Great "Real" Kid's Bag! Field-tested Colorado Rockies, August 26, 2007
By growing mom (Monument, CO United States)
|
|
Our family just returned from a weekend camping trip near Steamboat Springs, CO. My girls, 3 and 5, were excited to use their real sleeping bags (an upgrade from Winnie the Pooh or Dora bags really made for indoor sleepovers). Inside the bag, there is a little pocket with velcro to hold a small stuffed animal. Stowing a travel pack of tissues would've been ideal as we all got a souvenir cold.
The real test came the first night out . The sky was clear with millions of stars and a near full moon so we left the fly off the tent. I never realized how insulating a tent rainfly is...we awoke to 37 degrees! The girls were toasty warm, happy and cute as bugs in their grasshopper bags.
The length of the bag is great as they will be able to use them until we're ready to upgrade to adult down bags.
Wonderful product, really fast shipping from Amazon.

Nice warm bag, September 15, 2006

I got this bag for my 5-year old for our trip to Yellowstone NP this summer. He stayed warm and toasty even though temperatures dropped into the low 40's and we awoke to frost a couple of mornings. He loves the bag!

GREAT BAG...WARM...VERSITLE...LIGHT...DURABLE, April 6, 2007
By C. Fletcher

The Eureka kids 30'grasshopper is an awesome sleeping bag, and a great value. We have two girls ages 6 and 8 who we purchased the sleeping bags for. On an week long camping trip in early spring twice the temperature dipped into the thirtys, and once into the low thirtys. Our girls stayed toasty warm and comfortable in their grashopper mummy bags. These bags also pack well, and have a good zipper. For the money these bags simply can't be beat.

Durable, October 15, 2007
By MamaB (Nebraska, USA)

This sleeping bag is nice and durable - we've washed it several times and it's holding up just fine. The inside material is very 'cold' to the touch until it warms up so we end up putting a fuzzy warm blanket inside to make it 'feel' warm.

Awesome for freezing sleep overs, November 15, 2006
By David Allen Hazlewood (Tacoma, WA)
|
|
I bought this for my 6yr old daughter as she sleeps over at the grandparents out in the boondocks and it's often freezing in the loft area where she sleeps. The 30-degree coverage definitly works for her and she doesn't come home complaining about how "IT's FREEZING!!! at Grandma and Grandpa's" any more *laugh*

nice sleeping bag!, May 15, 2009
By I. Echard (NL)
|
|
We received the sleeping bags fast and on time. We camped with them and the kids love them. My kids are 2 and 3 and did not have a problem with using the sleeping bags. My two year old was unable to unzip the bags fine and they did not get stuck. We camped in rainy and colder conditions, but they stayed warm and toasty in the bags. The color is nice for boys and girls, especially since they are darker and do not get dirty as soon as a light colored ones. I have washed one of them on the camping trip and it held up really nice. Both of them were washed when we came home and they held up nicely. They are warm enough for cold weather and easily cared for. They fit in the stuff sack when neatly rolled up, as you would with any sleeping bag.

Brownie camping trip tested, May 7, 2007
By Howard J. K. (Newark, DE United States)

Daughter took it on a trip for brownie scouts, used it in an open faced "Adirondack" shelter, on a cool spring night, kept her very warm. Nicely sewn, with an inside flap to cover the zipper.

Snug as a bug, October 10, 2008
By Grandma La-La (Chicago area, IL)
|
|
We bought this sleeping bag for our 4-year-old grandson for his very first camping trip.
It has the Eureka quality we've grown to trust: solid seams; comfortable loft; durability. And what a reasonable price. It was delivered even more quickly than expected, too.
Glad that we took the time to find this item, rather than settling for those lightweight products at discount stores. It was 39 degrees our first night and our little guy was snug as a bug in a rug!
The best testimony is the fact that he didn't want Grandma and Grandpa to store it for him until the next trip. He wanted to take it home!

Returned it, August 15, 2007
By dosawalla (Davis, CA United States)

Sleeping bag and stuff sack have a very cheap feel to them. The stuff sack feels like it could tear easily when getting the bag back in. The zipper got REALLY stuck (literally 5 minutes of wrangling) on our first try with it and does not zip smoothly (even for adults). Can't say how well the bag performs in the cold, as we decided to return it 20 minutes after receiving it. For the same price, we got a very decent quality adult sleeping bag (that my child will fit into) with a lower temperature rating.

Sleepover/Car Camping sleeping bag in a Mummy shape, September 10, 2010
By J. D. Gohman (Tampa, FL USA)
|
|
First, I would like to say that my daughter was very excited to get a big girl bag. It fits her very well (she is 7 and average build and weight). It seems to be adequately warm (we live in FL so it has never gotten real cold). Its quality is not what you get with more expensive adult bags however for less than $30, the quality is right in line with what I would expect. However, I was disappointed to see how little this bag compressed when stuffed into a stuff sack. This is of primary importance as we mostly backpack vs car camp. It seems to be filled with the same type of fill that you would find in a cheap rectanglar bag that you might find at any local bargain retailer. This thing doesn't even compress as well as my 0* military sleeping bag, which is about twice the size of my regular 30* bag, it completely fills her 30L backpack and that is sitting on it to get it in the pack. I didn't give it 1* b/c I know that we are using this outside how it was intended to be used.

Kid Sleeping bag intended for camping, August 23, 2009
By Stacey (Evergreen CO)
|
|
We bought this bag for our daughter two years ago (she was two at the time) for tent camping. We camp in the Colorado Mountains so night temperatures can be near freezing even in the middle of the summer. Unlike most child sleeping bags it is rated for 30 degrees. We have been so happy with it we purchased a second bag for our one year old this year. We have never seen any sign of the kids getting cold. Great price and it also washes well!

Excellent for Outdoors, May 20, 2009
By Kimberly A. Brown (NW Montana)

We purchased two of the Grasshopper sleeping bags for our boys (ages 3 & 5) for camping in our pop-up camper. They work perfectly!! They are warmer than my Mountain Hardware sleeping bag! The temperatures get below freezing and they still have no problems.
The only warning I will give: these are NOT slumber bags! We kept our boys cheap slumber bags for use indoors. They tried to sleep in the Grasshopper bags on their bedroom floor the first night we got them and they were so sweaty and hot they climbed into their beds during the night.

this bag is good however the kids found it uncomfortable at the feet because of the tightness. Kids like to spread their feet around and the cocoon shape does not allow for that.

Bought two of these for my boys (4yrs) and (6yrs)...they work great! We have not used them outside of the house, but they seem to be happy with them. My older one is a big kid (size of an 8 yr old) and he fits in it just fine, with plenty of room to grow;-)

Good for weekend camping, too bulky and heavy, July 31, 2009
By Happy Squishy (IA)

The sleeping bag does not have the yellow strip shown in the picture. But it still looks pretty nice. It has been keeping me warm at 50 degree, but I guess you can wear fleece pants when it gets colder. It is bulky and heavy. It is not meant for backpacking.

Great Sleeping Bag for Kids, January 3, 2011
By CampingMom
|
|
I bought this for my five year old and the purple one for my 8 year old daughter. We've been out several times now - the bag has kept him warm and comfortable even one night when the temperature dropped into the 20s. Given that I'm only 5'2'', I thought I might fit the small size, but I'd say 4'10'' is the max for this sleeping bag. The kids love the pocket where they can store little toys. Both kids still needed help with the zippers, but once zipped up they were good for the night.

Loved it!!, May 24, 2007

My daughter loves her sleeping bag... no need to layer the jammies in this bag either... she actually woke up cuz she was to hot and needed water. The extra pocket is super great for a small animal or we use it for an extra pacifier in the middle of the night. Its very soft and comfy. Plenty of room to grow in.. our daughter is two and I am pretty sure she can use this well into JR High. Totally worth it purchase!

Disappointing, April 22, 2010
By Mom of Two (Akron, OH United States)
|
|
We ordered these bags for our young boys, expecting them to be used for summer camping and occasional backpacking use. We were disappointed with several aspects of the bag (perhaps our expectations were too high...) 1)The color was the worst color green I have seen. Not anywhere close to the color in the online pictures, regardless of retailer. 2) The quality of the shell material seemed very thin and poor. 3) The fill was not of good quality. We are returning these bags and looking for replacements.

Don't Expect It To Look Like the Picture, January 6, 2008
By The Happy Rock (Philly area)
|
|
This is a warning that the bag didn't look like the picture. The inside lining is a lighter gray and there was no orange strip around the mummy part. If you liked the looks of the bag in the picture like we did, the real bag will be a disappointment.
Since my son is two we won't be really testing the durability and temperature control of the the bag too much, but the quality and design look solid.

Great sleeping bag - fast delivery, June 13, 2008
By the Lion's mother (New York NY)

My son had a sleep away field trip with his class and I needed a sleeping bag in a hurry. We chose the Eureka Grasshopper for the shape and the colors it also looked like a good quality sleeping bag. I was worried to not get it on time so I contacted the vendor. They made sure I had it on time and when we received it my son loved it so much he had to try it out the same night.
I highly recommend it.

The best-kept secret in kid-friendly camping, January 23, 2012
By R. A. Ferreyra (Murray, KY United States)
|
|
The Grasshopper is light, durable, warm, and all-around awesome. My boys (now 13 and 10) have used these bags for 3-4 years in various scout and family campouts and backpacking trips. The bags have taken everything the boys have done to them over the years; the zippers still work fine. We've also had them washed several times with no loss of performance. My older son has used his in temperatures well below 30 (down to 8 F) by adding a lightweight fleece liner and sleeping with his clothes on. I think he's finally outgrown it; it has served him well, and won't be easy to replace in a larger format.

Not great quality, February 8, 2011
By Captain video
|
|
I got this bag for my five year old boy to take on sleepovers and car-camping.
The first time he took it on a sleepover (indoors) it started coming apart at the seams, so the fill was visible.
As I was packing it to return it to Amazon, I saw that the stitching on the stuff-sack was really weak as well.
I exchanged it for another of the same, because it's cool-looking and seems perfect for kids. However, if it's the same poor quality, I will bite the bullet and get him a "real" bag. Too bad, I thought it was going to be great.

Very nice and comfortable., January 9, 2010
By R. Perez (Miami, FL USA)
|
|
I bought it for my 6 yr old son and he really enjoyed the warmth and feel of the bag. He especially liked the little interior pocket to store his toys with him.
The inside is a comfy, fleecy micro-fiber type of material with the exterior shell being of a typical satin sleeping bag material.
It's easy to fold up and put back into it's stuff sack.
We're not used to the cold weather in the souther US, so when we used it on a night of about 37 - 40 degrees, it worked but was close to our comfortable limit. My son was wearing full thermals which helped. On a 50-60 degree night I would highly recommend it, anything lower I would rethink getting it for us.

Awesome Bag for a Kid, November 24, 2009
By TnVol (Tennessee)

Excellent product. If you backpack with kids, they should be carrying this. Bought this for my son, he is now 11 and still using it. May outgrow it in another year but it has worked very well.
Used it in temps around 40 and my son was more than comfortable. He is a very thin boy and I worry about him getting cold but he sleeps better than me. I throw a fleece blanket in it when we get in the 30's.
Great product.

Alaska Camping with the Eureka Grasshopper Children's Sleeping Bag - GREAT!!, June 15, 2011
By Laura H.
|
|
My husband and I purchased this "first" sleeping bag for our 1-year-old son for use while tent camping in Alaska's "unpredictable" summer weather. We put the sleeping bag inside of his "KidCo PeaPod" brand infant tent (that we put next to our bed in our tent), and fold the excess sleeping bag underneath the end of his air mattress that comes with the "KidCo PeaPod" tent. It seemed to keep our son very warm the one night that we used it! We checked on him many times while he was asleep in the tent before we went to bed ourselves, and he seemed very warm and cozy. Our portable baby monitor also let us know that he was sleeping very well, as there was no stirring in the early night hours of him falling asleep.
The one problem that we encountered was not a problem with the sleeping bag or its warmth so much, but that our son is a toddler, so is a "little small" for the opening of the bag. He doesn't like to sleep with covers on AT ALL either, and would try to wiggle and squirm out of it, so we ended up having him sleep in the middle of us in our double Coleman sleeping bag in the middle of the night. He was a little chilly feeling on the face when I checked on him as the chill of the night set in, and he absolutely will not wear a hat to sleep... I would highly recommend this bag though, as it kept his whole body toasty warm, except for what was exposed to the chilly air. As he gets older, the Eureka Grasshopper will prove to be a great sleeping bag I'm sure!! It will hopefully be a sleeping bag that we can count on for a very long time, that he is able to grow into, and will hopefully always keep him warm living and camping in Alaska!
We will also be using this sleeping bag for him in our cabin boat. We do heat our boat cabin , so it will probably be TOO warm, but would be a great blanket unzipped for a child of his age/height (because it is a "mummy" bag and restricted at the foot). Then he can wiggle and squirm all he wants, and will HOPEFULLY still be under it if the cabin ever happens to get chilly for some reason! We'll just have to continue checking on him through the night, as you will have to do with all children at his age...
Overall I feel the Eureka Grasshopper sleeping bag is a great sleeping bag choice for all children!! I would highly recommend buying one for the price, as Eureka has proven itself to be a great outdoor brand!! (I have also heard that "petite" women can even use this sleeping bag, and could stay much warmer than with others, as long as there is ample space around their body for heat to radiate!). I believe the bag goes to a "comfortable height" of 5ft.+, and it has been rated to 30 degrees.
Wait, only one CON - Careful when stuffing the sleeping bag - Due to the silky material of the "stuff sack", it may tear or start to split at the seems if you put a lot of force into it...
Other than that though, WE LOVE IT!

Looks nice, but I'm not sure about the warmth, May 25, 2011
By J. T. Klein (Oakland, CA)
|
|
I subtracted 2 stars only because I'm concerned about the lil' guy being warm to 30degrees in this thing.
Is it cute (c'mon thats why we buy this!) YES!
Does it work... YES!
Does it look well made...debatable, how about OK made.
Will it keep them warm - YES, if you do summer camping.
NOTE: We do high elevation camping, as well as desert, and winter (not -15 winter) so your results may vary. Heck, this might be perfect for overnights, and summer camping.

Great Quality Sleeping bag!, March 31, 2011
By Jess (portland, OR)
|
|
I bought this for my 6 yr old's 6th birthday a few weeks ago. He loves it. He's used it for sleepovers in his brother's room and he's been using it in his own bed for about a week now lol. It is quite warm for indoor applications, but he likes to be pretty warm and he's figured out if he unzips it about halfway he's more comfortable. I can't wait to try it out camping this summer. My only complaint is that I have to fix the string around the top, but that only broke because my 10 yr old daughter(who happens to be 5'2" and 150lbs) got into it to see if she could fit. She did(tightly), but when she tried to draw the strings closed, it came apart for about 3" at the seam. So, I wouldn't recommend this for anyone that size or above lol. For the people it's recommended for, I give it an A+. The fabric seems good quality and the zipper held up to someone much too large for the bag.

Listen to the negative reviews, they're not lying, March 29, 2011
By John Henry
|
|
This is a $20 sleeping bag, nothing more. You get what you pay for. If you want a nice camping bag, look to pay $50 or more. The outter material is so thin you could easily tear it at the seems. The stuff sack is made of the same thin material - and be careful if you open the box with a box cutter - you will slice right through the sleeping bag as it is not packed with a safety piece of cardboard over the top. The stuff material feels cheap and is not sewn to the outter covering in enough locations. You can pretty much pull the foot of the sleeping bag up through the inside leaving the outter layer empty like pulling a duvet out of it's washable cover. The kids pocket on the inside has a velcro closure which partially tore off the first time I opened it.
Having said that, the sleeping bag is fine for a summer camping bag or sleep-over bag. It certainly wouldn't be warm enough to call it a three-season or for 30 degree (F) weather. If you can get it for $20 like I did then it's a decent cheap sleeping bag that may last 5-10 years before it's torn in too many places to fix. I give it 4 stars because for it's price point it is what it is.

Great sleeping bag for little ones, January 10, 2011
By Jen (California)
|
|
I purchased 2 of these for my sons (age 6 and 4) and they love them!! The bags keep them so nice and warm when camping. We used these in Yosemite and it got rather chilly at night and the boys didn't wake up once because of being too cold. It has enough loft that it provides a little padding (my kids are pretty slight) but not too much as it fits in the stuff sack great. The zipper works well and the top works like any mummy bag (around the head). They probably have quite a few years out of them, my oldest is of average height and he can't reach the bottom. I would buy them again.

I purchased this sleeping bag for my five-year old son back in July 2009 and he has slept in it on numerous camping trips.
We don't mind the color, and he likes that it fits snuggly around him.
What really won me over, and why I am online purchasing two more for my twin boys, is that on one of those camping trips it was surprisingly cold. We were up in the San Bernardino mountains in October and the night-time temperature dipped to 30 Degrees. My husband and son were out in the tent, while I was sleeping in a warm trailer. The next morning my husband complained bitterly about how cold he was (he didn't use a properly rated sleeping bag), but my son said he was warm and slept comfortably through the night! Great sleeping bag for the price!!

This product arrived in a timely fashion and was exactly as described. My son likes the colors, appreciates the little pocket inside, and is working on mastering the cam lock & zipper. I'm entirely satisfied.

I purchased 1 for each of my kids, 3 and 5 years old, and they love them. Easy to care for, roll, soft and warm-couldn't have chosen a better sleeping bag for our 3 season camping trips.

My kids love this bag. Material seems durable enough to withstand lots of use. And it is warm enough for most activities. Have yet to camp with it, but we bought it for mostly indoor use and fun anyway.

My daughter loves her new sleeping bag, so far using it mainly for sleepovers at friends. She says she can't wait for our summer canoe trips and early season hunting trips together next fall.

Amazon charges you twice!, February 11, 2010

Amazon shipped the product first with UPS, where it got lost. They sent a replacement very quickly. now they charge me twice and have no process established to get it right. So: the product is great, but don't buy at Amazon!

Great sleeping bags for kids, but not to 30 degrees, May 17, 2012
By Mother of 4 (California)

My kids LOVE these bags. All 4 of them think they are the best bags ever. Or at least they did until we actually used them in cold weather (It dipped down to between 33 and 40 degrees and they kids were incredibly cold so we had to stuff the bags with blankets and double up on the pjs to sleep well). But they still love them and don't want anything else!

We bought this bag and the ladybug bag for our 4 and 2 year old. It was in the 40's at night, and my son was naked and sweating in his bag. Daughter, who tends to run less hot, was still toasty all night long. Great bags!

This was purchased for my six year old grandson for a birthday present. Should be perfect for his needs. Not sure how warm it would be in the early spring or fall, but summer camping will be a treat!

Love it!!, December 16, 2011

Ordered this sleeping bag for my 5 year old and he loved it. We needed it at a a fishing lodge we were staying at for Thanksgiving. I read the other reviews of it being made of cheap materials and falling apart. Mine seems to be well-made and sturdy. Looking forward to him using it for the coming years. Definitely kept him plenty warm.

My kid really likes this sleeping bag, December 9, 2011
By Exigent
|
|
My boy, who is 7 years old, said he really liked this sleeping bag. He thought it looked cool. More importantly, he said it kept him warm. We went camping in mid-November (in Southern California) and it was raining and got down to 48 degrees, but it kept him warm and he slept fine in it. (Granted, we were inside a tent, so we didn't really have to worry about the rain.) The bag was huge for him, so I'm sure it would be fine for a much larger, older boy.
