Big city cyclists need big city protection, as would-be thieves aren't intimidated by just any bicycle lock. Enter the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit U-lock, which features an 18mm hardened Max-Performance steel shackle designed to resist bolt cutters and leverage attacks. Ideal for anyone who lives in moderately high crime areas, the New York Fahgettaboutit boasts a maximum 12 ranking on the Kryptonite 1-12 lock comparison system, which ranks the varying levels of security offered by the company's product range. A lock that ranks 1 on the Kryptonite scale might work if you live in the burbs and have a Rottweiler parked next to your bike or motorcycle. However, city dwellers demand extreme protection, which is why the New York Fahgettaboutit is built for serious deterrent security. The U-lock also offers such security-enhancing features as a high-security disc-style cylinder; an oversized, hardened steel sleeve over the crossbar for double security; double deadbolt locking for extensive holding power; and a center keyway that defends against leverage attacks. And as a bonus, the lock comes with three keys, one of which is lighted with a high-intensity bulb that makes it easy to unlock the Fahgettaboutit after dark. Other features include a protective vinyl coating, a sliding dust cover that protects and extends the cylinder life, and dimensions of 3.25 by 6 inches. The Legendary Durability of Kryptonite Locks The first big test for Kryptonite locks came in 1972, when Kryptonite founder Michael Zane directed the Second Avenue Bicycle Shop in New York City to lock a three-speed bicycle to a signpost in Greenwich Village. Although thieves immediately stripped all of the bicycle's removable parts, the bicycle itself remained for 30 days and 30 nights. The Kryptonite lock and the bike frame were still in place, even though the lock had been attacked numerous times. The publicity gave Kryptonite the boost it needed and forever changed the face of bicycle security. Twenty-two years later, Kryptonite returned to the streets of the Big Apple to test its latest innovation, the New York lock. In April 1994, the New York Post laid down the ultimate challenge: Could Kryptonite's New York lock last 48 hours on the toughest streets of New York? In a city where more than 100,000 bikes are stolen each year, Kryptonite and the Post locked a brand new, bright green Univega road bike worth $600 to a parking meter in the East Village--the Bermuda Triangle of New York bicycle thievery. For a full 48 hours, the bike remained locked on the corner of Avenue A and 11th Street. Zane and Neil McDaid, director of product development and design for Kryptonite, watched from around the corner as the bike came under every possible means of assault, stumping thieves at every turn. After 48 hours the bike remained intact except for the gear derailleur, which had been stripped off. The lock showed definite signs of abuse, but it had not failed. The New York lock had met the Post's challenge. Not satisfied with the length of the test, Zane moved the bike to SoHo for another six days and, finally, uptown near the Lincoln Center. Even in these high-theft areas the properly locked bike lasted another three weeks before being pulled off the streets by Zane and McDaid. The Post also ran the New York lock through a battery of street tests using common bike theft tools: a 4-foot bolt cutter, a crowbar, and a hammer. The non-Kryptonite locks cracked in seconds, but all methods failed on the New York lock, even the monstrous bolt cutter, which was rendered useless with large dents in its jaws. About Kryptonite In the early 1970s, Michael Zane was a free-spirited, bearded kid with a VW van and a big idea for a new kind of lock. He traveled thousands of miles showing the unique U-shaped locking device and spreading his passion for bicycle security to bike dealers all around the country and forged lifetime relationships. The company soon expanded its product line to include power sports, hardware, and snow sports security. Through innovative product designs, cutting-edge marketing savvy, legendary customer service, and pure fanaticism for security, Kryptonite grew with a cult-like following. In 2001, the company that was started in a VW van was purchased by industry giant Ingersoll Rand and became a flagship brand in the company's Security Technologies sector. Publications such as Bicycling, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, US News & World Report, and a host of others continued to tout Kryptonite products as the best on the market. The company's dedication to its customers is best represented by its actions during the fall of 2004, when it was discovered that the industry-standard tubular cylinder could be compromised, at times, with a household item. Kryptonite flew into action, created a voluntary lock exchange program, and replaced more than 400,000 locks in 21 countries for free. In essence, the company redesigned the equivalent of nine years worth of new products in just 10 short months. Kryptonite is the only company in the world that offered such a comprehensive plan to customers, taking its "legendary customer service" pledge to new heights.

Best lock out there, good for big cities but heavy as a brick, October 23, 2007
By Lorax (Bay Area, CA)
|
|
I got my bicycle stolen the second time I locked it up in the city with a cable lock only, so I spent many hours researching locks to make sure it wouldn't happen again.
This lock is widely regarded as the most secure lock currently available, and weighs much less than the fahgettaboudit chain locks (which seem to be about equally secure). Mine weighs 4 lbs 6 oz, and to lock the tires I need to also use a 12 oz 4 foot Kryptonite cable lock. So the whole locking system is about 5 lbs, which is a lot.
The most important feature of this lock is the small size, which doesn't allow thieves to get their manual tools like levers or car jacks in to break it. The only known way of breaking this lock is to saw it by hand (at least a half hour of intense effort), or to use a powered angle grinder (probably at least 5 minutes). So most thieves would end up cutting through the frame of the bike if they really wanted it.
There are other small U locks that are also unbreakable except for lots of sawing or power tools, like the Kryptonite Evolution Mini, and the Onguard Mini U lock, but which weigh much less. I almost went with one of these because I hate to carry a lot of weight, and they may be good alternatives to this lock for most people.
I figure the bike theft scene is escalating with the thieves getting more and more sophisticated over time, so even though this is overkill now, it provides me peace of mind that I will be able to keep it for many years without having to worry about it becoming obsolete. And I have the peace of mind knowing that if my bike gets stolen again there was nothing I could have done to prevent it.
Be aware that this lock doesn't come with a mounting bracket, and there is no bracket available for it. I've found the best way to carry it on my bike is to thread it up through the top and side of the rear rack on my bike, but if you don't have a rear rack you'll need to either let it jangle around looped over the handlebars or carry it in a bag or big pocket, which can be uncomfortable.
The locking mechanism is very smooth; it's easy to insert the shackle onto the U, and it's easy to turn the key. This is a welcome improvement over all the cheap U locks I've owned which were fidgety to close.
Update after owning this lock for two years:
I still like it a lot. The weight has bent my rear rack a little so it now nestles just perfectly for rattle free tranport. I spray teflon lube on it every 6 months or so and the locking mechanism is still butter smooth, by far the smoothest U lock I've ever used.
The only annoyance is that the plastic rainguard that covers the keyhole was very flimsy and broke off after just a month or so, leaving sharp mounting rivets that scratched me a few times drawing blood before I got some pliers and pulled them off.
The theft guarantee had too many restrictions to be useful, so I didn't even register.
I also learned a bit more about how to protect the rest of my bicycle after spending three figures replacing a stolen seat and associated components. Search "Pitlocks USA" to find the best system for permanently locking your wheels, seat, and headset to the bike. It's worth the extra cost for the convenience, security, and weight savings of only needing the U lock. And for the other components here's a really cool way to secure them: get ball bearings that will just barely fit inside the allen sockets. Drip some candle wax into the allen sockets, and press the bearing in place before the wax dries. The bearing prevents allen keys from being insertable, and the wax makes it necessary to have a sharp pointy tool (and some time) to get the bearing out, which a thief might not have. This works well for securing brake and shifting systems, racks, handlebars, and crank arms to the bike. I used cable ties around the pedal wrench flats to make it difficult for wrenches to fit. I drilled and drove a screw into the plastic mounting bracket for my LED light and used a cable tie to make it difficult to remove.
With all the components secured to the bike, I no longer need a cable lock, and I can leave the bike on city streets for hours without worrying too much. Bike Security Nirvana!

kryptonite fahgettaboudit Lock anti theft protection, August 26, 2008
By TC (New York City)
|
|
purchased this lock after my bike was stolen, primarily due to $4500 antitheft protection that comes with lock. worth noting that my old bike was stolen while locked up with a heavy duty Krytonite chain lock.
Anyway, received the lock, seems solid enough, but was a disappointed after reading all of the various conditions and qualifications related to the anti theft protection, which basically renders the protection worthless. First of all, they only pay for the deductible for your insurance not for the replacement of your bike, so you need to have insurance in the first place for this to have any value. Secondly, you need to provide so much back up information: bike registration, bike receipt, lock receipt, etc where it makes it very cumbersome process to even apply for the protection in the first place. Then there is the rigourous post theft requirements: report teft to police within 72 hours, mail notice to Kryptonite within 7 days, report to insurance company. most of these aren't too bad, but the one thing that you need to do which is likely not possible is that you have to send them the broken lock. so if the thief just takes the lock, which they did in both instances where I had bikes stolen, you are out of luck. So basically colecting on the anti-theft protection requires that the thief is nice enough to leave the lock behind.
The moral of this story is that Krytonite's anti-theft protection offer is worthless and should not be a consideration in purchasing one of thier locks. as far as their locks being the best and most theft resistant available, not sure this is true given my past experience.

Paid for itself, worth every penny, April 7, 2010
By L4m3r (Los Angeles, CA)
|
|
I've been using this lock for over a year now, and it's worth every penny. I live on a college campus in Los Angeles, and park my bike outside at night. My last bike was stolen when a thief cut right through the $30 U-lock I had. After that experience, I bought the Fahgettaboutit to protect my new bike.
Sure enough, a few months in, someone attempted to steal my bike while I was at work. The thief failed miserably, managing only to cut through the vinyl sheath on the shackle and scratch the paint on the steel. I think that the thief may have even broken his bolt cutters, because he didn't snip the cable that secured my wheels. The jerk did take the time to unbolt and steal my fork, brakes, handlebars, stem, and shifters, but in saving my frame and wheels this lock paid for itself and then some.
After replacing the stolen components, I invested in a Pitlock set to protect my wheels, brakes, and fork. Most of the remaining hex bolts have been filled with solder to discourage theft. With these measures in place alongside my Kryptonite Fahgettaboutit, I have no worries about leaving my ride outside and no one has made a visible attempt to take it.
The lock is heavy, but I'm not a gram-counter, so it doesn't bug me. The main downside is that there is no frame mount for this lock.
It's worth noting that the shackle locks at both ends. In other words, to add insult to injury, a thief would probably have to cut through the shackle twice in order to get the bike out.
The Fahgettaboutit doesn't like to get wet- the mechanism will get stiff if left out in the rain. However, I was able to remedy the problem easily by applying some bearing grease in the pits. This lubricated the locking mechanism and prevented any more water from entering.
If you're even moderately worried about bike theft, then buy this lock. The peace of mind is wonderful.

rated highest protection available, October 6, 2007
By Daniel W. DeLuca (New York, NY)
|
|
I read a detailed evaluation of bike locks from some european magazine, and this one rated highest in difficulty of sheer cracking. They had high-quality power saws and this took something like 10 minutes to saw through. The next highest rated, including the kryptonite chain and the toughest bulldog u-lock, both took 7 or 8 minutes to saw through. These expensive locks are made with higher-grade steel, which is why they're so heavy. And yes, you need a cable or something to protect the wheels, this is just for the frame. If I remember right, this lock weighs between 4 and 5 pounds, and the kryptonite cable and mini lock weighs about 8 pounds.

Kryptonite 5, Amazon 2, July 14, 2009
By J. Albergo
|
|
After losing my bike due to an inadequate cable-lock I read up on bicycle locks and 2 points stood out. 1, The Fahgettaboudit locks were top-rated, and 2, use two types of lock. So I purchased the fahghettaboudit u-lock as well as their 5-foot chain lock. Fortunately, this is for my work location and I can leave the locks at site. You'd have to be pretty stoic to carry both of these locks around with you! I'm satisfied that these are about the best protection I can hope for. Kryptonite seems to have done their homework. Amazon on the other hand... Amazon built their reputation back when they stocked and delivered their own merchandise -- with the highest standard of service. Nowadays they connect buyer and seller. So you are at the mercy of whatever random merchandiser ships your order. My U-lock was shipped flopping around inside a cardboard box with one "bag-o-air". Due to the weight of the item and the fact that it was free to slam around in the box, the plastic weather-guard was destroyed in transit. In the future I will look for a reputable retailer to purchase from, rather than "Amazon the match-maker". I'm tired of these blind dates.

best lock, October 12, 2007
By E. Nguyen (bay area)

this lock is the best u can get. its a tad bit still but the smaller it is, the better it is becacuse there is no leverage for the protential theif. it does weigh a bit but i guess that could be a good thing? think of it as trainning. when your biking around town with extra weight, it will get you stronger for those long trips where you would feel light as a feather without the lock. if you thik the lock is too heavey for you, just leave it at where you usually park, like at work or school. so when you get there it will be ready for you. just buy a cheaper cable lock to carry around because you most likely dont need a superior lock when parking at a coffee shop or the store. quick 30 mins wont get your bike stolen but overnight or 8 hr work hrs will get it stolen, especially if the thief knows that you park there everyday. i recommend this lock if you have an expensive bike or if you life in a high crime rate city. otherwise id buy the onguard bulldog mini. thats a very good lock for its price. perfect lock for moderate to low crime rates or cheap bikes. it only cost about 28 and it comes with a cable.
i recommend buying a cable for this lock because you can put it around your seat and front/rear tires. without the cable, the seat is unprotected(even if the seat uses an allen type screw, allen wrenches are very common) if a thief wants your seat (some cost around 150 not uncluding the carbon fiber seat column) they can just unscrew it. plus the front tire is a hassle to take off and put on .
buy this lock its that good

Strong but not very functional, September 26, 2007
By Fries French (Chicago)
|
|
This lock is super heavy and thick. If I were a thief, I'd definitely look elsewhere for an easier lock to break. However, it is very short lengthwise--good for security but not very functional in a city like downtown Chicago where I have to get creative when selecting a location to lock my bike. And its weight is very heavy in my opinion. If you're used to carrying a chain, this probably wouldn't bother you. Then again, if you're using a chain, you probably wouldn't buy this lock. I have a bit of buyer's remorse and am considering selling this.

One Tough Lock (get two U-locks - one for each wheel), June 25, 2008
By W. Lee (Sydney, New South Wales, Australia)
|
|
IT IS HEAVY, BUT SOLID
When I first got this bike lock, I thought oh my goodness this is heavy. It is heavy but I have not found it heavy when riding for transport and commuting purposes. I feel it would be tough to cut through or to pick the lock.
It is heavy, so perhaps see if you can try weighing one up in your hand in a shop, before purchasing?
MUST USE CORRECT BIKE LOCKING TECHNIQUE
You MUST use correct bicycle locking technique or else I feel you will find this lock of no use to you. It is simply not long enough. If you don' t use correct locking technique you will be disappointed, I feel.
Once you use correct locking technique, any thief will find it difficult to put a crowbar or other tool in the empty space (within the 'D' shape), because there is very little room there. To give you some idea of how little room there is: even if my pedal has swung around to be between my bike and the pole, I cannot use this lock - it is not long enough to fit around the additional length - I have to swing the pedal around so that it is not there and then move my bike closer to the pole in order to be able to close the lock together.
To find out what correct locking technique is - search for "proper bicycle locking technique" or "correct bicycle locking technique" on the internet. Basically it involves putting the U-lock through the back wheel through the back triangle of the bike frame.
I read another reviewer write that you have to get creative to use this lock - you don't have to do this - you just have to use proper bike locking technique.
DO NOT USE CABLE LOCKS
I am not using cable locks any longer - do not use these - the thief that stole my bike wheels had time to cut my cable twice, but could not cut my u-lock and therefore did not steal the frame.
When you weigh up the purchase price of a lock, you need to factor in the hassle and time it would take to purchase a new bike or new bicycle wheels if they are stolen. Not only is there the replacement cost, there is the cost of having to choose one and move the remaining pieces away (by car/taxi), waiting for it to come in, etc.
SHORT LOCK
This lock will not go around the wheel and the frame and the pole. It will only go around the wheel and then the pole you are attaching it to. This is OK however if you are using correct bicycle technique. Using this technique with this lock also seems to prevent your bicycle from falling down when attached to a pole - how many of you have seen a bicycle on an angle or nearly on the ground because it is tied up loosely to a pole.
GET TWO U-LOCKS
Get another one to use for your front wheel to lock this - so have 2 in total. Otherwise they may steal the front wheel. It will not fit around the front wheel and the frame - but instead it fits around the wheel and the suspension bar thing (sorry don't know the name) just on top of the front wheel.
It is very thick and solid. I am impressed with it, but you must use correct locking technique.

I know this is silly, September 21, 2007

I guess my review is biased, but I didn't realize that the lock weighed a trillion pounds and that a chain lock is actually lghter than this beast. It is also not long enough to fit around my front tire, frame and a pole. So $80 is a little hefty. On the other hand, no one is gonna break this sucka.

TOUGH, WORKS WITH MASERLOCK MOUNT, SMALL, August 24, 2010
By Bugman (Lewes, DE United States)
|
|
First impression : "This thing is HUGE, HEAVY, how am I ever going to mount this on my bike?"
Well, you CAN mount it. Use the Master Lock 8351D Smart Bracket. It works like a charm. You'll pay $4 on Amazon to buy the bracket. When you get it, take out the two screws from the shackle portion of the mount and throw them away. Then go to the hardware store and pay $1 for two M4 30mm bolts. If you use those to mount the hardware on the shackle, it works great. See my pictures, and more info on my review of the Master Lock 8351D Smart Bracket.
The lock itself is heavily reviewed on the web - no need for me to repeat that here. BUT seriously consider WHAT you are going to lock your bike to. You cannot use this on a lamp post, and I have great doubts about whether it will work on a parking meter -- the lock is just too small.
Check my uploaded images and you'll see the dimensions. I lock it to a very strong street sign at work, but it's a tight fit. You may want to measure your "fixed device" and bike frame and do the math before getting this, and make sure it will fit for you.
If I get to try this with a parking meter I'll update my review.
Highly recommended - but make sure to buy the mount, and check the size issue before you buy.
Well, 1 year later I still have not had occasion to lock this to a parking meter - but I seriously doubt it will work. The parking meters here are just too thick for this to get around. I always pick a secure street sign at my workplace, and the few other places where I regularly ride. This just snugly fits around the post on standard street signs. Please research that issue carefully before you buy - make sure you can verify that it can get around whatever you need at your workplace or park -- it is a SMALL U-lock, but a great one.
By the way, my mount setup [Master Lock 8351D Smart Bracket.] still is working without a hitch - that is definitely the way to go! slides right on the bike, and has never fallen off.

Heavy lock is heavy., December 14, 2008
By Greg (California)
|
|
Had this sucker for about a month now, and the first thing I noticed is that it's pretty big for the mini u-lock family. Big and heavy. Being Kryptonite's highest security lock, this is expected. For my needs in Safe-Towne Suburbia, this lock is a little too much. I really don't need something this hardcore. But for it's intended purpose, it's excellent.
Pros:
It's secure and I don't feel bad locking it outside for extended periods of time.
It's incredibly solid and for every-day use, entirely indestructible.
Rubber coating prevents it from scratching and denting things.
Cons:
It's heavy. If you're one of those who stick their u-locks in their belt or back pocket, don't be surprised when it pulls your pants off. Just make sure your pants are well secured.
The keys, like many of the Kryptonites I've used, sometimes won't go in all the way or get stuck. A little wiggling goes a long way.
As robust as the lock is, after dropping it a few times, the black plastic cover that surrounds the key-hole cracked where the screws hold it in place. This is a pretty minor flaw, and doesn't affect the performance, but it would be nice if it was a bit more robust.

Locktacular, March 8, 2007
By John Anderson (Illinois)

I live on a large college campus and have had my bikes stolen before, but with this lock I haven't had anyone even try to steal it. It's not as heavy as I thought it would be (a plus) and it is pretty small so it can fit in just about any larger pocket. It feels solid and looks strong too. I would definitely buy this lock again if ever need be.

Hardcore, but finicky and not rustproof, December 23, 2008
By BCL
|
|
I love the lock and it IS the most hardcore one on the market. Two things to be aware of though:
1 - the disc style mechanism can be a little touchy and my friend's kryptonite stopped accepting its key. I'm sure it's a key issue and not a lock issue though and if he had registered his keys there would have been no problem. (so register).
2 - Another friend left his nice road bike locked with a NY lock over a long time while he was travelling. He came back and the bike was still there but the lock was so rusted that it was impossible for the key to unlock it from the frame/post. Bolt cutters, saws, prybars, etc couldn't either. Suffice it to say the frame remains there to this day. (So keep it dry if storing for a long time).
Good luck!

Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit U-Bolt, March 18, 2008
By Stewart Wilkins
|
|
Superb U-Bolt. This is ideal for high risk environments (mainly big cities). Though it is rather short compared to other U-Bolts, this one will ensure that your bike will not move (so long as it was attached to an anchored object). This is the toughest U-Bolt out there. To compensate for shortness, I use this in conjunction with a standard security cable to lock the tires. Be advised that increased security comes with added weight, as this lock weights 4.6 lbs. Other than that I would highly recommend this product to anyone with a bike (overkill is definitely better than a stolen bike).

Bulky but worth it, December 7, 2007
By history doctoral student
|
|
The lock is heavy, yes, but totally worth it. It is a lot brawnier than other locks around my college campus, which are mostly chain locks or less sturdy looking u-locks. I use it on combination with a factory rear-wheel lock on my Dutch bike and feel completely confident leaving my bike just about anywhere. Sometimes the smaller size requires some creativity in terms of where you park your bike, but I've found this lock fits pretty snug around parking meter posts. I think this lock is totally worth the weight and the cost if you've got a nice bike that you don't want stolen.

this has pros and cons
pros: i dont think anyone will have time to cut through it before you come back to it later in the day
its name is fahgettabout it so maybe thieves identify it or know to forget about it
its a key lock instead of combination with 2 keys that light up(not that you need the light)
cons: it is HEAVY AS HELL. i seriously think this weighs 1/2 or 1/3 the weight of my bike alone. i think my bike is aluminum or some light weight material
it rusts on the 2 bar parts so sometimes its hard to lock in or unlock
attaching to your bike makes it hard to carry up stairs
the U part is pretty small. you need to put your bike very close to what you are attaching it to so it fits all the way around
it is just too bad to attach to your bike so i just hold it while holding on to the handlebars
one good thing is that ive had 2 bikes stolen at my school using cable combo locks so i said $(@@ this im gonna spend a lot to make sure i keep my next bike. so first day of school(Stony brook university is a school of thieves i swear) my bike is fine but they took my nice seat. at least it shows they gave up on the rest and took the only thing they could. now i know to use a cheap seat or take the seat with me...
hello i am editing my review after owning it for about 2 months
this seems like a good lock and wont get your bike stolen,
BUT IF YOU LIVE IN A COLD WEATHER AREA........DO NOT BUY THIS
i live in new york and it is winter right now. i keep my bike outside and use this lock on it. the water in the morning goes all over the lock, drips down into the locking mechanism and freezes it. it is pretty much impossible for me to take it off my bike until the spring now unless i get a torch or saw it off my bike.

Preferable to the fahgettaboutit chain, May 1, 2009
By SuperElectric
|
|
At first, I got a chain, thinking that it could lock the front wheel and the frame, unlike a U-lock. A better solution turned out to be to get a U-lock, and use locking security pins to keep your components from walking away. I got a 4-pack of security skewers from Pinhead Components. These are like hex screws, except they can only be removed with a custom key that comes with the pin set. They replace the hex screws and quick-release pins that keep your front fork, wheels, and seat post attached to your bike. A chain by contrast won't protect your front fork and seatpost, and you'd have to get a rather long one if you wanted to protect both wheels. The U-lock + pin solution turned out to less heavy, and much simpler to lock/unlock to external objects.

Good but rusted, November 17, 2008
By B. Waddington (Rochester NY)
|
|
A friend of mine and I bought our own versions of this lock at about the same time, and within a week of locking them outside every night both locks have rusted to the point where you have to expend a good deal of force just to get them out.
On the other hand no one has stolen my bike since I got this whereas that just simply isn't the case for some people I know who bought cheaper locks

this thing is a beast!, March 7, 2011
By Steven
|
|
This lock is a beast. Its damn heavy (package says 5lbs).. i haven't gotten a chance to use it yet but it looks like it will definitely do its job. I would suggest this lock to someone who leaves there bicycle for an extended period of time. If you are a "in and out" type of person i would go with a lighter lock. I mean I'm kinda dreading riding with it. to add 5lbs to a 18-20lbs bike is pretty big..
The lock construction looks good. Nothing cheap about it. strong and sturdy. It does raddle a little but I'm not worried. If you were wondering about being able to break into it with a pen (youtube it) it has been corrected. I tried as soon as i received it. The key hole has been reduced so a pen wouldn't even fit into it. Also if you were interested in the coverage Kryptonite will provide, fahgettaboutit... too many restrictions. Its funny to me that the lock that is called the NEW YORK lock isn't even covered in New York.

IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR BIKE, August 19, 2007
By CHOCOBO BIKING1111 (CALIFORNIA)

I CARE A LOT ABOUT MY "CHOCOBO" AND I GET HER THE BEST, THIS LOCK IS THE BEST U-LOCK IN THE MARKET. IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR BIKE, GET THIS LOCK DON'T LET THE PRICE HESITATE YOU, IT'S WELL WORTH YOUR BELOVED BIKE AND AT THE BEST PRICE AND SERVICE.
NOTE:LOCK IS SMALL AND EVEN FOR MY SKINNY TRACK BIKE, THE LOCK DOESN'T ALWAYS LOCK WITH THE FRAME AND REAR WHEEL SO INVEST IN A CABLE OR CHAIN THAT SUITS YOU.
TRULY, SOMEONE WHO LOVES THEIR BIKE "CHOCOBO" ALMOST AS MUCH AS THEIR WIFE AND BABY BOY!

Small - heavy - heavy - heavy, October 2, 2007
By Fred K (Brooklyn, USA)
|
|
Be aware it just barely fits around the new New York City meter posts.
The lock looks fierce however... that is for sure.
Overall this lock is pretty useless. The width is actually less than the Kryptonite mini. My suggestion if you are going to keep this lock is to strip off the rubber and replace it with a layer of electrical tape, you will gain an extra 1/4 inch which will make it fit better.
You cannot lock the wheels with it (unless you have a very close coupled track bike without aero wheels), so it is really just for show if you are parking in a really awful place, you will still have to carry a couple of minis or a chain to lock the wheels. Most users would be much more happy with the NYC 3000.
I guess like the other reviewer I have buyers remorse, but I kind of knew what I was buying. I will keep it around.

Not perfect but at least I still have a bike, June 26, 2011
By Megan Thruston
|
|
As a resident of a city with one of the highest per capita bike theft rates in the USA, I knew that when I got my new bicycle I would have to get a very good lock, especially since I don't have enough space to bring the bike in at night. Enter the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit Mini.
My first impression of the Fahgettaboutit was that it's HEAVY. This is obviously a byproduct of the lock's thick steel construction, which is a good thing since it makes it more or less impervious to bolt cutters, but if you're looking for a lock you can toss in your backpack and carry around town this isn't it.
My second impression was that its small size makes locking a bike to racks or objects that aren't perfectly lined up with the frame very difficult, especially if the bike has a step-through frame like mine. However, this issue is also a byproduct of an intentional design feature, namely preventing thieves from being able to pry the lock off with a crowbar. After about 6 months of using this lock I became quite proficient at maneuvering my bike into a position that works with the lock, so it's not really a big deal anymore.
In terms of build quality, the core components of the lock seem quite solid and well-made. As I mentioned before, the steel is VERY thick and I'd imagine it would take a thief quite a while to saw through one of the bars. The plastic face plate, on the other hand, was complete rubbish and fell off within the first few months, leaving the lock mechanism unprotected.
Rust has also been an ongoing issue with this lock - within the first month and a half of use it became so rusty that it was almost unusable. Thankfully a little WD-40 goes a long way, but for $50 I would hope for better weatherproofing.
Those issues aside, my bike has survived over a year outside without being stolen so it's clear this lock does what it's supposed to do. For that reason alone, I have to give the Faggettaboutit Mini 4 stars.

This is one beefy bad-boy! I feel pretty safe leaving my expensive road bike with this lock but it is a bit smaller than I initially suspected and I can't get the back wheel and the frame. It's a tank - really heavy, which is good. But it's too narrow. Couldn't get it around the frame, the rear wheel and an anchored object, which is a nuisance. Will definitely protect your frame, if that's all you're getting it for.

This lock may be a little heavy but it's your choice, lock it or loose it. Also it is good peace of mind as well. I use this in combination with (8351D
Master Lock Smart Bracket for Bike Locks to mount the lock to my bike) and Kryptonite 2018 Hardwire Key Cable to loupe through both wheels, the frame and the lock. The 2018 Hardwire I carry looped three times (fasten together with its velcro) and put it in my backpack. Securing your bike is a must, it only takes one time and you will learn. This is the best combination on the market! I research everything I buy, I only buy once.

Heavy/Secure Lock, March 12, 2011
By CT/RAD DUDE (PFLUGERVILLE,TEXAS)
|
|
I now understand why this lock is rated so high in the "Theft Deterent" catagory... it is the heaviest/strongest U-Lock I have ever owned. The opening in the "U" is large enough to fit well around most bike frames and stationary posts. I attached it to the luggage carrier on the back of my bike, so transport is easy. The primary key has a built-in LED, which is excellent for low-light conditions. I bought this lock with a nice cable (package deal) in hopes of keeping the bike AND wheels from potential thieves (or at least make their job a little tougher). Again, this is an impressive lock; I strongly recommend it to anyone who values the bike you ride. One additional note: registering your bike with local law enforcement agencies and your insurance company will help in the recovery/claim process if you become a "statistic". GJM

Good - but can't fit around some objects, August 3, 2010
By new biker
|
|
Good reason to buy it: It's strong and the small size makes it harder for a thief to break. Bad news: It won't fit around some of the objects on sidewalks you might want to lock your bike too. You might have to find a street sign or something else if it won't fit around some bike racks if their poles are really thick.

Great Lock, December 28, 2008
By Mark (Sandiego)

The sense of security accompanying this five pound lock is probably the best thing about it. It's built solidly and has a reputation for being one of the best. Comes with three keys, one of which has a useful blue LED built in for unlocking at night. Kryptonite will also replace your keys if lost after registering them online. Great lock, would've rated it five stars if it weren't so expensive!

a little too small, July 18, 2011
By mdelre2
|
|
I don't doubt the security on this thing however, its a little too "mini" than the mini, i had imagined. Had it of been a little wider than i think it would have been perfect. if your going this route and getting the mini, it will most likely only lock your frame and not the the frame + wheel. I had to "downgrade" and get the Kryptonite New York Standard Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket ( 4-Inch x 8-Inch). If you're going this route please get the security cables that'll get your wheels in place too. dont just use this lock and expect for your tires to be intact, especially in high crime areas.

This lock is heavy and small. Definitely want to consider where you will lock it. Very secure and I fell comfortable that our bikes will be there. The $40 kryptonite i had was breached and it sucks when your bike is gone. I threw a full set of pit locks on our bikes and believe I did all I can do. Heavy but great.

Good lock but ..., March 16, 2011
By Bornean (Perth, Australia)

|
I have just started locking my bike with this and feel my bike is safer. Be aware that it doesn't come with a bracket so you either keep it in your bag or secure it on your rack. Not that this matters to me.
There's supposed to be a sliding cover on the key hole, supposedly to keep the inside of the lock dust (and water?) free. When my lock came, the sliding cover was broken, but I didn't know what it was for. But without it, I doubt the lock performance will suffer, but still ...

Solid Brick, February 27, 2011
By Blake (Portland, OR)
|
|
If you plan on transporting this thing around don't plan on putting it in your bag and riding off. This thing weights a TON. If your going to have to lug this heap of bricks around make sure you can latch it to your bike somehow. I tried putting it in my TimBuk2 bag and by the end of a 5 mile bike ride I felt like my body was going to break in half from my shoulder strap down. On the other hand, if your trying to keep your bike safe, this is the lock for you! =D
Buy it! Latch it to your bike - Don't put it in a bag.
Great product! Keys work well inside the keyhole.

This thing in one word "Beast". Its a very heavy lock. I wouldn't imagine trying to cut this thing off in a public place w/o attracting a ton of attention.
Two Cons for this lock is it doesn't come with a mount and its very heavy. (About 5 lbs) On the upside there is a guide on [...] to make a mount for this lock for about $5 and it very easy to do.

Fantastic security!, September 8, 2010
By Everyday Cyclist
|
|
This lock is truly incredible. The security can't be beat. The double-locking mechanism means a thief has to cut BOTH sides of the shackle for it to release what it's securing. Massive and heavy describes this beast. I commute with it on a rack but can where many riders don't want something this heavy on their bike. One alternative is to leave it locked where you'll need it (check w/ property owner/mgmgt. first!). That makes for a lighter ride and top-notch security at your destination.
It's a small lock, so it won't secure your bike to everything. A standard parking meter-size pole is ideal. You can get two road wheels through the rear triangle to secure frame & wheels, but it's a tight fit. Most people will use a cable to secure the wheel(s) and just get the frame.
I've sold lots of locks at the LBS and own several Kryptonites, standards & minis, locks and chains and this is the most impressive u-lock I've seen to date. Good job Kryptonite for setting the standard on ultra-high bicycle security!

Impossible to break, July 30, 2010
By C. Joo Kee (Singapore)
|
|
This lock is so thick that I would say its impossible to crack without using powertool. Really solid for securing bicycle. I own the Kryptonite New York LS Bicycle U-Lock ( 4-Inch x 10.25-Inch) too. That is a lock that I already deem close to impossible to crack given its 16mm shackle. The best part of that lock is the long shackle. But this 18mm is even better!
Conclusion: If you need the absolute security to secure just bike frame to a stationary object, get this. Else, if you need to secure frame & wheel or to an object larger, get the Kryptonite New York LS Bicycle U-Lock ( 4-Inch x 10.25-Inch). Both are very good lock.

I feel pretty good about my bike being there when I get back. (NYC), September 2, 2009
By TB (NYC)

After long debate between the Bulldog and the Fahgettaboutit Mini, I went with the Kryptonite. I just feel like if I would have went with the cheaper and weaker Bulldog, it would have been enough but I would have always worried that my bike wouldn't be there when I got back. So I spent the $40 extra dollars to ease my neurotic mind and I'm really glad I did. I don't worry. It's heavy of course but I don't even notice it because I lock it around the frame while riding so I don't have to carry it in my messenger bag. Works great. And I gotta say I love the size. It's just big enough to where I can lock it thru the frame and back tire to most signs and polls without excess room for shenanigans.

Awesome strength "outweighs" it's negatives., May 28, 2009
By Justin A. Harding (Madison, WI)
|
|
This lock feels incredible. Just it's appearance would be certain to scare off most would-be thieves. I appreciate it's slightly smaller size as a deterrant against leverage attacks. Having to look a little harder for a place to lock it is an acceptable tradeoff. It is definitely heavy, but worth the weight in my opinion. You are not going to carry this thing in a race anyway, right? I had to send my first one back as it arrived with the key dust/dirt guard broken off during shipment. It must have been slammed pretty hard as the replacement seems tough enough. It is locked up right now outside and I have no worries at all that my bike will be there when I return.

This lock is approximately 4.6 pounds but I couldn't be happier. Although it's a little heavy, it's size is relatively small. I own a $1300 road bike and I want to keep it. Besides,I can store the lock on the frame easily when I'm riding. I understand that the insurance coverage is crap because of all the specifics, but I have complete faith that nothing will cut through this thing. If you value safety and wouldnt mind carrying the extra weight, this lock is the way to go.

THE BEST MONEY CAN BUY, August 28, 2011
By Raymond T.
|
|
This is as good as it gets. "The King" of bicycle U-locks.
I had my bike stolen from right outside my window while locked up with a BELL U-lock. That's when I realized that it was extremely foolish on my part to try to save 40 insignificant dollars on a cheap lock. That $40 I saved ultimately cost me $800.
My take on all the common complaints....
1. MOUNTING BRACKET: No, it doesn't have a bracket, but I don't need one. I just conveniently lock it to my frame. You should, too. (check the customer's uploaded image gallery to see a pic)
2. LOCK SEIZING FROM RUST: Like most things made of steal, it can rust and seize up if it gets wet. Nothing a little WD40 and motor oil won't fix. C'mon guys. It's just like your bike chain. I guess common sense escapes us sometimes.
3. WEIGHT: Seriously, people? You're complaining about it being to heavy at five pounds? Men, hang your head in shame if this is you. Ladies, you'll carry around 10 pounds of crap in your purse, but this is to heavy?
Ok! Now for the review!
This lock is a beast. It gives me 100% confidence that my bike will be there when I get back, every time. The other bike locks on the rack look like a joke in comparison. I did A LOT of net surfing research and I haven't found a pic or a video of this lock being compromised yet, nor have I heard of a single locksmith that was able to pick one. What else really needs to be said?
Don't be cheap. Protect your investment. Get this lock.

Great Lock, August 15, 2011
By LJC
|
|
I bought this lock to secure my bike on a university campus, and I can assure you that after you handle this lock for a minute or two, you will not worry about your bike getting stolen. Yes, it's heavy, but it's not nearly as heavy as my bike is valuable to me. To secure it to my bike, I bought some velcro straps that you can bind electrical cords with, and velcro the lock to my bike rack. Haven't had a problem yet. Since the lock can't really go through more than two objects (frame/wheel, frame/post, wheel/post), I run it through the frame and the post I'm locking it to and thread a Kryptonite cable through the front and rear wheels. I've been handling the lock for a few months now, and I have no idea what people are talking about when they say the lock seizes on them. The mechanism feels sturdy and usable.

Weight VS Security, August 13, 2011
By in0va3
|
|
Having used this lock several times, the major concern I had with it was the weight. Weighing 5 lbs, this lock was really not what I would prefer and is uncomfortable when I had to leave it in my backpack when biking. But for people that is fine carrying a heavy lock because there are no mounting solutions for this lock then they should be good as this lock also provides maximum security on a U-Lock that Kryptonite offers. I actually thought I would be needing this level of security but after a few uses it turns out that it is way too heavy for me even though its tough. So I advice customers to think about the balance between weight and security since a heavier lock means a tougher lock. I wouldn't say that I don't need this kind of security since it offers me a peace of mind when it comes to locking my bike and no security is highest if there are no guarantee my bike is 100% safe from thieves but it's just too inconvenient. That's why I chose a different lock: New York 3000 Cycle Lock It doesn't seem that bad in toughness since it is rated 11/12 by Kryptonite and has a 16mm shackle while the Fahgettaboudit has an 18mm shackle. It would seem to be a step down from the 18mm. The Kryptonite 3000 aka STD (Standard) is supposedly larger and lighter (by a little) while providing me enough security in the city of New York. The New York Lock STD also comes with a mounting bracket to mount on the bike when not in use which should also provide more convenience when it comes to traveling with it without lugging onto the weigh of the heavier Fahgettaboudit. I'm not sure if the STD is better though based on the reviews it seems bashed at so once I receive it I will compare the two U-Locks.
To sum it up, what I dislike about the Fahgettaboudit are:
- Too heavy (for me that is, may be different for everyone)
- No mounting solutions
- Bottom plastic cover is flimsy and cracks
But since a lock is mainly for security, you might think differently. This lock IS the best in what it does, locking your bike. While I would take the weight into account.

This lock is really, really fat. This is the top of the line lock so I got it. If I had got the #2 or #3 rated lock, and my bike gets stolen [again], I would kick myself for not spending an extra 10 or 20 for buying the best lock there is.

Quality Control Issues, May 13, 2011
By Hammer
|
|
To begin with this is a heavy lock offering heavy duty protection. Less than a month after it was purchased one of the screws holding the dust cover in place fell out and was lost. I emailed Kryptonite requesting a replacement and am hoping they respond timely. Another problem is that it is not locking or unlocking easily 25% of the time. It sometimes takes a few shakes or it needs to held parallel to the ground to get the key to lock or unlock it. This is sometimes difficult when it is locked to a bike rack. Perhaps there is a breaking in period that will help in overcoming this problem. Other than that I am happy with the lock but wished the quality control was better.

Kryptonite Fahgettaboutit- Must have!, April 29, 2011
By A
|
|
I'm so happy that I bought this bike lock. The fact that it's mini means that there is less room between your bike and the lock. This is a good thing. Less room means less leverage space which prevents thieves from breaking the lock. This lock got great reviews! Portable but pretty heavy. Definitely the best price I could find. Amazon saved me money and this bike lock gives me piece of mind.

I use this lock along with a standard Kryptonite U-Lock and two security cables to lock up my standard tricycle and it's safe as can be. I love that the lock actually says "Fahgettaboutit" on it. It really is unbelievably sturdy and with the cable I can run it through front wheel and the frame and finish things off with this U-Lock.

Solid Lock, March 24, 2011
By Tortoise (Minneapolis, MN USA)
|
|
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this lock. It is solid as a rock, and you will feel safe leaving your bike alone with this lock on your bike. The lock, however, isn't ideal for me. It is a little heavy, but that is both expected and respected. Personally, I would get the bigger U-lock because I find it difficult to secure this lock around anything; it is a little small. Also, I would like to be able to remove one wheel and lock both with the U-lock.

Fully satisfied, February 10, 2011

I had my bike stolen last december and i didnt dare purchase a new one until i bought this lock. My expectations have been exceeded... It works more smoothly than any lock i have had, even in snow and waay below zero temperatures. The weight is not too much of an issue either because you can simply clip it to your handlebars when you are riding. And i was also concerned ttat it would be too short to be useful but it has not proved more challenging than my other slightly longer locks to find objects to attach it to. I would give it six stars if i could.

Stout lock, February 3, 2011

This is a beefy lock and I think it deters most thieves by its sheer thickness. It is a little heavy and I wish there was a bike mount that came with it. I have had it for over a month now and have had no problems with it. The key has a light on it which is also cool but other than that it serves its purpose well.

Great Bike Lock, October 13, 2010
By D Wilson
|
|
I purchased the Kryptonite Mini Fahgettaboudit U-Lock just recently. This bike lock is as good as it gets folks. I did a ton of research and looked the world over and i finally settled on this. I live in a suburban area but there are a lot of business and alot of people that live here and we are just outside of the city. The problem i encountered was that i just bought a Trek road bike for 600 dollars and it is worth at least double all the bikes i would lock up next to at school. And i have had my bike stolen there before so i know theft is something to worry about. I figured that if i used this lock and also some component locks like Pinhead locks that no one would be able to steal anything on my bike. Since my bike is at least double the price of all the bikes around it i needed at least double the security.
The thing about this lock is that it is thicker than any other that i have seen in my life. All locks can be cut or broken but you have to think like a theif would ;do i want to spend an hour getting a great expensive bike or spend five minutes with these cable locked cheap bikes and get 5 bikes. Sadly the idea is you dont have to out run the bear just out run the guy next to you if you get what i mean.
I highly recommend this lock it is great and has kept my bike safe. Make sure to get a cable or additional lock to secure other things like your seat and your wheels. And if you don't feel like carrying two locks all the time get component locks there are tons out there and not too many people use them so the common thief doesn't know how to defeat it really which makes your bike much safer in my opinion.
Good Luck!

Hefty formidable and strong, September 27, 2010
By Bash102

This is am impressive lock. From the research I have done it seems like this is one of the strongest U-locks available. Once I had it in my hands I understood. The size, shape, design and parts selection were all done to guarantee security. When I lock my bike with this lock I have no fears that the lock will fail, often I am more concerned about the security of the item I am locking it to. The only downside of this lock that I can find is that it is HEAVY.

Great and Secure Lock - just extremely heavy, September 21, 2010
By mototo
|
|
I'm a college student and I ride my bike to and from school and to class to class. This lock does not come with a bike clip, I'm guessing because it would probably break the clip because of its weight, and that could be inconvenient sometimes. Most of the time I carry it in my backpack, and let me tell you, it's heavier than my books and laptop all together. But other than that, it's a really great lock, I never feel bad when I have to leave my bike locked outside anymore because I'm sure no thief could break through the fahgettaboutit lock! As for the situation with the keys... I know many other reviews say that the keys are horrible and that they'll break in a few days... From my experience, there's nothing wrong with the keys, they are the same as any other u-lock keys. In any case, with any lock, of course you should not expect the keys (or anything for that matter) to be indestructable, so my suggestion is, just be gentle with everything you own and it'll be fine. To sum up, Really secure and wonderful lock! just a little on the heavy side -about 5lbs.

Heavy Duty Lock, September 13, 2010
By AJM650

|
I bought this lock because I had wanted a lock that at the end of the day for sure my bike would still be where i had left it. From the pictures it is hard to really gain a perspective on how large in thickness this lock is! I gave it a 4 star because at times it may be hard to lock up your bike due to its smaller size. But given the choice again I would purchase in an instant!

To say this lock is a tank would be an understatement., July 28, 2010
By Sassy Girl (Chicago, IL USA)

I recently lost my keys and had to have a locksmith get the lock off for me. There's no way to pick the lock so he suggested renting bolt cutters. I laughed and said I'd bring the bike in. Once he saw the lock, he knew why. It took about 15 minutes using an electric tool called an angle saw. Sparks were flying everywhere. There is no way anyone would be able to get this lock off without being noticed. It is rather narrow but I wrap a cable through the front tire and attach it to the lock with the lock attached to the bike frame and the bike rack and it seems to provide more than adequate protection. Convoluted yes but I'd rather have a thoroughly protected bike and work around the limitations. Also... if the gears get tough to unlock or rust develops, I use WD-40 or some graphite powder.

Very solid lock--theft protection a joke, July 20, 2010
By Mike
|
|
This lock is very heavy and solid, and I don't expect any thief around here--Columbus, Ohio--to mess with it. Three keys with free replacement of the first two is nice, and the action is very smooth, although I haven't had it long yet. As another reviewer notes, the theft protection isn't even worth registering for, unless, perhaps, you live in New York, where the deal is slightly different.
The lock is everything you could want (except for weightless), the theft protection caused the four star rating, and is utterly and completely useless.

I feel so much more confident leaving my bike alone but locked with nothing but the best. It gives me the security & peace of mind plus the fact that I did everything I could to protect it, & that to me is well worth it. I have had it for a month & no problems whatsoever, . I got the 7 foot Kryptonite security cable as well which makes it a perfect combo, the Deadly Yellow Frog in terms of locks with it's Vicious Orange friend in terms of cable. Both looks great together too. Awesome product!

this lock is a little on the heavy side, but big on the protection side. i have not come across a u-lock that stands to the level of this one. its big and bulky, looks like it would be more difficult to assault than others out there. NONE BETTER, April 14, 2009
By ishmael2013 (Boston, MA)

The only way to break this lock is to saw through it. But remember, many crooks carry sawing tools and grinders. The thing is, it will take more than one blade or grinder to saw through it, and more than 15 minutes. Moreover, grinding makes a whole lot of noise--enough to wake up the whole neighborhood. That being said, this lock puts your bike at the bottom of the average crooks priority list. An excellent lock.

This is a real piece of protection. Heavy and strong. It is not to carry with you. You will have to leave it where you want to lock your precious bike. You will have peace of mind but not completely, because you can only lock the the bike's frame and one wheel. You will need a cable to lock the other wheel and or the saddle. And most of the cable do not offer very good protection, it is light protection at the most.

Best U-Lock You Can Buy, September 3, 2011
By Ryan
|
|
I think the Kryptonite Fahgettaboutit is the best U-lock you can buy. It has a huge shackle and it's a good size. It's heavier than my Evolution Series 4 standard size U-lock.
I'm using it with my Evo 4 to lock up my new Masi track bike, because I don't want to have to take a wheel off...rather just use two U-locks. The Kyrptonite chain lock looks a little overbearing, so I decided to go with 2 U-locks. The Evo 4 mini is slightly smaller than this, so I decided to go with this one, only because of it's larger size. This way I can fit it all the way around my deep V rim and my thick aero down tube.
Good price here from Amazon.

I'm finally comfortable leaving my bike alone..., September 20, 2011
By Daniel's mom (Baltimore, MD)
|
|
I had my first bike stolen, and have been so paranoid since, never wanting to leave my bike anywhere, even locked up with the U-lock I had. I got this one because it's so small, so thick, and had such good reviews. I'm really happy with it. It leaves no room for leverage attacks, and seems so heavy duty, I'm sure it would take a thief more trouble than it's worth to break through it. I finally feel ok locking up my bike and walking away... what a relief!
One thing I'll say is this lock IS amazingly heavy for its size - if you're looking for something that won't weigh down your ride, this might not be the lock for you. For me, though, I don't mind the weight; I just want the security and peace of mind.

I use this lock in New York City everyday, September 18, 2011
By David Larson
|
|
I have been using this lock in New York City for the last three years. The test that kryptonite originally did on this lock was only one block from where I live now.
I ride everyday in NYC and lock up in the worst bike theft areas. I have never had a problem with this lock and have recommended it to every person I know in the city.
Most bikers in NY use the Kryptonite NY chain but it is too heavy and bulky for me.
The small shackle of this lock does limit what you can lock up to. I am always looking to lock to bike racks or sign posts.
The only way to break this lock is to cut it with a laser cutter, grinder or actually cut the object you locked to. If they try to pry the lock they will destroy your frame in the process rendering your bike worthless for resale.
I would only use this lock if you live in a city or have a bike of high value.

One mean looking lock, September 26, 2011
By Maeraj (CA, USA)

I have a basket on my bike and carry the lock in it when its not in use so the weight of this lock does not really phase me much while riding. I wanted a lock that I could really feel safe using on my bike and this is it--the meanest lock around. I use it with Pinhead Bicycle Locking Skewer Set, 3 Pack because the lock only fits the frame of my Electra Townie. This way I don't have to carry extra cables around.
