Does it all, February 15, 2007
By Edward V. Hawk (Atlanta, GA)
|
|
I've got the MTX DXP bag, and Explorer rack combo, and was quite pleased with both. The rack was reasonably easy to install, came with decent instructions, and is quite solid. Also has a nice spot to place your tail light on the rear of it, which actually makes it more visible than when it's mounted to your seat post. I should mention, when installing to an aluminum frame, be careful. The screws are steel, and if your frame is aluminum like mine, it can be quite easy to crossthread the bolt holes if your not careful. A good way to prevent this is to lube the threads of the screw before installing. It will then prevent dragging when hand tightening, and keep you from having to use a hex wrench until it's time to put some torque on it. If it's not going in smooth, you'll want to make sure your not starting a cross thread before tightening, or else you'll find yourself at the bike shop trying to get aluminum rethreaded. Not an easy task for even the best cycling mechanic to do, I can tell you.
The bag though! I was a bit worried site unseen that it was going to look on my bike like I was hauling a black nylon refrigerator around. It's not that big, and looks quite nice on my bike. The rack system and integrated quick lock are great. Not only is it easy to get on and off the rack, but the REAL reason it's such a good system is that most bags, unless stuffed full, will list or flop to one side or the other. Can be a real pain in the arse. This one is rigid, and stays put, empty or full. It's been mentioned that the bag is heavy; well, if your putting this on your 16lbs. race bike, your a tard. It's not heavy at all for what it is, although it gives the illusion of being heavy, as it puts your bikes center of gravity off from what you may be used to (read, tail heavy). I can fit a 2 liter of soda in one of the panniers, a newspaper without folding it, a 10 lbs. bag of ice (it's a stretch, but you can fit it, just not able to zip it up), or similar large, heavy items of that sort. The main compartment isn't exactly big, but it will hold clothes, breakfast, lunch, dinner, minor camping supplies, and you can mount a sleeping bag to the top of it. Perfect size bag for 2-3 day excursion.
I use mine primarily for commuting, and that quick run to the store. You can load it with a surprising amount of stuff, and it is VERY stable. It takes a bit more than you might be used to in order to get your bike up to speed, but once your going, you don't even notice the weight. I've had no problem with my feet clearing the panniers, either standing, or sitting, and I have a fairly small bicycle frame, w/ 175mm cranks. So if anyone would of had a problem with this design, I would have, and I have tons of clearance. Can't say much about the rain proofness (word?) of this bag, as I've yet to ride it for a long period of time in heavy rain, but I have read that 1 hour in heavy rain, stuff inside is still dry. More than that, and I'd get a rain cover.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a decent bag for commuting or light touring (the bag is quite tough, just not super huge, the only reason I say 'light touring'). It's large without being huge, it is probably the most stable bag system out there, and is quite well made. I don't have any complaints about the bag, really, save one: I would have liked to see more external pockets on this bag, for things like keys, carbogel, tubes, tools, etc... but it does have a smaller top compartment for just such things, which works just as well. The panniers are the best integrated design I have ever seen. Just simply awesome, they fold out super easy, and are a breeze to zip back up (no origami, they just flip up, zip up, and their gone). They seem quite stout to boot, and as I mentioned, they are completely out of the way.
Hope this helps, if you were thinking about getting this, but weren't sure, just be aware of what your getting. Yes, it will ad weight to your bike (duh). No, you can't put $150 work of groceries in it. But yes, it's stable, strong, and you can certainly put $50 worth of groceries in it, no sweat. Once you're used to it, you won't imagine how you used that stupid backpack for so long.

Topeak Trunk Bag (MTX DXP), March 10, 2007
By Ron Kokish (Carbondale, CO)
|
|
I've had one of these for years - it's practically indestructible. The quick on/off feature is nice but you have to buy a matching Topeak rack for each bike you use it on or take time to switch the rack along with the bag every time you change bikes. I move mine between several bikes that have standard Mt. racks ,so I removed the "quick-bean" section. I just secure the bag to each Mr. rack using its Velcro straps. That takes around 30 seconds, the bag never comes off, I avoid carrying around maybe an extra 1/2 lb of unnecessary hardware and I get a (very) little bit of extra space in the main compartment. If you plan to use this bag on only one bike, don't already have a rack on that bike and don;t mind a few extra grams, the matching quick on/off rack may work well enough. However, I recommend against the kind that attaches quickly to only the seat post. I have a friend who uses one of those and it never seems to quite remain in position when the trunk bag is loaded.
This bag (MTX-DXP) is sturdy and HUGE. It even has an extra drink bottle holder and a place to clip in a rear light. Keep the stuff you want to get to during your ride in the top section (or better yet, in a handlebar bag), open the expander section and panniers, and there's plenty of room for grocery shopping or even a trip several days in length, especially if you aren't camping.
All this room does come at a price. The bag weights a couple of lbs, so you may not want to keep it on your bag all the time. A smaller, lighter bag might serve better for everyday use. Also, make sure you have enough heel clearance for the generous panniers and a rack big enough for the trunk when all the expander pockets are filled.

Tons of Room - Good Construction, July 13, 2007
By R. D Johnson (Cedar Ridge, CA USA)
|

I bought this in conjunction with the Topeak rack system Topeak Explorer Bicycle Rack with Disc Brake Mounts for my 2007 Specialized Rockhopper. It slides easily on and off the rack and the amount of cargo capacity is amazing. There's room for two spare mountain bike tubes in the rear pocket, a strap for a clip-on rear light, a top map pocket, and a cavernous main trunk. Unzipping the side pockets yield two large panniers, but I've never had occasion to use them yet because so far everything I've needed to carry for my recreational rides has fit in the main trunk. After 6 months and 1000 miles of riding the bag is still in great shape.

After a few months, February 11, 2008
By mvadventure (Florida)
|
|
Eventually I removed the rack and replaced it with wire pannier/saddlebags simply because when loaded and on the kickstand the weight of the left bag pulled everything to that side causing an imbalance which became noticeable when riding. Keeping my load in the side bag, even secured in the wire baskets caused the center compartment to lose shape and to compress.
After about six weeks (from new) the zippers and stitching began giving way and eventually destroyed the ability to pack the side bags back into the compartments.
I gave up on the system and wound up securing a heavy duty soft sided drink cooler to the wire pannier/saddlebags as a center compartment and sold the Topeak rack on ebay and junked the Topeak trunk bag. The Topeak rack lasted six months, the bag nine months. I do believe if you're carrying lighter weights the system is great, well thought out and very likely satisfactory but I was carrying about 22 pounds in each saddlebag which proved too much for the system.

Great bag for commuting and touring, March 13, 2007
By -jeff (Saint Peter, MN)

I purchased both the MTX DXP and the Explorist frame from Amazon. Upon receiving the product, I was impressed by the quality and thoughtful planning that went into the bag. I spent a lot of time evaluating bicycle bags and the Topeak meets all of my expectations.
I commute with my bicycle to and from work daily and need to carry my work clothes along with me. I find the quick release mechanism foolproof and solid.
The separate map case section at the top is a wonderful organizing feature. The side pannier pockets are designed in such a way that you actually have even more organization in the sides than you thought possible.
By my estimation, everything was very well thought out on this bag, and it is easy to use and work with.
It is a heavy bag, and not really for competitive bicyclists trying to shave off ounces. It's solid construction makes it great for daily commutes and for riding on rails-to-trails and touring.
The Explorist rack has a very solid feel and goes together quite well. One tip I would give would be to buy and place small rubber washers at the contact points to the frame, and apply threadlocker to the rack attach screws. The result is a very nice rugged and silent fit.
I am very pleased with the product and would highly recommend it to others.

Turned my bike into something more, February 20, 2008
By Some Guy (Palm Bay, FL USA)
|
|
I bike commute and have found that this trunk bag actually adds a new dimension to what I can do. It provides such a high degree of on-the-fly flexibility that I almost never need to resort to a car in my commute. For instance, on the way home I swung by a grocery store to pick up some things and got carried away. After checking out, I looked down in the shopping cart and saw the bag (it is great that it easily detaches) sitting next to 18 cans, 3 lb of carrots, a box of crackers and wondered if I would get the bag to swallow it. I deployed the panniers, raised the expansion on the top and still had plenty of room left over. I stuffed my jacket in as well and still had room available for more. After maximizing all the available features, I bet I could have even added a gallon of milk. I didn't leave home that day with this trip planned; the pack just gave me the freedom to do it. I also like that it quickly reduces down to a smaller, more conservative size. It is very well designed and made from good materials. Sure, it does add weight to the bike, but considering the volume it provides, it is relatively light weight. Although it will work with non-Topeak racks, I would be concerned about how stably it would attach and how easily it could be removed. This bag has so much carrying capability, that I would not recommend the weight-limited beam racks. Get the Explorer or similar rack (if you get a Topeak rack with the spring clip, remove the spring clip; otherwise this bag will hang too far off the back and eventually will break down and sag). Highly recommended.

For week ends, January 9, 2008
By Shagui
|
|
With it you can carry all the stuff you need for a short trip, no more than two or three days. Ataches very easily in the Topeak Explorer Bike Rack sliding into it, or you can atach it to diferent racks with the velcro straps.
Taking out the side bags you have more room, also the main compartment expands like 3 o 4 inches
A little heavy but a lof of room also an outside pocket for an extra water bottle.
Reflective stripes and a place to atach a rear red light.
Good construction in general and resistant materials.
Remember, if you have this in your rear rack you don't have room for the sleeping bag or air matress, in order to carry them you need to have a frontal rack.

Great trunk, very flexible, July 8, 2009
By Thomas E. Tweedel (Austin, TX United States)
|
|
I got this bag primarily for bike commuting to work. Previously I had been using a backpack but Texas summers are brutal and I'll take all the ventilation I can. It's hooked up to one of the purpose built MTX compatible racks which I got at the same time.
I was a bit skeptical at first but after a little use I have really come to like it.
Feature wise it's quite nice from top to bottom.
At the top it has a double strap handle with a cushy neoprene grip. It can come undone to give you full access to top. On the top is a mesh pocket and elastic strip. The pocket is good for wallets, keys and such. The strap can be used to sych down jackets or shirts. Though you might have to undo the handle to access it right.
Going down the bag you have double zipper that opens to the main compartment. Not water tight so if your planning on going in the rain consider a cover (Topeak makes custom covers).
Going further down the unit on the outside you run across the expansion zipper. This zipper when unzipped allows the top to expand out like bellows. The front of the top doesn't expand but the back does until the top is a bit like wedge. Turned out to be a pretty useful feature. I was really worried about lack of cargo room inside the main box, but with the expansion it allows me to handle a lot of stuff.
On each side is a padded side pocket. These side pockets are really just containment for the side panniers. If you don't need them you zip them up and it keeps them out of the way and the bag streamlined. If you do need them they are quick to deploy. Topeak recommends using a rack with side supports if you use the side panniers. So far I haven't had much call to use them.
The middle trunk has been big enough to meet my needs. But if I ever need them they are there. Unfortunately they are not quite big enough to hold my medium sized Eagle Creek packing cubes. That would have been a sweet combo. If you don't need the panniers these things are kind of wasted weight and cost. But I did find you could shove thing things like socks, underwear and maybe even an undershirt in them and still get it all zipped up. It's where I keep my dirty laundry after the morning ride.
On the front of the unit is a plastic ring for the strap and the clip to attach to the MTX rack. On the rear is a thoughtfully placed bottle holder which can be used as a small parts bin when your stripping all the accessories off your bike after parking. The holder has two stabilizing straps to get the right fit as well as clamp things on to (like your bike lock). There is a light holder strip on the bottle holder which lets you mount your rear light.
There is also the back ring for mounting the strap.
The bottom is like regular luggage bag bottom with a molded plastic strip along it. The strip has angled groves in it that dovetail with the compatible racks and allows the bag to flawlessly and completely latch onto those racks.
Going inside the bag on the lid is a pocket. This is big enough for wallets, keys, PDA's etc. One nitpick is that this pocket isn't tight enough or unidirectional. One way or another you risk something falling out of it if your not careful. The main trunk comes with foam + Velcro divider which I promptly removed.
The main section is what I use the most. I found you can fit a pair of shoes (up to size 10), pants, undershirt, regular shirt, undies, socks, gloves, small U-Lock and a bit more. A whole change of clothes without having to deploy the panniers.
I also found it's pretty good for shopping. I was skeptical at first but it took a smallish whole seedless watermelon with no problem. You can deploy the panniers for the lighter bulky items like cereal, paper towels, chips etc. It can handle a few days worth of groceries but not weeks. You will need to get the side supports for the rack though.
So features aside how does it work? Great. I load it up with groceries or clothes and head off. I can feel the extra weight on the back of the bike but it's much more comfortable there than on a backpack big though to handle the same load. Once I get to work I can slide it off and to hit the showers, pack the dirty clothes in it and head off up to the office. Works great.
So
Pros -
Very flexible in the amount of stuff it can carry vs bulk.
Great Mounting system
Lots of storage space
Aerodynamic (for a bag)
Adaptable to different uses
Cons-
Requires proprietary rack
Could use a few more/better inside pockets
Not weatherproof
Conclusion
If your looking for a good bike bag that can handle a wide variety of tasks this is a great one. It may not be as design and weight efficient as some dedicated units but the sheer flexibility more than makes up for it. The integration of the mounting system with the dedicated rack is well worth if you are flexible on your rack options. Add a rain cover and your ready for anything.

Biked 4000 miles cross country, no complaints., July 5, 2011
By Mark
|
|
I convinced myself that I would be able to pack everything that I needed for a cross country bike trip into the MTX DXP, attached with the topeak rack onto my Raleigh Grand Sport. This made for an effective light-weight cross country setup. In the trunk bag itself, I carried my sleeping bag and mat. In the one pannier I carried my clothes and in the other I carried my toiletries, cycling mechanic needs and other assorted gear (camp stove, etc.). I velcro'd my around-town sandals to the handle straps. I had a handlebar bag for snacks and other things I wanted at a hand's reach while cycling.
This setup allowed me to carry everything easily. While in the future I would debate bringing a larger sleeping mat, I carried everything I needed. The zippers were durable. The bag itself will handle a decent amount of rain before the items in the interior of the bag become wet; you will need the rain cover for a day-long ride in a downpour. I didn't mind the positioning of my gear and I liked that I kept the side profile of my bike thinner on tight roads.
I liked the idea of having a touring setup that would remain practical for commuting when I returned home. My MTX will now serve as my commuter pack for rides around town. If you want to carry the farm, you'll probably need alot of racks and straps and bags. If you want your bags to double as dry bags, you should probably buy Ortliebs. But, if you want an amazingly simple, rugged and multi-purpose bag setup, I'd highly recommend this.

Lots of Storage Space, June 19, 2009
By M. Ludwig (Pittsburgh, PA)
|
|
This bag can carry it all, lots of different compartments for all your items. I took this during a bike trip and it started to pour - maybe I should have opted to purchase the waterproof bag that goes over it. But I had all my items in plastic bags, so it was ok.
However, this bag seems quite heavy. I wish it was a little lighter so I didn't have to work so hard lugging it around.
All-in-all, I'm totally satisfied with the purchase. It is well built and offers lots of space

Topeak MTX Trunk Bag large and versatile, February 7, 2009
By Daniel Chin (Alameda, CA)
|

I purchased this Topeak Trunk Bag to commute to work. The bag is large and can be expanded and it also has side panniers that fold away. The bag works great with the Topeak rack. The bags slides off and on with ease without any straps. The only complaint is the bag sits high on the rack and makes the bicycle harder to balance. Otherwise, the bag is great for commuting.

Fits everything and fast to load/unload, December 2, 2008
By Harris (Austin,TX)
|
|
This is a great bag that has made my bike commute so much easier. On one side I am able to pack a dress shirt, pants, underwear, socks, and my ThinkPad laptop. On the other side I can fit my belt and size 11 dress shoes. I use the center section for my lunch, cell phone, bike lights, and storage for my windbreaker once I get warmed up. I use the bungee on the top to hold a rolled up towel. It fits everything just right.
The bag is also very fast to put on and take off the rack and is stable while riding over trails. I did find all of the different alphabel soup of Trunk Bag models very confusing, especially since this bag arrived with a tag that said 'DX' rather than 'DXP', but it is indeed the 'DXP' model. I would definitely recommend this bag.

MUCH bigger than the EXP. Looks much better in person., June 30, 2008
By Blade (Northern VA, USA)

I bought the EXP initially and it just wasn't large enough. On paper its only 200 cu inches bigger, but in real life it seems at least 50% bigger. This is probably as big a bag as most bikes can accomodate height wise and the panniers are fairly big. Very nice bag at a great price.

Great Bag But Could Be Larger, April 25, 2008
By Brea Kevin (Brea, CA USA)
|
|
This is a great trunk bag with ingeniously designed side panniers that fold up into the side pouches when not needed. Good for short commuting or day trips. Very roomy trunk -- height can be instantly expanded by simply unzipping a zipper designed for this purpose. This bag clips on instantly to compatible bike racks such as the Topeak Explorer Bike Rack.
My only disappointment is that the side panniers are not bigger. They expand outward OK (I've carried a gallon jug of milk in each side) but I wish they were slightly deeper. To give you an idea of the size and volume of the side panniers, if Topeak had added an extra inch to the height of these, you could fit two gallons of milk in each side pannier, one on top of the other, and still zip them closed.

Gets the job done!, September 12, 2009
By blakeboyt (California)

Its the biggest Topeak bag I could find for my Topeak bike rack.
The side panniers really do come in handy when needed. There not as rough and tough as I thought they would be, when you fold them out, but they work and i haven't seen any damage from me stuffing groceries into them.
I've used this bag constantly for over 2 months now and ive seen no wear and tear on it at all.
The extra extension zipper at the top really helps when your bag is filled to the brim.
To get an idea of what you could fit in the bag. I just bought from costco yesterday, 2 bags of bread, 2 Powerbar boxes 24pack (had to get rid of the box and put them individually in the side pannier) and I had some shirts and stuff like my wallet, keys, ipod, cellphone (which i put in the small compartment at the top.) The bread and shirts took up most the room in the main compartment and i had 1 loaf in the side pannier. The power bars were in the other side pannier. I still had a little room left, but that pretty much made the bag full. So the bag can hold everything I need it to hold, but it would be nicer to have a bit more room to buy a little more grociers if I need too. Seems like I can only get 2 to 3 things depending on the size of groceries. The water bottle holder can hold my Swiss Canteen easily, its the largest one they make, so its big enough to hold big water bottles.
Its a good bag, and doesn't look to bulky on the back of your bike at all.

A sturdy and spacious trunk bag, my favorite trunk bag so far., July 9, 2009
By John (Portland, OR)
|
|
So far, I've been very pleased with this trunk bag. It easily carries what I need for my commute to work in the main compartment, and the panniers are perfect for the once a week supply run (work clothes, towels, etc) as well as any light shopping I may do on the ride home. When the panniers are folded up, there is enough extra space to keep small items (like a paperback book or a wallet) in the side compartment for easy access.
Overall, everything is in the right place with extra pockets on the inside to help keep smaller items from getting too scattered.
This bag is best used with Topeak's rack system that this bag is designed to slide into. But it also has velcro straps and can be used with any rear rack. In addition to the handle on the top, a shoulder strap is included so you can carry this bag with the panniers open. If there is a downside to this bag, its that there are not any small external pockets for items like cellphones.
Overall this bag is made up of:
- a large main compartment with a section than can be unzipped to increase the storage capacity of the compartment. There is a small pouch in the top with a elastic opening. I find the pouch useful for patch kits, CO2 inflator, etc. The walls are firm and I haven't seen any sideway sagging so far.
- a small flat compartment that makes up the lid of the main compartment. This compartment doesn't stretch (much) but easily fits wallets and paperback books. There are two sets of pouches in the top that are good for small notebooks, cellphones and pens.
- A waterbottle holder on the back along with a loop for a taillight. There are adjustable straps to prevent the holder from sagging as well and a cinch string to secure the waterbottle in the pouch.
- Two Panniers that easily fold down with loops on the bottom to hold them to the rack. While the panniers don't have the depth to hold a bag of groceries, I feel they are spacious enough to carry clothes and a small notebook computer. There is room in the side compartments for small items when the panniers are folded up.

Well thought out, and very versatile., May 12, 2009
By J. J. Kane (Champaign, IL United States)

I'm an avid bicycle commuter, and love doing as many things as I can under my own power. I ordered this product after reading the good reviews, and took it on my first shopping trip today.
It works well as an over-the-shoulder bag, casual and decently nice looking. The side-bags open and expand to reveal side panniers, which can hold a decent number of items, and are further stabilized to your rack by bungees. The bag also expands vertically, allowing bulkier delicates (loaves of bread, etc.) to be stored atop the rack, free of crushing forces.
It is NOT waterproof. I got caught in a torrential downpour for about 15 minutes. The topmost pouch was penetrated, and my checkbook soaked. I consider that a good field test, now I know to wrap water sensitive things in plastic bags if I fear rain. But then again, this is so for many panniers.
For those who wish to do bicycle touring, I would look for a roomier pannier with a sturdier rack attachment. There are more appropriate panniers about if you're looking to store sleeping bags, tents, stoves, or etc. If you load this down with 50 lbs of gear, I couldn't say how it would do over time. I wouldn't trust that weight in any case to its velcro straps. But with the 25lbs of groceries I picked up today it did superbly, and had room to spare.
Overall, very pleased. Well constructed, well designed, and versatile. Glad I found it.

The Bag, February 12, 2009
By D. Chau
|
|
It holds my shoes, a change of clothing and my electronics for exercising. I have not used the panniers yet but they would increase my carrying capacity greatly. I do wish the middle section was more expandable so I could put a binder in it and zip it up when I want to carry work/paper items rather than my gym stuff.
The zippers are smooth and fluid. Construction is very durable. I like the shoulder strap but the placement of the carry handles make opening the very top of the bag a bit awkward. Opening the middle main compartment is not a problem since the straps are not connected that far down.
Otherwise, this was a great buy and I am glad I got it.

Be Aware of "Bike Some Where", July 8, 2008
By dwp (APO, AE USA / Stuttgart, Germany)

THIS REVIEW IS NOT OF THE PRODUCT BUT OF THE VENDOR; BIKESOMEWHERE.
The product is great for extended weekend trips.
I have an overseas military APO address and we normally receive stuff from Amazon within 10 days, 7 days on average. We ordered on the 16th of June, with "IN STOCK" and the statement shipment should be delivered by 30 June. On 16 June we ordered a bunch of other things from other shops within Amazon. This in order to plan a 4th of July weekend trip. All other things came in the week of 23 July, in plenty of time for our 3 July departure. Everything except our order from BIKESOMEWHERE. On 30 June I received an email from BIKESOMEWHERE stating one item in our order was shipped on 30 June. I called the shop. I was told our whole order was shipped on 27 June. Needless to say, on 3 July, the order had not been delivered. So instead of two bags priced $65 each, I had to go downtown, on the German economy. There the bags were 80 EURO each, and with the exchange rate as bad as it is, each bag cost me in excess of $120....
Caveat emptor... specifically to this vendor... If you need it in a month, go with the cheap price...

Fantastic Bag, August 25, 2011
By Francis

|
This bag is a must have if you like to carry some cold drinks on your ride. I use mind as a small cooler and the side panniers are great for picking up items from the Grocery store, Hardware store or any stores you might stop at while doing errands. The top compartment is great for carrying tire pump, first aid kit etc.
My bag is attached to a Topeak rack on my full suspension mountain bike. I ride 9-12 miles a day and this has been a GREAT BAG. I also use a front Topeak bag along with a frame mounted bag too. The weight has never been an issue. Get yourself this bag, you will love it. I've owned mine for over 6 years now and still is like new!

It works great with the Topeak bike rack and has enough room for a change of clothes, lunch and more. If I need more room then I can open up the panniers. I use it 16 miles every day to and from work and it was great to finally get that backpack off my back!

All purpose bag, November 29, 2010
By MJA (Beaverton, Oregon)
|
|
I purchased this bag after my size 12 feet kept kicking off some "grocery bag" style panniers. My feet only occasionally brush against the side panniers, and if they do, it won't knock them off. This bag was offered on Amazon.com for the same price as a much smaller model at my local outdoor equipment store.
I was able to fit $70 worth of groceries in the three compartments. I probably won't carry that much regularly since the bike got pretty top-heavy. You can fit milk and canned goods in the main compartment, and boxed goods in the side panniers. It's a little awkward to pack/unpack when not on the bike, but you can rest it on the back of the chair while you take your groceries out.
When I commute to work, it can hold my lock, tool kit, dress shoes, rain pants, pocketbook, homework, and my coffee tumbler! Once I'm at work, I can swap out the shoes and stow my helmet.
I really love the snap on track rack system even though I think the plastic track adds a bit of extra weight. The large bag does obscure my rear reflector, so I bought a Planet Bike Blinky light to mount to the rack. I love all the reflective surfaces on the bag.
I have ridden a few days in pretty heavy rain and have not felt the need for an additional rain cover. The bag and rack functions pretty effectively as a rear fender, but still do get a bit of mud on the cup holder and on my back.

Amazing amount of storage space even if you think you don't need it, October 14, 2010
By Pickydick (West Hartford, CT)

This is an excellent bag. You can buy a rack that is specifically made to carry this bag. It is a very light tubular material and is specifically made for this bag. There are metal railings on the bottom that allow the bag to slide onto the rack and two latches on the back that lock it into place. The rack is very nice and I actually ordered one. I had an earlier model rack which was made from solid aircraft aluminum and after seeing the one made for the bag I decided to stick with the older one. I felt that if by chance I fell over the tubular rack would have crumbled. But the new rack is very nice and I would deffinetly recommend it if you don't already have one. The bag has velcro straps that allow you to fasten it to conventional racks. This bag is great for taking trips and if you decide to pick up some groceries or other things on the way home you have plenty of room when you drop the side bags. The bags and the top containers hold a considerabe amount of groceries or whatever. The top compartment is also a cooler. I also have a set of pantiers for the front of the bike with frames and with the pantiers and the rear bag I can do my grocery shopping for the week. There are also a lot of other features about this bag that you will either read in other reviews or in the manufacturers discription. I just have to say it's a great bag and if I could I would give it 8 stars. Buy one, you'll love it. I've gotten tons of compliments on mine.

This is my second Topeak trunk bag. The first one lasted me thru college and a couple years after. Finally one of the zippers gave out. So I moved up to this larger bag. It's great, room for everything. I commute to work on my bike with this thing most days. I have a rain cover for it, tho if it's just light rain and you're not out that long the nylon is pretty heavy duty and takes a while to soak thru.

Perfect commuter pack, May 8, 2010

I bike to work and pack lunch, extra clothes, netbook, etc. into this bag. It is the perfect bag for my purposes. Great for running those small errands to the grocery store after work and carrying more stuff home from my job as a retail clerk in a bookstore. Eliminates the strain on my back since I no longer need to use a backpack. The track/locking mechanism is a cinch to use and removes quickly and easily. Am using the Topeak Explorer Bike Rack mounted on a Kona hybrid bike.

Pricey but good quality and design, September 25, 2009
By retread biker (DC Metro)

This is well designed trunk bag. I had others from Nashbar and they do not have the expanding panniers like this one but are significantly less expensive. The price value ratio for the MTX is not as good and I would not have purchased if I had not had an Amazon coupon.
I would have preferred the rear pocket to be enclosed, zipper and not mesh. That would make a good place to put spare tube and tools for flats. The sides are stiff so it will look good on the rack. The penalty is a little more weight.

Excellent Travel Bag, August 17, 2009
By Brewt (Northern Illinois)
|
|
I was a little nervous when I bought this bag that it might not be large enough for my recent week long trip through southern Wisconsin, but it was just right. Other reviews suggested that this bag was appropriate for a few days, but if you're not camping and pack appropriately (light) then this bag is an excellent choice. The side panniers themselves aren't huge, but the large trunk helps to compensate for their size. I used it with the Topeak Explorer rack and was totally satisfied. The system to attach the bag to the rack was excellent and obviously appealed to my travelling companions. I highly recommend this bag.

Great trunk bag, that is just the right size...., July 26, 2009
By SkippinZ (Worldwide)

|
This bag might look overly big, but it is sized just right. I am a daily commuter and have it installed on my Specialized Rockhopper comp 29er, and I have no clearance issues whatsoever. I have heard people say it hits there ssddle, but with mine it fits exactly. I am able to put my 6 can cooler lunch box inside of it, and still zip it closed. I found out today on my way to work that the side panniers are the same width as a Taco Bell Grilled Stuffed Burrito, and that they lay down nice and flat and dont get all mashed up.
I was delighted to see when I got the bag, that not only does it have the main compartment, but the lid zips open to reveal another compartment big enough to put a wallet, reflective belt, and a folded micronet towel, or whatever else you might need. I also keep a Nalgene bottle in the back water pocket, and it fits like they designed it for nalgene. I use it in conjumction with the MTX Beam Rack that attaches to the seat post, and I have had no issues at all with it. Goes on easy, comes off when you want it too, nice and easy. The bag also has 6 velcro straps, 2 on each side, and 2 in the front, incase you dont have a quick release mtx rack. Has sturdy zippers, a nice carrying handle, and a matching shoulder strap to help you lug it around when not riding. Props to topeak for making a bag this nice.

50 miles per week commuter, July 10, 2009
By Schwinn Rider (Honolulu, HI)
|
|
I bought this bag about 10 months ago to use commuting to and from graduate school and have put in about 2000 miles with it. It transforms easily from a compact bag suitable for carrying my lunch and a few personal items to full saddle bags able to handle clothes, shoes, notebooks, and even a large textbook (along with my everyday items).
I am very happy with the bag's durability, and its amazing storage expansion. I have ridden in multiple downpours using the optional rain cover (I wasn't willing to risk the bag alone given a few other reviews), and all of my stuff was perfectly dry on the other side. The other bonus with the rain cover is that it's bright yellow, making you even more visible to drivers. I've put large textbooks into this bag, and while it threw my balance a little for the first few blocks, the bag and rack held strong.
I would recommend this bag to anyone who wants to carry items on their bike. It's so much better than hauling a backpack around!!

Fantastic for Commuting to Work, April 1, 2009
By Carl Schmidt (Glenolden, PA United States)
|
|
I bought this for commuting to work and am glad to say it is quite adequate. I like its cavernous side panniers, which happily swallow my old-fashioned 1.1-quart Stanley thermos, a heavy sweater I wear when it's cold in the morning but warm in the afternoon, my frozen lunch that stays frozen with an ice pack inside the center bag, and many smaller items (lock, keys, wallet, etc.)
I have also utilized this rack pack for some small shopping at Staples where I bought two reams of paper (one easily in each side pannier), some pens, file folders, and four cans of compressed air (it gets very dusty here). I was so happy to use my bicycle in this way because I will not have my driver's license for a while, so it was good to get out and use the bicycle for something other than commuting.
The bag is very durable so far. I am using a MTX Tubular Track Rack (I think that's what it's called) and it works perfectly together (you would hope...) The clip system is wonderful because it's quick, though there are two velcro straps at the front of the bag if you are not using the Topeak racks, and there are velcro straps on each side as well. The panniers have flexible loops that wrap around the bottom of the Topeak racks to keep them in place so they're not flopping around.
The trip to staples involved 25 pounds of equipment, and there was ample room for additional items in the main compartment of the bag.
I highly recommend this bag for all but the longest distance tourer because they tend to carry a *lot* of stuff, and the panniers are smaller than a set of independent panniers, but they're great for commuting and light shopping.
Oh I also used the bag to buy some clothes at Sears. I bought two jeans, two polo shirts, and a belt. Obviously that was all no problem. In fact the hardest part about that trip was finding a place to lock up my bike.

Great - it has just about replaced my car for short run errands, December 1, 2008
By T. Boland (Southern California)
|
|
I purchased this bag and the Topeak Explorer Bike Rack from Amazon about a month ago. Since purchasing the combo, I have used my car only three times since to go shopping around town - including groceries. For instance, a carton for a dozen eggs fits perfectly inside the main compartment. Haven't lost one yet!
The fold-up panniers are great and easy to use and put back into their pocket. The slide-mount of the bag is fantastic. I can take the bag off and on in a snap and take it into work or the store.
You will need another rear-facing passive red reflector for your bike - I mounted mine on the Explorer rack mount. The reflector behind your seat will be blocked.
I also took the advice of a previous reviewer who mentioned lubing the mounting bolts when attaching the rack to an aluminum frame. Great tip (not mine) that prevents stripping the bolt holes on the frame. Steel bolt vs Al holes means that the bolts would win in a fight.
The only downside so far is that of the additional weight. I don't notice it while riding; only while picking up and manipulating the bike by hand. I have a very light bike and it throws the balance off to the rear. No big deal while riding at all. Once you remove the bag, the rack does not seem to have as much as an effect.
This combo is WELL worth the extra weight. If you are going to fill this bag with stuff, the weight of the bag is not an issue anyway. If you aren't going to fill it with stuff, what's the point?
The trips I used the car:
One was picking up a big down comforter from the dry cleaners. I actually dropped it off on the bike.
The second was picking up the frozen T'giving turkey and fixings.
The third involved stopping at the LBS (Local Bike Shop) to get a bike rack. Had to make sure it fit correctly. Better to do that with the car.

Trunk Bag, October 4, 2008
By Jeffrey C. Roth

Excellently built and designed. Plenty of compartments and the main compartment is expandable. Will even hold an extra water bottle in vertical position.
Since it's made for its own rack system it was necessary to use a strip of sticky backed, non skid carpet foam between my regular rack and this bag to hold it securely in place. This is an easy fix.

Terrific Bike Bag!, September 13, 2008
By HBB (Salt Lake City, Utah United States)
|
|
My wife and I shared this one bag on a 50-mile ride in threatening weather, so we packed light rain jackets, pile jackets, long sport pants, gloves, our lunch, first aid kit, and a couple extra water bottles in it.
I was surprised that it all easily fit.
The back was stable and tight enough that it was easy to forget it was there.
The main compartment and panniers are very easily accessible. I love the way you can easily slide it on and off (if you have the compatible Topeak rack).
The only thing I can think of that I would change is to add a small outside pocket for cell phone, wallet, sunscreen, etc. I used the thin top compartment for this, and it worked OK, but wasn't as easily accessible as I would have liked.
Great deal at Amazon, and with free shipping it arrived in two days.

Great Bag!!, July 15, 2008
By Katie

|
I have only had this bag for a few weeks but it seems to have everything I need. The shoulder strap works great for taking the bag into the store. Lots of storage room in the main compartment and the way the layers on the top zip open to store things like maps or a wallet works really well for me. It slides on and off the rack really easily and I don't notice the weight of the bag at all (until it's full of groceries of course). I purchased this bag from Modern Bike and had a good experience. Arrived in just a few days and was packaged nicely. I would have given this bag a 5 had the panniers been just a tad bit bigger. I think all of these Topeak bags look a lot larger in the pictures. Something for people who are looking for a really big bag to think about. For a joy rider and grocery getter like me, it's just a really great bag!

Very Practical, May 31, 2008
By Jackson (Idaho)
|
|
I've had this bag for about a month now. I am very impressed! This bag has allowed me to do so much more with my bike. When I don't have a whole lot to carry the main compartment works just fine. Many times I find myself at the store or at work with more items than usual to carry, when this happens, I just unzip the paniers on the side and/or unzip the extender and it gives me plenty of more room.
Another big plus for me was the quick release mechanism. If you buy this bag I highly recommend that you get the Topeak QR Beam Rack MTX with it. No more messing with chords or veclro straps! It is so easy to just "slide, click and be on your way"!
My biggest concern before I bought this was if it could carry a notebook. A 2-inch 3 ring binder can fit very nicely in the paniers but not in the main compartment.
Overall, it is a well thought out design and it is very durable. Since I have had this bag, it has made my bike so much more functional and I find myself riding my bike much more.

Very large storage in a well made bag, May 15, 2008
By CB (Grand Rapids, MI)
|
|
I'm very happy with this trunk bag from Topeak. I've previously owned a trunk which was nice for most things, but I wanted more storage capacity books or groceries or anything else. I'm truly amazed at how much storage space this bag has. I was able to fit a large 3" ring binder which was quite stuffed in one of the panniers without a problem. I can fit kids library books (you know those oversized ones) in the panniers as well. The expansion in the main truck also allowed me to fit a full gallon jug of milk in along with my bike lock, some tools and other junk.
By far the best feature is the ability for this bag to expand to store more stuff, and then compact to a small size when you don't need the extra space.
If you get a Topeak rack with the quick release system that work fantastically, holding it securely but easily allowing you to remove it. However, it also have four long Velcro straps for standard bike racks.
About the only negative I have is that the main trunk does not have any dividers or pockets on the inside to help organize things.
Pros: Well made, solid, very spacious, expands and contracts as needed
Cons: Main truck needs organization spots, no outside mesh pockets

So Far, So Good, October 14, 2008
By One Sweet Shannon (Binghamton, NY)
|
|
I am a newer cyclist, and had been looking for a rack/pannier combination that would allow me to run local errands by bike. My local bike shop suggested that I consider a trunk bag and recommended the Topeak products. I bought the Explorer rack, but they didn't have a roomy enough Topeak bag at the LBS. I found this one on Amazon and I'm glad I did.
It has the best of everything -- the bag itself is very roomy, with room to expand at the top, and has fold down panniers on the sides. I haven't used the panniers yet because the bag is so roomy. It easily holds a jacket, snacks, repair kit, first aid kit, all the things I need when I take my kids on rides. If it slows me down, I'm not aware of it. I don't feel the extra weight at all.
So far I couldn't be happier with my purchases.

Great bag. Very functional and sturdy, February 4, 2012
By J. LaBar (San Diego, CA)

I really like the durable materials this bag is made from, the zippers are heavy duty and the velcro straps do an excellent job of holding the bag to my rack. Easy on/off.
Lots of storage and the panniers come in really handy when I want to go to the store.
The bottle/can pocket is great. I use it for a gatorade bottle and hold it in with the bungee. Works great.
The one thing I would like to see from Topeak is a bolt on Quicktrack for people like me that have a bike rack that we cannot replace with one of theirs.
Great bag though. I highly recommend it.

Great trunk, panniers could use improvement., January 26, 2012
By Diabhal (Southcentral, Alaska)
|
|
The amount of compartmentalized storage this bag offers is great. The only downside I've found, after a month of off road use, is that the panniers need some sort of stiffener to keep them from conforming to the rack struts and getting too close to the tire. I have the bag mounted on a Delta single strut rack, so that could be the issue, and a multi-strut rack could be the solution. They work fine for my application though, as I mount snowshoes in between the strut and the pannier. Removing the quicktrack system was very easy, and requires only a phillips head screwdriver. With it removed, the bag mounts very securely via the velcro straps.

Great All Purpose Bike Bag, December 29, 2011

I have used this bag for years. It can easily hold a weeks worth of groceries, get me to work with enough storage for work shoes/clothes. I have never had any issues with it and is what I would recommend to someone looking for a great way to transport things on their bike.

Well designed, October 24, 2011

I love this bag. Unfortunately I have a full suspension bike rack so I can't use this bag (the rack required for it doesn't work with a full suspension bike). That said, this is a high quality, well designed back. It looks so small and compact yet fits an amazing amount of stuff. It has lots of nice little pockets to keep stuff organized too.
