5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bicycle Security Cable, January 28, 2007
By David E. Kennemore (Knoxville, TN United States)
This is obviously a high quality product. My only probem is that I bought a cable that was about twice as long as I really needed. I'm sure that I will find a use for this cable at some point. Ordering the wrong length was my fault.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Akita 5043 Bicycle Cable, January 18, 2007
By Christine Catrambone (South Jersey USA)
This is a high grade cable with which to lock one's bike. I leave my bike for over 8 hours at the local train station and feel quite secure about the having my very needed ride home each night from work.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  High Security, but thick and heavy, March 27, 2009
By An Engineer and Business Person (San Francisco, CA USA)
The thickness of this cable is about as thick as a woman's pinkie finger. It's pretty thick as cables go. The ends are plenty big enough to slip over a U-lock. This is a good cable for going though a front tire, but it's so thick and heavy that it is be somewhat difficult to slip through anything else, and a bear to carry.

Cables of any kind are really just to keep someone without tools from walking away with a part of a U-lock secured bike. I keep one of my bikes parked at a train station overnight with other bikes: the thieves always take the ones locked only with a cable. You need a U lock to protect a bike parked for more than about 30 minutes or a bike worth more than about $300. I've seen Wal Mart bikes that had been stripped to the frame, worth no more than about $30, stolen when they were locked only with a cable like this one with a padlock.

Cables are only used to lock accessories. I have a bike worth about $150 used I leave overnight at a train station locked with a U lock, and this cable goes through the seat, rear storage rack and front wheel, with the U lock locked using Sheldon Brown's lock technique, and twice, thieves have come through and stolen anything secured only with a cable (the cut cables are strewn all over the lot), but they left my bike alone, because the cable was just protecting the accessories and the U lock was really protecting the bike.

A thinner cable is going to provide just about the same security, but they make the thinner cables just a little too short 6' compared to this cable's 7' length. I have both sizes, but this is the one I use on the bike for which weight is not a great concern. I keep it threaded through the seat and rear cargo rack and when I unlcok it, I leave it threaded through those things and just wrap it a couple of times around the seat post and then I thread one end through the other to keep it in place. Threading a cable of this thickness through the seat and cargo rack takes too long to keep installing and removing it. However, I appreciate the added one foot of length, so it's my cable of choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Security Cable, June 7, 2007
By K. Record (Tucson, AZ USA)
A well made product. Besides bicycles I use them to secure items to my camper or truck such as outdoor furniture, grill etc. to help keep them from "walking away" when we are not around.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  OnGuard 5043 Security Cable, March 18, 2008
By Stewart Wilkins
Good design and well built cable. Ends are large enough to wrap many things through. Perfect length to lock both tires of a bike with (it's a little tight at first, but with practice one can figure out how to make the cable reach a little further). Perfect for bikes with quick release tires. Should be used in conjunction with a fortified O-lock or U-Bolt for best results.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  can't beat the value - good cable, August 20, 2008
By D. Lee
Excellent cable to be used as secondary (you should really never lock your bike with cable only). it's a bit longer than i thought, but that's my fault. Sturdy and well made, if you have this around a tire for a supplemental measure, trust me, no one will bother trying to take your wheels. Good Product!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Much stiffer and heavier than it looks online, December 16, 2008
By N. Schweitzer (Phoenix, AZ United States)
I bought this cable thinking I would use it to thread through my bike seat to keep it from getting stolen (using a separate lock for the bike itself). This cable is actually very sturdy and thick enough to use on an entire low-value bike. The cable is stiff and heavy, and it is too big as a seat-keeper.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Bike Stolen in 3 Seconds. Provides no security. DO NOT BUY!, May 1, 2011
By Raf
My bike was stolen last night. Two clean cuts is all it took. The cops said it probably took about 3 seconds to cut through this cable. "Strongest, most flexible and cut resistant cables in the business", bull! DO NOT BUY! You a better off not securing the bike at all than getting this cable; you will be at less of a total loss if you do (you wont be down the money you spent to buy this crappy "security" cable).

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Only Looks Secure, November 29, 2008
By A. Hatch (Culver City, CA USA)
11/28/08 - Buyer Beware: I had two bicycles stolen (over $1400 value) from my garage when a thief cut through a related product OnGuard Akita 5080 Bicycle Security Cable (Lock Not Included) in one slice. Looks like they used a chain cutter. Unless you're using this as a theft deterrent or for low value items, don't fool yourself that you're buying security.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Hasn't been stolen yet!, May 31, 2010
By D
Unfortunately, I often have to leave my bike locked up in more dangerous parts of Oakland, CA for 4+ hours a day. This cable (to lock the front wheel to the U-lock) used in conjunction with a solid U-lock (to lock rear wheel and frame to the bicycle rack) is usually sufficient to deter thieves.

However, last night I came back from work to find that someone had attempted to cut through the cable to steal my front wheel, successfully sliced through the vinyl cable cover and a few strands of steel, gave up, and contented him/herself to letting the air out of my tires and stealing the bicycle light mounts. Everything else was still there.

The cable did its job, and I will buy another one. (Only negative observed so far: It's about a foot longer than I or most people require.)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Cable, June 22, 2011
By Samuel A. Lappano (Mechanicsburg, PA USA)
Good cable, should be used in conjunction with a good "U" lock. Only negative would be that due to the cable's thickness, it is a bit of a challenge to wrap it in a tight enough circle to put it in my bike bag.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  OnGuard Akita 5043, January 21, 2011
By John McKay (SARASOTA, FL, US)
Does what it supposed to do. Keep my wheels and seat with my bicycle. Use this with a u-lock, not by itself! Will say the yellow ends make it a little tight for running through my seat, fixed that by getting rid of the QR. I think it is the perfect length for looping around front wheel and up through the seat and then down to the u-lock.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for trees!, November 10, 2010
By chronic pain victim (mexico)
This is the correct length to tie your bicycle to a tree or telephone pole. You even have a little extra room in case the tree is fenced off!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Easily cut, May 25, 2012
By Akarp
The U-Lock that OnGuard makes is really good, no question, but this cable doesn't stand up to the same standard. This cable was cut in no time flat and my bike was stolen. Don't risk your bike's safety with this cable, it's not worth the convenience.
