Park PCS9 Home Repair Stand Good Buy, November 9, 2007
By Huey G
|
|
The Park PCS9 stand is great. I have only had mine a week and it is already
making my bicycle repair work much easier. I would recommend getting a handle-bar stabilizer to hold front wheel in the straight position. They start at about $15.00. I have been using a Velcro strap and it is not working all that well. Ride Safe!

Good bike stand, but ..., August 11, 2009
By NM Crusader (Las Cruces, NM United States)
|
|
This stand is undoubtedly a good value for the price. It is fairly well built, and holds a bicycle relatively steady so that one can work on it. The only thing that is somewhat annoying is that an allen wrench (provided) has to used to adjust the height of the thing--a fly-wheel would have been more user friendly.
But my big gripe is with the terrible customer service at Park Tool. One of the pieces came to me with what was obvioiusly a factory defect--it was deeply scratched, despite being sealed and padded in the factory packaging. When I contacted Park Tool, they refused to do anything, except to sell me a new replacement part at full price; and then to add insult to injury, they rambled on about how their customer service was "second to none." This sort of stuff is what led Circuit City into bankruptcy!
Well, my saga has a happy ending: the Amazon seller I bought the stand from (BikeSomeWhere) is getting a replacement part and sending it to me at no charge! They certainly have their heads on straight!

A solid repair, July 13, 2008
By G. Petersen (New Hampshire)
|
|
The Park PCS-9 Stand is solid, simple and well built. It holds my bike solidly in whatever position I need and has enough adjustability to accommodate whatever position I need. I bought the handle bar holder after reading another customers review and was glad I did. The combination does everthing I need at a reasonable price. I have only been using it for a few weeks, so I don't know how it will hold up. However, my initial impressions are good and I believe it is made to last. Note, when not in use, the legs "dangle" freely. If you plan to move it around a lot, you will want to use a strap to secure them. Its a minor inconvenience considering the price.

Good for infrequent repair work, January 2, 2010
By M. Wasserman (NJ USA)

I went with this stand strictly because of price and I trust Park Tools products. The clamp works great.
You have to use a hex key to lengthen and shorten the vertical tube as advertised, which can be a bit of a hassle if you are constantly using and storing the stand. it wobbles if you are abusing the pedals of the bike, but I never fear the stand will topple over. for a shop mechanic or someone who will get hours and hours of use from a repair stand, you might want to upgrade to a sturdier stand.
It is a pain to store. the bracket on the bottom that holds the vertical tube to the legs slides up and down when u release the button. however, when you try to raise the bracket the legs just fall on the hinge. there is nothing holding them in place. if you put pressure on the stand when the legs are open, sometimes they get pinched in the bracket and stay in position when picking it up off the ground or sliding the bracket up. otherwise everytime u want to put the stand away, you raise the bracket, the legs flop down to vertical.
the other issue is, once you release the button and slide the bracket up, there is nothing keeping it up by the clamp. there should be another button up top to clip the bracket into place so you can carry the stand without the bracket falling and the legs flopping around.
for those, like me, who are just going to take it out once or twice a month to do some minor repair, lubrication, or cleaning, its great. For the price, it is worth taking the 2-3 minutes trying to put the stand away with all the flopping and sliding. once its up, its great!

It is All That, September 14, 2009
By JWW (Ottawa, Canada)

Park Tools make the best bike repair tools in the business -- period. They may be a bit more expensive, but they are well worth it.
After vacillating back and forth between the PCS-10 and PCS-9, I decided I would save some money and get the lower end unit. I have not been disappointed. It is incredibly sturdy, and was very easy to assemble. It only took 20 minutes from unpacking to final screw. The nylon ring/collapsible leg feature is actually quite genius. Don't be confused by other reviews, this is a fully collapsible stand. The feet swing downwards, and the metal bracket which the feet are attached to unlocks out of place with the push of a spring clip, and the bottom of the unit slides up the main post for easy storage.
This is a rock-solid stand, and while many will not mind spending the extra $30 or so for the quick-release mechanisms of the PCS-10, this unit will suit virtually any home bike mechanic.
Another great Park Tools product.

Park Bicycle Repair Stand PCS-9, August 9, 2008
By George M. Strickler (New Orleans)

One of the best purchases I've ever made for my bike life. It's very sturdy and has a great clamp for holding the bike. I can put as much weight on this thing as I'm capable of. Haven't tried it with a bottom bracket or a stubborn set of pedals, but for 99% of what the average cyclist is going to do on a bike this thing works fine. And it breaks down for travel. I was tempted to buy a cheaper stand and there are a number out there in the $40-50 range but was disuaded by some of the reviews. Don't waste your money.

High quality - 2 quibbles, June 12, 2009

Well constructed. Sturdy. The folding legs are a big plus for those with limited storage space. Two things that could make it better: 1) It could be a little lighter. 2) The telescopic height control should be adjustable without a hex wrench.

Great stand for the home bike mechanic, August 9, 2010
By Have Raleigh, will travel (Chicago)
|

I got super lucky and picked up a PCS-9 at a garage sale for $40 (in like new condition) from someone who was moving across the country and wanted to get rid of just about everything rather than paying a lot of money for someone to move their stuff.
I couldn't be happier with this unit. It folds down really easily to a 5-foot long 6-inch diameter unit (except for the head which sticks out a little to the side) that is pretty compact and easy to store. It fits in the corner of a closet or your furnace room or under a bed. It's pretty light so it is easy to lug around and set up. It takes about 30 seconds to set this up. You push the button and let the vertical pole pop up and the legs fold down. It is pretty compact -we brought it home in the trunk of a Mazda Miata. If you pull the bottom rubber bumper off you can slide the top half totally out of the bottom legs portion which allows the unit to be stored in an even smaller space.
The three points that touch the ground are capped with rubber boots which will not scratch the floor or slide around. You might want to put down a tarp so that you don't drop any oil from your chain or whatever when you are working on your bike.
The clamp works very well and is pretty strong. Surely the high-end bike stands have quick-release clamps which speeds up loading and unloading but if you are just working on your own bike every once in a while instead of one bike after another all day you will hardly be inconvenienced by the handy screw-handle with an easily manipulated lever which takes a whole 5 seconds to tighten to wherever you want to grip the bike. NOT a hardship. Even for a pro wrench it wouldn't be that big of a deal.
The height adjustment isn't very handy as you need to use an Allen wrench to loosen the bolt on the collar. I'm thinking I might want to replace the upper collar bolt with one that has a large handle or wing on it. I don't know why it doesn't come this way from Park unless they are afraid that such a bolt sticking out might be easily bent or damaged.
The paint seems REALLY tough and seems to be really difficult to scratch. I don't store mine outside so I don't know how well it resists rust but if the perceived quality of the paint is any indication I would imagine it would hold up better than many other tools.
Park sells a handlebar clamp for $10-15 which is just a bit of heavy-gauge wire covered with plastic to hold the bars from moving around. You can make this yourself with a bit of coated wire hanger or just use a couple of bungee cords back to the seat from each end of the handlebars. Usually I just point the front of the bike down a little so the front wheel naturally wants to stay centered unless I'm doing some heavy work on the front end.
Even a heavy bike (my old 80's MTB with fenders, racks, and other farkles/gear weights a good 35lbs) sits fine on the stand and doesn't wobble around much. I'm very impressed with how handy this stand is. It's better than flipping the bike over on the bars and the seat and working on the bike upside-down and too low.
Cons:
The only downside of this stand is you should be careful setting it up and folding it. While it's not heavy it's heavy enough that when the legs fold up unexpectedly you can get your finger smashed or your nail whacked hard enough to cause it to turn purple and black (I did this the second time I picked it up to put in my trunk!) But any pliers or adjustable tool can pinch you if you are not paying attention to what you are doing and are not familiar with its use. Hopefully this warning will help at least one person not get a purple/black thumbnail like I did one of the first times I picked mine up. Once I figured out how this thing folds I've never had an issue with it again.
Sure, there are better stands out there -but for the cost of just over 100 bones this is good enough to do the job. This is true especially if you don't have a lot of room or a lot of cash to spend almost 2 (or more) times as much on a really slick pro model for features the average guy who isn't standing behind his stand 8 hours a day, every day.

Works well with any bike in any position. Very solid and fits in a closet when folded. I just built two bikes on this thing and had no problems whatsoever. A must for the home bike mechanic on a budget. The only problem I have is all my friends trying to get free bike-work done and a lack of free time!

I bought the stand because of its glowing reviews.
While the stand will hold up your bike, it won't hold it steady. Plus after returning one, the replacement required 4-5 washers so that the skewer bolt could snug down, and hold the clamped bicycle in a position. Second rate.

Clamp kept rotating, November 20, 2011
By Paleo Reader (OKC, USA)
|
|
I couldn't tighten down the handle tight enough to keep the clamp from rotating. Not sure what the deal was...seems that the bolt that the handle attaches to might be too long or something. But I solved the problem by adding a few washers and now I can turn the handle tight enough to keep the bike and clamp from rotating.

This stand makes even the simpliest work on a bike a breeze. As an added bonus I didn't know that it did fold up for storage which is why I almost bought the PCS-10 over this one, but I'm glad I didn't. I use it for clean/maintenance on my wife and I's mountain bikes. The rotate and height adjustment lets you put the bike exactly where you need it. Definitely worth the money.

Sturdy, great for the price, good customer service, September 28, 2010
By Ken Otsuka

I ride intermediate to advanced trails couple times a week. I bought it so that it is easier to tune up and do minor repairs. This product is basic but very sturdy and works well. It came with one of the rubber cap missing. Though I didn't really need the part for it to work, (especially because it sits in the concrete floor in the basement) I just wanted it to be a complete product so I e-mailed them via amazon about the missing part. They contacted me immediately and sent me it. Good sturdy product and good customer service. I like it!

This is the third hand I always needed. No more fumbling or sore backs. Conveniently holds bike where it is most comfortable - and holds it securely. Lacks the cam-lock clamp of the more expensive models, but the screw mechanism works smoothly and holds almost any tube on the bike. In my experience Park tools are quality and this home stand is an excellent value.

Good work stand for the price., February 7, 2010
By Andrew Craighead

Purchased this to keep on my apartment patio to work on my bikes. Good sturdy design, will definately hold bicycles of any weight with easy. The only complaints are that it requires allen wrenches to adjust height, and it can be extremely hard to adjust the swivel. quick release on the clamp would be nice, but the screw type is a cheaper substitute and does it's job. Reccomend if you are on a budget! Otherwise get one that is easier to adjust.

wow, this thing is alot more sturdy then i expected. Awesome!!! nice rubber type grip to hold the bike, so it doesn't scratch your bike. this thing is sturdy! got a heavy mountain bike on it, and it still holds great. got my lite weight specialized road bike on there and it's nice to work on.
I don't suggest weak bike stands, this one already wombles more than i would like, but i bet it's the strongest you'll find out there. So don't settle for something less, get this one :)

good stand but doesn't fold, September 25, 2011
By carlos
|
|
this is a good stand but the only thing that keeps me from saying it is great is that it doesn't fold. from the pic I thought the stand would fold with the legs up so it would be compact but it doesn't. it folds down or away so it actually doubles in length. great if you are laying it down but it takes up a lot of room either laying down or standing up. I was looking for something that would fold. anyway, it works great as a stand and is perfect for working on my road, mountain and tri bike without falling over or marring the finish on my paint. but again if you are looking for something that folds up nicely, this isn't it. you have to take the legs off to store it in a compact space.

Heavy and stable, but folds up nicely, May 31, 2011
By A redneck on the bayou. (Baton Rouge, LA USA)

This stand makes bike maintenance a pleasure. You can raise the bike up to eye level and crank and tweak till you get it right. It seems a little unstable until you put a bike on it, then geometry takes over and it sits rock steady. You can clamp to any tube and then rotate the clamp to hold the bike at any angle you like. When you're done, it folds up to a nice compact package.
I don't see the need to pay $30 more for the PCS-10 unless you are in a production situation. I never need to work on more than one bike a day.

Average home user, August 27, 2011
By CLC
|
|
This repair stand is very sturdy, well built quality product. My brother bought the next level higher and more expensive and functionally I like mine better because it holds the bike away from the stand. With the more expensive model you can put the clamp on the bike and then put it on the stand. Maybe easier, maybe not. The quality of the materials are equal, and are very high compared to less expensive ones on the market. Big advantage to a home user is that it is compact and easy to store. My advice is pay a few dollars more for a quality product that you well enjoy for years to come. (Apple computer users, you know what I am talking about)

Good, but not great., August 27, 2011
By KTS (Houston)
|
|
I bought this because of price and now, having used it, I wish I had paid the extra for a Feedback Sports stand. This stand is good, it is stable, but it is made of tubular steel not aluminum like the FBS stands. It is clumsy to move around and store. This is mainly because it does not fold up anywhere as easily as the FBS, in fact it does not fold up completely. It was about $60 cheaper, but now having had to deal with its fixed horizontal support tube (the part that holds the clamp) and having seen what a pain it is to move and store, I would gladly have paid the extra bucks. That said, it does what it is supposed to do. It is sturdy, took 10 min to set up, and holds the bike very well. As someone mentioned in another review, Park was unduly cheap in not providing a system for raising and lowering the bike without use of an allen wrench. On the FBS all it takes is a twist and you extend the column. I plan to fix that problem as another reviewer suggested using wing bolts to replace the allen bolts, but shouldn't have to since it only would have cost a dollar or so for Park to do it in the first place, and even with that fix it will still be a pain to raise and lower the bike when compared to the ease of the FBS. I am also disappointed the the plastic caps on the two legs pop off so easily. I will have to glue them in place so the end of the tubes don't get damaged on the concrete. I am a bit concerned that any nicks in the paint will spawn rust and that this create unnecessary problems. Again a simple thing for Park to deal with at the factory, but which the chose to pass on to the consumer. Like I said, it does what it is supposed to, but I really think that unless you absolutely can't afford it, buy the FBS or other more practical stand.

Grate home stand, October 26, 2011
By R.H. Gnann

This is a grate home stand. It was easy to assemble, and adjust. It is a good solid stand unlike my last one ($49.99 Taiwan) it's not so heavy that you can't move it around with out busting a gut. We are a family of 5 bikes, and don't go to the local bike shop to have our bikes maintained. I've been working on my own and friend's bikes since I was about 10 and used a homemade bike stand all those years now I'm 50 and wanted something that would look nice and perform adequately. I tried the cheap way out being a penny pincher I should have known better, but did it anyway. Save yourself $50.00 and get a stand that's not made out of ironing board legs. I leave my stand up but the legs do fold up for storage. The head rotates 360 degrees so you can flip your bike easily. It has a telescopic height adjustment that requires a hex key to adjust if you don't like that you can find a hand knob at the local hardware store I don't have a problem with the hex key. The base is removable via a ball and spring catch. The clamp has rubber cushioning so not to mar your paint or stickers. This stand looks good enough to put in the living room (if you don't have a wife). Bottom line good home stand that is sturdy enough to hold up your heaviest mountain bike with ease.

Great, Sturdy Product, October 14, 2011

I have had this for a few weeks now and am very happy with my purchase, the build quality is great, prior to purchase I thought the item was kind of weak looking based off the pictures but in person it is quite the opposite. This unit is very sturdy. It went together in approximately 10 minutes (tools included with purchase). I clamp mine to the seat post and don't have to crank down on it to get it to hold, has great gripping power. I typically leave my bike in the clamp after a ride until the next time I am ready to ride which can be several days. makes working on the bike very easy. I highly recomend this product to anyone who is looking for a bike stand for maintenance.

Great Help, September 24, 2011

This has been a great help for me as I am always tinkering with some bike, adjusting shifters, brakes, changing tires and cleaning. Works great at replacing the wife, "come here and hold this", line. If you want to move up in your own bicycle maintenance then you need this product that comes with the Park name. I replaced the socket screw with a hand knob so I have quick adjustments. The only problem I have noticed is it will turn side ways when applying pressure at an angle which can be compensated for in your work. I would buy this again and highly recommend this for any home mechanic.

First glance - awesome!, September 9, 2011

After a long search, I bought this one because of the reviews so I thought I would thrown my $0.02 in as well. I received this stand today and just put it together (which took all of 5 minutes, and...I'm a girl!). I expected a good product from Park Tool, but this thing is way more than I anticipated. It's substantial, it's adjustable to heights that are perfect...frankly, I can't say enough about my positive initial impression. Definitely quality stuff. I am really surprised at that given the sub-$100 price tag. I'll update once I get some time using it on my current build. But, so far (less than an hour) it's a 10/10!

A necessary addition to my bike tool inventory, September 9, 2011

This stand works exactly as expected. It is worth every penny. I will say this though, I have kicked myself several times for not spending a few more dollars for the PCS10. I would like to be able to add the wheel truing attachment, but it won't fit the PCS9!

Great design, Solid build, April 22, 2012

The Park PCS-9 stand is the best buy for anyone who works on bikes. I maintain 5 bikes with it, my 2 mountain bike and a road bike, and the girlfriend's mountain and road bike. It is quite sturdy, quickly folds up to lean up in a closet for storage and clamps tightly to the seatpost or wherever else to hold the bike at any desired angle. It even has grooves in the clamp for cables to run without scratching the frame or crimping the casings.
As previously stated, it really helps to spend few bucks at the local hardware store to get knobs for the height adjust. Even without this, I just clamp on the seatpost and that gives me plenty of play in height to get it where I want.
Overall, the frame is sturdy, yet not too heavy. But the clamp is what you're really paying for. I was looking into building my own stand, but this was barely more than parts would have cost me, with an extremely easy and smooth clamping mechanism. You won't be disappointed.

Provides just the right height and stability, March 11, 2012

The Park Repair Stand has given me the mobility, stability and height that I couldn't master with my own ropes and pulley system above my workbench. The only drawback is there's nothing to keep the front wheel from listing... unless I get out my ropes and secure it. But, definitely a good purchase at the price I paid.

Yeah, it's expensive but..., March 7, 2012

Expensive but considering the quality it's not too bad. I considered the cheaper stands but the bad reviews sent me back to the Park.
The build is rock solid - solid metal hardware and tough abs-like plastic parts.
The raise/lower clamp requires an allen key to adjust. You can buy a knob from a hardware store to fix the annoyance. It wouldn't have killed park to just include a knob.
The bicycle clamp is fine for typical aluminum frames but be wary on carbon fiber frames and seatposts. There are of course precautions and work-arounds that can be taken. I also believe there are alternative clamps that can be purchased. I suppose Park believes that if we spend the money on carbon fiber we should shell out proportionately more for repair stands.
Overall, an excellent product for a less than attractive price. I would shop around more next time knowing there aren't many alternatives.

Best Bike Stand for the Novice New Bike Machanic, February 19, 2012
By Big Zig

The Park Tool PCS-9 is thee best bike stand I have found. I looked at all the major competitors I could find in my local area. Even though I am new to repairing and maintaining my bicycle I have over 25 years experience as a new product development engineer so I know a good design when I see one. Each components is well manufactured and you can tell the company uses quality control methods. The instructions are basic, yet easy to understand and follow. I put the stand together in a manner of minutes. The best part of this stand is that I can fold it up and store it where it is out-of-the-way yet easily accessible for the next time. The only improvement I could think of is a small place to clip in the allen wrench need to adjust the height. Great stand - you won't be dissappointed.

This is a great stand for someone who does the occasional repair at home. Very sturdy and will hold up a tandem. I replaced the Allen key bolt that extend's the stand with a quick release seat post clamp, that way you don't have to worry about losing the Allen key.

This stand is great very stable, folds up farly small. Legs slide up then down so it gets fairly small. Clamp and arm have quick releases but the pole must be unbolted to slide up and down.

When you have to have one, February 1, 2012

Of course I wanted the version that has to be bolted to the floor and has the quick release like in the bike shops, but I settled for this. I'm glad I did. The clamp is not quick release but it holds very well and is quite easy to open and close. The only reason I don't give it five stars is that the base has a habit of unhitching and sliding up the pole while I'm working on a bike. Still absolutely worth having a bike stand that is pretty stout and fairly portable.

Perfect DYI bike stand, December 20, 2011
By wrandall22

I purchase this stand to do my own repairs and cleaning. This stand is perfect for job. It is simply to set up and use. I use it more than I thought I ever would. I thought I would only use it for tune-ups but find I am using it to hold my bike during normal maintenance and cleaning. It folds up to a tall flat unit and I have it hanging in my garage. It doesn't take up any floor space. For the price of a tune-up you can own a great portable stand that doesn't take up any room.

The bike stand is very handy. It is a very good enrty level price. It's great for cleaning, tuning, and changing tires. The only drawback is the clamp does not easily rotate as shown in the ad. The bottem line is I WOULD recommend this product to a friend.
