1.0 out of 5 stars.  Heart Sensor Doesn't Get Picked Up, January 11, 2008
By Stop dwelling on it (CA USA)
What a disappointment. I had the previous model of this Timex and it worked great, until I broke it on accident. I thought this would be better because it's a newer model. I disregarded the previous reviews and thought they must have gotten the bad batches. I tried it once I got it, and I couldn't get a heart beat for the whole entire time I worked out. 45-minutes of cardio is long enough to get some kind of reading. I lost my trust on Timex that day. Good thing I tested it right away, I was able to return it to Amazon, with no problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent watch!, February 6, 2008
By J. Mijares (San Francisco, CA)
Having used numerous HRM watches in the past, this is the best I've used thus far. It has everything you need, from automatic zone calculation to custom zones, to intervals, to lap timers, and it's GPS 3D compatible and shows your speed, distance, altitude, and even predicts your finish time.

I've had no problems with it at all. The signal is clear. As long as you keep the watch within 3 feet of the chest monitor, you won't have any problems.

I think the best feature of the Timex HRM watches though is that both the watch and chest monitor batteries are user-replaceable. It doesn't get any better than that.

If you're serious about getting into shape and like to track your progress over many activities in the day, I'd also recommend getting the Timex Bodylink Data Recorder II. Once you activate the watch and the chest monitor, the Recorder will also start recording signals from the chest monitor (and GPS too if you have). For martial arts practice, I'll activate the chest monitor via my watch, then take my watch off (can't use it during practice) and then activate the Recorder so that I can get accurate readings after my training.

Perhaps the only thing lacking might be a calorie counter, but I've found most calorie counters on HRM watches to be inaccurate.

Highly recommended watch!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Watch, Good Price, January 1, 2009
By Nikolaos Foukas (Pennsylvania)
Ok, I have been looking at these for a while and I have to say for the money this thing is probably one of the best options.

In terms of functionality you'll get more bells & whistles then you will probably need. Most important to me is the Chronograph and it's lap fucntions & the different zone settings you can create in HRM mode.

I'm sure that other watches allow you to download your data, but I like to use a simple excel program & create my own runner's log so I didn't need the download option.

Pros: Easy to use, good functions, chest monitor is comfortable.

Cons: The only thing I can think of is that the start/stop button on timer is located at bottom right & sometimes I hit it by accident & it scews up my times.

Also, I can't say about the battery life yet, but I know that you can get replacements easy as they are typical 3V Lithium at least for the monitor.

I've owned this watch for a couple months now & I would recommend it to anyone, not just runners.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A good reliable watch with all the functions you need, January 9, 2007
By Gaijin (Japan)
I would have prefered a Polar HRM monitor watch with a more simple storage, access and download of recorded data, but as price was an issue I went for the Timex. It works well and appears to have a good and reliable connection between the watch and the other components. I mostly only use the HR sensor strap which also is comfortable to wear both when jogging and when playing soccer. The GPS and data recorder widgets are fun but all I really need is the HRM function.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Flawless design.... but flawed HR monitor, June 25, 2007
By MythBuster (Charlotte)
I tried this product after having great success with Timex products in the past. After getting the watch and quickly learning the functions I was very excited. The HR monitor function worked great for a couple of weeks, however, after a short time it took the watch increasing amounts of time to find and display my Heart rate. After one recent work out, the watch did not find the signal from the monitor until my work out was over - it beeped to tell me I was below my target heart rate. I mean at least that function worked...right? OK, long story short - I had to replace the batteries in the monitor itself twice within a period of 2 weeks. I think I might have just gotten a dud, but I am not willing to try the product again. In my frustration I returned the item. Not recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Purchase!!!, November 2, 2009
By G. Aguayo
I bought this watch two months ago, and have been training with it since then. I have to tell you that at the price advertised, this watch is a real bargain.

I had doubts when deciding my purchase due to a couple of negative reviews, but after using the watch I am really happy with my purchase.
The watch looks nice, so you won't have any problem wearing it all day and if this is your first HRM, it will change your training forever.

I have to tell you that the watch is a very sophisticated training tool, so I urge to read the manual. This is important even for small details, for example, at the beginning I was worried because the watch was not reading my heart rate instantly, after reading the manual I became aware that you need to moisten the sensor before using it, and problem solved. The watch has been working perfectly.

This watch offers a lot of very useful functions that other more expensive watches do not. It is an excellent sports watch and an excellent heart rate monitor as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A Satisfied Owner of Timex Ironman T5F001, October 12, 2009
By A. Ghazi
Did lot of research before buying this watch. I had options of other Timex HRM with better views but I went for this one with only 12 views and overall 3 star rating. Why? Because I had a feeling that this item was under rated and yes, I was right! I have been using this HRM for about 5 days now. No issue at all. Picks up signal in an instant with stock batteries. However I do apply water on back of sensor before using it. I checked the reading against my treadmill sensor and it was exactly the same. It has all the functions and feature that one need in HRM. My intent was to burn some fats and this HRM told me that I jog most of the time in Zone 1 instead of Zone 3 (fat burning zone). I have been jogging for about 8 months now and this watch instantly told me that I am not doing it right! Now I am changing my workout plan accordingly. For those who do workout, I highly recommend a HRM and if you are out for one, get this Timex Ironman T5F001 Unisex 100-Lap Target Trainer Heart Rate Monitor Watch. You won't regret. AG

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Do not buy if you are an avid cyclist, April 12, 2009
By Brendan Krasinski (Atlanta, Georgia)
I have been using this watch for about a year, and am about to buy a new watch even though this one still works. It has been very frustrating for me as a triathlete. In terms of functionality, the heart rate monitor works fine, although I have gotten EXTREMELY discrepant readings from time to time. Sometimes well below my actual HR, other times well above my MAX heart rate. But those issues have been fairly limited. What really makes this watch almost useless to me is that I use it for triathlon training, and the stop button constantly gets pushed as I'm shifting my grip on my bike. All of the sudden, I will look down at my watch only to realize it has not been on for 5-10 minutes. I suppose I could switch wrists, but still, I find that the buttons (even during everyday use) get pushed much too often. My guess is the buttons are big and easy to push as an intended benefit to the user, but to me, they are TOO big. If it weren't for this flaw (or if I didn't cycle so much), this would not be an issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great tool for Cardio workouts, October 18, 2008
By renman01 (San Antonio, Tx United States)
Great tool to monitor your heart rate for effective cardiovascular work. Fairly user friendly set-up and instruction. I recommend it for anyone who walks, or does other cardio to keep themselves 'honest' in their workouts.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Another Timex Dud, November 22, 2009
By Running enthusiast (Boston)
This is my third Timex Ironman HRM and the last one I'll ever buy. I've previously bought the less expensive Timex HRM and found out they're not waterproof. Why should I expect water-resistant to 50m and being called a TRIATHLON watch (swim is part of triathlon I think) indicate I could rely on it to withstand a few swims and some sweating? Wrong! Both of my first two watches went down in a heap of water bubbles under the crystal after a few swims in the lake. Timex sent me replacements (for a 6$ surcharge): the first replacement worked for about 2wks then read my heart rate consistently at 249bpm; the second watch developed water droplets under the crystal after a few sweaty runs in the heat of summer.
But I like the look of the watch so I went for the upgrade - the T5F001. It is a fairly good watch and does essentially the bare basics of a running watch that I need EXCEPT when I run in the winter and require more than 2 layers on top. For some reason, the monitor is unable to pick up a signal through a few extra shirts. Once again, I'm left with a suboptimal HRM from Timex. My recommendation - go for the Suunto.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Everything I needed and more, March 20, 2009
By W. Wood
Excellent product. My first HRM and I am more than satisfied. It has really helped my training as I was kind of a naysayer to these before I got one. Between checking my pulse manually and when on cardio equipment, I have found it to be spot on 90% of the time with a variance of +/- 1-3 BPM the rest of the time. Highly recommended especially for fist time users. Can also be used with GPS, purchased separately, if desired.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Watch, October 19, 2008
By Lou Evans
Great Watch. I use it every day. Nice enough to wear every day to work and great for the gym. Chest strap is comfortable and I have had no problems with it. Watch is easy to use, and easy to view. Monitor seems accurate when compared to HRM's on equipment at the gym they show the same rate.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Dissappointing, December 1, 2008
By Serious runner (south florida)
This was a very disappointing purchase. First one I received read way too high on my first run (30-40 bpm above normal). I called Timex and they sent out a replacement chest strap which they said they would test before sending. This read way too low. I sent both back to Amazon and received a replacement the next day. It also read way too low. Gave up and sent it back for a refund. I've had Timexes before and they worked well. This model just doesn't seem to have the same reliability.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Timex Ironman T5F001 Unisex 100-Lap Target Trainer Heart Rate Monitor Watch, July 7, 2008
By Ted Miyazawa (Detroit, MI USA)
This watch is useful and convenient in most functions.
However, it does not calculate calorie!!!
Half of the people who buy this type of watch are for diet purpose which requires calorie calculation by training.
And I thought it is standard function for these watches, or I just do not know how to check it?
Anyway, if it is only training purpose, this is very inexpensive, good watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great HRT, November 3, 2010

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Heart Rate Watch, February 14, 2010
By KJ (Australia)
I purchased a Heart Rate Watch & Chest Strap for my husband for xmas 09. I ordered the watch approx 8-10 day before and it arrived within 4 days.
My husband loves the watch and it looks and works perfectly. The watch is used for intensive training and it seems to handle it well.
I would recommend this to anyone.
Amazon have been very quick with posting the item out. I searched for some time trying to find the cheapest and amazon couldn't be beaten on price.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  great functions, low quality, December 30, 2009
By Sandro Fabres Viana (Rio Grande, RS Brazil)
The funtionality is really great. It is very easy to use and the sensor is quick reading; However, the batery last ony 20 hours, not the 800 like informed in the manual. I sent to the timex in my country, tehy tested and did't find any problem, but even so sent me another. What ahppened? 20 hours after the batery was dead. So, obviously it was built wiht low quality standards, because excessive energy consume is the mark of of low quality eletronics. Try another. I live in Brazil, so I need pay US300 for this trash! Yes, US300!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Heart Rate Readings all over the map..., June 17, 2009
By Zixxer2Go (La Vergne, TN USA)
I had pretty high expectations for the Timex to replace my existing HRM since I'd had one of the first Timex HRM's a while ago and was very pleased with it. However, after reading up in the training manual and strapping it on for my first workout, I noticed strange behavior; it read my resting heart rate spot on, but after starting my workout, it kept reading significantly low rates for the first half hour of the workout. It was like it kept "creeping up" on my heart rate. 15 minutes into the exercise, I should have been low 120's and it was still in the 80's and climbing. Towards the end of the workout it finally peaked over 160, and stayed there, when it should have been 130's to 140's. Strange! I thought maybe it was calibrating itself, but it did the same thing the next time out. Definitely a problem with it. I turned it back in, and decided to get a Suunto T4C HRM...much nicer IMHO.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Questionable Durability of the Resin Band, July 9, 2011
By D. Buzzell (USA)
Purchased in April 2008. Just the other day, the wrist band broke. As far as I can tell, that ends the life of this product, as I can't locate a replacement. This damage came from only wearing the watch for workouts, not for daily use, and I've been babying it for the past 6 months since the tear first started. For the short useful life, I give it the two stars. Apart from that, the watch functioned well for me. Never experienced problems with the HRM. Too few interval settings for my use. The backlight is weak and next to impossible to use when active. The alarm is plenty loud to hear. The display is easy to see (except in darkness). And the instructions and functions of the watch are simple and straightforward. I've been happy with it the past three years, and I'd continue being happy with it if I could replace the band, but for now, I'm disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Crummy band makes it almost worthless, December 13, 2011
By Thadeus Smellenbottom
I love the watch, but the band is terrible - I've had this watch for 2 1/2 years and I must have gone through four bands in that time. Maybe that's not so bad if it was just a $5 replacement band and a few minutes each time, but it's compounded by the fact that the replacement band is VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE to install - I took mine to three watch shops and each of them gave up on it. Finally I had to have my friend take it to an Official Timex Repair Faciltiy, and they were able to do it (forget about trying to install the replacement band on your own.)

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good HRM; lousy wristband, December 8, 2011
By Sports Stats Fan
I've owned two of this model, wearing them almost daily for work and to train for marathons and shorter races. Each time, I've been very happy with the accuracy of the HRM and ease-of-use of the watch. My only complaint is that in both instances the plastic wristband has broken in 18 months or less. Unlike other Timexes I've owned, it's evidently not possible to replace the band without buying a whole new watch. If you're comfortable with a "leased" or "rental" watch that you'll be able to use for just about 1-1/2 years, this is a good choice. If having to replace the watch frequently would frustrate you, look elsewhere. For me, these have been five star watches on one star wristbands.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Durability of the Resin Band - resolved, July 9, 2011

Update: got through to Timex customer service, who directed me to a third party who provided the wrist band for a reasonable price. Took it to the mall to install and feel like I have a new watch. Back to 4 stars, downgrade for poor backlight and lack of intervals.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Satisfied Customer, April 30, 2012
By Doug
The watch is easy to use and navigate. I use all settings except the programmable workout, I prefer to use the review function and look at the heart rate for each segment for which I hit the split/lap button which is a fantastic feature. The only difficulty I ran into was using the heart rate monitor in the cold. Without a good sweat and contact between your chest and the monitor, such as can happen when running in the cold (below 20*F in my experience) the monitor is unable to pick up heart rate accurately. However, I would fully expect this same thing to occur with any monitor. I would highly recommend this for anybody looking for a reliable, easy to use, heart rate monitor with a few extra features on top of a basic monitor.
