Ideal for hiking, travel, and emergency preparedness, the Aquamira Frontier emergency water filter system is the perfect addition to your 72-hour emergency kit. The Frontier filter's proprietary blend of microscopic carbon, binder and antimicrobial particles is tested and certified to remove more than 99.9 percent of cryptosporidium and Giardia while also helping improve water taste and eliminate odors. At the same time, the filter is also easy to operate: just attach and expand the straw, submerge the filter end into the water source, and drink through the straw. It's just like drinking soda from a cup or bottle, or you can even drink directly from a water source, such as a stream or lake. And at less than 1 ounce, the Frontier slips easily into a daypack, shirt pocket, or travel bag, so it's always ready when you need it. A single Frontier unit filters up to 20 gallons (75 liters) of water.

Aquamira's Filtration Technology
Aquamira's blend of filtration particles is heated beyond the melting point of the binder material until the particles adhere to each other in a process called "sintering." The result is a highly porous, carbon-impregnated filter block with a tightly controlled pore structure. Aquamira Filtration Technology incorporates both mechanical and absorptive filtration processes to remove both physical and chemical contaminants. Although the Frontier filter does reduce bacterial and viruses, it is not certified to remove the more than 99.9999 percent of bacteria and 99.99 percent of viruses required by the U.S. EPA water purifier standard. For maximum protection, use the Frontier in conjunction with water treatment drops or water purifier tablets.

About Aquamira
Aquamira water treatment drops were introduced to the outdoor market in 1999, and have been a favorite of top outdoor guides and instructors ever since. The original idea was simple--people should be able to drink water anywhere, and the water should be safe to drink, taste good, and be easy to treat. This idea inspired the company's research team to develop the technology for a variety of portable drinking water systems and a line of water treatment products that effectively treat water in all kinds of environments, including when camping, traveling in a foreign country, or faced with a disaster. More recently, Aquamira has expanded its vision to include providing basic life-preserving items for both individuals and groups, such as villages in developing countries. Aquamira is headquartered in Logan, Utah.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  DONT BUY, February 11, 2010
By William (scottsdale)
This "straw" only filters down to 3.0 microns.
This will NOT filter out viruses.
Minimum you should get is 1.0 micron rating or below as it will inhibit Cryptosporidium and Guardia (the cysts are larger than this in size).
Even this is not really effective enough as most viruses cannot be inhibited by a filter with a micron rating of more than 0.01-0.03 microns.
Do your homework before you buy any survival product!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty good, but be prepared for initial carbon, April 7, 2010
By Gil (California)
This system is much like everyone mentions. It's light, weighing about as much as 5 quarters. It's compact, about the size of a roll of pennies. The filtration unit seems pretty sturdy and would probably not crack if dropped. The straw seems OK, about the same quality as the flexi-straws you get with $10 plastic water bottles. I'd worry that the straw might crack with repeated use, but it should be fine if you use it only for emergency purposes (i.e. rarely).

As with all carbon-based filters, this one has a lot of dust when you first use it. I forgot this detail and was surprised by the straw full of coffee-colored water on my first draw. There is a note on the unit that warns about this dust (which I didn't notice until later). The note implies that all of the dust would disappear after the first draw. That is not true. I've drawn about 4 cups of water through the system, yet there is still very noticeable dust in the water. It's no longer the color of coffee, more like weak tea. I'm OK with this, but my wife and daughter would complain (of course, they probably wouldn't complain too long if there's no other water).

In sum, I think this is a good product and recommend it for emergency use. But I suggest drawing a few cups of water to remove the carbon before you store it in your emergency kit.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Essential item for third world travels, August 11, 2009
By whereishawkins (Chicago)
I bought the Aquamira filtration straw as a lightweight way to keep safe and not get sick from water-born illnesses (Cryptosporidiosis and Giardiasis being the two major ones) while abroad. I still carry water filtration tablets while abroad as a "just in case" item, but let's face it - that's a pain to deal with and you need to be planning ahead. Sometimes you just need to drink now.

I really can't get over how light this thing is. It weighs less than an ounce, and fits easily inside of any pocket you can think of. The collapsible straw is a bonus. The straw is rated at being able to filter around 20 gallons of water before it's discarded.

The price and size make this a "must have" for any hiker/camper/traveler/survivalist. Sure, you'll probably not use it, you'll be glad you have it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  An Absolute Must!, October 19, 2010
By D. Tennimon (Oregon)
This thing is great. You can drink from a mud puddle and it still taste clean. One time I was camping and it started raining so I threw up the poncho and put my metal cup out to collect water. Well pigment from the poncho came off since it hadn't been used before, as well as smoke that had collected. I tasted the water pre filter and it was foul, undrinkable. but with the filter it was clean and cold. My friend tried the filter and said yeah taste like water, then I had him taste the unfiltered stuff and he just about puked lol

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great addition to my pack, May 14, 2009
By Jennine L. Wardle (Kenmore, WA United States)
I've been looking for a small water filtration system for my hiking pack that didn't rely on yucky-tasting chemical tablets and drops. When I saw this on a survival gear review online, I immediately bought it. It's so small and light that everyone should add it to their camping/hiking gear, emergency bag or glove box/first aid kit. It also fits comfortably in a pocket for extreme situations when you don't necessarily have access to your other gear.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This is perfect for survival kits, February 6, 2009
By Elizabeth Nijoka (Texas)
I saw this item in an online example for a survival kit. My sons are scouts and needed to put together a wilderness survival kit. These are absolutely perfect. When the other parents saw these, they asked me to order for them. I feel really comfortable knowing that these are easy and ready to use at the last minute.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Be a survivor, man., April 27, 2006
By Ivan O'Pinyon
Take it from a guy who drinks copious amounts of water, this filter is the king of survival items. "Survivorman" Les Stroud has, in fact, contracted giardia in his survival adventures. Les is a teacher who's lessons are sometimes taught at the expense of his health. His lesson? Don't take chances with parasites or bacteria. This handy little filter fits in your back pocket and will filter up to 20 gallons, enough to sustain one person for days to weeks. I keep one in the car, one at home, and I never hike anywhere without one.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  you don't have this yet? :), June 26, 2010
By solocanoe (fort smith, ar)
ok, here's the deal. put this in your wish list...next time you need some $$ to get up to the free shipping...add one. then keep doing that until everyone in your family has one of these for their emergency pack.

Tablets are great and light, but still a pain to use. boiling is best, but sometimes you just can't. this is less than an ounce! It's not perfect, but it's so small and light...it will be WITH YOU when you need it. better safe than sorry. It will taste bad initially (carbon) but just spit out the first few draws and you'll be fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good for the price, September 8, 2010
By gadgetjunki
Works well to filter out the dirt or little thingys in the water. I live in a place where the water is fresh and clean, most of the year anyway (rain forest in Alaska). I drink the water in moving streams and rivers but the risk of getting sick still exists. this water filter wont prevent you from getting viruses but it's also better than nothing. There are other simple ways of purifying the water, like using a clear drinking bladder or bottle after it has been in the sun for a while. the problem is that you need to filter out the solids, this little product works well for that. The carbon filter also makes the water taste better, especially if you use chemicals to treat your water.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Unreliable Buy At Your Own Risk!, May 25, 2011
By houutbv86rv
I got these for my emergency kits. I admit the straw is a bit flimsy but I don't plan on using it only for emergency which I hope is never. It is very lightweight and looks just like the package. I do wish that it came in a small tube (both filter and straw) as it is they are separated and you'll need to rubber band them together or find some sort of little tube to put them in so they don't break or crack.

I def. recommend them and you do need to clear the filter a few times to get the coffee look to go away. I actually am planning to buy another with my next purchase they are so light weight it is well worth the money for some piece of mind and beats the tablets when your dying of thirst. Great for backpacking, emergency car kits and 72 hour kits. I pack this along with some coffee filters in case the water has some dirt or other sediments that may clog the device.

Update: I have 4 of these filters now and all of the straws but one has cracked at the bottom and one at the top too. It appears these straws dry out and become brittle easily esp. here in Arizona. I have been able to turn the surviving straws over and use them upside down but it doesn't give a good water flow. I also tried taping the cracks but I fear it is just not reliable enough if your life depended on it.

I'll try coating the 4th straw with Vaseline but at this point it seems somewhat futile. Buy at your own risk.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great little filter, March 29, 2010
By seg (Bay Area, CA. USA.)
For the price, portability and weight of this filter, Aquamira has hit a home run
for all who enjoy the outdoors. Have used it in many sources of water, delta to high sierras, no problems whatsoever. great for ultralight camping, treking, safety, emergency preparedness and even all around just fun toy for the kids, this filter seems to be a fantastic way to assure a form of clean rehydration when and if necassary.(please be a wise guardian with your children when I mention it as a toy for them, they need to be guided in life and safety and that's your job.)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  very practical, August 6, 2010
By bp
I have two of these and one of the "pro" version. I keep one in my car kit, one in my dayhike kit and the pro goes in the family minivan, mainly because it is rated to filter more water.

I love having multiple methods of making water clean to drink, so this filter is always paired with a guyot designs stainless steel bottle and water treatment tablets, in order to have multiple options, depending on the situation. On overnights, I carry a steripen as a primary purification method and the rest are all backups.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Amazingly small and light, March 22, 2010
By wulfstan (San Jose, CA United States)
Weighs not much more than a bottle of water purification tablets, and without the nasty taste. A must have for your daypack, cargo pockets or survival kit.

A bit of carbon dust will be there, but it is harmless.

Yes, on a real backwoods hike, you need better. But this is so small and light, it is more of a survival kit item, as opposed to your everyday water filter.

This one of those "better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it" items.I have not yet needed it,because I have been lucky enough to not have to need it.That said,it could really save your life at best, and save you from some kind of disease at worst in an emergency situation.Besides, they are really inexpensive and fit into your pocket. How much is your life worth?

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Better to have and not need..., February 1, 2010
By Tradecraft (USA)
The Aquamira Frontier Emergency Water Filter System is one of those items that is better to have and not need than to need and not have. Hopefully you would never be in a situation to need this product but if you do it is a great last resort filtration system. If given the opportunity I would still prefer to boil water, use water filtration tablets or even a higher quality filter. But, if this is all I have I am still good to go!

This system is very light, doesn't take up much room, is simple to use and priced within everyones budget. It can filter up to about 20 gallons which means that it will last a very long time. It wouldn't be a bad idea to keep one of these in all of your packs.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Cheap straws, May 11, 2011
By Daddy_of_4
I got these for backup when I go backpacking and I suppose that they will work OK but... The plastic straw that it comes with is very cheap and flimsy. One was split right out of the package and another split when attached to the filter. I wanted to test them before I really needed them, and I am glad that I did. I suppose that they will work as backup, as long as you replace the straw with a better one, or have an alternative backup filtration.

If you have these as part of an emergency preparedness kit, or are thinking about getting them: don't. Go get yourself several cases of bottled water for the same price, and just rotate your stock.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  This is my forth one, March 11, 2012
By J. Hansen (Wyoming)
This is the forth one I have owned. It is convenient, light and I know it works. It can be used in a stress situation as there are only 2 things to do, attach the straw and drink. Don't forget to rinse it the first time as there is a LOT of charcoal dust in the filter initially, but after that it is ready to roll. It doesnt last forever, but it never claimed too. It says that it is good for 20 gallons. That is as far as I will go with it and then get another one. No sense getting sick when prevention is less then $20. I like it.

Does exactly what it claims...works well, and very lightweight. You will get some discoloration of the filtered water due to the carbon filter, but in real emergency, I don't think you'll mind. Is probably not virus rated, but in a real pinch, oh well...

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Water Filter, August 28, 2010
By Rob
This Item is a good Emergency Water Filtration System, I keep it in my SHTF bag inside my Compact Emergency Survival Pack. Very compact unit easy to store in small packs. The down fall on this item, The Coal Filter is hollow for easy flow of water into the drink tube, though completely seal from direct water flow this filter can easily be damaged if not handled with care as I had to return my first filter kit as it had been damaged in shipping and the bottom of the coal filter itself was severed.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great!, June 10, 2011
By Negative459 (Seattle)
Ordered one of these for my emergency/disaster kit. Smaller and lighter than I expected, even after reading the reviews. Excited to have it and hoping I never have to use it. I read on the back of the package that maximum protection is achieved by using it with the Aquamira water treatment drops or purification tablets so I'll probably pick up some of those to be safe. It looks like you can either use the straw to drink directly from a water source or, if you're creative, you could use a funnel or plastic bag and some rubber bands to filter water though it into a storage container. 20 gallons is a huge amount for such a tiny unit! You could probably use the survivalist trick of using coffee filters to pre-filter the water to extend the life by a few gallons, too. Very pleased with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A Must Have!, July 26, 2011
By Nathan
I just got back from hiking Zion Narrows top down, (16 absolutely grueling miles over 2 days). I bought one for all 7 of us on the trip and all worked flawlessly. When we began the hike, the outfitter who dropped us at the top said not to filter the water from the first 5 miles until the second creek came in. None of us had any water, so used our filter straws the entire time. No failures, 3 days after the trip everyone is doing fine, except for the knees and ankles! This item is a must have!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for what it is, DONT USE IT AS YOUR ONLY FILTER, April 13, 2012
By TallTexan (Dallas, TX)
This thing shouldn't be trusted without boiling or treatment for sure though. The manufacturer even states that you should use it in conjunction with tablets. This will filter particles and bad taste out, but not the creepy micro crawlies that make you sick. Better than nothing though... just not as a main filter.

This would be a good thing to have in conjunction with a treatment. You can boil water or use iodine to kill viruses, but you will still have muddy water. This will give you clean water, just NOT PURIFIED. DON"T DRINK FROM STAGNATE WATER with this. You probably don't want to drink from any water source with this other than tap water or maybe a mountain spring without boiling the water first.

It is good for what it is. Just don't mistake it for a water purifier or a bacteria filter.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  water filtration, June 11, 2011
By Be like the man when whos feet h..
I bought this item due to its size and ease of use. Although it is good enough to filter a lot of the germs found in standing water or running water. I will still opt to boil my water where possible. In a pinch it is better than nothing and you don't have to worry about side affect from stuff like iodine tablets which can play havoc on your kidneys. You might consider one of the hand pump filtration devices which are a little bigger but do a better job.

This is the best thing for outdoor survival since the compass . Ok not the compass, The only down side is that the first few sips come out black because of the carbon. Just be careful not to submerse it all the way in the bad water. Just follow the directions and drink to you hearts content.

I take this camping, hiking, climbing, and fairly any outdoor/traveling adventure.
You can use this even at restaurants if you get tap water. Is really small and will fit inside any pocket of your pack or pants.
I haven't done any lab test to ensure the pureness of the outcoming water but I haven't get seek yet, so... I'm believing on the filter so far...

2.0 out of 5 stars.  BROKEN STRAW, October 26, 2011
By Crusty (Idaho)
I received my Aquamira Frontier Emergency Water Filter System. I opened the package and expanded the straw. I attached it to the filter as per the instructions and the straw split on the end first try. I turned the straw around and attached the other end and it split too. Can't tell you how the filter works yet because of the split straw.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Basic emergency device, February 27, 2012
By Michael A. Duvernois (Minneapolis, MN United States)
Yes, there will be carbon dust in the first few cups of water. It won't hurt you. This is a decent device for emergencies. If I were traveling and planned on routinely (or even occasionally) filtering water I'd get something more elaborate. But I carry this with me in the third world when I DON'T plan on filtering my water. And if I have to use it, I have it with me. Think of it like those cheap car jacks in the trunk of your car. It's a crappy jack, but you'll only use it in an emergency. If you know you're going to use the jack, you buy something better and toss it in the trunk.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Key word here is "emergency", January 22, 2012
By Prepper10
This is light and nicely compact, but one problem is that the filter cannot be inserted into the top of a collapsible water bottle. Worse, there is no easy way to adapt it for a bottle tube/straw. So, be sure the end will fit into the mouth of whatever receptacle you're using. FYI: the "pro" model screws right onto a collapsible bottle, but it is longer and bigger around (too much so for easy pocket carry).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Everyone should have 2, May 11, 2011
By NY Outdoors (NY State)
This is the best thing for outdoor survival since the compass . Ok not the compass, The only down side is that the first few sips come out black because of the carbon. Just be careful not to submerse it all the way in the bad water. Just follow the directions and drink to you hearts content.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  What does this mean?, February 15, 2012
By BJB (NY, NY USA)
I'm curious if anyone knows what this means? "Although the Frontier filter does reduce bacterial and viruses, it is not certified to remove the more than 99.9999 percent of bacteria and 99.99 percent of viruses required by the U.S. EPA water purifier standard. For maximum protection, use the Frontier in conjunction with water treatment drops or water purifier tablets."
Because that basically states that it's useless as a filtration system. Right?

4.0 out of 5 stars.  works. as long as you dont mind drinking carbon. use it for emergencies only., April 22, 2011
By FREEMAN
as much water as i filter through this thing, im still getting cloudy water, but for the price, its worth picking up and taking with you for emergencies. who knows when you wont have time to boil or use iodine? ya know? it weights virtually nothing. pick one up, stow it, and one day you may be very happy you have it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent BOB or SHTF pack addition!, April 18, 2011
By Nick Robinson (WALNUT CREEK, CA, US)
excellent compact item for emergency drinking water needs. 20 Gallons +/- at this size is excellent. Yes, something this size does not filter viruses... however for all practical purposes, a filter is no less a filter for something this size. I have bought 2 already and I am impressed. I will be adding 5 more to my BOB soon.
(Enough to last me until I can get to a permanent solution.)

Haven't used it yet; but it is very compact and light. If it cleans water as well as it packs it will be one of the best pieces of gear yet.

A great thing for a bug-out-bad or get home bag. Nice for hiking or just in case. The but... the life of it is just 20 gallons, really very short and no way to tell if/when the filter is used up.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  awesome, but hopefully i never have to use it, February 2, 2011
By bigreeves1188
Great emergency water filter!! Like I said emergency waterfilter, this is not meant to be used as a prmiary but def fits the role of a secondary or a filter for a get home bag. I have never actually used it but always keep it near by just incase. I was amazed by the size. All in all couldn't ask for more

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great, but use wisely, October 5, 2011
By A. Slania (Ohio)
I carry one in the field while camping or hunting just in case. I would never use a filter like this alone in stagnant water or puddles to avoid the nasty micro critters. If you must use water sources that you are uncertain of the micro environment, always boil first. In a survival situation this is one tool of many, have a small chemical fuel folding camping stove stove and tin cup($12)for boiling. Don't forget a reliable fire source!!! Remember spending a few minutes on preperation can save you weeks, months, or YEARS from intense pain caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasitic organisms.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Frontier Drinking Straw!!, October 4, 2011
By 256 fletcher
I got the Frontier Water Filter System(drinking straw) about 2 weeks ago. I have not used it yet but hoping to go backpacking and try it out soon. When I first opened it and stuck the wrong end in the filter system and split the straw in the first little chamber But its not too big nothing I cant work with, so make sure you know with end to put in the filter. But other than that its very light weight and takes up no room in my pack and a great addition to my gear. I read that your first taste is carbon flavored. But if you read on the back of the packaging it will tell you how to get rid of the taste so overall I looking having this system around just in case.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Needs a tougher straw, September 30, 2011
By A. Peltier
Seems to work really well except the straw part is junk. I bought 3 of these and the first one was fine, but the other 2 straws cracked during their first use (tried all 3 the day I got them). Hard to suck up water with a cracked straw letting air in. If the straw were made of a more flexible plastic that was less prone to cracking (I don't have them upside down either) these would be really fantastic. I'm off to find replacement straws. Don't expect the 3rd to last much longer. Bummer really as they do seem to work well otherwise.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great, November 17, 2011
By Alex
Use it in the white mountains. Even in puddles, it tastes reasonable. For me, it's just a backup (or for fun) if my real purification stuff runs out--it's a relatively porous filter, so it wouldn't be terribly reliable for long-term exclusive usage.

By Prepper10
This is nicely compact, but one problem is that the filter cannot be inserted into the top of a collapsible water bottle. Worse, there is not easy way to adapt it for a bottle tube/straw. The "pro" model is supposed to screw right onto a bottle, but reports are that it will leak if your bottle is collapsible. Kind of misses the point of carrying a really small filter if you can't use it with a collapsible canteen. Still, it's small and "relatively" inexpensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Spit on the first date, January 10, 2012

I've used several of these straws for drinking creek water on outings. They works beautifully. But, you will have a bit of a charcoal taste for the first few straw fulls and you'll wanna spit it out. After that you just have good clean water.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  must have!, December 19, 2011
By technobandit (spokane, wa use)
simple, easy 2 use, straw is lacking quality as others mention. straw doesnt seal really tight so some superglue or duck tape will help. don't expect lots of water to rush into your mouth but does the job. i also bought PolorPure iodine purifer but it takes 20min plus and u have to have ur own bottle. so i RECOMMEND this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for short-term, May 10, 2012
By doomsday 2012 (netherland)
This item is good for short term only. Don't purchase if you are looking for a long term filter. This is good to have if you are on a hike or a 2 or 3 day camping trip. I purchased my filter along with "Aquamira Chloride Dioxide Water Treatment Drops". You can't rely on using just a filter like this to protect you from all bad bacterias. The only advise I can give is, do some research before using or buying anything to help decontaminate your drinking water supply.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  for survival use only, May 9, 2012

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Added to the BAG!, May 4, 2012
By wantedaol
20 Gallons of water for $10.

This filter weighs next to nothing and takes up almost no space.

If you are the type of person that wants to have several ways to produce consumable water on your hiking trip or for your bug out bag, look no further. I would certainly recommend using a larger/heavier pump filter for th majority of your water needs but if you need it in a pinch, there is no reason you shouldn't have access to an extra 20 gallons of water for 1 oz of weight in your bag.

I keep mine in an inner pouch of my bag with a firesteel and I'll likely get another in the near future to keep in my food pouch.

I was looking for a small, portable filter for 72-hour kits I am putting together for my family. This seemed the perfect fit. I plan on using it with another water purification method if the need arises. I received the order quickly and accurately. There hasn't been a need for use yet, but I am glad we will now be prepared and have it when needed.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  OK Product, February 1, 2012
By Scott Stevens (Afton, NY)
I have not used this item yet but purchase it for an emergency back up survival item to take backpacking or store in a mini, portable survival kit (in case my main filter unit ever fails). Seems like a decent product and at only 1.5 oz it it is nice for hiking and backpacking. The straw that comes with it is kind of cheap and a $11 price tag for a 20 gallon filter is a little high.
