Lock Size4" x 9"
Bracket Incudedyes
Big city cyclists need big city protection, as would-be thieves aren't intimidated by flimsy cables or weak U-locks. That's why serious cyclists turn to Kryptonite for their security needs. The Evolution Series 4 U-lock is a cut above other bike locks, with a 14mm hardened Max-Performance steel shackle designed to resist both cutters and leverage attacks. Ideal for anyone who lives in moderate to high crime areas, the Series 4 received a 9 on the Kryptonite 1-12 lock comparison system, which ranks the varying levels of security offered by the company's product range. A lock that ranks 1 on the Kryptonite scale might work if you live in the burbs and have a Rottweiler parked next to your bike or motorcycle. A lock that ranks 12, however, is built for maximum deterrence. The Series 4 also offers such security-enhancing features as a double deadbolt locking mechanism for extensive holding power; a disc-style cylinder with more than one million key variations; a reinforced anti-drill/pull cylinder protection system; and a center key location with a dual overhead cam locking mechanism that defends against leverage attacks. The Series 4 is about more than just security, however, with a sliding dustcover that protects and extends cylinder life, anti-rattle bumpers that reduce noise during transport, and versatile EZ mount transportation bracket. And as a bonus, the lock comes with three keys, one of which is lighted with a high-intensity bulb that makes it easy to unlock the Series 4 after dark. The lock measures 4 by 9 inches.

The Legendary Durability of Kryptonite Locks
The first big test for Kryptonite locks came in 1972, when Kryptonite founder Michael Zane directed the Second Avenue Bicycle Shop in New York City to lock a three-speed bicycle to a signpost in Greenwich Village. Although thieves immediately stripped all of the bicycle's removable parts, the bicycle itself remained for 30 days and 30 nights. The publicity gave Kryptonite the boost it needed and forever changed the face of bicycle security. Twenty-two years later, Kryptonite returned to the streets of the Big Apple to test its latest innovation, the New York lock. In April 1994, the New York Post laid down the ultimate challenge: Could Kryptonite's New York lock last 48 hours on the toughest streets of New York? In a city where more than 100,000 bikes are stolen each year, Kryptonite and the Post locked a brand new, bright green Univega road bike worth $600 to a parking meter in the East Village--the Bermuda Triangle of New York bicycle thievery. For a full 48 hours, the bike remained locked on the corner of Avenue A and 11th Street. Zane and Neil McDaid, director of product development and design for Kryptonite, watched from around the corner as the bike came under every possible means of assault, stumping thieves at every turn. After 48 hours the bike remained intact except for the gear derailleur, which had been stripped off. The lock showed definite signs of abuse, but it had not failed. The New York lock had met the Post's challenge.

Not satisfied with the length of the test, Zane moved the bike to SoHo for another six days and, finally, uptown near the Lincoln Center. Even in these high-theft areas the properly locked bike lasted another three weeks before being pulled off the streets by Zane and McDaid. The Post also ran the New York lock through a battery of street tests using common bike theft tools: a 4-foot bolt cutter, a crowbar, and a hammer. The non-Kryptonite locks cracked in seconds, but all methods failed on the New York lock, even the monstrous bolt cutter, which was rendered useless with large dents in its jaws.

About Kryptonite
In the early 1970s, Michael Zane was a free-spirited, bearded kid with a VW van and a big idea for a new kind of lock. He traveled thousands of miles showing the unique U-shaped locking device and spreading his passion for bicycle security to bike dealers all around the country and forged lifetime relationships. The company soon expanded its product line to include power sports, hardware, and snow sports security. Through innovative product designs, cutting-edge marketing savvy, legendary customer service, and pure fanaticism for security, Kryptonite grew with a cult-like following.

In 2001, the company that was started in a VW van was purchased by industry giant Ingersoll Rand and became a flagship brand in the company's Security Technologies sector. Publications such as Bicycling, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, US News & World Report, and a host of others continued to tout Kryptonite products as the best on the market. The company's dedication to its customers is best represented by its actions during the fall of 2004, when it was discovered that the industry-standard tubular cylinder could be compromised, at times, with a household item. Kryptonite flew into action, created a voluntary lock exchange program, and replaced more than 400,000 locks in 21 countries for free. In essence, the company redesigned the equivalent of nine years worth of new products in just 10 short months. Kryptonite is the only company in the world that offered such a comprehensive plan to customers, taking its "legendary customer service" pledge to new heights.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock, but Heavy, February 21, 2009
By An Engineer and Business Person (San Francisco, CA USA)
I purchased both this lock, and the OnGuard Bulldog MINI TC 5013TC Bicycle U-Lock. These are the two locks that are considered to be near the top of the list for U-Lock security.

The very top is the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit Mini Bicycle U-Lock (3.25 x 6-Inch), but I decided against that one due to weight and cost issues. My bike is old and new was only about $1000 when new, and so it isn't going to be the target that a more expensive bike would be.

Between this lock and the Bulldog Mini, both are high security. The reason I was in the market for a lock was that I had a cheap U lock cut with a pair of bolt cutters by an apartment manager unhappy that I had locked a bike to a railing. He sliced through that cheap U-lock silently, like butter, and both of these locks have been tested against that and neither lock was cuttable by bolt cutters. However, both can be defeated by a determined thief with power tools and a couple of minutes.

Both locks give you several sets of keys (at least 4) and let you either write down a code or register the code and they'll send free keys if you ask. Both locks include one lighted key, but the thing is huge and takes up so much room on my key chain that I took it off because I've really never needed the dim light it provides. Nice concept, but worthless - you can feel the key hole if it's pitch black.

Neither lock has a decent mounting system. They both come included with one that really only works on a 21" frame, the biggest bike for the tallest riders, because it needs too much space to pull out to mount it on the seat tube. Me and everyone else I've seen just ends up hanging the lock over their handlebars. The lock is rubber coated so it won't scratch your handlebars. If you do that, and you will, be sure to remove the mounting piece on the U lock that clicks into the mounting bracket. Click the bracket onto it and twist the mounting piece off. The mounting piece can be seen as the thick collar over the left post of the U lock where it meets the cross piece. Neither lock is impervious to the elements: you'll need to do a once per year spray inside with either WD-40 or, with graphite powder you can get at the lock section of any hardware store. Either one will keep it operating like new.

There are three basic differences between this lock and the Bulldog Mini. First is the size. The Bulldog barely fits over my mountain bike tire and the smallest pole, like those used for no parking signs. It DOES fit over a parking meter, but many parking meters have had a pipe slipped over the pole that holds them to prevent people from hacksawing the meter off and this lock will not fit over that outer pipe. The series 4 is big enough to fit everything. UPDATE, the Bulldog Mini has been increased in size and so it now will fit over larger poles of parking meters.

Note that it isn't necessary to lock both your tire and the bike frame unless your frame is really expensive. Just lock the part of the tire that is inside the frame triangle underneath and behind the seat. The bulldog can't fit over both the tire and the seat tube, while the kryptonite can, but it isn't necessary. A thief would never take the time and effort to try to cut all the spokes, and bend the rim to force it through the frame triangle, and if he did he'd wreck half the cost of the bike.

Second is the key and locking mechanism. The Bulldog has a key that breaks off easily and the lock has to be fully seated to work. That means you have to shove the crosspiece in as hard as you can and shove the key in as hard as you can to turn the key without breaking it. Because of the small size, it's not always possible, and you find yourself looking for another pole about 10% of the time. The series 4 has a much stronger key and the mechanism is more forgiving - it doesn't need to be shoved in and is therefore easier to use. Because it fits around everything, that makes it really easy to use.

The last issue is weight. Here is where the Bulldog has the Series 4 beat. The Series 4 weighs about 3.5 lbs and the Bulldog weighs about 1.75 lbs. It makes enough of a difference that I find that the Bulldog mini, with all of its faults, gets the nod and that's the one I tend to use for my cheaper bike, a Trek 7000. I also have a much more expensive looking bike (Trek 8000 - $1800 new), and I use the series 4 for that one because a cable is not going to keep someone from stealing the tire.

You might also consider the Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 U-Lock 3 x 5.5" as a compromise, but the heavier cross piece of the smaller series 4 is still going to make it weigh more than the Bulldog Mini, and probably not that much less than the regular size series 4, so you'd probably be happier with either of those.

I also have a thin (3/8") 6' cable, much thinner than the 7' OnGuard Akita 5043 Bicycle Security Cable (Lock Not Included) that I place over the ends of the U lock before I lock it that fits through the front tire, and the seat and the mountain bike rack on the back of my bike to keep them from walking away. 6' is the minimum size you need to go through everything. The 7' cable linked above is very thick and very heavy, though it provides slightly better security. You'll want to decide whether you want better security or much greater convenience, and then buy the cable to match. My thought is that it is just about as easy to cut a thin cable as it is a thick one. I haven't seen the thin 6' cables at Amazon, though they are in many bike stores.

I've used the thin cable and the Bulldog Mini locking only the rear wheel through the frame triangle on my Trek 7000 in some of the worst neighborhoods in San Francisco, and no one has ever touched it. But note: if you leave your bike outside overnight, and it's worth more than about $300 used, you can pretty much kiss it goodbye in San Francisco, particularly if it is left in the same place several nights in a row. And don't even think about a cable as your primary lock. I've seen $50 bikes stolen with thick cable locks - they are just too easy to cut. The cable lock is only for accessories used in conjunction with a solid u-lock, never as a primary lock.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Ironic Semi-endorsement, August 23, 2008
By SWG (Lebanon, OH)
For such a sturdy, heavy-duty, ridiculously strong u-lock, the key used to operate this thing is ridiculously flimsy.

The key snapped off IN THE LOCK the first time I tried to unlock my bike from a rack. >=(

Five minutes with a hacksaw only managed to scratch the steel. Seeing that I had to call in the heavy artillery, I got an angle grinder with a diamond blade. After about 20 minutes of 120 dBA flying sparks, I successfully extricated the bike.

I give the lock 5 stars, but the key rates a big, fat 0.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock, Best for the Price., September 21, 2007
By Black Suit Jaik (Chicago)
I just moved to Chicago and needed a new lock. I had a flex lock, and my bike was stolen within the first month I moved here. I have bought a new bike, and Two locks. I'm now using this lock, in combination with the Bell MaxGuard Heavy-Duty Cable(12mm). I carry all this extra weight, because Chicago is 2nd in the nation(next to New York) for bike thefts. It works great alone, but I feel safe with the flex cable combined. There was another Kryptonite Evolution with a flex cable, but the cable was only 10mm.

If you are buying this for the insurance purposes, then I'd suggest looking at the fine print before hand.

The only other Kryptonite lock that is supposed to be tougher than this, would be the Kryptonite NY Fahgettaboudit U-Lock. It was $75 though, and this one was only $42. People wrote that they have problems trying to fit everything with the Fahagettaboudit lock. This one fits both heavy tread tires, my frame, and almost every post/bike stand that I've attempted.

9/17/11
Still using the same lock, but now have a commercial grade Master Lock and cable to pair with the Kryptonite. I've had a bike stolen since the review was first published, but that was because someone broke in and the bike wasn't locked while it was inside.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock, Best for the Price., September 21, 2007
By Black Suit Jaik (Chicago)
When I purchased this lock, I actually bought two. I just moved to Chicago, with my girlfriend, and she needed a new lock. She had the older/cylinder(barrel) key kryptonite that you can open with a Bic Pen. I only had a flex lock, and my bike was stolen within the first month we moved here. I have bought a new bike, and Two locks. I'm now using this lock, in combination with the Bell MaxGuard Heavy-Duty Cable(12mm). 4.0 out of 5 stars.  This is an very well made Bicycle Lock, May 10, 2007
By David J. Nairne
Gladly, I have no evidence that the Kryptonite Evolution STD Bike Lock has actually thwarted any potential thieves. However, it certainly looks as if it would make a thief choose a different target. Holding the unit in the locked position, one cannot feel any play, or hear rattling from the joints. The key and lock mechanism have worked smoothly every time. The key only releases when in the locked position. Because it always turns smoothly when locking I feel the chance of bending or breaking the key is effectively eliminated. By the way the key come with a small flash light built in to it. I have been grateful for the key's light on several occasions. The STD sized Evolution lock has allowed proper locking in situations where a smaller lock might not have worked. The mounting bracket connects easily to your bike either inside the frame or on your seat post. I like that you can feel and hear your lock "click" into the mounting bracket. However, even when securely mounted the bracket allows the lock to sway side to side when riding which constitutes a minor annoyance. My experience with this lock would warrant a rating of 4.75 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid Lock, December 27, 2007
By Chris Wellington (United States)
This is a solid lock that doesn't add so much weight and inconvenience that you will begrudge the security it provides. As other reviewers have said, it fits well around all sorts of bike stands but still fits reasonably well on a bike or backpack. Though they do emphasize the ease of mounting these locks on your bike, remember that you will sacrifice the water bottle holders if you do that (most likely). Also, the insurance requires that you jump through several hoops (before the bike is stolen, mind you). If you don't think that you are going to have your bike appraised and fill out the paperwork, then don't factor the insurance into your purchasing decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock, December 22, 2007
By J. Daniels (Berkeley, CA)
This is a somewhat heavy lock, but I live in a relatively high-crime area so I'd rather carry around an extra pound than have my bike stolen. This lock might be overkill in a smaller city, but for protecting your bike in a larger city this lock is perfect.

If weight is of high concern if might be better to invest in some locking axles and buy a smaller lock just to lock the frame; however if you're considering buying the smaller version of this lock be advised that it is not much lighter, as the weight comes mostly from the locking mechanism and not the U-shaped bar.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Broke... Perhaps for the best., August 16, 2009
By Framework (Brooklyn, NY)
First off, this lock got jammed in the locked position the fist day I had it. In a way, I was relieved that I had a good excuse to send it back, because it was not the right lock for me.

Choosing the right bike lock is not easy. If you live in a high crime area (NYC in my case) and have a relatively expensive bike (a carbon fiber Trek in my case) you don't want to buy something that seems easy to cut. This is why I opted for the Evolution Series 4. I am sure that it would not have been cut, but there are some huge trade-offs. First and foremost, this lock is very heavy. For me, it was not worth lugging this lock around.

If you are parking your bike outside, only in the day and in the evening, it seems unlikely that your bike will be taken by someone spending an hour or two cutting through a U-Lock. Something less intense than the Evolution Series 4 will probably work for you.

I replaced the lock with the Kryptonite Series 2 and I am extremely happy with it. I have not had any lock problems and it seems secure enough for my purposes.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Sturdy, but heavy, October 30, 2007

It is a quality lock. Like the rubberized outside and the cover for the key hole. I dont like the weight and the caution you have to take to make sure the key is all the way in, otherwise it wont unlock/lock.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Heavy, Solid Lock, August 8, 2008
By Green David (Fort Collins, CO USA)
This is a nice lock, but contrary to the specs it does not weigh 2.35 pounds. If you pick it up it's pretty obvious that this listed weight isn't right. I weighed it on my kitchen scale and it came in at 3.3 pounds, so I don't know where that 2.35 came from. That scale is pretty accurate.

It should also be noted that the theft reimbursement warranty is also only for one bike for one year.

It's still a solid lock and better than what a lot of people use. I don't regret buying it, but don't buy it because you think it's lighter than the alternative.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Should be bundled with a lockpick, December 4, 2009
By Melanie Archer (Oakland, CA, USA)
Today marks the end of my contentious relationship with this product.

I should've known from the start, when my new key would turn exactly halfway then no more in the new lock, that this "improved" Kryptonite would remove my peace of mind. Oh, to be sure, we had a couple years of relatively predictable locking-unlocking cycles (and I was mindful to be gentle with the cr*p pot-metal key as the product brochure recommends). But today we've had our last argument over whether the lock would let the key unlock it. This wretched, flawed bicycle lock is being sawed from my bike even as I write.

DO NOT BUY THIS LOCK IF YOU EXPECT TO UNLOCK IT REGULARLY.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Powerful lock with a few annoyances, October 9, 2009
By beema
Overall, I would say this lock is really good. It's going to protect your bike very well in most locales. For extra safety I got a cable lock that I loop through this and around other portions of my bike. I'm pretty satisfied with it so far, but I will go over the items that bother me about it. The blue LED key is also pretty awesome.

The biggest issue is it might not fit all bike models well, both in locking and mounting it on the bracket. I ride a Cannondale Quick series bike. I was hoping this would fit around both the Seat Tube and the rear tire for good security, but in most situations it is only able to fit around the Seat Tube because the lock is fairly narrow. If I want it to fit around both I have to position it at a skewed angle which usually isn't possible in many locking situations.

As for attaching the mounting bracket: the Top Tube and Down Tube on this bike model are not cylindrical, instead they are shaped like a triangle, which means you can't mount this lock on either. Having a water bottle cage on either the Seat tube or down tube also makes mounting this bracket pretty difficult. It took me over an HOUR of deep frustration to finally find a place on my bike to mount the bracket and lock where it wouldn't get in the way of my legs when riding. It was midway down on the left side of the Seat Tube with the U of the lock facing upward, but I also had to angle the bracket out away from the bike at a really weird angle, I also had to loosen and angle the silver bracket mount on the lock itself differently.
If you don't plan on bracket mounting this lock then you can ignore all this, but if you do, be warned, you might be in for a LOT of aggravation.
Now that it's mounted it works fine, no problems.

The Kryptonite key replacement/registration is a nice feature but a bit annoying. You goto their website, which is unsecured (very obnoxious) and register your personal info and key serial #, except there are two numbers printed on the key and I'm not sure which is the serial.

The anti-theft protection offer is also better than it sounds, as you have to jump through a LOT of hoops to benefit from it if your bike is ever stolen.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Quality Bike Lock, May 19, 2008

attachment that connects it to your bike is hard to get on... but i decided to just hang it around my seat, so its not a big deal. Definitely a quality lock tho, never had any problems fitting it around fences, signs or parking meters. And it seems VERY secure.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Heavy, but worth the weight, February 8, 2008
By Maringue (Washington, DC)
This lock is a beast, but you can throw it on your bike and feel safe about it. I lock my bike up a lot in downtown DC, so I wanted a serious lock to protect my lovely bike. It has a good sized U-bolt which allows you to lock up to just about anything that is fixed to the ground as well as through one of your wheels. The lighted key is really nice for getting into your lock in the dark. I personally don't use the bike mount, so I can't really comment on that.

Remember, no lock is full proof. If a bike thief really wants your bike and has enough time alone with it, he will get your bike. That being said, there is only one lock with a higher security rating than this one. Locks are a deterrent, and with this lock a bike thief is most likely going to move onto an easier target.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  It's a joke, October 15, 2009
By E. Jeu (Chicago, USA)
This lock is a joke. The key didn't turn when I tried to unlock the U-Lock today. Instead, my key got stuck and I spent 20 minutes to pull it back out. I also needed to carry my bike all the way back to my tiny apartment. Now I need to buy a new lock. It is really frustrated since I have just used this lock for only ONE month! Maybe Krptonite just cannot handle its 'high security disc-style cylinder' technology. Do NOT buy this crap!!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock, but bigger and heavier than Amazon says it is., April 2, 2011
By verygooddog
I've only had my Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 Standard Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket (4-Inch x 9-Inch) for a day, so I don't know how I'll feel about it after some use, but I do want to make a couple of comments.

I first bought a Kryptonite New York LS Bicycle U-Lock ( 4-Inch x 10.25-Inch), but it was too large (12.3" x 6.6" x 1.8") to fit in the side or top compartments of my Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DXP with Side Panniers, and at 4.5 pounds, it was just too heavy. I looked at other Kryptonite locks available on Amazon and found this one. According to Amazon, the dimensions of this lock are 0.8" x 3.9" x 11.8" and it weighs 2.2 pounds. Wrong!! It actually measures 1.8" x 6.6" x 11.6" and weighs 3.33 lb.

I will be keeping the lock because it is just enough smaller than the New York LS lock to fit, assembled, in the DXP top compartment. If I take it apart, it will fit in the DXP site compartment. I'm disappointed that the lock is larger and heavier than Amazon says, but it will do the job.

As others have said, the bracket is a pita, and the lock and bracket will not fit on my Specialized Sirrus hybrid frame unless I remove the Topeak Modula Cage Waterbottle Cage. No real problem for me because I will keep it in the Topeak DXP. When I ride with out the bag, I can bungee the lock to the Topeak Explorer Bike Rack.

I'll do an update when I have more experience with the Evolution lock.

UPDATE 15 May 2012: I've had the Evo lock for over a year in SO FL and used it countless times. It's always smooth and easy to lock and unlock. The U shackle is long enough for almost anything I've wanted to lock the bike to. The Evo looks a lot more solid than many competing U-Locks, and while there are stronger, heavier locks out there, the bottom line is that I still have my bike. You just have to decide what weight/security trade-off you want to make. High bike theft area = heavier lock. So far, I have only praise for the lock.

I also have found another use for the Evo: locking the wooden gate on my side yard. I drilled one 13/16" hole through the 4" x 6" post and another through the gate itself. I slide the Evo through the holes and lock it. No thief with a bolt cutter is getting through that gate!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Easy and fast to break with a power tool, December 1, 2009
By IRC (Chicago, IL, USA)
After reading the other reviews I was sure that this was the right U-Lock for my bike, but I was wrong. This tough looking lock might stop the beginners but it's easy to break for the experienced bike thief.

Any bike lock is as good as its weakest part. This Kryptonite U-Lock can be cut with a portable power tool (for example:[...]). And it doesn't take long to do it since my bike was stolen at noon, in a well light busy campus intersection where it was parked for an hour and twenty minutes.

So, this could be a decent U-Lock if you live in a low-level bike theft area, but won't do it if you live in Chicago or New York. Also, if you buy this, send the insurance paperwork immediately since you have only 15 days from the day of the purchase to do it.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Key Gets Stuck -- Extreme Frustration, December 1, 2009
By time on my hands (retired)
This is the worst lock I ever used. I got this lock because it is long enough to lock two bikes, but the key is incredibly difficult to properly seat in the lock and turn. If you want to have to fiddle around every time you need to lock or unlock your bike, this is the lock for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Tough Lock, Works Great, July 22, 2010
By Do It To It
Well after being an idiot and locking my bike with a cable lock in the city of Chicago (2nd highest bike theft city as I later found out) my bike got stolen (of course). So rather than go to jail for killing the person that steals another bike from me, i decided on buying this lock as a new defense. Yes the lock is a bit heavy, but that is because it is SOLID and STURDY. The mounting bracket works fine if you tighten it correctly AND put the time in to ajust it, and is easy to install. As far as the keys go, I have no idea why people are crying. The keys I recieved were sturdy and were similar to a car key, not a flat easy to bend house key. The lock mechanism works smoothly as long as you put the key in gently, which you should do with all locks anyways. So no problems what so ever. I think people are just being babies. Also, the standard lock is plenty long enough to lock through your rear triange and back wheel and around a pole or bike rack, so if you are thinking about getting the longer lock, don't bother, this one is fine. I suggest getting the 4 foot Kryto cable lock for your front wheel just to be safe. Hope this helps!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Thought the lock was great until it turned out to be defective, August 30, 2010
By Nina (New York, NY USA)
Loved this u-lock until I had major issues with the keys less than a month after buying it.

I've been using it all around NYC in combination with a Kryptonite flex cable on my brand new bike with no trouble at all. Today I had it locked up at work and I insert the key as usual. The cylinder turns and... nothing happens. I happened to have two sets of keys on me and neither of them worked to open the jammed lock. I tried wd-40, and still couldn't get it open. 4 different people tried in turn to get this thing opened before I had to call building maintenence.

The good... the maintence guys tried to clip it with a huge pair of bolt cutters and they didn't even leave a dent in the lock. Finally I was able to get it open after a half hour fight and before they brought out the grinder. The bad... I definately won't be locking my bike up with this lock again. Thankfully this time my bike (and I) were in a safe place - but who knows where I'll get stranded next.

I'm hoping my issues are a fluke occurance. Amazon.com has awesome customer service and they're sending me a replacement. I have my fingers crossed that it doesn't suffer from the same defect.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Key mechanism sucks, July 21, 2011
By Marina
I've been having some serious troubles inserting the key and getting the lock to open. Given the fact that this lock is one of the most secure ones, it's a joke how sensitive it's key mechanism is. I wouldn't recommend purchasing Kryptonite products.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock, March 8, 2011
By Nom de plume (Toronto, ON, Canada)
I love my lock. I have had it for nearly a year and have had no issues. For a little while the lock started to stick, but I just squirted some wd40 into the keyhole, and it has been perfect since. I've been biking around downtown Toronto and using this lock every day since I got it. No issues whatsoever.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Durable but heavy, December 27, 2010
By S
I've had this lock for over a year and it's still working great. Love how there's a cover to protect the keyhole from the rain. Very strong and durable, but it's a bit on the heavy side. But, all good locks are heavy though.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Super Heavy Duty, September 6, 2010
By Luke Ellis (College Station, TX USA)
The first thing I noticed was the weight...very heavy. Within a week of owning it, the key got jammed and I had to return it, luckily Amazon is awesome and had a new one to me later that week. The new one is working fine, just make sure you put the key ALL the way in before turning it...or else, it will jam, and you key might break off inside. This might have been overkill for a college campus, but I figure its worth the couple extra bucks for the peace of mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very solid lock and very well made, June 25, 2010
By wandrson (Austin, Texas USA)
No lock will prevent a determined thief from stealing your bike. The only thing locking does is buy time and therefore offer the deterrent to move onto easier targets. This is a good solid lock that can be used alone if you remove your front tire and then insert this lock through both tires, the frame, and a secure object. You would still need to take your seat/seatpost with you. The addition of a heavy cable (such as the Kryptonite 1007) or a good cable lock or even better a chain lock would allow you to keep the front tire on and still lock it to the frame (along with the seat).

This lock (and the above suggestions) should be sufficient for all but the most expensive bikes in the highest crime areas. A great value. BTW, I don't know if they have changed the keys that come with the lock, but the three I received all seem to be of decent quality (made much like other house/car keys) and have no problem operating the lock easily.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock but very heavy, July 6, 2008
By Mine (Los Angeles, CA)
I have no doubt this u-lock works great, it certainly looks and feels secure. However it is very heavy. I had to buy this size because my bike's tires are somewhat thick (it's a beach cruiser type bike) so the mini would not fit around the tire and the frame. If a mini fits your bike you should go for that, if not get ready to lug this heavy lock around. Also, I would recommend that you get a cable as well if you are planning to leave your bike for a long time or overnight. Otherwise the lock is great.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Why you should be paid to buy this lock ..., March 10, 2010
By Ciaran (some where in Georgia)
Simply put, the key is made out of the weakest expletive. This lock opened up once. I broke the dang thing trying to open it after it had been on the shelf for a couple months, never used, nor weathered. All I can say is the key sucks, the locking mechanism locks, and dont be suprised if this happens to you. & if it does, dont be suprised if their customer support never replies to your emails. Kryptonite == FAILS. Do not buy this lock, look for another manufacturer as I will never buy from these blokes again. They ripped me off!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great with a few adjustments!, April 26, 2012
By T. Peterson (San Luis Obispo, CA USA)
I've had this lock for about four months now and use it almost daily. I came across a few minor issues but found fixes for them. Overall, I'm really glad I got this model. Would-be thieves in Oakland have so far not tried anything on my bike, though I have been careful to not lock it up outside overnight. Also, I try to lock it up somewhere near lots of windows, cars, and/or people such as in front of a restaurant or bar.

Like other reviewers have noted, this won't fit neatly into the space where your water bottle would attach unless you have a large frame. So instead, I've attached it to the shaft that holds my handlebar (pardon my lack of bike vocab) and this seems to work just fine (see photo that I uploaded). It takes some time to get it adjusted just right so that it doesn't move or hit the handlebars.

My second issue was that the lock itself would rattle when riding over anything larger than a bump in the road. To fix this, I wrapped 1/4-1/2" strips of electrical tape around each end of the U bar a few times so that when it connects into the thick lock bar, there is a snug fit. Because of this you have to pull the U piece and the lock bar together slightly when locking and unlocking to get the lock to turn. You can sort of see this in my photo, but it's subtle and hard to notice.

So, with the lock set up like this, I have had zero problems! My key has never been stuck and I haven't had much difficulty removing the lock from the mounting bracket. I'm glad I got the 9" model as it often just barely has enough room with my mountain bike--I think the mini model would be frustrating to find a place to lock up with. Finally, you only need to lock up the back tire from within the frame to the bike rack to lock up both your back tire and the frame...hard to visualize, just Google it if you're not convinced. I use a cable lock to secure my front tire to my frame.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Sturdy lock for a great price, October 18, 2011
By Christopher Wu
I recently bought a new road bike online and to protect this investment, I decided to purchase a higher quality lock. I was used to the flimsy masterlock U- locks but immeadiately upon picking this lock up, I can immeadiately recognize the superior build quality and durability of this lock. For one, it is about twice as heavy as my previous lock and 1.5x as thick.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock for the real world, September 13, 2011
By DEREK MCCARTHY (Acton, MA)
You spent a *lot* on your bike; lock it up with this in a halfway decent location (like a train station) in combination with the Kryptonite Kryptoflex cable, and you can rest easy. A potential thief won't bother with your bike once they see the tell-tale bright orange; they'll move on to an easier target.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Not worried about my bike anymore..., August 24, 2011
By Marcelo Penha (St Pete, FL United States)
I had my bike stolen recently; no it wasn't locked, it was sitting on my carport for about an hour, so when I got my new bike I wanted a lock I knew would work and after much research, I went with one recommended by the "National Bike Registry". Let me tell you, this lock in as they say, "intimidating"! The only reason for the missing star is the weight, but then again, no worries about where I leave it. I would suggest getting the extra cable to tie around other wheels, other bikes, or in case you wanted to lock it around a tree.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Lock has stood up exceptionally well in NYC., August 23, 2011
By Jonathan Jablon (New York, NY)
I am a rider around Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens; in order to keep a bike, it has to have the best security possible. I've had two bikes stolen, and one inexplicably bent in half - but the one bent in half and not stolen, along with my current bicycle, have been locked with this lock.

It's certainly not a lightweight lock, but that's the idea. It's not one you're going to want to carry with you on the handlebars or in a pocket. It mounts on the bike and it's worth every penny. The mount comes with the lock, and it is very easy to install; it even comes with an hex key to install the mount and tighten the clasp on the lock to fit the mount and your bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Would buy again. Do recomend., July 11, 2011
By TuxMan
This is one tough lock that is just the right size. Not as heavy as the NY forgetaboutit locks but has the same advanced design.

New lock style can't be picked. Keys are not weak and will not break with normal usage.

The included bracket is of good quality, was easy to install and holds the lock securely without any movement.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Rock Solid in Brooklyn for 2 years, July 3, 2011
By Liam M.
I've been using this lock for 2 years+ in every neighborhood in Brooklyn NYC and nobody has even bothered trying to steal my sweet trek 6500 so far - I use the it with the full pinheads set (wheels, stem, seatpost, etc). I hated the mount so it's strapped to the rack and you should definitely wd-40 the lock every once in a while but otherwise no key issues. It weighs a ton (helps make me faster on my road bike though) but if you don't want your bike stolen I'd wager it's worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very secure lock, but cumbersome., June 2, 2011
By SarahR
I feel secure locking up my moderately expensive bike with this lock, I know that it would take someone some real skill and tools to get it open but here is the deal, the size of it is causing problems. I initially thought that it would be nice to have a bigger lock to loop through the frame and front wheel, which is quick release, but I have found that it isn't worth the space used. I can't fit my bottled water holders on the bike with this thing, and I have tried every which way. The mounting bracket broke once while I have had it (1year) but Kryptonite was quick to send me another replacement. If you HAVE thought about the size and weight and are okay with it, I say go for it, it is an incredably sturdy and nice looking lock.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock; but the mounting bracket leaves something to be desired., May 14, 2011
By Michael OKeefe (Hudson, NH)
This lock is a heavy-duty U-lock that's perfect for people who leave their bike or other valuable object (probably not a diamond ring) in an urban or high-crime area. It locks well, as long as you're sure to lock it to a secure object (like a bike rack: street signs don't count). The only gripe I have with it is its mounting bracket. It's really hard to get the lock onto or off of the bracket, so I have to jam it on. I always feel like I'm going to break it. Otherwise, a good, high-security lock at a fairly decent price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good, April 30, 2011
By Sam Clemens (Michigan)
I can certainly imagine that the key would break if forced. I think if you're gentle and never force it it should be fine. Occasional lubrication (silicone??) might help, as is the case with many types of non-bike lock.

The mount is ok -- much sturdier than some other U-lock mounts. It's initially difficult to get the lock in but over time it seems to be loosening up. I hope this doesn't mean it's eventually going to be so loose that the lock bounces around or falls out. If you don't have a pretty large frame, or if you have a women's frame, you may not be able to use this mount.

This lock is remarkably heavy.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Lock good / Holder and Warranty bad, October 19, 2010
By Hillel
The lock works fine and is very intimidating. My suggestion is to by an extra cable to go with it, so you can keep both wheels safe.

The part that ataches to your bike and holds the lock is a piece of garbage. The lock does not slide into the holder easily, and the way it attches to the bike guarenttees it slides around while you are riding.

The lock big sell is that in case your bike is stolen you will recieve compensation if they break thru the lock. What they do not say is you need to jump thru a whole bunch of loops to be covered (You have 7 days to fillout the paper work, take the bike to bike dealer and have them give you an estimate, and return all the papers to Kryptonite)

Overall I am not a big fan of the lock, but cable locks will not cut it anymore (especially since thevies can cut thru them easily.)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock!, September 12, 2010
By Pamela
I've had this lock for about a month now and it is working out great. It comes with a piece that you put on your bike and then you can clip the lock on to when you are riding. But since I have a womens mountain bike, there isn't enough space to attach it, but for a buys bike, it should work out fine. So when I'm riding, I either throw the lock into my backpack or if its just a short ride, I loop it through my handlebars and just let it sit there.

The lock has done a good job standing up to the rain, since I keep my bike locked up outside at all times. But sometimes you have to pull it off really hard if it got wet inside. But once you rub off the bars, it pulls out fine again.

I live in the city, and this lock is definitely secure enough to scare off any bike thieves. Also, this is a great price compared to buying it at a bike shop.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Kryptonite Evolution Saved My Bike, August 25, 2010
By Rick M. (Davis, CA)
After much consideration, I opted to spend the extra $ to purchase this lock with a Kryptonite cable. I recently purchased a bike for $900 and didn't want to lose it. I locked my bike next to a friend's bike that used a cable and padlock. His bike was stolen, even though it's value was considerably less than mine. This lock not only is strong, it deters thieves!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Larger than I expected, June 29, 2010
By Anonymous
This lock was larger than I expected. I was considering getting the longer version of this lock, but I'm glad that I didn't.

The metallic piece on the side has a corresponding piece that attaches to the frame. I think the idea is that you can use the two pieces to carry the lock while it's not in use. I don't bother with them, I just let the lock hang through a bar beneath my seat and the middle of the frame.

The lock comes with 3 keys, and one of the keys has a blue LED light so you can use the lock at night. There's also a plastic cover that can slide over the keyhole to prevent dirt, etc. from getting inside.

I also tested this lock against a vulnerability I saw on YouTube. Apparently some of these locks allow you to use someone else's key. My fiancé and I both bought these locks, and I tried swapping the keys but the locks didn't open.

Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to test the theft-prevention capabilities of this lock, but I think just having my bike locked would deter a would-be thief to look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Wow. This is a heavy, massive lock, May 11, 2010
By Mark in Tempe (Tempe, AZ USA)
This is an impressive lock. I have the cheaper/lighter Series 2 Standard (gray body). The body of the Series 4 is about 1/3 taller. About the same thickness. The shank is 1mm thicker. The shank is not a "bent foot" like the Series 2. Both ends of the shank are the same. (You can insert the shank into the body either way. Not sure if that's good or bad. Just a difference.).

I've seen people complain about problems with the key. I thought I had a problem when I first tried to open the lock. I remember reading an exclamation to be sure the key is fully seated. I pushed (not turned) really hard and it went in another 1/4 inch. Then it opened very easily.

Never twist the key with force. Always push it in with force, and twist easy. Also, occasionally use some graphite (made for locks) or silicon spray. The Kryptonite site recommends this.

I got this as added protection. For quick errands, I'll carry the lighter Series 2. When I intend to be in a store longer, or a place I don't trust as well, I'll carry the Series 4. If I distrust a destination, I'll carry both.

Finally, regarding the customer image showing a Series 4's shank cut through, that means nothing. With enough time (and privacy) you can use a power cutting tool (a Dremel-like device) to cut anything. The difference between a cable, Series 2, 4 or "fahgetaboutit" locks is how long a thief will spend, publically visible, using hand tools. Saying "I cut the lock in my shop" is meaningless.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very secure lock, April 15, 2010
By tony (Rochester, New York)
Cant see anybody hacksawing or crowbaring this baby open. Have not had my locksmith friend see how pickable it is. Three kes are included which is a bonus and one even has a light for evening visibility if you should require it.
The trade off is that this lock is heavy which for those of us who have carbon alloy frames and bikes you could lift with your pinky it kind of destroys the purpose. On the other hand I have ridden thru some rough neighborhoods and a bod on the head with this lock attached to the chain I also carry to lock my rims up would render a would be theif unconscious. All in all I am very happy with this lock and it's security value on my very expensive bike.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good, Big Lock. Terrible Bracket Design, April 2, 2010
By dafunki8 (Colorado)
The lock is big and sturdy. The key seems to work fine in mine. The length enables the lock to attach to many different objects. The bracket and mount are absolutely horrible. One of the reasons that I purchased the lock was to have it attach to my bike. But the lock is nice enough that I will find some other way to carry this monsterous lock around. If you are torn between this and the mini, I would probably by the mini. This one will be a pain to lug around until I find another way to attach it to my bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock but not without faults, March 2, 2010
By Ronald Duren (NEW YORK, NY, US)
This a great lock and would have earned five stars if not for issues of size, weight and ease of use. I live in Manhattan and need a lock of this quality to give me the peace of mind to leave my bike unattended while enjoying the city. The good features are the size giving you ample room to lock your bike to any rack, parking meter. pole etc. The size and weight are also the major weakness. The frame size of my bike is 20 inches and this lock is too big to mount. The plastic EZ mount hardware does not look like it was designed by the same team that is responsible for this lock. My solution is to carry the lock and a coiled six foot cable on the rear rack of my bike secured with a bungee cord.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock, bad bracket, February 17, 2010
By laminator
Decide what you will about the strengths of this lock, but keep in mind that its mounting bracket is useless. I couldn't get the bracket to fully tighten, and then when I tried to remove it, I had to break the bracket to get it off my frame! I'm actually kind of glad that I destroyed the bracket, because its design for putting the lock in a out is also terrible, and would have resulted in bloodied knuckled and a dented frame every time I removed or placed the lock in its bracket. There are other mounting options out there, but I shouldn't have to spend $20 more on a proper bracket after dropping $45 on a lock.

Aside from that, it's a good strong lock that's long enough to secure my bike to oddly shaped bike racks. And people breaking their keys off in the lock must be really fidgety - just gently work the key in and the lock will open fine. If you encounter any resistance, just wiggle to key and try to move it down into the lock further.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Medium duty lock, crumy bracket, October 30, 2009
By G. Powell (Seattle, WA USA)
I bought this lock for my kid's bike. The bike isn't a high end bike, (I got it used for a hundred bucks or so at a garage sale.) so I figure this and a 4 ft 10mm cable for the front wheel, plus the 5mm seat cable ought to at least make thieves try the next bike over first. The lock is considerably thicker than the older Kryptonite Evolution LS U-Lock lock I got when I traded back my old Kryptonite LS cylinder key lock. And that trade in is the reason I've kept buying Kryptonite locks. Talk about doing the right thing! Anyway back to this lock. It's rated "9" which isn't as high as the New York version but it looks reasonably tough.

On the key breakage, the folks at Kryptonite must read these reviews because mine came with a note saying, "Don't force the key!". And I've got another Kryptonite lock Kryptonite New York Noose 1213 Chain Bicycle Lock with Evolution Series 4 Disc Lock Chain Bicycle Lock (4-Foot x 3-Inch) and I ride a lot, and I've had no problems with the lock. Which is a good thing because cutting that chain and lock off my bike would be a royal pain. This key looks similar so I'm not worried. However I will remind the kid to not force the lock.

On the negative side, the plastic dohicky for holding the lock on the bike sucks. Just plain poor design. My recommendation is to put the lock in your shoulder bag, or panniers. It's heavy but you'll be happier than trying to make this holder work. I also slid the silver bit off the lock, why carry it around when you aren't going to use it?

I live in Eugene OR and just got a new Long Haul Trucker Surly of course and needed a good lock to make me feel at ease. It's done its job!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock, mediocre plastic., April 16, 2009
By P. Smith
I can only assume the lock has been doing it's job, since my bike is still in my possession. Although I can't guarantee that it's actually been a target of theft :P

My real problem is the adapter they provide to clip to the frame of your bike. In temperatures above 50 degrees its fine, but it shrinks when it gets cold and the lock becomes difficult to attach to the frame. I park the bike below 40 degrees, but these cold post-Winter mornings tend to be a pain since the cold makes my hands hurt and even more so when the lock flies off the adapter from me pulling on it and I bust my knuckles open. If you bike in colder climates I'd recommend finding another way of attaching the lock to your bike when you're riding.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Kryptonite Evolution Std U-lock, October 22, 2008
By E. Tan
Fast shipping, strong looking product. Got it for my girlfriend, I use a Kryptonite NY fahgettaboudit chain. Swear by it. Neither bikes have been stolen yet. Used on a college campus and downtown detroit. Kryptonite is the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid Lock, September 15, 2008
By A.G. (Santa Barbara, CA)
Don't spend good money on a bicycle and lock it up with the cheapest lock that you can find. Spend the cash on a good lock, like this one here. This is a very solid and sturdy U-Lock that can take a good deal of abuse without breaking. The entire U portion has a rubberized cover over it so your bike does not get damaged. The key is also a new design, not the old cylindrical key that could be opened with a Bic pen in a few seconds. There is even a key that has an LED built into it so you can see the keyhole in the dark. Kryptonite also has a lifetime key replacement system so you're never stuck without backups. Also consider the Kryptonite New York series as those are slightly more secure than the Evo series, but don't get me wrong, no one will be taking your bike without expending considerable effort and time if you properly lock up with one of these. Great lock overall, although the mount leaves something to be desired. If you plan on mounting this lock on your frame make sure there is enough room somewhere in the frame triangle for it. My Giant Cypress does not have room to frame mount it, so check first if this is critical for you. Otherwise throw it in your backpack and go.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  so far excellent, September 8, 2008
By oldcircleeyes (columbus, oh)
I'm really liking this lock, I feel safe when I use it. Locking up my bike is a big thing, I've put a lot of work into my bike and someone just stealing it would really suck. I trust this lock to do what I bought it to do. I fits through both my frame and my front tire and I can also get it through a buddies frame too (not in addition to the front tire though). I don't think anyone has tried to bust it, but I can imagine that they're going to have some trouble with that one.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock, May 8, 2012
By andris310 (San Francisco CA)
I got it because someone had tried to cut my cable lock in the garage of my apartment building, but they ether didn't have enough strength to finish the cut or got scared away by someone. I knew I needed a new lock and after a quick research online zeroed in on this lock. I read some reviews where people were complaining about key snapping off. My key has worked fine and I'm wondering how did they manage to break it off! The key on my lock goes in the socket so easily and turns with no effort! If you use your common sense when using the key and don't force it in any way it shouldn't be, the key wont become an issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great secure lock!, May 5, 2012
By Majestic (Tucson, AZ)
I've had this lock for 4 months now, and the key still opens/closes it just like new! (unlike my cheaper Bully lock).

It just fits perfectly through my bike's front tire and the frame and the item I lock it through. Kryptonite is known as the best for security, so I feel plenty safe using it.

I also use my cheaper Bully U-lock on the back tire for double security. Kryptonite's quality is far better.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent bicycle security, April 30, 2012
By Turbo Boost
This is a great, heavy-duty bike lock. I had some trouble at first mounting it on the bike's frame because it's a hard-tail with an acute geometry... so there is not much space between the top tube and the bottom tube. But I was able to get it on eventually with the very tip of the lock not within the frame's triangle. That's ok, though. I highly recommend this lock over the weaker, less-secure locks.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Heavy Lock, April 12, 2012
By ravenshand
This lock adds some heft to the bike, which you can really tell when you lift and carry the bike.

The included bracket to attach the lock to the bike frame, itself has some size. Do to my bikes frame, Trek 3 Series, with water bottle, you are very limited in where you can attach the lock and not have it get in the way of your legs. I ended up attaching it to the seat post and moving the reflector, it is off to the one side but its out of the way.

If you can try out the various sizes; MINI, STD, LG this will help you see what fits the bike and remember to include what you'll able to secure the bike to.

One thing, I am hope does not become an issue it the plastic slot where the Lock (silver part) slides into. With the jarring it takes its seems that the lock already has more wiggle room than it started with. Will have to see after a few months and years if it holds up.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Absolutely useless lock in NY...and any larger city, April 3, 2012
By R. Tucker (NYC)
I had higher expectations for this lock. It seemed sturdy enough, certainly formidable looking and not one I would think could be easily broken. The company touts it's credits without hesitation. Well, I went into a store yesterday and within less than 5 minutes I came out to see a thief making off with my bike that had been responsibly locked with an Evolution Series 4 lock from Kryptonite. Just curious, I checked youtube this morning to see if there were any videos about this lock and there were plenty. It's incredibly easy to pick the lock...in seconds!! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect Lock, March 26, 2012
By Kevin D
Locking my bike up with the Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 u-lock feels un-stealable compared to my old cable lock. The lock has been flawless these past two weeks, the key has held up where other bike locks, the key would snap inside the lock requiring me to return the lock. I feel that the Kryptonite will give me years of security for my expensive bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Finicky Lock Cylinder, March 21, 2012
By Stephen (Richmond, VA)
It's true, you can snap off your key in this lock. I bought this as a Replacement to an OnGuard Bulldog, which decided never to unlock itself (fortunately while not in use). The locking mechanism on this is slightly off, and sometimes you put the key in and can't get the lock to work. Fortunately, it's pretty easy to get to work if you have some patience. The tumbler at the bottom of the lock sometimes gets out of sync with the rest so you have to rotate your key until it matches the bottom tumbler. I've noticed this happens more frequently when the lock is in a vertical position (and harder to unstick). So if you can, try to keep the lock as horizontal as possible.

Length of the lock is fine, you can easily lock 2 bikes to a post. It is a bit heavy, which should deter some potential thieves on the prowl. I'm fairly happy with it even if it is a bit finicky at times.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This Lock Far Exceeded My Expectations, March 7, 2012
By LJS (Minnesota USA)
I have never owned a U lock before so I guess I didn't know what to expect. I've always felt locks were a necessary evil and a PITA. However, this is by far the best lock I have ever owned. Here's why:
- It is extremely secure. It would probably take me more than a battery pack to get through this lock with my cordless grinder.
- The mount worked beautifully on my Specialized mountain bike. I didn't think the mount would fit because of my cables and water bottle holder, but it fit beautifully on my handle bars. It holds the lock securely even on moderately rough trails.
- The lock takes just seconds to apply. It comes off the mount quickly and easily and locks my bike to a sign post just as quickly. I've always fought with cables before. Now, in less than 30 seconds my bike is very secure (although I haven't been in a bad enough neighborhood to pull my front wheel and lock it too).

I purchased 4 and 6 foot cables to go with the lock so that I can lock everyone's bike when we go family biking. The 4 foot cable fits in my seat pack nicely, so I've always got it with me in case my bike breaks down and I have to leave it somewhere.

The only negative is that the lock is a little heavy. When I first got it, I wished that I had bought the similar Series 2 lock that is lighter. I honestly don't think that the additional weight and thickness of this lock is going to make a difference. So that may be something for you to consider. But now that I know how easy this lock is to use, I'm very happy with the purchase. I highly recommend this lock.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Lock is solid, key is TERRIBLE, March 5, 2012
By blurg
I bought this lock, took it out of the box, unlocked it once, locked it over the handlebars of my bike, and took the bike out for a ride. When I got to my destination, the key would not unlock the lock; instead, the key bent out of shape. The exact same thing happened with BOTH of the other keys that came with this lock. I am returning this lock now; I will probably have to remove my handlebars to get it off of my bike. I've never had any trouble with any other Kryptonite locks, but this model has serious issues.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Cheap construction.... fails quickly, March 2, 2012
By Larry Scott (San Francisco)
My wife bought me this lock for my birthday in October 2011.
I have probably ridden my bicycle 12 times since then.
The lock has seen very gentle use.
Today, I rode my bike to the store to get a sandwich.
When I went to lock my bike, the key spun freely in the key hole
and does not engage or disengage the locking mechanism.
Given the premium price paid for this lock, I am pretty upset.
The construction of this lock is very poor!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  theft guarantee only 1 year!, February 6, 2012
By Cajtar (SoCal, USA)
I think this lock hits the sweet spot between price, performance, and weight. The U part is hardened steel which means forget going thru it with a hacksaw or bolt cutters. Don't bother with the cheaper series2 models (e.g. Kryptonite Kryptolok Series 2 ATB Bicycle U-Lock (5-Inch x 9-Inch)), it is not hardened so makes an easy target. It's heavy ya, but what do you expect for a massive hunk of forged steel! I can't speak to the actual theft resistance of this lock and hope I never need to, but Kryptonite does have a good reputation and I believe that alone is some form of deterrent.

The lock cylinder is buried DEEP in the lock body, the key itself is about 1.5" long. I would think picking it is near impossible. I have not had problems with the lock being sticky or such, but live in SoCal and thus this lock does not get exposed to too many elements. I doubt it will ever see salty streets in it's life. They offer key registration for free - and I'd take them up on it. If you ever lose your keys and have not written down the key number you may never get the lock opened again! Thankfully you need the key to both open and lock the device so it seems unlikely you could accidentally lock it around something.

The bike mount looks pretty useless and seems similar to other Kryptonite jobs I've owned in the past. I advise carrying it in a backpack or strapped to your rear rack. I have a bike with hydroformed tubes (i.e. not round) so I can't install the mount even if I wanted to.

This lock is sized just big enough to wrap a parking meter post, plus the frame of the bike and both rims (of a road bike). If you have a mountain bike with a bigger frame and wider tires, I'd take some measurements before assuming this lock will go around all that stuff. In general, you should put your bike in the locking config and take some measurements using your intended pole/post before dropping $$$ on a lock.

I was disappointed in one thing though...one of the key factors in selecting this lock for me was the anti-theft guarantee. They will cover your bike up to $2250 in case your ride is stolen on account of the lock being broken/compromised. Nice right? Yeah, but this is only good for 1 year. And you need to provide either a copy of the original sales receipt for a new bike or a written estimate on letterhead from your LBS for a used/older bike. And you need to get this off to Kryptonite within 15days of purchase! Amazon is pretty fast in shipping, but be forewarned...I am finding this is not so easy to do. My local LBS is kinda giving me a hard time about the estimate so I need to check another LBS. Thankfully I live in a heavily populated area so there are a few options around, but if you live in a smaller town and can't get that written estimate - might be tough. My LBS told me just to print out a copy of the website that shows original MSRP - but I called Kryptonite today and they won't accept it.

They will extend the term to 2yrs for additional $10 or 3yrs for $15. Seems like a small price for insurance - but it just rubs me the wrong way to spend some pretty good cash on a lock only to have to shell out additional cash for a reasonable guarantee. I would think 3yrs would be standard and you could up for 5yrs. 1yr - hmmmpf, this is disappointing. Also, if you live in NY state - well fahggedaboudit, you don't have the option to extend the guarantee at all. You get's 1yr, take it or leave it.

PS: I did hear from an LBS that just recently a dude had his bike stolen while on a Kryptonite lock, and they did honor the guarantee and he did buy a new spanking bike to replace his stolen ride - so its nice to know they will honor it in good faith. The hassle certainly seems worth it...

B safe and keep the rubber side down

Thieves don't even try to mess with this one. Make sure you lock it to a solid pole they can't saw through.
