Bright white, August 26, 2008
By RW (Upstate/West NY)
|
|
These lights work well, seem to be sturdy in construction and one battery seems to last quite a while. I'm very pleased with them but I couldn't give them 5 stars due to the design of the white light.
I had been using them for about a week and had to take an extra early ride in to work. It was my first when it was dark out. When I turned on the white light on the handlebars it shone in a wide arc, over 180 degrees up and down and left and right. I couldn't see because the light was shinning in my face as well as everywhere else.
A piece of black tape on the top part of the light and I was soon on my way. An easy fix to this if it happens to you.
Still riding with it and it is still working well. It's getting a bit darker every morning this time of year.
As other have noted this light shouldn't be counted on to light your way in the dark (I usually ride on lighted streets) but it will make you much more visible to others on the road.

Very cool for kids, August 6, 2007
By A. Shea (Atlanta, GA)
|
|
Just got these in the mail, so can't speak for battery life, but these are really neat for kids bikes. I have a 5 and 8 year old, and they love these little lights. They are about the size of a small egg... not very big at all, but they really are very bright. The headlight bulb fit perfect on the bike and has 3 modes. Push the button once and it flashes (fast like a strobe light), push the button again and the light stays on, push again and turns off. The head light can also be adjusted up or down. Very easy to install and use. The red light does the same except does not adjust once on the bike. My kids were riding in the garage in the dark today having a blast with these lights! I'd even get one for my own bike, if I rode at night. Very fast shipping also.

Does exactly what it is mean to, June 10, 2008
By The Derrty Egg
|
|
They are cheap and work great. That is pretty much all there is to these. However, make sure that you are buying these in order to make yourself more visible to drives, and not to make late night rides more visible to you. They do offer some light on your pathway, but not enough to make it worth it if that is your goal. If, like me, you are simply looking for an inexpensive way to keep from getting hit by drivers at night, then this is one of your best choices.

excellent value to price, March 31, 2008

Update 4/12/08. Light mount on helmet modification.
As discussed in the original review, I've now mounted one of the rear lights on the back of my helmet, a Bell Aguila. The light fits extremely well in the back most indentation/air flow vent on the helmet in either the vertical or horizontal position. Better yet, I mounted it without modifying the helmet or the light and it can be removed in seconds.
I used four rubber bands and passed them around the "upright" for the base of skull "catch" on the helmet's liner portion. The ends of the rubber bands are pulled out and slipped over the clip for the light. Given that UV eats rubber here, I put a pipe-cleaner around the clip and the band as a failsafe should the rubber bands fail.
Pull the light out 1/4" and you can rotate it to the position you like best. A bit of wiggling when seating the light will get edges, clips, arms and such aligned and the light stays tightly, smoothly, in the back of the helmet.
Why all this effort you might ask? I'm a true believer. I'm alive because of Bell helmets and making myself visible (though I didn't do ENOUGH 'back then', I wouldn't be here if it weren't for my helmet). With kids, I will do everything in my power to make them visible and safe wherever possible.
In any event, at near zero cost, 2 minutes of "labor" and the slightest dash of creative brain power, you can install a light on your helmet that makes you VASTLY more visible via the (higher) location, the movement imparted by pedaling, gossiping with your riding partner or just the movement of your head as you look around in wonder.
This tiny modification makes me MUCH more relaxed when riding around traffic and makes our rides much more enjoyable. It will also allow me to keep a better watch over my brood with much less effort. By morning I'll have the kids' helmets done, then we wait till the last order I placed (for Sylvia's helmet) arrives and we'll be a Matchin', Flashin', Family GANG (Man) (VVBG)
------------------------------
These little lights are really a great value. They're quite bright and extremely visible. Small, easy to handle and flexible in use. My son, in particular, kills or loses lights with all too much regularity, but that's rather to be expected from a 10 year old.
I purchases several sets to have some backups. I'm contemplating removing the clip form a couple of the red ones and gluing them to the back of various helmets since we often ride after dark given the weather in our Phoenix desert environment.
The batteries, while to first appearance, are odd, they're actually quite common and becoming more so everyday. They are commonly available and the lithium should give a significant service and storage life.
I am likely to order another couple of sets in the near future just for backup.

Not Good For Daytime Safety, July 11, 2008
By B. Semple (Boston, MA United States)
|
|
I purchased these for my commute to work during daylight hours. I travel along two lane roads that have lots of shadows due to trees. My concern has been that with the right angle of sunlight, a driver will over look me.
For my purpose, these LEDs are just not bright enough nor do they have enough spread for day time riding. Even riding at dusk or on cloudy days through shadows, the LEDS just dont put out enough light where I felt as though drivers could see me. I returned these and purchased the more expensive three LED Planet Bike for the rear, and the Blackburn Quadrant for the front. Its 4x the price, but probably whats needed.

Tiny Lights That Make You Visible, March 24, 2009
By Shade
|
|
Don't know what those who dislike these lights expect for 10 bucks, but they deliver quite well, as promised. Note that Planet Bike refers to them as "Safety" lights. No, they don't illuminate (very well) the ground in front of you, BUT they do make a bicycle highly visible from some distance, thus enhancing the cyclist's safety. They are small and lightweight, and easily fit in a pocket when not in use. It's true, as some have complained, that the mounting brackets are somewhat fragile, made of thin plastic, but if you're reasonably careful when you fit them over your bars or tubes you'll have no problem. Cripes people! you get two led lights with 2 settings (constant light or intermittent), 2 mounting brackets with screws for 10 bucks!!! What more do you need to give something 5 stars? So long as you treat them like the tiny, somewhat fragile items which they are, I suspect they will provide years of quality service.

I love blinky light!, March 22, 2008
By http://themadhapa.blogspot.com (Orange County, CA)

I wanted a simple, easy to install set of lights for my bike. I commute to and from work everyday on some busy city streets. The blinky lights were a snap to put on and you can't beat the price. The lights don't provide any illumination, but the flash feature certainly attracts attention.
Big thumbs up.

Works great and have lasted over a year on one battery. Battery is a watch style and mounting is simple. Rear red light is bright and noticed in the dark of night. Liked them so much, have ordered for the kids bikes. Great price and they are water resistant.

Obscure batteries suck! Should be AA, or AAA only!, March 30, 2008
By PNOLA (New Orleans, LA)
|
|
I bought these as flashing lights to protect me from cars - not to illuminate my path (I've got a pair of Cateyes for that). These are cheap (that's why they're cheap). While they do flash nicely, the batteries cost about the same as the stupid lights I suspect, I haven't bought new ones because I haven't seen them anywhere I've glanced at. They're obscure watch battery like things, not the AAA's I was hoping for.

Good Safety Lights, September 21, 2008
By Tennis Ace (WA, USA)

These are a little bit smaller than what I had expected but does it's job for one of our adult bikes. It came with 3 bracket mounts, I believe they're all different sizes. I used the two bigger ones. One was too big, but it also comes with 3 rubber rings to put inside the brackets, so when I used one of those it fits fine. All you need is a philips screwdriver to get them on.

I bought 2 sets for my kid's bikes. They are small, which goes very well with kids' bikes. They are very bright! Very easy to install. I wanted something to make the bikes more visible if/when my kids ride them in the late afternoon. Plus, I know they will enjoy riding their bikes even more with these flashing lights on them!

Perfect "to be seen" lights., July 1, 2010
By Jeff
|
|
These are great lights at a reasonable price. I went down a very dark road and could only see directly in front of me using the white light on my handlebars so I would not suggest this as a path lighting light. The red light is very bright and the blinking, I was told, is extremely annoying at a good distance so you know you are being seen. I am not sure of the longevity of these but I went over some pretty brutal bumps with not so much as a shift in either light. At $15 I am happy with the results and would suggest this set to a friend or family member.

These little guys are great. It's very easy to attach the bracket that hold the lights. They attach and detach quickly. I've been using them for about 2 months for commuting in NYC and the lights are still very bright. If you're looking for a front light that will actually light your way for you, this in not the product. These are simply to let others know you are there. Also, I paid double the amazon price at a local bike shop and they are still very much worth the price.

Great value, April 19, 2008
By V. J. Grabauskas (Upper Arlington, Ohio United States)

I bought these lights for my little kid's bike. I bought them primarily because my bigger kid has a headlight on his bike and the four year old would want one too. It took a bit of time to figure out where to mount the lights because the bike was so small. The lights are bright enough at night that the bike is visible from quite a distance even though he is not allowed to go anywhere without an adult walking along.
Like all of the Planet Bike products I have bought recently, this is great value.

Wrong Picture!!, August 30, 2010
By Saul M. Horowitz (NY, NY USA)

The item here has the wrong picture, which is a bit confusing, to say the least. What is named and described is a pair of 1-LED flashers, a red rear one and a white front one. This item is not the single rear flasher that is pictured. You can see what you're ordering on the Blinky website. I've added a pic of what you actually get.

Itty bitty lights, March 4, 2009
By greynine (Portland Maine)

These lights are a very good price. They are small, single LED, elongated ping pong ball sized. If you are the real deal, riding with the big boys, claim your lane, street cyclist, these small lights probably are not sufficient to keep you safely in view. These days I ride primarily on rural roads, sidewalks and bike paths so I just wanted lights so I would be considered street legal. These fit my purpose, but I make sure I am way over if I hear a car coming.

Inexpensive, gets the job done, mounting bracket design not great. Wrong picture., June 21, 2011
By Vasiliy
|
|
Inexpensive light set that will make you visible to others at night. However, the front light won't light the path in front of you (it isn't bright enough and its position is not adjustable), so if you are not riding a lit path I would recommend investing in a headlight.
The only issue I had with this light set (I have two sets of these) is the design of the mounting bracket -- the nut is finely ribbed and molded into the plastic -- if it becomes loose you can't tighten it again. I wish it was some kind of standard hex nut that would not come loose from repeated tightening, or that could be replaced if it is lost.

The main photo of the light set is not representative of the product. The lights are great! I've had them over a year now and use them pretty frequently. The battery has not died yet. The lights easily detach when you need to take them with you. Each light (one red and one white) has two settings, blinking and not blinking. Biking at night is dangerous (especially in NYC) and these lights help keep me visible.

great lights for the price!!, November 23, 2010
By Craig

We have had these lights for about a month and are very happy with them. I have a 4 year old son who needs to burn off energy, so being able to ride bikes after dark has been great in easing the pain of "winter lockdown". The lights mount easy and work great. They are very bright and visible for quite a distance. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better light for less money. Keep in mind, this is not a headlight, but really more of a beacon to be seen. Although the headlight will light the road to a small extent, it's really better at functioning to be seen.

to blink or not to blink, August 6, 2010
By P. Robichaux
|
|
these little blinkies were easy to install and work great. Very bright and wide viewing angle so cars on the side can see you blinking. Choose between flashing, solid on, or off with a small button. Others have complained the button was too small, but I had no problems. Installation was easy, and its feels very sturdy once installed. to change battery, you need to just stick a coin into the side of the plastic covering for the light and it pops off easily. This concerns me on longtime durability, but the price is worth the chance. If you need these lights as headlights to see where you're going, they can suffice somewhat, but a bigger front light may be desired. BATTERIES INCLUDED!

Great Deal for Great Light Set!, June 29, 2010
By Summers Pearl (Los Angeles, CA USA)
|
|
First of all... the main product picture on this page is not a picture of what you get, which is weird. The picture was correct when I purchased it, but now it's changed. Be sure to look at the customer images that someone else has supplied to see what you're REALLY getting!
That said, this set of one white front light and one rear red light is GREAT! The price is right and I'm very happy with the product. I didn't use any of the provided hardware to attach them to my cruiser, but it's nice that it came with it as an option.
These little lights are surprisingly bright and will definitely alert cars to your presence. They have both a steady and a blinking setting. The white light illuminates surprisingly well and is totally fine for familiar and easy streets, but it's definitely not comparable to an actual headlight if you really need to SEE where you're going.
I wanted something very small and unnoticeable for my bike because I have the "classic cruiser" look going on, and these little lights make me street-legal without having to compromise the look of my bike. Altogether a great purchase for a great price!

Excellent purchase! Couldn't be happier!, April 20, 2010
By Atomic Grrrrrl (Brooklyn, NY USA)
|
|
Being an unrepetant cheapskate, I needed a basic pair of bike lights, so bought this set sight unseen based on the price. I didn't know what to expect, really, but was pleasantly surprised when I eventually received them. Rather than be cheap-looking and flimsy, these bike lights are quite sturdy and have so far survived all kinds of harsh weather (mud, slush, and rain), as well as one major bike crash. Also, they're amazingly bright-- not bright enough to light up the path in front of you, of course, but bright enough to be seen by other motorists. I couldn't believe it when I noticed the blinking from the white lights being reflected off buildings and signs several feet away. But as they say, looks can be deceiving, and these little guys can throw off quite a bit of light.
On the downside, the lights are quite small-- not a problem for me, personally, but might be a problem for those who might not feel as safe with lights of these size and want something larger for peace of mind. This is especially true for anyone hoping to double the white front light as a headlight. Not gonna happen-- the lights were only designed to make you visible to everyone and nothing more.
Another con is that the lights may be a little troublesome to attach depending on how your bike is made. For example, if your handles are like mine (too thick to attach with rubber insert, but too skinny to use without), you might have a bit of trouble getting the front light to install without some maneuvering or a hack.
Faults aside, these are very good lights for the price and great as a starter before graduating to more expensive sets. I recommend them highly if you want to get lights but can't afford something more high end.

Bicycle light set, February 7, 2010
By hunter (USA)

|
They're really nice, and I think every bike should have them. powerful and install really easy, I just wish they made them to install on different size. right now they would install on the handle bar or the seat. My kid seat is all the way down. So all I did is glowed a Velcro strap to it and now I can Velcro the light any where I want, including the back of her helmet... Also, I found this way to be better so it's easy to move it from bike to another, while the other bikes are not in use. (u never can be toooooo much safe)

GOOD DEAL, January 28, 2010
By OTOKONOKO (San Francisco, CA)

Inexpensive and effective. Not a lot of white light to see your way clearly, but enough white (front) and red (rear) to alert everyone near you that you are there. Essential for dusk to dawn riding, especially here in the city with crazy traffic. I like that there are 2 settings besides off .... steady and flashing. Easy to install. I am eager to see how long the batteries last and how much they cost to replace.

Capable and very affordable, December 25, 2009
By Sam (CA)

The lights attached to the bike very securely and I haven't had any problems with them shifting around. Neither side is super-bright, but they will make you visible to drivers. Don't expect the front light to act as a headlight to let you see what's in front of you. At this price, these lights are "value" items but they don't feel like they're going to fall apart.

i LOVE my Blinkies. b-r-i-g-h-t ! I actually think the white is o.k. as a front light. It's not a beam, but it's not dim by any means. update: my blinkies have survived the recent downpours. They seem to be waterproof. 5th star earned :)

For the price you can't get better!, June 17, 2009
By The Sideman (Boston MA USA)

These things are deceiving at first because they are so small. I was surprised and momentarily blinded by how bright these are. If your looking for something to light a totally dark path get something else but if your just looking to help make sure you are seen these are perfect.

Bright and affordable., May 26, 2009
By E. Salas (San Francisco, CA)
|
|
For the $15 price tag, these lights are a steal. The white light is very bright and I can see its reflection off of stop signs two blocks ahead. After being told by a motorcyclist that my red light was going to give her seizures, I felt assured that my rear was well lit too. They're easily assembled onto the bike and have either a horizontal or vertical pitch to best direct the light. And they come with rubber liners to prevent scratching of your bike. And importantly, these are safety lights, not headlights. A must buy.

Can't beat the price, January 28, 2009
By S. Lewis (Washington, DC)
|
|
I use these lights for riding at night. I use the white light on the blinking setting on the front, just for visibility--it's not bright enough to act as an actual headlight. The red light isn't bright enough for me to feel safe using it on its own. I put it on my bag, and have a brighter light (Planet Bike Blinky "7" 7-Led Rear Bicycle Light) attached to my bike. With both of them on the blinking setting, I feel sufficiently visible to cars.

Not the brightest, but a good value, December 17, 2008
By RG (California)
|
|
I was looking for a small, inexpensive rear blinky light for my bike. This comes with a front and rear light for about the same price as many single lights. The one drawback is that they are not very bright. I don't use the front light because it's not bright enough to light the road in front of me. But both lights are bright enough to be spotted by cars at a reasonable distance. So you can use both of them if you only use them to make sure cars see you riding. If you are looking for a light bright enough to light up the road, you should consider something else.
Update 10/13/09
One unfortunate design flaw I've discovered is that the lights are too easy to remove. The bracket screws onto your bike seat post but the light snaps into the bracket so that it is easily removable just by pushing a tab and snapping it out. Well someone snapped out my light while I wasn't around. Unfortunately that seems to be the design that all the blinky tail lights use. I bought a different one and it has the same design. So I try to remember to take it with me when I get off the bike so nobody else does it instead.

Good for the money, but not a solo light, December 28, 2010
By QuakerProf
|
|
I'm a regular bicycle commuter, about 18 miles roundtrip 3-5 days/week year-round. The SuperFlash is definitely the best light in the under $30 category, but I would hesitate to use it as my only rear light. If you have a chance of riding at dusk, spend the money on the DiNotte 140 watt light (about 120 online).
See discussions of lighting on bikeforums.net. You should be concerned with active (electronic) and passive (reflective) lighting, as well as side visibility (not just front and back).

ok could be brighter, February 26, 2009
By R. S. Thompson (NV, United States)

i was looking for a small front flashing light when not using my regular bicycle headlight. the set contains two compact led lights.
the light housing has a clip on the back and the set comes with mounting clamps.
the clip on the back of the light fixture cinches onto a installed handlebar bag. this is good.
but the light isnt as bright as bright as i had hoped and i feel can be mistaken for reflected sunlight off of urban surfaces.
no problems with battery life thus far.

Not as advertised, December 11, 2010
By newsman (Corpus Christi, Texas United States)

The product received was not as advertised online. The online ad stated the bike Blinky light had 7 LED lights. When clicking the button to check out, it stated Planet Bike Blinky Safety 1-Led Bicycle Set. I was not sure which one was accurate, so decided to go with the advertised description. I was wrong. I installed the lights on my bicycles anyway and they work well enough. I just don not like being duped. I would like to think that it was a careless mistake.

Doesn't stay on, February 23, 2010
By Sapper (DC)
|
|
I had this light set for a few weeks and due to the recent snow, I have been taking my bike off more curbs than usual. I think that the jarring of my bike caused the rear light to detach from the holder. I was very disappointed to see that the light didn't stay attached despite the bumps. The front light is still attached. They aren't even that bright. If you're just looking for something cheap and basic it's fine, but don't bother with it if you don't want to replace it when it falls off.

Just right for our rides., September 15, 2011
By Cassandra Wolf (Phoenix, AZ USA)
|
|
I love how tiny these lights are, and how easy they are to use. I don't need a ton of light because we do most of our biking in a neighborhood, so they do their job well. I feel that passing cars are very able to see us because of these lights, and the headlight provides just enough illumination to keep us from running into obstacles in our paths. I think if we were mountain biking at midnight we would need something stronger, but for our purposes these are more than adequate.

These lights work well--I'm not sure how a blinky light for the back of a bike could be outstanding, so I don't mean "just fine" as a derogatory comment! These are a good value. I leave my bike outside most of the day--in rain, sleet, and snow--and the light hasn't been affected.

Low price and a must-have!, October 21, 2011
By Stephan (Milpitas, CA United States)

These blinkers work just as described. It is a must for riders who ride when there isn't adequate sunlight. The front, white blinker is only good to warn oncoming traffic and should not be relied upon to light your path. It is not bright enough for that purpose. Includes several mounts for attachment onto various parts of your bicycle.

Bright, easy to fasten anywhere on the forks you'd like. Choice of steady beam or flashing. I had been having a problem with the bigger units fastened on my seat rod being stolen as they could be unclicked off from their mounts rather easily. These little workhorses are not easy to get off and solved the missing lights hassle. One button operation is easy to use and well placed. Put them on and forget about'em.

Great light, great price, April 27, 2012
By Richard W Smith (NORTH RICHLAND HILL, TX, US)

|
Great product. Both lights very visable at night from the back and sides. The light has a "focused" beam in the center of the lens which projects like a flashlight which you can see for quite a distance. I adjusted the light where the beam hits the ground around 50 to 60 feet behind me. That way it wont interfere with the drivers vision yet is still bright enough to let anyone behind me know I'm there. Bought a set for my wife as well. For the price you cant go wrong.

If you want to be safe on the road while cycling these lights are a must. You can choose between the blinking setting or constant light. The lights are are bright and attract attention from others on the road. Not sure on the battery life yet. I commute to work on my road bike and travel on very busy roads. Being "seen" by other commuters in their cars is a must!

My wife and I got these to help prevent accidents while riding on the street and to be more visible on the bike paths at night. I expected the lights to do just that but not much in terms of extending my own vision at night. I am happily surprised at how well these light up our trail at night. I get a good 15-20 of lit visibility in front of me when riding our trail. Product is worth getting, especially for the price!

Absolutely solid, no problems so far, April 4, 2012
By Simon

I use these for safety, since I commute 5 days a week by bike in a town that is definitely not used to seeing bikes on the road. These simple to install, simple to operate, and durable lights give a little bit of added visibility that goes a long way in terms of safety. I've ridden in rain and I treat my bike pretty roughly, but they function fine and give me peace of mind when I ride home in the dark. Definitely realize that these will NOT illuminate the road your riding on, they serve only as a way to be seen by drivers. I recommend combining these with some spoke LED's to get full 360 visibility.

Good light set, February 22, 2012
By Great Santini (FL)

As always, Amazon comes through with biking supplies. The light set is just what you need to be seen at night, way better than the reflectors, but don't count on them as a headlight. It "says" it's not a replacement for actual reflectors on your bike, but it reflects just fine, looks good on the bike too.

Planet Bike Blinky ( used on a dog collar), January 11, 2012
By Buck
|
|
This set of blinky lights is intended for bicycles but I bought it for my dog's collar because all the lights I found for pets were cheaply made and broke easily. This set of lights comes with three size of handlebar clamps. I used the smallest and attached it to the ring on my dog's collar and left it there. When we go out at night I just snap the light on and go. It snaps on securely. This lets the light hang so it is directed forward more than down. It is extremely visible from the front and I have no problem seeing it from about 45 degrees to the rear and side, especially as it swings when he runs.
My dog is a German Shepherd so he he is large enough that he doesn't notice the plastic clamp on his collar. The light itself doesn't bother him either. The plastic clip on the light has a retaining nub on it so it can actually be slid onto a collar and hooked behind it. I tried it like this and it stayed on well but it is less visible on a furry dog and it also directs the light downward more. The clip on the light fit one inch or narrower collars if I remember right. This might be a good way for smaller dogs and even toy breeds to wear the light, just remember to slide the light downward when you clip it onto the collar this way.
I have been using this light for a few weeks and haven't had any problems with it even though it bounces around a lot when my dog runs. (He runs next to my bike). He has worn it in snow and rain without any issues. The light is larger than most pet lights but that hasn't been a problem and I don't think it would be on a smaller dog either. I use the red light because it is visible from a long ways off. I'm not sure how long the battery will last but I have been using this light about 45 minutes a day for a few weeks and it is still just as bright as when I got it. I will be buying batteries in bulk because they are the button type batteries which are usually expensive.
My dog runs next to me when I ride my bicycle and I am gratified to see how many cars slow down as they approach head on. (I do have a headlight on my bike but cars didn't slow down for me until I put this light on my dog's collar). I highly recommend this light to protect your pet at night.

These were very easy to attach to my bike. They are very bright as well and make me feel much safer when rider after dusk or in the rain. They have a solid setting and a flashing/strobe setting.
