as advertised, October 11, 2008
By R. Smith (Los Angeles CA)
|
|
This product is straight forward easy to install as advertised. My roof rails are foolishly body colored rather than something more wear forgiving. The soft rubber mounts allow for tight installation and full removal with no marks left or paint abrasion.
The weight gives you confidence that it'll take the load. This sucker is solid.
If I had one gripe it would be that the gear for tightening/loosening requires too many turns.
If I needed a second set, I would not hesitate to buy another set.

Quality Product that Does the Job, October 27, 2009
By vucats54 (North Wales, PA United States)
|
|
Thule products are of very good quality and this is no exception. It works as advertised. The only slight issue I had is that the straps that wrap around the existing rack are seemingly not long enough to wrap around thicker roof rack bars (like my Pathfinder). I was able to get it to work however by sliding the cross bar out of the attaching feet, extending the straps as far as they would possibly go, installing the feet and then sliding the cross bar back through. Also, without any roof carrier attached, the bars do cause some wind noise at higher speeds.

Installed in less than 10 minutes, August 19, 2009

I got this for my 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander. It installed in less than 10 minutes. Very secure on vehicle. I was pulling with all my strength, the vehicle was rocking back and forth, and these bars did not move at all. Great product, includes locks for all 4 feet.

Couldn't ask for an easier install, May 30, 2010
By K. Merritt (Cypress, TX United States)

We are about to take the family on our summer vacation and our family of four, including two little kids, can no longer fit all of our luggage into tha small cargo hold of our Subaru Forester. We opted to buy these rails along with a waterproof luggage bag to mount to the roof. There is not much to say about these rails other than that, as other reviewers have pointed out, they are exactly what they say they are: sturday, durable rails that adapt easily to most vehicle's existing cross bars. i installed them in under 20 minutes, which would easily have been 10 if I hadn't stopped to make a few spacing adjustments along the way. I am not sure if I will ever understand why these rails (not just these in particular, but all of them in general) cost so much, even at Amazon's competitive price, but I will say that they are well engineered and built, which makes absorbing the cost much easier. We are very happy with the purchase and foresee staying that way. Thanks, Thule and Amazon.

Solid product, just like 450 system, October 28, 2008
By D. H Mark (Chicago, IL USA)
|
|
This is typical solid Thule system. The pictures of this product differ from the actual product-- notice that the picture shows the towers inserting into a slot on the bottom of the cross bar. What you actually get is different-- it is actually identical to the Thule 450 system where the cross bar inserts through a square hollow shaft in the tower. so you are actually getting the equivalent of the 450 towers, cross bars and locks, at somewhat of a discount from those parts priced separately.
System seems nice for putting on and taking off relatively easily, as for the most part I do not want to keep cross bars on car very much (just extended vacations and weekends).

Amazing Quality, June 26, 2010
By John Lessnau (Michigan)
|
|
I just installed these on my Mercedes GL 450 so I can carry a rooftop cargo container on a camping trip this week. Installation was super easy, and I must say they look great and they drip of quality. I will be in no hurry to take them off after our trip since they fit right into the look of my SUV. If you just have rails on top of your car or SUV and need crossbars, have no fear and get these as you will not be disappointed.

ALL WE EXPECTED IT WOULD BE..., January 10, 2010
By Richard A. Sloat
|
|
THE THULE ROOF RACK WAS ALL WE EXPECTED IT WOULD BE, AND WAS SHIPPED INTACT AND READY TO USE. WE WERE WARNED THAT IF IT WAS A GIFT, WE MIGHT HAVE TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR IT, SINCE THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOX DISCLOSED EXACTLY WHAT WAS INSIDE. THE WARNING WORKED FOR US, BUT MIGHT NOT HAVE FOR EVERYONE--I THEREFORE SUGGEST AN OPTION WHICH WOULD OFFER A BLANK BOX!

Whistles like crazy, June 29, 2011
By breathe (Gig Harbor, WA 98335)
|
|
Bought 450 crossroad and 58" bars for my 2005 BMW X5. Fit well but many turns of the hex nut wrench (supplied) to get the bases attached to my factory roof rails.
It was all snug and strong enough once secured.
But when driving even moderate speeds loud whistling emanated from the rails.
At highway speeds it was not easy to tolerate.
Any cross wind added to the loud high pitched whistling.
Perhaps the Thule wind faring may have helped but I will try the aero or round bars to see if they are any better.
Pros: strong, secure, removable
Cons: insane whistling noise, alot of turning the wrench to install or remove, need locks as the wrench is part of each base.

Warning - Thule Fit Guide Is NOT Correct, February 18, 2011
By D. Kirsch
|
|
I have no issue with the product itself as it seems to be great. The issue and WARNING that I have is with Thule itself, and their online fit guide. I used the fit guide to determine which Thule products were required, and then I purchased them here on Amazon. Only after receiving and installing the 45050 did I then learn that it won't work with the Thule Hullavator 897XT.
Specifically, I have a Toyota 2010 Highlander with factory rails (but not crossbars). I needed to install a Thule Hullavator 897XT. The Thule online fit guide has you indicate what make, model and year vehicle you own. And for the Highlander, it even narrows the year selection choices down to 2008-2010 for a specific fit, and that then indicates which base rack is needed to mount the Hullavator 897XT.
According to the Thule online fit guide, I needed to install this 45050 base rack with feet to fit the Hullavator to my Highlander. So I ordered both the 45050 and the Hullavator 897XT here on Amazon. I received the 45050 roof rack first and installed it. The next day I received the Hullavator and was reading over the installation instructions for that and discovered this note tucked away on the instructions indicating that the Thule crossbars must extend "equally between 4" and 8" beyond foot" (meaning beyond the foot of the Thule base rack's foot) and that in "rare instances, longer load bars then those recommended in the Thule fit guide may be required." Apparently anyone owning a Toyota Highlander or anyone else that needs a 50" crossbar on a vehicle with similar roof rack separation distance and wanting to install a Hullavator would be one of those "rare instances." There is no notice inside the fit guide that indicates that the fit guide might not be correct. And of course the 45050 box itself even lists my Highlander as a model to use the 45050, with no note about the need for longer crossbars to use some Thule products. And the Thule product image used here even shows the rack as the crossbar would need to be -- extending beyond the foot.
I filed an online customer service request with Thule who is located in Sweden. They have no U.S. customer service contact information. I have received no reply. So apparently I'm stuck with 50" crossbars that will not work (or the other option is to fully remove the rack that I installed, and ship the entire thing back to Amazon for a refund...the problem being that the rack feet are just fine, installed and I only have incorrect crossbars, and I haven't seen a rack base system that comes with the right size bars -- see below about that).
And the Thule fit guide makes no provision for then trying to determine WHICH crossbars would be the right ones (of course not, because it indicates that what I have are the right ones!). So I had to "guess" my way to that and figured it out by looking at all of the Thule products here and found crossbars that would probably work -- the Thule LB58 crossbars are 58" long and should provide the extra length that is required.
So I caution you when using the Thule fit guide. Amazon has a great price on the Thule products but Amazon customers are completely at the mercy of the Thule fit guide in determining which products to select, and that guide is apparently not always correct.

Great Rack ! ...I know I said 'Great Rack', January 17, 2011
By Oakville Guy

This system was easy to mount (5 mins)and looks beautiful on my Mercedes wagon. The height of these bars off the factory rails is a couple inches, I would have liked a slightly lower stance, but now I'm being picky. I would highly recommend for ease of fitment and aesthetics.

Missing Part, January 2, 2011

Overall I am happy with the product but i was missing one part when it arrived (one of the pains of ordering on line). The one rack end piece used to tighten the straps was missing. I was still able to use it (had to base on timing of a trip) but frustrating as it does not look complete.

Highly recommended: well made and sturdy..except one thing, October 1, 2010
By spinalrx

Purchased my set for a 2010 Toyota Highlander and I was concerned if they were going to fit right. It fit absolutely perfectly with minimal overhang.
It was very simple to install just a strap that inserted into the fitting and you just had to turn an allen wrench that was part of the rack to tighten. Thats it! literally 10 minutes. The only difficult part was when you were putting in the locks you had to really "muscle" them in and try to twist them so they fit. But overall not very difficult at all. I would recommend getting the Fairing for it, because driving over 40 mph creates a whistling and humming sound due to the bar. Others have had the same problem. The fairing usually stops this problem.

These universal racks actually fit. I tried malone and another company with no success. In the end I paid for the best and received what I needed.
Admittedly they do not fit with a lot of extra space, but fit they did!

Easy install, but whistles, August 29, 2010
By isapres (Old Bridge, NJ USA)

I bought these for our 2008 MDX and they work great. Very solid product. I chose these over the OEM crossbars because of complaints about the OEM ones' wind noice. Well, these whistle too, but I can put them on or take them off in less than 5 minutes. (I only need them if we are going on a trip.) The tool-less installation is genious. And the best thing is, we don't have to buy a minivan for lack of cargo space.

Great Alternative To OEM Rails, July 28, 2010
By Paul Rodrigues
|
|
These is a great alternative to the OEM cross rails which are twice the price, plus they can be moved from one car to another. Just make sure that your side rails are the raised type with a space between the rail itself and the roof of the vehicle. You can take these on and off in 10 minutes. Quality built. Highly recommended.

Thule kayak rack system., October 20, 2009
By otterlynn (Ypsi MI)
|
|
This is a great product when combined with the Hullavator. My only criticisms are these:
1. For the cost of the combo (the rack and the hullavator) they should be offered as one complete unit with at least a bit of a discount if one purchases the units together. I have sent these comments to Thule, but of course, doubt that they want to lose any money.
2. There are locks to secure the rack system on the car, but there are no locks to secure the hullavotor once it is attached to the rack, making it neccessary to purchase a locking system to prevent theft of the hullavator while one is out kayaking.
3. Once combined with the hullavator, the wind noise at car speeds over 40 becomes significant.
On the positive side, the rack is easy to install (shorter persons will need a step ladder as did I) and extremely sturdy.
When combined with the hullavator, it makes loading and unloading one's kayak soooo easy!! There is no other way I could load my kayak with such ease, except to trailer it. (I am female,5'4 and older than 50.)

Good product - little pricey, July 16, 2011
By Barry Bedwell
|
|
As stated in previous reviews, rack does indeed attach quickly and securely. Mounted mine to our 2010 Ford Flex (58" bars) with no problem. Rack does indeed make a lot of noise. I would certainly recommend buying the fairings if you plan to have the rack attached for any length of time. My only negative is the price! Sure it's a good product, but I felt I'd paid an extra 50.00-60.00 bucks for the Thule name. Oh well, guess I could have gone back to Ford dealership for factory rack. That would have made this one look like a steal.

Perfect for My Car, July 3, 2011
By defty7
|
|
I installed these crossbars on my 2006 Subaru Outback and they fit perfectly. I was able to attach both a set of Hull-a-Port Pro Kayak racks and a set of Thule saddles and rollers, so that I could carry two Kayaks. One kayak lies on its side and one on its hull. I measured the kayaks carefully before installing the crossbars and I also had to adjust the racks once I lifted the kayaks onto them. The square Thule crossbars are a lot better than the round Yakima crossbars I used to have on another car because they keep the Kayak racks from rolling. The crossbars come with clear directions and are easy to install. They even come with locks and keys. I'm very satisfied.

Great rack system for Subaru Outback 2011, June 16, 2011
By brown.2179 (USA)

Subaru Outback 2011 has a questionable factory roof rack system with very small spread and aero bars. Wanted to use the Yakima sprocket rockets. 50 inch system fit the factory rails with no problem. Installation literally could not have been simpler. The sprocket rockets fit with no problem. The rear hatch opens all the way. Very happy. Would totally recommend this system to anyone. I uploaded a picture of the final setup if you're interested.

The only issue that I had was understanding the instructions for inserting the locks. But that's a onetime issue and has nothing to do with the actual product. Other than that, installing racks was a breeze. They are solid. I installed on 2011 Subaru Forester.

Another Solid Thule Product, April 25, 2010
By Michael Thacker (Dublin, OH)
|
|
This is another high quality and well designed piece of gear from Thule. Installation was very simple onto my existing 2007 Chevy Tahoe roof rails. I used my cordless drill to speed the installation step of the rubber arms around my factory roof rails, however be sure to use a low torque setting if doing this.
My only criticism as an area to improve is the same as a previous reviewer on the wind noise. These bars are noisy when moving over 40 MPH, however the only crossbars I have to compare these with are factory crossbars that were installed on pervious trucks. This factor knocked off a star. This is not a big issue since I'll only be using these on weekends where needed and vacation in conjunction with the Thule Atlantis XT Cargo Box I also purchased from Amazon. Very happy with this purchase.
Update 8/16/10: Moved rating up to 5 starts because the Thule fairing I added to the install eliminated 95% of the wind noise. Very happy with the purchase and versatility of the load bars, cargo box and the entire system.

Quality product, May 18, 2012
By leeki
|

Delivery was two days early. Package arrived in good shape. Installation was quite easy, it only took me about 30 minutes from unpacking to completion. I had to adjust the front bar because of the wind noise above 50 mph. I had it all the way forward and when I moved it back about 6 inches (still about 30 inches between crossbars) the noise abated substantially. A fairing would probably be a good investment if you were on the highway a good bit to lessen the wind noise even further. Very heavy duty product and overall quality and my satisfaction are both 5 stars.

First off the shipping was quick and worry free. The product arrived early with no issues. I also want to point out the sizing instructions were a great addition as it took the guessing game completely out of the equation. Thanks to Thule and Amazon. It is a great looking roof rack and i have no concerns about trasnporting two kayaks on this thing. Installations was super easy, only taking about 10 mintues for my 2012 Jeep Patriot. I would definitely reccomend this product if your looking for a roof rack and want to avoid the hassle of going through a dealership.

Generates a lot of wind noise, November 22, 2011
By W. Wong (Anaheim Hills, CA)
|
|
After 6 months of using the Thule 45050, I can say that it has excellent build quality. It is very easy to install and remove on my Honda minivan roof rack. I use it to carry my Thule cargo box. The big negative is the wind noise generated by the crossbars and mounts, even when driving at city limit speeds...louder on the freeways. Also, the end caps on the crossbars tends to slip off, I use black electric tape to keep them in place. Overall, I feel very safe when using the Thule system. It's the Honda roof rack that I worry about, since it is just held in place with screws. Therefore, be careful not to exceed the weigh limit of the racks.

Perfect fit for 2007 Tahoe, September 29, 2011
By JackieTH (United States)

|
I bought a Yakima Skybox 18 and unfortunately my vehicle only comes with factory side rails. I shopped around Yakima and Thule individual crossbar and tower components..always a pain in the you know what..never can tell exactly what you need, then I happened upon this kit. It works perfectly. Quality is outstanding. Price is cheaper than assembling the individual components. The fit is tight and neat to my factory side rails, and the crossbars work perfectly with the Skybox. Zero extra noise. Hasn't budged an inch at 80 mph on South Dakota freeways even against a headwind. Assembly and attaching the kit to the Tahoe took 20 minutes. Not much more to say except don't fiddle around with individual components, just buy this.

Great customer service from Thule!, September 6, 2011
By James R. Wade (Fort Worth, TX)
|
|
I ordered this item for my 2002 Suburban to use with the Thule Hulavator which I also ordered at the same time. The first thing I will say is that these are a very secure fit for my vehicle and installation was not difficult although the instructions don't have a lot of instructional words but have more pictures so little figuring things out was necessary to get it right. Next I will say that the packaging on this product and the Hulavator by Amazon was very poor. The box that contained the Hulivator was badly damaged due to inferior packing material for the weight of the object but fortunately the manufacturer's box was not damaged nor was the product. However, this item (the Thule 45058 CrossRoad Complete Roof Rack System with Load Bars [58-Inch Bars] was shipped in the manufacturer's original box which would have been fine if the ends had been taped up but they were not and the end had been knocked open somewhere along the way and one of the railing feet and one endcap had come off the bar and were no longer in the package. Installation and therefore use is impossible without all four railing feet so I had to wait over a holiday weekend to contact UPS and Amazon and Thule. UPS initiated an inspection which will take some time. I called Thule but with reservations due to reviews I had seen about missing parts. However, the Customer Support I found at the Thule number given on the instruction sheet was the best! They took my infomation and told me they would send the missing parts themselves right away. In addition, the support person on the phone gave me great installation and use counsel with no prompting at all for which I was greatly appreciative. I own a Thule four bike rack for my Suburban and now have the lift assistance and roof mounting for my kayak. The Thule bike rack came with a 1 1/4" adapter so I can mount it on the receiver on the rear of my RV so thanks to their beautiful designs, thoroughness in feature consideration and customer support, I'm almost ready to ride. I highly recommend Thule and especially the Hulavator and Roof Rack systems from them.
