5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bicycle hoist works well, screws are OK!, October 5, 2009
By Transplant Recipient (USA)
I recently purchased and installed the Delta El Greco Ceiling Hoist for my mountain bike. After reading the the reviews of other hoists from Rad and Racor, I chose the Delta because it had the least negative reviews.

Most of these negative comments were related to the supplied mounting screws. The screws are typical Asian-made hardware, not the best in the world - but the screws supplied are not defective. With the proper drive tool, they can be easily used. They are Pozidrive screws, I added an image to the photo gallery to illustrate how a Pozidrive screw is identified. These can be driven by a Phillips driver, but it requires care to properly align the driver with the screw drive recess. If the driver is allow to move off center to an angle while apply drive torque, the bit will easily "cam out."

To successfully use the supplied screws, a proper screwdriver must be used. Most people, myself included, do not own Pozidrive tools. I used a #3 Phillips bit in a cordless drill/driver and had no trouble with the screws. However, if you're not comfortable with this, or don't have a #3 Phillips driver, then it's easy enough to go to the local hardware store and buy some screws for under a dollar.

As to the operation of the hoist after getting it installed, it works great. The bicycle raises fairly evenly (stays level) and the rope catch holds it securely in place once the bike is up. As another reviewer mentioned, it works sort of like a venetian blind type device. It's still wise to also use the supplied rope cleat to tie-off the excess rope as an added safety measure.

I love the way this bicycle hoist works and am very happy with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Getting Organized, August 5, 2007
By BJ (Virginia)
This product mounted great. I had to use my own screws. The screws that came with the purchased product were cheap and the heads stripped easily. Other than that I am pleased.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for garage, November 18, 2007
By L. Risser
I have house cats with claws, so the ceiling hoist in the garage is a tire and stress saver: easy to install (I used a 1 by 6 five-foot board to secure the hoist to the beams) and easy (actually, fun) to use once it is up. The line locking device was a nice surprise. I read somewhere that the screws that come with it are no good, so I bought new wood screws for the hoist and the board and never even tried the screws that came in the box. The one thing to note here is that I have only been using the hoist to store my mountain bike for about three weeks. If the parts or the line will hold up over long wear, I don't know. If freezing temperatures or the humidity in the garage will affect the parts, I don't know. I do know that not worrying about cats leaping up to bike stands to puncture rubber and not worrying about cats slipping out of the house while I navigate the bike out the door is heavenly. I ride more because I bought this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This is a Great Device, April 16, 2008
By R. Edgy (Brunswick, GA)
I bought 2 of these for my garage and they work great!!!! I bought these after seeing a similar product for about $40.00 and checked Amazon and found these for half the price. They were easy to install but I used my own hex head screws with a large fender washer----just for my peace of mind. I have 14' ceilings in my garage which made the provided rope about 2 or 3 foot short but I will manage. The device works like a mini blind, pull the rope to the left and the bike lowers, pull it to the right and it locks. My 100lb wife has no trouble operating the hoist.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A "super" hoist, February 8, 2008
By Mike Brand (Bellefonte, PA USA)
I bought two of these and used them to hoist my two kayaks up to the garage rafters. They went up slick and easy -- and out of the way. Great product. I'd recommend them without reservation.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for bicycles, October 2, 2008
By Paul A. White
I purchased four of these to try and get the bicycles in my garage out of the way. Mounting them correctly takes a bit of time, and you do want to ensure you mount them correctly. I think they are rated for 50lbs, and I anchored mine in to the ceiling with 4-50lb anchors. Once they are up they are really easy to use. The hoist has a safety catch on it that won't let the item you're lifting fall unless you pull the cord in one direction. I would caution however(and this isn't a flaw with the ceiling hoist, but was more of an issue of my mounting), that if you quickly release the tension on the cord, and drop the bicycles(or whatever you are hanging), it has the potential to exert a lot more force on the hoist. When I quickly dropped the bicycle down, one of the hoists came out of the ceiling and pulled the anchors I put them up with with it. Once I secured it back up with stronger and additional anchors though, I had no problems. Each hoist has 2 parts which can accomodate up to 8 screws in it. If you manage to hit a stud, you can easily get away with just 4.

Overall these are a great item and I plan to buy more of them to make room in my garage.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Fantastic product, but you will definitely need to buy screws, August 12, 2008
By Minta J (Portland, OR USA)
My husband and I recently purchased two of these pulley systems to store our bicycles with. The whole system is very easy to use and install. As many other people have mentioned, the screws that come with the kit are really low quality and I definitely recommend purchasing better screws.

We mounted both kits to the ceiling of our garage and they work beautifully. We are able to store our bikes above head level so that they are out of the way and not taking up any floor space.

I highly recommend this product as long as you remember to buy better screws.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Quality Product, April 10, 2009
By T-Bone (Lincoln, NE)
Have not mounted it yet, but the lift seems like its made with quality in mind, and the included rope is of good quality as well, something that other lifts recieved bad reviews for. Very happy with the purchase.

Update: Nov 2009. We have been using this hoist and have had no problems with it, it is very sturdy and is easy to operate, the safety catch works great and keeps it from falling when lowering or hoisting.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great way to regain garage space, September 4, 2010
By Micronaut101 (PA)
I bought two of these to get two road bikes off the garage floor and out of harm's way. The installation was easy and the product works well. The screws supplied are just fine as long as you drill 1/8" pilot holes before screwing them in. If you screw them in with a power screwdriver without pilot holes you'll probably strip or break the heads.

I mounted mine at right angles to the ceiling joists so I had to mount a 2' X 4' first and then attach the puley assemblies to that.

I ordered another one to hang my extension ladder as well.

love the product. Its inexpensive and does the job, I bought four of them. The only negative thing is the rope started to fray after the first few times of use. Needs a better rope.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Ceiling Bike Lift, September 6, 2009
By terryem (McMinnville, OR USA)
I used a board between the joists to mount the rack. Then screwed the rack into the board. The rack works great but I agree with 3 privious reviews that the screws are that great. I used deck screws instead. Easy to put up and works great. Because I've only had it up for 2 weeks now I don't know how durable the cord will be. Easy to operate and I'm ordering a second one.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for the price, August 28, 2009
By Mary (TN)
We ordered two of these to hang kayaks. We replaced the screws after reading some of the other reviews and with that small change it worked great. It took about 1.5 hours to hang them both, but most of that time was finding studs in the ceiling. The rope feels a little cheap, so we may replace it eventually, but my kayaks are up out of the way and it didn't break the bank, so I'm not complaining!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bike Hoist did the job, June 10, 2008

No problems, quick shipment. I did use my own cabinet screws to make sure it was securely fastened to the ceiling. The screws they provided were hard to turn. Excellent product otherwise.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great idea!, May 30, 2008
By Afakasi (Crooked River Ranch, OR)
I purchased two of these because we wanted to get our bikes up off the garage floor (actually my bike was still in the living room from Christmas because we just didn't have room in the garage). My husband installed them without complaint and so far, everything is great. This is really a good solution to storing a bike! I would recommend this to everyone!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Adequate for my purposes, October 10, 2007
By JavaKrakerToa (Oklahoma City)
Pretty good deal for the money, just be prepared to substitute your own screws. The ones they provide are cheap and won't stand up to a power driver bit. I mounted the two pieces on a 4-ft board using bolts plus heavy screws that went through to the ceiling joists. Only problem was that it was difficult to match up the spacing I needed for mounting the fixed hoist parts with the 16" spacing of the joists. Still, it was better (+cheaper, +faster) than buying the pulleys and rolling my own.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Product has changed, April 21, 2012
By Daddyjohnboy
I purchased the Delta El Greco Ceiling Hoist in 2009, mounted it in our garage, and it has worked perfectly ever since. However, I recently purchased another and the product has changed significantly. The mounting plates are about half the size of the original and although the pully mechanism appears to be the same, it does not operate as smoothly. Even with all of the reviews mentioning the bad mounting screws, they are still terrible. After predrilling holes, the screws still stripped so it's best to discard them and use better screws. Still, the unit works and the price is reasonable, although I wish the manufacturer had maintained the original design for a few bucks more. Be aware that the latest unit does not match the picture on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Reclaim your garage!, July 2, 2011
By TLH (DENVER, CO United States)
Let me start by saying that I think someone who is going to retrieve their bike, ride it, and re-hang their bike every day may find this system slightly inconvenient. This is because it takes 30 seconds or so to access one's bike, and another 30 seconds to put it away. This is less convenient than leaning one's bike against the garage wall or lifting it onto a hook. That said, this system smartly makes use of high, otherwise inaccessable space, and frees up precious floor space in a garage. The locking device which prevents the bike/hooks from coming down unless the rope is fed at a particular angle is both necessary and seems to work well, enabling older children and grandmas to hoist a bike up safely. I have read previous comments indicating the hardware is inadequate, and I disagree. Maybe the manufacturer has upgraded the hardware since those reviews, but what came with the units I received was satisfactory (Phillips screws, approx 2 inches long, maybe 3/16" in diameter, 8 screws for the ceiling and 2 for the cleat on the wall). To be successful with these screws, one needs to 1) pre-drill, 2) use the correct size Phillips driver (#3, a large size that may not be in everyone's tool drawer) and 3) lube the threads with bar soap (optional).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  worked very well, June 24, 2011
By Manny (USA)
Installed this product in my garage to hang my bikes. Installation was easy but finding the studs took a while, not the product fault of course. My bikes are now out of the way and beautifully hanging from my ceiling. The locking system is very good and allows me to lower or raise the bikes slowly and in increments without worrying about the bike suddenly falling. I used the included screws which were very adequate. Used a drill for the pilot hole and hand tightened the screws, no problem.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Was delivered quickly, and installed in a snap., May 21, 2011
By Christopher J. Price (Firestone, CO)
I looked a few of these on-line, after seeing overpriced models in a SkyMall magazine. Settled on this one due to price, and favorable reviews. So far, so great. It was delivered quickly, and I installed both of them (one for my bike, and one for my wife's) in a couple hours. Would have been quicker, but I modified the install directions a little bit, to get the bikes up just a bit further, for more clearance. Great product!

By marylandmom
I bought two of these to mount both my son's bike and mine in the garage. They are easy to use and seem very secure. I would recommend this for both adult and children's bikes. The only complaint I have is that the cord is extremely long and puddles on the floor.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Happy with hoist., February 18, 2011
By bgamazon
I purchased bike hoists to lift my bikes up 14ft to the recessed area in front of my a/c unit. Everything worked perfectly; from the latch system to the bikes lifting evenly on both ends. The only frustrating part of mounting the hardware, was the fact that I did not realize that the hardware is hollowed out on the backside of the pulleys and I was mounting both hardware pieces to same beam. So, instead of using a sold piece of wood between the two hardware pieces and be exposed. I had to cut two pieces of wood to fit under the hardware only and mount them to the ceiling first then mount the pulleys to the ceiling. Everything works great and the bikes are holding strong 1 month later.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Kayak storage, August 7, 2008
By D. Wehr (PA)
I purchased two units too hang my kayaks tight against my garage ceiling. I needed to do some modifications since the bike hooks didn't work for this application. I swapped out the hook pulley for another straight pully to hang clips off of it and webbing. This worked well although I could not use the cord locks since that required pulling the rope from directly underneath the pulley and the kayaks were in the way. All in all is was cost affective approach and worked well when complete.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great for kayaks, September 28, 2011
By Beth Irvin
Great solution for kayaks at a great price. Storing the kayaks near the garage ceiling frees up other space in the garage. It does take a little work to install and the cord could be a heavier quality, but I can't complain for the price. You can always replace the cord when necessary.

Very easy to install and operate. I use it for my bike and it does exactly what it supposed to do. Seems to be of good quality, no problems. If I had more than one bike I'd buy another one. Obviously ceiling height is the most important thing to consider.

I'm happy with how quickly the product was shipped, how easy it was to put together and the ease of use. Long rope so that it can go high or be attached to a wall far from the hoist. I'd recommend this product.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Rocketbox finally out of the way, March 9, 2012
By Kinsley Binard
it took a little while to get the hoist installed but that was because I hate being up on ladders so its not the fault of the product. Love having the huge rocketbox finally up and out of the way. It was tricky to hoist the box as one end would go up and the other wouldn't, had to do it in small bits, raising it by the rope then leveling the box then hoisting again, repeating this until it was up. Did have a bit of screw stripping issues but was able to work through it...
