Previously sold as the Wilderness55, the Scout 3400 is perfectly sized for youth and the light backpacker. Complete with adjustable height shoulder straps, a rainfly compartment and rainfly, the Scout 3400 also features a padded water bladder pocket. Two side zippered pockets, side and front mesh pockets, and a top zippered pocket provide plenty of room for smaller accessories. A top-loading main compartment and a sleeping bag compartment complete the pack. Includes attached rain fly and is hydration system ready. Note that some product may say Scout 3400 while others will say Wilderness55, these are otherwise identical bags.
Boasting a compact main compartment that measures a mere 3400 cubic inches, the Teton Wilderness 55 internal frame backpack is ideally sized for the light backpacker or young camper. Comfort-wise, the Wilderness 55 is outfitted with dual aluminum stays that adjust to the shape of your back, along with contoured shoulder, lumbar, and waist pads. In addition, the height of the shoulder straps is adjustable, helping the pack accommodate a wide range of torso lengths. The upshot is a well-fitting, lightweight pack (4.5 pounds without gear) that won't put undue stress on your back and shoulders even after a full day of hiking.

On the interior, the pack holds a modest amount of gear in its top-loading main compartment and distinct sleeping bag compartment. Also present are several smaller pouches--a pair of side zippered pockets, side and mesh front pockets, and a top zippered pocket, to be precise--for storing such items as Swiss Army knives, snacks, and mini flashlights. And as with any good hiking pack, the Wilderness 55 has a padded pocket for your trail hydration water bladder (not included). The design concludes with a rain fly that keeps your gear dry in wet conditions.

Amazon.com Backpack Guide
Finding the Right Backpack
For extended trips into the backcountry, there's no getting around the fact that you'll have to carry life-sustaining supplies on your back. Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for a backpack:

Internal vs. External
Up until late 1970's, external frame packs--which consist of an exposed, lightweight metal frame attached to a fabric pack-bag--were the only thing going. In recent years, though, packs that place the support structure of the pack inside the pack, known as internal frame packs, have boomed in popularity.

The good news about internal frame packs is that they hold the weight of your load close to your body, making it easier to maintain your balance on uneven terrain. Meanwhile, internals provide stiffness and support, but they are not completely rigid, which makes them more flexible when you're doing active sports. With the added flexibility comes a high degree of compressibility, meaning you can use the pack's compression straps to cinch down your load and keep items from shifting and throwing you off balance. Internals also sport slimmer shapes that allow for more arm movement in all directions--another big plus for off-trail bushwhackers, skiers and climbers. Last but not least, internal frame packs offer a greater range of adjustability in the shoulder harness and hip-belt than external frame packs.

There are some negatives for internals. First, once packed, it can be difficult to grab needed items out of them quickly. And because internal frame packs consolidate the load into a single, body-hugging unit, proper packing is very important. To distribute the weight properly, you should pack your heaviest items close to your back and in the middle portion of the pack-bag. Plan on getting a sweaty back with an internal, too, given the fact that they are pressed right against you. Finally, internal frame packs are priced higher than external models.

External frame packs are very good at focusing the weight of a load directly to the right place: your load-loving hips. While internals, when properly packed, do this effectively, too, you can always rest assured that an external will distribute the load evenly, no matter how unevenly packed it may be. Externals also offer easy access to your gear via multiple, easily-accessible compartments. Plus, because externals don't situate the load directly against your back, you'll enjoy far more air flow. Finally, if you're on a budget, or you're buying for a growing child, externals are more affordable.

If you plan on hiking on easy to moderate trails and you don't need a lot of body movement, you'll probably be fine with an external. But because externals are so rigid and inflexible, challenging trails or any kind of off-trail pursuit can become painful and frustrating. Also know that your balance is far more compromised with an external frame pack during activities like stream crossings and hops through talus fields.

Packs for Shorter Trips
In addition to backpacks designed for overnight trips, rucksacks are great for day-trips, warm-weather one-nighters, single-day ski trips, or fast alpine assaults. Some rucksacks blur the line between backpack and rucksack with integrated internal supports and sophisticated hip belts and shoulder harnesses. Choose a pack in this category based on your intended use. Short day hikers don't need an internal frame, while climbers and skiers with heavier loads likely do.

Sizes and Capacities
Packs in the 3,000 cubic inches and lower category are good for day hikes or overnighters in warm weather with minimal gear. Packs in the 3,000 to 4,000 cubic inch range are good for one- or two-night trips in colder weather. If you're going to be out for up to three days, look for a pack in the sub-4,000 cubic inch range. Choose a pack with 5,000-6,000 cubic inches for week-long outings. And finally, for trips lasting a week or more, you'll need something in the 6,000-plus cubic inch category. Keep in mind, though, that bigger packs weigh more, and since every ounce counts, you'll want to choose a pack that offers just enough space for your outings and no more.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent pack for mid-entry level hiking, June 16, 2007
By floydian (PTown)
this pack is overall a good quality pack. It has tons of pockets and loops to hook many things on. I have walkies, knives, shoes and much more dangling from mine.

It's lightweight and the pack has lots of customization options. If you are a large person (6' 0" and up) this pack can conform to you!

I like the options, including the sleeping bag pouch. My sleeping bag barely fit though...It was a challenge to stuff my bag and get it zipped, let me tell you! Afterwards, I was able to place a tent, 4 days of food and clothes, a stove, lantern, pillow, pad, cups, walkies and so much more. Fully loaded for a summer hike kept me <29lbs!

This pack is very comfortable as well. The padding is very generous and again, the adjustment options are plenty! I felt very balanced when wearing this pack and I feel it will last for many years when I examined the stitching and build quality.

The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is that I specifically purchased this pack because it had a hydration pouch. Reading the instructions, it was very difficult to determine where exactly my pack was supposed to go. It's not very clear and when I finally figured it out, it was illogical because the pouch location is between your back and your load. For me, this was bad because I placed my pouch in there, filled it and tried on the pack. It was very uncomfortable having water sloshing between me and the pack. I did not have a very confident feeling when the pack was not on my back. Also, it created tremendous pressure on my system, so when I went to take a drink, I was flooded every time. I ended up placing the hydration pack on the outside vestibule which worked just fine.

Overall, this is great and I recommend this pack. Good luck with the hydration though. Perhaps that is where it is supposed to go, but it didn't seem normal to me.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great affordable pack, May 17, 2007
By Daddy D (Memphis, TN)
I will qualify this review by saying that I am not an expert backpacker. I got this pack for a three-day trip in the Smoky Mountains. We started out the trip on a rainy day. The built in rain cover worked really well, although it was not big enough to cover the pack AND a sleeping pad I had attached to the outside of the pack. As a result, my sleeping bag, which was at the bottom of my pack, the region left partially exposed, did get a little damp. It actually didn't get as wet as I'd expected, though ... it was pouring that first day. Had I been a bit more experienced a backpacker, I would have put my sleeping bag in a waterproof bag. All this to say that the rain cover works well for the bag, but won't necessarily accommodate extra things attached to the outside.

The bag has a compartment in the lower section for a sleeping bag. I was eager to try this out (to avoid unpacking my entire bag every night), however, my sleeping bag did not fit through the opening. It is not a super-compact sleeping bag, but it's also not bulky. The compartment was able to be opened to the rest of the pack, though and I simply put the sleeping bag in from the top (as it turned out, I had to unpack almost my entire pack each night anyway to get food and a change of clothes).

The bag is set up to be used with a hydration bladder (although it doesn't come with one). I was able to get one before my trip and was really pleased with the way it worked. The pouch for the bladder is inside the pack, so does require unpacking (or rearranging) to remove or replace the bladder, but as I said above, I was doing that each night anyway. It easily accommodated the 3-liter bladder I got, and it was nice to have water so easily accessible while hiking.

The only other thing I have to comment on are the external pockets. It has two mesh pockets on either side, and one on the lower back side of the pack. It also has two enclosed pockets on either side and one on the top of the pack. The mesh side pockets were too small to hold a Nalgene bottle (that would have been nice). I also think a couple extra pockets (or larger pockets) higher up on the sides would have been nice for more quick access options.

Overall, I thought this pack was great, especially for the price. It did very well for me on my trip of 3 days / 2 nights. I would definitely recommend it for someone like me who wants an affordable, reliable pack for occasional trips.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great backpack, February 28, 2007
By D. Kent
I bought this backpack last minute for a weekend in the columbia gorge area, It worked great. The backpack doesn't strain my back at all, the load felt very even. And the attached rainfly came in handy once as well. It comes with a bunch of extra attached straps to secure all the extras (tent rods, sleeping pad, rope, etc...) I am thoroughly impressed to have found a good pack for such a bargain price

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This really deserves a 4.5 star . . . still very happy with it., May 21, 2009
By Z (Z)
I am female, 5'6", and bought this as a replacement for my last pack. For the price, this was a better purchase than my 200-some-odd-dollar old pack. I travel for long periods at a time and needed something that could carry all my gear. The quality of the pack amazed me and it has all the buckles and pockets I could ask for. I easily fit my sleeping bag, tent, camera, tools, and a week's worth of clothes into the pack. *Please note* - I pack very light by male and female standards.

The sleeping bag pocket is definitely made for a legit 'backpacking' bag. You probably won't be about to fit something that you pick up at Target for $20. With the my backpacking sleeping bag, I was also able to squeeze a mallet and tent stakes in with it. If you do have a standard 30-40 degree bag, try putting it in from the top. There is a zipper at the very bottom of the pack that I almost missed while exploring my new toy.

Actually, the only reason this pack warrants the half star is that this pack is not made for girls. Sorry ladies. The adjustable torso is a great feature and gives great back support for me at my height, but no matter what I did, the little chest buckle would not fit comfortably across my female chest. I just have to leave is off and this does cause a shift in the weight of the bag. It is something that I can deal with, but it is defiantly something to think about before purchasing - especially if you are just starting out and not used to carrying a loaded pack.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  not bad, not great., May 4, 2007
By OnTheRocks (Caracas, Vnzla)
I've had this back pack for over a month now and I use it to haul my (heavy) climbing gear about. It has plenty of room, plenty of pockets and the double pull-close mechanisms for the main compartment work very nicely. All the sewings have held so far, however one of the plastic brackets of the auxiliary gear straps broke while holding my rope. Granted the rope is about 8lbs but if its not good to hold that then I'm not quite sure what it'll be good for. Maybe a tent *shrugs* I also found the sleeping bag compartment to be a little smaller than I would like, but its alright.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Teton Sports Wilderness 55 Internal Frame Backpack, May 27, 2007
By NW Scout (Portland, OR)
I bought this backpack for my son. We used it last weekend on a 3 day scout backpacking trip. In general, I was very pleased with the pack. My only complaint is the holder for the water bottles are not quite large enough, and do not fit a standardized naglene water bottle. Other than that the pack is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent scout backpack, December 31, 2007
By J. Simone (Lake Worth, FL USA)
I purchased the Teton Sports Wilderness 55 backpack for my boy who just entered the scouts. We just returned from a 25 mile backpacking trip on the florida trail and both the pack and my son held up well. This is a very nice pack for the money. I purchased it on sale from Amazon for $42 with free shipping. You simply can't get a better deal than this.

I highly recommend this pack for kids/scouts. It is a little small for adult week-long expedition pack.

It is heavier than it looks. Also, when stuffed it elongates rather than widens which causes more of a balance issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very comfortable & acommodates all of my gear!, September 8, 2007
By B. Proctor (Charlotte, NC)
I bought this pack for hiking. My most recent hike (my 1st, actually) proved that this pack has what it takes to carry all of the supplies I needed for my 3 day excursion into the Cumberland Trail in Tennessee.

I had a 2 Liter camelbak in the designated pocket and did not have problems with flooding, at all, and my water stayed very cool throughout the entire day (90+ degree heat - it was the middle of August!).

I would definitely buy this pack, if I had to do it all over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent for Backpacking, May 14, 2007
By Robert G. Shevlin (Sussex, NJ, USA)
I purchased this for my son, so we could go hiking with our Boy Scout Troop. It had plenty of room for all his gear, rings on the outside for some 'hiking necessities', you could access your gear through the top or bottom of the bag It also has a very nice rain cover in the bottom compartment. The frame s fully adjustable making it comfortable to carry, my son is very happy with the pack. I may order one for myself as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  teton hiking bag, June 7, 2011
By adam
the pack is absolutely exelent! It amazed me in every aspect. I did a thru hike of the appalacian trail last fall and i wish i took this pack instead of my army ruck. The reviews that i had read about the pack were a little shaky so let me clear all of that up the rainfly IS enough to cover the pack and gear hangin off of it dont let people tell you otherwise ive got a msr stove water filter and a nelgene 2 fuel bottles and a therma rest ridge rest all on the outside of my pack and the fly covered all of it encluding the pack! People will also say that it isnt enough room for a longer hike.... waaaa waaaa waaaa.. it is tooo i fit everything i took w me on the at food and water and i also could fit evan more to where my army ruck was maxed out completly this pack is almost too big any thing bigger than this and your heading into the arctic circle to live for the rest of your life. in my opinion this is a perfict pack for almost all hikers and should be big enough to cover any adventure this country can throw at ya. so yah over all five stars couldent find a single thing i didant like about the pack and its got so many little extras its like a christmas mourning.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Sturdy enough for air travel, May 14, 2007
By Chongyu Wang
Well, enough said about it being comfortable to carry, and that it has a nifty bottom opening to squeeze that extra set of clothes or stuff.

I've sent it through the checked in luggage when traveling on airplanes and it survived, though you might not want to put anything important in the top zip-compartment cos once i found it was open[even though it was not damaged. luckily nothing was lost, but i wun try that again]

Pretty sturdy and is a good bag for compressing your stuff with all the useful straps.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Good Pack!, September 3, 2008
By Camilo Velez (Bogota, Colombia)
I bought this backpack for my girlfriend and took it three weeks to south east Asia, no complaints what so ever! This pack is not that big, so its very usefull for short trips (one to two weeks), however for a tall man (6 feet or more) it can be a little short. For my girlfriend it was fine and fit her clothes for almost all the trip. The attached rain fly is very usefull. Regarding materials and quality, I would say it is durable and likely to come with us for more trips! For its price, a very good backpack.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent for backpacking, November 9, 2007
By Charleen Merced (Stamford, CT and sometimes in Puerto Rico)
I really like this backpack. It is very comfortable, has good padding and is big enough to fit a lot. The rain cover was a Godsend as it started to rain heavily when I last went on the Appalachian Trail. The backpack has space for a hydration bladder, not included. I did not find it uncomfortable to put my hydration bladder in the designated spot. I DID find it difficult to grab the hose thingy. I felt I had to reach to the very back of my backpack every time I wanted water.

The backpack has a lot of useful compartments and loops. I wish there was a good place to put my Nalgene bottle. I had to hook it to one of the straps with a carabiner. The side mesh pockets are not big enough for a Nalgene, although they are ideal for easy to reach snacks. The zipper at the bottom is very useful and I put there things I would use regularly so I would not have to unpack the entire thing. I also wish there were more places where to put a carabiner in.

I found it hard to fit my sleeping bag through the belts; it barely fit through and it kept sliding off the belts. I had to stop a lot to fix my bag.

Apart from this, this is a great and comfortable backpack. Excellent for backpacking a few days.

I like this backpack because it is easy to adjust so it fits a smaller and shorter person like myself. It has tons of room and many pockets to put all of your electronics, maps and other items that you need to get to easily. Looks like it should last awhile too. Great pack for the price.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Uncomfortable Straps..., August 23, 2009
By D. Sky
After trying this pack on, I have discovered that even though it fits my torso (and would fit many people larger or smaller, due to adjustable torso, the shoulder straps are at a strange angle and the inside edges bear the backward pressure of the pack into your shoulders too much. Basically my only complaint is uneven strap contact with the body. adjustment cannot correct for this. Otherwise a very affordable pack!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Just too small, July 31, 2008
By Gone 2 WYD
This is a pretty good backpack but it's just too small.
The fit is pretty good and was comfortable after getting it adjusted for my height but I don't know that someone over 6-foot could find enough adjustment.
Sleeping bag would not fit in the bottom compartment no matter how forcefully I tried to pack it in bit by bit.
The top compartment is convenient but the small opening to the rather small main compartment made it difficult to load and unload. Overall it doesn't hold very much gear. Glad the hike was only 2 miles in for a single overnight.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Probably the best bag you will ever find., May 5, 2011
By John G.
This pack is something! I first got this about 2 months ago when I was planning a hike with some friends and my normal pack broke apart. It performed perfectly on the hike and when fit to my back it felt pretty comfortable.

The hike was not a long one but rather it was a long stay so lots of water and food had to be taken. I was the only experienced one in the group and took about 4 days worth of freeze dried food from mountain house ( great stuff) for a 3 day stay because I knew someone would end up not brining enough food or having it spoil.

Well my pack held my sleeping bag, my 3 cup pot, my sterno fuel, 4 person tent, and all my clothes. My pad was strapped to the outside and was fit securely, I had a weterling axe attached to the outer loop at the bottom and my water pack in the designated sack inside as well as 3 bottles of water... Everything fit PERFECTLY.

If theres one thing I could say to do is unzip the bottom flap that leads to the sleeping bag pocket from the inside and you will have a Mc Mansion of a back pack. I bought the Mecca Orange version so i could find the pack in the dark and it is a VIBRANT orange yellow that stands out. The pack is filled to the BRIM with loops for anything and everything. I have a shovel strapped to the outside and my hammock ( an ENO hammock).

Great for even the most avid backpacker!
Great company. Great pack. period.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A Great Bug Out Bag, January 24, 2011
By Elliott (Madison, WI United States)
I'm not a big outdoors person, but I do like to camp. I purchased this bag to use as an emergency bag - stocked with items to last my family of 3 a few days outside in an extreme emergency. I love that this bag doesn't rely too heavily on zippers - although there are some - the tie-offs really can seal the majority of stuff into the bag. There's a spot for a small tent, which I haven't filled yet, and a waterproof cover for the pack, which is great. I already have packs of calorie bars, tools, first-aid kit, firestarters, some clothes, notebooks, and more packed in here with over half of it yet to fill. If you plan on packing a lot of clothes, you could probably use a bigger pack, but if you're looking for something to just hold one backup outfit and a ton of other outdoor stuff, this is a great deal.

One note, if you're thinking you'll be hauling a very heavy load, I'd really look for an external frame pack, as the internal frame models - though comfortable - probably won't be too comfy if they're over-stuffed.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great backpack for camping/scout camps, June 28, 2011
By SuperGirl (USA)
This is the best backpack. It is very nice looking and fits a ton of stuff. It is also very durable. While all the other campers had to make multiple trips to the vehicles and back this puppy held everything...protien bars, oatmeal, water, camp pillow, sleeping bag and pad, knife, clothes, pan, first aid kit and more. You can imagine how heavy all that would be but when you get it on with the hip belt and all it is pretty easy to carry. Happy camping to you all!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Pack, April 8, 2011
By B-Dubs
I bought this pack sort of on a spur of the moment. I recently got into hiking and camping more and decided to get this pack. It's definitely a good deal for the price. I'm not very experienced in packing so some of my stuff is bulky and heavy. I was able to fit many essentials in it but it would have been nice to have some extra space. The bottom sleeping bag compartment fits my cheap sleeping bag with some slight force. A large sleeping back will more than likely not fit. If you have a more expensive and smaller bag, it will fit with ease. I have an 8X8 tent that I folded up a bit smaller and put it in without trouble with the rest of my stuff. The cup holders fit a Nalgene water bottle very snug. The adjustable straps are pretty handy, although I haven't had to move them. The straps are padded for good comfort. For the few times I have used it, it is holding up very well. Experience packers will be able to use this pack for near a week. If you are beginning, it will get you through the weekend. It all depends how much stuff you have and what the size and weight of it is. More expensive gear seems to pack easier and lighter. Also, came quick in the mail! Overall, great pack.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Pack - Great Price, December 14, 2010
By R. Luckett (Mississippi)
Bought this right before my son and I went backpacking in the mountains, with his Scout Troop. Was really impressed with the amount of room available. Plenty of places to strap things to the outside. Sleeping bag access panel - a real plus. Shoulder straps and hip belt - great. Had found similar bags but with lesser quality AND more expensive. Took it for a week - will keep it for a lifetime. Ok, now the bad - the only bad thing was the packcover (and yes, it did rain). If you don't have anything strapped on (i.e. a tent, or sleeping mat)it works great. Personally, I am going to buy a bigger cover and put it in the compartment reserved for the pack's original cover.

Got this pack for a first time serious camping trip to Alaska and loved it. It was cheap, fit tons of stuff, was comfortable and adjustable, and had lots of straps and areas to attach things. It also fit as a carry-on on the plane, which was important. Overall, a great first time bag for a newbie camper.

By (CouldBe Studios, Matt Beck) (Portland, OR)
Took this on a 3 day trip down Skyline to the Sea from Big Basin, CA.

This is a smaller pack, but that's not really a complaint since it is clear when purchasing what size you are getting, just something to consider.

If you are planning long trips, you will be strapping a fair amount of gear to the outside of the thing.

My only real complaint is the side and sleeping bag pockets are a little on the small side. The main compartment is fine for me.

With my bearvault (BV500) strapped to the outside I had plenty of room inside for gear and i pack on the heavy side.

Total pack weight before adding water for this trip was ~45 lbs, I didn't have any trouble with the pack.

The pack is very comfortable, nicely adjustable and durable.

It's a little on the heavy side for it's size, so if you are looking for something for ultralighting, this is definitely not it.

Overall a very good bag, especially for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice!, June 22, 2009
By ESB (MA)
I bought this pack about a week and a half ago and received it today.
Cons:
-I noticed that the buckles are kind of cheap. They can be hard to unbuckle sometimes and if I brought this out in the winter, they would most likely break.
-The zippers aren't high quality, but you'll get that on a $60 pack so nbd.
-If you have a tent on your pack the rain fly might not fit all the way around the pack, but the material of the pack is pretty nice so it should be fine.

Pros:
-I was really worried about my sleeping bag not fitting but it went right in the pouch and there was even some extra room(this is with a 40degree bag).
-Tent fit nicely and is sturdy on the pack(I put it where the sleeping bag pouch is and used the straps provided).
-Once i packed everything into it, I tried it on and it felt very comfortable.

I'm looking forward to hiking with this. It was definitely a good purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Steal!, January 31, 2009
By wanderluster (Peoria, IL)
I bought this pack when it was 42.99 and I also got free shipping. It is such a great deal. Great pack with ample room...there were smaller ones than this one that were much more expensive. I highly recommend buying this pack.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good backpack for the price, March 6, 2008
By TJ (Honolulu, HI, USA)
I purchased this backpack 3-4 months ago. I am flying at least twice a year from Hawaii to Europe, and I needed backpack that is smaller then mine 90+ litres, since I was going for a shorter period of time. This backpack survived three flights in each direction without any damage ( I considere this a good proof of the durability). It is also very suitable for shorter camping trips, and long hikes (it can fit decent amount of stuff, in my opinion for 3-5 day hiking trip). Fits a bit high on my back ( I am 6 feet tall), but its very comfortable. Sleeping bag compartment is separated from main compartment, which is useful. Reason why i rated it 4 star is because I didnt tried to use water bag during hikes, so I cant tell if with it backpack fits equally well on the back. All in all, very good backpack for this price.

I received the backpack today and was surprised that it is green in color. The outlook is really part of my concern. And if it is green but not brown/grey in color, I would have bought another cheaper one. Teton Sports should do something!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  great pack for an amazing price, June 9, 2011
By ace717
I bought this oack for a 3 week backpacking adventure in Africa. I was very excited when I read someone said it was carry-on dimensions. I disagree...because it doesn't technically fit carry on dimension requirements when fully packed, however I left it empty on the very top compartment and was able to carry it on. I thought this pack was great. I traveled between 4 countries and never had a problem. Bottom line- for the price it is a great buy....however there are a few things I would like to change: 1: the back adjustment with velcro can scratch your back since it is not covered and is centered instead of 2 on the right and the left, which decreases stability. Also I wish there was double zippers so you could lock them. And another thing is the middle of the pack is large but impossible to retrieve objects compared to the bags that zip open like a duffle. But these issues are well worth over looking for the price. I would recommend this pack but would probably opt for a different one for my next purchase as there are convenience properties I really value.
But i think this is a great pack for $50....for other conveniences you will be looking at a minimum of a $100 pack.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect Fit, May 26, 2011
By wayneyb
This is great pack, I took it on a single day trip as soon as I got it just to try it out. I took way more gear than I really needed as I wanted to see how the pack fits and really test it out. I was snowshoeing in Little Cottonwoood canyon, Utah. For the price i absoloutly love this pack. Can't wait to get enough time to take on multi day trips.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Our First Backpack, May 8, 2011
By budshady
My wife and I purchased this pack primarily as a travel pack. So that is how we will review it. I worked great on our recent trip to Denver. We were able to pack clothes for a 5 day weekend with room to spear. It works great as a carry-on back. There are more than enough room and pockets for your stuff. We are very please with our purchase of this backpack as a travel pack. Maybe on day we will see how it performs as a hiking pack. We recommend with pack for the price, it is a great value. My wife has the orange and I have the green. Both are good choices.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  GREAT!, April 7, 2011
By Allison
I thought this backpack was awesome. When I first started I thought it was adjusted correctly but after the first mile, I had to readjust it. when I did I heard the squeaking that was mentioned earlier. But other than that it was a great pack. My friend that went with had major issues and our packs were about the same weight, but I had no issues and I have a semi-bad back. It was a great pack for my first trip. Hope to use it again soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great backpack for a three day weekend., March 21, 2011
By Wendell F
I got this backpack after weeks of researching all the different kinds. I went on a three day, 28 mile hike at Myakka River State Park, in Sarasota, Florida. This was my first hike, so I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a pack. The pack has plenty of room in it. I packed way to much because of it. In one of the side pockets I put all of my smaller stuff, mp3 player, fire starter, lighter, headlamp, and digital camera. And in the other I managed to fit 1.5 lbs of trail mix and a large package of beef jerky. In the top there are two pockets one on the outside and one on the inside. On the outside pocket I put my poncho, and first aid kit, and a pack of cigs. It has two mesh pockets on the side they are plenty big I put a 1 liter water bottle in each. They held fine and didn't fall out at all. The sleeping bag compartment is small but you can fit regular sleeping bag in it. I don't know if you could fit one of the winter bags. It is a tight fit but if you push, pull and zip enough you can get it in there. The zippers appear to be of high quality. The main part is very large, I fit 5 liters of water, two large cans of beef stew, and three days worth of clothes. I attached my tent and fold up stool on the bottom loops on the outside of the sleeping bag pouch. My pack weighed about 45 lbs when it was all packed. It was my first trip and I learned a lot like, don't wear boots, and don't pack to heavy. The only thing I have to say negative about this pack is the shoulder straps don't really have the padding I would prefer. My friend had a Coleman Hiking pack, his shoulder straps had/ a lot more cushioning on it. And the things holding on the chest straps are always falling off and I had to slide the chest connector up the shoulder straps every time I took my pack off. I can think of nothing else negative to say about it. Overall excellent pack, for a steal of a price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Its a deal, July 18, 2010
By Bryce
This is by far the cheapest backpack for sale that I have found and it works well relatively speaking. It is not a replacement for a 200$ nice functional backpack but it is great for beginners and it gets the job done for small trips. I love the separate sleeping back compartment as well as the outside tie straps. My biggest complain were that some of the seams seemed a bit torn when I used it for the first time but nothing too terrible. My second complaint is this backpack is not meant for people taller than 5'10. The hip strap cannot be adjusted well enough to balance the weight. But as I said earlier for someone who is just getting started and might not even take up backpacking as a passion, 50 bucks for a pack is a steal.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome pack, August 28, 2009
By Blipjockey (Central Rockies)
I did a lot of shopping for this style of pack and this was cheaper by almost half from any other similar pack I could find. I was a little nervous about the quality since it was so much less than the competition but I was very pleased at its construction. It is an awesome pack, especially at this price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Teton backpack, June 11, 2009
By Christi L. Chapman
This is a great pack, and just as described. The only reason I gave it four stars is because the zippers are not of the highest quality. One of the side zipper pockets gets caught on its side lining. Not the end of the world, especially when you consider the price of this pack.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  comfortable, February 3, 2009
By frisco gypsie (San Francisco)
Its smaller than what i expected. My sleeping bag never had a chance fitting into the sleeping bag compartment. But I was surprised you can just unzip it to link it to the main compartment. Has a lot of straps to hook stuff on. And the mesh pockets are small but very useful. I haven't tried my bladder with it yet, but I found it to be in a awkward location because its between your back and all your stuff. All in all it a decent pack. Its a great pack but not perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  WONDERFUL, August 12, 2007
By Katie (Milwaukee, WI USA)
I bought this backpack for a trip I am going on next May to Alaska, it looks exactly like it is pictured, I love it!!! I will update you next May on how it works for my trip if I don't use it before then.
**UPDATE**
I did use this while I was in Alaska, and let's just say my sister had one and was supper jealous of me, mines was a little bigger, more pockets, and it was the most comfortable backpack with all the straps to keep it in place. I let my siter try it on, and she couldn't believe how comfortable the padding that touched your back was...Defintiely still love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Product, September 1, 2011
By wayne robert ivey
I like this backpack and recommend it, however, I was surprised that the backpack is not as large as I thought it would be, but this has its advantages: (1) it is light (of major importance to me), (2) it is less likely to catch on limbs or sticker weeds, (3) going under trees and heavy brush is easier. I like how the pockets on the side and in the back are protected and how the top bag is securely attached to the backpack; also, I can attach my light sleeping bag and light tent to the backpack. For me as a hiker/prospector/detectorist, I could not find a better backpack; it even has D rings on which I can attach a bungee cord that, on the other end attaches to the metal detector. The padding is adequate, not quite as heavy as an over $200 backpack, nor does it have a mesh for cooling the back (I don't mind and the less weight the better). Overall, a great buy - well constructed, light, good price, and roomy enough for my needs.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice for the money!, August 23, 2011
By Lunacy
I bought this for a canoeing/camping trip and it worked out great, plenty of storage, lots of places to atach other items, nice adjustable shoulder straps etc. I was just as pleased with this as my friend was with his 200.00 back-pack that was the same size. Not sure how it will stand the test of time but if it lasts me 3-4 summers im still coming out ahead.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for the purpose, August 23, 2011
By James (Wyoming,USA)
I'd been looking for a backpack that was going to fit my torso (being 6'2), not be too big (being 160 lbs), hold all of my stuff and yet not hold me back. I bought this bag on a whim because I had a couple extra dollars and to my surprise I had found the pack that fits- at least better than any other I've found....I took this pack up rock faces and back down, through rivers (not saying its water proof), all over the Rockies, rolled down a couple hills, and this bag hasn't quit on me yet. It's a nice sized bag if your packing for only a couple days so if you are looking for an extended stay on your hike, this pack probably wouldn't work for you. My two issues with the pack is the size of the sleeping bag compartment, it's a little small but in all fairness I expected that, and the straps were a little long. It seemed like I had so many straps on this bag I didn't know what to do with them all!! But that is easily fixed with a knife and a lighter to shorten up the straps. All in all, I am very happy with this purchase and if anything ever did happen to the bag, I would probably just buy another one I like it that much.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  One nighter stuffer, July 19, 2011
By Jaime Villarreal (Scummyvale CA)
This was a good bag for me because I was able to pack for the first time in the 35 pound range, including a three liter bag, which felt wonderful! It felt snug, like my Rim Runner, only a littler bigger. My sleeping bag was impossible to fit in the compartment, so fortunately it unzips and I was able to stuff the bag vertically next to my tent. Because of this, getting a long sleeping pad would be nearly impossible - use one of the newer Nalgene bottle size pads. Be careful when lifting the bag to put on, if you grab from the back, the Velcro can come off and you need to redo the shoulder straps: use the handle. Side pockets could be made bigger: it's made for the small water bottles.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  a decent pack, June 13, 2011
By mdrook
I will probably revise this one way or the other after my trip but So far I think the pack will be ok. Part of me wishes I had gone with a bigger pack but all that will do is allow me to take things that I dont need. this pack will prevent me from doing that and Im sure my back will thank me later. The zippers seem to be of quality material. However I think the clip on the chest strap is a bit flimsy but we will see how it holds up on a trip to the Pharaoah lake wilderness.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  So Far, So good, June 6, 2011
By swavery2003 (homer, mi United States)
Bought these for my two Webelos Scouts for their advancement into Boy Scouts. My son has used his and it works really well. It has plenty of room and has a number of places to hook carabiners on to carry items on the outside of the pack. There are straps for carrying both a bed roll and a sleeping bag. My son is just shy of 5' tall, the other Scout is about 4.5', this bag will work for a while for the both of them since it will adjust to their heights over the next couple of years.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  First Backpack, June 1, 2011
By jenmac
I haven't used it myself as I bought this for my 12 year old son. The sleeping bag pouch is small and saying it's difficult to get the bag inside is an understatement. It has several pouches or pockets and adjusts to many different torso lengths which is really nice. He seems to really like it and the price was great.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  it works. price is right. not the best, but a good bag., April 22, 2011
By FREEMAN
im pretty happy with this little wanker. ive taken it out a couple times. no major issues. ive had a zipper tear while i was on the trail once, but i taped it up for the remainder of the hike, and when we set up camp i sewed it up with the little kit i carry. good as new. its got plenty of storage for a couple day trip, it is comfortable, and it seems to be holding up pretty well otherwise. it was a great buy. i would highly recommend. if you are looking for something a little but nicer and dont mind spending a little more cash, check out HIGH SIERRA bags. they are a little bit nicer. next bag i buy with be an upgrade to a high sierra Appalachian 75 liter bag. but this will work for now.

I have never purchased this type of backpack before and was worried about all the choices. This is the perfect backpacking bag for the price. Extremely easy to carry, plenty of room, and quality made. The zippers are not as easy to zip as I would like but that is a minor detail I can over look for a $50 backpack.

By Floridamom
We were so excited to find this product on Amazon for such an incredible price. We had been looking for several weeks for a backpack for my son's trip to France, to study abroad. We considered using one we already had and buying a seperate rain fly but the rain fly cost almost as much as this new backpack, that comes with an attached rain fly! My son loves this backpack and has been using it in Europe for two weeks now. Plenty of room, lots of pockets and very comfortable. I would definitely recommend this product.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great pack, February 9, 2011
By bob
Despite the reviews of the sleeping bag compartment being too small, I still decided to purchase. The first time I put my 0 degree bag in the compartment it took me about 20 minutes (for real) and I had to remove it from the compression sack, the second time it took only about 10 minutes and now I can stuff it in there in a few minutes. There is an extreme amount of pressure on the zippers and I hope they hold- so far so good. I like everything else about the pack and cant wait for the weather to break and hit some trails.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great price for what you get!, July 15, 2010
By Alex Sin (PORTAGE, MICHIGAN, US)
I've been looking for a new backpack for a hiking trip I take every year in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. My last backpack was torn up by some animal that wanted to get to my fruit bar, so needless to say I was searching for a backpack. Most websites and stores had decent backpacks for a ridiculous price! I found many bags that did not have sleeping bag compartments, not many side pockets, or many straps to connect things to the bag. When I got this in the mail I was amazed on the size for how much I paid. What I really liked about this bag is that it has many straps, holds a lot (if you know how to back right), and even has a rain cover! If you want a backpack that isn't over priced for what you get, I would highly recommend this backpack!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Totally impressed, June 28, 2010
By Jennifer Lynn Jordan
I'll admit I was a bit skeptical because the price was so decent, but I was completely impressed with this pack!! Took it for a 5-day trek through the Appalachian Trail in PA and it held up great. I definitely tested it, too. (I ended up stuffing most of my kids stuff into my pack and trust me... the seams hold up great). It wasn't easy terrain either, we did a lot of climbing.

For the price, it's definitely worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fantastic backpack., May 30, 2010
By "Pasadena Phil" (Pasadena, CA USA)
I bought this for 2-4 day hikes and like comment #1, I can load it up and keep it well under 29 lbs. But unlike other commenters who complained about the hydration bladder compartment, my Platypus 3-liter hydration bladder fits perfectly. No problems.

The water (5.5 lbs), dome tent (5 lbs), backpack (4 lbs), sleeping bag (1 lb)and Katadyn water filter (20 oz) combined for about 17 pounds. Everything else was more mass than weight. If I go with a pup tent instead of the dome tent, I can get the weight for a four day hike down to under 25 pounds. If you hike with a group, you might be able to include the dome tent and still keep it under 25 pounds per man.

The key is to pack carefully. Figure out in advance what you'll likely need as you hike and keep those things easy to get at. You can hook lots of things (knife, compass, mace, insect spray, etc...) to the straps. Seriously, what do you really need so fast that can't be hooked up or put in the netting or many external pockets?

I would not hesitate to recommend this product. Good quality at a great price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bang for your Buck, March 15, 2010
By R. Wheeler (Arkansas, USA)
This is a very good pack for the money. It appears quite sturdy and I had no issues with durability on its one trip out so far (about 8 hour hike with 25 lb). It's quite adjustable, but I had some problems with the angle at which the straps meet my shoulders, and that wasn't adjustable. All the external pouches could be a bit bigger, and only the lightest of summer-weight sleeping bags is going to fit in the "Sleeping Bag Compartment." If you want a pack that fits you like a glove that you can leave to your children... keep looking. If you want an occasional use camping pack or a economical spare pack, this is a good one.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Pack, definitely consider this one!, July 9, 2009
By Mat (Baltimore, MD)
I bought this pack originally for the price. It looked to be good quality and the price was very right. I am extremely happy with it. In fact, I recommended it to a friend who is also extremely pleased. Pretty lightweight and very sturdy. There are lots of pockets and areas to tie up what won't fit in the pack. The pack is super comfortable once you get down the correct way to pack it. The rainfly works great as well. There are much lighter packs out there, but if you aren't trying to go ultralight this is a good choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Small, March 17, 2009
By Huh? (A starbucks near you)
I didn't realize how small it would be. Still I've managed to get my sleeping bag into the bottom compartment and am now using it to store my 4 season tent. With a few bungy cords this bag will do fine in the woods.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works for me, February 10, 2007

If you have to lug 40 plus pounds of gear around, get a decent pack. This one fills the bill nicely.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good pack, July 24, 2011
By sumguyaj
nice pack. sturdy, pretty roomy, have not fully tested this outdoors, but im sure it will do the job. feels like it needs a small net pockets or somthing in the main compartment. also if you have a water blader it might get in the way of items in your pack because the blader sits on the main pocket.not that big a deal tho, over all it's good.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for travel, July 16, 2011
By BokkenRyanZX 20XX (APO, AE United States)
I haven't got a chance to put this bag to the test, but so far it has been able to carry plenty of things and has decent compartments. It fits comfortable enough though I wont say this is the most amazing bag it is great for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great, esp. for the price, July 15, 2010
By Kathleen M. Ryan
Haven't tried it for camping or outdoors per se, but took it on an urban trip and found it great for my purposes, once I got some sense of all its "hidden spaces." Fit on me very comfortably -- I'm a tall F; d/k if my height helped or hurt. But I never felt the back strain I'd had with a similar backpack (different brand; probably different vintage/design entirely) I'd had years ago and had taken through Europe and Japan. Zippers concerned me a bit because some are curved and getting the edges to match so the zipper could slide along not always easy. But metal mechanics seemed to be operating once I got everything into position. D/K how well the pack "wears" over many trips and many climates. But my initial introduction to this product has been very positive.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Gran bolso, October 16, 2008
By Celia Daniz (Maracaibo, Venezuela)
Es un exelente bolso si solo tienes que que pasar una o dos noches acampando, su construccion es fuerte y duradera y se puede caminar durante tiempos prolongados con el a cuestas ya que se siente bien en la espalda.
Exelente producto.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  pleased, overall, March 16, 2008
By Brazista (New York, NY)
the bag is more sporty and attractive than it looks in the pic - i was pleasantly surprised. it was definitely smaller than i expected, and i would not count on it for anything longer than a 2-3 night stay. lots of lovely compartments and pockets to store and organize things, too!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Un buen bolso, February 27, 2009
By d'-.-'b (Maracaibo, Venezuela)

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Cheap but uncomfortable, February 7, 2010
By K (Belgium)
The backpack is not at all comfortable and I would not recommend it to someone who would use it much. But considering its low price, its still worth buying it, if you wont be walking around too much.
