My daughter did her science fair project on whether these UV cleaners work or not. After a month of using toothbrushes regularily and keeping some of them just sitting out and putting some of them in this sanitizer, she grew the bacteria off of each toothbrush.
Hate to say it, but bacteria from one of the UV toothbrushes started growing first! Overall, bacteria was on each toothbrush - the UV sanitized ones; the ones sitting in the cup on the bathroom counter; the brand new ones that went straight from the package to the petri dish... all of them.
So, I hate to knock the product here... but we didn't think it made any difference.

More harm than good, April 12, 2008

I was very excited when I found this product. However, when I started using it, my mood changed quickly. I am not doubting that the UV light is killing germs. But the toothbrushes never dry. They are wet in the morning from the night before, and they are wet at night from the morning. Nothing can be wet 24/7 and remain germ-free. I tried returning this item for my money back, and was told no due to sanitary reasons. itouchless has terrible customer service. I would seriously not recommend this product if you seriously want to kill the germs on your brushes.

Neat item!, October 7, 2007
By Krista (Brush Prairie, Wa United States)

|
This is really a neat idea! We have a UV light on our well system so I know that it kills bacteria very effectively. This seems like a pretty good idea. However, UV lights kill via exposure so any part of the toothbrush that isn't bathed in light, will not be sanitized. I turn my toothbrush several times & run additional cycles.
The four slots are perfect for our 4 person family. It is very easy to use! But I won't give it 5 stars as I suspect it isn't a thorough cleaner - you might be better off using mouthwash or something that will kill the bacteria better but this is very convenient, not messy & even the kids can use it!

There is a 7 minutes auto shutoff timer for easy operation. So far the batteries are still working fine. My 2 kids and husband love it. I would recommend it to everyone especially if you have kids.

It seems like a good idea, but the moisture stays inside the container and mold forms very quickly unless you're taking it apart and cleaning it daily.

Quality consistant with low price, July 14, 2008
By joy joy

I went for this model because it's cordless, we don't have an outlet near the medicine cabinet where we keep the brushes so it made sense. I agree with the previous review, there is always a pile of moisture inside the removeable tray, how can there not be bacteria present? The batteries died very fast even though my husband and I are the only users. I thought this was strange so I went and got rechargeable batteries, have to recharge them once a week. Then, after only 2 months, the UV bulb blew out. Now I don't know where to find a replacement bulb. I quit! Should have paid a little more for a better model.

I bought one, the light sometimes came on, sometimes didn't. So, I exchanged it. That one's performance was even more sporadic. I returned it and bought the Sunbeam, which I'm VERY happy with.

Bulb burned out quickly, October 31, 2008
By Quaziphoto007

I have no problem with figuring things out but why the bulb stopped working after less than 2 weeks is irritating. If I had time I'd send it back. The goal was to sanitize my childs toothbrushes, he throws them everywhere. Goal not met with this device.

Cheaply Made and Awful, June 6, 2008
By AndieMatt

I had this for one day and found rust spots on my countertop the morning after I first used it. The unit wasn't sitting in a puddle but evidently the little bit of moisture that got underneath was enough.
Because it's a nice size and doesn't take up much room, I perservered and placed a coaster underneath it. That seemed to have done the trick for a little while until I pulled my daughter's toothbrush one morning and found rust on the bristles.
Maybe I just got a dud but I'm not willing to take another chance on it. It went straight in the trash and now I'm shopping for a new one.

Think about it for just a minute. These gizmos are absolutely useless., December 2, 2009

Think about it for just a minute. These gizmos are absolutely useless.
(1) Anything that gets on your toothbrush head was ALREADY in your mouth. Unless you think your houseguests are cleaning their shoe soles with your toothbrush while you aren't looking.
(2) You are sitting a wet toothbrush head in this gizmo. Which means it is sitting in a puddle of water that is likely to mold/mildew. So you can put mold/mildew INTO your mouth (that was NOT in your mouth before).
(3) The puddle of water is likely to (a) rust out the innards of this gizmo and (b) short-circuit the gizmo's electronics.
(4) The American Dental Association says these gizmos have no proven beneficial health benefits:

Use Hydrogen Peroxide Instead, June 25, 2008
By B. Gabriel (Marlborough, MA)
|
|
There is a much cheaper alternative to this product.
Go to the drug store and buy a quart bottle of hydrogen peroxide. It should cost about $.99. Come home and fill a small glass with the hydrogen peroxide. Then put your toothbrush in the hydrogen peroxide for about an hour. At the end of the hour you will have a disinfected toothbrush. You will notice that bubbles will form around the toothbrush as the hydrogen peroxide disinfects it.
I have read that hydrogen peroxide degrades in sunlight. That is why they put it in a dark colored bottle. I just leave my toothbrush in the hydrogen peroxide over night with the lights off. I try to flex the bristles a few times also to make sure it penetrates into the bristles. Remember, hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizer / bleach and is used to whiten teeth. I am not a rocket scientist but I know that bacteria and viruses don't like the stuff at all. It is also used as a rocket fuel, so don't go mixing it with the chemicals from your son's chemistry set. :) Other than that, the use of hydrogen peroxide should be uneventful and will get the disinfecting job done at minimal cost.

Collected water at tray not so sanitary..., December 19, 2010
By RhondaM
|
|
Love the concept and design of this. We have four people in our family, 2 with electric toothbrushes, and a small bathroom with one outlet that is not even close to the sink. So needless to say I needed a sanitizer that was battery operated and compact enough that it would not fall over. Bought this and loved it BUT water collects at the bottom of the tray and even though I rinse the tray DAILY the water that stays behind starts to turn color. The way the tray is formed prevents you from completely cleaning and drying the tray. I've used towels, a baby toothbrush, even my hand held steamer to try to properly clean this yet there is always water at the bottom. The toothbrush heads lay in this water - dirty water. So although the UV rays are killing the germs, my toothbrushes are not sanitized because it sits in the tray with dirty leftover water. 1 star for great concept and works well, I just wish there was a way to clean the tray better.

Not sure yet, March 4, 2010
By Grey8matterz (Ronkonkoma)

I am not sure if I like this item yet. I certainly find it hard to believe that this TINY UV light can kill anything, never mind what is growing on a toothbrush. What I would like to add to everyone's discussion, is that the directions that come with the sanitizer tell you to clean your toothbrushes BEFORE you use them. If you put them into this sanitizer wet they will sit in the pool of liquid in the bottom cup. Each of the 4 brushes sitting in the SAME cup, as there is no division of the cup for each toothbruh. It's disgusting. If you want to use this thing correctly you have to put your DRY toothbrush in for sanitizing. This item is NOT meant to store your brushes. You have to leave your toothbrush someplace where it can dry. Also, the cup in the bottom needs to be cleaned DAILY!!!! I think I am going to purchase the toothbrush sanitizer that uses heat and steam and throw this one away.

Great Sanitizer, March 2, 2008
By Stacey L. Prall
|
|
I love this toothbrush sanitizer. No more musty smelling toothbrushes. The unit is so compact that I put one in my shallow medicine cabinet and one on the pedestal sink for the younger kids. I did use a marker and put an initial below each hole so everyone in the family always puts their toothbrush back in the same place.

Piece of JUNK!, April 29, 2009
By dianellen (Houston, TX)

I bought two of these, used the first one for about a week and it just stopped working, tried new batteries...nothing. I had bought a second one for my son so I got that one out and tried it...that one didn't work at all...even with fresh batteries, no light, nothing. A complete waste of money. Both went in the trash. DO NOT BUY!

short lifespan, April 27, 2010
By MixtyRep (Harrisburg, PA USA)

I liked this little unit because it is compact, easy to use, easy to clean and it holds my toothbrush and my daughter's toothbrush (which is always a weird shape like Ariel or Snoopy) without a problem. The inner tray comes apart and fits right into the dishwasher (on the top rack), and it's one of the least expensive out of any of the UV sanitizers on the market. Automatic shutoff after, what I believe is, 6 or 7 minutes is a nice feature too (when it works). I really like having a toothbrush sanitizer because it just helps me feel like my toothbrush is cleaner and I do see a difference in shortened recoup periods for sore throats and coughs; maybe it's all in my head and I just bought into the hype, but I swear these things really do work. Here's where the bad part begins...first off the unit eats batteries like candy and sometimes the auto shutoff doesn't work so it stays on for hours and eats the entire battery in one shot! That I can live with, but after a few months the unit completely stopped working, I replaced the batteries and nothing. I thought at first that the bulb was out, but the indicator light on the front doesn't even turn on anymore which leads me to believe the unit is completely dead. I was very disappointed. I gave it a few ""gentle"" taps against the counter top and still nothing, so now our toothbrushes sit in a disgusting tray of murky water (as there is no UV light to assist in the drying process) until my new unit arrives. PS: This time I purchased a VioLight unit, a little more money but I'm hoping to have better luck, and I have two VioLight travel cases that haven't failed me yet.

Not Impressed, February 2, 2010
By Rhonda Hakundy Jones (Harrisburg, PA)

The openings on this product really are not large enough for todays crazy toothbrushes. As far as I can tell, the UV function works. The light comes on, but how do you know if it's really killing germs and bacteria? It's easy to use, but I wouldn't purchase again.

Excellent idea for sanitizing these days, November 30, 2009

I purchased this sanitizer for my mother and she just loves it!
She had one previously, but it finally wore out after 7 or 8 years.
She puts in more than one toothbrush at a time and even puts her
razor in to sanitize it before using it. It is common for people
to reinfect themselves after having colds, etc. This is one way to
protect yourself!

Love this!, March 29, 2011
By Karen Dempsey (Brownwood, Texas USA)

This is an excellent product and the price is good for the quality you get. I sanitize my toothbrush every day. I heard Dr. Oz recommend covering your toothbrush because of germs and "poo-poo" crystals that float in the ari after flushing, which totally grossed me out so I couldn't order this fast enough! I feel much better about the cleanliness of my brush now. :-)

It may look cheapy but . . ., January 6, 2009
By Trudy Persavage (Coal Township, PA USA)

When I first took it out of the box, I thought it looked like a low-tech cheap knock-off of a fancier high priced one I had seen elsewhere. But I decided to test it out. I used it for a week, twice a day and then I took a swab and rubbed it all over the bristles of my toothbrush and put it into a culture lab dish and waited to see what grew. Surprise! Surprise! Very, very little compared to my daughters brush which we didn't put in the pod! I am very pleased with how well it works and how easy it is to clean.
