Buy A Real Taillight if you ride on roads, August 25, 2007
By T. Miller (Indiana)
|
|
I was hit by a car using this taillight. If you are serious about safety then buy a real taillight and spend the extra money. I still have the light on my bike and use it in conjunction with another light but live in fear every time a car passes me now. Look at Dinotte taillights if you are on the roads early. They have videos on youtube that will show you how bright they are. I am saving money for one of their systems. The topeak tailight will cost you about $6.00 to replace batteries also since it uses a cr2032 like remotes for cars. I have also read many good reviews on the cateye 1100 taillight. Safety is the key when you are riding at night. This light might be good for trail riding.
Update to review. This light failed me this morning in wet conditions. It was not raining, but water from sprinkler systems on the road came off the rear wheel and hit the light which was attached to topeak bag. When I returned home the light was no longer on and water had entered the casing. Luckily I had a second light going.
Update - Still lingering on my bike as a second light. Bought the cateye 1100 as a replacement which is a phenominal light as far as ouput, functions and intensity. I Just finished washing my bike and the Topeak light turned on by itself. This light is wacky, stay away from it. Product reported to Consumer Product Safety Commision for review.

Not so bright, July 1, 2007
By Rollie (San Jose)
|
|
I'm changing my review after two months of use. Yesterday the unit broke off my topeak trunk rack when loading it in my car trunk. I will not replace it with the same light. Before it broke it looked like the clip mount was also breaking anyways. It just was not bright enough. There is another light I have which is much stronger called the planet bike superflash, which I will buy a second one and have two mounted.

Accidently left on, June 25, 2007
By Starving Student (Sacramento, CA USA)

In my town anything that isn't bolted down to your bike will get stolen (and on occasion someone will cut through double locks and steal your whole bike, but that is another story). This light is good for what it does, but since I carry it in my bag it turns on very easily and then of course runs out of batteries. That is my only real complaint though - I do appreciate that it goes on and off the bike so easily.

Great little bike light, June 9, 2007
By Teacher and Artist (Waltham, MA United States)
|

This light was a replacement for a previous bike taillight that died. I was concerned at first about its size, but it is very visible - the LEDs are powerful, and it can be angled to the best visibility. It comes with various ways to attach it to the bike or a pack, and I found the pieces versatile enough to come up with my own solution. A great buy for the money.

Almost Perfect, March 8, 2007
By Paul A. Landry (New Iberia, Louisiana)
|
|
I finally found a taillight that is almost perfect. Small, bright and uncomplicated. Only three functions: on, blink, off. Fits conveniently on the back of my saddle bag. Highly visible. If I could change only one thing about it, it would be to have it use a more "standard" battery (AAA, or AA), as opposed to a watch-style battery, so that I could utilize rechargeable batteries instead of adding used batteries to the trash collection.

Topeak lets me down a bit, August 23, 2008
By Woobey (Lynden, Washington)
|
|
Let me start by saying that in my relatively short time biking, I have found Topeak to produce very nice items. For the record, I also own a Topeak rack and bags that are both outstanding products.
HOWEVER... my newly acquired Topeak Redlite is a huge disappointment. Let me explain why...
On the back of my Topeak rack, there is a small metal bracket that is supposed to be for attaching Topeak brand lights. I imagine if you look up Topeak racks, you could see this small bracket. Unfortunately, once you purchase a Topeak light, you find that it doens't fit the bracket at all. After a lot of frustration, I ended up attaching my light to the back of the bag itself, held on by what I consider a fairly flimsy clip. Definately not what I had envisioned, or hoped for. I don't forsee it falling off, but it would be very easy to steal if someone wanted to take it.
Secondly, upon receiving my light I was very surprised at just how tiny it is. I guess I'll have to pay more attention to the technical information on items I plan to purchase in the future, but I had expected this light to be a couple inches across, about the width of the bracket on my Topeak rack. No such luck. A very tiny light that almost looks out of place in size comparison to my other Topeak items.
In regards to function, the light seems to operate fine. It's very bright, easy to use, and it has two modes (flashing and solid) to choose from. In my opinion, the function of the light is it's only saving grace, and all that kept me from rating it even lower.
Overall, I give my Topeak Redlite experience 2 out of 5 stars. I will be looking for something more substantial to replace it with.

Good light, lousy mounting bracket, October 4, 2007
By jwatne (Minneapolis, MN USA)
|
|
This light LOOKED like it would be very effective at night. However, I never got the chance to try it out in the dark. I mounted it to the bracket on my recently-purchased Topeak MTX E-Type rear luggage rack exactly according to the directions. The light was securely fastened -- or at least as much as the mounting bracket allowed. On my first ride with the light attached, it somehow got shaken loose and fell off at some point in this short, just under 10 mile commute.

USEFULL LIGHT FOR PROBLEM BIKES !!!, September 18, 2008
By Felix The CAT (ohio)
|
|
Topeak red light with ultra-slim housing.
Super thin and compact profile fits in where standard bike taillights don't! Light output is WEAK at best, distance visibility
is non existent, HOWEVER this is better than NO LIGHT at all!!
I am constantly bewildered why bicycle manufacturers can't agree on using a standard sized battery.
Topeak red light uses the 2032 flat battery, which helps maintaining
it's slim profile however these sized batteries are not as available as AA or AAA series, and is more costlier.
Nice rubber-coated, water resistant on/off switch. Housing seems to be reasonably durable & moisture resistant. Lens is durable however optics are not as sharply designed as they could be.
I gave this taillight 3 stars, because it does apply itself well to those problem bicycles like chopper & customs, in which this may be the only solution. The included "rubber band" mounting system helps to attach this lamp to chainstay, seatstay and other problem frame areas.

This light absolutely sucks, November 8, 2007

Don't waste time or money on this garbage - you can't mount it, and the replacement battery is very expensive. Useless!

Small but powerful. This light will let cars see that you are ahead of them. The LEDs will help you safely ride at night.

it's ok, but..., May 3, 2011
By Christopher Tan (Singapore)
|

i can't say too much for it's water resistance.. i was doing a 30mi ride in a very light drizzle, and by the time i got home, i realised that the light was on, and it could not be switched off. taking it apart, i noticed that the batteries were a little wet from the road spray.
i think my light is gone..

Bike light, July 23, 2010
By Mark H.
|
|
One of the guys in our ride group had this light. He loves it and I share the same sentiment. I was using clip on blinking lights but they kept bouncing off and breaking. This light is bright, has great blinking options, is easy to put on and stays on. I turn it on when I'm out on a morning ride or if it's getting dark in the evening. Great light for the price.

It's OK, May 25, 2010
By Jeff B (Denville, NJ)

This is a nice compact and bright flasher. However, my problem is that the plastic rails on the light body that slide onto the mounting bracket broke not too long after I bought it. I still use it, but I wedge it into the back of my helmet.

Good Rear Blinky, December 7, 2009
By Matt (TN, USA)

I wouldn't call this light "ultra-bright" but it works and the clip is perfect for the Topeak Aero Wedge Pack. It's a good value and so far has had good battery life.

Small and powerful, May 7, 2009
By V. Lo
|
|
I was surprised by how small it is compared to my old one. I always like Topeak products and this is another good one. It clips on easily, both on the seat post and onto my Topeak trunk bag. It has LEDs on both sides which make it very visible from the side as well.
Of course, if you plan to do some night commuting or early morning commuting, I high recommend wearing a reflective vest and a powerful headlight.
Long term review (2010-09-29)
I do a lot of early morning riding (before sunrise) and I soon ditched this light and replaced it with a Planet Bike Superflash. I had been stopped by police and drivers in the morning, telling me how bright my superflash was and said it was indeed a good light, as they can see my from 1 mile away. I don't think the Topeak 4-LED light is in that category.

stays put, March 25, 2009
By Ada Nunez (Aventura , FL USA)
|
|
My child falls a lot and the light keeps in place, the neighbors love it, we live in miami and it is so hot that during summer the only good time to ride is at night, if you ride your bike on streets with a lot of trafic you better buy a light that can be seen 360 degrees and more leds. Other thing that I like is that it has clip so for my daughter that skates , she can just clip it on her clothing and make herself visible.

Save your money..., January 20, 2009
By Mike
|
|
I would not recommend this light to anyone who values their time and money. Your time - because you will waste some looking for a new light in a matter of months. Your money - because even if you do not break it you will be buying expensive batteries to keep it running. Not water proof or resistant - I live in Monterey, California and we do not get much rain out here, nor do I like to ride in the rain. That said this light was ruined by what little water it came in contact with or by the process of changing out the rusted batteries for new ones. Whichever the cause...it is a testament to quality and/or durability. Bottom line is this light is cheaply made! I am now looking for a light that uses a more common/cheaper battery (like AA or AAA) and that is actually water resistant!

I really like this light, July 18, 2008
By CD (Japan)
|
|
I commute at night on heavily trafficed streets. My theory is that you can never have enough blinkies and if you don't look like a Christmas tree, you're doing something wrong. I really like this light because it is so small but so bright. I have two of these as tail lights. One is on my seat post, the other is velcro'd to the rear of my helmet (I'm such a Fred). I ride in all weather and after a year of use, neither has ever failed me. The added bonus is that this light comes with two different attachment options... one is a plastic piece that you can attach to the seatpost by a rubberized band, and the other is a clip that allows you to attach it to a pocket of a pack (however, I don't like the clip very much because it doesn't allow you to keep the light pointed where you need it). The light is very easy to attach and remove... a nice feature if you park your bike where people might be tempted to take things off of it. As much as I like this light, however, I wouldn't use it as my sole source of rear lighting if you ride much at night. It is best when used in combination with one or two other blinkies to give yourself the best chance to be seen.

Great Buy, November 17, 2007
By Your life may be the only Bible .. (Greenville, SC USA)

Great product for price paid, I love the compact size, and the methods for attaching the light are great, L.E.D.'s are very bright, Product feels very durable, and to top it off the products water resistance is great if you plan ride in the rain. The only disappointment was the lack of presets (all it can do is Blink and be constantly on)

Compact and Smart, April 3, 2007
By Umair Lateef

Pros: This product is compact and smart.
Cons: The only flaw is that it takes the watch battery which I dont know how long will run and how hard will it be to replace. The company promises a good life out of the battery .... lets see.
