  • Utilizes ErgoDial fit system and cam-lock levers
  • 23 vents allow cool air in and warm air out
  • Weighs 252 grams and comes in Universal Adult size
  • Complies with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's safety standards for bicycle helmets
Product Description:
Like the rising sun, the new Solar lights up the Bell line. Features Bell's ErgoDial fit system, Fusion In-Mold construction, Cam-lock levers for easy strap adjustment and 23 ventilation ports to keep you cool.
The Bell Solar Bike Helmet is constructed with a fusion in-mold microshell, which utilizes the process of bonding the helmet's microshell to its EPS foam layer, rather than forming the two separately and taping them together later, to provide a sturdier, more solid helmet. This helmet features Bell's ErgoDial fit system to deliver an easy one-hand adjustment with the press of a button and slide of the dial for a firm, snug and comfortable stability.

The Solar also features cam-lock levers that make it easy to adjust the straps around your ears. For your comfort, this bicycle helmet includes 23 vents that allow cool, fresh air in and warm air out. The Solar helmet comes in Bell's Universal Adult size (54-61cm), weighs 252 grams, and complies with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's safety standards for bicycle helmets.

Helmet Tips--You Should Always...

  • Wear a helmet when you ride
  • Wear your helmet low in the front to protect the forehead
  • Fasten your buckle and tighten your chin strap
  • Check your adjustments every time you wear your helmet
  • Inspect your helmet regularly for signs of wear or damage
  • Wear a helmet designed for your activity

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Saved my bacon!, December 10, 2008
By JoeWillie
I didn't read all the previous reviews but most discussed the fit. This helmet fit fine for me as well, but more importantly it works. I had a pretty bad accident with bone breaks (collar bone, multiple ribs)requiring surgery and felt a solid head thump on concrete. The helmet compressed and cracked but I had absolutely no head injury. Without a helmet I expect they would have had to wake me up!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I'm impressed!, July 29, 2007
By G. Kruse (West Des Moines, IA United States)
I didn't have great confidence in the "universal fit" system - until I tried it. I have owned higher end helmets from Bell and Giro, and this fits as well as any I've owned. I can't see spending $100 for a helmet when this Bell does as well for a third of that.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  It fits!, May 12, 2007
By Donna Scott (Glenview, Illinois)
After many helmets that wobbled back and forth on my head, this helmet has a racketing device in the headliner to tighten up the fit. It stays where I put it and protects my head.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  nice helmet but not for huge heads, October 23, 2007
By C. Hug (Boston, MA)
I have a large head. I was a little skeptical about the universal fit, but it does adjust so that it can fit most heads. For my head, I would prefer that the helmet was just a bit larger (the helmet is the constraint, not the adjustable inside). But, while at times it seems bit tight, I've decided to keep it as the alternatives seem to cost twice as much.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Why pay more?, July 30, 2010
By Dan Wildhirt (Colorado)
As an avid cyclist and racer for 30-plus years, I've long since outgrown the need to be seen using the latest gear endorsed by Lance or Alberto or Andy. Let's face it: A big reason for the high cost of many cycling accessories is marketing and sponsorships. Products like helmets are little more than commodities, so manufacturers have to differentiate their high-end brain buckets by paying big-name riders to wear them.

Helmet technology has evolved to the point where there's little functional difference between entry-level models and the top of the line ones. They all consist of a shell, nylon webbing and some EPS foam. And while the more costly units may carry stickers signifying compliance with multiple certification standards (Snell, ASTM, CPSC, etc.), keep in mind that manufacturers are obligated to pay for the costs of testing along with (in many cases) royalty fees that grant them the privilege of applying the stickers of certain privately-funded safety foundations. A given helmet may well comply with the latest Snell standard, but unless the manufacturer pays Snell's fees, they can't say it does.

So that brings us to the Bell Solar. I've worn many Bell helmets (and crashed a few) over the years and have never found their protection to be lacking in any area. I originally bought a Solar as the first adult-sized helmet for my still-growing daughter, so I didn't want to spend too much on one that might well end up being replaced in a year. Once it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the adjustable-fit system would accommodate even my 60cm melon, and it was a couple ounces lighter than the dated Giro I'd been using. So I bought another one for myself. After more than 2000 miles of training, racing and touring (including 540 miles on the week-long Ride The Rockies), I have no complaints at all. The Solar fits well and has sufficient airflow to keep my head cool even when racing a criterium on a 90-degree day. Plus, its ridiculously low price means I have money left over to spend on other stuff for my bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice fit, good price, April 2, 2008
By ejt (Marion, IA United States)
I was skeptical of the one-size fits all, as these rarely fit me, but I am happy to say the helmet fits fine on my 7 7/8 hat size head. It is just a tiny bit snug, but does the job. The price was right at twenty bucks for my blue and white helmet.

The build quality is excellent (better than my Giro Mojave that was falling apart). I hope to never have to use it, but it should hold up well. It is comfortable for my 11 mile bike ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Helmet!, September 5, 2007

Purchased the Bell Solar Bike Helmet and it fit comfortably. Easy to adjust once I figured out how the straps worked. Recommend this product and company to anyone interested in buying a good reasonably priced helmet.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid, lightweight, unique, February 21, 2007

Recommend. It's a helmet, and functions fine as such. The extra pizazz of the aesthetics and easy adjustment put it over the top. I really like it, and get compliments... which says a lot.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Broke on second use, July 25, 2009
By Anikin
The price is right, but the dial-fit wheel started to slip, and wouldn't tighten properly the second time I used it. That part is very flimsy and not well-designed.
The helmet has good cooling.
Seems to leave way too much of the back of the head exposed. I understand that the pointy part in the back will keep your head from hitting the ground if you fall backwards. However, if something were to hit you in the lower part of the back of the head - such as a truck mirror for example - there would be nothing to stop it except that flimsy, hard dial-fit buckle.
The chin strap fits uncomfortably, if you adjust it to hold the helmet securely. It really digs into that area where your jaw meets your neck. If you loosen it, then the helmet doesn't seem to be on securely.
Looks too bulky on my head.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Most bang for the buck!, October 12, 2008
By John B. Maddox (Pensacola, Florida)
I ordered one of these to try it out and was so pleased that we now have "3" of them and all who use them like them. Very cool in the summer, snug secure fit, and lightweight make them our choice here in Pensacola. The price was also a factor, but as I stated ,"the most bang for the buck". I dragrace and have worn Bell helmets for years so I knew they were top-notch. Highly recommended...Brent

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I like it!, April 2, 2011
By bornforwater
This helmet's a little wonky to adjust, but once it's done and fits on your head, you'll like it too, I think.

An added bonus is that the obnoxious 'BELL' stickers (the white and red ones) can easily be peeled off, leaving you a neat, cheap helmet- without you being a cycling billboard everywhere you go. Hint: Pull them off slowly to reduce the amount of sticky residue left behind. Then remove the rest with a small amount of rubbing alcohol!

I like this helmet. It accomplishes everything I want accomplished, and doesn't look half bad, either.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Comfortable for people with larger heads, June 21, 2011
By David Wesley (Boston)
Finding a comfortable helmet can be difficult. I wear a hat size XL and many helmets are tight and uncomfortable, especially some European brands. This helmet is probably the most comfortable I have owned. Also, more expensive helmets are not safer. They are just more aerodynamic for competitive racers. For everyone else, the cheaper helmets are just as safe and comfortable as the expensive brands.

Bought this helmet sight unseen and have to admit I was a little concerned because of the low price, but when it arrived I was pleasantly surprised. It fits great and looks great. I used it for a triathlon in June and will be wearing it whenever I ride. Good price too.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good helmet for the price, March 22, 2011
By college_cyclist121
I bought this helmet after I bought my road bike. I sort of bought this helmet in a rush and didn't really care how it looked on my big head. The fit is ok, but with this price point you can't really complain. This helmet also saved me twice as I have hit on my head on concrete than gravel. The helmet now has a dent and a crack now, but helped protect my head. Now I've moved on to a more expensive helmet (Lazer Genesis, btw awesome helmet) and if money is not a problem for you, I would buy a more expensive helmet that fits your head better. But if money is a problem, this helmet will do you just fine.

I was a little nervous ordering this helmet because I have a huge noggin (7 5/8 hat size), but it fits great with room to spare! It's a comfortable fit and the straps/buckle seem to be pretty good quality. Good helmet for the price. Hopefully I won't have the opportunity to review how well it protects in a crash :D

Although reasonably priced, this is a Bell bike helmet. It is a universal fit, but adjusts easily. It is light-weight, comfortable, and yes, even stylish. I give it 5 Stars for quality, safety, ease of adjustment, value, and comfort.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Comfortable and Well Made, August 27, 2010
By T. Define (Annapolis, MD United States)
No need to spend more on a quality biking helmet. It fits well, is not too heavy and looks great. No flaws in the finish and the padding is held on securely. The only thing missing is a visor, but most helmets don't come with one and serious riders don't use them anyhow.

This is a nice looking helmet. The universal fit feature works well and adjusts fast. It fits my big head fine (7 1/2" hat size). You get a lot for your money, plus is comes with a bonus Bell sticker (that my son immediately claimed!).

Buy with confidence.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A Great Choice, March 11, 2009
By L. Emerson (Bangor, Maine)
If you're looking for a simple and comfortable helmet, this is it.
For those wary of a "one size fits all" helmet, don't be. The helmet has a "web" of hardly noticeable plastic straps that can be tightened or loosened using a discreet dial on the back of the helmet. It makes this helmet, which without this system would wobble all over the place on my head, fit snugly. I haven't been in a crash, so I can't speak for its protection, but I'm confident that the helmet would do its job.
My only complaint is that it didn't come with a visor. I had seem some photos of the helmet with a visor, and every other helmet I've bought came with one, but not this helmet. Perhaps it was just left out of my particular package.
All in all, a great choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Superior performance for the money, January 6, 2009
By D. Messenger (Kalamazoo, MI)
I think I paid $30 for this when I purchased it last spring through Amazon. It looks like some that cost three times that. The fit is great. The straps are comfortable and adjust easily, allowing for a secure fit. This helmet looks good, fits well and the price is right. What more could you ask for?

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Where to find the colors, June 14, 2008
By Urban Nightrider (Sacramento, Ca)
You can find these helmets in just about any decent sporting goods store or bike shop. What you can't find is the availability of color via this Amazon retailer. The price plus shipping was still a deal and we got the color she wanted. Need I say more? On the helmet, it is one of the best one-size-fits-all helmets out there. The helmet fits a tremendously wide range of hat sizes. The vents allow excellent cooling and it is comfortable. Great buy, and thanks for stocking the helmet in red!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Comfy fit, March 21, 2008
By Shopping Queen (Hudson Valley NY)
This is a nice looking and very comfortable helmet. I don't like these things tight and this seems to be shaped with a real head in mind, not a mannequin. It is certainly made for an adult not a child like many I have tried. It is easy to clip on and remove and does not make me sweat - my hair isn't so bad either after wearing. Since helmets are mandatory in most if not all states, I think this is a well-designed, comfortable necessity worth purchasing.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good, solid protection at an affordable price, March 7, 2011
By GWiz (Sun City, CA)
The bell Solar helmet provides the needed (and required in some states) protection while not breaking your wallet. They fit well when adjusted properly and stay put on your head with no pressure points or nagging strap folds poking holes in your noggin. The Dial-a-fit gizmo in the back works well, too. With plenty of colors to chose from (5 of my 21 helmets are Solars), you can look good on just about any color road bicyle. If I remember correctly, they don't come with visors, which are primarily for mountain/street bikes. And if you still want one of those flashy road helmets with swept up tail feathers, be prepared to shell out more bucks. If you just want a good lookin' road helmet that works and looks good, go with the Solar.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice fit, easy to adjust, looks good, December 6, 2011
By Jon Y.
First of all, I have a pretty big head and I usually have to order L or XL for hats, helmets, etc. This helmet fit me comfortably, so if you have a big head like me you can feel confident that it will fit you too. The knob on the back makes it easy to adjust the fit to your head, and the helmet is lightweight and not cumbersome at all like I thought it would be. (I just started wearing a helmet after wiping out on my bike; thankfully I didn't hit my head that time but now I've learned my lesson to be prepared.) I like the look and color of the helmet too; the bright white is easier to see at night time. Haven't crashed in it yet (hopefully never will), but so far I'm glad I made this purchase.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Without spare pads this has a short lifetime., August 23, 2011
By afabbri (seattle, wa USA)
Just bought this helmet to replace another whose pads had worn out after a year or two of use.

I was surprised to see that Bell is not shipping these with a spare set of pads. Based on the short lifespan of these very thin pads, this helmet will end up in a landfill in a year or two. Once the pads wear a little the velcro starts to poke your skin, not fun.

We're debating returning this helmet because of this.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  good fit, but awful buckle ruins the helmet, August 10, 2011
By Kevin B. (USA)
The universal fit mechanism works well and the helmet can be made nice and snug. The main drawback with this helmet is that the buckle/strap combination is horrible. I can't ride 15 miles without it becoming dangerously loose, necessitating constant correction. The straps seem too thick for the buckle adjustment slots, hence the slippage. Maybe this is not a problem if you ride 2-3 miles at a time, but it is a major inconvenience for longer rides. I regret this purchase, and would avoid other Bell helmets in this price range in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Can't beat it., June 30, 2011
By Irie (Alaska)
Not much to say. It's a great value. I wear it almost every day whether on my commute or on a 20+ mile fitness/fun ride and haven't had any issues. The fit is great with the adjustments. My wife and I both have this helmet and with them adjusted for each of our heads, we both find them comfortable.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Similar to Giro Transfer..., June 27, 2011
By E. Wilson (FL, USA)
To be upfront, I bought the Giro Transfer. I did, however, try on the Bell Solar for comparison. It's very similar to Giro Transfer and Giro Indicator (if you took the visor off the Indicator). The build quality is great, but overall it looks slightly cheaper in appearance than the Giros. In weight, bulkiness, and comfort it was almost identical. Out of shallowness I went with the Giro. Well, actually, I paid the exact same for the Giro Transfer on Amazon as I could've paid to pick up the Solar in person at a local Dick's Sporting Goods store. The slightly nicer looks and Giro name brand are what put me over the top and why I didn't mind waiting 5 or so days to get exactly what I wanted instead of settling. There were a few small differences in vent appearance and some of the molding in the back, and in those areas I liked the Giro a tiny bit more. If you decide to buy the Solar, you will not look like you bought a cheap helmet. It's quite respectable and sleek looking, and I don't think you'll be unhappy.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Bell Solar Bike Helmeet, June 27, 2011
By SH (CT)
I learned that a bike helmet should be tried on in the store before buying and not purchased as a gift for someone else on line.

I gave this as a gift to my friend last week and they tried it on ...lo and behold, it really does not fit properly.

Bad mistake on my part. What do I do with it now?

It's brand new, still in the box with receipt!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Well worth the price, comfort, fit & safety! Wear a helmet! :p, August 10, 2010
By gracie
I recently got a new Hybrid Bike, and needed a new helmet. I saw this Helmet at my local Bike Shop but they wanted $$ more. I tried it on for comfort, and it fit well. Got home, searched good old Amazon, and found it here for much less (of course)! So, I placed my order & it arrived w/in 2 days. I got the Charcoal/Black color.

This helmet is great! Comfort, fit & safety...is all I really need in a bike helmet..Oh, looks also! :) For what I call a moderately priced bike helmet, this one works. There really is nothing to this helmet, Adjust the straps, use the ErgoDial for Fit..and your pretty much "good to go"

I wore this out on Saturday for a 2+ hour ride, and had no issues...felt great!!

If you want to stay in the $25 range for a good, decent helmet that will help protect your Head in case of a fall..get this one! : )

Oh, and always wear a helmet, better to be safe!...<.>

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bell Solar Bike Helmet, December 16, 2009
By Yoyo (Richland, WA)
The helmet fits well and has the good adjustment dial in the back. It is light and should be plenty cool enough. Curiously, it appears to be very similar to the Giro Transfer helmet we bought at the same time for the spouse. Blue Bell for male, Red/Silver for female, even more curiously the helmets- when adjusted properly- fit us both equally well! The Bell was less expensive than the Giro, so that was my motivating factor. I am pleased with this purchase & Amazon as usual delivered as promised.

The helmet fits fine and is nice and light. It came in a timely manner also. It's a little iffy buying a bike helmet without getting it properly fitted, but in this case, it worked out fine as the helmet just fit. Maybe it was the luck-of-the-draw. I am pleased with my purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Basic Bike Helmet, March 3, 2008
By A casual stroll through the lu.. (Prague)
Basic Bike Helmet that is light, easy to put on and doesn't really bother you while riding. Fits pretty snug. I haven't had to adjust it yet as it was done for me by a veteran Bike rider but it looks simple. Might suffer from wear/use on the inside but that's expected. Don't know when I'll have to replace it but it seems good enough. Can't speak of the protection it offers unless one is a physics student but I guess it's better than nothing.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good deal, fast ship, no visor, March 10, 2008
By Moretownmac (San Fran, CA USA)
I knew that it didn't have one when I ordered it but I feel like they could have thrown in an optional add on visor. Overall, I am very happy with this helmet, good deal, fast ship, rather stylish. But I must warn that I have a big head and found that there are two tight spots about my temples where I had to compress the foam a little to get a comfortable fit. If my head was any bigger this helmet would not fit but as it is I think its very safe and snug.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bell solar bike helmet, September 13, 2011
By namrats
Nice little helmet. Delivery was quick...i got the biggest size. Had to loosen up the straps for a comfy fit.
I am a size 7 1/2 size and this fit somewhat snug. PLENTY of air ventilation.

good value for the money

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Helmet for the Price, May 25, 2012
By C. Jones (Florida)
My buddy was letting me borrow his old helmet until mine came in. After I used his spare the first time, he wanted to show me his newer helmet which he paid $100+ for. He wanted me to compare the weight of the two, which was noticeably different. After my first ride with my buddy with this helmet, I wanted to compare the weight to his expensive helmet. I was shocked that you couldn't even tell the difference. I handed it to him and he asked me how much I paid again. I laughed and said around $25. It always feels good to walk away with a deal. The helmet is comfortable, fits snug, and is light!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good helmet, great air flow, universal fit works, May 4, 2012
By Rachel Mays
Let me preface this review my saying I do not have any knowledge of how this helmet will perform in an actual crash (thankfully) and I cannot compare it to other helmets. However, I am very happy with this purchase. I was afraid the helmet may not fit right (I have a pretty big head), but the universal fit actually works really well. Visibility is good, and so is air flow. My head still sweats with this on, but as hot as it has been here lately that is not surprising. The style is nice as well. After not wearing a helmet for a while, I found the transition to this one pretty comfortable.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Buy!, April 15, 2012
By Kyle
This is a perfect helmet for the biker that cannot afford the $100+ helmets that do the same quality of work. It fits well, adjust easily, and gives you great protection. Definitely worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great helmet and value!, April 3, 2012
By Jesse
I was looking for a helmet and came across a large array on the internet. As usual, Amazon helped me narrow it down to Bell. The Solar is light and sturdy. It has adjustable straps below the ears, chin strap and in the back of the helmet for a snug fit. When it's on during a ride you can feel plenty of air coming through as well. Can't miss with this.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Seems a Good Buy, March 22, 2012
By Freewheel (New York)
Bought it when helmet I was using was scraped along side from accident. Seems very similar to prior helmet, also from Bell, that was much more expensive. Pads seem a little thinner, that's all. Like that is cheaper, as that'll make me more likely to replace it if it is just minor damaged. I expect protection is as good as prior helmet. Retention system seems the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fits my big melon, March 15, 2012
By Cincy Agent (Cincinnati, OH)
So my wife always jokes and says I have a big head...she is right! After reading the reviews on this helmet, I decided to bite the bullet and order it without taking advantage of my LBS for a fitting. (My motto is that if I use the LBS for product help, I purchase said product at LBS. I just think its the right thing to do...). Happily, this helmet fits my dome quite well and is very adjustable for all sizes. Its a helmet, it saves lives, its cheap...why not buy?

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Feels heavy., February 15, 2012
By Joeh2401
I just received and needs a couple more clicks on my head to fit correct. And if I try to turn dial to tighten, the release is on top of dial and I keep pressing it and it gets loose again. I dont know why they designed it with points on the dial. It starts to hurt my thumb if I try to tighten. I bought this cause the light weight but sticker on helmet says 298 g the description says 255. This sucks..

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great helmet, October 25, 2011
By ED (MA USA)
Great fitting, exellent adjustments - perfect for a helmet mount light for night riding. As functional as the 100+ dollar models. Not bad looking either.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not as advertised, February 17, 2012
By boobaby (los angeles)
This item is not as advertised. It is not an all white helmet. It has black on the inside and outside. I am very upset.
