bike light set and a similar, more expensive one from Planet Bike also offered by Amazon. This light set includes the Beamer 1 headlight, while the more expensive one features the 1/2 watt Blaze headlight (also from Planet Bike). In reading the reviews I saw where people had said the Beamer 1 was a bit dim, but that didn't clarify things for me.
What I'd recommend is to go over to the Planet Bike web site and fire up their 'See the Light' feature, [...]. This very helpful web page shows you *exactly* how each of the different products work, and the area they illuminate.

Good value, November 15, 2007
By David Tombs (Florida, USA)

Battery life is good and the whole package seems pretty well-built. My only compliant is that the front headlight is not very bright. It serves to let other people know you're there, but definitely does not sufficiently light up the road in front of you. The rear light works just fine.
For the price, however, I don't think this can be beat. If you're looking for a cheap but usable bike light set, this is the way to go.

Versatility and value, but not a great performer., January 23, 2006
By B. Igo (Geezerville, FLA)

The bar isn't set very high for a multifunction light set priced under $25, but this set does rise above mediocrity in a couple of important areas. There is a lot of versatility, with both lights having multiple functions and the headlight sharing a LED and a regular bulb with low and high power settings. It is also well designed and made for this price point. But the performance of the headlight is a constant reminder that you didn't pay a lot. Only the highbeam is useable when riding at night and it likes batteries. Really, really likes batteries. After just 1.5 hours of night riding the range and intensity of the high beam has been cut by more than half.
My local bike shop offered this set for $15 when I bought my bike, so I really don't have anything to complain about considering I've spent more on a pizza. But the battery consumption has put a rechargeable headlight high on my shopping list.

Sturdy contruction but not very bright, July 25, 2008
By College student (Westminster, MD)

I thought this light would suffice for my short ride home from work every night but its has a much more limited scope than I was expecting. If I could do it again, I would have splurged for a bigger light. Works great and has sturdy construction but is definitely the minimum you need for night riding.

Helpful to be seen by others, but not to see by, December 31, 2009
By famousdavis

QUICK SUMMARY: I like this product enough to equip all six of our family's bicycles with this combo unit. They're easy to attach to the handle bar (once you understand the mechanism), easy to remove, and do a good job helping others to see you. Don't expect to use this headlight to illuminate a dark road at night, though.
There are six reasons why I like this set:
1) LED lights are much more energy efficient than the old-fashioned, incandescent light bulbs I used to use growing up. Saves money on replacement batteries.
2) The headlight beam, when focused correctly, is very bright and can be easily seen by an oncoming car from a faraway distance. Similarly, the red tail-light, when properly focused, can also be easily seen from an approaching vehicle.
3) The physical size of both the headlight and tail-light are very compact, so they look nice on the bikes.
4) They're weatherproof enough so if you're caught in the rain, both devices should keep working for you.
5) They're easy to mount on the handlebar and seat post. I used one of the rubber inserts to ensure a tight fit on the handlebar. The headlight doesn't require a screwdriver to install; the tail-light does need a screwdriver.
6) The headlight is easy to detach from the bike. I liked this feature when I was nighttime riding, and I wanted to stop and take a look at an armadillo along the road. So, it doubles as a handy flashlight, too. The tail-light is easily detached from the mounting bracket, too, but you'll probably do that only to replace the batteries.
I have four caveats to share with you:
1) The headlight isn't good enough to illuminate a dark road well enough that you can safely ride at night. You can do it, but the road will be dimly lit up. There's only one white LED in the headlight. It's fine if you're riding at night on a well-lit road and you just need a headlight so others can see you. If you need a headlight to really light up the road for you, look elsewhere.
2) Both the headlight and tail-light need to be properly focused so an oncoming vehicle can actually see you. They need to point almost straight ahead so the beam can be highly visible to an oncoming or approaching vehicle. If not pointed correctly, the bright intensity of the LED lights won't help you become visible to others.
3) Even when the lights are correctly focused, the bright light can only be seen from a relatively narrow field-of-vision. I would have preferred the tail-light to slightly offset the leftmost and rightmost LEDs so the tail-light could be seen by a wider field-of-vision. Because the field-of-vision is so narrow, take time to evaluate whether you've correctly installed the lights by moving 50 or 100 yards away from your bike, and looking to see how well the lights can be seen. (It's helpful if you work with another person to install the lights, where one person makes the adjustments, and the other stands far away to evaluate the results).
4) Stupidly, you press the headlight button once to initiate a blinking action, a second time to have a steady beam, whereas the tail-light is just the opposite -- click once for a steady beam, twice to initiate a blinking action.
In short, recommended!

Can't be beat for this price, October 15, 2008
By C. Keller (Petaluma, CA USA)

This is definitely made for letting others know you are there not for riding dark trails at night, but, it does that very well and at a great price. Front and back are plenty bright enough for getting attention. Both mounted easily. My only tiny complaint is that they don't default to the same mode one to flashing and the other to solid.

works well, June 27, 2008
By K M K (Maryland)

I've been really happy with these lights. I the front light is bright enough for an average suburban road, and I like the blinking function on the back light. I haven't used them long enough to judge if the battery length is as long as they say, but so far I've had no problems. The bracket for the tail light was strange, I never did figure out how it was supposed to work, but I just skipped the bracket entirely and used the clip that was attached to the light. The clip seems sturdy enough by itself. Overall I'm very happy with them and it was the best price I found around.

Good lights, awful mounts, October 23, 2009
By G. Kemper (Brooklyn, NY)
|
|
Firstly, the lights are very powerful. The 3 LED blinker is much brighter than others I see on the road, it really makes you stand out. The same is true of the "beamer".
However, the mounting mechanisms for both these products are a disaster. The clip on the 3 LED blinker is incredibly weak, I can't even get it to stay attached to a backpack strap and it is much too small to clip onto any part of my bike's frame. The lamp's mechanism is an even greater nightmare. It's unreasonably difficult to open the clasping mechanism and once you do open it, you realize that it is also way too small to attach to any useful part of your bike.
Really, really poor design using good off the shelf electronics. I have ended up taping the lamp to my helmet at night and I have yet to use the blinker as it falls off of everything I clip it to.

Great product, October 9, 2011

These two items literally installed in just minutes. The Beamer head lamp works well in pitch black conditions. I've been told the Blinky can be seen from quiet a distance also. They both appear to be made of quality material as well. The only set back I've found is when you set the light to strobe it can interfere with the computer I purchased (Bell)as it creates a magnetic field the gives of false readings. You have to either not use the strobe or relocate the 2 items some distance apart. Other than that I am quit satisfied with the 2 lights.

Good for urban areas with street lights, June 20, 2009
By J. Silva (Los Angeles,CA)
|
|
This is what I have on my xtracycle cargo bike right now. The headlight has performed really well over the years. It's waterproof and the batteries can easily be taken out and installed. You just turn the knob and put the batteries in-no unscrewing the light just to put batteries in which is nice. The only issue I have with the light is that I often take it on and off when i lock up my bike somewhere. Although it easily comes off your bike handlebars, the rubber piece that attaches to the mount can easily get lost. It's bright enough for urban areas with street lights. If you are off road I'd go with something more powerful.
The blinky has also put up with a good amount of abuse over the years. The only issue I have with it is that the batteries are a really tight fit-which is typical i've found of most blinkies. So sometimes it's a pain getting the old batteries out. I usually use recharable batteries.
In addition to a planet bike headlight and blinky I use a Down Low Glow Lighting Kit - Two Tubes-Envy(green) and for darker non-urban areas I will use a Blackburn Quadrant Bicycle Light

Good for the money, October 13, 2008
By J. Goadby

After a search around the Internet, I found these to be the best priced LED bike lights I could find. The rear light is a similar design to most bike LED light brands, and very bright. The front light is much smaller than I expected with just 1 LED, however it is still pretty bright so other road users can see you. The only aspect i didn't like about them, is the front light's bracket has a quick release feature to it, which is a little tricky and not very quick! The usual nut and bolt used for bike lights would have been better. However, these are pretty good lights for the price.

Great value, nice featured light set., August 25, 2008
By wideawake (PA USA)
|
|
This set uses normal AA and AAA batteries, unlike other sets out there.
Beamer 1 (front): Easy to mount to handlebars with included mount. Also easy to remove as a flashlight. Uses two included AA batteries.
Blinky 3 (rear): Excellent rear light with 3 LEDs. Uses two included AAA batteries. With included mounts, it attaches to the seat post or to a thin rear frame. Unlike the front light, the rear acts as a reflector when turned off. When you want to remove it for security, it's just a click and a slide, and it turns into a clip light, similar to a belt clip.
For some reason, one click on the front light sets it to blink, and two clicks is a steady light. It's the opposite for the rear light. Oops!

Tail light is great, headlight is ok, February 13, 2012
By Theresa Pak
|
|
The review is a little mixed because I really like the tail light but don't care much for the headlight so I'll review them separately.
Headlight: Pros: Well made, solid construction, easy to install, solid and blinking light options are good. Cons: The button is on top, so when i put it in my pocket while my bike is locked, sometimes it turns on by accident. It's also not very bright. I live in NYC. Thankfully most of my route is well lit, but some side streets or more residential neighborhoods have poor lighting on the street. It would be nice if it was bright enough for the streets that aren't well lit. Overall: Decent light if you just want to let cars and pedestrians you're there, but not necessary need to see what's in front of you.
Tail light: Pros: well made, solid construction, clothing clip is firm, solid and blinking light options are good. Cons: Don't really have any Overall: This is a great tail light. I leave it clipped to my backpack all the time. i don't remove it whether I'm biking or not. It's bright enough to let everyone know I'm there which is the most important thing about the light.
Summary: i'd suggest buying the tail light by itself and investing in a better headlight.

great value, February 6, 2012
By Niko

The set is complete everything you need to install the lights on your bike. The lights are bright enough to make you very visible on the road. The front light is very powerful. I've seen its beams reflect off traffic signs from up to 40 yards away. It is not bright enough, however, to illuminate a completely dark path in front of you. The lights are also very easy to mount and dismount, which is convenient when you have to lock up your bike outside. The batteries also lasted a fairly long time. They've been going for about 5 months now although the back light is starting to get dim.
Definitely one of my better purchases. 5 stars/

Good, but front light strap is a bit small, January 16, 2012
By mp (Orange County, CA)
|
|
These lights both work great. The front light is bright, but not as bright as some more expensive models. The rear light works well. They both have 3 "modes" that can be cycled by pressing the button; On, off, and blinking. I like to use the front light on solid so I can see well, and the rear light blinking to alert motorists.
The rear light has a mount to fit on the seat post, but I have a seat bag that it can clip to nicely. The front light is the larger problem; the mount strap is nearly too small, so it take quite a bit of effort to get it on to my Specialized handlebar. The light does clip on and off the mount, so I can take it off for daytime use while leaving the mount on, but I would prefer to take the whole thing off for day riding.

Perfect. It's exactly what I was looking for., October 29, 2011
By Ale

The two lights are exactly as described. Once installed they work flawlessly and I must say that these are the kind of bike lights I was looking for. Of course don't expect the front beamer to be enough to illuminate the road ahead... but it's bright enough to be seen by drivers especially at crossroads.

It is so good and I really like it. The only problem I met is:
The beamer's stand is a little weird, I am using trek 8series, the quick release ring is bigger than expected, so I have to screw it really tight.

Great Set for the Price, July 27, 2010
By Amazon Warrior
|
|
I'm not a hardcore rider that goes trekking through the woods at night up and down mountains. I ride about 9 miles, each way, to and from work on city streets and it's for that purpose that I think this light set is great for the price! As I said before, I'm a street rider this light is perfect for me on the street. I don't know how it would perform in total darkness, but on Chicago's streets it is great.
Both lights, the taillight and the headlight, have two different functions: Strobe and constant lighting. I'm a huge fan of the strobes simply because the eye is attracted to movement and I decrease my chances of getting hit while using these strobes, day or night.
The headlight attaches very easily. You simply unscrew the bolt, open up the ring, and attach it to your preferred spot on your handlebar. The downside to the headlight, and maybe I'm just not attaching it right, is that if you push on the button too hard it will push the light down.
The tailllight is very bright and impossible to miss, but it comes with a cheap clip and the other method of attaching it is not as easy as the headlight. It does come with another method to attach the taillight, though, I've just been too busy to mess with it. It is because of the taillight that I'm giving this set 4 stars instead of 5. You can attach the taillight to the frame of your bike, but it will take a little more ingenuity to do so. If you only use the clip, though, make sure you find a way to secure it because you will take a very good chance to lose it otherwise! I rubberbanded the clip closed. It looks a little funny, but it secures my light and it doesn't hurt its effectiveness.
As long as you're not too hardcore of a rider going through rugged territory that isn't lit well, this is a great set for the price.

Satisfied customer, June 9, 2009

Its nice and bright and it has that easy remove bracket. It's a little too big for my handle but so was my last light, so it's probably just my bike model. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to properly install it yet, as I keep forgetting to bring a screw driver to remove the old light and get those rubber rings from it; but it is really bright and I feel tons safer than with my old light.

Blinky lights, June 5, 2009
By shellback 77 (Wisconsin)
|
|
Ive had these lights for about 3 or 4 weeks and I'm happy with both. The rear red blinky light is brite and very noticable from a distance. I ride on a shared trial with some atv traffic and I've been told by the atv riders that the red flashing light gets their attention from a pretty good distance away. Far enough away to know that I am there. Thats in the daytime. At night that little red blinky light shows up and can be seen from a really long distance away. The town cop here really likes both the lights in blink mode. The front white light does not light up very well to see in front of you but you can be seen from pretty far away. And thats the idea is to get a car or truck drives attention. They seem to be able to handle the rough trail that I ride on also and I have left my bike out it the rain (my bad I didnt know it was supposed to rain)and the lights work perfectly. I am still on the same batteries that came with the lights. I am pleased and for the price I shoud have bought a couple more just to have in case one breaks.

Its Ok, August 29, 2007
By moffatthj (NJ)

I have the Planet Bike Front Beamer...light. Good features: love the easy on/off bracket no tools required. Appreciate the choice of light beams, different lights for different lighting.
Dislike, I can not always get to the switch, it's under rubber and I press really hard and slide my finger around trying to find the actual switch, easy it is not.
I was never completely comfortable with the light out put. I feel it didn't light up my path far enough in front of me to avoid things. It does light the path, but I would prefer brighter.
If your biking in twilight and on the roads and this light is only for others to actually see you it works, if you bike in darkness, you might look for a different light.

Great bang for the buck- perfect for what I wanted, June 6, 2011
By aef
|
|
I ride in a residential area. But sometimes in high traffic areas. This light system is perfect. Not too bright. Not too obvious. Just right. I thought the head light/ and tail light was just right in terms of brightness. Just enough to see but not be lighting up the planet. I only got it for safety. And found it's very practical. I have a $400 bike, ride often at dusk, and I used to live in Mackinac where bikes are primary transportation. So I know biking well. The mounts are well made and very duable.over all, very good construction and value. I think I paid $26 would have paid $50 and been just as happy.

Beamer and Blinky are a perfect match, August 21, 2011

The Planet Bike Beamer 1 and the Blinky 3 LED set make a perfect match. I've purchased bike lights from other manufacturer (not mentioning any here) and the best I've found for the money are the Planet Bike Beamer and Blinky products. They're reasonably priced and have excellent output. My entire family has Planet Bike light sets.

Appears to be pretty good quality. Nice for commuting in a city. The headlight would be bright enough if it were really dark in a pinch- but I wouldn't make a habit of it if you travel on busy roads. Not reccomeneded for use off road.
The headlight does flash (or remain on) which I prefer for my use; but the thing I dont understand is for the tail light, the first click is steady on, while for the headlight the first click is flashing. Minor gripe. Addtional mounting options would be nice, but I got these to work fine.

Great for Boston Bikers, August 17, 2011
By Jordan
|
|
I ride in Boston where the roads are already well lit, but not lit enough where everyone can see you riding. I got this as more of an alert to drivers and pedestrians because of the poor reviews of the front light.
I was surprised when the front light actually lit very well! It's not the same power as a full flashlight, but what do you expect with a single LED?
The rear light is perfect as well and both lights can either strobe or be steady. They're both very easily removable as well, just a twist of the fingers, which is great if you park your bike outside.

bike light for the ride home, August 10, 2011
By Melissa J. Woolsey (Portland, OR)
|
|
I bought this light set because it was the combo of both front and rear lights. I have an adult trike and the rear light attached easily to the rear basket though I had to put it sideways instead of the intended direction...no biggie for me. The front loop took a little figuring out....much easier to put on in the daylight then at night but that is entirely my fault. The front light is bright but could never be used at a headlight. It works well as dusk which is about as late as I ride my trike.

Good quality, adequate lighting, July 28, 2011
By lubger
|
|
I like the design of both items: it's streamlined and functional. Installation and battery changes are almost intuitive.
Don't expect much from Beamer in terms of lighting - check Planet Bike's website first to get a tentative idea of how much light it produces. This is more of a passive protection device rather than a searchlight: makes you visible on the road and allows to look ahead when it's completely dark, but if you are into pitch-black rides, find yourself something more powerful.
The Blinky produces vibrant red which is almost impossible not to notice, even during a bright day.
All in all, a good buy for any bike rider.

The easy how to do it yourself review, July 14, 2011
By Jacob Larson (Utah, USA)
|
|
So I bought this package so I can avoid being hit at night when urban riding. But I also found that you can see the trail in front of you if you aim the light beam a few feet in front of your tire. I wouldn't recommend bombing down the side of a mountain in the middle of the night with the forward light but you can definitely find your way on the trail if you are taking it easy. The tail light is extremely bright. I rate this product great I'm still alive after many night rides this season (Only a crash which was a result from bike shop error in assembly) (make sure your head tube is tightened down so the wheel turns the same time your handle bars do). Install Tip: If you pinch the clamp on the head light closed with your fingers and tighten the threads on the cam lever while it is off of the journal while getting the thread as tight as you can while still giving you enough room to slide the cam onto the journal as you pinch the clamp shut with your fingers you can then lock the cam into place. I found this to be the most secure install. Tail light is a simple enough install I shouldn't have to explain to someone who can ride a bicycle.

This front and rear light set are bright and easy to install. The clip for the rear light is a little flimsy but has lasted for the first month of use - the lights are both taken off the bike unless it is being ridden at night as the bike is parked at university or residence at all times.

Worth the money, but poorly designed., September 10, 2011
By thenostril

|
The headlight works fine, however there are two weird aspects to this design. First, it didn't fit the handlebars on either of my two bikes. Either it was too tight or too loose. I had to build up the handlebars to the perfect diameter with some gaff tape before the headlight would snap on and stay put. Second, who thought that the default headlight mode should be a low-frequency strobe? I can't ride with a blinky headlight. You will find yourself clicking through the modes to the always-on mode. This is crazy. Regular headlight mode (continuous light) should be the default, and seizure-inducing strobe mode should be the second option.
After I dialed it into the right node, the headlight optics proved bright and surprisingly tight. It makes a nice, even white spot on the ground.

Good for safety, August 27, 2011
By Tim

The front light with this set isn't going to give you great visibility, but it does its main purpose; making you visible to cars. Both the back and the front have options to blink and I've found that's all I really use them for, which is what I primarily bought them for. That said, I would not recommend this for any sort of rural path biking or anything where you really need to be able to see what's in front of you more than 5 feet.

have on front as strobe only and with cat eye lights for majority of light. seemed weak for light alone but strobe can be seen way out from other vehicles. good for rear flashers also as most bikers HIT FROM BEHIND.

GOOD PRODUCT, February 28, 2012
By SkunkApeMan (Florida Keys)

I did not buy this at Amazon this time. For a surprising change my local LBS had this item for the same price as Amazon, so I got it there because I just started a night job and needed the lights right away to commute. The light set seems well made. The rear red light is plenty bright enough in solid or blinky mode. My only objection to the rear light is that to put new batteries in it you have to stick a flat head screw driver in the side of the light in between the red cover lens and the black plastic and turn the flat head screw driver to 'pop' off the red cover lens to access the battery area. This seems like a flimsy design to me. I wonder how many times I'm going to pop loose the cover to put new batteries in before one day the little plastic clip I am popping loose just wont tighten back properly any more. They could have made the light so you had to unscrew a couple of little screws to get the red cover lens off and this item would last a lot longer. I'd give this light set 5 stars if it wasn't for this design flaw. The front light is nice looking and so far is water proof (got caught in the rain last night on my way to the new job). My only objection to the front light is that it could be brighter in solid mode. Where I ride to get to work there's a lot of broken glass and other stuff all over the bike paths and sidewalk that I definitely don't want to run over. I had to kind of point the front light at the ground about 10' in front of me to be able to see debris well enough not to run it over. Now I can't see straight ahead as far as I would like. But then again the bike path I take is pitch black in areas. If you ride at night in a place with halfway decent street lighting then this light will probably be enough for you. If money is not an object to you then get a set that has a Beamer 2 or 3 with it instead of the Beamer 1. If you are on a tight budget like me then get this set and it'll probably work for you. PS: Also comes with some rubber spacers in case you need them to attach either of the lights to a skinny bar on your bike. IMHO all light sets are over priced. For what they are we should be able to get a set with a Beamer 3 for $30 instead of $30 being the starting point for the 'less bright' light sets. But what can we do? If you ride at night and need lights then you are forced to buy, and the manufacturers know that, so they can pretty much charge what they want and we will buy it anyway because we have to. Bummer. Anyway, this is a decent little light set for the price and I would recommend it to a friend.

Good value, but front headlight could be brighter, December 19, 2011
By Brian Thompson

Planet Bike Beamer 1 could be a little brighter - does not provide sufficient light to see the lakefront trail as clearly as I'd like, but it is bright enough to let others know that a bicycle is approaching. Good value in this front/rear light set.

Pretty decent, lots of light., November 13, 2011
By Andrew Small

Works very well to keep my bike seen on the road. The front light doesn't grip the tightest that it could and sometimes gets loose and shines in my face but I suspect that's just because my bike handlebars are so thin and I haven't put the padding on right. Otherwise a great deal. Be careful of them cars!

I needed something so I could be seen at dusk during my ride around the neighborhood and this fit the bill. It didn't break the bank and was easy to install. If I ride later at night I would upgrade the front light as it is not as bright as I would like it to be.

bright and reliable, November 9, 2011
By K. Reed (San Francisco, CA)

I've had these for about a month now and they work great. came exactly as described. one thing I like about the red light is that it's a button instead of a switch (like my last red light). a small detail, but it makes it much easier to lean back and turn it on while I'm on my bike.

The lights are plenty strong. They use conventional batteries (AA and AAA). The front light is easily removable if you want to use it as a flashlight. And the price is right. A strong 5 stars.

Good value set, August 19, 2011
By boatbuilder77 (08108)

Appears to be pretty good quality. Nice for commuting in a city. The headlight would be bright enough if it were really dark in a pinch- but I wouldn't make a habit of it if you travel on busy roads. Not reccomeneded for use off road. The headlight does flash (or remain on) which I prefer for my use; but the thing I dont understand is for the tail light, the first click is steady on, while for the headlight the first click is flashing. Minor gripe. Addtional mounting options would be nice, but I got these to work fine.

good buy, May 22, 2011
By Slick

This is a good buy for the biking enthuisist. The lights are bright and assembly is easy. I like tha fact that it came with batteries and ready to go. Instalation was easy. The only thing I find was that the clamps were adjustable for the handle bar but not the one for the seat. The packet did come with rubber spacer to wrap around the handle bar and seat pole which allowed for a better fit. I would have like to see more rubber spacer for the seat pole.

It does what it says it does., October 24, 2010
By Thomas D. Pietrzak
|
|
My first product review. Let me say this, this product works as expected. It works well, and takes standard sized batteries. If you should find yourself needing to fit a smaller frame, simply use some electrical tape to build up the frame until it fits the smaller brackets. Its just that simple. I feel a lot better that my wife has these lights when she's riding in the wee hours of sunlight, as this makes her way more visible, and thus safer. Could not be much easier to install.

pretty good, September 26, 2010
By niftyandthrifty

The price was good and the product worked for what I needed it for. I used it for a single bike ride at night and was sort of annoyed that I couldn't get the headlight strapped tight enough on the handlebars, so every so often I would have to grab it and re-aim the light while I was riding. Also, the taillight was missing the cover when I received it from Amazon. I didn't have time to return it and get a replacement, and it still works fine. Can't speak to the brightness of the light as we rode at dusk and not after it got really dark.

to be visible by, March 3, 2010
By Kenneth Florek
|
|
Uses 2 AAA batteries for the rear, 2 AA for the front, so it's simple to use rechargeables. The blink mode is annoyingly fast I think for the rear. Obviously, as to be expected, the front is the light level of flashlight, not an an automobile headlight. It will only be helpful in total darkness, like a flashlight, when there is too little light to make out anything.

Good, front light could provide more illumination, November 28, 2009
By Y. Pisetsky (Fargo, ND, USA)
|
|
This is a fairly simple and effective set of bike lights to help you be seen on the road. It's very easy to install, and use. The one problem I have with it is that the front light's focus is too small. In order to illuminate a decent distance ahead, I have to leave a large portion of the ground right in front of the bike unilluminated, and the total power of the front light is a bit low (with brand new batteries).

Great for blink lights, Okay for seeing in the dark, March 11, 2009
By L. Emerson (Bangor, Maine)
|
|
I bought this set to comply with bicycle light laws in San Francisco, and these lights got the job done. Both the head lamp and the tail light have a couple of settings: on and blink. I would recommend using blink, at least for the head lamp, to save the batteries.
If you're looking for a head lamp to illuminate the road/trail, this is not the set for you. The lamp does do a halfway decent job of lighting the area in front of you, but there are better options in terms of battery life and illumination. On the other hand, if you just need a front blink light, this lamp works wonderfully. Since the lamp doesn't give off tons of light, you won't feel like you're driving into a strobe light while it's blinking. Most importantly, people will easily be able to see you with the lamp.
The rear lamp is pretty standard, and makes you plenty visible.
The braces for attaching the lights to your bike are plastic, but solid nonetheless.
To conclude, this is the perfect set of blink lights, and a mediocre head lamp for vision in the dark.

Great Bike Light, February 6, 2009
By Mailee (Davis, US, Canada)

I really like how bright this light is compared to my old bike light. It is especially compact and can be carried around with you anywhere. The clip to the back blinky light broke during shipping and when I emailed Amazon, they sent me a replacement right away. I am happy to say that I am very satisfied with the bike lights.

Easy to install, works well, July 21, 2008
By A. Linder (Rehoboth Beach, DE)
|
|
I purchased this light set because front/rear lights are a legal requirement to ride at night in the city where I live. The set was very easy to install and works well. The set uses standard AA and AAA batteries, which can be purchased at any store. If I were doing serious night riding out in the country or on dark trails I would probably look for a brighter headlight....but this works just fine for me in the city.

Blink Back, May 23, 2012
By Doc Jones (SC, USA)
|
|
GREAT product. The Blinky is extremely bright at the distance and gives a motorist a heads up that a biker is ahead of them. The Beamer is great and again provides some warning that a bike is coming their way. Safety is vital when riding on a busy road and while it may seem like you do not need this item on your bike, it can be a life saver. This is one of those purchases I should have made years ago and thought I did not need it....I DID and now I can "Blink Back" to those who may not see me in the distance....Go for it. It might just save a life...Planet Bike Beamer 1 and Blinky 3 LED Bicycle Light Set

Clip too large, but lights work well., May 11, 2012
By David
|
|
The clip for the front light is a bit too large for smaller handlebars. The red tail light comes with rubber inserts to help with different size bars; which is something the front light should have come with. Ended up just putting a few small strips of duct tape on my handle bar and then putting the front light on afterwards. Lights are bright and can be seen from far away. The front light is not meant for seeing the road, but built so that cars/people can see you from far away.
