TERRIBLE KEY, July 18, 2008
By DaliDrama (Los Angeles, CA)
|
|
After moving to Los Angeles, I needed to buy a second U-LOCK as bike's are a hot item to be stolen. One u-lock to lock my front wheel to the frame, and the second to lock the frame, back wheel, to a post, etc. I bought this U-LOCK not knowing the company, but it was sturdy and good feel and at a good price.
I had a HORRIBLE experience with this lock. My second time using this, the key broke off like butter while I was opening it. I have owned many U-LOCKS in the past and know how to not force the key, so I wasn't using much force at all. The key broke off inside the lock, leaving me stranded. I'll avoid my heroic details of finding my way home to then return with the 2nd key and plyers to remove the stuck key.
The key (you get two) that is made for this lock is EXTRA thin. All U-LOCK keys are thin and should never be forced, but this is a terrible design and major flaw. It's a good lock, but comes with a terrible key, so I would not suggest buying this.

Beast of a U-Lock, May 25, 2008
By Birddogthecat (The Carolina Beaches)
|
|
This thing is the Kong Kong of U-Locks. The useful cable that comes with this set is excellent. I believe you would need a cutting blow torch to get through this thing (the U-lock not the cable). Thoughtful design with the dust/water protection drum that rotates to protect the entrance to the keyhole.
There is no place to mount this huge and heavy thing on my bike (full size mountain). With a water bottle cage + a small pack that hangs from my horizontal frame bar, I must carry the U-Lock in the Topeak Basket behind me. AND, it is HEAVY!
Be aware, this Theft Protection Program they tout is a bit of a scam. You must pay for this additional service. Also, you cannot register nor sign up for the Theft Protection on line. You must first print out a form(s) and mail it (them) in. The address is not on any of the forms. You must go back into the site to locate the mailing address.
The process of signing up for eventual support and FAQ information is a complicated event that required setting up an account that duplicates many of the registering steps and information you have just completed earlier.
BUT: This thing will definitely deter any thief that I can imagine. Isn't that the primary function anyway?

Right now I am in my room..., January 17, 2007
By Hal Emmer
|
|
and my bike is at class. I spent 10 minutes fiddling with it, and could not get it open. The key turns the lock, but its stuck good. It often didn't open on the first try, but now it's completely stuck. I will try another key, but I'm not happy now, after having to walk back.
edit: I found that knocking on the side of the lock barrel helps the most, as well as rapidly turning the key. Pulling on the U is useless. I added some oil (low temperature engine oil), and it seems to be much better. I think it is worst in below-freezing temperatures. It is better than it was, but DO NOT RECOMMEND. If you haven't bought it yet, buy a different lock.

Strong, Safe and BIG, October 27, 2005
By NewfieTom (Wilmington, DE USA)
|
|
Yup, this is a big one! I can't imagine ANYONE being able to steal a bike (if you attach it like they tell you to with the cable) or your front wheel/tire -- and you don't have to take it off the fork to secure it!!! That's a shortcoming with a lock that DOESN'T include a cable. Even with a quick-release front wheel, it's a pain to take it off and then put it back on (straight) when you return to your bike. But if you don't have a way to carry this thing, you might decide it's too big and bulky. I've decided it's worth the trouble of lugging it around, but then I ride in the city and prefer to have a bike to ride rather than an empty front fork -- or worse -- an empty bike rack.

Happy with security of lock, but not sure of quality of product overall., September 5, 2006
By Michael S. Wolfson (Mile High City)
|
|
Haven't used the lock in a few months, and I can't get it to open (I have the key, and it turns the lock, but can't get the lock to pull apart).
I thought this lock was well made, and secure, but it isn't working now. So, this is a quality issue. I will be able to return it to the store I bought it from, and get a replacement, but it is something to consider.

Strong, but bulky., September 17, 2005
By Tommy (New Orleans, LA)

This is about one of the heaviest locks I have seen on the market, the mounting bracket will not fit my road bike, but it probably will keep my bike safe from someone stealing it. The added cable is a definite extra.

got a lemon, September 7, 2008
By Big D (Louisiana)
|
|
After careful research, I found this lock to be the best value -- strong and well-priced. I sent it to my son at college. After using it for a few days, he was unable to open it for a few days in a row, he said. Then one day he got it to work. He used it for a few days and then he could not open it when he stuck the key in again. It was just jambed shut. After about two weeks of trouble, he bought another lock. I am not sure if he just got a lemon or if there is an inherent problem with this lock.

Weakly constructed key makes this lock a BAD buy!, October 22, 2009
By mashtar (Baton Rouge, LA United States)
|
|
The key on this product has a thin area right above the notches that fit the tumblers. In my case, this caused it to break off in the lock earlier today (I did not apply excessive force, knowing from experience the hassles a broken key can cause ). Now, the only way of getting my bike off that stand is for me to go home, bring back my rotary tool and cutting disc and have at it (if that works, this thing is hardened steel) . The lock itself might be as safe as the Bank of England, but I would advise against buying this product because of the key.
Update: the "13mm hardened steel shackle" on this lock took about five minutes to cut through with my little-bitty cordless Dremel, so I shudder to think how easy a job it would be for any thief with a "professional" tool. In retrospect, I am happy the key broke off and that I had to get rid of this lock.

Unreliable if left for long period of time., April 21, 2007
By Simon B. (Brooklyn NY)
|
|
I had my mongoose bike locked with this U-lock and left it overnight (in Brooklyn projects area) only to find out the next morning that the lock was busted up in pieces and the bike was gone, they probably used a hammer or something. I'm giving this review 2 stars instead of 1 because i don't know exactly how much time it took for them to brake it. One things for sure i wouldn't trust this lock a specially if left on for long period of time. (Note: i used lock alone without the chain).

Cracked Barrel After 6 Months, March 24, 2009
By M. Graybosch (Oakland, CA)

I bought this lock because it was a bit less expensive than other locks. But after only 6 months the barrel is cracked and seperates when unlocked. I do not want to chance that the lock will not hold up to theft so I am going to replace it.

Not just bad, dangerous!, July 20, 2009
By drcraw
|
|
The frame mount for this product is just plain dangerous. It does not hold the lock securely in place and the lock will work free while cycling. This very thing happened to me. Fortunately, the lock only bounced off of my shin, causing pain but not a crash. It seems that retailers (and presumably BullDOg) are aware of this and yet let this inherently dangerous condition continue. I do not even bother using the mount any more.
As for the lock itself, after 3 months, the locking mechanism is jammed. The key often does not work. I think the tumblers become misaligned. I have tried wiggling it, shaking it, finessing it, striking it, etc. nothing works. Then, a day or so later, it works again. Again, having read reviews (unfortunately AFTER purchase) it appears that the company is aware of this defect. BullDog is BullCr@p!

Great U-Lock that will secure your bike!, July 7, 2008
By BAH (Long Island, NY USA)
|
|
I shopped around for a good u-lock and finally decided on the OnGuard Bulldog DT 5012. I was originally going to go for the Onguard Brute but as soon as I picked it up, I knew right a way that this lock wasn't right for me. I can't take a lock that weighs way more than my bike. It was very heavy at over 4 lbs but I am sure that is why it is so strong. The OnGuard Bulldog is a nice size where it isn't too big or too small. I can't go for the Bulldog mini because the mini won't fit many posts that I use. This Bulldog is just the right size.... One poster said that he left his bike overnight in the Brooklyn projects. This is a heavy crime area and especially leaving overnight is a recipe for disaster that I think the more expensive and better secure lock would have to do. If someone is in a heavy crime area, SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY FOR THE KRYPTONITE FAHGETTABOUT U-Lock or the On-Guard Brute U-Lock.
Pros:
1. 13 mm hardened steel
2. It's not too big or too small. Its a tad bit large but it fits nicely on my Gary Fisher Marlin. Large U-Lock but that is what is needed for the posts that I attach it to. The mini bulldog would never work for me.
3. Reasonable price! Gives solid protection for the price. If you are in the heavy crime areas, you should lug around a gigantic and heavy lock like krytonite 8 lb lock, krytonite u-lock or the onguard brute.
4. I think the Onguard Bulldog looks great. Best looking lock around!
5. The cable is nice to have to protect BOTH your tires. Yes, I am able to put the u-lock on my front tire, frame and post. Then I slip on the cable through the back tire to the U-lock.
Cons:
1. The cable is nice but it is still a little bit short when you have a larger bulkier post. When you have that kind of large post, I don't see the cable being long enough. Luckily, I have a longer Krytonite Cable Combination Lock that coils nicely around this U-Lock. I would definitely invest in a little bit longer cable just to be safe if you don't always use a regular bike post. For example, there were no bike posts around so I had to use a concrete pillar as a post. I wasn't able to protect both my tires and bike with the regular 4 foot cable but I was able to protect everything with the longer 6 foot Kryptonite cable that I had.

great lock for a great price!, April 10, 2007

i live in brooklyn and after doing our research my boyfriend and i decided to get this lock set- we weren't disappointed. solid quality lock that is still light and easy to bring around with you (unlike those kryptonite chains you see people riding around with wearing them like midevil torture belts) we've never had a problem- the only thing i would want to upgrade is that the cord is a bit short for my bike, though my boyfriend ha had not problem- i just got an additional cord- no problem...

Lock - OK. Lock bracket - JUNK!, May 18, 2009
By m2thesea (Chicago)
|
|
During the first ride I had with this new lock attached, it flew off after I hit a bump. I had it mounted horizontally on my top bar. It was dragging underneath my bike, and thankfully there were no cars coming. Most of the rubber got scraped off a section the u-bar and sections of the cable, and the lock rattles now. I have since moved it to my seat post, which allows it to be mounted vertically. In other words, the bracket is total junk. As far as the lock goes ...we'll see. I still have my bike, so far.

good lock bad mount, May 21, 2008
By John C. Meister (A-Town, PA)
|
|
It won't fit on a MTB frame and even if it would when the spline-lock bracket sustains any vibration the heavy lock ultimately falls off and knocks your frame or bruises your leg or causes an accident; it's unsafe. It's heavy-duty yes, but only transport it in a backpack otherwise you'll be very sorry.

Lock might be strong, but everything else is cheaply made, May 15, 2009
By D. Solberg (Minneapolis, MN USA)
|
|
This lock is being returned to Amazon. I'm surprised by the cheap quality of the accessories that go with this lock.
Problem 1: The keys are made of plastic and painted silver to look like metal. Plastic breaks, which is why some people are having problems with the keys breaking off in the locks.
Problem 2: The key light lit for 3 seconds then went off permanently.
Problem 3: The attachment to hold the lock to the bike is large, ugly, and poorly made. There is no ring of metal or plastic with a rubber inside that is used to attach most accessories. Instead, this is a large piece of plastic and a thin nylon strap that you tighten to the bike. Unfortunately, it flops around while riding. Also the attachment to the lock itself is cheap plastic that can easily come undone going over bumps.
Overall, I'm taken back by the cheap, inferior quality of the keys and bike attachment. The lock would definitely need to be carried inside a bike bag, and a person would need to be careful not to break the keys, especially as the plastic stresses over time. The lock itself might be secure, but the overall quality of the package I received was surprisingly bad.
Edit: After looking at other inexpensive locks from companies such as Kryptonite, I've noticed that these sorts of problems are actually pretty common. The solution I used was to get a much more expensive Kryptonite lock.

Great Product, Without Any Flaws, October 18, 2008
By pda&gps user (Palo Alto, CA USA)
|
|
First of all, I don't agree with the ones telling that the keys are inappropriate. I have no problem with the keys. You should try some 'special' tricks for breaking the key!
Everything is perfect with this u-lock. It's long enough to provide you enough space for locking your bike's frame and tire to a bike rack at the same time. This provides much more security.
It's short enough to prevent thiefs to comfortably work on.
It's thick enough to prevent thiefs to break or cut.
The locking system is reliable and durable enough to use for many years.
It also has a protection coverage to prevent dust, humid and stain inside the locking system.
Last but not the least: This product offers you an extra security cable with an incredible price of $30!!!
Do not hesitate buying this great u-lock. You will never regret.

lasted 31 days, a factor of being beachside?, June 22, 2011
By rpl
|
|
I read the reviews, saw that some keys break, get stuck or stop functioning soon after purchase. I figured there were just a few bad apples out there. After 2 weeks I noticed some difficulty unlocking/locking with the weakly built keys (they give you 5, but it isn't like it helps!). Just after the return period, and after using it only about 12 times, the lock won't lock, the key just stops mid turn and any more force will snap the key.
On their website they say "We have found that despite our efforts to make the best locks in the industry, a small number of lock owners, particularly in beachside areas and areas where salt is used to condition icy roads, encounter trouble with our lock mechanism. Corrosion and dryness of the lock cylinder sometimes cause the locking mechanim to bind 90-degrees into the rotation of the key."
I live in So. Cal 2 miles from the beach and wished I would have seen this tidbit earlier, but I keep my bike indoors at night and kept the lock cover closed. I don't dare use it again. It is so heavy that it hurt$ to have to return it. I'll be forking out the money for the kryptonite lock.

seems OK so far, May 17, 2010
By dana
|
|
It's hard to really judge a lock without intentionally trying to break it, but from what i can tell this one seems alright -- not great, not bad, but alright. The picture didn't really do it justice for me -- the cable especially is much thicker than it seemed in the photo. I've only a couple of complaints:
1. The silver-y part in the middle of the lock wobbles around and seems kind of flimsy. I'm not sure why that it is, and i don't know if it affects the security of the lock over-all, but it kind of bothers me. Generally i expect a U-lock to feel pretty solid.
2. The keys could, as other reviews mentioned, be a little better. They seem about as flimsy as the silver thing. I haven't had a chance to really use it a lot, though, so i'm not sure if that's just perception or what.
3. The lock does have rubber padding on it to prevent scratches to the bike frame, but i feel it could be 'softer'. The lock can still easily damage the paint given a little bumping around.
4. The process for registering the lock and signing up for anti-theft protection could be made a lot more convenient (both for customers and for the company) if OnGuard really wanted it that way. My guess is that they intentionally make it inconvenient in order to deter people from actually signing up for it. For example, you MUST send the registration form in by mail within 15 days of PURCHASE (not receipt) of the lock, and you MUST include a receipt for or appraisal of the bicycle. Make sure you've got all your papers in order before you buy it!
edit: One more thing: The included accessory for keeping the lock attached to your bike when you're riding is not very good. Most of them aren't, but just so you know....

Strong - maybe too strong!, July 11, 2009
By Jeremiah

I was impressed when I first used the U lock on my new bike. Four days later, the lock jammed. Fortunately, I had not yet locked my bike. I made use of the cable lock and a hastily bought padlock until I could find a replacement. I worked on and off for two days to try to open the lock, following the advice of the manufacturer, but have returned it. I'm glad my bike isn't still locked up somewhere. I won't take that chance with an Onguard product again.

Nice lock, with a good price, tumblers needed graphite...., September 4, 2008
By Raz (Newport News, Va)
|
|
Nice cheap U bolt lock and short cable for the money.
Added lock graphite powder to the lock because the pin tumblers seemed dry.
You need to do this once a year as maintenance on any lock. You can buy it at Lowe's.
I have used ground up pencil lead as a substitute for the real stuff.
The key is keyed so it will only slide in one way, i.e it is not symmetrical. Used
fingernail polish to mark one side of the key and marked the side of the
lock near keyhole so I could tell how to insert it.
This review was based on correcting what other buyers complained about. This was basically the key was too thin, it broke, the key was hard to turn. Yes the key is thin, this is to stop picking, it is not a design flaw. You need to slide it in correctly, read the short review, it goes in one way, color code the thing, or you will twist it too hard trying to make it work, and break the key off. Yes, the lock was dry. Read where people put oil in it, bad idea, worst in freezing weather. Oil in a lock will ruin it, as you ride dirt will get in it, you will grind the cylinder and tumblers up. Put oil on you finger, stick it in the dirt, see the problem? Freezing weather will turn the oil into a hard like glue, will break the key, or just not open.

Worked well in the get go. Then dissapointed greatly., July 22, 2011
By Tony C. Huang (Elk Groce, CA)

|
Trying to purchase a lock for a decent price in this economy and having adequate protection for my road bike, I decided to purchase the Onguard U lock. Shipped quickly and looked well. I even WD-40'd it to make sure all the mechanisms were working to its full potential. After locking it outside Subway to a street post one day, I go and eat and come back and unlock it. After I unlock it, the key has broken a small piece off inside of the lock. I was more than lucky to have it not break when I was locking it down as my bike would have been there to be stripped down. The keys are cheaper than ever and I would never buy from Onguard's U locks again. Overall, it has been used less than 20 times before rupture.

I have purchased two of these OnGuard Bulldog locks, the big one, and then a smaller one. The big one key stopped working about a month ago, and then the smaller one that I just bought now doesn't work. I think the product is defective. Excellent Lock, November 2, 2006

Does the job and does it well!! It is a lock where it comes down to if they get through it they can keep the bike. But it would take a tank to get this lock undone. I recommend this to anyone and everyone needing a lock. The great thing about it is that it's cheap and really effective.

11/28/08 - Buyer Beware: I had two bicycles stolen (over $1400 value) from my garage when a thief cut through a related product OnGuard Akita 5080 Bicycle Security Cable (Lock Not Included) in one slice. Looks like they used a chain cutter. Unless you're using this as a theft deterrent or for low value items, don't fool yourself that you're buying security.

Good for security not in bad weather., April 21, 2011
By baileyindc (baileyindc)
|
|
This is a good sturdy bike lock and I got several years of good use out of it. I lived in downtown DC for most of those years, which is very high in bike thefts and never had any issues. The real issues started when I moved to Madison, WI. It turns out that this lock's biggest weakness is bad weather. I kept the bike locked up in a shed at night so it was protected from snow and rain, however not from the freezing temperatures. Throughout the winter I would have to leave the bike locked up because the lock would freeze and refuse to unlock. When spring set in I figured my problems would be over, however the lock now sticks for some reason and I've bent three of the 5 keys that come with it trying to get it undone. So if you live in a city with high crime this lock is a good value and keeps your bike pretty safe from thieves (if they really want your bike they'll get it no matter what you lock it up with.) However, if you live in a city that has a rough winter, I'd try something else....

The keys break easily, and the lock seized up after about a year of use, but it took me an hour and a half to saw through the lock with a hacksaw when I needed to get it off. I guess that means it's good?

Lock it, March 18, 2011
By Randy

|
I've read many reviews. Can't say anything about others I haven't used to compare but I love this. If you're not in a rush in setting up and using there shouldn't be any problems. Yes you could break a key if you force it or don't push it in all the way. It may be weak and could be improved but so simple when used right - and there are extra keys. Try it first and you see how solid it is. I had the hardest frame to set this on, a mountain bike frame but it can be done. I always wonder if it's the competition complaining when I read a bad review or someone that got in a hurry etc. and blames the lock. The cable is perfect, I attach to my removable seat thru removable front wheel and to the U lock and not sure what kind of cutter would get thru the cable so you decide. I don't plan to leave it overnite in a theft area. Love it.

Safe and Effective Lock, February 6, 2011
By VibramRunner
|

This lock is very dependable. It works well, but beware, it is a tad heavy. I would reccomend carrying it in a bag. I did not use the attachment for the bike, as I can see this lock is too heavy and would break it. I rarely use both pieces together except high bike theft areas. All in all, this is a good deal on a good lock.

AVOID. mechanism seizes in rain., October 9, 2010

i have the pitbull and used it for about a year and it had a couple of drops but after a few rain showers over a couple of days the locking got more and more stiffer and now the key wont turn at all. terrible.
this is a common problem it seems with this lock and im glad it didnt happen when the bike was locked up.
also the lock rattled alot when riding as it has no rattle bumpers which was annoying.
theres no point buying this when for a bit more u can get a kryptonite which has a much better build quality.

What a Lock!, September 30, 2010

This lock is heavy, that's the only thing wrong with it. It comes with 5 sets of keys that look like car keys, and there's a cover that slides over the key hole. I like the mounting system... Well worth $25

Solid lock. Very reasonable quality for this price point. Weird mount., September 30, 2010
By Biker
|
|
I will give my initial impression of this lock after purchasing it about a week ago on Amazon for twenty six dollrs. I may update this in a year or so for a long term review, which I think is more important to a prospective buyer than an initial review.
The lock quality feels quite good. The fit and finish of the included 4-foot cable and the U-lock are high quality and tight upon inspection. The locking mechanism feels very secure with tight tolerances.
It feels like Onguard has been responding to customer complaints regarding sticky lock mechanisms by introducing a soft click feel when the key is fully inserted. This reduces user abuse where the user twists the key before it is fully inserted, damaging the lock and key.
When opening the lock, I accidentally dropped both the U and the lock bar onto concrete from about 3 feet. Everything seemed to work fine when I picked it up. I had a fifteen dollr Master U-lock seize on me when it fell off of my rear bike rack, so I was pleased with the Onguard's durability.
The included 4 foot cable lock was just long enough to secure my quick-release rear rack and my front wheel while the U-lock locks my rear wheel and frame.
Overall, I am very satisfied with the quality of the lock, considering the price point. I cannot compare it to more expensive locks, but I can say that the fit and finish of this lock is much better than the Master U-lock I had.
In terms of security, my opinion is that the conditions surrounding the bike and lock are more important than any attribute of the lock itself (the quality of the locking mechanism or the thickness of the steel for instance). A determined bike thief with a battery operated Dremel can open any U-lock on the market within minutes. A properly dressed bike thief with a cover story can spend hours with a hand tool in a public area, and no one would care (bit[dot]ly/bIz8HM). The conditions under which a bike is locked: the lock only secures a wheel, the area is dark, deserted, or in a high-crime neighborhood for example, would all increase the chances of theft more than a "low-security" lock would.
Finally, the mount is not good. I cannot compare it with any other brand's mount, so maybe the problems I had with it are inherent to all mounts. But the thing does not secure tightly. After riding for a few minutes, if any part of your body comes in contact with the lock -- thigh or foot during pedal stroke for example -- the lock will shift position. My rear wheel wore down some of the rubber protective coating of the cable because the lock had shifted position and was contacting the rear wheel while I was riding. I rarely use the mount, placing the lock and cable on my rear rack instead.

Good lock, September 27, 2010
By i heart amazon

The lock is easy to use, and the cable that comes with it is very convenient. However, the piece on the U lock that is meant to attach the U-lock to the bike frame (while riding) is loose, and occasionally slides down. This prevents the U-lock from locking.

Onguard u lock review, September 25, 2010
By Amcbng

Great lock. Good size lock fitting the frame and rear wheel - no forcing it to fit or worrying aboutscratching the frame.
Very sturdy lock - with the cable to tie the front wheel provides piece of mind especially since the front
wheel has quick release locks. I would recommend this lock.

Good Lock. A bit heavy but manageable., September 22, 2010
By Luis (CA)
|
|
The U-lock is big. For me this is an upside as I can really lock the back wheel + the frame to pretty much anything.
It's a bit on the heavy side but so far I have managed to carry it in my backpack when I commute.
I tried to using the quick release bracket, but I have a water bottle holder and it barely fits.
Overall, it is a good lock. I live in a safe city and there's no way my bike gets stolen with this one.
This lock gave me peace of mind.

Solid so far..., September 6, 2010
By wings

This lock has kept my mountain bike safe around the Berkeley area for the past month. Usually I lock the back wheel and its brakes, then loop the cable through the front wheel and "2nd frame". My bike has a frame similar to [...] - so it is difficult to lock with the traditional locking techniques.
Other reviewers mentioned problems with the keys. I haven't had these issues yet, but I never force the key. There have been a couple of instances where the keys would not turn - usually the problem is from trying to lock the bike around something too large (slightly stretching the lock) or not having completely fitting the lock into the "U" part. Once I fix the problem the key turns easily.
You get five keys - one of them has a built in flashlight. You also get a code card. This lets you register your keys, then they can send you replacements if you ever need one. There is also an anti-theft offer, BUT you must register within 15 days by sending them your receipt for the lock and a receipt or appraisal of your bike value. There are a bunch of rules that also negate the anti-theft offer (must report theft to police in 72 hrs, lock must not have been broken by power tools), you can find the whole contract on the OnGuard Website.

Great U-Lock and Cable Combo!, September 5, 2010
By Confucious (Michigan)
|
|
This u-lock and cable combination fit the bill perfect. It was only about $25 which I thought was a great price for a u-lock, cable, mount kit and 5 keys. I love everything about this except the fact that I wasn't able to fit it inside my frame to mount it. I would have to remove my water cage but I wasn't gonna do that either. So, I just toss this in my backpack along with the cable. There are other options to mount the u-lock but didn't like those options. The cable is pretty thick and just the perfect length to be able to loop my front wheel and through the seat and to the u-lock. At first it wasn't long enough but I ended up lowering my seat and that seemed to help. The keys they give you are pretty thick and are almost like a car key. They don't seem fragile but with force might bend when trying to open or close the u-lock. At first I was having problems with u-lock and keys. I noticed that if the U shaped part of the lock is not pushed all the way to the locking mechanism it will not lock. You might break your key if you force it. So after trail and error if you push it in all the way then you will not having any problems locking or unlocking. I lock my bike at the bus station and works well for my needs. I have seen some bikes with missing seats or missing front wheels. Before I would take my seat with me on my backpack and I would take my front wheel off and lock it with the back part. Overall I like the u-lock and cable and would recommend to anyone.

Decent Lock, August 23, 2010
By AliB
|

This lock is pretty good. It's a little too short in length to fit both the rear wheel and frame around the bike post outside my local library, but it does fit with the frame. Also, the cable is just long enough to fit my 700c front tire. It came with a lot of keys, but the light up key doesn't work.

Good enough., August 20, 2010
By JFG
|
|
I don't use the cable; the lock is heavy enough on its own. The mounting mechanism is truly awful, I had it mounted vertically and the plastic broke on it after maybe a month of using it. While it worked it worked just okay. I have a friend who mounted it horizontally though, and hers has held up. I've had it for almost a year now and I like the lock itself, I just wish I didn't have to lock it around my neck (handy that it's big enough to do this and I can lock up two bikes with it) put it in my bag or carry it in one hand. The tiny flashlight has actually come in super handy more than once and for more than just unlocking/locking my bike. The keys seem delicate, so I am cautious with them, but I haven't had one break on me. This one gets a 4, but if I could find a 5, I'd go with that next time.

Don't buy, better options, July 26, 2010
By Adam
|
|
In case you have not picked this up already from the numerous reviews: DON'T BUY THIS LOCK ... I can think of few instances where using all caps is appropriate, but this is one. As others have noted already: The lock itself is solid enough, but the base of the lock cracked apart after a few months, and the whole thing rusts quickly, even if your bike is only very occasionally caught in passing rain (I store my bike inside my house). The key can sometimes get stuck, and it sounds like it gets permanently stuck for some. And the notches on the lock are not beveled at the corners so its very easy to ding your frame and chip the paint. The mount for the frame is cheap and locks onto your frame permanently with a ratcheting mechanism, and is a pain to take the lock on and off of.
In short, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE learn from others mistakes, and spend the few extra dollars to buy a product from another manufacturer. You really will be happier with a different lock

Solid thick U-Lock, July 22, 2010
By x69cancer (Alabama)
|
|
This lock is a beast. It feels sturdy and secure and has kept my bike safe. I have had no problem at all with the keys being sharp - some of the teeth are, however they are recessed into the key and have presented no problems after two weeks of use and a spot on my keychain that goes in my pocket. The lock also works perfectly and smoothly. And you get five keys, one with an LED light. Bonus. Now the cons.
1. Huge, the mounting bracket is flimsy and I have a water bottle cage - it will not mount on my 56 cm top tube specialized sirrus (road bike with commuter handle bars.) anywhere that will not interfere with my pedaling motion. Forget about the bracket if you have a waterbottle cage.
-However, I use a trunk bag/panniers so this is not a problem for me and I was aware of this going in.
2. The warranty (bike replacement) is crap. You must send them the broken lock for them to honor the warranty... Gee if someone ever steals my bike I hope the thief is nice enough to leave my lock lying around. The warranty also states the lock must be broken into and is voided if power tools such as an angle grinder, dremel, or blowtorch is used. Industry standard but still crap.

The lock haven't seized on me like it has for other owners. I keep the lock cylinder lubed with wd-40 in hopes of it giving me years of trouble free security. one thing that sucks is that i cannot find a good mounting spot for this lock. Its long, heavy and bulky so i have to carry it in my backpack but that's a given, i can't expect something small and light to secure my bike in the city.

Good lock, bad bracket, May 22, 2010
By Daniel Leary (Iowa City, IA, United States)
|
|
Saw good on-line reviews of the security of the lock and realized in advance it would be heavy (which it is). Lock feels very sturdy, gets 4 stars (maybe 4.5 given reasonable price and included cable). However, the engineers at On-guard either built the bracket for another lock or have never ridden a bike. The bracket-lock interface is too small and too loose...about once a week the lock fell out of the bracket and clattered in the street then I had to stop my ride and hope nobody ran over it before I could pick it up. It got to the point where everytime I hit a bump, I'd look and make sure the lock was still there. Now carrying it in my bag which adds a lot of unnecessary heft. It's a shame the cheapest piece of this package makes it a pain to use.

Couple of thumbs up, May 16, 2010

The quality of material and the smooth key operation are some of the best features of the Bulldog DT. I have been renting scooters and bikes for years, that require this type of lock, so I know what to look for when it comes to quality and durabilty. For the price that I paid, and considering the free cable included, there wasn't a better deal online.

Good Value, March 22, 2010
By Unknown Vincent (USA)
|
|
I have an original Krytonite-4 U-lock with the ACE II cylindrical lock that could be opened with a simple ballpoint pen tube - although the lock is strong it was too easily compromised for any real usage.
In mitigation Krytonite reacted laudably back in 2004 when the vulnerability was discovered and replaced those locks, that ended Sept/2007. Unfortunately I was not aware of the replacement program, so missed out on it.
However when I contacted Kryptonite about my lock they said they would still replace it with an equivalent lock at the same charge as their regular key replacement program at $20 if I ship the lock back to them. This again deserves merit/recognition.
But the total cost for return shipping and the $20 meant I really could buy a new lock for that price.
Although I would buy Kryptonite again for their good reputation and policies - my research led me to OnGuard U-locks - ConsumerSearch seem to rate both Kryptonite and OnGuard well - they picked the OnGuard Bulldog DT 5012 as one of the better selections and the price at Amazon at just over $25 so qualified for Free shipping - was very good value.
Having the cable means I can secure my front wheel to the U-lock, in turn locked onto a something immovable, rather than having to remove my front wheel to lock with the U-lock.
I was obviously concerned by the negative reviews about the key/lock binding - but my key/lock seems pretty positive and easy to use - so hopefully with good lube maintenance the lock will not give me problems.
My only complaint was that the lighted key came with a battery that was totally flat - but following Amazon's instructions about defective parts I phoned OnGuard - who said they would send me a new battery.
So far, the initial impressions are good - the U-lock seems sturdy and strong - certainly as good, if not better than, my original Krytonite-4 U-lock - and at a price that would have cost me to replace the Krytonite-4, I gain the 4ft cable to help secure my front wheel more conveniently than removal and locking with the U-lock.
Unfortunately it is hard to judge the strength and security of any bicycle U-lock with personal experience - unless one had a bike stolen while the lock was in use. Even that is a difficult call if the thieves used power-tools which probably can overcome most locks fairly quickly other then perhaps the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit (expensive and heavy).
From reading reviews - I regard this OnGuard Bulldog DT 5012 - as better than average security, perhaps more difficult to overcome than most regular chains and definitely cable locks - but it is not invulnerable - so care in where to leave a bike is as important, if not more so, as the lock used.

It works..., February 8, 2010

I got this thing at a walmart and it actually worked pretty good. I just got a very expensive bicycle and so I went on Amazon to find a longer/tougher lock. and so I looked up the one I have (this one) and I see that it got some mixed reviews. I will give it 4 starts because it works great and it is secure, price is good, BUT I wish it was a bit longer. I have to lockup sometimes my 2 bikes toguether and this is not long enough to lock them to secure pole. Still a great product if you only want to lock up one bike.

Solid secure bike lock, January 29, 2010
By S. Beal (Winter Park, FL USA)
|
|
This is the best bike lock you can use to secure your bike. The additional cable allows you to secure both your wheels as well. Its heavy to haul around on your bike, so if you plan carry it a lot, you may want to find a lighter bike lock. But if security is your primary objective, it's hard to find a better lock on the market.
I use mine to secure my bike at work during the day. I leave my lock attached to the bike rack when I leave at night, so I don't have to transport it back and forth every day.
I have another lighter lock that I carry in my bike bag that I use for quick stops at the grocery store on the way home. The lighter lock is enough to defer an opportunistic thief, but I feel better using this stonger lock to protect my bike when I need to secure it for a longer period of time.

Great lock for the price. Does everything it says it does. The little mounting piece shifted, but I just popped it back into place without a problem.

Great, compact, and durable!, November 4, 2009
By Courtney Drake

It's a fantastic small U Lock. It always stays attached to my bike when I'm riding and apparently has a lock system which is very hard to pick. The only reason I gave it a 4 is because of it's length it doesn't lock to as much as a larger U lock would. I wish it was a tid-bit larger. (Note: I ordered the regular Bull Dog U lock and it was way too big and heavy for my bike. I wish there was an in between but the small lock does the job)

This is a fantastic lock, and has come in handy for me! I mounted it right onto my bicycle and could not be easier. I never have to worry about anything when I have my bike locked up with this. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because of the magnitude of keys on the keychain for the lock. What are all of these even for?! Only one works in the lock anyway!

Bulldog DT Lock, October 9, 2009
By lineread
|
|
So I thought I was buying the Pitbull DT and was a little unhappy when this arrived. In any case, I didn't want to hastle with returning it and I've been using it for the last few weeks. My reaction is that it is a more than effective lock for low crime areas. I live on a college campus and I actually have had a bike stolen. That was my fault though, as I left it unlocked while I visited a friends house. People here lock their bikes up with cheap cable locks and U-locks from Walmart all the time. I get the sense that as long as it's locked up with something, it's pretty safe. I know that's not true for all areas, but the Bulldog DT has been extremely effective for me.

Great lock, safe and secure, August 27, 2009
By science buff (Philadelphia, PA, USA)
|
|
I have owned the lock for about 18 months now, and so far its kept my bike safe. I live and work in high-risk-of-bike-theft parts of the city and I am very impressed with the lock. I know the lock has been attacked at least twice - the first time, it was the mark of a drill-bit on the barrel of the lock and the second - the U-part of the lock has abrasions/shearing from what I guess was a pick/lever. As you can tell from my happy review, neither worked.
The mount onto the bike frame is not great, I have attached it to the seat post and that seems to work fine.
The only big problem/flaw I have faced with the lock is jamming. Before you dismiss the lock altogether, read on.. the U-part of the lock has attached to it a ribbed piece that fits into a groove on the frame-mount. When this ribbed piece pushes up against the barrel of the lock, it jams the key-turning mechanism. The only way to get it loose is to push the ribbed part back towards the bottom of the U, it takes all of 2 secs to do. Its a pain sometimes but I don't think its a big deal.
I would buy the lock again, not just because its saved me a couple of times, but also because the lock is a good fit for my mountain bike.

The Lock is VERY sturdy both in design and material.
The thick cable gives extra-assurance your bike is safe.
Of the 6 keys provided, one has an LED light attached.
The attaching bracket is functional but could be better in both instruction and design.
Overall: The Lock is excellent for any medium to low scale bikes. For better protection I would recommend Kryptonite New York Fagettaboutit U lock. A definite must buy for the price.

1st Bike Lock, May 29, 2009
By C. J. Maldonado (Burke,VA)
|
|
This is my first bike lock for my Diamond Back Response Sport 08. The reason I got it is because I usually ride my bike to the lake and like to jog also so I have to leave it locked some how. So I saw the nice price and got it. The U lock is heavy, the piece you attach to the hold the lock to your bike in place is really poor its basically a strap that you tighten to your frame and and a clip that holds the u lock in place while riding. The strap/clip item failed. It doesnt lock in place and the u lock falls out BUT thankfully I found a better way to attach it to the bike just by locking it to the frame and using the cable from one end of the bike to the other. This is my first lock, so as far as the holder it all really depends on your frame of bike so larger the frame the easier it is to fit/attach the strap to it, but the clip part is weak is made out of plastic.

Great heavy duty, all purpose lock, January 9, 2009
By Matt Floch
|
|
This lock is a great all purpose lock. If I'm going to be away from my bike for a while (live in Los Angeles) I bring the heavy Ulock and connect with the cable. The Ulock, cable combo is less appealing to thiefs when my bike is sitting next to other bikes with less durable locks. For "ins and outs", i only bring the cable and use a small lock (not included) to connect the cable with an object.

good at locking bad at mounting, December 8, 2008
By S. Hong

This lock has worked very well so far with no issues jamming or theft. However, the mounting bracket is getting more and more annoying. When the lock is mounted on the frame, it is basically free to rotate. I tried to wedge the lock up against my bike frame, but during a long ride, it eventually rotates and gets in the way. It is otherwise a good lock to have especially if you carry it in a bag.

No problems so far!, November 10, 2008
By Andrea Thompson
|
|
I've had this lock for over a month now and overall, it's been a good experience. I haven't had any of the key problems mentioned by some other reviewers (I did notice that the key will not turn smoothly if the lock is loose - so, if you want your key to turn well, make sure that the bar and the U are flush and fully engaged.) The lock is definitely pretty heavy-duty, and excellent for that old trick of "park next to a nicer bike with a cable lock." So far I've not had any problems leaving my bike downtown in a fairly thief-heavy town (Santa Cruz, CA).
The reason I gave four stars, not five, is that the thing is damn heavy. And, if you're like me and your bike is teeny because you're teeny - well, there's nowhere to mount the holder on your bike, because it WILL interfere with your movement. I can't even fit in on the seatpost! So, to other small bicyclists, be warned: This thing is not so comfy to carry in a backpack.

OnGuard Bulldog DT 5012 Bicycle U-Lock and Extra Security Cable, August 9, 2008

One couldn't ask for a more versetile bike lock. The extra security cable makes all of the difference in the world. When locking one's bike to something other than a standard bike rack; the extra security cable is most convenient.

I thought the cable would be longer., June 18, 2008
By Julie Sendrowski (Vail, CO United States)

I'm sure this lock works wonderfully, but as it turns out, I haven't used it yet. I didn't pay close enough attention to the length specifications, and I envisioned being able to loop it through both tires and possibly the seat, while having the ULock to lock the bike itself securely to something else. SO bottom line is that I don't feel comfortable leaving my very expensive bike just locked up somewhere, but I suppose I'll use the lock at some point and stop being so paranoid! :)

KEY BECAME PERMANETLY STUCK, July 8, 2009
By E. Gonzalez (San Francisco)
|
|
So i rarely use this lock maybe 5 times. well on the 6th time i used it the key became stuck i could engage and disengage the U component but the key was stuck. I was pissed, i had bike 5 miles to a store only to find myself not being able to go into the store because the stupid lock stopped working. And another thing, this lock is HEAVY, i would recommend getting another kind just for the weight issue alone. So yes first it was the weight but add to that the key getting stuck on the 6th use this product gets a fail.

The Cable only Looks Secure, November 29, 2008
By A. Hatch (Culver City, CA USA)

11/28/08 - Buyer Beware: I had two bicycles stolen (over $1400 value) from my garage when a thief cut through a related product of same design OnGuard Akita 5080 Bicycle Security Cable (Lock Not Included) in one slice. Looks like they used a chain cutter. Unless you're using this as a theft deterrent or for low value items, don't fool yourself that you're buying security.

came apart when dropped, November 18, 2011
By trembowla

|
I had this lock for about two years. Then one morning I dropped it. It came apart exposing the interior cylinder made of plastic. The plastic was cracked in half. Although I was able to reassemble it, I have no faith in it's security value and will not use it again. I am replacing it with a Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit and hopefully I will be able to forget about it.

Lock Corrodes Easily. Poor Customer Service., October 11, 2011
By Berk Ustun
|
|
I had this U-Lock for about 3 months before the rain and snow in my area corroded the locking mechanism and effectively prevented me from opening or closing the U-Lock. I was lucky since I was able to open the U-Lock on last time before it did not work any longer, but had I not been able to do this then I probably would have had to find someone to break the U-Lock for me.
3 months seems like an awfully short time to a lock to corrode, and after searching on the online forums and the FAQ, this appears to be a systematic issue with the locks. The forums suggest maintaining the lock by regularly lubricating it. Unfortunately, I was not expecting to maintain the lock more often than I would maintain my bike. After all, when was the last time anyone actually wanted to lubricate a lock.
I tried to call and e-mail OnGuard customer service to ask for a replacement or a fix, but never got a reply on either of my attempts. The phone service is actually outsourced to another company and does not have an option for call waiting. When all the lines are busy, you are supposed to leave a message on their voice mailbox and expect them to return your call.
My advice: if you live in an area with regular precipitation or leave your bike outdoors, buy another lock from another company. It might be more expensive, but you won't find yourself with a U-Lock that does not work in 3 months, or worse, a bike that's permanently locked to the last place you left it.

Nice lock, September 13, 2011
By michael luostari

|
I bought this over a year ago and it's worked perfectly. The lock is quite large and easy to fit around a post, through the rear wheel and around the frame and the cable is almost the perfect length to secure my front wheel and frame and around a post. I don't live in the most theft prone area and it may be a bit of overkill, but it's my bike and I want to keep it that way. I didn't bother putting the mounting bracket on, its a heavy large lock and I think it would be pretty difficult to build any kind of mounting system that would work, I would rather have the extra weight in my backpack than on my bike. If the size and weight are an issue, check out the bulldog mini. I own one for times when I don't have a bag with me and it fits perfectly in my back pocket or my fabric horse lock holster and I don't even notice it being there.

Ok, so the bike it guards is almost 15 years old, and this is a bit of overkill, but it's my bike!!! This is about as much protection as you could possibly need unless you live in downtown DC or the Bronx.

Poor quality, ZERO customer service. Lock mechanism freezes up and could leave you stranded if your bike is locked when , February 7, 2012
By Bakefeets
|
|
This lock froze up on me about 8 months after I bought it. Fortunately my bike was not locked with it at the time. I lubed it every 2 months or so with a graphite lube as recommended, and it gave no warning before freezing up.
I tried to contact OnGuard about their product. Despite 3 support tickets, multiple emails, and several phone calls over the course of weeks, they never got back to me. Their phone system asks you to leave a message and they will call you back, right. Thats right, it is impossible to get in contact with this company.
This lock did get wet occasionally as I bike to work rain or shine. However, I park in a garage at work, and I don't believe this lock was ever left outdoors uncovered in the rain. So the lock only lasted 8 months with occasional exposure to water while en-route to work. Unless you live in a desert and don't care about the lack of customer support, I would recommend you avoid On Guard products.
I just wish Amazon would allow a rating of 0 stars.

Mechanism seems to be made of cheap, easily corroded metal, January 24, 2012
By Gristleberry
|
|
I purchased one of these locks in November. Within a month I needed to lubricate it, as the mechanism was getting so difficult to work. By mid-January, the lock was sticking so much that I *broke* the key in the lock while trying to open it. I literally drenched it in lubrication and it now barely opens, with much fiddling and pressure. If you live somewhere that experiences inclement weather, and where corrosion is an issue, this is not a good choice. I had an ABUS lock previously and its mechanism was so much smoother and trouble free- though it is more expensive.

Great U-Lock, December 18, 2011
By Kevin
|
|
I bought this lock to secure my bike in a college town. It came with 5 keys, and one of them had a led light on it. This lock is a bit heavier than my friend's kryponite lock that is the same size. I have never had a problem unlocking this lock, the key always turns super easy. I use the cable to secure my wheels to my frame, and in my opinion its a strong thick cable. Overall I have never had any problems with this lock I would recommend this product to people locking for a good lock that don't want to spend a ton of money.

Crumbled in hand, November 30, 2011
By Joelle B. Malott (New Orleans, LA United States)
|
|
I've had this lock for about 4 years. At first, I did have problems with locking and unlocking the lock and it eventually "worked out". This lock was kept on the book rack of my bike indoors most of the time, except on days that I rode my bike to work or to go shopping, nothing out of the ordinary. This lock literally fell apart in my hands when I unlocked it yesterday!!! For the price that I paid and the little time it was exposed to the elements, THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. I have a Schwinn U-lock that has been locked outside to a fence for years that is rusty, BUT it still unlocks and unlocks and hasn't fallen apart!!!
