|
The Thule 912XT Roadway 2-Bike Hitch Carrier is a great all-around hitch carrier designed to support and transport up to two bicycles weighing up to 35 lbs each conveniently at the rear of your vehicle using your 1¼ inch or 2 inch hitch receiver. Features include: carrier arms with the capability to fold down when not in use as well as away from the vehicle to allow access to vehicle back openings, heavy-duty construction and carrier arm cradles with detachable anti-sway components built in for each bike mounted. All-around great full-featured hitch carrier for two bikes. View larger. Hitch Switch folds arms up tight to your vehicle when not in use. View larger. Stay-Put cradles with anti-sway cages prevent bike-to-bike contact. View larger. The New Standard for Performance and Ease of Use Designed with compatibility in mind, the Roadway 2-Bike Hitch Carrier works with either 1¼ inch, or 2 inch hitch receivers by means of an included adapter. It is also incredibly strong, stable and full featured, with durable high-strength steel construction and varied standard components, including: Stay-Put cradles with detachable anti-sway cages that prevent bike-to-bike and bike-to-vehicle contact which dramatically reduces the chance of scratches to vehicles and bikes. In addition, by way of its easy-to-use Hitch Switch lever, the Roadway 2-Bike Hitch Carrier has the ability to fold its carrier arms down at the push of a button when not in use and even tilt the carrier's upright structure away from vehicle, allowing for hatch or tailgate access (bikes must be removed first). This means that you can always get to every corner of your vehicle when you want to, without having to remove the carrier. This ability to fold carrier arms also makes it unnecessary to remove an unloaded carrier in order to perform everyday driving tasks like parking. Also impressive is the Roadway's virtually tool-free assembly. This makes installation a breeze and removal just as fast when the need to do so eventually comes. Outstanding product!!, May 26, 2007
By Joel Dauteuil (Burlington, VT USA)

This is 5-stars and it's not even close.
I'm sure there are cheaper solutions but I didn't want to fool around with other products and then end up having to buy this anyway a year from now.
I've heard good things about this Thule rack from friends for years and now I'm in a position to attest to the quality - worth every penny.
Pros:
- Easy to put on and take off.
- Bends out of the way so you can get in and out of the hatch back (4-Runner)
- Rock solid engineering and quality materials are obvious - I'll have this for life - I have no doubts.
- SL2 lock for securing this to your hitch and making "thief-proof" is a must and I'm very impressed with how they pulled that off as well. Buy the lock right away - you're going to want it.
Cons - none yet to speak of - I'll update this if something comes up.
Comment: I have my doubts about the lock that secures the bikes to the rack - the cable lock - I don't question Thule's product - I think it's as good as anything out there but I don't have any confidence in cable locks in general securing my bikes.
I haven't bought a solution yet because I need to figure out the measurements. But, I'll likely buy 2-4 Kryptonite locks to secure the bikes to the rack. I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything less. Cable locks are just too easy for thiefs to cut. Ideally, I'd like 2-3 Kryptonite locks with the same key.

Pretty Good, August 27, 2008
By JarHarms (upper, IL)

2 bike version mounted to a 2002 Focus ZX3 in a 1 1/4" hitch. Works well enough to transport my bikes without having to remove any wheels. The lower folding portion does make hatch opening easier. I chose the Roadway for the folding top portion. This great when the rack is on your car but no bike is being carried, it folds down improving clearance and doesn't look as funky. The receiver post is on the long side for my car but the designed length is probably that way for more universal fitment. I swear a car behind me at a stop light is going to run into the up-post someday. As much as I don't like reflective stuff, some 3M reflective tape on the lower end of the up-post might be a good idea. The included strap works fine but I opted for the Thule plastic sway cages. The strap is being used to keep the front wheel form moving side to side. The Thule snug tight 2 lock works well.
I suggest using anti-seize on whatever bolt/locking pin you use to install this. Also make sure you use some sort of lube on the receiver tube and post to prevent corrosion which could lock the rack into the receiver.
Best bike item I've bought yet......besides my bike.

No Complaints, June 11, 2007
By R J (Los Angeles, CA United States)

Everything works really well with the Thule 912 rack and my 1.25" receiver. It was easy to install and has been easy to use. It even comes with a tool to tighten up the bolts. I also bought the 'no-sway cage accessory' but haven't gotten around to using it yet. The cinch down strap that came with the rack seems to work fine anyway. I carry 2 adult bikes easily and it takes me about 3 minutes to put them on and even less to take them off.

Solid construction, good design!, April 19, 2008
By Puddle Pirate

I read a few reviews of this and other bike racks of comparable size and construction and decided this one was for me. I am an occasional biker, but I travel alot by car (college student) and so a 2-bike rack made sense (I only ever carry my bike).
It has worked out great so far!! Before I installed a hitch on my car, I put the rack on a friend's car for a trip. No sweat over the installation! Then, when I had to switch it over to my car, it was no problem at all. Both cars were able to handle 4hrs+ with the bike with no damage to car, bike, hitch or rack. The folding ability is a must (I own a Volvo wagon) and it works well. The security lock is a good idea, it was worth the money when my car was parked for an extended period of time in a public area. Also- the adapter for the mount (2" to 1.25") works perfectly. I was very impressed.
No regrets! I would recommend this product to anybody.

First off this thing is Beefy.
I have this installed on a 2002 Impala and have not had any problems with the hitch mount (or bikes) hitting the ground.
Instead of the supplied tool, I recommend having a small socket set in the trunk. 6pt is recommended as there will be less of a risk of stripping the bolt. I am just not a fan of any supplied tools.

Nice Hitch, Bad Connection, July 24, 2010
By B. Porter
|
|
Overall the rack is excellent quality and it holds the bikes very securely. All the other reviews already hit the high points. But there's one thing that was overlooked in all those reviews and I feel it's a huge design flaw. The connection to your vehicles receiver hitch. The rack I received makes the connection to your vehicles recevier hitch with just a bolt and a couple washers. The bolt isn't even long enough to go all the way through a 2" receiver so you can put a nut on the other end and secure it properly. Furthermore, the hole the bolt goes in isn't even big enough for a standard 5/8" hitch pin to go through. Their connection solution of a bolt and a couple of washers isn't secure enough for me and I believe it's actually a law in this state and others to have a cotter pin or some other sort of locking mechanism to keep the pin from coming out. I'm sure their Snug-Tite lock fits perfectly, but for $50 it's way overpriced. It's cheaper for me to buy a decent locking hitch pin and drill out the hole on the rack. The rack itself would get five stars if it weren't for their method of connecting it to the receiver hitch.

Excellent folding 2 bike hitch rack, January 21, 2011
By Michael V. Bergamini
|
|
This replaced (well, supplements, as I might need to carry 4 bikes sometime) a old 4 bike Thule non-folding bike rack that was a pain because I had to take it off to park the Honda Pilot in the garage. It will fit my road and mountain bike at the same time. I now leave it on all the time with an old Thule hitch lock on one side and the bolt that came with it on the other; if you use the lock washer that comes with it, the bolt doesn't tend to work loose. I have no negative comments but it would be improved by adding day-glo colorant to the plastic endcaps of the bike supports (so non-cyclists who don't pay attention don't walk into them by accident) and some sort of built in padding on the vertical to prevent chipping of the back hatch of the Pilot when need to open it but you don't want to lower the bikes (right now, I have several turns of electrical tape wrapped around the vertical, just I have on the old rack).
I'd recommend this to a friend.

Helpful Hints, June 28, 2010
By Mapo

A very solid piece of equipment. The bolt which binds the carrier to the trailer hitch has a tendency to work loose. I put some loctite, a superglue product, on the bolt and this appears to have taken care of the problem. I purchased an inexpensive cable type bicycle lock at Walmart rather than the expensive Thule lock. So far so good. I just wrap the extra cable around the carrier post etc.

Outstanding, solid, easy to install, August 17, 2009
By A. Davis (Philadelphia, PA USA)
|

I got this rack when I got a new (small) SUV, and the old trunk-mounted bike rack wasn't compatible. We wanted something a lot sturdier anyway, and this is definitely it. I have complete confidence in the Thule brand -- we didn't even consider another. And this particular rack is the one that works well for us. It's easy to install and remove, and it's very easy to mount your bikes. A couple of well-placed levers make it easy to fold the rack section down when not in use and to slant the whole device back (without the bikes mounted) so you can open the hatch of the SUV. (You can buy longer hitches that keep the bikes farther away from the back of the vehicle if you have a larger SUV.) This is a solid piece of equipment. I did two hours of highway driving with the bikes secured to the rack -- they didn't move! No wobbling, no wheel spinning -- nada! I feel very secure with this rack, and of course, love the fact that we don't have to deal with the inconvenience of a roof rack.
Bear in mind that you need to have a trailer hitch. And if you're going to be leaving your bikes unattended for any length of time, I would definitely recommend locks for the bikes AND for the rack. It's so easy to remove the rack, that a thief could very easily take it and the bikes with very little effort.

Not bad, but needs major improvement, March 10, 2011
By relgnarw2000
|
|
After looking at this product for sometime, I decided to bite the bullet and make the purchase. Once I had the product out of the box, I was shocked at how heavy it is...Almost 40Lbs. This bike rack is made of solid steel and is put together pretty well. I quickly assembled the product and wasn't very happy at how far the rack sits from my bumper. I was disappointed to find that the hitch bolt is just that....It's a bolt that threads through the 912XT to your hitch. Not very secure and makes for a pain to install and remove the rack from the car quickly. You cannot use a locking pin to secure this to your vehicles hitch. The diameter of the hole is smaller than that of a locking hitch pin...Frustrating. Since I wasn't pleased with how far the bike rack sat from my bumper and I was frustrated that the rack can't be secured to my car, I decided to make some modifications to the rack. I had a buddy take 6inches of the hitch shaft and had him drill a new 5/8" hole in the shaft as well. The rack now sits closer to my bumper and I can secure the rack to my car with a locking hitch pin. By removing the threads on the hitch shaft, the hitch will wobble, so I purchased a hitch collar/anti-wobble collar which secures the shaft to one side of the hitch and does not allow the hitch to wobble. The cradles that the bike sits in seem pretty large and if you have a Stump Jumper with rear suspension you will find it impossible to secure. The distance between the bars doesn't work with rear suspension. I have managed a work around on this too!
Overall the rack is not bad, but Thule needs to make some major changes to this before I consider this a great product. Now that I have a semi-custom bike rack, I'm pretty happy. I guess you could say that Thule provided the ground work for me to build a better bike rack. I can post pics if anyone wants to see the finished product.

I love the anti-sway device that it has. With our old rack the bikes would scratch against each other, this rack keeps them separated.
The only thing, I wish the straps were fixed so that nobody could steal them. We always remove them just in case.

awesome!, March 22, 2011

great bike rack. keeps the bikes from swinging around and very high off the ground
2 (not major) issues:
1) A strap ripped when i overstretched it a little bit, so don't overdo it. replacement was cheap directly from Thule
2) USE THE BLUE STRAP! Took my bike out on a really windy day going down the highway @ 65mph. ALMOST LOST THE BIKE TWICE. It was dangling from one of the holders after it slipped off one. I ordered another blue strap from Thule for a few bucks. Well worth it. (This will be a very rare issue...this is a quality rack)

912xt roadway, January 9, 2011
By GK (Charlotte, NC USA)
|
|
We just finished installing the Thule 912xt.
I believe this is an awesome bike rack with solid construction - will last a very long time. We have a Honda CRV 2005 (spare tire at the back)with a dealer installed class 1 1-1/4" trailer hitch.
Couple of points
1) Buy the ST 2 Lock from Thule - it will connect superbly against the trailer hitch much better than the standard receiver bolt provided. It really is a necessity.
2) Bolt in the upright assembly first as opposed to the second step. If done later - the carriage bolts might not go in perfectly.
3) Buy a good wrench from your local home improvement - the supplied Thule tool is really not that good but will suffice in a pinch
On the slight negative side - the bike rack is slightly heavier than some of the competitors such as Yakima.
Good luck and have fun!

Just as advertised. I carried 2 mtb bikes of the same size; loaded front to rear; bought a bike adapter and rolled out to my ride. The rack folds up easily and inconspicuously. I mounted it to the car, bought the Thule lock, and just leave it there. Very easy to assemble. Highly recommend it.

Excellent Product, August 31, 2009
By Deal Finder (Indianapolis)
|
|
I was originally looking for a bike rack for a 1.25" hitch on Craigslist, but I couldn't find anything I liked. After reading the reviews on the Thule 912 I broke down and paid full price for it. I've been very happy with it. There's virtually no sway in the rack, and the fold down arms mean you can leave the rack on your car even when you're not transporting a bike. It was very easy to assemble.
My only complaint is that Thule separately sells a locking mechanism to secure the bike rack to your receiver which should be included as a standard accessory. The rack bolts to the receiver so it does require a wrench for a thief to remove the rack from the car, but the lock would add an additional level of security.

Very good, September 10, 2008
By Alarmed Mutant (USA)

This bike rack is a very good buy. It's very stable and is built solid. The rubber straps that hold the bike down don't seem cheap and seem like they will last for a while. The rubber that the bike sits on is soft and wont scratch your paint.
The bikes sway when you drive and the front wheel turns. To counter that there is a cinch strap that comes with it and I strap the crank to the rack and then take the excess and tie the front wheel off and stick the excess in the trunk door. I took an old inner tube and wrapped it around the vertical part of the rack so the pedal doesn't scratch the paint.

Highest quality bike rack I could ask for, May 30, 2008

This hitch type bike rack has "quality" written all over it. Assembly was easy. Attaching to the SUV hitch was easy and fast. Couldn't be more pleased. I would suggest going ahead and ordering the anti-sway attachment for the bikes since it is inexpensive and effective. Instructions were easy to follow.

Reget the purchase, August 7, 2010
By concernedconsumer

If it were not for the the expensive in shipping the product back and that I need to transport my bikes next week, I would return the device. The supplied bolt that secures the rack to the hitch for a 2 inch hitch will only extend half way into base. In other words it goes through the hole on one side of the hitch frame and into the Thule base part way. It does not extend all the way through the base and through the other side of the hitch frame. That is unless you want to want to spend an additional 50 dollars for the locking base bolt that gives you "extra stabilty." This part extends all the way through.

Easy to put together and very versatile. One of the clips to lower the bike arm was busted during the shipping, which PO'ed me since I just paid big bucks. Delivery came in original box and should have been repackaged or boxed in another box. Otherwise, I would have given 5 stars.

Vehicle - Jeep Wrangler
Bought this to extend my biking radius outside my immediate surroundings. Installation was easy, and it is a snap to load and unload the bikes. I use the included strap to secure the bikes in place, and they don't move at all.
The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the lower section doesn't lower enough. You can put it down to open your trunk, etc, however for a Jeep, there isn't enough clearance for the stock-sized spare tire because the rear door swings out. Consider this if you have a vehicle with a similar design.
Looking at the base, I can see how they could easily modify the design to let it go lower, however, as it is, you need to abandon the use of your cargo area. This could also be remedied by a quick release system, but the threaded bolt that mounts the rack to the hitch prevents that.

Worth Every Penny., November 7, 2011
By Markus E. Adams
|
|
First, I received it before the estimated delivery date, which is usually the case when I buy through Amazon; but was relieved to know that everything I needed (from beginning to end) was included in the box. I saw a post from someone who had a problem in this area.
I did purchase an extra lock to secure the bycyle's to the rack (strictly for extra support) during transport, but that's the only other expense I incurred. Some who've posted say you should buy the lock to lock the rack to the hitch on the car. With the hitch on my car and where the hitch is located, anyone wanting to steal the rack would have a very difficult time trying to do so.
Secondly, it is an extremely solid and sturdy piece of equipment (35 lbs. of steel and composit material) and it was very easy to install. If you read and follow the instructions there should be no problem with installation.
Finally, I live just outside of Pittsburgh, PA and drive a Subaru Legacy Outback w/ a 1-1/4 hitch. My family and I took a short road trip up to Lake Erie's Presque Isle. That's, roughly a 2.5 hour, 200 mile trip ONE WAY. I stopped at rest stops along the way a couple times to check on the bikes and I'm happy to say that after the 5 hour, 400 mile round-trip journey I had absolutely no problems whatsoever.
Overall, I know that some who've posted say this bike rack is too expensive, but I think it's worth every penny. I firmly believe that you get what you pay for. I will recommend this to everyone I know who is looking to purchase a bike rack. And if I had to purchase another, I wouldn't change a thing; I'd buy the same one again...and will when the time comes.
If you want to purchase a quality bike rack, to transport and protect your bikes this is the one.

Just didn't work out, June 18, 2011
By Amanda Lenz (Indianapolis, IN USA)
|
|
I was very happy with the Thule 912XT rack - it just wouldn't work for my Electra Townie 7D. It's a women's bike, so it must use the adapter bar - not a problem to attach that and hang it to the rack, but because the saddle post is so much lower than the handlebar post, the rear of the bike sits much higher than the front. In order for this to work, I'd have to remove the front wheel. Additionally, the rear wheel stuck out about 8" past the driver side of the car... just not doable for me. There's also no way to affix the anti-sway bracket on this style of bicycle, so I was really concerned about high-mileage trips.
All that being said, I gave this 4 stars for ease of installation alone. I also purchased the Thule locking hitch pin to install this on my 2" receiver. It took me all of 20 minutes to put the whole thing together, which I thought was really impressive. I wish this had worked out - I'm hoping the 990XT will.
