Paint comes off way too easily, February 8, 2010
By S. Kellner
|
|
My son got this for Christmas when he was 10 months old and we found out very quickly that the paint comes off soooo easily! He only has 2 teeth but still obviously puts everything in his mouth - well, those 2 little teeth got a significant amount of paint off whereas his other colored wooden toys have a much more durable paint that does not come off even after minutes of gnawing. Also, we have hardwood floors and when he crawls around when a piece in his hand, the paint inevitably comes off and gets rubbed on the floor, staining it with a streak. There are plenty of other similar toys on the market with more durable paint, i.e. the KID-O brand.

How about using the square for number 4?, March 24, 2007
By Jeremy M. Christensen (Las Vegas, NV United States)
|
|
How about using the square for the number 4 and the pentagon for the number 5? They could also use the circle for number 1 and a crescent or semi-circle for the numbner 2.
The worst thing about this toy and their clock is that some of the numbers match the number of sides and some don't.

Highly recommended!, July 19, 2007
By A Customer (Indiana)

My two-year old loves this toy! I mix up all the pieces and put them on the wrong posts and she takes great delight in putting them all back where they're supposed to go. This set is great for teaching/reinforcing colors, shapes and numbers. It's made out of sturdy wood like all the Melissa and Doug products and the pieces are easy for little hands to take off and put on.
I had reservations about ordering this because another reviewer had mentioned that the pentagons were tagged with the number 4 and the squares were tagged with the number 5. However, I ordered it anyway and was pleasantly surprised to find that they have apparently rearranged the shapes to fix this problem. On the set I received there is one circle for #1, two rectangles for #2, three triangles for #3, four squares for #4, and five pentagons for #5.
My only regret is that I didn't get this sooner. It's recommended for 2 years and up but I think with supervision it could be introduced from 12-15 months on. By the way, I ordered this with the Melissa and Doug Beginner Pattern Blocks, the Melissa and Doug Geometric Stacker, and the Lauri Pegboard. This stack and sort board and the beginner pattern blocks are definitely my daughter's overall favorites so far.

This is a very versatile educational toy that has provided my 18-month old with a great deal of enjoyment. It teaches matching, colors, shapes, and counting--not bad for a single $10 toy.

Bang for the buck, April 30, 2009
By Rebecca (US)
|
|
This is an excellent toy for small children. It can help your child learn colors, learn shapes, learn to count, and learn to sort. When I bought this toy, I hesitated because I thought it was so simple that my daughter would figure it out and then move on to something else. But I was wrong.
My daughter enjoys putting the pieces onto the correct pegs, or sometimes putting them on the wrong pegs, then looking at me to see my reaction. She also enjoys setting them up on their sides and knocking them down like dominos. She stacks them like blocks and sorts them on the floor by color. She grabs a container of some kind and fills and dumps. She counts them and identifies their colors.
Some other reviewers have raised questions about how some of the shapes correspond to the numbers. I think the circle corresponds to the number one because it has one "side," which is the diameter of the circle. The rectangle has two long sides and two short sides, so it goes with the number two.

More we play, less excited about the toy, November 18, 2008
By Mom A. Mia (Buffalo, NY)
|
|
As I have played with this toy/puzzle over time, I have developed some criticisms:
1) All of the shapes fit onto all of the pegs. It would be nice if the center cut-out was the same as the shape and the peg was that shape too. My daughter really likes the puzzle-aspect of toys and she seems to not have as much interest in this one because it is so easy to put the shapes on the pegs.
2) There are 3 triangles, 4 squares, and 5 pentagons. The number of objects also corresponds to the number of sides on each object, but there are 2 rectangles (4-sided figure) and 1 circle (no sides) and this doesn't make sense.
Sure, my daughter and I can talk about the names of the shapes and the colors. Other than that the toy is not very engaging. It's durable and wooden, but otherwise lacking interest.

More than one dimensional, April 9, 2011

I love this toy!
We bought this for our first son about two years ago when he was around 16 months. It is still out regularly as we have a second son that is about 18 months. We have not had any issues with durability despite heavy use from two boys on hardwood floors - it's not perfect but we haven't had any colour come off on our floor and the few chips appear to be from being thrown, dropped, smashed (as many boys will do) rather than from gnawing.
I scanned through the feedback and decided to take the time to contribute this review because I did not see anyone point out the geometrical attribute that corresponds to the number of pieces. This adds another dimension that is still of educational value to our preschooler. I think that this is pretty cool:
- 5 pieces=pentagon;
- 4 pieces=square;
- 3 pieces=triangle;
- 2 pieces=rectangle (yes it has four sides but of two different lengths); and,
- 1 piece=circle (one continuous side).
I would have no reservations about strongly recommending this toy.

Seems boring to me, but she really likes it, June 12, 2009
By Amanda Faye
|
|
Got this for my 2 year olds birthday because she seemed to be into stacking things. It seems somewhat boring to me... but she really likes it. She definitely has no concept of putting them on their right pegs yet or anything, but I'm hoping this will come with time and playing with it, with her. It has differant game ideas written on the bottom to help you interact with your child and teach her differant aspects of learning. It is interesting to her enough to pick it among other toys to amuse herself with for a good amount of time while I'm busy doing other things, too.

my son & his friends like this!, April 30, 2009
By L. Cullen (Brooklyn, NY)
|
|
At 27 months, it's hard to get children to sit still, but my son and his friend will sit and play with this, faking us out by pretending to put the block on the wrong peg, then switching to the right one, dropping it on, and looking up to us for approval. We name a color or a shape & ask them to point to the correct stack of blocks and say the word.
Of course, his favorite part is holding it up high and turning it over to dump the blocks all over the floor and slide them around like knock hockey...

My daughter loves this toy, March 22, 2011
By Frank E. Rendla

The stack and sort board is great for fine motor skills and for sorting. I was amazed that my daughter's been able to sort them correctly from the first time. Friends have commented on her motor skills, which I credit toys like this one. I only got it because of a buy two get one free deal, but the stack and sort board has turned out to be my daughter's favorite.

I got this for my one year old daughter. She plays with it daily. Currently, she uses it to practice pulling the shapes off and putting them back on. She enjoys it and I think, for her age, it keeps her attention well. I think it will be helpful for sorting and learning shapes and colors, when the time comes. It is hardy and will last.

Fun, Educational, Well Made Wooden Toy., October 24, 2008
By Cousin It
|
|
Another great product from Melissa and Doug. As with all their wooden toys this is extremely well made. It is bright and colourful, and has a number of different educational aspects; Colours, shapes, numbers and also learning to put small objects on a thin shape. I am very impressed with this and although at this age (14 months) my little guy is only really putting the things on randomly I am sure that this will last for quite some time before it loses its appeal for both fun and education. Highly recommended.

Great toy, but had to return due to paint flaking, December 8, 2011
By HNR
|
|
Got this as a birthday gift for a toddler, knowing from personal experience that Melissa & Doug toys are pretty cool. The packaging was not opened at the party. A mere two days later I got a message from the parents saying the paint was flaking off the toy! It hadn't even been used by the birthday boy yet.
I asked them to give the toy back to me so I could replace it, of course. Once I saw it, I was honestly surprised (even after their description) at the amount of paint that was flaking off the blue blocks at all the edges - just by handling the blocks in a normal manner, nothing rough like a kid might do - so, I did something I NEVER do, and emailed the company about it.
The next day I got reply from Melissa & Doug asking me to give them a call so they could get some more information. The customer service rep I spoke to was pretty surprised and appalled at my description of the paint flaking, particularly since this toy was right out of the package. Without having any technical experience in the field, she could only hazard that perhaps the wood wasn't treated properly before painting? She is looking into it using the number off the bottom of the toy.
In any case, she wanted to replace the toy right away, and even gave me suggestions on other age-appropriate toys they had available. She shipped the new toy I chose directly to the birthday boy, one that was actually a bit more expensive than this one it's replacing.
I was already a Melissa & Doug fan, and though the experience with this toy was a bit disheartening, I'm still a fan thanks to their friendly and enthusiastic customer service!

Simple & effective way to teach sorting - colors/shapes/counting, April 26, 2010
By T. Rodgers
|
|
The concept of color and counting can be difficult to get across to a child, but this is almost the perfect toy to do that. Our daughter was starting to identify colors (mainly Orange, likely due to her familiarity to the color of the fruit) at about month 20, but we credit this toy with helping her identify the primary colors with consistency.
The only real 'complaint' is that it's not a puzzle that will keep their interest all that long. Obviously, like anything, parental involvement, encouragement and some creative rule changes will make the time spent all the more valuable.

Great for two year old, August 17, 2011
By K. Jacobsen (Lacey, WA United States)
|
|
This is a great toy for my two year old daughter, she seems to really enjoy it. It is currently out of the toy rotation (we have toys in baskets and rotate the baskets occasionally in an effort to make things easier to pick up and keep toys fresh and interesting), but she liked it when it was down for her to play with.
She is more impressed with the colors than the shapes at this stage, but one of the things I like most about this toy is that it will grow with her for a few years.
Sturdily made, bright colors, wipes off with a wet cloth or a gentle cleaner easily enough.

Not the most durable but entertaining and educational., February 17, 2011
By Jenny (Philadelphia)

My 12 month old daughter really likes this toy. she loves taking all the shapes off of it and scattering them around. She likes to pick up with empty stand and chew on the spokes (and the pieces too). One complaint though, the paint ocmes off of the shapes. Some of them are already showing the white underneath the paint. I dont like that too much. but since my daughter only does this when she's teething, I just hide the toy during that time. Its a good toy but the paint durability is poor.

By kelpiegirl (Tampa, FL)

We loves this toy. I bought it for my son when 15 months old and he loved it and played with it for about 6 months. This toy is great for most 18 month olds and older. He used to for stacking, sorting, counting, learning shapes, and more. This is one of the best $10 toys you will ever find! That said, if your child knows their shapes, colors, and can count to 15 don't bother as once he mastered that he was done with this toy. This thing is pretty durable, the only marks ours had on it was teeth marks from when one of the dogs thought the triangle would make a good chew toy.

A Must Have~, September 6, 2009

An absolute must for those who wish to provide their children with the perfect level of learning/stimulation via hands on play. Colors/ stacking/ counting/ numbers, what is not to miss? A perfect education toy, and great for advancing those fine motor skills. Very durable, colorful--child loves it--mommy and daddy even love it!
Perhaps this is the first time I have actually seen my 18 mo. old sit down for at least five minutes and attend to one toy!!!
I like the fact that Amazon has the age listed as 2+ (I am sure the packaging said the same, likely it did...). But, this could easily be great for an advanced 12 month old; and definitely wonderful for an 18 month old.
A must have!

Nice but one-dimensional, November 17, 2010
By city mama (Brooklyn, NY United States)
|
|
This is a great toy, nicely made, feels good to touch, I don't mind looking at it in my living room. But as a teaching toy it has just one trick, and is really suited to a much younger age range than you might think. Even kids who can't name colors can tell them apart, and very young children can "count" even if they don't know that's what they're doing. So the main, and only, learning objective of this toy is easily accomplished by many children well below two. And then they're done. I know that bright wooden pieces are good for lots of other things if you've got an imaginative child, and that's what we'll be moving on to now, as my 27 month old sorts this puzzle out in about 30 seconds.
I highly recommend the Lauri Shape and Color Sorter as a substitute. There are many more things you can do with that one. My older children all got good use out of it throughout their preschool years.

Our grandbaby's favorite toy..., January 5, 2012
By C. Foster (South Bristol, ME United States)
|
|
Our grandson played with this toy at a friend's and loved it so much they loaned it to him. So I bought him one for Christmas. For now, it is not used as intended - he is only 9 months old. But he absolutely loves the 'rings' - perfect for little hands to hold and bang together. He crawls off the rug to the tile floor so he can make noise by hitting them on the floor. I don't know if it will still hold appeal when he gets to the recommended 2yrs (?), but it has been his favorite for a few months.

I got one of these for my sons second birthday as he is always playing with the one at Child Care. He loves it and I cant wait to see his face on his birthday! Im also a Teacher and I find this to be a great educational and fun activity. Great learning experiences.
