2.0 out of 5 stars.  Frame clamp is on the wrong side, January 23, 2011
By okspeck
I had the same problem that other reviewers had. I ordered the product anyway because I believed that Kryptonite makes good locks and stands behind their products. I just took it out of the package and noticed a major flaw. The fitting is attached to the opposite side of the lock as it is in the picture (above) and you cannot slide it into the clamp without hitting the bike frame. This is hard to describe but like others above me, I realized that it doesn't work. I thought that this was too stupid of a problem to be real, so I wracked my brain for about 20 minutes trying to figure out why I was so dumb and couldn't figure it out. Turns out, I'm not the one who's dumb--whoever assembled this attachment is! I guess we'll just carry the lock on our handlebars or in a backpack, but as far as attaching the lock to the frame.... FORGET IT! Thanks for reading

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Sturdy Bike Lock, December 11, 2007
By Reality is just an illusion albei.. (Middle of Nowhere)
The lock is good but on a scale of 1-12 (12 being safest) this lock rates at a 7. This is Kryptonite's scale, not mine. Since I live in a downtown, sea-side area, bikes get stolen all the time. I use this lock in addition to a thick cable lock. Between locking the bike frame to a solid object using this lock, I intertwine the cable lock (figure 8 style) through & around the frame and through and around the tires. In doing this, even if they break this lock, they still can't ride off AND, they can't steal my tires very easily.
Another suggestion... loose the quick release on your seat. It's hell having to stand and pedal if they steal your seat. Don't make it easy on them.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Stupid design, clamp on wrong side, September 8, 2010

Tempted to send it back, but it wasn't worth the trouble. The clamp is on the wrong side and you can't switch it to the other. Makes the bracket useless. Kryptonite should send all of us new brackets.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Completely useless, September 14, 2010
By MLC
The tube is too thin to provide enough strength against using tools to cut off. My bike was stolen this evening in front of a crowded subway station, the lock got cut off completely. I won't recommend this lock to anyone who is going to park their bike in public space for more than 5 minutes.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  can't mount it on my bike, October 8, 2010
By JT (St. Paul, MN)
The lock cannot be mounted on a bike with the attached mounting bracket in a manner that is in-line with the bikes frame. The lock's main cylinder hits the bike's tube when mounting that way - so needed to mount so the lock alongside the frame instead of in-line - which gets in the way somewhat when riding. It is also difficult to get the lock back into the bracket after use. I tried contacting Kryptonite via their web site - but did not get a response. I had a Kryptonite lock about 8 years ago that worked well. This one sucks. I will never buy a Krytonite lock again..

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock!, January 14, 2011
By Anakin Skywalker
A sturdy and budget lock. The clamp is on the wrong side indeed, but you can hang the lock somewhere else on your bike while riding; when the bike is locked, the clamp doesn't matter anyway. Need to be careful with the key and *do not* force it -- just make sure you insert the key correctly and then the lock will open very easily.

Also very fast delivery, arrived in three days.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice lock but weird mounting angle, July 9, 2011
By Teil (Berkeley, CA USA)
Overall, it's a nice lock with a reasonable price.
The lock looks good, size and weight are just normal and enough for locking up to most of the fixing structure.
Only thing is that the mount has a weird angle, so you have to play with your particular bike to find the best fit.
Didn't get chance trying with a thief at this time :p, but the key looks pretty good for the purpose.

Other reviewers are not kidding. The frame clamp is on the wrong side. How does that happen? It's almost comical in its absurdity. The lock is of good quality. I use a cable lock as well, but together I'm very comfortable leaving my bike locked up.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Security Good - Frame Mount WORTHLESS, June 14, 2011
By Sammy E. (USA)
I saw other people complain about this in reviews but I figured they had to have fixed the product... but I was wrong.

The mounting system is on the opposite side as shown in the picture, and because that side of the lock sticks out further, you cannot use the mounting system.

Not only that, but sliding the lock into and out of the mounting system took immense force on one of my locks (I bought two, the other works fine.)

And, while trying to mount the bracket on to the bike frame, I used normal force with a screwdriver and drove the screws right through the plastic, making the mount unusable.

It might work for security, but unless you plan on riding with a backpack all the time... BUY A DIFFERENT LOCK!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Frame clamp on wrong side, May 23, 2011
By John Pace
I agree with the other reviewers, the wrong sided frame clamp makes this clamp useless if you want to attach it to your bike. You cannot flip it over as some posters have replied. The way the U-lock fits into the lock bar with a curved end will not allow the attachment bracket to slide over it (or the long way around the U-end) as it is hard plastic.

It's not worth sending back, but I will call the number listed on the manual to 'complain'. I wish I would have read through the reviews before purchasing.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good for the price, March 11, 2010
By M. Roth (Manhattan)
the lock is not super wide so it is a little hard to get it around the front wheel, the frame, and a pole ..... but I can and I do. The lock mechanism gets a little stuck sometimes, which is annoying. Still best deal around on a brand new U lock. (It was around $15 or $16 when I bought it )

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Theft deterrent for a great price, August 25, 2011
By S. Carlson (Huntington Beach, CA, USA)
No bicycle lock is going to keep your bike safe from determined thieves, but a beefy item like this will certainly keep the honest thieves honest. It's a little heavy for my preference, but my wife really wanted something substantial to secure her new bike. This does have a nice little bracket that holds the lock to the bike frame while riding, and the keys are flat and unobtrusive so they can be tucked away in a pocket or bag. I'd have to say this is a pretty cheap way to have a little peace of mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good, sturdy lock. Clamp on correct side! Definitely worth the price!, September 12, 2011
By Husky (TN)
I guess they finally fixed the clamp problem, because I was able to use it the intended way. I only use the clamp when I don't have my backpack on me, so I can't speak for longevity. It does seem to be sturdy, though. The barrel turns freely when I operate the lock, given that you've inserted the key properly. No issues there. My model looks slightly different than the one pictured, and came with longer oval keys that have a solid feel to them. The lock itself is relatively heavy but that's to be expected. MUCH better than the Wally World locks. I feel confident leaving my bike alone with this lock, however, I do live in an area where bikes are not stolen that often, and I also never leave my bike for periods longer than 2-3 hours. You may want a stronger one if you live in a bigger city or leave your bike outside. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS pair a U-lock with a chain or wire lock with a separate padlock when leaving your bike for extended periods of time. I cannot begin to describe the way people at my university lock their bikes up. Despite having decent locks, they somehow manage to make it scream "PLEASE STEAL ME". Please don't be careless; you're the only one that will get burned from it. This lock is definitely worth the price. Very satisfied!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Hassle to turn the keys and broken after 20 month, December 1, 2011
By Kreanu (Twin Cities, MN)
I have this lock for about 20 months. It was alright when I first got it. Then it started to get hard to turn the key for reasons I just figured out about 2 months ago. I normally hang the lock on the docking device as indicated in the second picture of this product. When it's hung on the dock, the dock will push the little plastic piece at the end of U shaped metal towards the metal bar which has the lock mechanism. It's not easy to see the problem from the first picture because it's somewhat deceiving. The keyhole is actually on the side that's closer to the docking apparatus for which you can look at the second picture where the lock is hung on the bike. The problem of docking apparatus pinching the plastic piece was that the plastic piece would then force the U metal away from the lock mechanism. The lock mechanism is a small flat metal rotating in and out a crevice. The pinching will cause the small flat metal to deviate from the crevice vertically and then you end up fighting hard to open the lock. The fix is easy. Push the plastic piece back and open the lock, but it's just unpleasant that you have to do it every other day.
I thought I was smart to figure this out and the smartness stopped two month after when I could no longer open the lock. It seems something is protruding from the bottom of the keyhole and now my bike is locked on the bike rack and I am wondering how to get it out.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Effective but awkward to use, October 2, 2011
By JW (Las Vegas, NV)
This bike lock is sturdy and strong but not too heavy to carry in a bracket on your bike. The bracket socket on the lock is in a weird place that makes it hard to anchor it straight on your bike. I settled for a creative solution that most people can figure out given a little thought and time. The lock is hard to remove when you unlock it but that may be for security reasons. Just don't expect this one to come off as quickly as some other U-locks when you unlock it. But it gets the job done and is secure.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Better design, better security, better solution., October 7, 2011
By Robby Revue
If you care enough to buy a lock for your bike in the first place, then you should care enough to get a lock that works better and easier than another lock, on top of giving you great security, so you will get into a habit of employing it all the time and not be lazy because the lock takes more effort to use. Lazy? Yes, and laziness is the biggest reason to not use a lock you bought to protect your bike. Just having a strong U-lock isn't good enough. You have to use it. An unused lock is the worst security feature a lock can have. Easier, with top security features is just better. You'll use this Kryptonite lock and that will save your bike more times than you will ever know. I put it in the same realm as building a better mouse trap.

Having returned an On-Guard 5510 Mini U-Lock with Additional Security Cable (4 feet) to Wal-Mart where I had bought that lock, I chose this Kryptonite lock instead because, although On-Guard claims to be "obsessed" about security they sure aren't when it comes to product design. Bottom line is if you have a lock that is not as easy for you to use, then you will of course use it less and take a bigger risk with your bike becoming a crime statistic (stolen).

Amazon had Wal-Mart beat on price for this Kryptonite lock, too. Comparing Amazon's service to Wal-Mart's wouldn't really help, since Wal-Mart forgot what service is years ago, and Amazon has consistently provided me with better service in all areas for many years now. Shipping for this lock, along with Avenir Tightrope Cables (12mm / 7 feet) - to make securing my bike a more complete security system for my wheels and saddle along with making more work for a would-be thief - and a Bell Dawn Patrol LED Headlight took just 4 days using Super Saver shipping, and you can't beat that. My Planet Bike Blinky "3" 3-Led Rear Bicycle Light, that I purchased at the same time, was packaged and sent along separately, but still arrived on the same day. Look for those reviews from me, too, should you like this one.

This U-lock is very tough and I don't think you could easily find something that would cut through it, at least not something you could easily carry with you and go unnoticed. Seems more like someone would have to use a diamond wheeled grinder type of cutter with a power drill, at the very least, and that sure wouldn't be discrete or fail to draw attention. So while someone would not be able to easily steal your bike with this lock - if properly secured - for errands, short trips to a store, or in a busier type of place where you could even leave your bike all day, it won't be for you if you leave your bike in high-crime areas. I wouldn't trust this lock to be the only means of securing your bike at night for a long period of time or in an area with few people around and little activity during the day, as people being around and seeing your bike is one step in your security plan to make stealing your bike a less attractive option for a thief.

One thing I really like about this Kryptonite lock over the On-Guard U-lock is that while On-Guard uses a dual, straight bayonet system on both sides of the locking arm to attach to the shackle, this Kryptonite U-Lock has an easier and better system to attach the locking arm onto the shackle. It's not dual, straight bayonet on both sides. One side of the locking arm of this Kryptonite lock has a short, angled part of the locking arm that helps you to guide and fit the locking arm into the shackle for that side, then you just swing the locking arm around the frame of your bike and a stationary object and clasp the other side of the locking arm (which has a straight bayonet fitting) into the other side of the shackle, then lock it by turning the key.

To me, Kryptonite's is just a better design that makes attaching the locking arm to the shackle a little easier in warm, dry conditions and especially easier in cold, wet conditions. It also makes it easier to attach the locking arm to the shackle by obtaining a little leverage, if needed, for those times when you have to use a stationary object (like a pole) that is larger in diameter than some others when you lock up your bike. The dual, straight bayonet system for the locking arm with On-Guard's lock makes you press down and use compression alone (your muscle strength) for attaching the locking arm to the shackle. Kryptonite's design, with one side of the actual locking piece of the arm at an angle, lets you lock that side in and pull as well as push down on the locking arm if you need to.

As luck would have it, since I have received this lock the weather has taken a turn from nice and warm to colder than a mother-in-law's kiss, with ongoing cold rain or drizzle and I have really found out just how much better Kryptonite's design and locking system works, which means it just makes it that much easier to lock up my bike. Locking up my bike properly is a habit I don't want to break. If a lock is more of a pain in the butt for me to use, like the dual, straight bayonet system On-Guard uses in their U-lock design, then I'm less likely to use it all the time, which means a thief will be more likely to take my bike. And that would make me sad.

In short, you spent your good money on your bicycle purchase. Spend a little more and get a good U-lock like this one, or a stronger one if your area is more of a high-crime/high risk area, and use it along with a good cable like the Avenir Tightrope Cables (12mm / 7 feet). Little out-of-pocket cash, but you will have a security system that will intimidate most thieves, so the opportunists will give up without even trying and the more determined thief will move on to an easier target.

For those interested in Kryptonite's Anti-Theft Protection offer, yes, you can register the lock and your bike with Kryptonite. You must verify your bike's serial number and purchase price with Kryptonite plus pay a yearly fee, along with other requirements and restrictions. It is all detailed in the enclosed package with the lock, and is available on Kryptonite's website if you want to know more.

This isn't the strongest Kryptonite lock, but should serve you well if you're not leaving it out for long periods of time. The key fits neatly with the rest of your house and car keys, which means you're a lot less likely to lose them.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Mechanism sticks despite maintenance, June 20, 2011
By M. Eldridge
This lock worked beautifully for the 1st couple of weeks (so much so that I ordered another for my girlfriend). However, shortly afterwards the lock became really awkward - the key wouldn't turn at all smoothly. It now requires a lot of jiggling/shaking/pulling/twisting to get the darn thing open (closing is fine). The one I bought for my girlfriend followed exactly the same time course as mine (i.e. fine for a couple of weeks then a nightmare to use).

I HAVE tried oiling and greasing the locking mechanisms to restore smoothness of operation, but this only alleviates the problem for a couple of days at best (and even then it's nowhere near as smooth as it once was). Steer clear of this model, and any other with the same mechanism.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Value, March 7, 2011
By Lambert
Pretty durable lock for under 20 bucks. Nice design in that it the back hooks on to the bracket. Key doesn't get stuck like Master Lock's. I don't use the lock holder, so I can't comment on that. But the lock itself does have a pretty nice weight to it; overall, it'd be my choice of lock for a cheaper bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty good., September 13, 2010
By alexander contreras (PHOENIX, AZ, US)
It's a pretty good lock. Feels secure, the only reason it lost a star is because the lock is kinda finicky, you have to insert the key just right and sometimes try several times to open and close it. It can be kind of frustrating if you're in a hurry, but not a huge deal. It's still a quality product. I've been using it every day for about 2-3 months now as my back up and travel lock. It probably gets locked and unlocked about 3-5 times per day as I go to the store and class. I use a huge on guard chain for home and work.

Solid lock. My only complaints is that sometimes the key is hard to turn completely around to unlock, it really has to be perfectly inserted in order to turn. The hoop is a little small to get around a wide armed bike rack. Sits on the bike well.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Large Lock works for a large bike, April 25, 2012
By DIYAJ
I've had this lock for about a month and so far I've still got a bike. Like some of the other reviewers, I couple this lock with a thick cable to wrap around the frame/tires. It's big enough for my large framed bike and I like that it comes with a frame mount for the lock. Beware though, that red button you see in the product pic is meant to release the lock from the mount, but it's super flimsy and is hardly functional. Also, other reviewers mentioned that the frame mount was attached incorrectly (backwards) however I haven't found that to be the case with my lock.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good value, March 24, 2012
By Brian
Got these for our kids to lock their bikes up at school. Work good and not to big. They have BMX style bikes so the bracket doesn't fit anywhere that isn't in the way, so they just put them in their backpacks.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock, March 22, 2012

Great lock. The whole lock is sturdy and easy to install. Sometimes, it's a little hard to lock it up and takes a few time before doing so.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Clamp not on wrong side, May 2, 2012
By Matt
Tons of people are saying that the clamp is on the wrong side, but it's not. The clamp spins around so you can find a good position for it. If it doesn't move just loosen the Phillips head screw that holds it in place, and then tighten it back up once you are done.
