2.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock, terrible keys, August 29, 2006
By Wendy Wolfe (WA United States)
I bought one of these locks, and it worked great -- until the key broke in the lock (rendering the lock useless and my bike attached to the stand).

Open inspecting the situation (and after five+ hours of self-blame), I realized that the keys are made of a very fragile metal. The key just wasn't strong enough and no matter how "careful" the instructions tell you to be, the darn thing is bound to break.

While I'll buy Kryptonite again, I'll not buy this lock. I need both the lock and key to well-made.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great U-lock, Reasonable bike security when used with a cable, December 4, 2009
By G. Powell (Seattle, WA USA)
I bought this lock to use when I'm out riding and want to leave my bike outside the shop for a bit. I have a Kryptonite New York Noose 1213 Chain Bicycle Lock with Evolution Series 4 Disc Lock Chain Bicycle Lock (4-Foot x 3-Inch) which I use for work. As in the bike is locked all day long away from where I can keep an eye on it and I wanted the best lock I could buy. But that lock is heavy! 8lbs! This one is heavy but not that much. In addition to this lock I also got a Kryptonite Kryptoflex 1004 Looped Bicycle Security Cable (10mm x 4-Foot) to lock the front wheel to the bike. So with a loop around the wheel and the pole, and this lock around the pole my bike is pretty theft proof. Nothing is perfect, thieves could still strip the parts but it's a better lock than most other bike riders are using, so it deters people enough.

On this lock vs the noose, the chain is more flexible in that you can lock the front wheel and the bike to the pole with the same level of high security. The U part of the lock is smaller so it's harder to pry it open. You can get a New York version of the small lock and if you live in the worst area for bike theft, I'd do that. But at 8lbs that chain without a set of panniers to hold it is bulky and a pain to transport.

On this lock, which size to get. I like this medium size, it's big enough to go around the frame, the rear tire and a parking meter. The small one is just frame/tire size and the large one will also hold your front wheel, (if you take it off) but it's getting up there in weight. Like goldie locks, medium is just right. If you are unsure, measure twice, order once.

On the mounting bracket. It sucks, which is why I gave this 4 vs 5 stars. I wouldn't bother with the bracket, instead bungie it to your rack, or put it in your backpack/messenger bag.

On the key, yes they are thin, just be careful and don't force it and you'll be fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Cumbersome, but indestructible., August 9, 2009
By NYC_rich (Manhattan)
My one gripe is that the mounting bracket is not quite adequate. It probably works on every other kryptonite perfectly well. The NYC lock is just so heavy that it's probably better to bungee it to a rear rack.
The advantage is that the lock is just not going to fail, period. Your bike is going to be where you locked it. Downtown Baghdad, wherever. One of the lighter models is probably good enough to meet most needs and is more transportable.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Best security with a lot of bad, May 8, 2008
By Dave Pinke (Brooklyn, NY)
So I just got a pricey road bike for my birthday, and I bought this lock as I live in Brooklyn and hear about how often people lose their bikes, let alone nice bikes in the area. For the most part it has been a pain, yeah, I have no fear that when I use it the bike isn't going anywhere, but its like 10 pounds (what is the point of buying an expensive and light bike if you're going to strap a 10 pound weight to it), it didn't fit with the holder inside of the bike frame, even after removing my water bottle holder, and carrying it in a bag is a huge pain.

I just bought a cable lock for locking it up while in my in the store, but now I think I'm just going to sell both the locks and get the Kryptonite Mini Evolution lock. I usually only leave the bike for an hour or so, and in broad daylight. If someone is willing to risk using a freon torch to get through the Mini Evolution on a crowded street, then I guess they deserve my bike, and I'll just cash in on the insurance. Unless you have to keep your bike outside in an urban area everyday, I'd say skip this beast and go with something more portable.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Seems to be a great lock., September 12, 2009
By Kimberly (UCLA)
I bought this lock because of Slate.com's review of bike locks and this was the best according to their tests. The steel, silver looking clip is to attach it to your bike. I didn't realize this until recently, the bike attachment feature is pretty great.

The lock comes with three keys and one has a light, which is pretty nice for unlocking and locking in the dark. For a week or so I had problems locking the lock. I could get my key in but I had trouble getting it out of the lock, when I locked the lock. I have a feeling this was a user error. Once I started using the lock holder this problem stopped. I suspect I was trying to take the key out at an odd angle or something. Either way, this problem stopped and I have had no other problems with this lock.

This lock also looks good, and it's built well.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  BEWARE of Faulty Key/Lock, September 22, 2010
By Big Jim's Wifey
I purchased this lock for my son who moved to a college dorm. After reading the reviews, I decided to purchase what I thought was the best bicycle lock available. I wanted a lock that would hold up for 4 years while my son was away at college. The first time he used this lock the key broke-off in the lock!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  broken in 1 week, June 1, 2009
By boo boo kitty (lala land)
Functionally this $70 lock still works, but one week after having parked in my garage, 1 of the 2 allen head bolts came out of the black plastic keyhole cover assy. Eliminating my ability to cover the key hole with plastic to keep foriegn matter from dropping in, but lock still locks right? ?? My expectation is reasonable, 1 week after paying $70, the allen head bolt should not be eyelash tight and fall out. Have asked kryptonite representative to explain, have every reason to think that the lock you buy, will be defective in this manner, since I bought 3, 2 of these have bad plastic keyhole cover assys. minor sure, $70?? and it falls apart in a week?

1.0 out of 5 stars.  A garbage lock, August 16, 2009
By Matt W
The first time I used this lock it wouldn't unlock and the key broke off in it.Needless to say what a hazzle that was to cut the lock off with a power saw.And ended up scratching my paint a little in the process.I am glad though that Amazon gave me my money back for the lock. Also what good is a lock if the locking mechanism doesn't work properly. And it is really heavy and really expensive.I would never buy another kryptonite lock.(After that I purchased an OnGuard Bulldog mini.Which I recommend over kryptonite. It is way less expensive.Only a little heavy about 2 lbs.And thick enough to be a good secure lock.I do have to say that I am quite pleased with the locking mechanism it works quite smooth and flawlessly. And this lock is only $23 with an extra cable on Amazon). So I would not recommend any kryptonite lock. Finally fahgetabout kryptonite they are garbage! And get an OnGuard lock and you will be pleased!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Probably the Best U-Lock Out There, March 23, 2011
By Kevster
Great U-Lock

This lock is much beefier than you realize once you handle it. You get use to it, but just know that this is a tough one.

At level 11, it's almost the best (out of the 1-12 scale). It's just one level less than the 6" NY Lock, but it's larger area makes it more versatile. (Additional room to allow more locking options but with 1/2 lb less weight than the 6" version).

Regarding the majority of negative feedback:

Weight - It's heavy, but it's not like a cinder block or anything. It's still quite manageable for a highly ranked U-lock, so it's what you expect it to be. Also, other locks that compare, especially the chains, are much more heavier (10-15 lb), making this (4 lb.) one of the best choices for a weight to security ratio. Also, be aware that KRYPTONITE HAS LIGHTER U-LOCKS AVAILABLE. The tougher the lock , the heavier it will be. Ignore negative feedback on a product that lists the weight and states what it's suppose to do. It was never a light u-lock and wasn't intended to. That's what the Evolution Series 4, or Series 2/Kryptolocks are.

Keys - Many complaints about keys and how they break off. Perhaps, there are older versions that aren't as good, but like other models I own, I can see why keys may break. The cuts on the keys are closer to the end of the key, making it weaker where you need the strength. The key has some length to it because of the depth of the keyhole. If the key is not inserted into the lock all the way, you will only turn a few of the discs that can turn with the key. It will not turn completely, which means you have to turn back and push down farther. People may be still trying to turn it, which can make the key break off into the keyhole. If you understand how the keyhole mechanism works, it may help as a reminder when you use it.

Transportation Bracket - This may be the only disappointment, but it's not really. Included with your lock is a "Free" bracket to connect to your bike. Yes, the bracket isn't that great, but it's just a bracket. Having used the same bracket with other Kryptonite U-Locks, I found that some can be quite stickier than others, sometimes being impossible to remove or pull back out. One way to get around this is to put the lock in the bracket before putting it on the bike. Bend around and work the lock within the bracket a bit to loosen the tightness it may have. Doing this pries out some breathing room for the piece that goes in it. I found this to be effective and is easy to remove and still holds securely without problems.

All in all, I feel much more secure with this lock. It's a good price for the level of security this lock provides out of other choices.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Heavy but Effective, January 6, 2011
By Toybike (Seattle, WA)
I bought this online in 2007, not taking weight into consideration. I got the larger one because I wanted it to be easy to lock up. It is heavy duty, so if it keeps my bike from being stolen, I'm thrilled. I have 1 big qualm with this product, and two small ones. The biggest is the weight factor, it's so heavy, I don't ever want to bring it with me. My more minor grievances with this lock are that within the first month, the lock cover unscrewed on one side, and then fell off. Not a big deal, it's just there to keep dirt out of the keyhole. The other one is the mount. It is extremely difficult to mount and unmount the lock due to the fact that the hard plastic and metal do not easily slide across each other. I finally made this task easier by greasing the area where the two parts mount together.
So, if you want an awesome lock, go for the smallest one that will do the trick. I might possibly buy the smaller version of this lock, for portability and to cut excessive weight. It weights about half as much as my bike. There's some perspective.

3 yr update - Lock got a little rusty and started sticking. I sprayed some WD-40 in it and it works like new. I use a cable with this for my front tire and I think any would-be thieves will just move on to the next bike. I just leave the lock on the bike rack I use most so I don't have to carry the weight, and bought a lighter ulock for keeping with me.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Highly recc, July 28, 2010

The lock is great, but if you lock the way they say to keep it safe, through the rear tire and frame you might not have lots of extra room to fit it around what you are locking too, maybe consider the largerone.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The Ultimate Testamonial, April 9, 2011
By dream factory (Triangulum, M33)
1998 I bought this Kryptonite 4x8" U lock. Not for some fair weathered bike riding. I'd rather ride the horse. But for the outdoor gate at the other end of the property.

We had a metal lock on that there black metal gate. And someone smashed it up. So I got this monster and hooked the gate to the metal fence. Year after year. Over a decade of thunderstorms, sleetstorms, blizzards, freezes and famines. And Yes someone did try to saw it. Like a castle guard it just hangs in there.

I get out that gate bout once a week and it works like a charm. Abit rusted. But the mechanism is smooth and tight.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Kryptonite New York Std. w/ solid mounting bracket, August 6, 2009
By Sweet 1
Although no lock can protect your bicycle from a determined thief with enough time, the New York Std. will make it more likely that he will pass up your bike for an easier target. Its all about how and where you lock your bike. The New York Std. is a big/heavy lock, but I already knew that from reading the description. After mounting it in my triangle there was still enough room for my cage and water bottle. Having said that, I can tell you that this is one of the best bike locks on the market. Its superior quality is apparent from the moment you take it out of the package, and the mounting bracket, although made mostly of plastic, is sturdy and robust. The keys slide all the way in and release the shackle from the crossbar with no problems. Make sure your key is all the way in before you turn, but don't force it! If your have to force it something is wrong, and you should call, email, or write [...] Your Kryptonite has a lifetime warranty, and if there are any defects they will fix or replace it free of charge! And if your bike is ever stolen because the lock failed, they will reimburse you for the base price of your bike*([...]). Of course you have to make sure that you sign-up for the *Anti-Theft offer and provide proof that the lock was defeated, but that is understandable. The Key Safe program, when you register, provides you with the first 2 replacement keys free of charge. The free keys are standard not the lighted. Before you purchase this lock I suggest that you visit Kryptonite's website. You will learn about other great features that I didn't mention here. I am very satisfied with this lock, but it's only a lock. Use it in conjunction with other security devices available, be careful about where and how long you leave your bike, and maybe you won't become another victim!! Pictures of my Mongoose Sabrosa 3x8, with the Krytonite New York Std. mounted on the frame, can be seen above by clicking "customer pictures".

5.0 out of 5 stars.  probably the standard for U locks, June 7, 2011
By John A. Lucier (San Diego)
I've had mine for over four years, it's sturdy and simple. I understand a British publication tested one of these and it endured over 10 minutes of attack by so called "power tools" whatever that encompassed. I believe you can't get more security in a U type lock outside of Abus top models and they cost much more. I use mine with a Cobralinks Jr. 36" armored cable lock, no longer made- the theory is the best lock is 2 locks of different design as most thieves will specialize and carry tools applicable to one kind of lock.
I didn't bother with the bracket it came with, I put it in my backpack. There is talk about breaking keys off, keep your lock packed with grease and ensure the key is fully inserted and never force it when turning and I cannot conceive this will happen. Kryptonite's customer service is the best, they just sent me free of charge new keys for my 17 year old steering wheel lock (yes you need to register the keys) after they wore out from carrying on my key ring- so yeah I'm biased as a loyal customer.
Bottom line, best protection on the market for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Wishing you good lock, September 18, 2010
By Drew (Chicago, IL)
Pros:
-Sturdier and thicker than most U-locks
-In-between size - meaning its dimensions are a littler larger than a mini, but a little smaller than a regular U-lock. This is ideal for my road bike - I can lock the frame and tire to most posts/bike racks with little extra room (this is an additional security measure as it prevents thieves from inserting a jack in the U and popping the lock open). However, those with a mountain or hybrid bike (who want to lock frame and wheel) will probably find this lock too small and might consider the larger size.
-Completely coated with a thick rubber to prevent corrosion and chipping of paint on bike.

Cons:
-Heavy (for toting around)
-Lock mechanism is a little finicky. I sometimes have to finesse the lock and key a little.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Kryptonite New York Standard Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket ( 4-Inch x 8-Inch), April 26, 2010
By K. Ryu (Boston, MA)
Great lock. Turns smoothly and works awesome. Personally, haven't tried the bracket, but if you commute to work/school, might be better to leave the lock in 1 place. I paired with with a 6 foot python masterlock cable to make it an awesome combination. I leave the lock at school due to it being heavy, but carry the cable around with me wherever I go.
Will update if I face any problems. Keys don't seem to be a problem. The lock turns really smoothly so I haven't had to deal with the flimsiness of the lock key. Just make sure it is in all the way and turn it gently. :)

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent lock - but probably overkill, May 26, 2011
By blanx
This is among the most sturdy (and therefore, heaviest) U-locks you can buy. After riding around with it for a few days though, I notice that most bikes comparable to mine (nothing special) are secured with cheaper, lighter locks.

A lighter lock with a chain to secure the wheels will probably be OK in any area with moderate foot traffic during the day. Even with this lock, I wouldn't want to leave my bike in any sort of risky neighborhood overnight. I'm not convinced that the extra $30 bought me any significant amount of additional security above a cheaper lock.

The keys aren't particularly flimsy, but turn easily in the lock. When the lock is detached, the key is locked inside the lock, yet can still rotate easily. While fumbling with the 'U' part, it is easy for the key to get turned in the locking part and become misaligned when trying to re-attach the two pieces. A better design might have the key softly click into the 'lock' and 'unlock' positions, requiring a deliberate turn of the key to reach the other state. This would probably help with the broken keys others have complained about.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock for a Road Bike, May 15, 2011
By Domo
Very pleased with the overall quality, especially the mounting bracket ( just make sure to use the rubber spacing ) - Durable, heavy-duty finish which blends well with even a slim road bike frame. Easy to install and comes with good solid keys ( three; one with a built-in light). I love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Heavy and cumbersome but strong, May 8, 2011
By J. Chan
I've had the NY standard lock for over a year now and I still have possession of my bike =D. It's strong, durable, and keeps the bike safe. The 8in length is great for locking my front wheel and frame against most poles, street signs, and bike racks in NYC. There are a few aspects that I have issues with though. 1) The lock is super heavy and adds weight to my light weight bike. 2) The bike lock annoyingly rattles while riding. I haven't found a way to secure the lock to my bike without using the attachment that attaches the lock to the bike. 3)You have to make sure that you insert the key 100% in the keyhole before turning. Sometimes it feels like I'm going to snap the key when the key is not inserted properly.

Overall, you get what you pay for ... piece of mind and protection.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great solid U lock!, October 12, 2010
By kaotic (Toronto, ON)
Although this is the first u lock I have owned, I can attest that it's definitely a well built one. After my bike was stolen in downtown Toronto when I locked it up with a cable lock to a bike rack (it was cut), I decided I better get something much more reliable. Did a search and decided on this lock and I must say I'm very pleased. It's not light by any means, I would hate to have to carry this in a back pocket, but mounted to the bike I don't notice it. I like the fact that it comes with a built in bike attachment (which was fairly easy to install) and also that it comes with 3 keys. There's a coating on the lock itself so it shouldn't mark up your bike if it's in contact with it. All in all I'm very pleased with this lock and would recommend it. I bought it along with the cable to secure my wheels as they are quick release.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock, September 11, 2010
By capsaicin (Near Washington DC)
Very confidence inspiring! The lock is ultra solid (quite heavy too.) I'm pretty sure you'd need a blowtorch to get through this thing. Other reviewers who complained about the keys: they're not the greatest, but if you don't man-handle them it REALLY shouldn't break. if you press the key in all the way before turning the lock offers little resistance, you just have to make sure to insert the key properly.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Sturdy, Secure, Reliable, April 7, 2010
By A. Popuri (NY)
I was a little taken aback from some of the reviews that gave this a less than favorable review. I've had this bike lock for a while and I feel very confident with it. I combine it with a 7 foot kryptonite kryptoflex cable to lock the wheels to the bike as well. I went with this bike like instead of the smaller New York Kryptonite U lock because the smaller one honestly doesn't fit on have the bike stands in the city

It comes with 3 keys, one lighted and two spares. It also comes with the key code so if you for some reason lose all 3 keys you can get another made. You can also register the key online at the kryptonite website and they will have it on file in case you lose all three keys AND the key code!. The New York Lock comes with a lock guarantee valid in New York City. It is a guarantee on the LOCK, not insurance. So if your bike is stolen because the lock is BROKEN, then they will compensate you for it. For what it is, I think its a great guarantee that Kryptonite threw on to their locks. A lot of people have gripes are about this guarantee but I personally think their provisions for the guarantee are reasonable and make sense. Plus they are the only ones out there guaranteeing their lock like this so it says something about the lock you are thinking about buying.

The keys are small but not too small. They definitely are well made and I feel confident using them. The lock mechanism is EXTREMELY smooth and does not take any kind of force to open it with a key. Its impossible to open this lock with a bic pen, I checked.

As for the lock, I honestly can not even explain how well built this thing is. Its a little heavy 4.4 lbs (still not out of control heavy like a chain lock), but if you live in the city and you're afraid your bike could get stolen...this is your answer. The bike lock is solid and I'm very happy with it.

The lock also comes with a bike lock holder that you can put on your bike. That little silver thing on side of the U lock is what clamps into the lock holder. It clips in secure and you don't have to worry about it. Since the silver clip on the u lock is twistable, you can arrange it anyway you want so it will fit on your bike. I have a rebuilt vintage road bike I use it on and I have no complaints about it.

Overall I'm really happy with this purchase. I'd recommend this to any person who wants a really secure U lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bulletproof, March 18, 2010
By stuffgeeekswant-dot-com (TX)
Yes, it's on the heavy side. No, it's not THAT much heavier than a U-lock. It's a terrific lock.

Downside: The keys do feel a bit flimsy compared to the lock but they do their job. My previous OnGuard lock came with 5 keys, this one comes with 3. I couldn't use the frame bracket with my 52" Specialized Langster, there just isn't enough room in the main triangle to mount the lock and leave ample room for taking it out (it's a pretty beefy lock). Also, keep in mind the anti-theft guarantee is only for up to 2 years and requires you to send them some money (I think $30). I didn't bother doing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  You must Understand!!!! Amazing lock., April 23, 2010
By Doug Williams (Boston, MA USA)
....The New York lock, first off is nothing less of completely worth its weight. There are a lot, if not every review, complaints about the keys, delicate locking system, weight, etc.......

YOU MUST UNDERSTAND!!! KEYS- This is not a run of the mill lock. It is top of the line for its class next to the "faggetaboutit."
About the Keys and internals. ....... Yes, they key combination is one out of a million, so that means a lot of small etching and very delicate imprints, of course you can not grind it as if it were a "master lock" that you had on your locker in high school. If this lock were anything like a "master lock," it would be the equivalent of being able to use a coat hanger to break into a mercedes benz, not going to happen.

YOU MUST UNDERSTAND!!! LOCKING SYSTEM-When you put the key in the hole, you must use FINESSE, and do not grind it, if it doesn't turn, DONT GET MAD!! Slowly return to the start position and gently turn the key again, adjust depth of the key, and you will see that it takes almost no pressure at all to turn the key, just be gentle, it is a very fine mechanism but yet extremely durable.

IT IS USUALLY THE INDIAN, NOT THE ARROW.
Again, to all the complainers, if it doesn't turn, adjust the key, adjust the pressure, and treat it like a girlfriend or something you love, gently. It has a sweet spot..find it.
I ALMOST FORGOT!! It also has a $4500 Insurance if your bike is stolen, granted there are some conditions.

Once thieves see the bumblebee yellow, they don't even look twice, cause they already know there is no point trying to mess with this lock.

YOU MUST UNDERSTAND!!! WEIGHT- People complain about the weight. Again, Anything new, will seem a bit different. I your upgrading from a cheaper lock, it will feel pretty heavy, but you will get used to it, as with anything. It is made with thicker and higher quality metals, it has to weigh more, or they would just be trowing yellow stickers on 20 dollar evolution locks. It is completely weight the tiny bit of weight.

OK, So i guess that is all I have to say. Other wise it is just a great "investment" and you could even write it off on your taxes, if you use your bike for business. Crazy! Enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock, February 8, 2009
By synthetic zero
This is a fantastic lock. Other U-Locks, including Kryptonite's own Evolution series, can be easily defeated with hand tools (according to more than one bike magazine test). The New York lock can only be broken with 10 minutes of heavy effort with a power saw. Getting any other lock is not going to stop any thief with even basic tools.

I've never had a problem with the keys breaking. I did have one of my older keys (> 5 years of heavy use) have the plastic come loose from the metal part of the key, but it was still possible to to turn the lock using pliers. It's never a good idea to force the key, which I suspect the other reviewer did; just jiggle it until the key turns easily. Once in a while you can spray lubricant in there if the key gets stuck.

Don't be fooled by the other reviews ---- this is the lock to get if you want real security.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Big bad lock, April 14, 2009
By Tech Guru (Vancouver)
This lock is a beast no doubt, but that's what your paying for in this instance. This lock is close to impossible to pick on a street and would probably be faster to cut through the thing your bike is locked up to than saw through the new york. I'm already 230+ lbs so the little extra weight doesn't matter to me. Since I use this on my commuter, I just leave it attached to the frame.

I have never had a problem with the key and I have been using this most every day in sun and rain for the last 9 months. The key has always been smooth. The light on the key, after using it a good amount has started to flicker when the button is depressed. Since the light was a bonus I didn't take this to heart. I still enjoy the look of the key with the light on it over the other keys that it comes with. Makes The key look more like a car key and makes it very easy to figure out which key it is on your key ring in the dark or in your pocket.

The few problems I did have were fixed with a little WD40. The lock started to rust because of all the rain it was taking; winter months in Vancouver take a toll. A little WD40 a few months ago and the lock is still smooth as silk.

I've read some reviews of people complaining about the lock being difficult to get in and out of the lock holder on the bike frame. It was a little sticky at first, but it loosens up after a month or so. If you find you are having problems with it a little WD40 and it will loosen right up, a little machine oil might work as well.

Living in Vancouver and going to school very close to the slummy part of town, I take this lock with me everywhere I go. I team it up with a Kryptonite KryptoFlex for the front wheel and front of the frame. That way if anyone wants the whole bike they are going to have to have a very very strong leverage attack and some bolt cutters. No one, even someone jonesing for a fix is motivated to do all that.

This lock is what you pay for. If your only locking your rear wheel and back of frame id suggest looking at the mini. I'd also send you in that direction if your afraid of the weight (3.9 lbs not 10lbs.) I like the longer one personally, there have been many instances where i would not have been able to lock my bike up if i had the mini because of space around the bike racks.

All in all, this is one of the better locks you can get for your bike.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not Worth $5, August 11, 2009
By M. Silkey
Almost all Kryptonite U Locks are Garbage. Even the $100 NY style locks. Watch the video on You Tube on how to open them in less than a min. Do not buy locks with round keys. OnGuard uses laser cut keys, case hardened Master lock padlocks are more secure than this U Lock. A disc lock and 2.5ft of heavy duty hardened chain from the hardware store run about $30

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My subjective comparision between this & the Fahgettaboutit, December 18, 2011
By Tim Guy!
After owning this lock for 6 months and loving it, here are my reasons why I switched.

Living in the big city and riding bikes, owning the best lock available is the most important step to keeping the bike in your possession. Kryptonite does this well. Very well. They offer all sorts of strengths depending on your threat level of getting stolen. Considering that I would have to leave my bike locked up downtown for hours on end, I'd figure mine was pretty high. So naturally I bought the strongest they had, New York Fahgettaboutit and boy was that beafy. First impressions, hand down it's the strongest and toughest lock. Extremely sturdy but it wasn't the right lock for me. Why ?

First. It's shankel is shorter then this one and while that's done intentionally to prevent jacks from being used to pry open your lock, it realistically means that you are really limited to what/where you can lock it up. And once you locked it up you could only lock up the frame (I have wheel locks on my bike, but secondary protection is always welcomed). This version, while slightly lighter, offered more space to lock my bike to more choices, but I could also get a wheel locked up to ( and thus preventing a jack from getting into the lock). This became a win/win

Second. Storage. While not in use, i found it a pain to store the 'Fahgettaboutit'. When I carried a back pack with me, the extra weight was really noticeable and uncomfortable. I couldn't really keep it in the front of the bike. I tried keeping it on my rack in the back but i found it a little dangerous because the little shifts in movements become dangerous at high speeds, especially while turning. With this version, when I found out it has the bike clamp I became really excited. Not only does it store it safely, but I have it in the center part of my frame, which means my CG (center of gravity) is excellent. It doesn't move or shift at all. Every month or so it becomes a little sticky or doesn't slide in 'n out as easily and I just add, literally, a drop of oil and it's back to as good as new. The trade off is some folks like to keep their water bottle there. So if you don't mind the trade off or have another place for it ( not enough space for both inside the frame) consider this lock.

Lastly. Security. I started by saying that security was my number one most important option, and then I give all these reasons why I love this lock and none of them are security related. Well lets address that. Remember, all locks are merely deterrents and all can be cut through. All of them. You're never going to be 100% theft proof. Impossible. Yes the Fahgettaboutit is the Fort Knocks of locks. And if that's the case, then this is the....hmm, what's the 2nd most secure building ? No one ever talks about that! I digress, basically this lock isn't no push over. You're not getting through with bolt cutters or other little toy options. You need a cordless saw ( don't laugh, they use them!) So basically it comes down to this. This lock will take about a minute to saw through. The Fahgettabouit will buy you an extra maybe 10 to 20 secs of drill time. Will the cops show up or a citizen intervene in the extra time ? Chances are if it didn't happen in the first minute, its slim to happen in the next 20 secs. Is that extra drill time worth the trade offs of everything listed above. If it's for you, then the Fahgettaboutit is the perfect lock. For me, the trade-offs as mentioned above are more valuable in a day to day situation and I feel just as safe.

Hope this review helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  heavy metal, November 6, 2011

I've been gentle after reading the reviews here where people have used excessive force with the keys which apparently aren't very strong. It's working well and I'm glad I bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  excellent massive lock, October 23, 2011
By The Mentat (USA)
This lock isn't not cheap but it is massive and I'm sure it does the job it is intended to. When using it I feel confident that my bike will be there when I get back. It does weigh a lot but that comes with the territory. Heavy duty locks weigh more - period.

As opposed to some reviews out there, I found that turning the key is super easy. I was actually surprised how easy it was. Some people said the key broke when they turned it. The only suggestion I can have is to make sure you're holding the "bottom" (straight) part of the lock in your hand when turning the key so the weight won't be on the key.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  KEY BREAKS IN LOCK., September 19, 2011

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock, awful mount., September 18, 2011
By B. Beck
I can't fault the security of this lock - it's huge, it's heavy, and it's easy to operate. I absolutely trust my bike with it. The mount, however, is quite poor. Other reviews have claimed that it's not durable - I can't test this because there's simply nowhere I can put it on my bike. I have a 2011 Trek 1.5, and my experiences exactly matched the user picture of trying to mount it on the Trek 2.1 - there's only one real place it fits, and that one place manages to interfere with both water bottle slots, so it's impossible to both mount this lock and have a water bottle. For now, I've ordered a hydration pack to work around that problem, but it's not a great solution. The mount is larger and clumsier than it has to be, especially for a top-of-the-line product like this.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock, Terrible Mount, August 18, 2011
By james.duhe
I just moved to a sortof shady part of Washington D.C. and wanted a new lock to keep my bike safe. This lock is considered the gold standard for bike safety, and I can understand why. It's heavy enough to use as a weapon, but the bike mount makes it easy to tote around. Be warned though: the mount is crazy difficult to get off your bike, so install it correctly the first time. I inadvertently put it on backwards when I first got it and had to cut it off my bike frame. Kryptonite (thankfully) sent me another mount for free, but it was still and inconvenience.

Also, depending on the size and positioning of your wheels and frame, it can be difficult to fit this lock around the frame, wheel, and bike rack. I strongly suggest using this to lock up your bike frame and getting a secondary lock for your wheels.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  I like it!!, August 17, 2011
By gkkim
It feels strong and looks nice. i guess it works cause no one stole my bike yet! i like how they give you a L wrench to install the mount to the bike. it comes with 3 keys. one of the keys has a blue flashlight on it so its pretty nice. the reason why i didnt give it 5 stars is because i havent had it for a while to see if can still "work a long period of time" and the mount was supper hard to put on. maybe im just weak ..hahahaha but yea it was hard to put on! but i say BUY IT~!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock - just too heavy for the protection, August 13, 2011
By Emmanuel Lemor (San Francisco, CA)
Great product no doubt... and hard to get into absolutely - but there should be a way for Kryptonite to give the same level of protection without having us lug around a small airplane ;) LOL

The key is solid enough even though I had seen reviews warning about that.. you just have to be careful, not rushing when you insert the key all the way down the lock... nothing tough really...

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Heavy, Solid Lock, July 30, 2011
By Vijay Shankar Venkataraman (Mumbai, India)
My earlier U-lock was cut with a bolt-cutter. Don't think many thieves would try that with this lock. So far (2 months), this lock has worked beautifully.

I would recommend this lock to anyone who has a fixed commute. You can then keep it locked at your destination.

Only con: Too heavy to carry around.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  New to biking, great lock., July 18, 2011
By preddy
Upon recently buying a bike to use on my college campus I was unsure of what lock to buy. I had heard countless stories of stolen bikes and people will go to endless measures to steal a bike. The Kryptonite New York U-Lock is one of the toughest U-Locks made. It is easy to open with one of the provided keys, and the rubber outside makes it friendly to hold. The one downfall of the lock is the weight, weighing 4 pounds maybe, it can be a burden to put into your backpack to hold. I soon discovered latching the lock onto the rear rack of my bike was the smartest option, relieving my back and shoulders of 4 more pounds I would have to carry, along with other books and my computer. I recommend this lock to anyone who is serious about protecting their bike.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Bracket jammed. Doesn't slide back out., June 1, 2011
By mom (New York, NY United States)
The lock is heavy and bulky.

The bracket is very difficult to mount onto the frame. The sliding belt wouldn't slide in. I tried to do it without the frame, it just jammed. It said to use a screwdriver to slide it back out. It doesn't work at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  malanger, April 30, 2011
By malanger
I ride a dutch style bike. I use it to go shopping etc... So I needed a lock that I felt confident would deter thieves. I haven't had any issue with it at all. I have only had it for a month or so. I've read that the key can break in the lock itself. I haven't had that problem but I'll be careful now that I know that it's possible. If I could choose again - I'd get the wider lock. This standard size doesn't go around the larger poles -so I'm either only securing the bike frame only then using the cord (that I also bought) to secure the bike wheels OR I have to find a smaller pole all together. OH - and it's HEAVY! The bracket thingy is pointless if you have a girly bike -like mine. HOWEVER, I feel very secure with this lock. I LOVE MY BIKE, so the cost was worth it.

I am new the biking world and new to bike locks, so I can't say much except that this lock is quick and easy to use. 5.0 out of 5 stars.  New York Standard, April 17, 2011
By David Daversa
Fiercely intimidating lock. Will add about 10lbs to your ride, but is the necessary equipment to deter would be thieves. Also makes a great paperweight, hammer, jersey shore belt buckle and weapon. Also don't check it in with your carry on luggage on an airplane. It is considered along the lines of brass knuckles. Highly recommend even when the lock was almost half the price I actually paid for my bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  pretty sweet, February 13, 2011
By ElloEllo
I read some negative reviews about the keys and I wanna say that I have had NO TROUBLE WITH MINE AT ALL. The lock is a little heavy and there isn't enough room to mount it on my bike but I just stick it in my back pack and that works just fine for me. The reason the mount doesn't fit on my bike is because I already have something mounted there, if you don't have anything already there it's gonna fit fine on any bike I've ever seen. All in all this is a GREAT LOCK and when I leave my bike somewhere I am absolutely confident that it's gonna be there when I get back. I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND this lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  very solid, well-tested, December 28, 2010
By QuakerProf
Do yourself a favor and Google the integrity tests for U-locks done by one of the European agencies. This U-lock outperformed the other competitors, and I trust my very expensive bicycle to it at the gym while I change for work.

That said, I would never leave any bicycle outside overnight, no matter what lock was being used. All locks are basically delays to thieves, and at night, thieves have much more time to work.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Lock, October 14, 2010
By Daniel
Kryptonite New York standard u-lock is a beast of a lock, I can't imagine what the fahgettaboudit is like. It's big and it's heavy, so I hope it does the job. I had a little scare when I locked it to my bike but couldn't get it off- sometimes the key doesn't get all the way in and it won't turn, so you have to be careful- don't force it as I'm sure that will break the key. Otherwise, I really like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Heavy U-Lock, September 9, 2010
By A. B. Babcock
This will probably be the the last lock I buy for many years. It is very heavy duty. A little on the heavy side, but totally work it. A u-lock is a great improvement over the crappy wal mart cable lock I had. The size is just right for getting around my bike and rear tire when I really need to, but it still gives me enough wiggle room so I don't have to just lock to a rack. I feel much better about my bike as a whole with this lock. Easy and fast to use!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This is a great lock!, December 17, 2009
By Charles W. Swanson (Princeton, NJ)
I have now owned this lock for almost a year.
It is very sturdy, and the included bracket mounts very easily to your bike. It's also large enough that you can lock your bike easily to whatever is around. If you live in NYC or something, maybe it's not heavy enough, but often, I find that whatever I'm locking the bike to would be easier to break/cut through than the lock itself.

Occasionally, the lock does get stuck a bit, but if you throw in a bit of oil or lock grease or whatever, it works fine again.

I am very happy with this product. Also, it doesn't weigh much, and the peace of mind you get by using a U lock over a cable is priceless!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  AWESOME, October 2, 2009
By Jared Ng
Great sturdy lock... very well protected... I'VE NEVER HAD ANY problems with the key & lock as long as you don't jam the ke into the lock... great for the price provided. Metal seems very sturdy and although kinda big so difficult to carry around weight is expected but a lil heavy.

but i mean i feel secure and my bike isn't gonna get stolen unless someone sits there for a long time to draw attention.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Big heavy lock, September 6, 2009
By Derrick Turner
I knew what the weight description said but I didn't realize how much extra weight it added to my backpack. Other than that it is certainly a secure lock. The large size comes in handy for locking it to odd things or just being able to go through the wheel and around the frame to a bike rack. My one complaint I guess is that even though I generally don't leave it outside in the elements (handful of times) the ends are already rusted and get stuck. I have to whack the hell out of it to get it open. I suppose I could spray it down with WD-40 but I don't really feel like getting into my backpack and having to smell it all the time.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Headed for college, January 30, 2012
By BikeKrew7
Great Price! Shipping Free! Arrived a day ahead of expected! Great Product features = double bolt device and very thick.

Background: Old Mountain Bike went to College with a StreetWise U-lock/Cable combo. Stolen over Thanksgiving Break 2 months after school started.
NOW: Purchased this lock to lock up a new bike with a Kryptonite 7' cable. Lock is big enough to make locking to racks easier and it wasn't so heavy to be unwieldy.
INSTALLATION: Mounted it onto the rear stay of the comfort bike, which has an unusual (no) top tube.
Needed to use pieces of old cut up tire to fill space with mounting strap because the strut is rather narrow and though the strap did tighten around the strut it didn't have enough "bite" to keep it from spinning. So I cut a piece of old tire rubber and slipped it between the strut and strap and it held great.
The lock fits very snug into the bike mount which is better than loose. I used some teflon spray to help it slide in and out easier.
BIKE INSURANCE: The only issue with the lock is the insurance which requires returning part of the lock if the bike is stolen. Last bike the thief took everything. So nothing to return. I get where Kryptonite doesn't want to get ripped off by folks that forget to lock their bikes/fraud. So don't buy the lock because it will pay for your stolen bike. Some thieves don't leave the lock behind so their methods won't be discovered.
I'm hoping the "I don't need to run faster than the bear, I just need to run faster than you" analogy applies with a bigger lock than the other bikes around this one.

WORD TO THE WISE: Don't leave your "locked" bike out on street for long breaks. Every lock can be defeated with time and access, as we found out the hard way.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Leave your bike with confidence and security!, January 9, 2012
By anthonyb (downtown los angeles)
after having my bike stolen outside of a subway station in downtown la, i went on a mission to find the most reliable and secure method of locking my bike. this lock has excellent construction and operation. i can now leave my bike and know it will be there when i get back. the holder took a while to find optional positioning on my bike, but i found a way to put mount it so there is no interfering with pedaling at all. i have read that some people have broken their key... i have not had any problems with it as the locking mechanism is extremely smooth and easy to use. it is adequately long to get my bike on any post i have tried, but it takes some effort to try to get two bike frames in here and also around a post. i have done it though, but it was not easy.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  U-Lock seems good, bracket sucks., January 1, 2012
By S. Granger (Los Angeles, California United States)
The U-Lock is fine, but I'm not sure that it's really that much better than the older (cheaper) U-Lock I had. It doesn't seem that much thicker at all. The bracket sucks. In trying to get it on the pointed, arrow plug stabbed me very deeply in the hand. Not only useless but the design is dangerous. Luckily I was just getting started so I bandaged my hand before I went out. I will be tossing that and using the bungie cord instead. I am not sure I'd recommend this U-Lock because a good U-Lock should come with a mechanism to attach to the bike and for the cost it's not that much thicker than the cheaper lock. Not sure it's truthfully worth the extra money, but at least the lock works. It's just keeping it on the bike that is an issue. I think they really need to redesign the bracket pronto, I'd pay for a good solid replacement that actually works.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great LOCK ALLOT EASY TO USE & CARRY STRONG, November 8, 2011
By jay
THIS LOCK IS GREAT I LIVE IN NYC AND IT WORKS GREAT. I USE TO OWN THE HEAVY 1410 KYPTONITE CHAIN IT WAS TO HEAVY AND A PAIN TO CARRY AROUND. THE ONLY THING GOOD ABOUT IT WAS IT HAD MORE LENGHT TO LOCK UP THE BIKE. THIS U LOCK FITS AROUND ALL BIKE RAILS AND STREET SIGNS. I LOCK MY FRONT WHEEL AND FRAME TO THE POLE. THAT WAS MY CONCERN WHEN I PURCHASED THIS LOCK, IF I COULD DO THE WHEEL AND FRAME AND I COULD. MY FRONT TIRE HAS A QUICK RELEASE SO I NEEDED TO LOCK BOTH UP. WHAT I ALSO LIKE ABOUT THIS LOCK IS THE BIKE HOLDER PIECE. IT GOES ON TIGHT AND SO FAR IS VERY SECURE. AS FOR THE OTHER SMALLER U LOCK THAT WOULD ONLY COVER THE FRAME. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE QUICK RELEASE TIRE THEN THAT IS A GOOD LOCK FOR YOU. EVEN IF YOU HAD A QUICK RELEASE TIRE YOU CAN BUY A CLAMP FROM HOME DEPOT AND PUT IT ON AND THEN THE FRONT TIRE WOULD BE SECURE. AS FOR THE BIGGER U LOCK IT MAYBE EASIER TO LOCK UP A BIKE THEN THIS ONE. BUT IT TAKES UP MORE ROOM AND IS BIGGER. THIS LOCK IS WORTH IT. IF YOU LIVE IN ALLOT SAFER PLACE YOU CAN USE THE CHEAPER LOCKS. GOOD LUCK

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Only trust kryptonite!!!!, October 28, 2011
By Singlespeed
The only lock to be trusted with anyone who care about their bike. I use it on a busy college campus synonymous with bike theft there have even been cases of people who do not even go to the college but walk around stealing all the student's bikes, Scumbags to say the least. There is no point in spending an arm and a leg on a nice road bike just to cheap out on the lock. The New York U-lock and the kryptontie cable is STRONG... good luck to thief that thinks they are gonna pull one over on this combo. they will look like fools. Not to say its impossible but it will take a very long time leaving the stupid crook hacking away at a bike in a public area in my case a college campus with plenty of security. Do not trust knock offs you will wish you spent a little more when your standing there with nothing but a dumb look on your face. well recommended any product by kryptonite.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great U-lock, October 26, 2011
By J. Unger (Snoqualmie, WA)
I will be parking my bike in a campground, where it will be unsupervised for many hours. This is the ideal lock. And in response to those who say the key broke off, I really don't understand that. There is absolutely no reason to apply enough torque to break a key. Never force a mechanism. If you have to, you are doing something wrong. Only downside, is lock is pretty heavy. But that is the price for security.
